Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, baby, let's get
it on.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
It is a beautiful Friday here in the Fox Sports
Radio studios. Jason Smith off tonight. He decided he needed
to rest ahead of more Jets action over the weekend.
So we tag in one of the Hall of famers,
one of the legends here in the Fox Sports Radio family,
our guy, the stinking genius himself, Arnie Spander. Arnie, how

(00:51):
those Dolphins looking today?

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Wow, mister Harmon.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
How are you dominating?

Speaker 5 (00:56):
Thank you?

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (00:57):
You know?

Speaker 4 (00:58):
At you?

Speaker 7 (00:58):
It does bother me that the Dophin lost nineteen three,
So I'm not gonna just shrug it off, but I
thank goodness it's preseason.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Did you get any reps?

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Though?

Speaker 2 (01:07):
I mean there were. The list of guys not playing
was like.

Speaker 7 (01:10):
Oh my goodness, there was one team that had like
it was like two pages long.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yeah, I mean it was.

Speaker 7 (01:17):
It was absolutely ridiculous, by the way. I know, we
have a lot to get do. Can I just say this,
I know you and Jason brought this up the last
couple of days. I just thinking of the people in
Maui with the fires going on. My heart just goes
out to them. You know, I living in Los Angeles,
you know, during one time you make the trip out
to Hawaii and then then you go to Maui and
I remember, I don't know if you remember this, Mike,

(01:39):
the shirts you have, it had the year that you
were on the island, so it's saying like Maui's seventy
nine or you know, Maui eighty. And I just, you know,
saw an old picture of that and I saw the
devastation there and it's just it's just it just pulls
it the hard strings and I just it's just terrible,
and you just think of all the people well out there.

(02:00):
So I just wanted to bring that up. It's just
horrible what we're seeing out there right now.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Well, I'll have to make it a point as soon
as I'm able to actually get out to the islands.
Try to support as I can, something that you all
can do. If you've got an extra dollar or two
that you have unaccounted for in your discretionary income, of
course they can use every bit of help possible. All
the devastation, lives lost, lives affected, so much devastation. It

(02:26):
is truly heartbreaking. And with social media you get different accounts, now, right, arn'tie.
I mean it used to be here's the news feed
of it, and now here's the Here we are on
the ground, this is what happened to my home, and
people choking back tears and trying to talk about the
events of these last few days. It really is something

(02:49):
to remind you to take some humility with what you have, yeah, right,
and the good fortune that you have, and be thankful,
as we try to do every day, and you know
we do so with varying levels of success, but certainly
in times like these, you know, thoughts and prayers are
one thing, but anything you can do in terms of physical,

(03:10):
physical and capital support to the area, please remember to
do so as you can, Arnie. You know it is
something we try to wrap everybody with the big hug
here for our four hours entertainment information you and Plank
on Sundays and then whatever you come in for. Jason, obviously,
I'm blessed and excited to have you in because there's

(03:32):
so much to discuss across the great sporting landscape. Right now,
We've got a huge ceremony here in Los Angeles. As
you mentioned, you know, having tormented Laker fans and been.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Part of the part of this world for a long time.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
I'd be remiss if we didn't kick things off just
with a remembrance of the life, career and the impact
of a guy named Fernando VALEZUELA huge video segment that
they put together showing his impact. Number thirty four hasn't
been worn since nineteen ninety but officially getting retired today.

(04:07):
Twenty five players in Dodger history warr it. So at
some point we'll play a trivia game, unless we won't.
But it is just a huge event, and I know
the pride and excitement for the huge Latino base here
in Los Angeles and Dodger fans of every race, color

(04:28):
and creed. I mean, this is a big, big event,
a long time coming, and really just a big celebration
across the city.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
You know, Mike, I gotta tell you this.

Speaker 7 (04:36):
I was about seventeen years old, I think it was
nineteen eighty when Fernando made his debut with the Dodgers,
and I got to tell you this. I was also
at Michael Jordan's last game when he first retired.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Did you save any of the tickets or anything? No?

