Speaker 2 (00:32):
On the cutting room floor today.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
This is a story about persistence pays off a woman
in South Korea who took a while to get a
driver's license. I'll tell you about her in a minute,
but let's ask the question of you, Brendan, did you
get your car license?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
First? Go? First Go? And I had to go and
see a guy called Hitler. He was called they called
him Hitler.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Did you have to go to Germany?

Speaker 2 (00:55):
No? No, he was at the local registry. He's playing golf.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Who's in a bunker.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
But he really looked like Hitler and he leant into it.
He had the mole and everything. I think he was
like full on into it.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
And when you went to see him, meaning you didn't
have to drive.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
My dad took me up there, and my dad used
to have this old jag before you go were Richie.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
It was a real heap of shit jag.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
And it was full of rust and two of the
three engine mounts were cracked. Well, I learned to drive
in his Toyota Hia's van, which was a column shift manual.
So that taught me a lot of things about reverse
parking and all that. But we thought, well, let's not
take that for the test. That's a bit ambitious. Let's
take the old man's jag with two of the three

(01:38):
engine mounts cracked. So he went around a corner the
whole engine shifted in the front. But anyway, Hitler passed
me and he was happy.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
So did Hitler sit in the car next to you?

Speaker 2 (01:49):
I sat in the back. He thought, I was Gebels.
Well take my tank.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Because there were some people who if they grew up
in country towns or whatever. I've got a friend who
who drove his friend. He didn't have his own license,
but he drove his friend to the police station and
the guy the policeman just said okay, and he went
around the lock and said you've got it. And then
the guy who drove him in said, well, I better
get mine. He said, do you drive like him? He
said yeah, and he said okay, he's yours.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Well, my mate the scamp when he got his pea plates,
a copper mate of the family said give me a
pea plate license.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
You know this is back in the days when they're
on paper.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
And he said right, and he wrote and this guy
was a sergeant, wrote his name and a phone numb
and he said, if you get pulled up, hand this over. No.
And he had to get out of town hst holding
the eight big thing with massive big re attires and
a massive big V eight engine and.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
The coppers had pull him up because he was on
his red peas.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
And he'd had a piece of paper that said don't touch.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Me, and they just got yeah, nowhere's mate, carry on.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Wow. What about this woman in South Korea? I'm going
to tell you she spent fourteen thousand dollars on driving
lessons over fifteen years because it took her that long
to get her license. She had nine hundred and sixty
attempts at a driving license, she said, a Guinness World record.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Who she must be thrilled, that would be if she
did it once. I'll give you the stats.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
I know you can't do the.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Mass mortal nine hundred six.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
She's highlander.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
No she did it. I'll give you the stats.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
She didn't start learning to drive until she was in
her sixties, because she says she was too busy raising
her children.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
She's only got four and.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
She started at her sixties. I have to pick them
up from their jobs every day. Anyway, she said there
was a theory test first of all that she didn't
pass and kept doing that. Obviously the practical so let's
break down the mats here.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
So she's not nine hundred and sixty eight years old.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
She did the equivalent of an exam every day, five
days a week over three years. Wow, that's the equivalency
of what she did. So she spent fifteen years doing it.
But if you've boiled it down, that's what it took.
And she's become a national hero. She's been given a car,

(04:00):
and she's been called a woman of determination, and she.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Over a car. You know what a terrible thing. She's
a terrible driver. And she gets a.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
Cat worries me. Is everyone goes, yeah, you're finally here.
There are some there is a reason who should never
be on the road.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
You're a late bloomer. I was. I was a car driving.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
I was in my late twenty was it probably twenty
seven when I got my driver's license. I was traveling
the world with tell beyond two thousand driving. I drove
a car in New York, but didn't have a driver's license.
I did have a piece of paper that said, if
I get pulled over to talk to Scamp's friends, the superintendent.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
And you're a late bloomer, and other things as well.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Very amusing.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
I've got a piece of paper for that too. You
got on, you got off your red piece, didn't.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
You, And end and scene the cardinal.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Okay, kids, that's it for today.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Come back tomorrow from more of Chelsea than a man
