Melbourne's Metro Tunnel stations are introducing new crowd control technology featuring digital graphics above train doors that display carriage congestion levels using four silhouettes shaded in black. The system will be operational at all five Metro stations from Sunday and includes accessibility features showing where people with disabilities should board. Meanwhile, the Liberal opposition has announced plans to criminalise coercive control with penalties of up to seven years imprisonment, with Opposition Leader Jess Wilson planning to introduce the legislation next week or within her first 100 days if elected.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Melbourne's train carriage roulette could soon be over thanks to
new technology being rolled out along the Metro Tunnel. As
Rachelle Brown reports, the assistant takes the guesswork out of
where to stand on the platform for the best chance
of finding a seat.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
New technology at the Metro Tunnel stations will soon change
the way commuters travel the ground. Control graphics will light
up above the train doors, showing passengers exactly how congested
each carriage is. The feature will be in use at
all five Metro stations from Sunday four. Silhouettes will be
shaded in black, taking the guesswork out of where to

(00:43):
stand and jump on. The high tech screens will also
show where people with a disability should board, just one
of a suite of measures to improve safety.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
All of these additional technology points all go to making
sure that the user experience is less stressful.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Meanwhile, the Coalition has joined a march against family violence
while unveiling its first policy. Under the Liberals Plan, coercive
control would be outlawed, with punishments of up to seven
years jail. The Opposition leader plans to push the laws
through Parliament next week. If that fails, she's vowing to
introduce them in her first one hundred days in office

(01:22):
if elected.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
This is a insidious, insidious pattern of behavior that we
need to put a name to and we need to
call out.

Speaker 5 (01:30):
We want to criminalize this because this behavior is not okay.
Far and above, it is women who suffer.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Jess Wilson will now turn her attention to her new
look shadow cabinet, expected to be unveiled in the coming days.