Speaker 4 (04:51):
No, no, I did not.

Speaker 7 (04:52):
But I got to tell you there's nothing like I've
seen before in sports, and that includes the Michael Jordan
retirement than what was going.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
On in Fernando Mania.

Speaker 7 (05:02):
I was not even a Dodger fan at the time,
but man, you couldn't help, but people were running around
getting tickets to games, trying to figure out when Fernando
was going to pitch.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
He was so dominant.

Speaker 7 (05:14):
I mean, if you couldn't go to the game, you
wanted to be outside the stadium. If you couldn't be
outside the stadium, you were gonna watch it on TV,
listen to it on the radio. Whatever it took. You
wanted to hear and see what Fernando was doing. You know,
you talk about what Shoe a Otani's doing this, you know,

(05:35):
the talk on him not one tenth of what it
is with Fernando Mania.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
It was.

Speaker 7 (05:41):
It was absolutely incredible just to be around Los Angeles
at the time and to see everybody just lose their mind.
I didn't even know his number was not even retired
till recently.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
I'm it's pretty amazing, right it is. You see some
of that stuff just got to go to the wayside.
It's like, hey, wait a minute, we probably get back
and that as we flowed through. We're broadcasting live from
the tyrack dot Com studios. Tyrac dot com. We'll help
you get there an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free
road hazard protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tyrac

(06:13):
dot com the way tire buying should be. And of
course they got to celebrate the return of a future
Hall of Fame Lefty and Clayton Kershaw last night. They're
dominating once again as we go to the final six
weeks of this regular season and then the big event
against the Rockies tonight with Fernando Mania.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Did I give you what? Stott on Hulk Hogan's birthday.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
By the way, Fernando Mania is running wild once again
in Los Angeles as Hulk Hogan celebrates his seventieth from.

Speaker 7 (06:45):
Fernando was name the opening day starters a rookie after
Jerry Royce was injured twenty four hours before the scheduled
start that year, Well, he went out to shut out
the Astros to nothing that year. He started the year
eight to zero fives e array of zero point five
zero through their first eight games. You have never seen

(07:08):
dominance like that since then by any pitcher.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
To go eight.

Speaker 7 (07:12):
Games with the e array of zero point five zero,
and well it could have been more than it starts,
but eight decisions there. What an incredible start. Hello major
League Baseball, Hello Dodger fans. That was just incredible what
he opened up with.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
You know, well not to mention that he replaced one
of the greatest mustaches in baseball history and Jerry Royce.
Go back and look at some of those old baseball cards. People,
you'll know what I'm talking about. All right, Arnie, let's
shift gears the National Football League six games today. Yesterday
we had two. Well we'll go back and see what
we can glean from that a little bit later. But

(07:51):
all eyes circling to the Green Bay Packers Cincinnati Bengals.
That was the big national game, and people wondering what
am I gonna see from Jordan Love, Love takes fakes
the handoff to Dylan has time Lofts left side of
the end zone.

Speaker 8 (08:06):
Tops Iffore we go home, tots Ub Promeo, Dobbs left
side of the end zone, made the playoffs. Sidney Jones
and the Packers on the board, nine yard touchdown pass,
six stuff in Green Bay.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
The unmistakable voice of Wayne Larevi on the Packers radio network.
Jordan Love on the first series had a terrible woeful
atrocious missed him by a country mile a third down pass,
so I could see it on social media already everybody
and all the Aaron Rodgers stands were out and full
of fact. Comes back the next series, some penalties and

(08:44):
field position work in their favor. A secondary that was
a bit, I should say, a step and a half
too slow, Dobbs finds himself open and you get the
touchdown pass. Packers blowing out the begles in this one,
but seven to ten, forty six yards and a score
for Jordan Love. One of the guys that we're gonna
highlight and keep an eye on, one of the big

