You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Oh what's going on? Everybody?
Speaker 4 (00:31):
Welcome in here as we are your unofficial Chargers postgame
wrap up show. If you unofficial unofficial and I have
many thoughts on the Thursday night game and including one
of the unfortunate outcomes of the Broncos getting kicked in
(00:53):
the teeth this evening.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
I'll get to that momentarily.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
We're broadcasting live from the tire rack dot Com studios
tire rack dot Com. We'll help get you there an
unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free road hazard protection, and
over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirereck dot Com. The way
t higher buying should be man. First things first, one
of the absolute joys of filling in for Big Ben Mahler,
(01:17):
it's getting to you know, bump shoulders with the Mallard
Militias fantastic.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
It's the overnight hours.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
So that that's what I started off doing at Fox
Sports Radio. I would do weekend overnights just like Ben
did way back when Ben did it way before me.
But that's what I started doing. I started doing weekend
overnights with Justin Cooper. And that's another one of the
joys of filling in for Big Ben. I get to
hang out with my guy Coop. Now you guys don't
(01:46):
know this, I'm gonna tell you something about Justin Cooper.
You don't know the way he greets me. Every single
time when I'm filling in and we're doing a show together,
he gives me. I don't know if you guys are
big Lamb of God heavy metal fans, you know, but
they have a singer named Randy Bligh and he sings
from the throat, and that's what Coop does from the throat,
(02:09):
and I can't do nearly as good of a job
as Coop does.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
He'll give me a what up.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
That's how he greets me tradition and after it broncos
lost empathetic second half fashions.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
It greets me what up. That's what he had for me.
That's what he had.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
So one of the absolute joys of filling in for
Big Ben. It's no longer in play because Coop's Broncos lost.
It is a big game on Thursday night, as they
had a nice halftime lead and then the fourth quarter
came around and the Broncos had no mojo. Now, one
of the big storylines of this game is that there
(02:52):
was a free kick that was made for the first
time since nineteen seventy six.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
And so I thought of and I'll.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Get to the play and what led up to it
and all that good stuff, but I thought of the
late great John Madden, because if you're an old school
football fan, I'm forty seven years old. Now I can't
believe I'm I'm almost ancient by this, But when I'm
growing up, I can't tell you how many times the
(03:25):
late great John Madden would talk about this rule. It
might be before halftime, but you know there's a rule.
There's a free kick. If you call for a fair catch,
you get an untimed down. You can attempt a free
kick where there's no rush. I can't tell you how
many times he said that. And this was the first
(03:46):
made free kick since nineteen seventy six. I just love
that it took that long for us to see another
made free kick. But the way it worked out was
just hideous clock management by Denver.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
That's what led to this.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
So right before halftime, Denver had a twenty one to
ten lead. Okay, Denver's up by eleven points. They're at
their own eighteen yard line with forty one seconds to now.
I believe they had two timeouts. Don't quote me on that,
but I believe they had two timeouts. So if you're
backed up to your own eighteen, you've got a rookie quarterback,
(04:24):
you only have forty one seconds to play with, You've
got an eleven point lead. This is one of these
maybe a call, a conservative play, a conservative pass, maybe
a draw and if you if you have a big gain,
then okay, now you get aggressive and you try to
get into field goal range. So what does Denver do. Well,
(04:44):
they tried a short pass. They lost three yards. Okay,
so you're backed up to your own fifteen. There are
under thirty seconds left. Just go to halftime, right, No,
John Payton's like, let's throw another pass. So it's incomplete.
Seventeen seconds left. So Denver just runs the ball. Let's
(05:06):
get to the half. Oh, Jim Harbaugh calls time out
eight seconds left, so Denver has to punt it. The
Chargers call for a fair catch. Uh oh, fair catch interference, Yes, Denver.
They compound the problem by committing a penalty. And so
this is where the rule that John Medden recited over
(05:28):
and over and over again finally came into play. Where
you have an untimed down, you have a free kick opportunity.
So Dick or the kicker, Cameron Dicker, he trots onto
the field and you're basically in a kickoff formation. There's
no rush. There's no rush. That's why it's a free kick.
