This week we find ourselves right in the middle of the matchup between sport and pop culture.

From Kim Kardashian’s grid-side appearance in Monaco to the ongoing debate around celebrities, influencers and who “deserves” to be at major sporting events, it's all creating a lot of debate around who should get to be pitch, track, or court side.

There’s also a look at the economics of fandom (and why not everyone’s thrilled about courtside seats going to famous plus-ones), plus a very rogue but excellent Timothée Chalamet origin story. And then, a moment that cuts through all of it - a Big Freeze story that reminds you what sport can look like at its best, featuring a jaw-dropping act of generosity that has to be heard to be believed.

Harvey Norman love sport. Supporting Australian athletes at all levels, from grassroots to the world stage for over thirty years. SHOP Furniture, Bedding, TVs, Fridges, Vacuums, Laptops, Mobiles and more instore or online!

Speaker 1 (00:00):
The celebrity intersect with sport. At the moment is at
fever Pitch the NHL.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
The actual NHL is flying G Flip our g Flip
to the Stanley Cup because their song blew up on
off campus. I remember when there's used to be a
sport account. Hey, guess what it can be.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Both completely understand that I've just contradicted what I said
about being like, leave keep alone.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Why is Kylie there?

Speaker 2 (00:24):
We should get shallow mayon gel me, jel me, jell me.
It's our favorite time of the week. It is time
for two good sports sports. He's told differently as per
I'm Georgie Tunny.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
I am so excited about this because I may or
may not have been on air on the weekend, and
Georgie has messaged.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
Me, going tell me you're going live with Kimney k
at the f one and I'm like, no, George, No,
We're actually we're actually gonna lead with the fact that
the stars and the renegades are disappearing.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
I know that this is of similar.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Interest to the Australian sporting landscape and it has been.
It's one for us this week in terms of the
collision of celebrity and sport, and we are in the
middle of the crash, and that's going to be our
main chat today. But good sport of bad sport, George,
you want to start.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
And can I just say, I stand by that feedback
for you, Okay, I stand by that feedback for you.
I stand by that feedback for the ABC. I stand
back by that feedback for every national program that you know,
what's of interest this chat that we have coming up,
Kimmy kay doing the pit walk in Monaco anyway, we're
tabling that for a hot second, because we do need
good sport badsport, and I have arguably it could be both.

(01:34):
It really could be both, Jimmy, I'm going to say
it's a bad sport, but it's a good sport because
my god, it makes me happy. Ah. And I just
as someone who is a struggling, struggling Rugby league fan
at the moment, at the minute with their team, I
say this with love and respect, but the West Tigers,

(01:55):
somewhere along the line, guys, we need to actually consider
what the football gods are doing to you.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Now I want to take us back. We're going on
a journey, Jelmy, because a few rounds ago. It really
wasn't that long ago. They were that they were winning.
We were watching them win. We were thinking, my god,
that Benji Marshall in it, coach. He is actually a
magician off the field as he was when he was
running things on it. Hold on, he is a genius.

(02:24):
Since then, since then, it's not gone great for the
West Tigers. And if we continue back to it kind
of started when they had a terrible, terrible result against
the Cronala Sharks and they were absolutely thumped. Now one
of their gorgeous fans and I hit We all get it, okay,
when a football team loses it, it hits us personally, Okay,
with some of us take it really really hard. And

(02:46):
Noah da Guara was the most gorgeous five year old
you've ever seen, who went viral after that loss to
the Sharks because he was crying and because my tiger's lost.
Do you remember, Yeah, Noah, beautiful Noah. So he went
viral and the time reached out, We're just like, this
is the passion that we want to see. Noah, don't worry.
We are going to get you. We are going to
get you to a game. The players adore you.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
All of this X y Z.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
The game tell me that the West Tigers brought this
beautiful five year old too. Was the sixty eight mill
thumping at the hands of the pen with Panthers and
Nathan Cleary. Now there are just some things that football
gys have a sense of hum.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Because please alone leave the job. And my favorite thing
that I actually said to you from that is the
postmatch interview with Nathan Cleary where it was like, oh,
we always knew it was going to be a hard
fought win.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Without it was with.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Sixty four nil, Nathan, were you thinking, Jesus, it's in
the balance.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Oh, has anyone checked on the child? How's Noah?

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Is he building an arc?

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Is he does? He want to set sail and never
never see any football ever again?

