Speaker 1 (00:00):
Gold, it's Jonesy Demander driving you home.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Well, he's the man who can make belly button lint,
black holes and breakfast cereals sound equally fascinating. He's a doctor,
as scientist, a broadcaster, an author and one of Australia's
most loved explainers of all things.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
I'm talking, of.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Course, about doctor Carl, who joins us.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Now, Doctor Amanda, you're too kind? Would bless you well?

Speaker 1 (00:24):
You look well and you're a snappy dresser.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Is your wife Mary still making your shirts?

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Four thread overlocker differential feed takes three hours from cutting
the material out to wearable form on the body. Right.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
Nice.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
I love it when you say interlocker.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Doctor Carl. Today is tin hat Tuesday on our radio show.

Speaker 5 (00:40):
I don't know if you'd be familiar with this, but
what it is is people Amanda gets us to wear
alumini and foil hats to stop the bad.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
What is it?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Well, I don't know what I think people. I'm not
a believer in this, but I think people wear the
tin hats to stop the government or alien thoughts getting in.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
I think might be what it is.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
But we do you end up smelling a bit like garlic.

Speaker 5 (01:01):
Bread and then people ring in with their conspiracy theories.
The first question I would ask you is do you
have any conspiracy.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Theories ones that you think, oh, that would be fair enough.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yes, the government has lied to us in the past,
and so the statement that eat carrots because they're good
for your eyes is a false statement who was started
by the British government during the Second World War to
cover up the fact that the British military had radar
that was small enough to be carried on airplane, not

(01:35):
just on the ground, but on an aeroplane, and so
to cover it up they would say, oh, there isn't
our pilots can find at night the incoming Nazi bombers
is because they eat carrots to improve their eyesight. And
it was just a lie to cover up the fact
they had small airborne radar.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Wow, what do you make of some of the bigger conspiracies?
And every week someone will phone us with a conspiracy
theory that the moonland didn't happen, and it breaks my
heart every time. How do you feel when science and
the hard work in the bravery is negated by a
couple of millennials.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
It goes back a fair way and people trying to
make a short term advantage. And I think it's part
of a bigger problem, which is the lack of trust
in our society and the government. And so that then
leads on to a lack of trust in science because
that's an easy target. And so in the United States,

(02:33):
having been free of measles for twenty years, they're now finding,
thanks to their anti vaccination programs, that they're getting minor
clusters of measles which have led to small outbreaks, which
have led to big outbreaks. And the current thinking is
that if they do nothing and in other words, don't
do any more vaccinations, this will turn into a full

(02:55):
blown epidemic of measles across the USA, and many more
people will die, and it's totally be preventable. So I
think it's due to a lack of trust in institutions.
And then he's saying who's driving it, Well, people who
will benefit from it, And in many cases just simply
I want to get some money from you from buying
my newsletter, or I want to get some clicks, or

(03:16):
I want to get more likes. They's as simple as that.

Speaker 5 (03:18):
In many cases, I'm a product of the generation of
measles I had measles, but then I got vaccinated for
it as well, back in the seventies, and it was
pretty rife.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
I'd hate to see that come back again.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
But give me one of your favorite conspiracy theories that
one of your listeners has come up with, and I'll
see if I can address a gentle.

Speaker 5 (03:36):
Okay, So this is Rob Rober is a regular to
tin Hat Tuesday. So he says that the Alcatraz escapees
were actually the NASA astronauts that went to the moon.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
Michael Collins I was known as Frank Morris, Armstrong was
known as Clarence England and buzz Aldrin was John England.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
And why did they change their names, Rob.

Speaker 4 (04:01):
Because they are the Alcatraz escapes.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
They escaped from Alcatraz to become astronauts.

Speaker 4 (04:09):
They were given a pardon if they would join in
and comply.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
But what about all the training for years they would
have had.

Speaker 4 (04:16):
To do to do? What to go?

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Where?

Speaker 4 (04:20):
Ah?

Speaker 1 (04:22):
The drop penny drops?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
He thinks they went nowhere.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
And so the only people you can get who'll accept
this money people from Alcatraz, like an out of work
actor wouldn't do it.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
You make a good point, someone from home and away.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
You could have had Rayma flame and Moon.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
That one. I'd need to see some of the evidence
for it, and evidence for me is not a YouTube video.
So in my various careers, I've done a little bit
of research and it takes about a year and a
half to learn how to do re search right, not
just simply watching a YouTube video three o'clock in the morning.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Well there it is that rules me out.

Speaker 5 (05:06):
You'll always give us the spades of sense on our show,
and we always enjoy having you

Speaker 3 (05:11):
On Doctor cal Thank you, thank you please, Like mung beans,