(05:51):
It be kind of like, I don't know, kind of
like a technical foul in basketball where the one guy
shoots it.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Right, It's a little bit like that.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
It's kind of like football's version of a free throw,
if you will. And so Dicker lines up, he kicks
it at the line of scrimmage. That's the trick, right,
there's no rush, so you don't have to set up
eight yards you know, in back of the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
You're just right up on it.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
So it's a fifty seven yard field goal, Dicker makes
it three points, so instead of Denver leading twenty one
to ten, they're only leading twenty one to thirteen, and
those are three valuable points as the game goes along.
Fast forward to the end of the game. My goodness,
I didn't even think about this until now. So Denver
(06:40):
is down by ten points at the end as opposed
to seven. Now, to be fair, we don't know how
every single scenario plays out from that point on, right,
If there's no free kick, if Sean Payton doesn't completely
botch the clock at the end of the half and
there is no free kick, who knows if it's the
(07:03):
exact same point differential at the end of the game, right,
We don't know that, but it's at least possible that
Denver toward the end of the game they're only trailing
by seven points as opposed to trailing by ten points,
and so they get beyond midfield a little bit and
Denver lines up for a long field goal that they made,
(07:26):
which was interesting strategy because you have to score twice.
So Sean Payton opted for it was like a fifty
five yard field goal, and Lutz made it and they
cut the deficit to seven. They didn't get the on
side kick. That was basically the end of the game.
But it just dawned on me that that free kick kind.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Of screwed up an in game bet of yours.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
Truly.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Here, I was on bow Knicks.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
I went with bow Knicks in game passing yardage, and
I needed three more passing yards from bow and instead
Sean Payton's like, eh, let's just kick the field goal.
We need to score twice anyway.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
And I'm like, no, Sean, I need three more passing yards.
What are you doing?
Speaker 4 (08:07):
So it's crazy how that came into play. A random
free kick at the end of the half could have
absolutely impacted the scenario at the end of the game.
And as far as the betting public is concerned, oh
my gosh, it's crazy how one thing leads to another
(08:28):
leads to another.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
It's it's insane.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
But long story short, what I'm telling you is the
free kick at the end of the half that could
have impacted a random bow Knicks passing yardage bet.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
That's crazy how football works. Now.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Jim Harbaugh chimed in and in true Jim Harbough fashion,
he talked about the free kick and said it's my
favorite rule in football, and I can totally believe that.
Jim Harbor, as we know, quite quirky, and I could
absolutely see him be like, oh, I love the free
kick if we could just execute the freak kick. Remember
(09:05):
Belichick years ago had Doug Flutie do the dropkick extra point.
It's some of those cool yet nerdy football things that
just the die hards, like the football chunkies, love that
kind of stuff.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
And so I could absolutely believe Jim Harbaugh.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Oh my gosh, he probably you know, that's like, I
don't want to get too graphic over.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Here, but you know he had to, you know, shield.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
Himself from having an orgasm on the sideline when they
made the free kick at.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
The end of the ave. You're kidding me. He loves
that type of stuff.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Now here's something else to keep in mind, and I'll
expand on this as we go on through the night.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Bonnicks. Let me hit on Bonnicks here, and at the risk.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
Of completely alienating Justin Cooper from the rest of the show,
I gotta say something that's true. I have to say
something that is absolutely true here. So bo Nicks, if
you look at the box score, you'd probably say man.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
He played pretty well. Look at his numbers.
Speaker 4 (10:10):
Twenty nine for forty through for two hundred and sixty
three yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions. Also ran the ball
three times for twenty five yards.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
That's good. Those are all good numbers.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
Here's the thing, it's what doesn't show up in the
box score that sometimes makes a huge difference in football games.
And that was the case on Thursday night. Now, let
me be clear, I'm not putting the lost squarely on
bow Nicks's shoulders. I'm putting it on the Denver Suckey
defense that finally woke up and said, why are we
(10:44):
good anyway? We got one premier player in Patrick Certan
and a bunch of just random dudes. It's the no
name defense, Like, how are we tied for number one in.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Scoring defense this year?
Speaker 4 (10:57):
And they woke up on Thursday, like, oh yeah, it
shouldn't be that good. Let's get diced up by a
guy on a gibbie ankle, you know. But I'm not
putting it squarely on bow Knicks. But there was a
play to be made, and bow Knicks didn't make it.
He had Marvin Mimm's wide open along the sideline, wide
open by a good five yards and he underthrew him,
(11:20):
pass was broken up and they didn't score any points.
That's the thing, man, this is the way it works
in the NFL. You can learn a lot of things
and you can grabble you can form opinions on box scores.
