Sports Radio. Where's night goes? I have no idea why
the Macarena. Maybe because there's no more Narco. Maybe that's
what it is. Greetings and welcome inside. Happy Thursday, The
Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. Fresh
off a NCAA tournament win for his alma mater, let
(00:47):
me say it again, Northwestern with a win in the
NCAA Tournament, something I never thought i'd say. And I
can't believe you're not eating baked potatoes for dinner the
entire night after beating Boysey State seventy five sixty sec. Well,
I made potatoes as part of a dish I did today.
It took a nice sirloin tip roast and made that
(01:09):
sort of there's beef sandwiches and food here in the
kitchen in the Fox Sports radio studios. So some nice
little finger linked potatoes and pearl pearl onions as part
of the dish. It really turned out nice. I'm really
proud of it, and really proud of the Northwestern Wildcats
for taking care of business defensively and for the guard
play standing up tall against Boisey State. Yeah, you get
(01:32):
all your smack talking it now because Saturday you're going
to have UCLA. So get it all in that, get
all of it in now, get all of it in,
everything in now, everything in now. Well, in the end,
you've got to be a realist and you hold out
hope that you can come up with a strong effort,
that the defense does some wonderful things and that you
(01:52):
hit some shots and you get the production that you
did out of your veteran guards. But look, the reality is,
you see, LA, assuming they win tonight, will be favored
and up in Sacramento, it'll be a nice, nice atmosphere,
no question about it. Do I predict. I wanted to
do one of your things and just put Northwestern all
(02:12):
the way through the bracket. But I'm a man of buddy,
but I'm a man of integrity. I couldn't. Yeah, come on, man,
you would have been so great. You should have done
two brackets, one of integrity and one where you have
your team winning at all. That's what I do. Well, there,
there is a problem with some of these scoring as
it's been done. As I look at our bracket updates
Arizona and it's telling me I was wrong. But well, yeah,
(02:33):
you know you were definitely right, so was I. We
were wrong to pick Arizona. I don't think anything wrong
with that. Were to pick Arizona. That never happened, buddy,
That never happened, buddy. You know me me at like
noon our time, when I watched Virginia melt down and
give that game way, I'm like so many people at
Virginia's their dark RS final four team. And then I
watched Arizona go out and nuggle. Yeah. I had Arizona
(02:56):
in the championship game. Yeah, yeah, I had Arizona Ino
and and get the bound championship game. Yeah. But I
had this morning. You know, you get all excited, you
run your errands. I did a nice long walk with
the dog and watched them tear down part of an
old historic restaurant and stuff on the Redondo Beach Pier
(03:19):
out there, the cranes and everything and bulldozers. So that
was kind of fun. And then I get back and
it's tip off. So as you as you go through
your paces, you've got multiple screens going, and you're watching
these games, and they're not running away and hiding. In fact,
they're looking less than stellar. And all right, we're coming
down the stretch. They're gonna pull away now, right, I mean,
(03:39):
I know they're not a team Virginia specifically, h that's
gonna score a ton of points. Their whole ideas will
grind out and then finish the job in the final minutes.
And well that never happened. And then if I could
read some of the social media postings that I witnessed thereafter, guys,
don't tell, fired, do not tell, saying we will all
(04:02):
be fired forthwith based on the reactions of people who
hadn't watched them play at all this year, who picked
them to go far, and then watched their brackets and
blue hand. Uh. Here is the sound earlier today of
millions of brackets, including mine, imploding all across the country
and the world, as Arizona once again fails to live
(04:24):
up to expectations Tom more than blow up a bracket
right now. And it's a lot fumble. I had the Jet,
I had the Jets actually executing the snap in a handoff.
Oh no, no, you didn't have that right, You blew
that one, buddy. Well, at this point they're still not
fielding a complete team because Aaron Rodgers is still a
(04:44):
member of the Green Bay Packer. Well, they're intended, Zach Wilson,
they're intending to. I wonder if we're gonna get an
Edwin Diaz called next. Oh you know what you know
at Frostburg, you're going to hell off that he's that
guy got hurt, But he got hurt at the moment
the year. Look, we're news people here with news people,
and we'll get to that is and that is a
piece of news that rocked the baseball in the world.