Speaker 2 (04:00):
The flood's coming with all Tigers fans tears, and he's
out there with let's do it. Let's do it. I
mean I just Knowah, I just adore you and adore
your family and West Tigers whoever whoever was like looking
at the thought it's Planther's game is going to be
good for him.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Wasn't the turning point when Lui was like, actually, guys,
I'm going to go. Yeah, but there's been a real
swing of momentum since the main man's been like, actually,
do you know what sounds good?

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Monaco and Monaco I mean P and g.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Off to P and G I go and yes, actually, Gelmy,
you're so right. That is that is kind of when
the whole momentum shifted for Tigers. I know there's been
some injuries. I know there were suspensions. I know, la
la la, la la la. But just the fact that
you think that you can repair a broken a broken
heart of a five year old by giving him the
gift of a sixty eight to mil something at the Panthers.

(04:56):
I mean, this is you need resilience these days, guys,
I guess and you know, well no I has learned early.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
If that breaks your heart, my good sport is going
to warm it.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Here you go.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
So I had the great joy on Monday for being
at the mg MCG wow for the Big Freeze, right,
And sometimes there's jobs that you get to MC and
they're particularly special and I love hosting that function every year.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
It's a really lovely one.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
And obviously this year was a different one in that
Neil wasn't there. At the top of the slide with
Beck to push the sliders down, but we played on
and the generosity in the room. I was there as
a particular couple in Quentin and kylie Bert, who are

(05:44):
from Queensland, had no connection to Neil Danaher, had no
connection to M and D and it was their first
time attending an AFL match at the g had already
pledged ten million dollars that they were going to donate
personally to fight. M and D arrived and saw the

(06:06):
sea of blue beanies and said to Matt Tilley, mate,
we're going to add thirty and he's gone, oh my god,
thirty million dollars. That's unbelievable. And he said, no, no,
you didn't hear me. I'm going to add thirty. Thirty
plus ten is forty. We're going to give forty million dollars.
So to that point, fightermin D has raised one hundred

(06:28):
and twenty million, which is unbelievable, believable, but one couple
just went bang because they wanted to be part of it,
and it was It was incredible to watch. It was
announced by Matt that this was the generosity that they
had shown, and the way that they looked down and
almost shifted uncomfortably in their seats because they didn't want

(06:51):
the attention that came with it all. They I think
they were almost slightly embarrassed about the announcement of it,
but also proud to have given and done. And the
message was, if you look around the world at the moment,
there's so much that's trying to divide. Neil was just
trying to bring everyone together for a common good and
he's achieved that, and we want to support that.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
And this is a legacy piece.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
If there is ever a better good sport, then we're
going to give forty forty million dollars.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Yeah, no, no, that's it's unbelievable. It's unbelievable, and it
is testament to Beck's hard work. It's testament to Neil's legacy.
Oh my godment to that entire, entire event. And hey, it,
while the beast is still a thing, this awful, awful disease,
it is also true that we are closer than ever

(07:42):
to finding a cure for it, and these kind of
donations will make all of the difference. I got to
give Beck a cuddle and say that we obviously missed her.
She is, honestly and so much is said about Neil,
and understandably so, because the man's a warrior.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
She's a superhero. She's a superhero.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
And I said to her, I said, how are you said,
I'm good, she said, my hospital bags in the car downstairs.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Because she's so pregnant.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Because she's so pregnant.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
And at the funeral when she was talking about the
fact that Neil wanted to meet her child, who's going
to come any any second now, and that was the
moment that tipped her to tears. I just went the
fact that you have gone through unimaginable grief and showed
up and played on and not only just showed up,

(08:34):
but had to stand up in front of people and
speak and share your grief with people. Yeah, there's not
enough superlatives for how incredible that woman is and how
incredible that cause is.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
And it was just it was so special.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
Yeah, an unbelievable day and unbelievable day to be a
part of.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
But if there's a better sport, I'd like.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
To hear it, because man, forty mil forty mils insane.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
And look, I want to have this segue respectfully, but
I mean, if we're talking about you know, millions now,
I say billions, then Monaco is the place for that.
And I'm just talking about one person walk and walk
in the pit. Kimmy, k what does she mean for

(09:21):
F one?

