transformation to bring it back to its former glory and
save it for good. This is everything that went down
in Week one of our three week Ultimate Pub Reno.
Over the last couple of weeks, this show has been

on a mission to save your pubs. Last week, thanks
to the hundreds of you, we gave five pubs five
thousand dollars each another. Another big pub gets helped, and
this time it's for us. So announced which one pub
we're going to give the Ultimate Pub Renno too. I
mean over quarter of a million dollars to totally transform

a pub. Now, Rhio and I went there last week.
We went on a secret mission. We flew up to
Brisbane and we drove for an hour and a half too.
An amazing pub, a pub that really does need some help,
but a pub that isn't just a pub. When we
first started talking about this, these places aren't just buildings
there are there really are there's something special. They are
the front rooms of a community, and this pub was

that it looked really still majestic from the outside.

The bones of it are great, but it really needs
some help.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
But the stars of this pub are the two people,
Tracing and Gary, that brought it two years ago to
be a home and then realize we can't shut this
pub down. The community will lose so much. So get this.
For the last two years they've been running this pub.
They've never run a pub before. They've become reluctant pub owners.

Basically they're working in it seven days a week.

But Rih and I just fell in love with them
last week and the story and the pub there, which
is why we're really really excited to announce that the
pub getting the ultimate reno is the Criterion Hotel in
heledon up in Queensland. And on the line now is Tracy?

Tracy tell everyone listening? Then you know, I was just
saying about how you know your and your husband quite
a unique.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Story with this pub.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Actually is that you brought this place really to turn
it into a family home.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
Exactly. Yes, we were winding down Gary head eye issues
and I'd been diagnosed with their mess, so it was
to wind down a little bit. And there is no
other hotel in Helendon, so we couldn't shut it down.
It was the hub of the town, so it stayed
open and we kept working.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Which is why we're choosing your pub to give the
ultimate reno too. It really deserves it. And we've only
got like sixteen days. So here's the plan, sixteen days
to transform your pub.

Wow, Wow, this is just it's all overwhelming. It's just
so much, it's unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
So what do you think really needs to happen in
the sixteen days we're up against the time.

What is it? Painting the carpets in the dining room?

Definitely, the bar will do something but that you know, painted,
and give it a bit of a facialist the dining
room and maybe a little bit of paint. We'll throw
it at the coffee shop as well.

And also I thought, you know the pub garden.

You've got that great area there as a pub garden,
but it's kind of empty to it needs something in.

The pub garden need some love.

the listeners about what we could do with the pub
garden and also the painters will be arriving to start
works straight away.

band where there's new music on the big old eighty
inch TV for sports. They do have an area and

little pocket of blues memorabilia.

And talking about this thing we've been doing over the
last couple of weeks. We've been on a mission called
Save our pub when I found out that in the
last two decades, the last twenty years, sixty percent, sixty
percent of Australian pubs have gone and they're not coming
back because we all know why we're staying at home.

We've built a lives for convenience and we're not just
getting in front of each other as much as we
used to, and so that means these places where we
gather are falling by the wayside. So we want to
do something about that, and we asked you to tell
us about your local pub that needs saving fighting. Last
week we gave five of those pubs five thousand dollars each,
and we announced yesterday that one pub that Rio and

I went on a secret road trip last week all
the way up to Brisbane, then drove an hour and
a half out to place called Heldon where we saw
the Joy and Majesty that is the Criterion Hotel, an
amazing pub there, and we've decided this pub needs a makeover.
We've only got two and a half weeks, and we're

talking a proper makeover.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Okay, not just a liquor pant, although that is needed everywhere.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
At least a quarter of a million dollars is going
to put it into runovate in this place because it
deserves it. We met the two people have got a
great story, Tracy and Gary. They are sixty and sixty two.
This was not part of their life plan figured out.
We brought zoo, we brought a pub. They brought this
place online. It apt to be a home. They've got
grand kits. They were just part of the sort of
wind their life back and moved there. And then when

they moved in there and they saw what it meant
to the area, they were like, there's no way we
can close this place. Gary told me last week we're not.
They're meeting Gary and Tracy that an old eighty five
year old woman had run it. She told them by herself.
They thought, well, how hard can it be. Then they
found out she had a lot of help from locals.
They're also helping themselves of some of that beer in

lieu of wages. So and then two weeks after getting this,
decided that they would keep it open for a while
and run it themselves. They've never run pubs before. Tracy
gets a diagnosis for MS. But honestly, go online look
at the videos you might have heard of yesterday. This
woman is a legend and a champion. There's sort of
defiant spirit. We had the best afternoon up there with

them last week.