(05:07):
It had a bunch of people getting all mad indignant
about the World Baseball Plassic. How dare they? Meanwhile, you
got players that are having the time in their life.
And then went asked which is more important to a man?
They're like, oh, yeah, the World Baseball Classic. Go after course,
it's more important. Of course they are, because it wasn't
their teammate that got hurt. Of course, yoh no, card's world.
We got played World Baseball Classic. But before we get
(05:31):
to that, all right, let let's let's deal with the
with the hearts breaking across. Speaking of getting people mad,
let's go to it. Let let's let's start the healing
for everybody, suckers like me that had Arizona go into
the final four, almost studies. He shoots the second free
bro back of the rimill good Pella Larson the rebound.
The horn is gonna sound. The Princeton magic is alive
(05:53):
and well. The Princeton Tigers upset Arizona fifteen over a
fifty nine. Fifty five is the final store. The Tigers
brill advance to the second round. Ryan Radkey on the call,
so Princeton moves on. Arizona goes home. The free throws
made by a guy whose brother had a great day.
(06:15):
Caden Pierce makes the two free throws that helped win
the game. Well, he's actually the brother of Alec Pierce,
Colts wide receiver who just saw bump up in his
importance because Paris Campbell signed with the Giants earlier today.
So it's a big day in the Pierce House and
the Colts brought in a big time cornerback. Baby. Yeah.
(06:38):
Now here's one thing before I get to the big
takeaway from this game. I don't know about that foul
call to put him on the free throw line. That
was like a missed backdoor layup and it looked like
he got leaned into a little bit, but he still
he kept his position. He went up and he just
missed the shot and they blew the whistle. Yeah. I
wasn't a big fan of that. I think that that
was kind of a no call. I didn't I didn't
(06:58):
like that with I said, Addio, you really in a
call that was that the referee that blew the whistle
was behind the play, so he didn't really see. That
was a tough call. I'm not not making his use
for Arizona because look, they let everybody down. I mean,
I want everybody to know, Arizona let the world down tonight,
and like every everybody deserve to lose. They let a
(07:20):
team that shoot like four for eighty from three point
range beat them tonight. Okay for twenty five sixty percent
from three point range. They shot forty point six percent
from the field. Did the Princeton. Tiger's hell. They only
took five free throws as a team. Yeah, and they
beat you. You deserve to go home and walk and
do the walk of shame. Yeah. No, that you should
(07:42):
add people with bells wherever you go for the next week. Shame, shame, Tara, No, no, no,
they they owe the world. But here's the biggest part
of this now is that this is where Arizona is
now at a place nobody wants to be, and they
are called Arizona. A fit. Come on, wherever you in life,
it will always be better then Tucson. Name that movie, Uh,
(08:04):
Arizona is now in a place no as it one
of the most underrated comedies ever. Hamlet two takes place
in Tucson. It's hysterical, ahead of its time. Steve Coogan
is a star. He plays this drama teacher at this
high school that writes Hamlet two and they perform and
they want to perform it and it's hilarious. You only
like it because it has noted Jets fans. Skylar Aston
(08:26):
in there. No, no, no, it's it's I can't even
tell you how Elizabeth Elizabeth Elizabeth Shoe playing herself in
the movie and and and like she's she's struck on
hard times as an actress, so she's a nurse and
like he runs into her in the hospital and asked
her to be in the play Hamlet two is and
that's a line nurse, He says, wherever you go in life,
(08:48):
it will always be better than Tucson Um. But Arizona
is now where they never want to be. They're on
my official never again list teams I will never again
pick for any thing, no matter what a list I
just put the Raiders on just last week, I will officially.
I told you I'm never gonna fall for the Raiders
ever again. I'm not doing it. No matter what happens.
(09:11):
They're always gonna raider. Arizona College basketball. Same way, not
gonna fall for Arizona. Every Look how good Arizona is.