I'm not saying you can't, but there are a lot
of things that don't show up there that absolutely impact
(11:42):
wins and losses. And again, let me be clear, I'm
not putting this solely on bow knicks, but that's a
play that has to be made. If you've got a
guy streaking along the sideline wide open, you.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Can't be late.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
You can't significantly underthrow that guy and leave points on
the field. Like that's why these got Lamar Jackson has
been sensational this season, as he has numerous regular seasons.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
He's a two time MVP.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
The problem with Lamar is when we get to the
playoffs and there are some plays to be made, there
are throws to be made. It might only be one
in a particular game, and he won't make it. He
will not make that play and a lot of times
that's the difference between.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Points and no points, winning and losing. And I'm telling you.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
If bow Knicks makes that throw and it was an
easy throw, that's a layup throw, Denver might have won
that game. And that's why I just cautioned anybody to
just look at the box score and say, what is this?
Speaker 3 (12:48):
No guy talk? When's Big Ben back? What is he
talking to? Look at this guy?
Speaker 4 (12:51):
Two hundred and sixty three yards, great completion rate, touchdown,
two touchdowns, no picks.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
He's a rookie. It's like, I don't care if he's
a rookie or a fifteen year vet.
Speaker 4 (13:03):
You can't miss a guy who's opened by five yards
in the end zone, like heading into the end zone.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
You can't miss a guy that wide open.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
In the NFL can't do it, as Mike Singletary once said,
and that was a play that should have been made
that wasn't made. I'm telling you keep your eye on
that come playoff time, because I guarantee there will be
a game, there might be multiple games, and you can
look at the guy's box score and say, hey, Lamari
(13:31):
played pretty well. Why is anyone saying anything negative. It's like, well,
there was that one play in the third quarter against
the Chiefs when he had a wide open receiver and
threw it into the fifth throw. And that's the difference
between wins and losses. This happened all the time with
remember Zach Wilson with the Jets that there were times,
(13:54):
believe it or not, that Zach Wilson he would make
some great throws, he would make some great plays.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
He'd be like, wow, man, what why does this guy suck?
Speaker 4 (14:03):
And then the next play it'd be a wide open
guy and he would airmail it and you're like, oh, yeah,
that's why it's You might not be terrible the whole game,
but if there are some plays to be made and
you just don't make him in those critical moments, it
comes back to bite you. It absolutely does, and come
playoff time, it's magnified even more. Well.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
The Broncos.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
The good news they're still in the playoffs as we
speak right now. Chargers leap frogdam Chargers are a sixth seed.
Right now, Denver is clinging to the seventh seed. But
they would have to lose out and all these six
and eight teams they'd have to win out. I think
Denver probably still makes it, but that was a missed
opportunity for Denver tonight. I am Brian though in for
(14:48):
Big Beton Mallard fired up to be here, feel free
to check in eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox.
Is your number eight eight seven six sixty three. I
forget the numbers. It's on Fox. You can figure it out.
I'm sorry I haven't done that in forever. I probably
I shouldn't tried to have done it on the fly. Well,
it's eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox. Use the letters,
(15:11):
you'll figure it out.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
It's not that complicated.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
I don't know if I did anything to you know,
get Coop out of his shell with this monologue.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
But we'll find out. We'll find out.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
Some news with a Sammy Sosa apology.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
I just love that story, so, oh my gosh, it's
so many layers to that story.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Josh Allen, crediting his fiance. I like that story.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
We got a lot to get to, many many things

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Ben Mallor
Show weekdays at two am Eastern eleven pm Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 4 (16:28):
I probably know it for Big Ben Mallor here on
Fox Sports Radio. Man a couple of things here I
just saw, so I have a first things first, if
I was smart, I would be in La right now.
I didn't think about this until today, and I'm like,
(16:51):
wait a minute, I'm in.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Vegas right now.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
I could have driven over, gone to the Broncos Chargers
game and then been doing the show for I'm the
studio in.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
LA right now. I could have easily done that. I'm like,
why did I think about that? Now?
Speaker 4 (17:10):
My girlfriend had a friend of hers visiting, and so
that's that's probably what I was thinking. But we easily
could have pulled it off. They were A friend left
earlier this morning, but we still could have driven over
there and gone to the game, done the show there.
So missed opportunity.
Speaker 6 (17:27):
Man.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
I've been to Sofi to see the Rams play, but
I have not seen the Chargers play at so far.
