(00:29):
Welcome inside our three, The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmon.
Steve Desag're in for Mike Harmon. We're live from the
Tirack dot Com studios tirec dot com. I'll hope you
get there at unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road
hazard protection and over ten thousand recommended installers tirack dot
com the way tire buying should be. Well, we get
(00:50):
to the NBA and I'll tell you what Steve O.
Right now, I don't know the teams know what they
want in the Western Conference. You know you want to
avoid the Denver Nut. It's right, the one team you
want to avoid anybody else. I think the Lakers and
the Warriors and the Kings and the Sun that they
all feel like if we have to play the Thunder
(01:10):
or the Tea Wolves. We're fine, We're fine, but we
don't want to play the Nuggets, obviously the defending gym
in the first Drake don't want to play them in
the first round. But now that the Nuggets lost tonight
and technically their third, three teams are tied for the
top spot in the West, it's gonna come down to
the final day of the regular season. I don't know
what teams want. I mean, I don't know. Do you
(01:31):
want to keep trying to get up higher in the
playing round if you're the Lakers and the Warriors, because
you want to maybe get to the seventh seed, knowing
you could wind up playing the Nuggets. Do you want
to just stay in the ninth and tenth spot hoping
that okay, well one of those other teams is gonna
win and the Nuggets might finish second or third and
we don't want to face them, will be the LKB
(01:53):
in the eighth seed. I mean, I don't know. I
don't know what you want in the Western Conference right now.
It's just it's it's become so crazy. The Nuggets losing
to the Spurs tonight was so unforeseen and it's gonna
have so many consequences, how you know, Because now suddenly
the Lakers looked like they were in for it, right,
they were gonna the Lakers and the Warriors, one of
them's gonna finish eighth most likely if they get out
(02:15):
of the playing round, and waiting for them would have
been the Nuggets. Number one. You don't want that because
you're going home early now. The Nuggets might not finish first.
In fact, I think the odds are against them.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Vanessa, That's correct.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
So now do you back off and say I'm okay
squeaking into the eighth seed and playing the Thunder. I mean,
this is where we're at right now, with one day
after tonight left in the regular.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Season, identical records for the top three in the West,
the Thunder, Timberwolves, and the three seed. At the moment, Nuggets,
the defending champions. They're all fifty six and twenty eight.
It marks the first time in the history of the
NBA that you have three teams with one game to
go all had the same record. All three have a
chance to get the one seed in their respective conference
(02:56):
going into Sunday's finale. No NBA games on Saturday, then
every team plays on Sunday. So, in other words, in
the Sunday finales, if those three teams all win, standing
say the same. If they all three lose Sunday standing,
stay the same. And the Nuggets are a three seed.
In order for Denver to move from the three seed
all the way up to the one seed on Sunday,
(03:17):
they would have to win and both of the others
lose on Sunday. So yeah, it's not statistically as likely
that the Nuggets get the one seed now after somehow
they lose by a point tonight at San Antonio.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Yeah, and I'll say one thing, because with so much
drama around all eight of these spots, right, as Steve said,
any one of three teams can finish first. Every team
six through ten can see their spot change, right. The
only you want to try to avoid them at this point.
It's just whatever will win, and however it shakes out,
it shakes out. But the team you want to avoid
is the Nuggets. But I'll tell you this, I would
(03:52):
bet you if you asked any of the any of
the teams, either in the playing round or who we
finish first and second, they would say, how do you
feel right now? Do you feel a little lucky that
you don't have to face the Spurs, because all of
a sudden, in the last few weeks, the Spurs have
become a team that's taken out a couple of really
(04:12):
good teams. They beat the Nuggets tonight in the game
the Nuggets had to win. Wemby has become Look, he'll
be one of the top three overall players in the
entire league by this time next year, we'll be saying,
who's the most talented guy? Is it him? Or or
is it Giannis? Right, Like, that's where we're gonna be at.
The Spurs have won some big games, and the Spurs
have won some games that you didn't think they were
(04:33):
going to win, and suddenly now, yeah, they're only won
thirty games, But remember they started out so poorly. They
started to be kind of a five hundred is is
type team. And with a guy like Wemby and nothing
to lose, Yeah, I think there's a lot of teams going, yeah,
pretty happy. Wenby's not going to be in the playoffs
this year, probably the last year for a while I
have to deal with a playoffs without Wemby in it.