They finish on a big up swing, they win the
Pack twelve Championship, they beat UCLA. I had them in
the final four. Nope, never again Arizona, which is also
on the list with USC football never again picking USC
football for anything, because they're always going to find a
(09:32):
way at the end to blow it. If they can't
underachieve during the season, they'll underachieve at the end of
the season. So those are now three. Well that in
Brazil soccer in the World Cup. Never picking Brazil again.
Talented they are. No matter how many guys I have,
I'm never picking Brazil. So it's Raiders, Arizona, Basketball, usc football,
Brazil never again. I'm never picking those teams again for anything.
(09:53):
All right, I'm just making the official list because I'm
just gonna start a website that's all sorts of random
lists that we come up with. So make sure you
said that to me as we progress. But I'd like
to as we like we often do, we we equate
things to movies and television, and you use the Hamlet
two to kind of set things up. But the reality
(10:15):
of it, if you were to say, from an esthetically
pleasing scenario, what movie equates to a fifty nine fifty
five first round matchup where both teams shoot forty two
point one percent or worse? Oh man, what's one of
the worst? I wonder woman too? Oh okay, yeah, yeah, yeah,
one of the padre couldn't save that one? Uh yeah, no, no, well,
(10:37):
if he was a Mandalorian, it would have been great.
Like if he's walking around something he's a Mandel. That'd
be pretty Can you imagine how bad it would have
been without Galgado? Yeah, oh man, I'll tell you. Because
everybody was excited. The game was terrible, and that's kind
of what happened, just like Wonder Woman too. Everybody was excited.
The movie was bad. We move off. Everybody checked the
box and decided, hey, we're we don't even need to
(10:59):
watch this game. They back to sleep, or they went
to the gym, or maybe he actually got a little
bit of work in I'm just glad Wonder Woman too
and didn't end Pedro Pascal's career because it really could have.
That could have what? But now I mean now, now
he's everywhere, He's Mandalorian, he's last of us, he's doing
everything well. And he was in that movie with Nick Cage,
which was, yeah, really one of the most underrated films
(11:19):
of the last year. As we broadcast live from these
tirerac dot com studios, tirac dot com will help you
get there an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road
hazard protection, over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirac dot com
the way tire buying should be. Yeah, we celebrate Pedro's
entire catalog. Never again, I'm never picking Arizon again. Not happening.
(11:40):
Everybody never doing it, never doing it. Well, it was
I used to do that for fantasy football purposes. Every
year we got got you got god, here's Michael Vick,
here's this guy, and and now well the Raiders have
Jimmy Garoppolo, so they make the list. Can't ever again.
That's a list you don't want to be on. Man,
you don't want to be on that list. Arizona to
USC the Raiders in Brazil, you don't want to be
(12:02):
in that list. What about the Clippers, You're clippers take
him every year? No, no, I didn't take that. I
didn't take the Clippers this year. I told I gave
him the first time in nine years. He didn't take
I No, no, I gave you Nuggets and the Grizzlies
this year. And how smart do I look? Right? I
just said, okay, the first time in nine years, he
didn't take them. Yeah, how smart do I look? I
mean I look like a basketball genie. Well you did
with the Nuggets until the last two weeks. Then they
(12:23):
look up. You do know the Lakers are back? Right? Okay? Well,
maybe maybe they are maybe, but right now, I like
Harmon always says, the show is tonight, right, so I
look like I look like a genius tonight. I'm at Gee.
I told you I cut Denver and Memphis and where
what does it look like? Well? This is uh, you know,
they're sliding. Yeah, but nobody else is rising up and
(12:43):
Jack can come back? Is early? Is the twenty en
nobody else is. Nobody else is suddenly catching fire in
the Western Conference. Nobody else is doing it even though
the Lakers were trying to be back. I mean, the
Clippers have now won four in a row. Yeah, no,
that's great, five and five in their last ten. But hey,
let's let's go to the four or noneous No, it's
(13:04):
it's tough. But the Clippers, the Clipping, Clippers. The Clippers
might be close to my never again list, But no, no, no, no,
you're gonna jump back on the bandwagon once they get
their own arena. Given the number of toilet instead Steve
Balls putting in there, I mean you're gonna like that
facility just for that reason alone. Oh yeah, yeah, listen,
if you do stuff like that, then yeah, I'll be
(13:24):
a big fan of yours. Yeah, you put enough bathrooms
and make like aisle seats really wide. I'm a beat. Yeah,
I'll be a big fan. I look, people have bigger
asses than they did like when Wrigley Field and such.