I've seen the Chargers in San Diego, saw them play
at least once. I think that was the only time
I saw them play the Bears. But I need to
get to Sofi to see the Chargers. I want to
see a Chargers game there, see how that feels, how
it rivals the Rams, all that type of stuff.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
I could have done that tonight. Coop.
Speaker 4 (17:51):
You didn't go to the game tonight, right, you weren't
there in person. I don't believe were you?
Speaker 3 (17:57):
Yes? You went?
Speaker 5 (17:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (18:00):
Is that why you're in such a surly mood this
uh these early morning hours here?
Speaker 5 (18:07):
Well, I mean it's not it's not good.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Oh man, Now I miss this.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
So Coop and I we always have a chat open
for the militia for the calls anytime he wants to,
you know, get my attention, chime in that sort of thing.
And I missed this, Coop wrote, not gonna mention how
that was blatant p I you thought that was PI
on Marvin Mims on the sideline there.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
Coop thought, I know it is Oh my god, did
you see the replay? Are you allowed to pull down
a receiver's arms before the ball gets there?
Speaker 3 (18:42):
There's no pulling down of arms.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
That was a good pbud, good pass breakup, right? That
that's like, okay, that's bailing bow Nicks out with a hideous,
hideous throw. If it's a bang bang maybe maybe not,
You're not gonna get that call.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
If the throw is that bad, not happening?
Speaker 5 (19:02):
Sorry, all right, whatever you say, I don't it doesn't
negate the fact that it's pass interference.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
Nah. Nah, that was at best fifty to fifty.
Speaker 5 (19:14):
Have you seen the replay?
Speaker 3 (19:15):
I saw the game live.
Speaker 5 (19:18):
Hold on watch watch that and tell me that's not
pass interference.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Okay, all right, we'll do it on the fly.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
We'll do it live and feel free. Mallard militia to
check in. Okay, let's see this. How is that not bad?
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Is this your burner? Warren Sharp?
Speaker 6 (19:37):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (19:37):
Coop? Is this your no?
Speaker 4 (19:39):
I know?
Speaker 3 (19:41):
Oh god, crimey a river.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
See his arm being pulled down by the defender's arm
it's bang bang.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
See this is super slow motion.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
The ball is there nearly simultaneously. You're not gonna when
the ball is underthrown that badly. You're just not gonna
get that call. That call happens all the time in
the NFL. But it's all the time. It does when
you're when the ball is underthrown and the receiver runs
through the dB, which Marvin Mims does not do. If
(20:16):
he ran through the dB, who is not looking for
the ball?
Speaker 5 (20:20):
Right, He did not turn around look for the ball.
He pulled the receiver's arm down. There's no way that
he can that he has. The receiver does not have
an opportunity to make that catch.
Speaker 4 (20:31):
You're not going to see an official in lifetime. Like again,
this is super slow mode. The Chargers got called for
one penalty for three yards. It sounds like Warren Sharp
had money on uh on Denver here tonight.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
Maybe this is this.
Speaker 5 (20:49):
Is all over social media. I don't know, I don't
know what you're talking about.
Speaker 4 (20:52):
Well, it's all over social media and it's slowed down
frame by frame.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
You're not going to see an official in life.
Speaker 4 (21:00):
I have real time make that call when the ball
is almost there at the same time when when I.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
Was watching it in live real time from the three
hundred section, I said, pass interference. I saw it. Then
the replay confirmed it.
Speaker 3 (21:14):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (21:15):
When I saw it live, if I'm being completely honest,
I said, no way, that's past interference and that's not true.
When I saw it live, I said, Ooh, that's borderline.
That's what I said. I'm like, Oh, it's borderline. Mark Ramsey,
(21:35):
Mark Ramsey's Mark. How are you doing?
Speaker 7 (21:37):
You know?
Speaker 4 (21:38):
I know you're you're not big on the microphone. I
think you do a tremendous job on the microphone, but
you're not You're not big on going.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
On the mic.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
That's correct.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
How are things with you? Everything good? All as well
in the big city there you go? Okay, good. I
want to take you out of your comfort zone.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
You know. I respect that you're like. I'm more behind
the scenes. Man, I'm not not here for the show.
You know, I'm not behind the mic.
Speaker 5 (22:03):
Guy.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
That's fine that.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
I'm like the Guy and the Godfather.
