Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now if you've just joined us. Krista and I were
just going through the news and talking about the fact
that the police arrested five males in relation to multiple
property offenses across the Greater Darwin region a little earlier
this week now, we had a number of people get
in contact with us about stolen vehicles. We thought we
need to catch up with Strikeforce Trident Detective Senior Sergeant

(00:20):
Dale Mortebarna to find out what has gone on. He
joins me in the studio right now. Good morning, Dale, Good.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Morning Katie, Good morning to all your listeners.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Good to have you on now. Tell us it looks
like this all kicked off a bit earlier in the
week when there was a report of a group of
males allegedly attempting to start a white Toyota land Cruiser
in the staff car park at the Darwin Airport.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Yeah, so that was about eight point thirty pm there
on Wednesday night, and then from there it just didn't stop,
so they went on to steal another three vehicles, the
last of them being stolen at about five am in
Kola Linga and as of ten o'clock this morning, we've
now managed to arrest fifteen offenders in Bolton.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
That's free fifteen.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Yeah, so fifteen offenders, the young youngest been eleven and
the oldest being twenty nine. The rest of them sort
of age between that thirteen and twenty year old group.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
So fifteen people aged between eleven and twenty nine. Do
we know what area they were from?

Speaker 2 (01:21):
With adal from the West Daily region, all from the.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
West Daily region and so what came into town and
decided they wanted to allegedly steal some cars?

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah, unfortunately it's becoming a pretty common occurrence. But they've
all made their way into town via other means and
then when they're here, they've just decided to go on
a rampage trying to steal as many older model cars
as they possibly can. So, I mean we had four
cars stolen and then another two unsuccessful attempts at stealing
cars as well.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Are there still specific models that people are going for
when it comes to these Carsdale?

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yeah, Look, it's mainly the older model Toyotas. They would
prefer a full drive Toyota like a land Cruise, a Troopie,
an eighty series or one hundred series or the high
lux utes. But if they come across anything else the
two will drive trade type utes. They will take them
as well. They're not fussy.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Look, there's a lot that's concerning about this. I mean
the fact that there's children as young as eleven years
old involved in this incident and adults then with them.
That's a real worry from my perspective. Was it girls
and boys or all boys all males?

Speaker 2 (02:25):
All males are all males. I mean, probably what's most
concerning about this is that with the last vehicle they stole,
it was a single cab, full drive ute, and they
had ten people in that. You had seven in the
cab and three in the tray.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
In a single vehicle.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Use in a single cab, single cab. Ut sorry, that's
the one that went on to ram or successfully ram
one police vehicle and then and damage another four with
the occupants in the tray throwing projectiles at police vehicles.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
So they were targeting the police vehicles. I thought I'd
read the dog operations unit at one point, was that y?

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Yeah, So essentially after they stole that view, we're already
in the area. We received the call that they were
out there trying to steal cars and call a linger.
We made our way out there, and sided that vehicle
heading south on the highway, it ended up turning off
the Arnham Highway and then took a couple of backstreets.
So police basically set up in the area, trying not
to engage it, knowing that the occupants are in the tray,

(03:19):
but instead that vehicle then started to engage us, driving
out spotting the police vehicles and then deliberately targeting them.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
What happened then in the end, how were you eventually
able to apprehend all fifteen of these people?

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Well, we got five. So we got four from one
stolen car which was pursued and spiked and that ended
on Vanland Drive in Karama there and some bushland around
Homes Jungle. We got four from that. Another vehicle we
recovered in fifteen miles in Palmerston there arrested one youth
from that. The others fled. They joined up with some

(03:54):
others and somehow made their way to cool A Linga
where they stole that other ute. That ute made its
way south, ended up dumping in some bushland off Crater
Lake Road around Bachelor and they fled off into the bushland.
From there tracked a fairway along the railway lines and
we arrested five yesterday afternoon in between Adelaide River and

(04:15):
Bachelor off the railway line. The other five continued with
their persistence to not be caught. Adelaide River arrested three
of them overnight. They were called out all night long
for these guys trying to steal cars in Adelaide River.
They managed to arrest three, so two last night, one
first thing this morning, and then at ten o'clock a
team of tried and Adlaide River police and dog operations

(04:38):
you know, arrested the last two male offenders and Adelaide River.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
There were any victims injured or was it? You know,
like talk us through what had happened with those victims.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Look, all of the cars that were stolen were stolen
from basically car parks, so they were just parked up
and hot wide and then stolen.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
But this morning we're investigating a link between an salt
that occurred in Adelaide River where two males of similar
descriptions to the two were just arresticed assaulted a female
who was sitting here in a car at the parking
bays and Adelaide River and attempted to steal her car.
So we believe the incidents are linked to the two
that we've just arrested, but we're still investigating. That's in

