Speaker 3 (01:03):
Enjoy. The Christian O'Connell Show podcast.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
As always, we work in this radio station. People just
make decisions without speaking to any of us.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Rio, we're now in a studio where we're looking like
we're working for JB Hi-Fi, shifting things.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Huge TVs. Two massive TVs have been thrown into the studio,
turned on their site, and are now flanking us.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
Yeah, they've tried to get new screens in our studios
as part of an upgrade.

Speaker 5 (01:31):
But they're huge.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
I mean, they're one of the biggest TVs ever. It's
like a sports bar in here now.

Speaker 5 (01:35):
Well, you should have seen Patsy this morning. It was actually.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Patsy's got... You've got some mega screen behind you.

Speaker 6 (01:40):
Finally!

Speaker 1 (01:41):
It's like a jumbotron. It's like the thing you have
the scoreboard on at the G.

Speaker 5 (01:45):
It's brilliant.

Speaker 7 (01:46):
I love it.

Speaker 8 (01:47):
I love it.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
But this screen over here was blocking Patsy's view into
the studio and our view into Patsy's room. So we've
had to move that.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
That's not for the optics. That's just for us. You know,
like the cricket screens. It's just that. That's all.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
This is excitement. Intern Pete is in the studio. He
managed to wingle his way to Melbourne. Well done.

Speaker 9 (02:07):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Thanks for having me here. He's here because tomorrow morning.
You're going to be down at the MCG. Huge game tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
First ever regular season game for the NFL right here
in Australia, in Melbourne at the MCG.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
It's amazing.

Speaker 10 (02:20):
I've got goosebumps as you say that. Do I feel
like a sports reporter now?

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Not dressed like that, no.

Speaker 9 (02:25):
No, obviously not. Oh, look, I've got the gold shirt.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
You're like somebody who's going to do some maintenance work
to a Black Thunder.

Speaker 9 (02:30):
You're absolutely right. I have a special costume for tomorrow
as well.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
And also, it's so bright out there right now.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
We're really going to get some good stuff. You're going
to need one of those night scopes. Zero dark 30
out there when you get down there tomorrow.

Speaker 10 (02:42):
I have some breaking news right now. Flight QF338 from
Los Angeles right here in Melbourne, Australia.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
Has landed.

Speaker 9 (02:50):
The Rams are in Australia.

Speaker 5 (02:53):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
It's incredible, isn't it, right? So there's 200 people on
that flight. That's obviously all the players and their coaches,
assistant coaches, 200 people.

Speaker 7 (03:01):
Crazy.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
It's the most expensive commercial plane ever. It's an A380.
I was reading up on it yesterday. It can fly
at 5,000 feet, which is 3,000 feet lower. And so
it becomes more humid, so ideal conditions to sleep.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Oh, really?

Speaker 2 (03:16):
All the players, obviously in an NFL team, it's a
lot of players. You've got the defensive team, defensive team,
how to flatbed and wait for some of the coaches.

Speaker 5 (03:27):
But not all of them.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
Not all the coaches. How did they, what are they doing? Paper, scissors, rock?
How are they deciding which coaches get a bed? Are
they rotating? You get an hour, then you get an hour.

Speaker 10 (03:39):
It arrived 41 minutes early as well, so I don't
know if that affects their sleeping patterns or anything they
had planned.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
He's been very excited about the tailwind.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
You're very locked in.

Speaker 10 (03:47):
It's been very fast. I'm like, this guy fanged it. Like,
he's absolutely going, you know what, let's get there.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
As soon as we can. Well, they need to get
here and start warming up.

Speaker 6 (03:53):
Really?

Speaker 1 (03:53):
The other team, the 49ers, have been here all week.
They're applying for citizenship.

Speaker 10 (03:58):
I'm waiting to hear from a couple of airport sources.
I've been told mostly chicken was eaten on the plane
for the main meal. I have been told that this morning.
So there is some stats that are going to come
out throughout the morning.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
In a 15-hour flight, I've got another stat. Get a list.
Because obviously some of those players are big units. You're
talking about 130, 140 kilos?

Speaker 6 (04:14):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
The plane had to account for meals whenever they want
to eat because they've got to keep that calorie in it.
They had to prepare 2,000 meals. Oh, my Lord. Because
they have a lot of snacks as well, some of
these big boys, the overhead lockers are mainly just full
of snacks.

Speaker 6 (04:31):
Oh, what?

Speaker 1 (04:33):
The Qantas satellite. Why can't it always be.

Speaker 5 (04:36):
That for us?

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Overhead locker snacks? Snack bins.

Speaker 5 (04:39):
That's probably why it's flying so low.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Yeah, that's the weight. It's the weight of the linemen
on that tower. So all those chicken crimpies are going
to be overhead.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Or the Arnott's. Welcome to America.

Speaker 9 (04:50):
Do you think they all got the Qantas pyjamas as well?

Speaker 4 (04:52):
They don't make them in 4, 5 XL.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
10 XL? Although if you've been to Queensland, they maybe should.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
The Christian O'Connell Show podcast.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
We have some amazing tickets that is literally going to
make someone's year. The big game tomorrow, this NFL game tomorrow,
the Rams and the 49ers at MCG is a historic event.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
It really is.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
It's the first ever regular season game in Australia. I
think the NFL are doing 11 of these international games
around the world. They're obviously trying to export it and
force it on different countries. In a very American way.
I don't know if they're going to force the Venezuelans
to watch one, but we'll wait and see.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
It starts here.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
If you can conquer Australia, then Venezuela will be an
absolute pushover. We have a pair of tickets sold out very,
very quickly. They were immediately, when the tickets went on sale,
over 100,000 people in the queue online, 30,000 of which
were Americans.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
I reckon because the 49ers have done such a good
job of wandering around, turning up to places, meeting the fans,
a lot of neutrals. I'm certainly going to be a 49ers.
I'm watching the game on TV tomorrow. But I'll be
cheering on the 49ers. I think they've done a great
PR job.

Speaker 5 (06:06):
Definitely. I've sort of got it in for the Rams.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
Me too. They feel like a very American heel turn.
You think you can disrespect our time zone by just
rocking up and jogging out there?

Speaker 5 (06:17):
So you disrespect our time zone?

Speaker 2 (06:19):
How dare you disrespect our time zones? You don't treat
the Southern Hemisphere like that. The 49ers fear it. We're
going to have to get there a week beforehand. Start
going to bed earlier at 7 and 8. They respect you.
They fear the Australian time zone, not those L.A. arrogant rams.

Speaker 6 (06:35):
Boo rams!

Speaker 1 (06:37):
Pete, drive out to the airport now and stop booing them. Absolutely.

Speaker 10 (06:40):
And you know what I'm going to do? I'm going
to present something to you now that I'm going to
be wearing tomorrow morning. I said we'd do this in
an hour's time, but you.

Speaker 9 (06:45):
Just decided not to do that. I'm so excited.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
It does feel like Christmas Eve.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
It does.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
I'm excited.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Come on, you want me to continue the show?

Speaker 10 (06:54):
We've got an official 49, not official, sorry, not official,
49 Ramblers jersey with the Christian O'Connell show on the back, baby.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Wow, that is a crop top you're going to be
wearing there, sir. Get that belly button out.

Speaker 5 (07:08):
I said medium.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Where's the man's one?

Speaker 9 (07:11):
Well, look, you're right. I said medium, but I'm thinking,
that's not a medium.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Surely, is it? unofficial Pete.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Also you managed to combine both the teams there 49er
Rams is what you just referred to them and he's
our NFL correspondent.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
Also I love the fact that right now all the
Australian media is at the airport Pete's got a laptop
with flight radar on, so he can give us live
updates here in the studio. An hour away, they're all there.
We flew you here. Why didn't you wait and sleep
at the airport?

Speaker 6 (07:42):
You know what?

Speaker 1 (07:42):
I was just there last night. You're right. You should
have stayed.

Speaker 9 (07:46):
That's so smart when you think about it like that, right?

Speaker 1 (07:48):
With your lady-sized footy top on there. That was so small. Oh, no.