Speaker 3 (22:06):
I push buttons, that's right.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
Body tells me to push a button, I push a button.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (22:12):
Well, I was worried, truth be told, I was worried
about my bow Nicks in game passing prop bet and
I was hoping that wasn't pass interference because they would
have picked up a good what forty forty five yards
on a penalty like that, And when I watched it live,
I was like, Eh, it was close, it was borderline.
(22:32):
It was bang bang, maybe a fraction early. But that's
the thing with these replays. When you watch the super
slow mow frame by frame replay, it looks like it
was the most blatant pass interference call of all time.
That's bang bang, It's not gonna be called. I think
Marvin Mims should have ran through the dB. It's not
(22:54):
the easiest thing to do. He's just trying to make
a play on the ball, but that's an opportunity. If
the dB is not looking for the ball, if you
just run through him and create that contact, it's gonna
be a pass interference call every single time. And Marvin
Mims didn't do that. So I say, bad job by
bo Nicks, significantly underthrown ball that should have been a
(23:16):
layup touchdown, touchdown, and bad job by Marvin Mims. I
put it more on the Broncos not running through the
dB and creating more contact and making the ref make
a call. I put it more on the Broncos than
I do the officials. Right there, Warren Sharp, if he
heard this, he would hate me. It sounds like you
(23:36):
would completely disagree. But it's true.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
It's true.
Speaker 4 (23:40):
Don't come whining to me or the officials because your
quarterback underthrew a pass so badly and the wide receiver
didn't create even more contact by running through the dB.
And it's just like tears of sadness.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
Be called because it was bang bang. Why if it's
bang bang, you might not get the benefit of the doubt.
That's how it goes.
Speaker 4 (24:04):
It's officiating, all right, eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox?
Speaker 3 (24:09):
Is your phone number?
Speaker 4 (24:10):
Oh? I thought we had some Uh I shouldn't known.
I thought the militia was checking in. We'll see on
the chat, you know, like someone's typing there's a message
on its way. And it was just more more videos from.
Speaker 7 (24:25):
That.
Speaker 5 (24:26):
Was that was justin Herbert's Oscar winning performance.
Speaker 4 (24:28):
Uh huh okay, well listen, this is I agree with that.
I don't think that's a flag, but you have to
this was justin Herbert. He scrambled for a few yards,
he slid and there was some very very light contact
that drew a flag.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
I don't agree with the call.
Speaker 4 (24:48):
I think that Herbert did a good job selling it
where he looked like he was maybe injured on the play.
But here's the deal, man, this is right after the
Trevor Lawrence injury, and so it's an over correction, is
what it is. When when Trevor Lawrence was absolutely lit
up by al uh uh.
Speaker 3 (25:12):
I always mess his name up Shair yeah zi shay
year Yeah.
Speaker 4 (25:19):
Like that should have been a penalty, no doubt about it.
The guy got suspended for three games and there was
no penalty, Like, how is that not a penalty?
Speaker 3 (25:26):
That's crazy?
Speaker 4 (25:28):
So that that's an over correction, that's a that's a
garbage call.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
I agree with that. I don't know a problem with that.
Speaker 5 (25:34):
Which extended their drive and it was then a touchdown
instead of a field goal.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
What about the free kick? What do you have to
say about that? Coop near terrible clock management was on
the refs too.
Speaker 5 (25:46):
I mean that was also weak sauce as well. I
mean how I mean how they watched that replay too?
Speaker 3 (25:54):
What the fair catch interference?
Speaker 7 (25:56):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (25:58):
What what legitimate calls went against the Broncos on Thursday night.
Speaker 5 (26:03):
Coop, I'm sure there was that false the couple of
false starts, but no, I mean you've watched the free kick,
the fair catch. He extended the guy receiving the ball
extends his leg outwards.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
So this is like a Reggie Miller kicking out on
a three pointer. Yes, that's what happened.
Speaker 5 (26:27):
If I had a replay of that available, i'd send
that to you as well.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
I'm sure you're checking. We'll see if there's any slow
mo footage of that. One man, this is I said
it was.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
The Chargers unofficial postgame show. This is actually the Broncos
unofficial Sour Grapes postgame shows.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
What this what this is turning out to be?
Speaker 4 (26:49):
You know, let's get out to the phone. Some of
the militia wants to check in here. Andre is over
there in mass has some TNF thoughts.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
It's going, Andre, Hey, how you.