Speaker 5 (09:22):
We're getting into it now, Georgie.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
The very foundation of our friendship was you and I
in a sports newsroom, specifically sport, wanting to talk about
pop culture, yeah, and wondering who was going to win
The Bachelor, And at that stage in our lives we
probably thought, damn, when are these world's going to intersect?
And our bosses thought, damn, when will these girls stop

(09:57):
asking us to talk about when these things will intersect? Well,
welcome to the year twenty twenty six, where you cannot
throw a ball or drive a car without hitting into
pop culture, loyalty, royalty, and finally, our very niche expertise
that we've been honing for a very long time, very

(10:19):
long time. I feel like there is no one better
positioned to talk about the celebrity intersect with sport at
the moment is at fever pitch, and we are ready
because I want to know what you think about it,
what we think sport fans think about it, and how

(10:40):
the F one community in particular is responding to Kardashian infiltration.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
We know that the NBA had previously dealt with this.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
Kendall has made a joke with a gambling company about
how many teams that she has derailed through her dating.
Also immaculate advertising.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Backupis advertising. Then there's the chloe of it all. Hey,
Tristan Thompson, you know, there's, there's, there's that. It's nothing new,
which is what we have been saying for our entire lives.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Because people be interested, people be interested, people be interested.
It's what it's what the people want.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
It really is and everything I want.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
And so Kimmy Kay has made her grid debut, of course,
where else but the most famous F one grid in Monaco,
Monica and her bow Sir Lewis Hamilton, my mate Louis
h that I met earlier in the year for all
of three seconds and refrained from saying, is kem hare

(11:45):
I love the voice I put on there. I don't
know why he is also driving out of his damn skin,
out of his skin, out of his as and also.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Out of his age bracket.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
Because the two other blokes that were on the podium
in Monico you can buy in their ages and he's
still older. That's a fact. That's a fun fact. So true,
that's true.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
You've got the abacas out and you fact check that.
That's insane. He said minus two years old.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
He sat on the couch and looked at them and said,
what are both your ages? And they were nineteen and
twenty and he's like, cute, I'm forty one, is he
forty one?

Speaker 3 (12:23):
Forty two?

Speaker 1 (12:23):
Whatever it is they combined, and they both have cute
fan photos with him. Anyway, There's layers to this, but
my thing is the Kim Kutashie of it all. Is
it if they are in love, and let's hope and
assume that they are. She can't do anything right? Is
my by being there, you're annoying fans. It's it's honestly

(12:46):
the Taylor Swift of it all.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
Oh yes, which we have talked about at length on
this podcast previously, Guys, go back check out the episodes.
But it's us talking about the Taylor Swift effect on
the NFL. Hey, it's also I mean currently right now,
when it comes to pop culture, it's romance novels effects
on ice hockey. I know I talk about this all
the time. However, ice Hockey's never been more popular for
anyone ever, never right, so much so that the NHL,

(13:12):
the actual NHL is flying g flip our g flip
to the Stanley Cup because their song blew up on
off campus. So it's like the actual leagues themselves are
loving this attention. You can't tell me that the Formula
one wasn't, like, thank God we have KIMMI send her
go go, go, get so on, get her in the pit.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
So I'm very interested because F one is sharing content
of Kim arriving, right, and it's then gone, and I
read the fans and the fans like remember when this
used to be a sports account.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
I'm bigger, and.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
I kind of get it. HIMMI out him out. If
you're an F one fan and have been for a
very long time and you love the cars of it all,
the transition in how Punny in tended the media is
covering the sport that you love, and the shift into
more caring about the popular culture and showing the popular

(14:09):
culture side of things, because it's what neutral fans, if
there are such things in motorsport.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
Want to see.

Speaker 1 (14:18):
You'd go give me back to the cars, give me
back to the technical side.

Speaker 5 (14:21):
Of it.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
That's what I love.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Can I Can I hit you though? Can I hit
you though? With I think that a lot of this
has to do with the new fans being welcomed into
this sport and is welcome in inverted commas, being welcomed
into this sport half no, only half heartedly, because all
of those new fans are women, and so therefore you

(14:45):
get the purists going out there being like, what the hell?
How dare this happen? How dare we be looking at this?
Things are changing? I don't like it. I don't like
that this It's seen as frivolous and all of this
just because you've got so many new fans coming to
these sports, predominantly women, because they have been spaces not
for women. Previously, women haven't been like da da da.

(15:07):
But now genuinely there's so many female f one fans
who could tell you the inside out of a car,
like could tell you exactly what's happening with the tires,
could tell you about the strategy, the race strategy, toto,
what's happening? You know?

Speaker 1 (15:19):
Who cares if they can't, but who cares if they
want to watch it and not understand it?