Speaker 9 (07:53):
We've got an NFL expert coming in soon, too. I'm
going to look like an idiot. Doesn't matter. It's all good.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
It looks good.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
This show are 49ers fans because they've been here for
a week. The interesting thing is because, obviously, because Australia
is like living on another planet, okay, is that actually
the two different teams have got two wildly different strategies
to coping with the time zone difference. So, obviously, all
future teams coming here will look at the game tomorrow

(08:20):
and whatever the winning team did, whether you get there
a couple of hours beforehand, or you get there a
week beforehand, they will not do what the losing team did.

Speaker 5 (08:27):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
They're all saying we've looked at the science. They're all
looking at the same science. But it's amazing how two
different teams have seen the same science and come up
from two different angles.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
I don't understand the Rams' science. You can't just ignore
something and be like, oh, well, we'll just pretend that
that doesn't exist. They're looking at the whole season, not
just one game.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Wow. So if you adjust too much, then when they
fly back. That's a good point. So I understand.

Speaker 9 (08:51):
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
Because yesterday, Sandell went down a big rabbit hole reading
up a lot about this. And I was watching their
coach justify it.

Speaker 4 (08:59):
I guess maybe we have to see in two weeks'
time how the teams go then as well.

Speaker 5 (09:03):
Take that into account.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
So they've just arrived here, right? The Rams, the LA Rams.
They're leaving straight after the game as well. Wow. The
49ers aren't.

Speaker 5 (09:11):
They really don't like Melbourne.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
No.

Speaker 6 (09:13):
No.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
They cannot wait to get out of it.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Also, they've got 15,000 kilos worth of equipment with them
right now. Good luck trying to get your bag off
the carousel.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
I mean, who picks up all that stuff? I feel
sorry for the ground crew. It takes them an hour
or two just to get our bags.

Speaker 5 (09:31):
And then they have to get through Australian customs.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
The pads, the helmets, and then, oh my God, Border Patrol.
They are going to miss.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
That 10.30 a.m. start tomorrow is going to be delayed.
You might have meant, obviously, security in America.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
That's one thing. not Australian Border Patrol.

Speaker 5 (09:45):
Yeah, especially if they're trying to bring any fruit or
anything like that.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Oh, my God, those snacks and stuff like that.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
What's in this Gatorade bottle is definitely over 100 mils, guys.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
The Christian O'Connell Show podcast.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
How have you come to have stolen a cat, Rio? Well,
we have.

Speaker 5 (10:01):
Okay, okay.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
I see you guys getting a pet within the next
six months as well.

Speaker 5 (10:07):
It is a legal grey area.

Speaker 4 (10:08):
Yes, so my partner and I, Will, there's this neighbourhood
cat and it's got a beautiful coat on it.

Speaker 5 (10:13):
We don't think it's feral.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
Long hair, short hair?

Speaker 5 (10:16):
Short hair, but.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Really like a very handsome cat. And it's been coming
to our backyard every day, probably for the last two weeks.
And now it's kind of spiraled out of control where
we honestly have the cat pretty much every day for
at least six hours.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Okay, my first question as a cat owner, are you
feeding it? No.

Speaker 6 (10:35):
Oh.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
We just, well, we don't have food for it.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
Well, if you don't start feeding it, that cat will
move on to another easy mark.

Speaker 5 (10:41):
We show it unconditional love, which I think maybe.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Cats expect that as a given.

Speaker 5 (10:46):
My partner, Will, has got a.

Speaker 4 (10:47):
Little water bowl for it and he has talked about.

Speaker 8 (10:50):
Yeah, this is how it starts.

Speaker 11 (10:52):
My mum's got a cat and it's actually not my
mum's cat. I reckon it goes between about three or
four houses.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
Yeah, this is common. A lot of people have this
kind of surrogate cat. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (11:01):
You say you think it's cheating on another family with us.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
They don't see it as cheating. It's just catting.

Speaker 11 (11:06):
It's how they do it, yeah. I went around there
the other day. It's sitting on my dad's lap under
the heater. It's not even their cat.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
A dog would never do that. Cats would have no
problem with that.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
No. It's got its own chair in the lounge room.
It's a really comfortable chair. It used to be my chair.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
What?

Speaker 5 (11:22):
And now the cat sits on it all the time.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
I'm afraid he's seen two gay guys living together as
easy marks.

Speaker 7 (11:27):
He's right.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
He'll sit where he wants. And you guys will go
knocking up some dinner soon. So are you having a
feeling for this cat?

Speaker 4 (11:35):
I love this cat. He sends me maybe six or
eight photos of it every day.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
Cats, because they're so aloof, they have this kind of
charm and charisma to them.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
Our cat, Larry, you never see him during the day.
And if you disturb him during the day, he will
attack you. During the day is Larry time. He sleeps
wherever he wants to sleep. And then he materialises in
the evening when, lo and behold, it's feeding time.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
And then he's my best friend.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
So while I'm watching TV, to remind me, to feed him,
even though he's never not been fed, he will sit
on my shoulder, on the pillow behind my head. So
there's no way I'm going to forget. I have to
watch TV with this great big fat cat, Larry. Like
a pirate, parrot, but a fat cat, Larry. And because he's,

(12:21):
we also, I don't know if there's other cat owners
who can relate to this. I've got one of these timers.
So at 3 a.m., it opens to give him a snack. Otherwise,
he shoulder charges the door. Oh, And starts doing this move.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Feed me. And I'm like.

Speaker 5 (12:38):
No, shut up, Larry.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
I've been going anywhere. I've got nothing else to do
than this. Feed me. Literally starts putting his big, big
old shoulder. He could play for one of the football
teams tomorrow. Against the dawn, rattling it. So I was like,
you've won, Larry. And we had to buy this timer
thing that opens at 3 a.m. So you hear, when
it opens, I don't hear the little thing open, but
I hear this. Well, he's dropped.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
From somewhere where he's been sleeping, then turn, turn, and
then it goes quiet while he's having his snack, and
then another as he's dropped down from the kitchen top.
Do any of the cat owners have to feed their
cats in the middle of the night?

Speaker 3 (13:16):
The Christian O'Connell Show.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
Go on.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Podcast.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
Good morning to Rico Joe, our cat Vader. Great name
for a cat, Vader. Well, not that I sleep also
beyond 5 a.m. We have a material feature wall behind
our bed.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
What's that?

Speaker 8 (13:34):
Is that like a, you know, just a fabric headboard,
I'd suggest.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Fabric headboard?

Speaker 3 (13:38):
Yeah, I'd reckon.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
He will claw it until we wake him up, until
we wake up and feed him. If we don't wake up,
he sits at the end of bed and then starts
dry reaching.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
That's a great move, isn't it?

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Kids, if you're listening now, start doing that to your parents.
Just go into their bedroom and start dry heaving. They'll
get up and give you an early breakfast. The amount
of times I've been doing the Zoom thing and Larry
will come in and just start dry heaving and cough
up a furball. And then it happened the other week
and I had to sit there for another 45 minutes
while it was by my feet, moist and steamy.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
And try and carry on with a podcast interview.

Speaker 4 (14:19):
Fuck.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
All right, so we're looking for your picnic bands. Best
in show, we get you the next five minutes for
your picnic bands. $ 250 worth of flowers. Thanks to Flowers
for Everyone. Say hello to Spring with Palm Fresh Flowers
from flowersforeveryone.com.au.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
Golds yesterday with picnic bands. Limp Basket.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
Drinks are in the Eskimo, Joe. Wine Coolio bag. Ben
Fold chairs. And the winner was Stephen with the Finsker Brothers.
All right, some extra time wasters from me for picnic bands.
Guns N' Roses.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
Oh, gold. It's the wine of choice, I reckon. Prosecco
and Rose, isn't it?

Speaker 5 (14:55):
Yeah, you couldn't go like a heavy Shiraz or something.

Speaker 1 (14:57):
No, no, no.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
You're all sleepy there on that picnic blanket. What about
a Waham sandwich?

Speaker 1 (15:01):
Waham.

Speaker 7 (15:02):
Silver.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
Alicia Esquise. Gold. And Fleetwood Mac Pack, in case the
weather turns. Silver plus. Ria, what have you got? Cornhole. Cornhole, yes.
Bring it back. Gold. Cornhole.

Speaker 5 (15:21):
Death cab for charcuterie.

Speaker 1 (15:22):
Oh, that's very, very, very, very good. Gold plus.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
And alfresco green.