Nothing wrong with a bigger ass, No, I wasn't I celebrate? U? Well,
the pastures is a big deal. I'm an ass man.
(13:45):
I am all right. It's been documented for years. Twitter
at how about a fresca, Mike, it's swollen down The
Jason Smith Show with my best friend my Carmen. Meanwhile,
in Day one of the NCAA Tournament again, never again,
UCLA is right now shutting out North Carolina Ashville seven nothing,
Zach Charbonne with a touchdown run, Mike Houston and Northern
(14:09):
Kentucky twenty two to twenty. Houston with the lead late
in the first half, Tennessee on top of Louisiana twenty
three nineteen. But hey, we had a four thirteen, we
had a two fifteen? Could we get him one sixteen?
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
(14:30):
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
Starting with this song early aren't we. Okay, well it's
appropriate for tournament time, okay, okay, Well, really, any time
of day, any day of the year, we're all trying
to rule our own little parts of the world. All right,
(14:52):
all right, that's maybe the sandwich. Neat's on your plight.
You're gonna dominate that part of the world. Okay, cup
of coffee? Sure? All right? Are you just naming items
in front of you, Mike, I think he is. That's
all he's doing. Wow, noises. I gotta beefieda and some coffee.
So today we had already two big upsets. Four seed
(15:17):
Virginia losers. Get to that in a second, two seed Arizona.
Never again am I picking Arizona? Never ever again? Say
not ever, you go down. We could have another upset.
Brewing one sixteen. Houston leads Northern Kentucky twenty eight twenty
seven with about a minute to go in the first half.
(15:41):
This is your first rank maybe best team in the
entire tournament, Houston Cougars. And they lead by a point.
And it is UCLA having just as much trouble right now.
I mean, I really I fear them right now. They
lead North Carolina Asheville eighteen to five. Yeah, let go.
(16:03):
I mean they got out that two touchdown lead. Yeah, no, no, no,
Zach Charbonne with those two quick touchdown runs that that
really helps out UCLA. Yeah, I got them on the
board right away. I'll tell you what though. With Houston,
I mean it's like they cut off Sampson's hair. Oh wait,
it's samp It's Sam Sampson, Sampson Sampson. Yeah. But it
was pretty good though, wasn't it. I mean, Houston, we
have a problem. You want to talk about brackets imploding.
(16:27):
I mean, that's gonna be like the end of The
Kingsman when all the heads were exploding. Oh yeah, who
spoiler alert. Let's that's like a decade old. At this point,
we have, you know, we we have some things we
have to take care of today. The first we gotta
do is we just did it. Um How would Burman
announce Arizona getting upset by Princeton? Oh boy, we got
(16:48):
to do it right, We got to Oh sure, we
do well. I mean it is also a tradition unlike
any other. I mean I've been waiting all day excitedly.
Given the channels, I've been watching the action on for
our annual tournament of how much can we be fooled
by what we think we've seen? And don't forget to
watch him practical Jokers after this. Hey, hey, we do
(17:11):
have True TV or Not TV two rounds of it
coming up tonight. Oh yeah, we do, buddy, you can't. Yeah,
if we didn't die, I didn't know what the voice box.
Oh yeah, yeah, No, we're good, man, We're good. No.
I figured if he didn't lozenge or whatever laxative up
like doctor Ornberger was telling him to do yesterday to
get True TV or not True TV in I was
(17:33):
going to boycott the show. Oh no, we're rolling on
it tonight. Man. I was going to call in six
saying I need I needed a day because I was
let down. But how would Berman announce Princeton defeating Arizona
in the NSA turn. I mean, this is just a
warm up because I'm just gonna kill you with Virginia
getting upset earlier today by Fermant. I mean, I'm gonna
(17:55):
kill you with that. But you're just a taste right now.