Speaker 6 (27:00):
Doing thanybody making Nicole list? And I see I feel
Coop's pain. Tough laws for the Denver Broncos. Nonetheless, both
teams at nine and six, still with a chance to
get into the second season and make some noise. No
team wants to play these guys in the first round.
They're trying to get that buy. They're trying to be
the Kansas City treat Chiefs or the Buffalo Bills because
(27:23):
he coming in at nine and six, are coming in
at twelve and two. In regardless, these two teams could
could knock the top AFT team off in the first
round and break through it the divisional rounds and really
makes some noise and get some teams some problems. So
somebody had to lose, right, call stuff, call back bank
play swings the game one way or the other. But
we have to credit both franchises in my opinion, for
(27:45):
really turning themselves around. Specifically the Broncos coop. I hate
to mention this, but they did give up seventy points
last year. The Miami Dolphins. Okayon Payton wasn't the sideline,
you know, they full red screaming at Russell Wilson, who's
balling out in Pittsburgh right now. So it was kind
of touch and go. And we know that Hardball has
worked his magic keys come in turned everything around. And
(28:05):
these are two here I say, formidable teams going into
the playoffs that people are going to have to really
pay attentions Gray.
Speaker 3 (28:12):
I don't think they're formidable at all.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
Man, I got to disagree with you here, Like you
wouldn't want to play the Broncos and a rookie quarterback
at your home stadium in the first round?
Speaker 3 (28:21):
Like who would you?
Speaker 4 (28:23):
Okay, if you look at all these playoff teams, you
would That'd be my first choice. If I'm the top
seed and I get my choice of who I'm playing,
I could either play let's say the Chiefs get their choice.
We could play the Bills or the Steelers, or the
Texans or the Ravens or the Chargers or the Broncos.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
I'm taking the Broncos first overall. That's why I'd want
to play most newly noted.
Speaker 6 (28:44):
But you wouldn't want to play the Chargers with Jim
Harbar and Justin Herbert. You would not.
Speaker 4 (28:48):
I'd absolutely sign up to play against them. Like that's
I trust me. I hear what you're saying. But there
are tougher teams than them. I understand they can trip
you up. And that's your point, and I agree with you,
But this idea of like, oh man, look out, we're
cowering in fear.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
We don't want to play them. It's like, bring them on.
Speaker 4 (29:08):
If you can't beat the Chargers of the Broncos, you're
not gonna beat anybody who's better than them in the
playoffs anyway.
Speaker 6 (29:15):
Neither one is the cup kick, and that's what I'm
getting yet. Yeah, typically the Chargers, they're gonna run the ball,
they're gonna grind you down, They're gonna be strategic, they're
gonna execute. It's going to be a close game in
the playoffs, which is you want that soft seat in
the first round, you want that easy out. And I
just think both of these two teams are Peyton in
the second year of his program, hardball launching. They're launching.
(29:38):
The Chargers, they're they're gonna be tough for them what
you would expect from a first round point. Thanks taking
to call you got it?
Speaker 4 (29:46):
Drey, There is Drey and mass I don't know, man, Uh,
this is the time of year when it's you could
go to the NFC side, like no one wants to
play the Washington Commanders right now. I would bring them on,
Like that's the thing, man, I understand these teams that
are maybe seated sixth or seventh, absolutely they're capable of
(30:10):
pulling off an upset no doubt about it, and that's
what Dre is getting at. I agree with that, but
maybe it's just a battle of semantics. I don't know
if it's the exact wording or whatever. It's like we
make it sound like, I don't know, Like the Broncos
are capable of what rattling off two three wins, challenging
(30:32):
to go to a Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
They're incapable. They have no shot none. I can't believe
their defense has done this well this season. I can't.
I don't get I'm gonna oh coop one.
Speaker 4 (30:42):
Hundred dollars of Taco Bell swag and I have no
earthly idea how Heading into Thursday night, they were leading
the league along with the Chargers and Eagles in scoring defense.
Speaker 5 (30:53):
Taco Bell swag?
Speaker 3 (30:55):
What that was the bet? It was one hundred bucks
in Taco Bell.
Speaker 4 (31:00):
They're not wanting to cash, Well, I'll give you cash.
But it was supposed to be a Taco Bell gift
card thing. What do you against chew loops? Now one
hundred dollars to Taco Bell?