Speaker 1 (15:29):
Now, that's also three golds there.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
The Christian O'Connell Show podcast.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
So the Ellie Rams have finally landed. Do you know
what's blowing my mind right now is they landed just
after 6 a.m.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
This morning. And obviously, they're not going to be shuffling
through with all the other passengers that just happened to
land from flights around the world. They're the LA Rams.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
They're very VIPs, aren't they, in Australia right now for
the game. So they'll be straight on to coaches. They
won't be hanging around. You know, the quarterbacks aren't going
to be hanging around baggage carousel getting off their Louis
Vuitton matching cases. The other team members, you know, coaches
will be doing all of that. So they'll be straight
on to matching big coaches driving from Tullamore. So in

(16:10):
the traffic today, Look around you. They're going to get
stuck in the rush hour.

Speaker 5 (16:15):
Yes, there's no way out.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
They've still got to make their way.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
That Tullamarine, that route into the city, I'm guessing they're
not going to go straight to the hotel for snooze time.
You've had your sleep now. Okay, it is time to
pad up and get out there and start training. I
guess their first training session here in Australia.

Speaker 5 (16:30):
All that science, all that research, you didn't account for
the Melbourne highways.

Speaker 6 (16:34):
No, no, no.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
Welcome to Melbourne.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
You've landed at the worst time of the day, 7 a.m.
All right, extra time on the time waster. We're looking
for your picnic bands. Out for grabs, $ 250 worth of delicious, fresh,
spring-fresh flowers for everyone.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
Rio, you ready to mark? I am. Bananarama bread. Silver.
Mozzy crawl.

Speaker 7 (16:55):
Gold.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
Fleetwood mac and cheese.

Speaker 5 (16:58):
Silver plus.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Today's the day the teddy bear naked ladies have their picnic.

Speaker 7 (17:02):
All right.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
White snake under blanket. That sounds... Dodgy as.

Speaker 5 (17:12):
Bronze, I guess.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
It's a terrifying image, Rob. Shame on you, sir. Nickel Backpack.

Speaker 5 (17:17):
Silver Plus.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
Hoochie and the Blowflies.

Who is today's winner?

Speaker 5 (18:30):
Benjamin with spilling whiny.

Speaker 3 (18:32):
The Christian O'Connell Show podcast.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
It feels like Christmas Eve today. The buzz here in
Melbourne is electric right now. The sun's up. The Rams
are finally showing up for the game as well. 49ers
have been here all week, and I think they've won
over all the locals. Neutral fans will be cheering on
the 49ers tomorrow. We have a pair of tickets, which
are going to give away to go to the huge
game tomorrow. And one of the highlights of this week

(18:57):
has been all the American sports journalists who've been over
wandering around here, who've been here for the week with
the 49ers, filming videos, discovering what chicken salt is, that
the coffee really is some of the best in the world.
And I think it's been a really nice way because
when I moved here from London eight years ago, for
my first two years, people would always say to me,
why did you move here from London? And it was

(19:19):
because this is a nice place here as well. And
I think Australia sometimes has this kind of a lack
of self-confidence. There's a cultural cringe. I don't think you
realize what a great country it is. And there's so
many great highlights. And so We've got David Lombardian, who's
a reporter for the San Francisco Standard. And I started
watching your stuff on Monday, so we really want to
say thank you for being so effuse about Melbourne and Australia, David.

Speaker 1 (19:43):
Welcome to the show.

Speaker 7 (19:44):
Thank you. And I think I had chicken salt for
the first time yesterday. Now that you mentioned it, they
put it on my fries at this Australian burger place
called Andrews.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
And it was really good.

Speaker 7 (19:54):
The fries were addictive with it. They asked me if
I want a chicken salt or some kind of other salt.
I had no idea. I'm like, just pick for me.
They said, you want the chicken salt. So I had
the chicken salt.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
Australians are very proud of Australians. Now, the first thing
I have to check, your surname then, Lombardi.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
Yeah. Are you any relation to one of the greatest
coaches of all time, Vince?

Speaker 7 (20:13):
I mess with people and I probably could mess with
you guys. You should do.

Speaker 5 (20:16):
We wouldn't know.

Speaker 1 (20:17):
You could be his son.

Speaker 7 (20:18):
I'm Vince Lombardi's great, great, or maybe just great grandson. Grandson?
I don't know what the appropriate, I'm not related to him,
but I have a perfect name for football.

Speaker 1 (20:28):
Yeah, that is.

Speaker 7 (20:28):
And people love it. And that is the Lombardi trophy.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
You're right.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
And tell me this. What have you made of Australia
this week then? Because you've been here all week.

Speaker 7 (20:36):
It's such a fascinating country. I started in Brisbane, worked
my way down to the Gold Coast, the Byron Bay area,
flew down here, and I'm going to see Sydney after this.
The first part that really, really kind of messed with
my head, but it's awesome, is that there's a Pacific

(20:56):
Coast Highway. It's called the Pacific Motorway here. We have
that in California.

Speaker 1 (21:00):
All right.

Speaker 7 (21:00):
So this is like the mirror inverse of We're on
the other side of the Pacific Ocean. We're in the
southern hemisphere. And so I see so many things that
are similar, but they're a little bit different. The burger yesterday,
for example, there's a place in San Francisco called Sam's
that Anthony Bourdain went to. And he said it's one
of the top three burgers in the world. I love Sam's.
Shout out to them if you ever go to the U.S.

(21:23):
Andrew's reminded me of Sam's, like the vibe and everything.
But the burger was different. It was Australian. It was
really good. So everything here is different. reminds me a
little bit of California going down the coast, except in
a slightly different way. And it's like really hard to
put your finger on it. But that's the biggest compliment
I could give because I love California. And I think

(21:45):
that Australia and the coastline and the cities have similar vibes.
And now we're here in Melbourne and there's some San
Francisco in this city, quite literally.

Speaker 2 (21:56):
Yeah, I've been to San Francisco. I would definitely say that.
You've got a bay as well here in Melbourne as well.
One thing I've noticed from your videos, you really love
tram talk. At first, I thought you were a tram correspondent.
You love our tram system. A lot of heavy video
about the trams.

Speaker 7 (22:13):
There's a cool connection there, and you're right. I'm half Czech, actually.
My mom is from Prague, and I spent the summers there,
and they have a crazy, intricate tram system as well.
So I would spend... As an American, we don't really
have much... in terms of public transit. People love their
cars there. Probably the two most robust public transit systems

(22:36):
are New York City and San Francisco. And San Francisco
is not nearly as robust as New York. So I
think there is a little bit of a fascination from
Americans when you could show up somewhere and you don't
have to drive everywhere. And then Melbourne has the I think,
biggest tram network in the world.

Speaker 1 (22:52):
The only reason I now know this is from watching
your video.

Speaker 5 (22:55):
I didn't know that.

Speaker 2 (22:56):
None of us on the team knew this until David,
the American, told us.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
On a video.

Speaker 7 (23:01):
Did you see the connection to San Francisco? Melbourne donated
two of their... Donated one of their trams. Two of them, yeah,
to San Francisco. And they run there. So when I
showed up here, I saw the old historic one. It's
the older one. It's like the one that just, I think,
takes the scenic route. I saw it and I'm like,
I've seen that.

Speaker 1 (23:19):
In San Francisco. What's going on?

Speaker 5 (23:21):
That's my trust.

Speaker 1 (23:23):
We're screwing with you, David.

Speaker 7 (23:27):
So at that point, I was like, oh, this is cool.
Let me look up some other connections. And the neighborhood
called Richmond in Melbourne is the namesake for the Richmond
district in San Francisco.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (23:38):
So there's some cool connections between the two cities. And
I think it's fitting that the 49ers, the San Francisco
49ers are playing the first game here.

Speaker 1 (23:45):
Now, tell me this, though. Big game tomorrow. Australia's really,
really excited.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
What's fascinating about this as well is it's two completely
teams with two very different strategies about how to deal
with the sleep and the time zone and the 15-hour flight.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
So, obviously, your team, the 49ers, you've been here for
a week.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
The team have been getting used to acclimatising to the
time zone here. Rams have just arrived. Don't you think
it's going to be interesting tomorrow? They've all been looking
at the same science. Two vastly different teams with different approaches.