(09:05):
storylines as this NFL season gets underway. On the other side,
I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge that my guy
from Northwestern, Trevor simeon Ye was the starter of there
fifteen to twenty six for him, but nobody cares because
none of the starters started there. So we moved back
to the Packers. And for Jordan Love, I like that
he shook off what was a terrible throw right. They

(09:25):
gave him a couple of easy ones early and then
on the third down crossing pattern just let him way
too far. But you got to get those early reps.
We watched it yesterday as everybody did their handwringing about CJ.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Stroud.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Like iron sharpens iron, you gotta go get out onto
a field and you're not going to be blowing everybody
away right away. But for Jordan Love, I gotta imagine
as soon as that ball left his hand, put a
nice arc on it, and Dobbs came down with it,
there was a giant exhale, a giant exhale from him
and a lot of fans.

Speaker 7 (10:00):
Oh yeah, I'm sure you know for a couple of
things in this. First of all, I'm one of those
guys that actually enjoy watching the preseason and try to
take something away from it. If a guy has a
bad game, I do take it with a little bit
of a grain of salt. It's like, okay, in his preseason,
and if a guy has a great game, I'm first
to go and have the knee jerk reaction. Y, yeah,
you got him in the super Bowl. And again, well,

(10:20):
first of all, congratulations to Sean Clifford.

Speaker 4 (10:23):
He's in my preseason Hall of Fame.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
That guy was. He was.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
He was fantastic.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
That guy was terrific, all excited about and he was good.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
He was good.

Speaker 7 (10:32):
So I think he probably got himself a job with that.
But as a Jordan Love, I probably give him about
a C plus. Really didn't go downfield, nothing crazy, he
didn't have the touchdown seven to ten, maybe an incomplete
he did what he did. Okay, a couple series. I'm
starting to think that he's because I saw a practice
throw that he had in the end zone for a
touchdown in one of the practices. I'm thinking he's probably

(10:56):
a little bit better that I'm giving him credit for.
But I'm not all ready to to say Okay, this ready,
this guy's ready to be a big star in the NFL,
and it's going to be a boom and the and
the Packers are going to be good. I'm starting to
think maybe I've underestimated maybe the Packer offense, and not
because they put so many points on the board today,
but maybe they're They're not gonna miss Aaron Rodgers as

(11:17):
much as much as I thought they're gonna be. So
I'm curious to see how they do offensively. But I'm
still out on the Jordan Love situation there.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
Adam Statovich the offensive coordinator there, uh second year for
him last year. A lot of things played into that offense, right,
and Aaron Rodgers didn't show up to offseason world.

Speaker 4 (11:38):
You you had a lot of.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Young wide receivers and if you look at the difference,
I mean, go back to that opening game, right he
had Dobbs or was it Watson drop pass that would
have been the touchdown right off?

Speaker 7 (11:51):
The joke a big deal about what drop pass for
the rest of it. It's like, well remember that for
the rest of our life.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
But I think about it, right, it's a game of
inches and perception becomes reality and what did it do?

Speaker 2 (12:03):
It's set up a narrative.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Look, I've been talking about it for a long time
in terms of playoff failures and disconnect and discord between
Rogers and the coaching staff, you know, sending the field
goal unit down when you're down eight against Tom Brady
and the Buccaneers, thinking you're gonna get the ball back.
You didn't, right, you know, all of those things, you know,

(12:24):
instead of fighting to stay on the field, much like
Russell Wilson last year in that debacle against Seattle, Yeah,
I'll see the field so we can kick the super
toe sixty three yarder. How dumb was that? But with Rogers,
what it became, as soon as there was some disconnect
and some inefficiency in the offense, it started to become
in vogue to go and.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
Attack him right right.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
It wasn't this was no longer about Covid and his
thoughts or whatever. Now it was all right, we can
go after him on the field.

Speaker 7 (12:53):
But they deserve such a big deal about that drop pass,
like like he.