Speaker 3 (31:09):
N Well, yeah, I just venmo you anyway with it.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
But uh, let me get to the real. Bill Miller
is in Denver, I'm curious what he has to say here.
What's going on?
Speaker 3 (31:20):
Bill? You're on Fox Sports Radio, Brian?
Speaker 2 (31:24):
How you doing good?
Speaker 3 (31:25):
Bude?
Speaker 8 (31:27):
So I'm just mad that our defense sucked. Lonete ain't
the answer no more.
Speaker 7 (31:33):
I used to believe. And can I hang out o this?
Speaker 3 (31:38):
You're giving up already?
Speaker 5 (31:39):
This is what a terrible call.
Speaker 8 (31:42):
I mean, he was the answer, right, he was supposed
to be our guy. And he can't beat the Chargers ever,
He's played him twice five against teams that are above
eight hundreds, now one in six.
Speaker 7 (31:59):
I believe.
Speaker 4 (32:02):
I don't know, man, he's a rookie. Did you think
he played badly on Thursday?
Speaker 8 (32:07):
He hold onto the ball, lay too long? Our offensive
wine is great, wow, and he's holding onto the ball
over three seconds and can't find me, can't find a receiver.
Speaker 3 (32:21):
So who are we looking at in the draft?
Speaker 7 (32:23):
Problem?
Speaker 8 (32:24):
Or is it a bow Negs problem? We have a problem.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
Who are we looking at in the draft?
Speaker 7 (32:28):
Here?
Speaker 4 (32:28):
I'm looking at the uh what what draft pick the
Broncos might have. We're getting rid of Bo already?
Speaker 6 (32:34):
You're going to get rid of Bo bow.
Speaker 8 (32:36):
My we might be getting rid of I don't know.
We need offensive wine we need something.
Speaker 3 (32:41):
Maybe, Brian, how about Cousins? Could you get Kirk Cousins
in there? Would that be an upgrade?
Speaker 8 (32:49):
No, that's not an upgrade. Kirk Cousins will never be
an upgrade.
Speaker 4 (32:54):
Okay, that's just like I don't agree that you should
kick Bow to the curb, but I'm going.
Speaker 6 (33:00):
Down the curve.
Speaker 8 (33:02):
I'm just saying he's he was supposed to be our answer.
He was supposed to ride us past Russell Wilson.
Speaker 4 (33:09):
Let me ask you this, though, Bill, If I said
before the season began that the Broncos would be nine
and six right now with the rookie quarterback and almost
certainly going to be a playoff team, would you have
not taken that?
Speaker 3 (33:24):
I'd say, you're okay, And then here they are, so
it's not all bad?
Speaker 8 (33:29):
Right, Well, all right, all right, Bryan, that's yeah.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
Like if you would have said I'm delusional and yet
this is what you're looking at, then that's that's good.
Speaker 6 (33:43):
I'm so sad.
Speaker 8 (33:44):
If you give us a little bit, we want a
lot of bit.
Speaker 7 (33:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
The over unders for the for the Broncos this season
was five and a half.
Speaker 3 (33:52):
Yeah, wow, and they're nine and six. That's not too bad,
not too bad. I mean, I get it.
Speaker 4 (33:59):
Bill, I'm with you, Like you can underthrow wide open
receiver and then we've got crocodile tears wonning Pi.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
You know, like you got to make that play. But
it's not all doom and gloom for bow Nicks. Not
all doom and gloom.
Speaker 4 (34:12):
All right, feel free to check in eight seven, seven
ninety nine on Fox is your number. We'll get right
back out to the militia here. I love this man
because you never know what direction it's.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
Gonna go in.
Speaker 4 (34:24):
Right like one minute, it's look out for the Broncos.
No one wants to play him the next thing. Bo
Nix is not the answer. Hey, he's not our guy.
Speaker 7 (34:32):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (34:33):
That's why I love overnight Radio. It's fantastic. It's the best.
All right, Coming up, we get to the militia and
also oof, this is not great news. As the big
games begin, I'll give you some details as far as
that goes. I'm probably no in for Big Ben Malor
hang with us right here on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Ben Maller
Show weekdays at two am Eastern n pm Pacific.
Speaker 4 (35:01):
I probably knowing for big Ben Maller here on Fox
Sports Radio. Oh man, Wow, this just popped up on
the call screen. I think we got to go straight there,
just says, Butch is in Germany. I I'll get to
my story about Carson Beck momentarily we roll out the
(35:23):
red carpet for Butch in Germany.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
What's going on? Butcher on Fox Sports Radio?