Speaker 7 (24:12):
So the Rams have decided to just ignore jet lag.

Speaker 1 (24:15):
Yes.

Speaker 7 (24:16):
Literally, though, they say we would rather play the game
at 5 p.m. on our body clock time, which is
the time that it's going to be at 10 a.m.

Speaker 1 (24:24):
On Thursday, yes. Yeah, when it starts.

Speaker 7 (24:27):
What I think they're not taking seriously enough is just
being on a plane for that long makes you ache
and just throws you off in a different way. So
even if you're on the body clock time that you
want to be on, They could say, oh yeah, we
have lay flat seats. These guys are 6'6, 320 pounds.

(24:48):
Not all of them are going to sleep or not
all of them are going to get the you know,
most restful.

Speaker 1 (24:52):
So how they got extra wide beds for some of
the big guys.

Speaker 7 (24:55):
They're on the Qantas, a three 80. So they, they
have the, is.

Speaker 1 (24:58):
That like the widest plane in the world?

Speaker 7 (25:00):
That's the, that's the double decker where they have the, the,
the ultra first class at the top. So I think
the biggest players might get the best seats. So, so I,
in theory, I could see what they mean, but I
think it's.

Speaker 1 (25:10):
A giant share house.

Speaker 6 (25:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (25:12):
A frat house in the sky. Animal house in the sky.

Speaker 7 (25:16):
And then the Niners took the same flight and they
have already reported back saying it took us three or
four days to feel normal. I just think that the
Rams did this on paper and it sounded good in
their heads. But I think in practice, once you're on
the plane, yeah, you could say, oh, this is really comfortable.
But once you're on it, you're like, wait, you know,
this is nice, but I still need a couple of
days to recover. That's my opinion. Now, listen, I know

(25:38):
obviously you're biased, um, but what do you think is
going to happen? What can we expect in the game tomorrow?
It's going to be a really good competitive game. The
NFL picked these two teams for a reason. They're in
the same division. They play twice a year, unless they
play three times a year, like they did a few
years ago in the NFC championship game. So they know
each other really well. The games between the Niners and
the Rams are always very competitive. Last year, they split.

(26:01):
The 49ers won one, the Rams won one. So it, it, it,
It's a toss-up, I think. I think that the Rams
not having Aaron Donald yet, who's their legendary defensive tackle,
came out of retirement but didn't make the trip, works
in the favor of the 49ers. I think the 49ers
will have Nick Bosa, will have George Kittle. Those are

(26:22):
two superstars. So I think the edge will be that
they got here sooner and the fans will be on
their side.

Speaker 1 (26:29):
Our whole team in show now, we're all 49ers because
of that.

Speaker 7 (26:34):
So, listen, in football, I don't know how... In football,
it might be more important than in any other sport
because there are actual technical ramifications of crowd noise.

Speaker 1 (26:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (26:46):
Because there's so much communication.

Speaker 1 (26:47):
It's a real thing.

Speaker 7 (26:48):
Yeah, it's a real thing. So, you know, anybody listening
that's going to the game, if you're offended by the
Rams disrespecting the city and the country by showing up
so late, you have to be as loud as possible...
When the Rams have the football right when they line
up at the line of scrimmage, because then the Rams

(27:10):
can't hear any of.

Speaker 1 (27:11):
What they're doing. Oh, so all the calls will just
get lost.

Speaker 7 (27:13):
And they have to go to silent count. So they
have to start doing stuff with their hands. And that
actually really, really impacts how things operate.

Speaker 1 (27:22):
I never thought about that.

Speaker 7 (27:22):
And the defensive linemen can actually time the snap count
then and get like a split second advantage over the
offensive linemen trying to block him. because they can rely
on the visual cues. And so the defense is statistically
more likely to get to the quarterback and is more
successful when it is playing at home because the crowd

(27:43):
is on its side.

Speaker 1 (27:44):
Right. And yet this is meant to be a home
game for the Rams. And one thing the 49ers did great,
not only did they show up earlier, but they've had
all the ex-players and legends. Jerry Rice created chaos yesterday
in Fed Square by going into the transport bar.

Speaker 2 (27:58):
You know, one of the greatest... receivers and players ever.
And so I suppose the Rams didn't at least send
some former players and legends out here in advance because
this is supposed to be a home game for them.

Speaker 7 (28:09):
So what's really funny is that whenever the 49ers play
the Rams in Los Angeles, it's also supposed to be
a home game for the Rams, but it ends up
being a home game for the 49ers. The Rams don't
even own LA. I think Australians should understand that. So
there's a rather complex history there, but the Rams... have

(28:29):
never been good at cultivating a fan base. When they
were in LA, they moved to Orange County, which is
over an hour away, and then they moved to St.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
Louis.

Speaker 7 (28:37):
So they abandoned Southern California, and that was during the
window where the 49ers were a dynasty. So the LA area,
an entire generation said, we're just going to be 49ers fans.
And so now when you go down to LA, there is.
I would say 70, 80% of the stadium is 49ers
fans and the Rams that their quarterback Stafford has complained

(28:59):
that he has to run silent count in his own stadium.

Speaker 1 (29:02):
Right. So they're going to get that treatment here as well. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (29:05):
So, so here's the, here's the kicker, the, the Rams, they,
they got this Australia game and Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers
coach is convinced. And I think he has inside information
that the Rams lobbied the NFL to to send the
49ers as their opponent because the Rams did not want
to be embarrassed in their home stadium.

Speaker 1 (29:23):
Oh, wow.

Speaker 7 (29:24):
And now because they haven't shown up in time and
they didn't realize how seriously people take the sports here,
they might have turned the crowd against them. So they're
going to have the same issue. Love that.

Speaker 2 (29:35):
I love the backstory. And so are you excited about
the game? Do we think we're going to see this
to be an annual thing? I think that obviously there's
a deal where there's two more games over the next
four years, because I think what's also surprised even us
on the team is to... how much australians have really
got behind this week we've loved it.

Speaker 7 (29:52):
Yes i think they're coming back next year i think
they've already made modifications to the g to the locker
rooms i think there's four locker rooms in there but
they've been able to because you need bigger ones for
football because the Two of the locker rooms to make one. Yeah,
I read something about that. So I think that they're
doing stuff that is not meant for one-time use. The

(30:15):
NFL wants to come back. And Roger Goodell has been
glowing about how well this week is going. And I
think the NFL has already decided. It's been a joy
having you guys here. Thanks for coming on the show.
Enjoy Sydney the weekend and enjoy the game tomorrow. Go 49ers.
Dave Lombardi, thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (30:36):
What is it about very, very tall people where everyone goes,
bloody hell, we still revere tall.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
People, don't we?

Speaker 2 (30:45):
Does it come from an ancient time? I don't understand,
but just occasionally when David turned up at the station,
by the way, I overheard intern Pete go.

Speaker 1 (30:54):
So this is the radio station. Have you seen a
radio station?

Speaker 2 (30:57):
The guy is a journalist and has been for 25 years.
I don't think he's not seen a radio station. Anyway,
Patricia Kelly comes in going, bloody hell, the guest's here
now and he's so tall.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
What do you think he was? Six, five, six?

Speaker 2 (31:10):
I struggle not to bring up in the interview and go,
have you played basketball? Why is it you're never far
away from talking about basketball when you meet someone incredibly tall?

Speaker 4 (31:18):
You have to, there's something in the human mind where
you have to say to a tall person, you're tall.

Speaker 2 (31:23):
The reaction from the team was literally like we're interviewing
a giant. We're interviewing America's tallest human being ever. And
also talking about the NFL, if there's time. But David
was a great chat. What a lovely guy. Thank you
so much for your nice message and saying a great interview. Yes,
we all learned quite a lot, actually, about the game tomorrow.
And also, 80% of that chat was tram talk.

Speaker 1 (31:47):
I think he's got a fetish for that. I don't
want to say it to the guy because he's tall.
He's a giant.

Speaker 2 (31:51):
He could pick Rio and up and have us a snack.
Pretzel sticks or something. And I was talking about this earlier.
The LA Rams landed just after 6 a.m.