It was so much fun.

Yeah, this is why we want to pick them and
the pub as well the area. And then two weeks
Friday we're going to be heading up there and we're
going to be doing the whole show live up there
for the grand reopening. So we announced this just yesterday.
We said this is the pub, and then we need
some help. And in the last well not even twenty
four hours have it listened to these messages like Richard

Good day, Christian Richard's and Early Portables. Mate, how are
you just had a walk through the Criterion down at Helendon. Yeah,
it's a fabit of work down there to do, mate,
to get it back up to looking all nice, shy,
probably a quarter of a million bucks worth, but we're
happy to come to the party for at least close
to maybe half of that. With our trades, we'll throw
in a bit of labor, some parts. We'll probably get

some materials in at cost price if we can, and
see if I can twist my painters to get you
some cheaper paint. Really really really looking forward to get
into this. We're excited, the guys are excited. We'll be
down their boots and all mate to give you a
hand to get this across the line. Looking forward to
having a beer with you as soon as you get
in there.

the community, and so he does the brilliant airbrushing and signage.

that's exactly who they are. They brought this place for
home then anyone else. We can't shut it down. There's

just incredible. So it's such a lovely story.

and that we're going to be helping out. But I

twenty four hours, and obviously this came out of nowhere yesterday.

Tuesday this week which pub in Australia thanks to your
nominations of getting the ultimate pub renovation. It's an amazing path.

The pub that we are saving and are renovating actually
right now is in Queensland where there's a team of builders, painters,
Sparky's working around the clock because they've got only another.

We're going to be heading up there and then on
the Friday we're doing the grand Rey owning. I've never
heard of a renovation within two and a half weeks.

Especially for a huge part while we.

I think those trades are as well.

I say it's the Criterion Hotel heldon Queensland last week.
RHEO and I went up the secret road trip to
go and see it and more importantly to meet the
accidental publicans. That's that is the most honest included word
I could describe what's happened to. Tracy and Gary sixty
and sixty two found this pub that was up for
sale online, thought they were by and then turn it
(16:32):
into a kind of winding down retirement home where they
could have grandkids there because it's a pub, it's a
big plot there and a really beautiful part of Queensland
as well. Then when they moved in, they just didn't
have the heart to close this pub when they saw
what these pubs mean to communities, and it is in
the middle of nowhere.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Yeah, when you go there, you really under it's a.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
Long road for an hour and a half of farmland,
not a lot.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
Then there's a small cop shop, a spa and hah
like shimmering on the horizon like a mirage.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
A pub literally literally was that rio.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
And I saw a farm farm, farm farm for an
hour and a half along a straight road out Brisbane,
and then suddenly I went, oh, that's the pub and
it wasn't really always like, how can you tell me
it's the only pub here?
Speaker 5 (17:15):
And you think maybe it's like a mirage an oasis,
and it's beautiful.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
It's a beautiful old.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Pub as well, but it does need some TLC. And
obviously they haven't got They've been running this pub now
for the last two years. And also Tracy, who is
a legend, she's incredible. Less two weeks after they moved in,
she got diagnosis. She's got MS. This woman is incredible.
She's still working seven days a week. She's been serving
coffees for whoever drops by since five am this morning.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
That's her. That's her seven days a week.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
But they are running themselves ragged at the moment, and
they haven't got the time, they haven't got the money
for a renovation to really give this pub the renovation
and protection it deserves. It's a beautiful pub. The bare
bones of it are striking. Yeah, you look at it
on the outside light. You don't see enough of these
pubs anymore. It's that classic kind of Queensland the pub.
You go inside, it's got all there, the dining room
(18:06):
that you would have gone to and when you were
with mum and dad over the years and stuff like that.
It's quite nostalgic. Taking a walk. It was like a
working museum. I thought it was.
Speaker 5 (18:13):
Yeah, And they've got these beautiful photos of like really
old timey photos of the pub from you know, eighty
years ago, and they want to restore it back. It's
sort of fallen away in all that time and they
want to restore it back to that glory days. And
if they do it, it'll be one of the most
beautiful pubs in Australia.

So we're looking for your ideas and thank you very much.

