You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Welcome back in Fox
Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with Me, Mike Carmen, dan
byre in for Jason Smith. Tonight has become to you
alive for the tire act dot Com studios. Tire act
dot com will help you get there on unmatched selection,
fast free shipping, free road hazard protection, and over ten
(00:46):
thousand recommended installers. Tire act dot Com the way tire
buying should be fast moving two hours and we recognize
that there is a huge market for storm trackers. You
thought it was just a dream. People, I listen, I
get it, like I like, I understand, like I but
(01:08):
just it was. It was crazy to think that it
made up more, you know, more than fifty of the
staff because we have you know, high speed chases out
here in southern California that are a lot of the uh,
you know, the you know when we lock in. It's
all the rage when they're when they're on TV. But
you have what one pilot and the cameraman. You know,
(01:29):
there's not like seven different you know, pilots for the
same station. Yeah, I mean, you might have multiple helicopters
in an area, but they're the same. If you've got
a storm that is hitting you know, those different parts
of Oklahoma, you are going to need people in all
those different parts. So it makes sense not to not
(01:51):
to the extent that Monsey thought, because again, no one
would be monitoring the weather desk back at the studio
of the people are on the road. But oh maybe
the pent that they are at or just north of
it does make sense. I'm not knocking it at all.
It maybe one of the things they've got going there is,
you know, on a day where they're not expecting big weather.
(02:13):
Sports guy takes it up. Sure, we gotta weather and sports.
They gotta collide. Now and again let's go maybe we're
gonna talking about Buffalo right and the big question of
can you play in the snow. The exposure of the
Miami Dolphins and people making fun of the fact that
they had heaters on the sideline when it was in
(02:34):
the mid fifties at so far Sean McDermott coming back on, well,
we don't practice in six inches of snow, so I mean,
what what real advantage? But on clothes that is a
legitimate points and it's I've I've made this point for
years when teams would go to Green Bay. Sure the
(02:55):
packers live in that weather. And when you leave l
A or leave Miami and you go to a cold
weather place, it is quite the shock. But it's not
like Aaron Rodgers is throwing passes, you know, in zero
degree weather on a you know, late December afternoon in
Green Bay like that is they're they're in their bubble.
(03:17):
They're in there, you know, dome tent, practice facility, you know,
wherever wherever you are in those cold weather places, you're
doing it all inside. But it all comes back to it, Dan,
you know, to talk to anybody that's played and been
around the game. Uh and for you and I watching
for years, what's the observation. You can play in rain,
you can play in snow. What you can't play is
(03:37):
in yes, yes, right, you want to talk about changing
your offensive plans and schemes. You want to talk about
changing your special teams and what you can do as
a place kicker or a punter, then let's have that conversation.
As for just being cold, put on another damn sweater
and shut up heckers. You know went to Green Bay
(03:58):
last year, you know, go and win that game the
Buccaneers the year before NFC Championship game from Florida, Go
and win in the cold. This is where I get
to make fun of Aaron Rodgers, the greatest regular season
quarterback of all time. And I kicked it in. But
you mentioned Tampa Bay going into Green Bay. Uh. And
(04:20):
you know we talked about open arms, you and I
as fans of music that we are, I mean we
we we love a little bit of journey wherever we
can get it in and a journey was brought up
by Rob Gronkowski in an interview he did with Fox News.
But I mean, if Tom really wanted to, I'm sure
it would be all open arms to go back to
New England. I would just have to say all parties
(04:43):
would want to need it or would need to want it.
But he has the opportunity to go wherever he would
love to go. It's Tom Brady. He wanted to go
home to the forty Niners, I'm sure that would be open.
You wanted to go back home to the Patriots, I'm
sure those doors would be open. If pent he wants
to stay in Tampa Bay, those doors would be wide open.
It's all on him, which kind of echoing something Brady
(05:05):
said the other day. I mean, you know, anything is
possible for three I can't imagine with the same cast
in Tampa that it works. Dan, We've talked about San
Francisco and trying to make decisions. Trey Lance, you have
no idea what he is, right, You've seen practices, but
you really haven't seen him play a full season of
football except for one run in College Rock Party. It's
(05:27):
the flavor of the moment, and Jimmy Garoppolo is the
guy that wins that everybody generally hates. I think that's fair, right,
I mean, I think there are a few people I know, uh,
for a lot of on the network, Collin has been
a backer. I I've always been a Garoppolo guy that
he's better than he's projecting. I'm not saying he's a superstar.