Speaker 4 (12:57):
Never won that throws those wide receivers again, Well.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
But that's just it. You didn't put in the time.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
And as the season wore on, those guys acquitted themselves
pretty nicely as solid wide receivers. So I look at
it going into this year, and one of the big
beneficiaries of all of Aaron Rodgers nonsense last year was
who else Jordan Love. That's a lot more reps with
the first team and these young receivers that he got
because Rogers didn't show up. So that's an extra off season,

(13:23):
as a quote backup, where he got a lot of work.
So you don't you come into this camp running right.
You're not playing with.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
The twos like you were two years ago.

Speaker 3 (13:33):
So now you move this move forward, that continuity, that
flow is going to be a bit better. You got
the dual backs that are there and Dylan and Jones,
they're ready to roll with another for another run. And
then that defense, to my thinking, underperformed last year. I
think people are truly sleeping on this squad.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
R So you like that.

Speaker 7 (13:52):
But as a boomer, bust on Jordan Loved and so
you think he's gonna be.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Like, I'm up, I'm up, I'm in. Yeah, I could
get him on the back end at the top time.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
I'm not ready to go ahead and put him in that.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Well, they're going to run the ball a lot.

Speaker 4 (14:03):
Yeah, you're right.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
So now it's a question if we're talking about just
inflated numbers. No, he's probably not going to get the
huge inflated numbers, but it's going to be a fun
watch and they're going to be a tougher out, and
I think everybody's given credit, because, you know, the deification
of Aaron Rodgers is one of the more nauseating things
I've seen in recent memory, and I've got to deal
with it with Smith here every day at Stinking Genius one,

(14:26):
where you find him on Twitter slash x.

Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith's Show with Me,
Mike Harman Know Jason Smith. Tonight instead it's the Dolphins,
Love and Arizona Wildcat himself, Arnie Spanner, the.

Speaker 4 (15:52):
Stake twel let's go. I can't wait to go to
the Big twelve.

Speaker 3 (15:55):
Yeah, we'll get into all that mess, some details about
the PAC twelve. Now you got Oliver Luck popping his
head into things.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
It's it's a weird world.

Speaker 7 (16:06):
Where were they when when it was still the PAC
ten and you know, or before UCLA and USC bailed,
where were they making comments?

Speaker 4 (16:14):
Then it's hutle too late.

Speaker 3 (16:15):
Now, well, they're all happy and thinking that the world
wasn't going.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
To change, right, exactly right.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
You think the checks are going to continue to cash,
And that's the general rule of thumb with a lot
of folks. Nobody prepares for the thing that's just around
the corner. The inevitable, you know, snowstorm and all of
those things that come and find you, especially you up
there in Vermont.

Speaker 6 (16:38):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
Welcome back in It's Fox Sports Radio. Fox Sports Radio
by Carmen and Arnie Spandard. No Jason Smith to night,
getting himself ready for the Jets next preseas. He's in effort,
no doubt or a Hard Knocks Part two or whatever.

Speaker 4 (17:03):
That the way.

Speaker 7 (17:04):
I don't need to see anymore of the preseason. Russell Wilson,
his career is o v er. The guy played into
the second quarter and he's got nothing left.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
Well, we'll talk about him. Yeah, well we'll terrible.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
Let's kick that for ten minutes, all right, all right,
and we'll get into guys that you're throwing into the
trash bin. That's fine, and for me it's fun because
I did that before he left Seattle. So last year
was no great revelation to me. And now Sean Payton
has already a well he said his piece and said, look,
you know, everything was fine with Russ. In other words,

(17:38):
I'm a wizard. If it doesn't work, it's all on RUSS.
Now we'll get to that in ten minutes. At the
end of your first year, Discover credit cards automatically double
all the cash back that you've earned. And that's right,
everything that you've earned doubled. Seriously see terms. Check it
out for yourself at Discover dot com. Slash match, you
are high on the Detroit Lions. If I'm not mistaken,

(17:59):
Arnie Space, Dan Campbell and company. What if I were
to tell you that Jason Smith's favorite culinary delight has
entered into a partnership with the Detroit Lions for this year.