Everyone has been offering to how one of them, who
is literally him and his teammates are giving up a
lot of their time and.

back down to the pub after the boys have been
out here for a few days having a quick squizes
where we're at. Guys have done the majority of the
exterior probably God put about a palet and a half
of paint into that.

I've been into the barrier, replaced everything obviously gives some
new lights. We're pretty well ride in the barrier. He
were not too far off, I reckon. We've only got
about two days after to go in here.

The dining room guys, I've just started in there today,
so they've already ripped off all of the paneling. Once
that's done, and we'll have all the painting ready to
go tomorrow. By Friday, we'll be looking very good at
getting the interior of the bar and the dining room done,
I think, and then we'll be moving outside all right, mate,
I've talked to you in a couple of days.

He is a dream trade. They can get a wiggle on.

There's no mention of smoke cos they work harder in Queens.
Look something the ones that I've had in Victoria. It
would take them a year to even done what they've
done in the last three days. Smokeoas I finished. It's quarter

You know, we just want to get going for the
school run mate.

You know back tomorrow it's twenty six degrees.

Oh crack so genuinely, because you know what the pub
gon is mainly for kids, isn't it right?

This is a family pub, okay, and so if the
kids are happy, mom and dad are left to learn
from bit.

Of quality time drinking and chilling in.

Them a dinosaur. Kids are going to be fascinated by that.
I'm worried about their history up there in Queensland. Well,
they fear dinosaurs, so they understand dinosaurs. So actually it's
an educational thing.

When you're up there, you've got two degrees, you can
do some ted talks by the dinosaur while we're up
doing a live show in two weeks time. There's also
a velociraptor up for grabs. Also in Queensland. Why is
there so many prehistoric animals forself in Queensland? And then
there's also the classic and they are very rare these days.
The giant wooden fork and spoon. You don't see them anymore.

ultimate pub reno for. Barry's one of the very very
hard working tradees that have got the most ridiculous deadline
that we've given them to renovate this pub in Heldon,
about an hour and a half outside Brisbane up there
in Queensland. We're going to be live up there in

and we're giving it a quarter of a million dollar
transformation to bring it back to its former glory and
save it for good. This is everything that went down
in Week one of our three week Ultimate Pub Reno.
Over the last couple of weeks, this show has been

on a mission to save your pubs. Last week, thanks
to the hundreds of you, we gave five pubs five
thousand dollars each another. Another big pub gets helped, and
this time it's for us. So announced which one pub
we're going to give the Ultimate Pub Renno too. I
mean over quarter of a million dollars to totally transform

a pub. Now, Rhio and I went there last week.
We went on a secret mission. We flew up to
Brisbane and we drove for an hour and a half too.
An amazing pub, a pub that really does need some help,
but a pub that isn't just a pub. When we
first started talking about this, these places aren't just buildings
there are there really are there's something special. They are
the front rooms of a community, and this pub was

that it looked really still majestic from the outside.

The bones of it are great, but it really needs
some help.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
But the stars of this pub are the two people,
Tracing and Gary, that brought it two years ago to
be a home and then realize we can't shut this
pub down. The community will lose so much. So get this.
For the last two years they've been running this pub.
They've never run a pub before. They've become reluctant pub owners.

Basically they're working in it seven days a week.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
But Rih and I just fell in love with them
last week and the story and the pub there, which
is why we're really really excited to announce that the
pub getting the ultimate reno is the Criterion Hotel in
heledon up in Queensland. And on the line now is Tracy?

Tracy tell everyone listening? Then you know, I was just
saying about how you know your and your husband quite
a unique.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Story with this pub.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Actually is that you brought this place really to turn
it into a family home.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
Exactly. Yes, we were winding down Gary head eye issues
and I'd been diagnosed with their mess, so it was
to wind down a little bit. And there is no
other hotel in Helendon, so we couldn't shut it down.
It was the hub of the town, so it stayed
open and we kept working.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Which is why we're choosing your pub to give the
ultimate reno too. It really deserves it. And we've only
got like sixteen days. So here's the plan, sixteen days
to transform your pub.

Wow, Wow, this is just it's all overwhelming. It's just
so much, it's unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
So what do you think really needs to happen in
the sixteen days we're up against the time.

What is it? Painting the carpets in the dining room?
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Definitely, the bar will do something but that you know, painted,
and give it a bit of a facialist the dining
room and maybe a little bit of paint. We'll throw
it at the coffee shop as well.