Speaker 1 (32:00):
This morning.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
And of course, no matter how famous you are and
how big a team you play for, you will meet
Melbourne traffic. I'm sure you can run through some big
offence lines, but you cannot run through the Melbourne traffic
at rush hour. They're going to be stuck in their coaches.
And I'm seeing a very familiar photos here of traffic.
But in this traffic, Troy and Rachel from A2Z traffic,

(32:23):
we've just passed the three buses with the Rams on.
And the driver waved with Rams clothing on. Two police
cars are escorting. Well, hopefully the drivers have got this
radio station on. Welcome to Australia, to the LA Rams.
The drivers weren't trying to find out what the winning
song is today for the ice house competition.

Speaker 1 (32:42):
It's Great Southern Land. Good morning to you, Bron.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
Listening to us in Sydney. Christian, speaking of tall people,
small people get the same. I'm five foot three and constantly,
almost daily asked if I'm a jockey or horse rider. Christian,
as a welcome to Melbourne for the LA Rams, the buses,
the coaches. to drive into the Montague Street Bridge. Nothing
says welcome to Melbourne more than that. Ryan, Christian, my

(33:05):
daughter is 20. She's six foot six. Was over six
foot when she started high school at the age of 12.
She stopped daily, asked, how tall are you?

Speaker 1 (33:14):
She just got back from a semester college in the
USA and constantly asked and stopped everywhere she went. Christian,
small thing, big joy. I've just seen the LA Rams.

Speaker 2 (33:24):
Despite the police escort, it doesn't matter.

Speaker 1 (33:26):
They're still stuck in traffic. It cheered me up.

Speaker 2 (33:29):
Small thing, big joy coming up next on the Christian
O'Connell Show.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
The Christian O'Connell Show. Go on. Podcast.

Speaker 2 (33:38):
If you listen to us here in Melbourne right now
and you see the coaches with the police outriders, the
police escort, it's the N.A.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
Rams.

Speaker 2 (33:46):
Please let us know where they're headed. I really want
to know. Surely they've got to start going to practice now.
They're not going to start unpacking at the hotel, are they?
Go and find out where the pool is. What floor
is the gym? It's not overloading the gym. Annoying everyone
who's staying there. I'd love to know where, surely they're
going to the G to actually have a look around
where they're playing only tomorrow morning.

Speaker 4 (34:06):
Yeah, they've got to. They're on the clock at the moment.
They've got no time for anything else.

Speaker 1 (34:10):
I love as well as David, when he was Chancellor,
was obviously given a secret intel, the fact that obviously
they've been sort of doing, I mean, Australia loves a Renault,
but they've been doing some sort of secret Renault at
the G with the lockers.

Speaker 5 (34:21):
Yes, I didn't know that.

Speaker 1 (34:22):
To make it Yank friendly. Oh, really? Typical Americans. They
take over everywhere. Leave our lockers alone, Yanks. That'll be
the headline. All right. Small thing, big joy. Christian, small thing,
big joy.

Speaker 2 (34:35):
Every morning I walk past a coffee shop and that
smell of fresh coffee.

Speaker 1 (34:39):
It's one of the great smells, isn't it? It's incredible.

Speaker 2 (34:41):
That's from Anton. Christian, small thing, big joy. There was
the perfect amount of milk in the carton. And when
I got my husband's coffee and my tea the exact colour,
we got.

Speaker 1 (34:50):
It just right first to go. Patsy, what's it for you?
Small thing, big joy this week.

Speaker 11 (34:55):
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday. When I picked
it up off the counter, it was still warm, like
a warm pussycat.

Speaker 8 (35:01):
And I thought, oh, that's going.

Speaker 1 (35:02):
To make a mess. You get warm pussycats off the counter?

Speaker 11 (35:04):
You know when you pick up a cat and it's
all warm underneath because it's been asleep and all cosy?

Speaker 1 (35:09):
Yeah, I do know what you mean. Yeah, that's what
this loaf of bread was like. And what loaf were
you getting? What are you getting? Sourdough?

Speaker 7 (35:13):
Sliced?

Speaker 1 (35:13):
Pre-sliced?

Speaker 11 (35:14):
No, I was getting what they call a capeseed loaf.
at my local Baker's Delight, which is lots and lots
of seeds.

Speaker 8 (35:19):
It's delicious. Really lovely with avocado and tomato for lunch.

Speaker 9 (35:23):
Toast it.

Speaker 1 (35:24):
Spectacular. Oh, like a bruschetta.

Speaker 8 (35:26):
Oh, it's beautiful.

Speaker 1 (35:27):
Oh, my word. That is a great lunch. You know,
in terms with lunch, I don't want too much clear up. Yes.
I'm so tired. I can't handle the clear up.

Speaker 5 (35:35):
A lot of seeds, though, everywhere. It's a nightmare. No,
it's not.

Speaker 8 (35:38):
It's toast for heaven's sake.

Speaker 1 (35:39):
Yeah, it is, bird lady. Patsy the bird lady. Ria,
what's a small thing, big joy for you?

Speaker 4 (35:46):
When you're online shopping and you're after just one thing
and it's just over the free shipping.

Speaker 1 (35:52):
Oh, yes. It sets a target when you see that
free shipping for orders over. Yes, you all see that.

Speaker 5 (35:59):
Everything, every time.

Speaker 1 (36:01):
You think you're getting something from the man. Yes, I
got one back. Oh, they're going to be paying me money.

Speaker 4 (36:06):
Because I reckon they put stuff deliberately under, just under,
so you have to go, oh, do I need some
socks maybe? Oh, yeah, and I need some hair ties
and a USB charger and stuff like that.

Speaker 5 (36:16):
But when you get them.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
Yes. The Christian O'Connell Show podcast.

Speaker 2 (36:23):
Judging by the amount of messages I've had, why tall
people have so much fascination for us, we need to
find Australia's tallest person. That would actually be huge. If
we said we're going to hire the MCG to do
it properly, we'd sell out. They're actually going to parade
nothing but tall people. We're going to have a carnival
of giants.

Speaker 1 (36:43):
Behold!

Speaker 2 (36:43):
Do you think there's anyone to be proud of the
tallest humans in this great southern land?

Speaker 1 (36:51):
Do you reckon we've got any seven-footers here in Australia?

Speaker 5 (36:54):
I have a mate who's 6'9.

Speaker 2 (36:56):
Isn't it amazing how if you've got a tool, mate,
you know exactly their hygiene?

Speaker 5 (36:59):
Yes, I talk about him six times a year.

Speaker 1 (37:01):
You would do. You've got a 6'9.

Speaker 5 (37:04):
He's huge.

Speaker 1 (37:04):
That is massive.

Speaker 5 (37:05):
I've known him since 2010, and every time I see him,
I still go.

Speaker 6 (37:09):
Holy crap, you're.

Speaker 1 (37:11):
And is he in a big-sized bed? Can he be
in one of our human beds?

Speaker 4 (37:15):
His whole family's in a custom-made house. They had to
renovate their whole house.

Speaker 1 (37:19):
Why have you never spoken to me about this before?

Speaker 5 (37:21):
It's never come up.

Speaker 1 (37:22):
No, you're right. What do you mean a custom-made house?

Speaker 4 (37:25):
Well, they had to renovate all the, what's that, like
doorways and stuff and ceilings in the house because they
had to keep ducking in a normal-sized house.

Speaker 2 (37:33):
Once we get back into the world of tall, there
used to be around the corner from our radio station
in the UK that was this big.

Speaker 1 (37:39):
There was a London, literally, it was a clothes shop
for tall people. The size of the shirts in the window.
They were like, giants have to have their own shirts.

Speaker 2 (37:49):
It was called High and Mighty. I am high and
I am mighty. It was called High and Mighty. They
had special hats for them as well, for their big noggins.

Speaker 5 (38:00):
Extra tall, extra short.

Speaker 1 (38:02):
I guess a smaller, shrunken down baseball cap.

Speaker 10 (38:05):
I just remember I had drinks with the world's tallest
man once in Dubai.

Speaker 1 (38:08):
I just remember.

Speaker 5 (38:10):
That was the biggest sentence I've ever heard.

Speaker 1 (38:13):
No, it was. You'd gone silent then.