(05:49):
By any stretch of the imagination. But as we've talked
about with Kyle Shanahan, they've figured it out well enough
to win consistently. Is he a guy that you want
slinging the ball fifty times? No, But generally that's not
what the offense is calling for him to do. If
everybody is on the field and participating. You know, you
know what Jimmy g's uh weaknesses at least I'm not
(06:12):
even gonna ask you. I'll just tell you what it is.
It's actually a bad thing. He's too pretty? Is he
is too pretty? That that is true. I will say
that the the Jimmy Garoppolo throw that you will get
once a game like what norld are you doing? What
did you see? Yes? That is that is like the
(06:35):
true Like he's he's not gonna you know, blow your
doors off with the stats and and lead you on
these two minute charges. He's does a good job. But
the thing that I think holds you back is that
one or two throws that he makes a game that
you're just like, where are you going with that? What
are you doing? The you know, on the overthrow of
Emmanuel Sanders in Super Bowl fifty four is the one
(06:56):
that you know, stands out so much. If if he
hit a throw, you know, it's the one throw you
need to make. Can he make that throw? So I
think that's the that's the deal with with Jimmy g
When Tom Brady went to Tampa, it was we need
a guy who doesn't throw interceptions because the guy we
had before just through thirty of them, you know, like
(07:17):
that's that's moments of Jamis Winston and then the terrible moments.
And now we have the question, why does Danny I mean,
Dennis Allen shouldn't have the head coaching job much longer.
But while he hasn't, why what does he hate about
Jamis Winston? Well, yeah, and and I don't know either,
you know of what you know, what's what's going on
in New Orleans, and you know, maybe they need to
(07:40):
move on in a lot of different ways. But with Tampa,
with with Brady coming in there, you know, Brady's not
gonna throw thirty picks and he's not gonna throw twenty
interceptions either. May throw eight, may throw seven, who knows,
may throw ten could actually to match the storm. Jason's Yeah,
but that's twenty, that's twenty less than what Jamis Winston did,
(08:03):
and so that really helps your team. And that's the thing,
like with the Brady thing, like with San Francisco, is
is Brady. Can Brady make the throw that Jimmy Garoppolo
can't when you need it, because it's you know, it's
it's it's why like you know supervisors or you know
people in in you know managers or you know foreman
(08:25):
you know they'll make more because you know maybe some
of the stuff they do is a lot of the
same of what people do around you know, the office
or the factory or whatever. But it's that that's extra
that maybe want to get a little bit more, and
that's what you need at the forty Niners is Jimmy
g and Tom Brady. As crazy as it may sounds,
at a forty niner system may do a lot of
(08:47):
the same things, but when it comes to crunch time
or when it comes to needing to make that throw,
can Tom Brady make that throw? And and I think
that he can. So you have that conversation. Now. The
point about New England is completely like to me, one sided,
and that side is Bob Craft. You know, like like
(09:07):
I think Bob Craft would love it if Tom Brady
came back to I've said it all along. If that's
gonna happen, No, Belichick isn't there anymore? Yeah, And you
know what I I honestly, I don't even I don't
know if I would even agree with that. I think
Belichick is just all for in my opinion, if it
would help the football team, I think he'd be down
for it. But I think that the talk of pushing
(09:28):
it would be totally from Bob Craft. I don't think
that Belichick is sitting there me like we need Tom back,
and but I feel like Bob Craft is like, oh,
it wouldn't it be great if Brady could just wrap
up his career here and we just put a bow
on it. Um, Like, that's where I think it would
maybe come from, and be romantic and thinking about one
last run to the title and then we can get
(09:50):
another Super Bowl. Because at some point Bob crafts, Bob
Craft's gotta be a little impatient, that's the Yeah. I
think Greg Maddard had something like, you know, in the
last week or two about that about like how patient
can you be if you are you know, if you
are Bob Kraft, Well you're looking at a team that's
five since Brady left, right, And and the biggest thing
(10:12):
for me is, and maybe it's not the Hey, Bill,
you gotta go, but Bill shouldn't be the GM anymore,
or at least he shouldn't be the guy evaluating wide
receivers and tight ends. I think we can stipulate to
that because he can coach them up once they're there
and maximize what he's got on the roster. It's just
is he making the right decisions of who he's bringing
(10:34):
in that he thinks he can fit Man mac Jones.