And t J Princeton apparently too much of a dry
heat for Arizona today. TJ Arizona just had a grand
Canyon of points too much to overcome to no J
(18:16):
when Grand Canyon did on a Princeton team that scored
fifteen t J quicker than you can say Hoover damn
Arizona's out of the NA tournament DJ, No, there you go.
I mean that was better just a warm up number
five the way, that's just that's just a warm up. Man,
that's just a warm up. But I'm telling you, next
(18:38):
hour I got I it was. It was the most
fun thing today. Now my voice was back to getting
close to normal, which I was excited about. But getting
to do true TV or not TV? And how would
Burman announce the upsets in the NCAA tournament? Oh man,
that's the best. That was the best that I was
in my having to face your motivation I was ignoring
every day. Maybe you had to walk the dog. Now
(18:59):
that you have a dog, you're getting a little more
exercise and getting out there, getting the cardio going. Uh
And during that what do you do you marinate ideas
for the show, especially when you want to go down
that burmin rabbit hole. Hacker is going to be proud
of you. Hey, too soon, too soon, too soon, too soon.
Oh and tight, sir, we gotta get rolling with uh
(19:21):
one shining moment? Here for some music. Here, we gotta
get rolling with that. Okay, let's replace all your Tears
for Fears with Tears one Shining Moment. Yeah, but isn't
that the same message? And that song is better? No one? Wait, wait,
what are you talking about? No one? No one thinks
Tears for Fears thinks NCAA tournament. Tears for Fears, not
(19:41):
one person. No no no. But in terms of ruling the world,
I'd rather rule the world that one than one. Shine people. Man,
People think tears of Fears and they go, uh yeah,
here's music for me being contemplative in my car in
a gray day at four o'clock in the afternoon. That's
Tears for Fears music. Where am I in the middle
of winter when I'm driving around and there's no snow
and the holiday are over and I'm wondering when this
(20:01):
spring is coming? And then Tears for Fears comes on
and I feel good because I'm wearing a turtleneck and
I have a mop head of hair and I'm wearing
a big, long black coat. Now I feel good about
listening to Tears for Fears. No, no, no, no no, no, Well,
and that's where you fire up the elvis. Why can't
every day be like Christmas? Because then you're in the
holiday spirit all along. You're you're generous with your time
and with yourself and your presence, and you're there for
(20:24):
your fellow man. Uh So, while that is happening, and
I'm good getting because I don't want to play your
Tears for Fears again. You don't want to hear it again? No, no,
I'm sure I am positive would you rather hear No,
I'd rather not hear any of those things. But if
you had to choose between about Kate Bush, I'd rather
You know what I'm you know what I'm doing. I'm
going to find a way to put an official embargo.
(20:45):
It's my new favorite word. I'm gonna put an embargo
on you playing the Butt Fumble and Tears for Fears.
It's gonna be an embargo on both of those things.
You could really hate this movie, but you can't put
out your review of it until it wasn't goodman ego.
Uh no, no, no, you're thinking of argo, argo, argo
blank yourself? Yeah, no, no, embargo and embargo is what's happening. Well,
(21:10):
I even know what that word means. Yes, Embargo means
you're not allowed to use something, So there's an embargo
on it and embargo there you know, there is actually
a movie from two thousand and ten embargo. Actually, I
actually learned that word at ESPN when when um, when
I was a production assistant and like certain video would
come in that you're not allowed to use. It was
usually for a fight, like if there was a big
(21:31):
fight you had there was like twenty four hours that
you couldn't use footage of the fight. You can only
use still photos right exactly, Like oh my god. Yeah.
So they would send the video for us to able
to use the next day, but there would be a
big sign that came in front said video is embargoed
until you know noon, you know, Sunday or whatever. It is.
Embargo and embargo Like oh, embargo, Like that's a good word.
(21:52):
I like embargo. Embargo is a pretty good word. And
you listen to them. I'm a big fan. Where did
you play? Well? No, no, no, that was you kidding.
