Speaker 1 (00:00):
A lot of developments in the US in the last
twenty four or so hours, with Joe Biden standing down
well announcing that he won't be rerunning for president. David
Woyward from Channel seven, the US correspondent, is joining us.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Good morning, David, Good morning.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Go So David in a nutshell, how does the process
work now?
Speaker 3 (00:22):
I mean there's not long to go.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
No, there's not long to go. That party convention, the
Democratic Party convention is next month. But it's pretty certainly
now Kamala Harris's nomination to lose. She is locked up
pretty much all of that support right now. She has
every major senior Democrat now in her corner. They have
endorsed her. Of course, the president Joe Biden, we saw
(00:45):
that yesterday. He has now endorsed her, and she is
now locking in those delegates as well, more than four
thousand of them from the party. So it's pretty much
now Kamala Harris's She'll have to now go through that
process of filling out her ticket, picking her vice presidential pick.
But yeah, it's looking pretty certain now that it will
be a Donald Trump and Kamala Harris matchup. And of
course the Democrats are trying to faint that frame. This
(01:06):
is a match up between convictor crook and a star prosecutor.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
How bizarre. Wow, I reckon Trump would be somewhat upset
because he had a free run, didn't he, especially, you
know the way Joe was going. Did he be a
little bit upset behind the scenes he watched the show
it to these people.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, exactly. Well, certainly the Republicans right now they are
scrambling to sort of pivot and you know, refocus their attacks.
And we've said a little bit of that already today.
But yeah, just from that debate performance three weeks ago,
now we saw how pretty much Donald Trump got that
free run against Joe Biden. He was really unable to
land any of those punchers. But certainly you wouldn't think
(01:43):
that will be the case now with Kamala Harris, she's
a bit more of a brawler, She's a bit more
of a fighter. She's certainly a formidable debater.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Well, I mean, the Democratic endorsement Democratic Party's endorsement is
one thing. What is the feeling for her among American people?
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Well, that remains for me. Scene just yet, of course,
those pulses are furiously behind the scenes now trying to
crunch all of those numbers, but she's actually just hit
a pretty incredible milestone in the past few hours. She
has raised more than one hundred and twenty million dollars
for her party in just twenty four hours. So that
makes it the highest earning candidate in a twenty four
(02:19):
hour period in American history, right, so she's right up there.
That's the equivalent. So it's actually around eighty million US dollars,
but it's still absolutely astronomical. So if that is anything
to go by, she certainly re energized this campaign, and
I mean, it has to be done it and it
was really flagging under Joe Biden.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, Biden going means that Trump can't use the word
old at all now because he's now the elder candidate
in the running.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
But as far as he's the old blocking yeah yeah, right.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
I changed the language completely. But the process, if it
wasn't Harris, then it would have been very complicated. So
close to the event, are you surprised with the immediate
support of the people at Nancy placing mcclinton's jumping on
board on Not at all.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
I think they didn't have much of a choice in
the end. And that's not to say that they wouldn't
have supported Kamala Harris, but certainly it was the easiest
and it was the cleaner. She was already on that ticket.
All of that money that had already been committed to
the campaign had her name on it. So all they
had to do was really flip her to the primary
candidate on that ticket, file that relevant paperworker with the
Electoral Commission, and it was kind of a nice and
(03:24):
easy path. Anything else would have been very bruising. It
could have been very, very messy if we had to
go on to that open convention of course, sent very
close to the election deadline as well. So this has
been the most painless. This is probably the best way
that the Democrats could have played it.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Joe was defiant right until the end. Though what or
who do you think finally did push him to drop out?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Well, certainly something has got to him. I mean, those
calls have been growing and they had reached that crescendo
for weeks and weeks after that debate, we've had all
of those major party figures. You're right and point out
that he had struck that tone of defiance. We know
that his in a circle had got smaller and smaller,
and he was relying just sort of on the advice
of a few family members and very close advisors towards
(04:07):
the end there. But something has led into that we
know the donations have been drying up as well, and
once the money starts throwing up, you kind of you're
up against it. So now campaign, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yeah, David, what a time for history with the Trump
assassination of tempt and then the record history making donations
in such a short period of time. But there's so
much more too, isn't there. I've never seen this before,
someone pulling out so close to the US election.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah right, I mean this election campaign just keeps on
throwing up those curveballs. I mean, it was only a
week ago that we had an assassination attempt on a
former US president in life. I don't know if we
really let that sink in. It is a huge moment.
And then you've got all this other carnage and chaos
surrounding the Democrat impact Up on Capitol Hill today they're
actually grilling the Secret Service and the head of the
(04:53):
Secret Service there regarding those failings surrounding the protection of
Donald Trump. So really interesting, in a very ensline of
questioning for those congressional leaders today and they have found
major failings in that process.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Well, David, do you think they can win with such
big changes this close to the election?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Oh, don't make me do predictions. I mean I couldn't
have predicted half the stuff happened in this election campaign.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Those donations speak a lot, I guess, so you can
really take from it.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
They really do. Yeah, they really do. They will speak
a lot, and it will be interesting to see if
they are maintained as well. Was this just a flash
in the pan? Was this just an early bit of
support for her? But whether or not it's that local level,
grass roots support maintains for her. Look, she's already whipping
up support amongst the younger generations. She's getting the support
(05:43):
of Charlie XCX and a few others like that. So
she's really tapping into a well culture as well in
way that Donald Trump.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Absolutely, and there is there's a lot to be said
for that. It is still an election where not everybody votes,
so they need they need to get them all down
there well for a comprehensive coverage, But please no predictions.
David will have all the latest on seven Heaven News
tonight at six. Thank you, David Boys.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
No problems, guys, stay tuned. I'm sure there's a few
more curveballs to count.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Doubt nothing surprises me anymore