And also I thought, you know the pub garden.

You've got that great area there as a pub garden,
but it's kind of empty to it needs something in.

The pub garden need some love.

So I thought today we could ask for ideas and
the listeners about what we could do with the pub
garden and also the painters will be arriving to start
works straight away.

band where there's new music on the big old eighty

little pocket of blues memorabilia.

And talking about this thing we've been doing over the
last couple of weeks. We've been on a mission called
Save our pub when I found out that in the
last two decades, the last twenty years, sixty percent, sixty
percent of Australian pubs have gone and they're not coming
back because we all know why we're staying at home.

We've built a lives for convenience and we're not just
getting in front of each other as much as we
used to, and so that means these places where we
gather are falling by the wayside. So we want to
do something about that, and we asked you to tell
us about your local pub that needs saving fighting. Last
week we gave five of those pubs five thousand dollars each,
and we announced yesterday that one pub that Rio and

I went on a secret road trip last week all
the way up to Brisbane, then drove an hour and
a half out to place called Heldon where we saw
the Joy and Majesty that is the Criterion Hotel, an
amazing pub there, and we've decided this pub needs a makeover.
We've only got two and a half weeks, and we're

talking a proper makeover.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Okay, not just a liquor pant, although that is needed everywhere.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
At least a quarter of a million dollars is going
to put it into runovate in this place because it
deserves it. We met the two people have got a
great story, Tracy and Gary. They are sixty and sixty two.
This was not part of their life plan figured out.
We brought zoo, we brought a pub. They brought this
place online. It apt to be a home. They've got
grand kits. They were just part of the sort of
wind their life back and moved there. And then when
(08:44):
they moved in there and they saw what it meant
to the area, they were like, there's no way we
can close this place. Gary told me last week we're not.
They're meeting Gary and Tracy that an old eighty five
year old woman had run it. She told them by herself.
They thought, well, how hard can it be. Then they
found out she had a lot of help from locals.
They're also helping themselves of some of that beer in

lieu of wages. So and then two weeks after getting this,
decided that they would keep it open for a while
and run it themselves. They've never run pubs before. Tracy
gets a diagnosis for MS. But honestly, go online look
at the videos you might have heard of yesterday. This
woman is a legend and a champion. There's sort of
defiant spirit. We had the best afternoon up there with

them last week.

It was so much fun.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Yeah, this is why we want to pick them and
the pub as well the area. And then two weeks
Friday we're going to be heading up there and we're
going to be doing the whole show live up there
for the grand reopening. So we announced this just yesterday.
We said this is the pub, and then we need
some help. And in the last well not even twenty
four hours have it listened to these messages like Richard

you just had a walk through the Criterion down at Helendon. Yeah,
it's a fabit of work down there to do, mate,
to get it back up to looking all nice, shy,
probably a quarter of a million bucks worth, but we're
happy to come to the party for at least close
to maybe half of that. With our trades, we'll throw
in a bit of labor, some parts. We'll probably get

some materials in at cost price if we can, and
see if I can twist my painters to get you
some cheaper paint. Really really really looking forward to get
into this. We're excited, the guys are excited. We'll be
down their boots and all mate to give you a
hand to get this across the line. Looking forward to

The pub that we are saving and are renovating actually
right now is in Queensland where there's a team of builders, painters,
Sparky's working around the clock because they've got only another.

We're going to be heading up there and then on
the Friday we're doing the grand Rey owning. I've never
heard of a renovation within two and a half weeks.

I think those trades are as well.