Speaker 3 (15:23):
How's it hurting you exactly.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
So I actually think that a lot of that criticism
of people being just like I remember when there's used
to be a sport account. Hey, guess what it can
be both, It can be got, both things can exist.
I can be really interested in the results and looking
at Kimmy Antonelli Kimmi A and exactly what's happening with him.
Just at the same token, I can be absolutely thrilled
that Kimmy Kay is there like hard launching her relationship

(15:47):
with Lewis Hamilton to the point where I think you
should lead a national sports bulletin with it.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
You mentioned Kemi A.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
Kimmi Ah, this is arguably my favorite piece of content,
and there was a lot of content that came out
of Monaco that was immaculate. Mercedes have clapped back at
a particular moment where Kim Kardashian may have helped herself
to a particular item that was on the grid.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
I don't know if you're aware of this.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
Georgie, Oh my god. So she is walking along and
cameras everywhere from bird's eye view, and she has picked
up a towel because it's hot in Monaco and gone.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
To tap her brow.

Speaker 1 (16:29):
That towel was strategically placed on a block meant for
Kimmi Antonelli.

Speaker 3 (16:36):
Who won the race.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Okay, someone has tried to stop her to explain that
the towel is not for her, and she has continued
with a very innocuous white towel to tap her brow. Okay, yep,
Mercedes have responded with this, I wasn't wondering.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
Have you seen Kimmy's tower.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
No, he's washing his head and noel towel. It has
to this point.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
What's what's it called?

Speaker 1 (17:19):
When you reshare it reshare It's got ten thousand share,
ten thousand reshares.

Speaker 2 (17:26):
And this is what I'm saying, all the things can
be true. This is such good content. This is how
you get new fans. This is how you just everything
blows up. Not that if one necessarily needed new fans,
but this is so fun. You're bringing the next journey in.
It helps that Kimi Antonelle looks like a little Gucci
model and he's you know.

Speaker 1 (17:43):
You want to talk about if come on my fashion Olympics.

Speaker 3 (17:51):
Are the partners of F one drivers.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
They are immaculate, they are chic the level and that
let's be honest, they are wealthy, but man, Rebecca Donaldson,
if I come back as anything but her in the
next life, I'm really upset.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
On the really said to you was George Russell and
Carmen waiting like on a balcony and Monaco be.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
Yea was terrible.

Speaker 5 (18:13):
We're looking well, yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
We're looking for Lewis's new girlfriend. Meanwhile, I was blinded
by the cartier on Carmen's wrist and I was like,
how do I get it? I want everything, I love
everything about this.

Speaker 1 (18:24):
And it's not why aren't we allowed to? And this
is why this podcast is important because I couldn't, honestly,
hand on heart, I couldn't do this on ABC, no,
I know, and if we, if we, and honestly it
was breaking and it was world news and all of that,
and if I hadn't been like, well and also one
Kimmy Kay's made an arrival.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
Can you imagine?

Speaker 1 (18:44):
And yet it's what people are talking about, right.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
I mean I also may have texted the sports editor
at ten on the weekend and been like, we're leading
with Kimmy k Yeah, you did it.

Speaker 5 (18:56):
I did.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
I did, and he went, well, we're leading with the
other Kimmy, and I was like, okay, that's fair, that's okay, okay,
as long as there's one Kimmi. I just thought that,
you know, of all the years for a Kimmi to
take all of the headlines in Formula one, how crazy
that we're spoiled for choice with two of them. You know,
we've got two, and we're blessed, We're the blessed ones.
But this isn't the only thing happening right now in

(19:17):
the intersection of celebrity and sport. Also currently, you talked
about the NBA in the Kardashian effect on the NBA.
I mean, hello, Kylie, Jennisit and courtside with the Knicks
for Timmy Shaller may a lot, aren't they.

Speaker 3 (19:30):
This is another one.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
And so the elephant in the room here is the
affordability of access to sport. Not affordability is not the
word you'd use for Monaco. The super yachts are out
of control, like it would arguably be the most concentrated
wealth around a sporting event, I'd argue in the world.
So we know that Monico's not for the every fan.

(19:55):
But there's something in particular about I think this NBA
Finals series and just how exorbitant. The ticketing has been,
especially for the Knicks that have been starved of success
for so long.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
The Spurs not so much.

Speaker 1 (20:07):
But you look at the the fans that are out
in the streets that would have loved to have been there,
but don't have two hundred thousand dollars for two tickets.

Speaker 3 (20:18):
And then you see no.

Speaker 1 (20:20):
But then you see Kylie Jenner sitting courtside, who you
know is only there because her partner cares. And you
don't hate the player, hate the game like she fact.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
I mean, I'm spoiling things, but our fun fact coming
up may directly directly be about Kylie's partner, Timothy shelle
May and his love, his love for the Knicks.

Speaker 1 (20:42):
Although you can say the ballet enough for the ballet.

Speaker 2 (20:45):
Yeah lost that too. But I actually think then this
is actually on the clubs themselves.