Speaker 4 (18:12):
And that would be what McDonald's.

Speaker 3 (18:14):
Okay, So when there's an interception in the game, fans
have the opportunity to get a buy one, get one
free Big Mac.

Speaker 4 (18:24):
Ah nice.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
Yeah, they also have a giant bundle box with the
Giant Lions logo and everything on it. UH already available,
but now they're just branding it with the Lions. But
a couple of Big Mac, some McNuggets, some fries, and
it's got the Lions theme. Box almost looks like a
giant lunch pail as you flow through. So, uh, I

(18:46):
think it's time for Smith to just move to Detroit
for the next vacations.

Speaker 4 (18:50):
Why does he vacation up there? We've figured that out.

Speaker 3 (18:53):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know his his wife's family, extended
families in the well.

Speaker 4 (18:59):
Yeah, of the family's gonna have to come visit me.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
That that's kind of one of always I've always tried
to encourage him, and really from the outside looking in though,
I mean, you know this, Arnie, it's a lot easier
to poke the pair and say no, you're in southern California.
They should come to you, right, you shouldn't be going
to Michigan for the holidays, but with your wife.

Speaker 7 (19:20):
Man, Yeah, there's nothing like free food giveaways when when
you're a fan of a team. People love that stuff,
especially when you get like free tacos or or or
or free gifts like that. So the two for one
works out good. I bet they they'll probably get a
lot of those, you know.

Speaker 3 (19:37):
Yeah, I mean we work in sports media, so you
know as well as anybody free food, and I mean
obviously working for Fox Sports Radio, as long as I
had I could take something that's you know, the weak
old bagel put it on the counter. It's gonna get eaten. Oh,
of course that's for the night's done. Someone's gonna put
it in the microwave. Someone's gonna do something to doctor
it and make it edible once again.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
But the Detroit Lion.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
Outside of the Jets, probably the second favorite would be
America's team coming into the twenty twenty three season.

Speaker 4 (20:08):
You mean, people are kind of like jumping on.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
Jumping on a bandwagon and suddenly deciding they like them.

Speaker 8 (20:13):
Right.

Speaker 3 (20:13):
Having watched Dan Campbell and some of his crazy press
conferences a year ago, I'm on Ross Saint Brown, who's
still walking around like he's Dustin Hoffman and Rainman citing
the sixteen guys.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
But you gotta find your motivation, buddy.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
I guess, man, I guess Michael Jordan's still saying guys
can't take it.

Speaker 7 (20:35):
Well, Michael Jordan's one thing, you know, he's another. My goodness, man,
it's not quite the same comparison there, Mike.

Speaker 3 (20:42):
You know well, but we all find our motivations. When
you get on the microphone, I'm sure you've got someone
in mind. It's like, yeah, look at this, I'm gonna
dominate this four hours, including that power hour alongside her.

Speaker 4 (20:53):
I was gonna do it tonight, but you never let
me drive, So.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
I'm like, oh, you got that's out the way.

Speaker 3 (20:59):
Contract obligated to slide into the second chair here Arnie
here on invitation night. Uh Well, what's funny though, is
with the Lions, everybody's been wishing and hoping for a
long time, going back to Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford,
and we all celebrated the career of Barry Sanders and

(21:19):
they had some pretty good players alongside him at times
during his tenure. But this is the first time that
we look at the division. We talked about the Packers
a little bit earlier. People don't believe in Captain Kirk
in big moments, and nobody likes my.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
Bears like Minnesota.

Speaker 3 (21:37):
We'll get back into the NFL in earnest starting with
Denver as we come to you from the Tyraq dot
Com studios, the voice of Arnie spand you're out by Carmen.

Speaker 2 (21:46):
