Now I mentioned a short time ago that Nightcliff Dragons

rugby league club unfortunately targeted overnight there along with Sanderson
Middle School, their container was broken into. Joining me on
the line right now to tell us a little bit
more about what happened. It is the wonderful Jackie Edwards.
Good morning, Jackie.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Morning Katie. How are you.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
I'm not too bad, probably better than you guys this morning, Jackie,
tell us what happened overnight?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Well, we just got broken into. I guess that's all
you can say. It is. I got a call from
the school this morning at about six thirty. The groundsman
had found all a lot of our parel strewn all
over the oval. There was empty curtains of soft drink
and rubbish everywhere. And when we opened the container, somehow

rather they got in one of the shutters and there
was just strewn everywhere, all the shirts, all the apparel,
the small cash box that we had in there was gone,
Tomato sauce squirted everywhere, all over the apparel, all over
the container, on the ceiling, in the fridge. They just

had a wonderful time in there, didn't they.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Well, it's you know, it's just absolutely senseless. Idiotic behavior
as well, Jackie. And then the ramifications for you guys
in having to clean.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
It all up.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
It's like it's just a waste of bloody time and effort.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Well, every volunteer in Darwin is flat out, not just
our club, every club. You know, you see all the
volunteers every week they've taken the jumpers home, washing them,
bringing the black or clean. You know, we offer a
service to the community to engage the kids in the sport.
They're well looked after, their clothes and everything. You're all supplied.
(01:56):
It costs a lot of money to buy all that
apparel and the kids do you pay for some of
it within their registration, but even so, it's the cost
of getting it again because it'll be ruined, absolutely ruined.
You can't get tomato sauce out of a white tablecloth,
No are you're going to get it out of a
white football jumper?

Well certainly not my waiting. Yeah, it's Jackie. You don't
want to send the jerseys to me, Jackie, because I
won't be able to get it out. But it is
devastating and you know, you know I made a joke then,
but it's bloody devastating and it's heartbreaking. And I know
that you and so many other volunteers, you know, like
you put your heart and soul into the club and

then when something like this happens, it's actually really heartbreaking.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
It is heartbreaking, you know. Like we pride ourselves in
having nice apparel for our supporters, our children, everyone you know,
and all our sponsors are on our apparel. So we're
going to have to just dump all that apparel and
start again. So that's an added cost that you can't afford.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Yeah, how much do you reckon?
Speaker 2 (03:03):
That will cost Jackie thousands?
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Oh bloody hell, what a you know, just what a
waste it is, you know.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
And we're no better off than any other club in Darwin.
We rely on our sponsorship, we rely on our registrations.
We offer a service to all our kids that come there.
We've got some wonderful parents involved in our club. We've
had untold offers to help clean up the container, but

we can't do anything until the police come.

So the police they've been contacted Jackie, well we.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Contacted them, and so the school. So they've also done
a number on the school smash windows. I don't know
how many I have had two phone calls from the
school checking up on us, and they said that they
they've had a lot of damage in there as well.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
You know, the frustrate part about the I mean, there's
so much that's frustrating. And I don't know whether it's
kids or adults that are involved, but you know, there
are so many people at the Nightcliff Dragon's Football Club
that do a lot to help others and to engage kids,
to make sure that, you know, kids and seniors are engaged.
And it's a real kick in the guts. Then to

have something like this happen and to be targeted in this.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Way, it is, it's devastating and we all feel sick. Literally. Yeah,
you know, your heart rate goes up, your anxiety level
goes up because you think how we're going to how
we're going to replace all this stock. We will, yeah,
but it'll be a lot of work. You know. We're grateful.
(04:44):
We're grateful for the wonderful sponsors that we've got. We're
grateful for the wonderful parents. We've had offers from the NRLNT,
we've had offers from a man from Brothers Rugby League
to come and give us a hand, offers from our
own community. But doesn't replace the stock, and it doesn't

replace the damage. You know, we're just grateful that they
never smashed any glass in there, because we've got a
ba Maery, we've got a big oven, we've got a
big double door fridge. But we weren't able to actually
assess anything, Katie, because we didn't want to go in
and disturb anything.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
No, So what do you need now, Jackie? You know,
how can we help you to get the word out there?
What do you need? I know you've already had an
untold number of volunteers saying that they're happy to help.
But you know, if there's somebody out there, if there's
a business out there listening this morning that's prepared to
help you replace the jerseys, if there's somebody out there
that can help in some way, what do you need?
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Well, we just need an offer and we will accept
it whatever they offer, will accept. It's just devastating, Katie,
you know, and I know that businesses are struggling themselves
at the moment, you know, but anyone who wants to
offer to replace any of their peril, it'll be greatly
appreciated and their business will be recognized. Ye.

Well, look if there is anybody out there listening this
morning that is able to help in any way, you know,
if you're able to give the club a bit of
a hand with these jerseys that have been damaged, with
the damage that's that has been well, that's that's happened,

You know, for a while there, I guess we're feeling
like maybe the crime and some of the senseless garbage
going on in the community was getting a bit better
after this. How are you guys feeling.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Well, pretty gutted at the moment, Katie, you know, because
it's not something any volunteer club deserves, no matter if
it or any other club. You know, every club works hard.
Every club there's not paid there's no paid positions in clubs.
Within the rugby league community. Everyone is a volunteer. We're

all volunteers. We give countless hours, some of us, some
people give forty hours a week on top of their
job to run the club, you know. So it's just
devastating and you get to the point where you wonder
why these these people do this.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Yeah, Oh, you certainly do you just think what's the
point in it. It's so I'm.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Wondering whether or not I'm wondering whether or not any
of their relatives they are actually playing for our club.
And if those kids wanted to come and join the club,
then we get them to clean up the conchaina. If
it is.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Kids, yep, I think that's a good idea.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
I don't think it's going to happen, probably not, but yeah, look,
anyone who wants to offer support that it would be
greatly appreciated.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Yeah, well, let's will waiting here. What if anyone gets
in contact with us, Jaggie. But I feel for you guys.
I know there's so many wonderful volunteers that club, as
you touched on, like there are at so many beautiful
sporting clubs across the Northern Territory. But the thing that
shits me about this is if it is kids, right,
you your club? So many of the clubs around the
territory do so much to engage kids as well, like
(08:15):
in a really positive way, and you know that's what
we want to see. We want we want our kids
out there playing sport exactly.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
And it's a community based club, as we all are.
You know, we're not a big national NRL body or
anything like they were, just a community living in the
community with our We're fortunate enough to have Sanderson Middle
School as our home base and we work closely with them.
We work closely with the kids within the school and
the kids are surrounding and it's just difficult to have

to face this at the end of the season.

Yeah, it's spot on, Jackie. Yeah, look, I really appreciate

organized for all our kids in the next few weeks,
