Speaker 1 (00:01):
Here we go.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
All right, everybody, My next guest's plural. Two boys in
the studio. You might recognize their Ladies hit Miley. We've
been playing that on the show. It's actually not their
latest I've got new stuff as well, but Miley's the
song we've been playing and we've been loving it. And
we kind of played it the first time. I'm like, oh,
who are culture Wars? And then I realized they've got
a connection to Australia and they're in Australia. Opening for
Amy Shark, Welcome to the show, Alex and Caleb Hell
(00:33):
her boys. Oh now Miley, as the first thought is Miley.
Who's Miley? Is it the Miley we know? Is it
a different Miley.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
It's kind of related to the Miley you know.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
There's a quick background on it is like we wrote
it at the start of the pandemic and everybody we
got to stop talk about the pandemic of this something.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Yeah, I know.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Anyways, that's when we wrote it. We were in a house.
The drummer Dave made like a track and he called
it Miley Virus Corona Cyrus and I it just so
happened that the drums on that are the drums that
are in the record. These drums are sick. I'm gonna
take everything else out and we're going to also keep
the name.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
That's good Miley Virus Corona Cyrus, Corona Cyrus. That is
so stupid, so stupid really so wait, so the song
really has nothing to do with a woman named Miley
or Miley Cyrus.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
It was like I wrote all the lyrics and then
I was like, yeah, I don't have a better title,
Like yeah, all right, Miley Miley.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
That's so funny. I love that so much. And then Alex,
your connection to Australia is that you married an aussy.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Yeah, yeah, we just got married.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
Yeah, congratulations win well legally March, but actually June.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Oh, one of those people just got married. It's like, oh,
it's just my birthday and it was in January. How
long can we say?
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Just well, in fairness, the last three months I've been
on tour.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
And I'm teasing very ausy, which I'm sure you know,
just take the piss. Of course, your you met your
party here in Australia.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
What's the story?
Speaker 4 (01:56):
We met in la at the Chateau Marma actually, which
is we ended up getting married and he was with me.
We were having like a boozy lunch that's just very long,
very long. Well, if he wasn't an hour and a
half late, I wouldn't I wouldn't have met her because
thank you. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Yeah, it's I like when our bad behaviors reinforced.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Yeah, but now we met like the day before the
city shut down for the pandemic, and then we like
dated on FaceTime for like a couple of months, and
then I got exemption to be here and so I
lived here with her for about a year and then
moved back to LA and you know, kept going and
then we just got married.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Miley Cyrus Coronavirus Cyrus is bond. So uh like your
group right, your banned? How long have you been making music?
What's the lowdown where you from? Give us the give
us everything I want to know.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah, from Austin, Texas and this banned. You know everybody
in Texas and in Austin, like everybody's got bands at
different times, but this band has been like since twenty fifteen.
The album we've really been working on since twenty nineteen,
twenty twenty ish twenty. Yeah, we wrote it, and rewrote
(03:04):
it and you know we do everything ourselves and so yeah,
so that was you know how we all kind of
came together and we friends of a friends and like
kind of jamming in the.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Room, that kind of thing.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
And then you're like, oh, actually we know somebody else
that we like better, and you slap somebody out.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
And there's been a lot of iterations.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Culture was so there's five currently five of you. What
was the peak number? How many did you have it? Most?
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Oh, this is the peak?
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Is your room to you've got room to ship?
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Yeah, we're going to lose a couple of members of.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Actually actually before the end of the interview, and we've
just got an update.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
It's for uh, I need a drummer if anybody at.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
The stock Exchange, you just need to. Like, the numbers
can fluctuate.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Drummers are down simons, you know when.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Like they're they're like four days since nuclear accident. So okay,
so that's interesting. The culture in Austin, is it that
that everyone has a band, everyone's in a band. It's
a musical city, of course.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Yeah, I mean at.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
The time, you know, I think right now, you know,
as I say, yeah, it's changed a lot. I think
live music capital of the World is like a sweet
banner that the city put up at the airport.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
But it's not real.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
I mean all the venues we used to play at
are gone and are now like apartment buildings or the
Google Building or charming.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Yeah, so it's it's a natural thing. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
So if you're like a strolling musician, you know the
cost of living, you're just yeah, right, yeah, right, good Facebook, Yeah,
and yeah that is that's.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
A creative hut, A great album totally.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
I moved to New York to study acting when I
was nineteen, and I signed up to this acting school
and it was all legit and very exciting, and I
was like walking through, like Chelsea for the first time.
I'm like, oh my god, I'm going to see my
acting school. This little ossy, chubby kid that's so excited.
And it was in the Google Building and I was
like fully expecting like you know, like red brick, like
old chorustic, you know, like a like a ballet beam
(04:48):
in the middle of the studio mirrors. I'm like, oh yeah,
and no, someon always had like a macho latte. All
these people were like name tags and like lessons and
classes just ruined the whole vision for me. Not fun.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
That's great.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Remember in Austin, one of the venues we used to
play at they built like a brand new hotel next door,
and then the hotel started lobbying with the city to
get them to stop playing music at ten pm.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Yeah, that's that's what's going on live musical.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Still, you're making great music. I want to play Miley
then when we come back, I want to hear more
about your stuff with Amy Shock, because yeah, okay, back
with Alex and Kyler from Culture was after this, It's
Miley on an I show at Kiss. We're back Alex
and Kyler from Culture was great record, isn't that That's
some music.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
I like the timing of it.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
It's very Yeah, you know what. I liked the sound
of it.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Like good sound.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yeah, the title is great boys here all the way
from the US. You're opening for Amy Shock at the moment.
How's that? How's how's shaka? Fans are great?