No no, they were a huge financial repert. Yeah no, no, no,
I would Ken would have gone Sue, I mean, Bob
Aaron would have owned Disney if that was the case.
They always had several days where they were you can
still order it, still watch it, because they did that
(22:13):
with the WWF two. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, oh w
was a big one. Hey, yeah, it's Saturday night, but
don't worry. You can get it Sunday at noon and
Sunday at six and Sunday night at nine. So we'll
let you get all four showings of it if you want. Sweet.
But the other upset happening earlier today, it was Virginia
in an incredible meltdown that I still can't believe. And
(22:36):
here's how it sounded from Kevin Harlan over mid Court,
his right wing deep, God shut Virginia, I should care
their first nine years John Saddick Westwood, when I thought
we had to Kevin Harland call an amazing turn of circumstances.
(23:00):
The final minutes where it looked like Furman had the upset.
They were up for a couple of minutes left to go,
and then with twenty five seconds to go, you had
Virginia was up four and key Hey Clark, who was
a senior and has had a great career. It made
one of the greatest passes in Virginia history four years
ago that helped them tie a game against Purdue in
(23:20):
the tournament. Just a phenomenal pass that was what he
was known for. And now this play, this really bad
decision that he knowed it out. I felt so bad
for him, and I also felt that this is what
shocks me is that of all the teams, if you
told me everybody in the tournament, which team is is
(23:41):
the least likely to have a play like this happened
at the end, where they completely melt down because they're
not coached well enough, I would as I would have
put Virginia because that's that's not a Virginia play. I
watching Virginia under Tony Bennett. This is not how they play.
They have things buttoned down. The way they played defensively,
they know how to do what to do with the clock.
(24:01):
He had four guards out there at the end, knowing
that when we're up by a point and there's twelve
seconds left, we got to inbound the ball, control the ball,
and get to the free throw line to shoot right.
So we had the right lineup out there, everything out there,
and then Clark And this is what baffles me on
it is that he's looking down court and he's got
all kinds of decisions to make, and any one of
(24:22):
them would have been better than trying to throw the
ball all the way down court. He sees all five
defenders in front of him, right, there's two guys on him.
There's two guys that are few feet away, and the
one guy all the way down court. He has a
player open on the wing, he has a player opened
up near half court. He could have held onto the ball.
He could have called a time out, he could have
done any of those. The fact that there was still
a time out in the offing here is and instead
(24:47):
he throws the ball down and it gets caught up,
and look the big three. I can't say enough about
it because he hadn't made one. He was oz for three.
I think most of the day he was for three
or for four, and he still takes that three with confidence.
But I Virginia, they just don't make plays like that.
They just don't. And to see that play happen, I'm
looking at it going, that's how Virginia is gonna lose, man.
(25:10):
I mean not that they don't lose early in tournaments,
because look, they won the tournament they've lost in the
first round as a one seat right, so they do.
But they just don't play that way, and they came
completely unglued at the end when every everything was in
place for them to be able to say, Okay, let's
make sure this doesn't happen. They were a whole slew
of things that could have happened for them. Calling a
time out would have been the right call because they
(25:31):
had the time out. Okay, let's call the time out.
Let's get a better play. This isn't working, or there's
a guy wide open. How do you not see it?
I mean, I get the default too. If I throw
the ball all the way down court, maybe it's gonna
wind up it because I got two guys down there
and they're gonna get the ball, or it's gonna be
knocked around for a while. The time will tick down
and we're gonna win the game. But instead he just
(25:52):
doesn't throw it far enough and it gets picked off cleanly,
and there's a big pass and pickies is three. I mean,
it was, it was. It was watching it in slow motion.
It was, oh no, and you see it happen, and
I'm watching Clark walked to the bench and I go,
he's gonna think about that play every day for the
rest of his life, every single day, because likely his
career is at look, his career is any He was
(26:13):
a good player, but not a great player. Maybe he'll
play someplace, or you know, maybe he goes overseas, maybe
he gets into a G league somewhere, whatever it is,
an NBA camp, But he's gonna think about that play
every day the rest of his life. And I felt
so awful for him because he made such a great
pass four years ago that helped them tie a game,
and I mean it, it was an amazing play, great
presence of mind, and he throws that and it's just
(26:34):
there are just so many things that he could have
done to make that pass not happen, and he just
did the one thing you can't do, and that's I'm
turning it over right there in the middle of the floor.