(04:53):
But for this year, yeah, I think We're pretty happy
that's that.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Usually we finish up with West teams playing West. East
teams played playing East the final weekend, but it's San
Antonio hosting Detroit on Sunday afternoons. So sadly I wish
we would see. What you're talking about is that somebody
who really really needs a win on Sunday is going
to wind up playing the Spurs. Not so you're gonna
get San Antonio with a record of twenty one and
(05:19):
sixty against a Detroit team that's fourteen and sixty seven
in fac Detroit had lost six in a row until
they got to win at Dallas tonight. And I'll add
that Dallas was sitting starters and committed twenty turnovers. You
couldn't recognize anyone on their court anymore than you could
in the Memphis game tonight. Boston was sitting starters tonight,
but they wound up killing Charlotte, which has a similar
(05:40):
record to the Spurs. Once we get to those finales again,
everybody is playing on Sunday. The good news for the
Denver Nuggets in a three way tie for first is
they get to play at Memphis, a team who's players
on the court. We don't recognize who have thirteen players
on the injured list right now. The bad news is
the Nuggets, even with win, they are going to need
(06:02):
help on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
So we'll have more on the NBA coming up later
on this hour as we see some of the dust
settle with the two big games left Sacramento Phoenix, the
Pelicans and the Warriors. Will have some more. But quick
update from Major League Baseball. The home run party at
Dodger Stadium is continuing for Nano Tatist Junior has just
gone deep at two run shots. So now, as Finn
(06:26):
Scully would say, seven's are wild. Seven to seven in
the seventh. There have been I think, Steve, how many
homewites like? There have been all four each fourteen home
runs tonight total.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Eight guys only updated when the Padres hit one eight
total eight.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Home runs tonight in this game. Everybody gets a ball.
Uh so this game seven to seven in the seven?
Speaker 3 (06:45):
What's up with that? Jay?
Speaker 1 (06:46):
What's up with what?
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Are you only giving updates when the Padres hit one?
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Because I only seem to be talking when the Padres
hit a home run?
Speaker 3 (06:53):
No you're talking?
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Yeah? You you jumped in before he could say anything
going do. Tony just hit a home run. He just
hit a home run.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Well, that's breaking news.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
I didn't have any time to jump in because you
wanted to jump in and say it.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
I can update the game from Oakland, where the A's
we mentioned were averaging six thousand in home attendance and
went one and six at home that first week. They're
back home tonight with almost no hitting. They had a
one nothing lead top of the ninth against Washington and
gave up a solo homer. It's A's one Nationals one
top of the tenth.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Boy in the A's looking to put some distance between
themselves and the Astros.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
The ALS's Houston lost again tonight.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
But today we saw the sho hey Otani epe Misuhara
scandal just continue to operate at warp speed as An
epe Otani's ex interpreter turned himself in and was free
on a twenty five thousand dollars bond. Before you think, boy,
twenty five thousd that's nothing for a guy that stole
(07:53):
sixteen million dollars. Well he didn't even have to put
up the twenty five grand he was He was released
on an unsecured bond.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
If he behaves, he's good, you know.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Otherwise, also he doesn't leave town, he's okay. But if
he leaves town or something or tries to you know,
get out or whatever, then he's on the hook for
twenty five thousand dollars. So ebe surrendered to law enforcement.
Was released shortly after the twenty five thousand dollars bond.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
At his corner parents in LA. Today.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
This is Steve now. And look, I don't want to say,
you know, there's a thumb on the scale for this story,
but this has been done so fast.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
They even said because of public interests, that's why it's
going fast. I see why, But there's.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Lots of other things in public interest that they say.
All this investigation is still we still have some time going.
Why do you need so much time? Why is so
much time they can do that This thing is going
to be done in like a month, right, like all
of a sudden, From the beginning of this story to
the end is going to be like a.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
The defendant even said that today that he hopes that
it's over quickly. They're the attorney for the defendant, I
should say, and I think this is part of what's
making it go is he He is not in the
least ipe fighting this and in fact wants it to
get over quickly. And so when the judge orders him,
for example, to undergo gambling addiction treatment, the attorney says, yep,
(09:11):
got you on that one. We're already, We're already planning
to do that, thank you. Since it is related to
a sports betting case, he's charged with bank fraud. But
I think that's part of the equation here. It's not
just the fame of Otani who's the victim in this case.
It's the fact that the guy who was caught knows
that he's in the corner. He's not getting out, he's
(09:31):
done with it all, and he's ready to pay pay
the penance.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
Yeah, but he Usually even when the evidence is clear,
it takes longer than this. Like we see, there's so
many things out there.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
It's gonna be another month before the arraignment though.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Yeah, yeah, but it's gonna in a month it will
be over. Like it's gonna be like this story.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
I have a deal.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
I'm telling you, by the time we get to June,
this story is gonna be over. It will it will disappear.
Ebe's gonna wind up getting whatever his penalty. He is
going to wind up, and and once he's it's going
to be done, won't even talk about it because we've
seen the results. We've seen the reports from from the
from the FBI on this and then and the Feds.
And Otani is a victim, he pay hasn't been into
(10:13):
taking the money.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
He recording bank conversations.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Yeah, my favorite was the text message, and we talked
about it last night where the guy where the one
gambler said yeah, no, we know, you know, Otani's covered.
It's good for nothing's wrong here, and and he Pey responded, well,
technically I did steal from.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Says that to the illegal gambler.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Technically I did steal. So yeah, you know so. I
mean so by the time June comes, this story is
going to be such a minor deal because of what
we've seen from the Feds in the last couple of
days and the fact that this is going just so
incredibly fast.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
And which all parties seem to want.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Yeah, but but I think in in in a lot
of other cases, a lot of other high profile cases
involving celebrities or athletes, it still drags out. But yet
this is something that suddenly we can get done this fast.