Speaker 7 (35:29):
Hey Brian, how are you? Man? You're doing a good
jobs doing it for Bill Miller.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
Well, thank you, Butch, I appreciate that.
Speaker 6 (35:37):
Man.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
How are things with you?
Speaker 7 (35:39):
Yeah, No, that's all good. It's a morning show for me.
It's a you know, it's only like Matt and Clark
in the morning here getting your hair off from work.
And anyway, I just want to call a couple you're
talking about, especially the NFL and who the hell hasn't
(36:04):
heard Mike fill yet? Jesus Christ.
Speaker 4 (36:07):
Well, it might be just a matter of time because
it looks like Ryan Day is on the way out.
I know his name is circulating there for Ohio State.
I could see that happening for sure.
Speaker 7 (36:18):
Yeah, you bought some other stuff too, about like different
quarterbacks and yeah, I mean another thing. Uh, I think
you're pretty spawn on about the most stuff, especially uh
Shaun Watson and uh he's Williams of the Bears. I
(36:42):
mean I think I think he can. I think that
guy has a legitimate shot. He just needs.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
Yeah, you got to give it a little bit of time. Yeah, exactly,
it's gonna take a little bit of time.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
That's the way it goes. By the way, where are
you from, Butch, You from the States?
Speaker 7 (36:59):
Yeah, California?
Speaker 3 (37:00):
Okay? Are you're living out there in Germany now?
Speaker 7 (37:04):
Yeah, we're actually about two weeks from moving back to
moving back to the state that I just came out here.
I'm a contractor for the military, so I came out
here for a two or three year contract.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Very cool, man.
Speaker 7 (37:18):
Can we move back to the States. It can make
me watch football in real time at two o'clock in
the morning, which was awesome. But that'll movie that'll move
me to uh, that will put me in Ben's category
of Uh, you know, I won't be a I won't
be a I probably won't be listening to the show
at nighttime anymore because it will be normal time, normal
(37:39):
time for me. There we're in Germany. Uh, you guys,
this show comes on at eight o'clock in the morning, Jerremany, Germany.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
Times so nice, all right?
Speaker 7 (37:51):
Yeah, I live at all time, and I like the
show on the weekend, so I appreciate it. I like
all the everything he is do Lorena and Coop and yeah,
who's the bus turner Roberto?
Speaker 3 (38:05):
Yeah, Roberto's awesome.
Speaker 6 (38:06):
Man.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
I was at a Raiders game the other day and
Roberto like the post I made. So it's good to
hear from him. But good stuff, good to hear from.
Butch over there in Germany very nice. You don't see
you know, someone in Germany every time on the call screen,
you know. So we had to go there real fast,
by the way. One of the updates Carson Beck, who
(38:28):
is a hopeful first round draft pick. His stock is
sliding because he hasn't had the greatest of seasons for
the dogs over there at Georgia, but he might be
out for the entire playoff run for Georgia. They're preparing
to play without him. He's got an injured elbow on
his throwing arm, so he's exploring surgery options. So this
(38:49):
sophomore Gunner Stockton, he's expected to make his first college
start in the College Football Playoff that would be next
week in the show Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day
and Georgia will face the winner of the Indiana Notre
Dame matchup. And if you've listened to me for any
(39:10):
length of time, you know I'm from South Bend, Indiana
and I bleed Notre Dame football. So that is an
interesting headline to me. I asked Coop a minute ago.
I'm like, Coop, you have any love for college football?
He hit me with not really, It's like, what no
love for college football? He just said USC has sucked
for a long time, which you know, hey listen as
(39:32):
a Notre Dame fan. It did bring a smile to
my face. I are you gonna hit the slopes instead
of watching the college football playoff?
Speaker 7 (39:40):
There? Coop?
Speaker 4 (39:41):
I know you did that in the NFL playoffs when
the Broncos got bounced. But are you not even gonna
watch these games? Nothing like New Year's Day? We got.
Speaker 3 (39:51):
We got three games this Saturday. Nothing. No, you're not
gonna flip over watch a little Tennessee. Ohio State have
zero interes. Clemson, Texas didn't even know they were playing
Indiana at Notre Dame. We might have snow.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
Cool oh oh coming up next? Man What a great
little mini anniversary.
Speaker 3 (40:20):
This is