I don't dismiss him, right, Smith will regularly, uh, you know,
because he wants to do the Brady thing as many
people did last year. Right it was the alright comparisons
to Brady where he was in the time continuum whatever.
And we can say right now, is he a superstar? No,
(10:56):
but another guy that if you give me an a
number one and wide receiver going back to the two
a tongue of voloa. Yes, coach believing in him is
a big deal. But having Tyreek Hill and Jalen Waddle
it kind of helps. Uh. And then you go and
look at, you know, some of these other squads Jalen Hurts.
Going back to the Micah Parsons clip we played, he
(11:17):
name checked all of them running backs, tight end receivers,
you name it, and a J. Brown showing up. Come
on that that's the giant gift under the holiday holiday
holiday tree, if ever there was one. So give a
guy like that to the Patriots system. I'm gonna go
out of a limit. Said that Mac Jones gonna look
(11:39):
a lot better. Sure, Sure, I think, and I think
like this is only a story. Well it's a story
because it's Tom Brady, Like there's you know, and there's
always a story about Tom Brady. But it's only a
story because we consider Gronk close to Brady and we
know that he followed him to Tampa. I just don't think.
(11:59):
I just don't think Tom Brady would want to go back.
I thought about it as well, you know, like a
couple of weeks ago, and you're trying to think of
where does this go because it sure doesn't seem like
it's working out in Tampa. Um, I don't think he retires.
I do think now that you know that you know
he and Gazell are divorced, there isn't that aspect um
(12:22):
I think that he'll stay, you know, he'll want to
play one more time. But I think that New England
chapter is closed. I don't think that there's anything to
go back for. I think he wants to find a
new you know, somewhere, don't be in Tampa. And I
just I don't. I don't. I don't see Tom Brady being,
you know, intrigued by a return to New England, no
(12:42):
matter how fairy tale it. Maybe San Francisco, maybe Ye'll
go home Sandy Teo, all of that family members whatever,
or you've got the Raiders with McDaniels. Yeah. I thought
when Trey Lance went down, I said here on the
network that I thought it opened the door for Brady
to San Francis. Still stick with that. I just don't
think No England's the option. Yeah, I mean, just really
(13:05):
quick on the San Francisco thing from the Tray Lance
point of view, because people will always throw up the
what they gave up to go make that pick. That's
in the past. Okay, at some point in business and
in your life, it's a sunk cost, and sometimes you
just gotta let it go. You're never gonna get the
apology you think you deserve. You're never gonna be able
(13:25):
to give an apology enough for maybe something you did wrong.
You maybe never gonna get that moment of clarity or
where things are reconciled. And when it comes to tray lance,
those draft picks are gone, that capital is is out
of the barn. You're not getting it back. So to
keep clinging to that, it's like, well, you know what
they gave up from. It's like, at this point, it's
(13:46):
been a couple of years. It doesn't matter. You're looking
at your team going into three and whatever is going
to be best for the team. Now he gets no
bonus points because he was the third overall pick. It
doesn't matter. He's Dan Byering for Jason Smith on Mike
Carmen as we come to you from the tire Act
(14:07):
dot Com studios. Coming up next, we're gonna take a
chat and a little bit of a detour to the
National Basketball Association with our buddy Dan Woike of the

responder is gonna tell you never try to beat the train.
After breaking. You can take a mile for a train
to completely stop. So when you come to a rail
(14:27):
crossing stop, because trains can't harmon and byer with you
here Fox Sports Radio. We'll ask Woike, did yesterday's loss
to the Celtics really embolding you that the Lakers could
become something? Or do you just shrug and say it's
still a loss. We'll ask him next. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike

to go to get the grandma's house. We're now joined
on the hotline as we are each and every week.
