Speaker 1 (00:00):
Playball.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
It's our number four, our number four. Piping hot in
the pod box, we get to the crux of the matter,
the Pittsburg Pirates. The Injurs have refused publicly to put
Paul Skeins on the trading block. Does that close the
door on him being moved before the July thirty first
(00:22):
trade deadline? Speaking of trades, Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman,
who's hurt right now? His name has been prominently floated
as a potential trade candidate, believe it or not. And
what's the lesson from outfielder Alex Verdugo being dumped by
the Atlanta Braves. We'll talk about that as well, and
(00:45):
who knows what else?
Speaker 1 (00:47):
All of it? Ready to go enjoy It's our number four.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
It's a pirate's life for me? Or is it a
pirate's life for me? Welcome in the beginning of another
hour of the Ben Malor Show. We are in the air,
andywhere playing around as we are your Republic of Sports
talk coast to coast, border to border and beyond on
(01:17):
the mast and extravagantly powerful microphones of FSR AM modinating
live from the roller as we drive the steamroller around
the radio dial from the Fox Sports Radio studios, as
approved by Bobby in Florida.
Speaker 1 (01:37):

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Buying Show b s our lead.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
This hour is from Baseball wh So we'll start out
in Pittsburgh less than thirty days away.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Today is July third, big holiday weekend.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Understand a lot of people taking today off to get
the longated weekend.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
And good luck if you're doing that.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
But we're less than thirty days away from the trade deadline.
Not a lot of time left window shopping, and some
news out about the Buckos. Now we talked about this
in a previous episode of the show. We have an
update to the Mallard monologue of a couple weeks back. So,
after months and months of rampant speculation about the status
(02:39):
of Paul's schemes and his future with Petsburgh Pirates, it
turns out the Superstar picture, according to the latest reports,
is not not on the trading market. The latest report
says there are two players two on the Pirates that
(03:00):
will not be traded. This according to Fox Sports Radio
alumni member former Cincinnati Reds GM and GM for some
other teams as well, Jim Bowden, who said that Paul
Skins and Andrew McCutcheon are the only players the only
ones who are not on the trading block according to
(03:23):
his sources around baseball. He says that one general manager
told him that the relief pitcher David Bednar and Dennis Santana,
both pitchers, are all but gone now. Bednar was in
the minor leagues earlier this year, got some nasty stuff,
but he's been hot and cold, and so they could
(03:45):
be traded together.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
But that's not the story.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Let us discuss the question the Pirates have refused. If
you believe the latest reporting refuse to put Paul Skins
on the trading block, does this close the door to
him being moved between now and the trade.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Deadline at the end of the month.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
So my take on this, I've got the reverse choke hold,
compass and space junk, and we will combuy all of
these things together and we were gonna make the Fetichini
Alfredo is what we're gonna make absolutely So to lead
off here, the door is not locked, all right, the
(04:27):
door is not locked.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
I don't believe it.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
No.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
I actually did some shows when when Jim worked here
back in the day, and he was a Fox Sports
radio host, and he's got obviously got great sources. He
worked in baseball. He still does stuff around baseball and
all that stuff. But I'm not buying it. The store
is open for business. The first rule I learned this
years ago. The first rule of the MLB trade deadline
(04:51):
is to not believe anything that is being said on
the record right any media leagues, any of that stuff.
If the irit brass tell you that the sky is blue,
I would check the forecast.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
I would check the radar to make sure that's the case.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
This is the same franchise that traded Garrett Cole, who
would become the highest pid pitcher in baseball, to the
cheating Astros for a bag of batting practice baseballs and
some some tokens to Dave and Busters.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
So I know everyone's changed.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
They haven't changed that much, and so now they want
us to believe that they are.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
What are they going to build.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Around Paul Skins And he's the second Coming of U,
you know, Sandy Colfax, Bob Gibson, whoever.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Please. This is a classic posturing move, is what it is.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
And that's one of those teams that has always treated
any kind of success.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
Like a contagious disease.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
They're they're not, I would point out, they're not openly
shopping Paul Skins. And the reason they're not doing that
is because they don't have to do that right that
Skeins is stuck in this weird professional wrestling reverse choke
hold where he technically cannot be a free agent until
twenty thirty. Now, as I was told by someone who
(06:15):
works in baseball, the problem for the Pirates is he's
only got one more year before he's arbitration eligible. He's
like pre arbitration right now, and that's where the real
money comes in. So the Pirates, yeah, they could wait
technically and Paul Skeins can't leave until twenty thirty, but
year after year in arbitration, they're gonna have to pay
(06:36):
him twenty twenty five million dollars a year the way
the arbitration market's going. But make no mistake, when the
Dodgers and the Yankees, they come to the door and
they start knocking. They're knocking to the door, or they
they make the phone call and they say, hey, is
(06:56):
this the Pirates. Yeah, it's the Pirates. Yeah, hey, it's
the it's the Dodgers. Can we get our hands on
Paul Skins? Yeah, sure, no problem. They're not going to
hang up on them. They're not going to hang up
on them. And you know, I guess the question is
how many organs are you willing to donate if you're
the Dodgers of the Yankees and you don't shut the
door and all that.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Now someone offers.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Them the Godfather offer, which I'm told is now considered
the one Soto trade the Padres gave the Nationals for
that natitude that that is considered the gold standard. In
my position, a prospect is a suspect until proven otherwise.