Speaker 2 (38:15):
You were staring blankly at me, not the first time
during the show. And it looked like you were waiting
for an Apple pinwheel, you know, the little update? And
you got the right update. So was this an accidental
thing or you were there to interview him?

Speaker 1 (38:25):
No, I was at a nightclub.

Speaker 9 (38:26):
It was a circus nightclub and they'd hired.

Speaker 1 (38:28):
Was he performing? Well, he was.

Speaker 5 (38:29):
What do you mean a circus?

Speaker 2 (38:30):
Have you been to Dubai?

Speaker 1 (38:32):
Have you been to Dubai?

Speaker 5 (38:33):
I have not.

Speaker 10 (38:34):
So they had the world's tallest man and the world's
shortest person there, and he was there, but we got
thrown out because he was choking me, and not in
a weird way.

Speaker 9 (38:42):
We were just doing a bit of a funny photo.

Speaker 1 (38:44):
Oh, nothing funnier than choking photos.

Speaker 9 (38:46):
As I say that out loud, terrible. In the end,
we both got thrown out, so we had a Dr
Pepper at the front of the.

Speaker 1 (38:52):
Dr Pepper. I know.

Speaker 3 (38:54):
I'm one of those.

Speaker 1 (38:55):
It's not even your normal go-to soft drink to have.

Speaker 9 (38:58):
I'm going to find you the photo now.

Speaker 1 (39:00):
Don't worry about it. No problem. We're doing the show.

Speaker 10 (39:03):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (39:04):
So how tall was he? World's tallest person?

Speaker 7 (39:09):
Really tall.

Speaker 5 (39:09):
I just don't know.

Speaker 1 (39:11):
You've met him. I know.

Speaker 9 (39:12):
I can't remember exactly.

Speaker 1 (39:14):
7'3?

Speaker 10 (39:14):
At that stage, he was the world's tallest man. So
I will fact check that and come back to you
on that if that's okay. All I can say is
just really, really tall.

Speaker 5 (39:21):
Apparently, the tallest living man in the world is, well,
this might be the guy, Sultan Kosen from Turkey.

Speaker 1 (39:26):
Is that him?

Speaker 9 (39:27):
He had a sultan-y kind of name.

Speaker 5 (39:28):
Yes, for sure.

Speaker 1 (39:29):
Sultan-y kind of name.

Speaker 5 (39:31):
Eight foot two.

Speaker 1 (39:32):
No way. There's no human being who's eight foot two.

Speaker 9 (39:36):
Eight foot two.

Speaker 1 (39:36):
There's no way.

Speaker 5 (39:38):
The high and mighty Sultan.

Speaker 1 (39:40):
Right. Eight foot two.

Speaker 2 (39:43):
Listen, if anyone knows anyone who's seven foot, if I
hear from one of our listeners by now who's got
an over seven foot friend, I am definitely going to search.
We're definitely going to do a competition for the tallest
people of Australia. But right now, Christian, a friend of mine,
is working part of the backup team with the Rams.
They told me that they are going to the hotel

(40:04):
to sleep, then getting up at 9 p.m. tonight and
staying awake all night, heading to the ground in the morning.

Speaker 1 (40:11):
How are you going to get it when they've all
got blackout blinds?

Speaker 5 (40:14):
Terrible idea. How is that going to work?

Speaker 7 (40:16):
That can't be right.

Speaker 1 (40:17):
They've been sleeping on the plane.

Speaker 9 (40:19):
Surely not.

Speaker 1 (40:20):
What are you doing on your phone? What are you
looking at?

Speaker 9 (40:22):
I was just trying to find the Will Saltsman photo
of me choking. Sorry, I'm going to put my phone away.

Speaker 1 (40:26):
Okay, right now then, we're opening up the lines. We're
opening up the lines.

Speaker 2 (40:29):
We have a pair of tickets to go to the
big game tomorrow at the MCG.

Speaker 1 (40:33):
Rams versus the Raiders, completely sold out. Sold out within minutes.
You can be there.

Speaker 2 (40:38):
It is a pair of the hottest tickets in town
right now. I'm looking to find a big super fan.
This is our kind of super fan Super Bowl. So
if you really want to go, tell us why you
are the biggest NFL super fan. Because if NFL is
your sport, It's hard living in Australia. I know every
time there's a World Cup, we get to experience, oh,

(40:59):
my God, you've got to get up at 3 a.m.

Speaker 1 (41:00):
That's every week supporting your team.

Speaker 2 (41:02):
In fact, I guess if you're a Raiders or Rams
fan because of time difference, it's a bit easier. But
it's still brutal if you're a fan of any of
the other teams. So if you are a super fan,
please give us a call. We've got a pair of tickets.
Just tell us why you're such a big fan.

Speaker 3 (41:17):
The Christian O'Connell Show podcast.

Speaker 2 (41:21):
Hey, Chuckle Sisters, getting the calls right now. There isn't
a team called the Mississippi Vikings.

Speaker 1 (41:25):
It's Minnesota.

Speaker 5 (41:26):
Mississippi.

Speaker 1 (41:28):
Mississippi.

Speaker 5 (41:29):
Mississippi.

Speaker 2 (41:32):
All the messages are pouring through about tall people that
you know. We have to find Australia's tallest human beings.
We must. It's leading us there. Christian, don't forget Luke Longley, 7'2.
Don't forget.

Speaker 5 (41:44):
I can't.

Speaker 1 (41:46):
Shout out to tallness. Christian, I have a mate who
is 6'11. Everywhere we go, people stare at him and
will say, how tall are you?

Speaker 2 (41:55):
Growing up, my dad wanted him to be our rockman
in our football team, but his mum wouldn't let him
play Aussie rules in case he got hurt.

Speaker 1 (42:03):
We remind him every day. He could have been the
greatest rockman ever.

Speaker 2 (42:08):
No, that's Max Gorn. But he's still just our tall mate.
Can you say hello to tall Liam? Yes, I can
say hello to tall Liam.

Speaker 1 (42:14):
That's from Nick Christian.

Speaker 2 (42:14):
I'm married to a man who is six foot eight
and I'm five foot three.

Speaker 3 (42:19):
Oh, wow.

Speaker 7 (42:20):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (42:21):
All right.

Speaker 2 (42:22):
Let's give away some tickets. We've got a pair of tickets.
Go see the NFL game tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (42:26):
This is huge. Sue, it could be you. Hey, it
better be me. Oh, my God. It would be amazing.

Speaker 7 (42:33):
My husband's a huge fan.

Speaker 1 (42:34):
Huge 49ers fan.

Speaker 6 (42:36):
I was in the queue.

Speaker 10 (42:36):
There was 70,000 ahead of me.

Speaker 7 (42:38):
I kept screenshotting.

Speaker 10 (42:39):
We went down to 50,000, got down to the last 2,000.

Speaker 1 (42:44):
We missed out. And then my stupid son messaged me
and goes, Mum.

Speaker 4 (42:48):
I got tickets.

Speaker 11 (42:49):
And I go, yay, can't wait, can't wait.

Speaker 5 (42:51):
And he goes, yeah, me and my mates are going. Oh, no,
you missed out.

Speaker 1 (42:55):
So close. He's taking his mum who gave birth to him. Oh,
his birth mother.

Speaker 5 (43:01):
A little ingrate.

Speaker 1 (43:02):
He's taking his mate.

Speaker 5 (43:04):
And then if I get the tickets, I can be
on the baseline.

Speaker 10 (43:07):
I can do a John Cena and I can do
You Can't See Me.

Speaker 5 (43:12):
You're a cool mum, Sue.

Speaker 8 (43:13):
It would be amazing.

Speaker 6 (43:13):
Yeah, you are.

Speaker 1 (43:14):
You've got it all worked out.

Speaker 6 (43:15):
My husband would be wrapped.

Speaker 1 (43:17):
And what's the team you go for? He goes to
the 49ers. I'm not the Mississippi.

Speaker 6 (43:23):
I'm the Minnesota Vikings.

Speaker 1 (43:24):
All right.

Speaker 3 (43:25):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (43:26):
All right. It could be you, Sue. It could be you. Please.
Stay there. Stay there. Strong case from Sue. Johnny, it
could be you.

Speaker 2 (43:34):
Johnny, tell us all about you being an NFL superfan.

Speaker 6 (43:38):
Christian, I've got the fever. I've got NFL fever.

