Speaker 1 (00:01):
Let's get more on that breaking news in Paris. We
have a confession in the infamous Louver heist that has
sent shock waves around the world this month. The two
suspects are now set to face major charges. Let's bring
in Nick peas at, senior reporter with the Daily Mail UK.
Good morning. So it's only a partial admission. What does
that mean?
Speaker 2 (00:22):
That's right, Well, this case is fast moving, as you
can see here. Basically this afternoon the Paris Prosecutor Laura
Bucco announced that two people that they'd had in custody
since Saturday had made partial confessions. As you said there
in your introduction, they haven't admitted full responsibility. But the
DNA that they found one hundred and fifty samples of
(00:44):
DNA that they found at the crime tceness positively linked
these two men. And I'll give you a few details
about them. One of them is a thirty four year
old man and he was arrested at Charles de Gaull
Airport as he tried to leave the country on Saturday,
was trying to go to Algeria. The other man is
a thirty nine year old man who was arrested in Oberville,
which is an area of Northern Paris, and should say
(01:07):
that there are still two people outstanding, but the police
are confident that the two men they have were part
of that group before because of the DNA the prosecutor
said that they found at the scene, and she said
that the DNA was found on the scooter. You may
remember scooters we used as getaway vehicles and also on
angle grinders and bits of broken glass that were found
(01:27):
on that first floor window where they managed to get
into the Apollonia Gallery and make off with those duels
in that robbery. We're very, very audacious. It was like
something out of a Hollywood film, wasn't it.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Yeah, And in another embarrassing sign for the French, we're
hearing it was a scooter rider or a cyclist that
raised the alarm, not anyone from the museum.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
No, that's right. As we may recall from when we
chatted earlier on in the week, the security cameras at
the louver were positioned away from that window, so they
didn't see anything of what was happening. The video that
you're looking at now is apparently shot by a bystander
who managed to raise the alarm, and the authorities were
there at the scene very quickly. They did have one
stroke of luck in that the prosecutor said today that
(02:10):
they an attempt to be made to set fire to
the items that were left, so the angle grinder and
a high viz jacket and Milwaukee talkie, obviously in an
attempt to destroy any DNA evidence. But because the police
were alerted by that passer iron were there very quickly.
They managed to extinguish the flames, but the gang still
managed to get away, and we'd have a few more
details about what happened there that it's actually quite a
(02:32):
sophisticated investigation if you think about it. They track them
on CCT gameras to a part of the Eastern suburb
of Eastern Paris where they then switched to another vehicle
from those scooters and they then disappeared. But say they
were able to track them down through those DNA samples,
and because two of those suspects are actually known to
the police, and one of them is actually duing court
(02:54):
next month on another theft charge.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Okay, so I wonder if they're going to be dubbing
on their mates and where are the jewels will stay Chune,
say Nick