So that is my position. I'm holding fast to that.
(07:37):
Should someone make the Pirates that kind of an offer,
then Paul Skins will be getting a new uniform and
he'll be starting at Dodger Stadium or.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
A Yankee Stadium.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
The usual suspects of the big money teams. Now one
of those big money teams also caught in the Abyss
we're talking about the red now third baseman, Alex Bregman.
He's been out for a while. His name, did you
see this? His name has been floated on the trading
market as a possible trade candidate, Believe it or not,
(08:12):
Alex Bregman, who's injury coming back from injury.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
Believe it or not?
Speaker 2 (08:19):
All right, so I am going to buy this. I
believe it, and it's expect the unexpected. Right, Bregman on
a He's essentially on a dummy.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Run in Boston.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
He could not get the contract he wanted in the
offseason because there's a lot of stank on Alex Bregman,
because forever he is a cheating ah stro Right, So
Bregman's on a trial run, and by all accounts, he
was playing pretty well. He likes hitting at Finway, and
(08:53):
the team liked him, and they got rid of the
other third baseman to make way for Alex Bregman. But Bregman,
even if he plays well, he's obviously gonna opt out.
But even if he doesn't play well, he'll still likely
opt out and test the market again. The last time Bregman,
last time Alex Bregman was truly relevant, he was begging
(09:16):
on trash cans deep in the heart of Texas in Houston,
like he was auditioning for the Blue Man Group. Okay,
bang bang, whistle whistle. Now the Red Sox have a problem.
They have a compass that is busted. Their trade deadline
compass is busted. So I asked the question, who are
(09:38):
the Red Sox? Are they rebuilding? They've called up a
bunch of young players. Are they just retooling the roster?
Is that why they got rid of Raphael Devers? Are
they rebranding what they are? Do they even know what
they are? It seems like it's clueless the organization. They
don't know what they're doing there. Like at some point,
(10:01):
you gotta pick your lane, right, It's not stay in
your lane, it's pick your lane.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
And as of now they're just stuck in gridlock traffic.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
It's say, well, we're gonna trade Devors, but then we're
we're gonna hold on to Bregman, but no one. Maybe
we'll trade Bregman two because he's gonna leave. And all right, now,
last thing to the a t L.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
We go just to cross the way and stayed over
a couple of states over.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
There, Van the one legged Bamaman loves the Atlanta Brads. Now,
prior to beating the Angels, the Atlanta Bres made a roster.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Move that caught my attention.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
If you saw this or not, the Braves said bye
bye to outfielder Alex Verdugo.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
They designated him for assignment. Now, Verdugo gets.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Booted from Georgia from the roster to make room for
or steroid cheat Jerkson Profar, whose suspensions finally up. He
cheated with the Padres and got suspended after signing a
massive contract with the Atlanta baseball team. So what is
the lesson of Alex Verdugo being dumped like trash.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
On the side of the road by the Atlanta Braves.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
So the term here designated for assignment, which comes up
a lot in baseball.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
You've been designated for assignment. It is a polite way.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
It is a polite way of saying we have seen
enough of you.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
You're bad, you're fired.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
But you don't say that. Instead, you say you've been
designated for assignment.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
That's how you say it. Now.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Alex Verdugo was once the crown jewel of the Dodger
minor league system, and I remember reading the scouting reports
when Verdugo was in the minor leagues. This goes back
to like twenty eighteen, I believe it was, and he
was described as one of the best pure hitting prospects
in baseball in years that he had swagger and he
(12:09):
had a bazooka, an absolute cannon for an arm. So
he ended up being traded for Mookie Bets. No less, hey,
Mookie Bets, and so the Red Sox are like, well,
we got this great young outfielder, were made up, were
set up for the future.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Well the lesson.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
The lesson is a prospect is a suspect and through
parlas and potential is not promised.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
It's a curse.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Now it's a maybe. You know, it's like, oh, you're
dating is well, maybe I'll go out with it. Was No,
that's a weasel term. It's a whisper. That's how you
say somebody is a prospect.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
We mentioned they could be a suspect. Yeah, they could
also have the star dust or they could just turn
out to be space junk. And in this case, it's
space junk. And that's it. Verdugo. Now, don't don't.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Miss I don't want you to take me out of counties.