(15:31):
Dan good friend of the show, a man who loves
a nice Portillo's hot Dog. It's a fan of eighties
basketball cards. We laugh at the Bulls together and Chicago
Sports regularly. It's our buddy, Dan Woike from The l
A Times at dan Wicky Sports is where you find
him on Twitter. Read his latest l A Time's got
(15:53):
a big profile on Darvin Ham, and I'll start there, Dan,
are you a believer in this team now after the
big fight against the Celtics. Um, I mean believer? I
don't know. I'll tell you this, like I mean, I
think there's there are two different questions there, right, Like
I think in general I believe in Darvin Ham, you know,
(16:16):
and I think in my reporting and stuff like that,
I think, you know, knowing what this guy has been
through in his life, um, from a stray bullet, you know,
through his face at the age of fourteen, to like,
you know, nearly getting swallowed up by the crack academic
integon on Michigan to bearing friends who did um too,
(16:39):
barely playing high school basketball. Because you know what I mean, Like, yeah,
it's an incredible dancinating I mean, why it's a wild story,
like one of the things out there. At one point,
like when I'm talking to about like Davin just like
took a study like it's a movie, bro, And I'm like, yeah,
probably let's make it an article first. Um. But but
(17:01):
but you know, so I think, like, you know, you
do see elements of you know, I think this is
what you say about the best coaches, right, is that like,
you know, their teams take on their personalities. And I
do think that you see a a level of calm,
a level of you know, confidence, and sort of where
the Lakers are right now. But I mean I still
(17:24):
think at the end of the day, the roster of
the roster, right, and um, this team needs to get better.
They need to I think make probably multiple moves to
really ascend in the West. But I mean, I don't know.
I think I think I was looking, you know, just
now and there's you know, in the last ten games,
(17:45):
there's three teams in the West, two or seven and
three or better, right, the three teams at the top. Um,
there's eleven teams that are somewhilar between six and four
and four and six and only one team that's three
and sid you know. So, I mean like it is
a very sort of muddled mess in the middle of
the West. And I mean I could have been saying
(18:07):
this three years. Yeah, I was like, you know, I
think the Lakers part of their plan is that, you know,
give us into a playoff series with Lebron, James Manson,
David's healthy and you know, good luck. What do you
make of the Chris Haines report about the Lakers interest
in Kyle Kuzma and how much could that help? I mean,
he's on their list, I think, you know, I mean,
(18:27):
I think they've got yeah, you know, from what I've
from what I've heard, you know, they asked the price
there's going to be high, and you know, I think
there is a certain element of sort of like you know,
how much crow are the Lake is willing to swallow
to start to like undo elements for the lest of
West trade, you know, explicitly right, Like you know, I
(18:47):
mean they could have I mean, they could have had
Kyle Kuzma, not for nothing, but I mean he was
on the rust, you know. But I mean I think
it does sort of underscore sort of like one of
their needs is they did another offensive player you can
create from the wing. And look, I think and you
saw this in the bubble um. You know, who's can
(19:08):
who's can guard a little bit like when he's really
locked in. Um, he has sort of the size and
the athleticism for it. I would say, Like my kind
of concern with it is, is he comfortable you know,
taking sort of a Jeremy Grant style step backwards, you
know what I mean, like going you know, from a
(19:31):
very supportive role with the Lakers right um, into a
more prominent one with the Wizards. Like is he willing
to like go back and play a more again supportive role.
Um hard to say, you know, I'm not. I'm not sure,
but I mean I think it does sort of speak
to kind of what I'm a docked for the Lakers
(19:53):
up first. Um, I don't think it's the rust of
lest for trade. I think certainly that stuff though that
they are considering, and I think a move that they
would potentially make down the road. Um, but I think
it seems to me that like it, you know, something
in the you know, eighteen million dollar range based on
(20:15):
a Patrick Beverley kind of none type back its plus
picks is like kind of where the Lakers had is
at right now. Um, but it's gonna be tough, right,
Like that's tough shopping and what makes even you know,
messier for the Lakers guys is that they're pretty limited
and the protection they can put on these picks. Right,
(20:35):
so because of the Steppian Roads, here will go boring, guys.