I say it's the Criterion Hotel heldon Queensland last week.
RHEO and I went up the secret road trip to
go and see it and more importantly to meet the
accidental publicans. That's that is the most honest included word
I could describe what's happened to. Tracy and Gary sixty
and sixty two found this pub that was up for
sale online, thought they were by and then turn it
(16:32):
into a kind of winding down retirement home where they
could have grandkids there because it's a pub, it's a
big plot there and a really beautiful part of Queensland
as well. Then when they moved in, they just didn't
have the heart to close this pub when they saw
what these pubs mean to communities, and it is in
the middle of nowhere.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Yeah, when you go there, you really under it's a.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
Long road for an hour and a half of farmland,
not a lot.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
Then there's a small cop shop, a spa and hah
like shimmering on the horizon like a mirage.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
A pub literally literally was that rio.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
And I saw a farm farm, farm farm for an
hour and a half along a straight road out Brisbane,
and then suddenly I went, oh, that's the pub and
it wasn't really always like, how can you tell me
it's the only pub here?
Speaker 5 (17:15):
And you think maybe it's like a mirage an oasis,
and it's beautiful.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
It's a beautiful old.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Pub as well, but it does need some TLC. And
obviously they haven't got They've been running this pub now
for the last two years. And also Tracy, who is
a legend, she's incredible. Less two weeks after they moved in,
she got diagnosis. She's got MS. This woman is incredible.
She's still working seven days a week. She's been serving
coffees for whoever drops by since five am this morning.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
That's her. That's her seven days a week.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
But they are running themselves ragged at the moment, and
they haven't got the time, they haven't got the money
for a renovation to really give this pub the renovation
and protection it deserves. It's a beautiful pub. The bare
bones of it are striking. Yeah, you look at it
on the outside light. You don't see enough of these
pubs anymore. It's that classic kind of Queensland the pub.
You go inside, it's got all there, the dining room
(18:06):
that you would have gone to and when you were
with mum and dad over the years and stuff like that.
It's quite nostalgic. Taking a walk. It was like a
working museum. I thought it was.
Speaker 5 (18:13):
Yeah, And they've got these beautiful photos of like really
old timey photos of the pub from you know, eighty
years ago, and they want to restore it back. It's
sort of fallen away in all that time and they
want to restore it back to that glory days. And
if they do it, it'll be one of the most
beautiful pubs in Australia.

back down to the pub after the boys have been
out here for a few days having a quick squizes
where we're at. Guys have done the majority of the
exterior probably God put about a palet and a half
of paint into that.

I've been into the barrier, replaced everything obviously gives some
new lights. We're pretty well ride in the barrier. He
were not too far off, I reckon. We've only got
about two days after to go in here.

The dining room guys, I've just started in there today,
so they've already ripped off all of the paneling. Once
that's done, and we'll have all the painting ready to
go tomorrow. By Friday, we'll be looking very good at
getting the interior of the bar and the dining room done,
I think, and then we'll be moving outside all right, mate,
I've talked to you in a couple of days.

He is a dream trade. They can get a wiggle on.

There's no mention of smoke cos they work harder in Queens.
Look something the ones that I've had in Victoria. It
would take them a year to even done what they've

gon is mainly for kids, isn't it right?

This is a family pub, okay, and so if the
kids are happy, mom and dad are left to learn
from bit.

Of quality time drinking and chilling in.

Them a dinosaur. Kids are going to be fascinated by that.
I'm worried about their history up there in Queensland. Well,
they fear dinosaurs, so they understand dinosaurs. So actually it's
an educational thing.

When you're up there, you've got two degrees, you can
do some ted talks by the dinosaur while we're up
doing a live show in two weeks time. There's also
a velociraptor up for grabs. Also in Queensland. Why is
there so many prehistoric animals forself in Queensland? And then
there's also the classic and they are very rare these days.
The giant wooden fork and spoon. You don't see them anymore.

the Criterion, this is our pub that we're given the
ultimate pub reno for. Barry's one of the very very
hard working tradees that have got the most ridiculous deadline
that we've given them to renovate this pub in Heldon,
about an hour and a half outside Brisbane up there
in Queensland. We're going to be live up there in

two weeks time. Barry, Hello, Barry, you sound like someone
who's been a run ragged this week, been pushed around
by the foreman Richard and probably from our show Karen
as well. Thank you very much for you and your
team's hard work.

How's it going, No, May, it's been pretty good. It's
a challenge, but more excited that way.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
It's a beautiful pub, isn't it.
Speaker 11 (22:53):
Oh, it's going to be a beautiful pub. Yeah, it's beautiful.
But we are going to make this look so good.

I've seen the photos. You do an incredible work up there.
It's almost unrecognizable. We're up there last week, Ru and
I and the photos of what you guys already done
with the repainting. It looks fantastic. Dick and Aunt, Gary
and Tracy legends.

They're totally they are so good. Yeah, a little bit
hard on me on trying to do this, but yeah,
it's like they're good at what they're doing.
Speaker 3 (23:24):
Barry. You're not just painting it all myself. You're part
of a team, aren't you.

I am tirely part of the team, mate. I've got
a great team. But yeah, we try to work together.
I sort of try and teach them what to do
with what. But yeah, we're happy for Moly.