He's not terrible, like he's okay. He's not great, he's fine.
And that's the issue. That's the problem. You depend on
these young guys and and oftentimes they turn out to
be a boondoggle where prospects.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
Are not supposed to be just fine.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
If you're one of the top two prospects in baseball
and you're hyped up as a star and you're just
roster spam, something's gone terribly wrong. Verdugo was never that guy.
He wasn't that guy with the Dodgers. He wasn't that
guy in Boston. He wasn't that guy with the Yankees.
He certainly is not that guy in Atlanta. He batted
two thirty nine with the Atlanta Braves. And if you
(13:48):
believe in the winds above replacement stat, the war stat
I had no home runs and a minus zero point
two war which means that he was actually worse when
he was out there than if he hadn't been playing.
So that's how you end up getting fired. Now he'll
he's a carpetbagger. He'll find another opportunity around baseball. He'll
(14:10):
be a fourth or fifth outfielder on another team. How
many jerseys is he going to rack up here? He's
bouncing around. Alex Verduga, have a mediocre bat, have a
pretty good arm and a bad eye at the plate,
and you will travel around Major League Baseball. You're gonna
bounce around. It is the Ben Mahlor Show as we

Speaker 3 (21:30):
Was SO i heard that, Too, yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Yeah WELL i initially people were, like well that's not,

was interesting that that is a.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
Fact, yep that did happen. Supposedly, So, ben you know
what's going on over here In boston in my line of, work,
RIGHT i don't know if you, know, uh if we
have a strike going on it's not my, company it's
another union Company. Republic, ACTUALLY i think you guys have
them over. There they're all over the country in public.
Services they have blue trash. Trucks there's four hundred guys
(22:14):
SITTING uh on the street right now the Last july.
First the track is really starting to build up around.
Here that's the big, news uh news story around. Here
so it's really big In. Boston you, Know boston's a
pretty big area with the union and obviously the trash
is building up.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
Bad it's a, good good union in. Town so how
is that affecting?
Speaker 1 (22:37):
You are you who's picking up the?
Speaker 2 (22:38):
Trash is no one allowed to pick up the trash
that is just piling up on the side of the,
road and all that it's piling.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Up they do a bunch of h. Towns they have
a bunch of commercial with the dumb is and the
business is all, that but a lot bey thinking about
half the towns and half. Commercial right, now nobody's touching.
It but it's a matter of time before its cause
and the real, PROBLEM i, mean you would have to
say By monday it couldn't be an. Issue somebody asked
(23:05):
to get involved, There, well.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
That's gonna be that's gonna be a public health issue
if the trash is piling up and, rotting and that's
gonna become a public health. Issue you know, This this
reminds me of a, Story, danny you'll appreciate. This the
late Great vinskull he told me a story when he
was a kid growing up In, manhattan growing up In New,
york there was a sanitation strike In, manhattan and it
(23:28):
was Around christmas time and then After. Christmas vin he
he told this story.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
Much better Than i'm repeating the. Story but he told
the story about.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
He was a little kid growing up In New york
there was a sanitation, strike and that was in the
days when these giant, televisions the TVs were the size
of like a.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
Refrigerator, yeah And.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
Vinn says when when he was a, kid After, christmas
the people would pile their trash in the boxes and
they'd wrap them in wrapping paper and then leave them
out on their, porch and someone would steal the box
thinking it was like a television or something and it
was actually just filled with trash and, uh and it
was like a way.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
To get rid of good pretty.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
Good, yeah that's many years obviously many years, back BUT
i still remember that the Way vin told that, story
it was it was.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
Wild all, Right, well good luck Got.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
Danny any Any is there any guilt With Lebron james
signing that uh off the end and getting that fifty two?
Millions does he have any guilt to getting out of?
Me he's really fizzled out there over the. Playoffs he
was kind of like a non fact THAT i think
he's Now.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
Yeah well you know the.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Ads that's a rhetorical there's no guilt And, lebron, listen
he probably is underpaid considering how much THE nba makes
and how much revenue they. Make So i'm not A lebron,
fan but he's he's certainly worth the money that he.
Makes and thank, You, danny the Great danny De vito
checking in there from the mean streets Of boston there
where he. TRIED i didn't know. THAT i don't have
to read more about. That the trash piling up that
(25:00):
out a good smelly trash. Door and, boy it's really
getting hot. Too It's july and Then. August, man all,
right let's go to Blind. Scott who's? Next, hello Blind, scott.
Speaker 6 (25:14):
Dude it's Like christmas around. Here you, know we talked