Speaker 3 (20:51):
Yes, one hundred percent.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
Don't go or like you want them there because it's
going to get the attention. It's like it just it
just is. You're going to attract the sports fans. You're
also going to attract the cash sports fans. You're also
going to attract people who do not care about sport.
We know, we know, our mantra on this on this podcast.
Everyone likes sport, you just don't know it yet. That's
why sporting movies are popular. Okay, yes here endeth the

(21:15):
Ted talk. But it's on those clubs then, who I
don't think are struggling. I don't think they're struggling, But
it's on those teams to then I think at least
pay it forward in some way and provide.

Speaker 3 (21:26):
I know it.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
I know it's a business. I know it's a business.
But when you get to that stage, when you get
to the NBA playoffs, you get to you know, a
Game four or Game five or whatever, they should be
providing seats for their hardcore members. Yeah, you know, for
those die hard fans. It's like when you see people
who get surprised with tickets to the Super Bowl and
it's not even between their teams that they go for

(21:47):
and they cry because it's been something that they've wanted
to do for their entire lives and it's so hard
to get there.

Speaker 3 (21:52):
It is a volume problem too.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
Yes, these are not one hundred thousand seating courts Like oh,
I don't know, like it's and it's I completely understand that.
I've just contradicted what I said about being like, leave
keep alone.

Speaker 3 (22:07):
Why is kylie there?

Speaker 1 (22:08):
Like it doesn't quite like I get it, but there's
something about you.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
It's jellm me.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
It's okay, Yeah, it's okay.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
Yeah, I just I don't we look like geniuses. I
also think is the takeaway because we have had finger
on pulse for this world for a very long time,
long time being our entire lives, yes one, and I think.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
We're just fun. We're also seeing that in the way
that sports covered right in the same way that there
were people paid to cover content at the Australian Open
and people lost their mind about the fact that influencers
were courtside, and it's like, well you people just don't
like the word influencer.

Speaker 3 (22:46):
People are being.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
Paid to market sport to the next generation. And that's
just the way that we're seeing everything going forward.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
Yeah, and it I do think though it is. I mean,
we work in this field, we've worked in this space
for fifteen years. But I also do who do understand
people who are not in this world who do not
see you know this, and they're just like, how it's
the futility of it all right? Being like I love
this team more than anything? How can I get there?
Why can't I have that same experience? And so I

(23:12):
understand that that that is also that is also difficult.
But when we are thinking about the celebrity and their
love and their passion for their team and whether or
not they deserve to be there, I would like to
tell you a fun fact story about mister Timothy shallamh.

Speaker 3 (23:29):
You you've met, who you've met?

Speaker 2 (23:31):
Who I've met? Yes, who I've met? Who's chanted my name?
I digress? Did you know that? In twenty ten the
Knicks ran a meet and greet scavenger hunt around New
York where they gave clues out and the fans had
to interpret those clues and find them. At the end,

(23:54):
they had their players, Landry Fields, which can I just
say what a sports name? Landry Fields and Andy Rottens
were inside Grand Central Station awaiting whatever super fan figured
out the clues first to find them. No, the person
no that found them was fourteen year old Timothy shallow May,

(24:17):
who beat out every other Knicks fan to get his photo.

Speaker 1 (24:23):
Stop has not aged?

Speaker 2 (24:25):
Why has he not aged? He looks exactly the same.
Fourteen year old Timothy shallow May figured out the Scavenger hunts,
you win that meet and greet with those two players
for the Knicks, Like, this is what I'm talking about.

Speaker 1 (24:36):
I love the met Gala to be there.

Speaker 3 (24:39):
That's a fan. That's a fan. Come on, that is
a fan.

Speaker 2 (24:43):
That is a fan.

Speaker 3 (24:44):
That is that is a sensational fun fact from you.
It's love.

Speaker 2 (24:47):
It's fun. It's fun, you know. And Hey, I was
gonna say, celebrities they're just like us. They're absolutely not,
but but they're us with means.

Speaker 1 (24:57):
Maybe mate yees so fair. Maybe we just need to
get celebrities on to talk about their favorite teams at nauseum.

Speaker 2 (25:04):
Come on, now, this is what we need. This is
what we need. Copyright that we're doing that, we're trademarking that.

Speaker 3 (25:09):
You know.

Speaker 2 (25:10):
We should get Shallow mayon to talk about the next
he would produce over totilt. He got another scavenger Hunt
to fucking win, Like, come on, he knows, Wow.

Speaker 1 (25:22):
We can play him chanting your name and the intro. Hey,
this stuff rides itself until next week.

Speaker 2 (25:28):
Be a great sport.