I'll do my best to make it to make it
real exciting when you see you you know, you know
if it's exciting when people start talking about ted steppian Um.
So basically you can't trade first round picks right in
consecutive years. Like that's why you see pick slops um
(20:56):
and stuff like that. Is like is a way around that? Well,
show kind of for the Lakers thinking is they view
their two kind of remaining assets in the draft is
the twenty seven first round pick in the twenty nine
round pick. The problem is is that once you start
protecting like the pick and maybe it becomes of twenty
eight first, that means you can't trade twenty nine and
(21:19):
you can't really protect twenty nine because it's illegal to trade.
It's too far on in advance. So, you know, do
you want to trade and non protect the first round
pick for Kyle kuzma Um if if that doesn't get
you to the you know, to the top of the West,
like that that's cost um, you know, and I think like,
(21:41):
is there a scenario in which you would trade you know,
if you're like, let's say the minding heat and you're
looking for for more firepower, would you trade a four
top twenty first round pick for Kyle Kuzma or top fifteam? Probably,
you know, but I think that it hits a little different,
right if that pick is on that you end up
(22:01):
end up coming in the top three or god forbid
is even worse. Dan Wicky with us our guest the
l A Times is where you read him at Dan
Wicky Sports, where you find him on Twitter. Uh. He's
a guy that understands the snark and commentary of this
show and plays in perfectly, which is why he's the
best friend at the show. We need to get together
and and and have some hot dogs and and real
(22:25):
real quick on the Portillo's front. Ye um. So one
of the things that this is how hardcore I am.
But I never go there with like the intent of
getting dog. The calculus voice for me is do I
want to order fries or do I want to just
get like a hot dog as a side? Oh? I
like that. Yeah. We usually just opt for both, Dan
(22:46):
and then hate ourselves the rest of the day. You know,
can I can I jump in here? You don't, you
don't know this story. But do you know that once
Harmon tried to send you a d M on Twitter
and he sent it to me because we share the
same first name, and it was about Portillo's not like
it was like it was totally on brand, Like that's
(23:08):
what it was about. So you're talking about hot dogs
even in m it's it makes the world go round.
But Dan, if you if you want to join Woiki
and me on our sojourn and then and then we'll
do a podcast about you know, the glory of Chicago
style hot dogs and uh well they're chili and their
crinkle cut fries. It's it's all good stuff except when
(23:29):
it goes down the gullet and then you start thinking
I need to go for a five mile hike immediately thereafter. No,
that's good. Yeah, starts get that walk going long way.
I get a miner's little helmet light on, and the
way we go. All right, now, let me ask you this,
does the Laker Brass, the the group in the room
(23:49):
that has long been reticent as you did the calculus
on the trading and protecting the picks. Do they feel
emboldened by the fact that blank them picks is blown
up so quickly on the lands? Uh oh, that's a
really good question. Um, you know, I think they're I
think there's been sort of a built in residency on
that front, um since the beginning. I mean I don't think,
(24:12):
I mean, I know there's been you know, sort of
this notion that maybe because of the age of our stars,
maybe because of the injury concerns with Anthony Davis, that
you know, is this really the right time to like
be taking out like a payday loan essentially on our
draft feature And um, you know, the answer was mostly
(24:35):
been no. I will say this, I mean I think that, Um,
when you talk to people within the organization, they feel
like that's changed. Um that you know, the Anthony Davis
they've seen, um for the last month, the Lebron James
they've seen for the last two and a half weeks.
