I'd had a birthday sort of party, and it was
in at Uni, and it was in this lecture theater

never had a cake because we were Jehovah's Witnesses. I'd
never celebrated my birthday. I'd never I didn't. I don't
even know how they knew what was my birthday. And
I remember they brought a cake, which I think was
probably like a Cole's cake or you know, just a
little cake but gorgeous, and then everyone in the theater
saying happy birthday to me. Now I say confident, but

didn't make me feel confident.

It made me feel but it made me feel alive.

jab you with syringes and and didn't want the best
for you. And suddenly I had all these beautiful people

and it was the most extraordinary thing. But I was
also mortified with embarrassment. But I've never been as happy
in that way as I was at that moment.

have to get off and walk part of the way.
But I rode it all the way. Then I rode
it straight into the over the over the humps of
the roots of the trees, and straight into the into
the bike crack locked it up, looked at it and thought.

my world. I was so free.

I had this bike there waiting for me, and it

people in my family. As a kid, I remember being
in the lound room, standing in the lounder you're talking,
doing an impression of people in my family, with the

family watching, laughing on the couch. I remember that.

And you felt good about doing it, absolutely, And when
it was finished you felt great, and going into it
you went, I'm good at this and I feel great.

And what were you wearing, by the way, Oh, yeah,
I don't boy pants on? Yeah, little boy pants and
were standing on the coffee table.
Speaker 4 (41:54):
In the corner where the where the mantlepiece was in
the lounder. I remember it.
Speaker 5 (41:58):
I can pitch it right now. Yeah. And do you
remember an impersonation? Was it funny or just an impersonation?
Speaker 4 (42:03):
I did a fair few people in the family. I
went down at a bit of a list, and I
can't talk about who they work. They might be listening.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
Oh really, you know.
Speaker 4 (42:11):
The people in the room are laughing. Yeah, I remember.

If you don't have anything, you've got some deep psychological
problems going.

I think the only thing I can think of was
happened much when I was much older.

Believe that I wasn't that I wasn't that I didn't
feel confident early on, because I think I gave off
the vibe that I was confident. But I remember it
was the first time I had a birthday.
Speaker 3 (42:41):
Cake, so I love there.

And I was eighteen, and it was the first time
I'd had a birthday sort of party, and it was
in at Uni, and it was in this lecture theater
hall that we'd gone into, and it was the people
in my year and a couple of girlfriends of mine
had organized a cake. When I say confident, and I'd

never had a cake because we were Jehovah's Witnesses. I'd
never celebrated my birthday. I'd never I didn't. I don't
even know how they knew what was my birthday. And
I remember they brought a cake, which I think was
probably like a Cole's cake or you know, just a
little cake but gorgeous, and then everyone in the theater
saying happy birthday to me. Now I say confident, but
(43:27):
didn't make me feel confident.
Speaker 3 (43:29):
It made me feel but it made me feel alive.
Speaker 2 (43:34):

I felt really like you.
Speaker 2 (43:37):
Felt with the bike. I'm like, oh my goodness, I
can have this life. Because all I'd ever been told
by the Jehovah's Witnesses is if I left the Witnesses,
I would be cast into a world of terrible, worldly
people who were evil, who were all trying to, you know,
jab you with syringes and and didn't want the best
for you. And suddenly I had all these beautiful people
(43:59):
and it was the most extraordinary thing. But I was
also mortified with embarrassment. But I've never been as happy
in that way as I was at that moment.