You can't turn in the middle, not I trying to
get the ball out to the side, and they grabbed
it right before the baselines. He turned it over in
the middle of the floor, and I'm just watching it unfold, going,
oh my good. And then of course they're all discombobulated
(26:56):
on defense and they wind up with an open three
and Virginia goes home was a four seed and ruining
a lot of brackets on the way. I'm stunned that
it was Virginia. Stunted. Well, you give up your dribble,
you get yourself trapped in the corner. You forget about
the time out because you don't have the bench able
to yell at you loudly enough through the crowd noise.
All right, there's there's no uh, nobody that can get
(27:18):
that to you. The fact that you can't call it
elsewhere is silly to me, because everywhere, every other rule
allows you to call from ninety feet away in a
lot of these games, like way he called it back there,
it's like, well, not in the play, but you know
he doesn't get the time out, makes the throw, as
you say, probably looking to get the ball tipped, bounced
(27:41):
around whatever, or it's a hail Mary pass. More or less.
They only had eight turnovers eight eight and a half
turnovers per game this year, did Virginia. But we know
from a grind it out perspective, not a team that
generally historically right, that's the personality, don't run and hide,
put up a ton of points grinde, you out play
(28:02):
defense in this case, he had Furman hung around and
you gave him one last shot. And look, you'd love
his career arc to have gone the other way right
and have the terrible moment as a freshman, because then
it gets excused now you're just a freshman. Yeah yeah, instead, yeah,
you know this is the way you go out and
you know, balance and in the force and all that stuff,
(28:25):
but just a big time shot, right. Got to give
credit to Firman executing there at mid court. The player
that came down with the ball, didn't panic, found the
open man, and he had look the guts to take
the shot right that he didn't look around, he knew
the urgency of the situation. We've seen this so many
(28:45):
times in the NBA and coming down the stretch in
the NCAA where guys are unaware of how much times
on the clock. Hell, I go back to the Northwestern
game that we watched in the Big Ten tournament, right
where you get the ball and he's got time to set,
but instead does a all right, I catch and release
without really getting myself set and they miss and they're
(29:08):
eliminated from the Big Ten tournament. Now, they get the
win tonight, and I will harp on that as long
as I can because it's a very short lived thing
that I get to celebrate. But for Furman, a huge shot.
And for those that thought Virginia was for lovers and
were loving them on their brackets, it's a wreck man.
That relationship has been torn us under. Be sure to
(29:29):
catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike
Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific, Fox
Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmon, And we'll get back to the NCAA Tournament.
Big stuff in the NFL coming up in a couple minutes.
But today the result that we knew was happening, because
(29:50):
you know, Mets Edwin Diaz done for the season. No
after getting injured celebrating Puerto Rico's win last night over
the Dominican Republic, you knew couldn't put any weight on it,
jumping up and down. Something happened. He felt it was awkward.
He already had surgery. Typically recovery time is eight months,
(30:11):
which unless they play a Game seven of the World
Series on Thanksgiving Day, he's out for the entire season.
Now I want to say this because I want to
get I want to make sure everybody knows A how
much I don't like the WBC the way it is,
but B I don't want to get rid of the
World Baseball Classic. Okay. The thing is I have always
(30:33):
not like the WBC because it's an extracurricular event. It's
just like for any other player that doesn't that can't
put motorcycle riding or skiing or anything else because oh
this you could wind up getting hurt and missing time.
We can't have that. Oh no, here's a baseball event
that we love. So you guys can go play in this,
and you're gonna have players go from zero to one
(30:56):
hundred miles an hour and after they've been in camp
for two weeks, right before one hundred and sixty two
bleep in game season. That makes absolutely no sense. It's
never made any sense yet. This does only do the
World Baseball Classic. Okay, So one of two things has
to happen. Number one, which is what I would love have.