Speaker 1 (43:43):
What's the temperature? What, you're 100 plus? What's the fever?

Speaker 6 (43:46):
I need those tickets, please. I've been following the NFL
for 37 years. I love the Niners. Melbourne has just exploded. Like,
I'm loving the city right at the moment. The sun's out.
Both teams are here. Christian, I need those tickets, pretty please.

Speaker 1 (44:08):
Oh, this is tough.

Speaker 3 (44:09):
This is tough.

Speaker 1 (44:10):
This is tough. You know what it is? It's that
age old battle. Head versus heart. The heart has Sue
in it. My head has Johnny in it.

Speaker 5 (44:22):
Maybe it's not for us to decide.

Speaker 1 (44:23):
Well, who is going to decide? Maybe the listeners could text.

Speaker 5 (44:26):
Oh, it's hard.

Speaker 1 (44:32):
I don't like doing this. I don't want to let
anyone down.

Speaker 9 (44:37):
Wonder if.

Speaker 1 (44:38):
But... You've got to respect your mum. Sue, you're the winner. Sue,
you're off to the big show tomorrow. You can do
your scene now. You're going. You've got tickets.

Speaker 7 (44:52):
Oh, my God.

Speaker 11 (44:54):
Oh, my God.

Speaker 6 (44:55):
That's freaking amazing.

Speaker 2 (44:56):
And I'll tell you what. I reckon they'll be better
than your sons as well. These are very good tickets.
You're level one. You're right near the.

Speaker 1 (45:03):
Action as well. You can have an amazing morning and
day tomorrow as well. That's amazing. Thank you so much. Pleasure, pleasure, pleasure.
I hope you have the best day with your son
and you will enjoy it.

Speaker 6 (45:13):
I'll be doing a John Cena to him, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (45:16):
Do the Cena, do the Cena. And then please, call
us Monday and let me know what it was all like. Oh, 100%
I will.

Speaker 5 (45:21):
Brilliant.

Speaker 1 (45:21):
100%. Thanks for calling in, Sue. Well done. Enjoy tomorrow.
Thank you. Thanks.

Speaker 3 (45:25):
The Christian O'Connell Show podcast.

Speaker 1 (45:29):
Other big music news this week is that Macy Gray,
who's actually playing on Friday night, has cancelled her performance.
At least she tried. Okay, let's go around the team
right now. Tombstone text. What is the text that's at
the top of your phone right now? Patsy, what's it
for you? What nonsense?

Speaker 8 (45:46):
Yes, what do you mean what nonsense?

Speaker 5 (45:47):
It is nonsense.

Speaker 11 (45:48):
Shenanigans at our place. It says, okay, it's not looking
like it's going to fit. So I talked about, you know,
my new love affair with the drawer in the new dishwasher,
the top drawer.

Speaker 1 (46:00):
Are you frightened of saying the knife and fork drawer? No.

Speaker 8 (46:04):
But what? Cuddle, cuddle, cuddlery.

Speaker 1 (46:07):
Oh, it's Pauline Hanson. Get away.

Speaker 5 (46:11):
Get away.

Speaker 8 (46:11):
Anyway, it was quite an effort getting the damn thing
in there.

Speaker 1 (46:15):
Thank you.

Speaker 5 (46:16):
She tried.

Speaker 11 (46:17):
So when it arrived, it didn't fit in the cavity
of our cabinetry. So I was at work. The love
god was trying to negotiate with the fitter and with
me here, it's not going to fit.

Speaker 8 (46:30):
And I'm thinking, well, that's your job. I'm at work.

Speaker 5 (46:33):
That's the fitter's job, to make it fit.

Speaker 8 (46:34):
So they had to take the wheels off it. Not
the wheels, like the legs. They had to saw the
legs off it to fit it in.

Speaker 11 (46:41):
And then when they got it in, they realised that
the hose to this new dishwasher is on the opposite side.

Speaker 1 (46:47):
You're literally running down the clock for anyone else to
get involved.

Speaker 8 (46:51):
To where our fitting is. So then we had to
get them back.

Speaker 2 (46:53):
Oh dear, the microphone's just broken into the studio there.
I'm very sorry about that. I'll have one of the
engineers next week. Christian, my tombstone text this morning is, Hi, Bella.
Sorry for the late reply. Hope all is well.

Speaker 1 (47:05):
Janelle's.

Speaker 2 (47:05):
This is her tombstone. You missed a call. The caller
didn't leave a message. I don't understand how people do that.

Speaker 1 (47:11):
Please bring in the bins.

Speaker 2 (47:13):
Did you know that 49 was named after the California
gold rush of 1849?

Speaker 1 (47:16):
I did not. I did not know that.

Speaker 2 (47:19):
But what a lovely headstone for people to come pay
their respects, to give them.

Speaker 1 (47:23):
Actually a headstone fun fact.

Speaker 5 (47:26):
Grieve and learn.

Speaker 1 (47:27):
Yes, that's right. Rio, what's yours? You had a nightmare yesterday.

Speaker 5 (47:31):
Oh, I come to you a broken man, Christian.

Speaker 4 (47:33):
My tombstone text is, your next booking at the service
centre is for next week, Tuesday, 12pm.

Speaker 1 (47:38):
Oh no, this better not be about a dishwasher.

Speaker 5 (47:41):
And you see, it wouldn't quite fit into the.

Speaker 1 (47:43):
No, no, no, that saw the legs off, Rio.

Speaker 3 (47:45):
The Christian O'Connell Show.

Speaker 1 (47:47):
Go on.

Speaker 3 (47:48):
Podcast.

Speaker 2 (47:50):
So now I'm the time waster. We're looking for your
hobby movies. Up for grabs, $ 500. Spend at Holy Moly
Golf Club, the wild side of mini-golf. We were talking
yesterday on the show about who has hobbies.

Speaker 1 (48:01):
All right, hobby movies. Goodwill Hunting and Fishing.

Speaker 5 (48:05):
Silver Plus. It's a hobby.

Speaker 1 (48:07):
The greatest... Oh, let's get this button on. The greatest

Speaker 5 (48:13):
Oh, that's gold.

Speaker 1 (48:14):
Just knit one, purl one. Quilting, Miss Daisy.

Speaker 5 (48:19):
Bronze.

Speaker 2 (48:20):
Curious case of Benjamin Button collecting. It's a great hobby.

Speaker 1 (48:25):
Get into it. You know.
Loads of hobbies.

Speaker 4 (48:29):
Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1 (48:29):
Hobby Potter.

Speaker 5 (48:30):
Oh, God.

Speaker 1 (48:33):
Hugh Grant loves, loves a hobby. That's right. Knitting Hill.

Speaker 5 (48:38):
That's gold, too.

Speaker 1 (48:40):
Oh, Ria, what have you got then? Hobby movies today.

Speaker 5 (48:42):
Journaling to the centre of the earth.

Speaker 1 (48:45):
Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes.

Speaker 6 (48:46):
Silver.

Speaker 5 (48:47):
You seemed really excited about that at the start.

Speaker 1 (48:49):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 5 (48:50):
Less excited.

Speaker 1 (48:51):
Poor old hobby. I was grading it more on the hobby, actually.

Speaker 3 (48:54):
Sorry, I got confused.

Speaker 1 (48:55):
Gold for the comedy, silver for the hobby.

Speaker 5 (48:58):
Crochet stupid love.

Speaker 1 (48:59):
Oh, that's gold. Don't mind a bit of crocheting.

Speaker 5 (49:02):
Taxidermy driver. He's turned that.

Speaker 1 (49:04):
It's not a hobby, is it?

Speaker 5 (49:05):
Taxidermy is a hobby.

Speaker 1 (49:06):
That's a guy's job. No, it's not a hobby.

Speaker 2 (49:07):
No, no, you can't turn your hand to being an
amateur one.

Speaker 5 (49:11):
You think you're making a full-time salary as a taxidermist?

Speaker 7 (49:13):
No way.

Speaker 1 (49:13):
You're not stuffing an otter this weekend.

Speaker 5 (49:16):
Excuse me, sir. How dare you? And playing bridge under
the river Kwai.

Speaker 1 (49:22):
Gold. Oh, I hope we get some cribbish ones.