You know, I think the win in Milwaukee, and weirdly
(24:56):
he probably you know, even the losses to the Celtics
and the Sixers, Um, which are you know, weird games
and weird losses, but like you know, are are really
two made free throws away from being Laker victories. Um,
I I think, I mean, I think they I think
maybe maybe they're like, you know, maybe we're better than
(25:17):
we thought we were. And if that's the case, then
I think that there may be a little more willing
to put at least certainly one of those fictions to play, um,
you know. And then if it's the the right guy
and the stance they've taken along on this right is
like needle moving, like you know, all star level players, um,
(25:40):
you know, for that's the that's sort of the two
first Um, I don't know who that guy is. Um,
I don't know if you can get a guy good
enough for only two first when you look at the
hall for like Ganovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert specifically, right
like you're trying to imagine Brandley Bill for two first
compics based on what you know other teams have gotten
(26:01):
in that and that sort of situation. But I mean,
that's that's kind of their calculus right now. But but
I mean I think that they are thirst year for
a deal than they were four weeks ago when they
maybe weren't assure as how what they could be Dan
the big last one for me. The big story once tonight, Uh,
(26:22):
Steph hurts his shoulder and the lost for the Warriors,
um I said earlier in the show, Mike and I
were talking. It may not be l A Rams esque,
but it just doesn't seem like this title defense is
is just going their way. And now you add this
to it, how because it's Steph, Like I can understand
the Clay thing, and you know, Draymond punching his teammate
(26:45):
is just whatever. But this seems like, Okay, now there
may be something to it. How do you think this
team manages even if it's just a minor injury to
curry shoulder. I mean it I kind of think and there,
I mean there might be a scenario which is is
like exactly what they need to kind of like jolt
them into some sort of urgency, to jolt them into
(27:06):
some sort of reality. I mean, obviously these out for
you know, a month, that's not good for them, you
know if it's extended. But like you know, get Jordan
pool lunch track, like let's get clear to find roles
for the comingas and the Moses Moodies and stuff like that.
I mean, the Devin Chens of like like let's figure
(27:26):
out kind of who these guys are and what they
can be to this team. And I mean, to me,
that's it's wild to think that, you know, losing Auto
Porter and losing Gary payton Um would do this to
a team. But in some ways that you know it,
it shook them a little bit. They they expected certain
guys to to step up um and they've been inconsistent.
(27:49):
This has been sort of the the repudiation of the
two timeline plan, right, is that the guys that should
be ready aren't. And but but I think, you know,
you see an injury like this, guys are close to
sort of step up into bigger opportunities. Maybe this is
a this is the stretch that Jordan's Poole, you know,
put together the type of consistent basketball that he that
(28:12):
he did for most of the last season and and
and was rewarded handsomely for that. Maybe this, you know,
unleashed his point Draymond in a more engaged way. Um.
You know, I think that that to me is you know,
sort of I mean, but the guys, it's also it's
like it's hard to imagine it's worse, right, I mean,
like this team is awful, Like it's just awful and um,
(28:36):
you know, has limited options. I will say, like I
mean I shouldn't say has like limited in house, but
it does like sort of tried everything. Um, they are
in really good trade position, you know. Um I think
despite them the way the wiser and thing is gone. Um,
(28:58):
you know he certainly moody. That would have value if
you're a team looking for young talent. Um, they've got
you know, picks, they've got young players, they've got some
movable contracts, Like could they be in the mix again,
like if if some sort of star player would have
become available. The market isn't there yet, But I mean
they do sort of have a view like them and
(29:20):
the Clippers kind of the teams in the left with
like that ace up their sleeves like some sort of
like big trade if there's one to be made, And
so that's kind of worth watching. But um, it does
certainly feel like a team that needs to figure itself out,
yeah really quick. Lastly, we see the Clippers taking care
of business against the two Wolves. Um, is it time
(29:41):
for me to start you know, buying back in that
these guys are gonna play together a while? Or do
I still have to hold my breath and wait and
see what's under the tree on Christmas morning. Well, Clipper
Arrow got injured last came. How about that? Oh my goodness,
they're not at full strength. I will say I I
think that they are. Um, you know, they've got tremendous
(30:06):
depths and like Kawhi Leonard, is only going to get
better the more you place, you know, right, so this
might be like a get in low moment for for them. Um,
but I mean like the Lakers, um, like any of
these teams aging superstars, you know, like even Phoenix and
Chris Paul. Like, I mean, you are probably signing up
for a month stretch down the line somewhere where you
(30:30):
know a strange path is like making you play your
hair out. Well, I'll enjoy it while it lasts. At
Dan Woiki Sports where you find them on Twitter, l