The World Baseball Classic. Don't have stars in it the world. Yes,
(31:17):
I hear other countries love it. It's awesome. Okay, so
let's let people play in the WBC that aren't professionals
that have big time responsibilities elsewhere. That really because these
teams Major League Baseball means a lot to a lot
of people. So if you're gonna play it early in
the season, have players who aren't in Major League Baseball
do it, right. That's the best way to say, we
(31:38):
can still have the World Baseball Classics. They're still excite,
we're still watching it, but you don't get to see
this star as well. A big deal. I think every
single team would rather have their star playing. And anybody
right now today who was saying, oh, it's okay, let's
have it, it's such a big deal, would change their
mind in a second if one of their best players
got hurt was missing the season. Mike Trout loves a WBC.
(31:59):
Oh it's rain, it's great, it's great, it's great. If
Shohail Tani got hurt and was out for the season,
is he still saying it's great? Of course not. Mookie
Bets is saying how great the World Baseball Classic is? Why?
Because Kershaw was told, no, dude, you can't go man, No,
you can't go to the World Baseball class Well, there's
something about getting insurance on his back if some even
passed back eeonomies. One of his teammates got hurt in
(32:22):
the World Baseball Classic and we're out for a long time,
he would say, yeah, no, no, don't ask about the
World Baseball Classic. But I love it. I love it
because it's not them, right, it's not them, And it's
the Mets who spent a lot of money in the offseason.
And everybody hates the Mets, and they're all jealous and
they're mad because now players are gonna cost more because
Steve Cohen is spending money. So it's all about that, right,
they would all change the way you're making it all
(32:43):
about the jealousy of the Mets. No, part of it is.
Part of it is all the Mets. Yah, may have money,
they'll go buy another closer, right, But it's true. Play
the World Baseball Classic if you're gonna do it, now,
have players and aren't major leaguers play? And if you
really want to play it, well, then let's have a
break in the middle of the year. Let's let's play
it in Let's have it then, why not or have
(33:05):
it at the end of the year, right, we have
the playoffs go on and concurrently with the World Baseball Classic.
That way, if somebody gets hurt, it's the end of
the year, and hey, you have a long time off
before spring training comes back, so there's many things you
can do. I'm not here to say let's get rid
of it, but I want to get rid of MLB
players playing in it when they're not ready to play.
And this is in February and March and all these times.
(33:25):
Because I'll tell you this. You can't sit here and
tell me that this injury would have happened anywhere. No,
this was a fluke and freak injury that happened only
because of the World Baseball Classic. That's why it's a fluke. Hey,
you know what, maybe he should have acted like he'd
been there before and not celebrated like a jackass. How
about how about how about we do that for hot
takes it or tonight. I wish he would have I
(33:47):
wish he would have said, hey, no, no, no, I
got a pitch for the Mets. Don't jump up and
down and done that. You know, we still have other
work to be done. How about that? How about that wide?
I wish he had done it. Hey, you know, at
the end of your first year Discover credit cards automatic
double all the cash back you've earned. That's right, everything
you've earned doubled. Seriously see terms and check it out
for yourself at Discovery dot com slash Match. Perhaps some
(34:09):
of that cash back for Cohen going and get himself
a new closer. But I mean that's they got excitable
and a guy got hurt. It's a fluke injury. It
shouldn't mean that we have to vamp everything cause it
happened at the World Basela. This was an extracurricular event.
And the only reason it's because Baseball said yes is
why we're having it. Baseball would say no to anything
(34:29):
else guys want to do, but we'll say yes to
this because we liked the World Baseball Classic. Why I
never liked. Guys have gotten hurt before, not just Mets,
but other players have gotten hurt toward acls, all these
things because you're going too hard, too fast. Well, then
show up to camp two weeks earlier, ramp up, listen
earlier than you used to. Haven't. We just don't have it,
Just don't have it. It's every four years, man, Just
(34:50):
don't have it. Just don't have it. I hate we
got to listen. We'll have more on this and more
in the biggest NFL story of the day coming up
next right here for the Tie Direct dot Com studios,
new closure time, no horns,