Speaker 3 (05:48):
It's been good. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
They We just did Melbourne and they stuck it out
in the rain for hours.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
It was I was like Melo for you. Wow.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
Yeah it's cold and rainy and they all stuck it
out man.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
And then you're doing Kudos Bank in Sydney on Friday night.
I see see you're doing ice Ce Oh I see see,
Oh my god, I see see.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
One.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
It's a good venue. Yeah, it's very sloped. It's a
big venue.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
It is good.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
How how's it like working with Amy? How did you
connect to her? Who connected you as a label?
Speaker 4 (06:17):
I think it's like a like an Australian Australian team
kind of thing. Yeah, and obviously, like given my wife,
I'm like as many times as we can come to Australia,
the better, Yeah, any excuse, and so like we're doing
Brisbane and like you know, my in laws will come
and that kind of thing.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
And ye out yeah, well.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
We're on Aaron Brisbane, We're around Australia. To the shout
out to the in laws.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Get some brownie pots. Well hopefully hopefully detrained me share this.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Night show listeners. If they're listening thirteen one, I think
so I have call us now, that'd be cool they call.
My dad will call this show randomly. He listens driving
home from work at night and it's just he's just
just such a oh he always wants life advice. What
does he call for grace. He calls for some bizarre things.
We were talking about something to do with sex, and
he was calling up to tell you about the last
(07:04):
time he had sex with your mom. Yeah, and it
was awful.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
It was awful. We didn't put him to air.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah, I know, thank you, right, but I can't take
my own dad to HR at my own workplace. It's
it's stressful totally.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
So what is next for you guys?
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Mentioned album? I mean, is it?
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Yeah? We're so Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
This is the end of touring since August for us
right now, but we're gonna rev it back up and
the album will come, you know, top of the year.
We've got we've got some big stuff we can't talk
about yet, like more tours were coming up.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
We're absolutely coming back.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
If you give me a hundred dollars, i'll talk about it.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
I'm strapped for cash at the moment. I'll give you
there's an economic crisis in Australia. I can give you
one hundred, but then that's like US dollars, that's like
seventy bucks. It's a deal for years.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
We need to work on that contract.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Yeah, I want to work that. We'll so talk to
me about your manager, because your management are the same
people that do Fleetwood Mac. Right, that's cool, Yeah, that's
they're like, you know, they know what they're doing then clearly.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Oh yeah, yeah, they're theah, they're all over it, and
you know they've been giving us some really great opportunities
and stepping up, and we just hope that we can
like step up for them and prove to them that
we're worth giving a shot. So that's really you know,
all we ever wants a shot and we don't do well,
then that's on us.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
I was reading. Yeah, sorry, Nougget.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
I feel like it, especially with them, with the management,
Like especially what we did just did with Laney in
Asia is like very much a proof of concept, especially
for us because we played venue sizes that we had
never played before, and it's like, you know, how is
the band going to react if you've never done it?
And we get there and we felt confident.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Fifty five thousand Manila, I mean, oh wow.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Just like and you just you like slaughter right in.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
Oh yeah it felt better. Honestly, really, the bigger it gets,
the easier it is.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Must have been affirming for you guys.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Yeah, yes, it felt good. We were like this was
supposed to be.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
How old are you guys, what's the age of the
thirty seven people in this band? How many thirty.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
I'm thirty one, Okay, I'm thirty two.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Yeah right, you guys well seasoned. You know, you know
what you're doing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, But then imposter syndrome,
You're going to get comfortable and then it's going to
kick you in the ass.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
Yeah can't.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Well, we just keep reminding ourselves, like you know, people
get babysitters and buy tickets and spend good money. And
just because it's our eighth teen million show in a
row doesn't mean that we can you know, screw around
or anything like that.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
It's very important.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
That's like us every night. We take it so seriously
every night. How many shows have we done? Six hundred
and we want to say six six thirty nine shows?
And we take it seriously every night. As you can
tell by being in this room with me, I'm extremely serious.
Dad calls in and my dad calls in, and that's
takes it serious. He takes it so seriously. And that's
broadcast radio. At the end of the day. It's serious.
(09:35):
It's you know, journalism. That's what I do. Now apparently
Stephen kicks vocal coach Alex. I mean, come on, I
said some great things about you.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
I was reading information.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
I'm a journalist, Like I just said, I can research.
I've got Google.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
I'll tell him tomorrow. You said that, what is it? So?
Speaker 2 (09:51):
So the vocal coach that works with Steven Nicks works with.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
You, Well, he is touring with her constantly. So and
bless his heart, he he woke up after SNL He
like woke up at five in the morning to do
vocal warrants for me.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
In the Philippines. Wow, like on the same day.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
And I'm always just like sorry, He's like, this is
what I do, don't worry about it. Yeah, he's great
and he's really helped me, especially like with just sustainability
and blow my voice out and stuff.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
If he had a testy pop in that moment. Today
people say, my voice is smooth as butter. Caleb, what
about you? Who sings your praises? Come on to drop
from you?
Speaker 1 (10:31):
My mom loves me. What's governor? What is it? My
mom says that I'm the best, and I write that down.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Caleb's mom says the best. Did you just call Caleb's
mom the Governor. Yeah, why, it's a running joke. It's
just a run.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
I just call her the governor because she's in charge.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Okay, that's Miley virus covid. Yes, Cyrus, I had to
be their moment. Well, it's a pleasure meeting you boys.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Yeah, I appreciate it. I really enjoyed that.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
I'm loving the I'm loving Miley and then it hurts
us out now as well. New music from Culture Wars.
You can see them opening for Amy Shark this Friday
at the ic C. Boys, great to have you on
the show.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Thank you appreciate it.