(05:18):
the early stages.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
So in the end, four cars stolen, four car stolen,
four cars stolen, fifteen people arrested, aged between eleven and
twenty nine. Yep, and a hot like a from your words,
like gone on a rampage.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yeah, And like I said, it's it's far too common
with these guys, say, seem to be in the habit
of trying to steal as many cars as they can
till they've almost got a car each. And I think
if we hadn't a come out when we did at midnight,
that there would have been more cars to add to
that tally.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
How frustrating is it for the Northern Territory Police for
Trident and the others that you know that support you
in these situations. How frustrating is it then when you've
got people that seemingly like it seems as though they're
coming to town with the very objective to steal vehicles.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Yeah they are. I mean they might come here for
some other reasons to do some shopping, see some family,
but ultimately it always ends in this same sort of outcome.
They're here for a couple of days, and then while
they're here, at some point in time, they decide they
want to leave and they leave in a soln car.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
Were any of these offenders alleged defenders known to the police, Look.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
The majority of them were known. The younger offenders, some
of them this is sort of first time offending. So
out of that group, there were four there that were
eligible for youth diversion, so they have since been their
files have been pushed across for assessment from our youth
diversion unit. The majority of the adults will known, not
all of them for this type of offending. But out

(06:52):
of that group, I mean, there were three that were
on bail and there were another two that were subject
to court orders for similar offending.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
Well, that's going to be incredibly frustrating to people listening
this morning, particularly you know, if you were a victim
of your vehicle being stolen. It's anyway, Look, it doesn't
sound like it's the only thing that you guys have
that you've been busy with either over the last twenty
four hours. My understanding is that you've made twenty earrets

(07:19):
in the last twenty four hours. Obviously fifteen of those
people in relation to that crime spree? What were the
other five in relation to.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Well look off significance. Half of the Trident team yesterday
also executed a search warrant in the rural area while
the other half were dealing with the overnight crime spree.
From that search warrant, they ended up recovering three stolen cars,
a stolen trailer, a firearm, and some ammunition and made
another to arrest there. So forty eight year old male

(07:49):
who was charged with all of the offending relating to
the property that was at the location, and a thirty
eight year old male who was arrested for breaching his bail. Okay,
whereabouts was that as a block and Daln River all right?

Speaker 1 (08:01):
And they had that's the stolen property.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
All that property was out there, so yeah, and.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
So two arrests on that one. And then there was
a couple more by the sounds, a.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Couple more on outstanding warrants, and then an adult female
who also had outstanding warrants but was using stolen credit
cards around the joint. So we've taken her into custody
as well.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
Do you guys ever sleep?

Speaker 2 (08:26):
It doesn't feel like it Katie, we have some massive
days in Trident, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
It seems like you are so incredibly busy, and I
know the community is really grateful for it. Like I
know that people, particularly if you are the victim of
one of those crimes, and you know, like I know
that to some they may feel that a break and
entry or a car theft is not as as serious
on the scale of as some of the other offending.
But I mean you are then talking about a vehicle

(08:52):
being stolen, someone's pride and enjoyed their livelihood, their transportation
to get them around, then being driven at the police
in one instance as well. I mean, it's it is
the kind of behavior that people have had a gutfull off.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Yeah. Absolutely, I mean I think what's satisfying for us
is that we can see the outcome of the hard
work that goes into what we do. I mean, locking
all these people up it puts it does It puts
a massive dent in what goes on. I mean, as
of eight o'clock this morning, between six ams and a
and eight o'clock this morning, there were no break ins
recorded in the Darwin area overnight at all. And I

(09:28):
would say that that's a direct correlation to all the
people that we've been arresting.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
Well, that's incredibly frustrating as well, in the sense that
you know, a group can decide that they're you know,
they're going to engage in this kind of behavior and
rek havoc on others. But then when you are able
to apprehend those people, I mean, the good thing about
that is it's, as you've said, it makes a huge
dent on the crime in which we're seeing.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Yeah, look, it's not a secret. It's the same people
doing the same stuff time and time again, and that's
certainly what we see when we're dealing with this. I mean,
there's always new people that come into them, but we
have the same core group of ringleaders that seem to
encourage everyone else into this offending. And when we take
them out of the equation, it slows things down massively.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
I bet it does well. Strike Force Strident Detective Senior
Sergeant Dale Malte Barnard. We always appreciate your time, particularly
when it has been such a busy forty eight hours.
Thank you very much for joining us in the studio
this morning.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Not a problem, Katie.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