Speaker 3 (49:27):
The Christian. O'Connell Show podcast.

Speaker 2 (49:31):
Time waster today. We're looking for your hobby movies as
your texts come pouring in. I'm just seeing some, obviously
people message the show about all kinds of, just this
random text we had 20 minutes ago. Stop putting diarrhea
medication on the bottom shelf of the pharmacy.

Speaker 1 (49:51):
I guess it was the effort of bending down. You could,
you know, chart.

Speaker 5 (49:55):
Maybe that was their tombstone text.

Speaker 1 (49:58):
I don't run a pharmacy. Sponsored by Chemist Warehouse.

Speaker 5 (50:04):
You asked them to send in their random texts.

Speaker 1 (50:06):
You're right. You're right.

Speaker 5 (50:07):
You wanted this.

Speaker 1 (50:08):
That's someone's tombstone though. They're right though. Why is it
always on that bottom shelf? If you need it, you
don't need bending over like that. That's true. You could
literally call the scene.

Speaker 9 (50:21):
Reaching out for a statement now.

Speaker 1 (50:23):
Anyway. Hobby movies. Nitty Nitty Bang Bang.

Speaker 5 (50:26):

over the edge. Silver plus. Phantom of the op shopping.

Speaker 2 (51:43):
The phantom of the op shopping is here.

Speaker 1 (51:48):
What an amazing story. This week, talking about op shops.

Speaker 2 (51:52):
My local op shop, Alison Clarkson gets fired in a
very humiliating manner by North Melbourne.

Speaker 1 (52:00):
And there's nothing like the revenge. of throwing your ex's
stuff in bin bags.

Speaker 2 (52:06):
He puts all the North Melbourne jerseys and shirts in
bin bags and takes them to my local op shop.

Speaker 1 (52:14):
Vinny's.

Speaker 2 (52:14):
Shout out Vinny's in Hampton. Saw through Clarko's getting rid
of it all.

Speaker 1 (52:18):
Last laugh. That's incredible. It's the bin bags. That's what
you do when you chuck an ex out.

Speaker 5 (52:22):
Yeah, you've got to get rid of all the photos.

Speaker 1 (52:24):
Yeah, that's it. Dirty Darning.

Speaker 5 (52:28):
To darning.

Speaker 1 (52:29):
To darning socks. It's like sewing and that, yeah. Oh, right, gold. Schopenheimer.
That's not a hobby.

Speaker 5 (52:36):
It's a necessity.

Speaker 8 (52:51):
Oh, please.

Speaker 2 (52:54):

Cloudy with a chance.

Speaker 1 (52:59):
Of fantasy football.

Speaker 5 (53:01):
Bronze.

Speaker 1 (53:01):
Snakes on a plane spotting. Silver. If I had stamps,
I'd lick you.

Speaker 9 (53:06):
Oh, that's cold.

Speaker 3 (53:07):
Wowee.

Speaker 1 (53:08):
Buzzer beater there for that one. That's really good. All right.
Who is off to Holy Moly?

Speaker 5 (53:13):
James, well done. We throw Mahjong from the train.

Speaker 1 (53:16):
What? That's not the best one. If I had stamps,
I'd lick you is Bobby Dazzler.

Speaker 3 (53:23):
Yes!

Speaker 1 (53:23):
Yay!

Speaker 2 (53:27):
Well, we, what a show tomorrow, guys. Pete is going
to be live from the MCG.

Speaker 3 (53:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (53:36):
The Eyes of America. Sorry. Let me get that again.
Well done, Rio. Let's check the legals.

Speaker 9 (53:41):
Oh, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (53:43):
No official rights to mention the MCG. Okay. As I
was just saying, Pete, what a show tomorrow. Pete is
live from a car park. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (53:53):
In an undisclosed location in the same postcode of the
sporting precinct of the Southern Hemisphere.

Speaker 5 (54:01):
Public land.

Speaker 1 (54:02):
The car park show tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (54:05):
Tailgating Friday is a feature we've done every Friday for years.

Speaker 5 (54:11):
It's going to be great.

Speaker 2 (54:13):
Now, we have this mark that you'd be down there
chatting to all the fans from all over Australia, all
over the world. The Americans are here that see the teams.
It's going to be incredible. It really has swept the
country and certainly Melbourne up this week. It's something really,
really exciting, something with the NFL game tomorrow. And obviously,
you've got to be there in turn, Pete.

Speaker 9 (54:31):
Absolutely got to be there.

Speaker 10 (54:32):
I'm so excited. And I know, please don't just give
me a moment. Can we just say once? Welcome, everyone,
to Australia.

Speaker 2 (54:39):
It's the right time to say it. It's the right
time to welcome all visitors to Australia.

Speaker 9 (54:43):
Do you know what?

Speaker 10 (54:43):
If you're flying from somewhere around the country today, I
know you're coming to Melbourne, and this city is so,
so ready for it. You know, like almost 10,000 volunteers
and security guards.

Speaker 9 (54:53):
It is Fort Knox around the MCG at the moment.
So I'll be there.

Speaker 5 (54:57):
Volunteer security guards?

Speaker 1 (54:58):
Wow. One of the world's biggest sporting codes. And Australia's
pulled out some retired folks. We drove around to a
load of Vinny's. And op shops, actually, they run those
things like a iron fist, velvet fist.

Speaker 9 (55:14):
Now, do you know what?

Speaker 1 (55:15):
Volunteers. What, they're running off fence, are they?

Speaker 9 (55:18):
I'd like to clarify.

Speaker 1 (55:18):
Smashing big tackles.

Speaker 10 (55:20):
Any of my reporting over the next 24 hours is
all unofficial, by the way, just so there's no affiliation.

Speaker 1 (55:24):
And also, I think the world you need is ill-informed.

Speaker 2 (55:27):
Earlier and earlier, you were cheering on the 49 Rammers.

Speaker 9 (55:30):
I know, I mucked up the name. So I'm going
to be really professional tomorrow. Patsy, I do need your help.

Speaker 1 (55:35):
Give it a go.

Speaker 10 (55:35):
Because it's basically like American security at the MCG.

Speaker 1 (55:39):
We're volunteers. No, no, no.

Speaker 5 (55:41):
No backpacks.

Speaker 9 (55:42):
You have to have clear bags. Where do I get
a clear bag? Is it like a makeup bag?

Speaker 1 (55:45):
Sephora.

Speaker 9 (55:45):
Sephora.

Speaker 5 (55:46):
Okay, so I'm off to Sephora.

Speaker 1 (55:47):
You can tell I've got daughters. They always have those
clear bags when we go on holiday.

Speaker 9 (55:50):
There is a busy day. So I found out the Rams.

Speaker 2 (55:52):
I've only got a busy day with having an appointment
at Sephora. This is our NFL correspondent tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (55:58):
I'm very good. He's taking a clear makeup bag.

Speaker 10 (56:00):
I have found out that 12 o'clock today, the Rams
are doing a public, they're going to be down that
MCG area today, sort of meeting some fans and bits
and pieces, which will be great. So some information there.

Speaker 9 (56:11):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (56:12):
It's got to be yesterday. Just to sort of say, Hey, listen,
you know, you're flying in. We've got to make sure
that it's really worth it.

Speaker 1 (56:19):
You know, get, get everything in order, get all the stats.

Speaker 2 (56:22):
And he's staying with his sister, who's a proper journalist,
and said that he'd found some documents of her lying
around and was getting information without her knowing behind her back.

Speaker 1 (56:31):
Staying in her guest room yesterday. Stealing intel. That's why
he's got this document. He's looking at a PDF there.

Speaker 9 (56:38):
I just haven't proved Reddit. That's the whole thing.

Speaker 1 (56:40):
Paul Kate Depler.

Speaker 9 (56:41):
Yeah, no, my apologies.

Speaker 1 (56:42):
Oh, Eddie McGuire's going to be there. Your own brother.

Speaker 5 (56:44):
You'll be on Media Watch next week.

Speaker 3 (56:46):
Oh, no.

Speaker 9 (56:46):
Oh, shut up.

Speaker 1 (56:47):
You'll be on Police Watch. All right, we're back tomorrow.
Take care.

Speaker 6 (56:50):
Bye-bye.

Speaker 3 (56:51):