It's like whoa, whoa, whoa what really so the wheels
of justice can go fast and we want him to
BH not so fast we want them for other things.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
It's just well, pick any celebrity that's been in the
news recent weeks, whether it's for Shee Rerice or Dinny
or any they're they're contesting or avoiding. It's completely different
than this particular thing. This guy knows what he did,
has admitted what he did, and really wants it to
get over with.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
I don't know. I wouldn't be so happy. I wouldn't
be so quick to want to go to prison. I
don't know about that. Eh, I'm ready, I'm ready to go.
I did it. I'm ready, ready to go. I'm ready
to go. I know about that.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
I don't think he's used that word. Just get this
over with? What kind of deal do we have to make?
I know what I've did.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
You know what I did.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
I'm not going to contest this.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Yeah, but he's he could be facing up to thirty years.
Is he gonna get thirty years? Probably not? But you know,
if this was hey, thirty months and I want to
get it over and I'm going to serve into minimum security.
So okay, I can see where that would have come
with that, But this is thirty years. This is like
the majority of the rest of the prime of his
life because he's forty years old and he's gonna go
to prison for a long time of it.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Yeah, and for the moment surrenders his passport now has
to submit to drug testing as well.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
Do you know what else is probably gonna take thirty
years Jason's apology to show, Hey, I thought you're.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
Gonna say for the Mets to win the World Series again,
hanging for the Jets to go to the playoffs again,
it's a playoff game.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
They probably won't.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
I feel like I'm doing your job for you with that.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
What you apologize to old TAWNI what I'm badding right
now in the seven to seven game, in the seventh.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
I said, last night, Oh Toanni is going sorry this,
I said, he is going to go free on this
and should this is gonna be by the time we
get to June, we won't even talk about this story.
Whatever happens with Epe going on, this is gonna be.
This has been for whatever reason, it's been fast tracked
and the investigation is gonna end and show hey, by
(12:51):
the Feds has been put in the clear, Baseball is
gonna have some kind of sham investigation. They're gonna go,
we don't want any more of this than we have
to have. So yeah, that's great. They might even have one.
Rob Manfred might just say, yeah, what they said, Oh thanks,
Rob Man, I appreciate that what would be a sham
investigation from baseball?
Speaker 2 (13:08):
Their own player is not guilty. He's a victim of robbery.
Yeah no, but still is just doubled by the way.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Right, but you just you still want baseball. Okay, we're
gonna put out we got to make it so.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
A real investigation, yes, absolutely, a real effort.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Sure, but it's not no, no, Rob Manfred's is just
gonna say, oh yeah, yeah, look the fence figured it out.
We don't need to. I don't need to put a
man power.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
But if you're at MLB at this point, what kind
of punishment do you have in mind for the player?
You punish someone for just being stupid enough to hand over.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Zero there will be zero zero punishment for sho heo
toni zero. And like I said, with the time June
comes the Epe story will recede into the background and
we won't even talk. It won't even be a storyline
for the season, which is crazy considering how close they
were for so long. And he's able to take money
away and just it's it's just trust me. I can
see where this is going. It's it's hot, it's hot
(13:59):
and heavy, and it's just going to suddenly disappear.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
But clearly he wouldn't have been able to take money
away if there wasn't the different languages, because there are
more than one person in the inner circle of Shohyotani.
It's just the guy he relied on, the interpreter. He
really did in the other two English speaking guys in
the inner circle. And that's how he got away with this,
wiring funds out of Atani's count to pay for his
(14:24):
own gambling losses and in fact set up the Angel
salary to go into this account. It was perfect for him.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
Well, I will say this, this is then this is
a big deal, and this is why Otani had a
very small and has a very small inner circle, which
is great, right the people you want to trust, and
I understand that. But this is why celebrities, actors, singers
they have a lot of people involved in their lives
because it's tougher to steal when there's more people involved,
(14:53):
when you have checks and balances of managers who are
looking after money, and there's agents who are looking after money,
and and you have and you have. I don't want
to say it's got to be in the dozens of people,
but when you have between ten and twenty people that
are in charge of your career, when it comes to
your money and what you're doing, it becomes a lot
harder to take money. But when there's a small inner
(15:15):
circle and one guy has access to things, I could
do this as long as I want to. And many
celebrities will tell you, yes, I know it's embarrassing, but yeah,
I have a lot of money, and I don't see
sometimes if three or four million dollars has gone anywhere,
I don't see it sometimes because whatever is done with
creative accounting, I just don't see it. Like there's a
lot of celebrities to say that, and Otani has that
(15:37):
kind of money, so I can see that part of it.
But I can see where this is where you talk
about having a small inner circle, This can really hurt
you because there's only a couple of people you have
to if you want to do something bad. There's only
a couple people got to worry about getting by, And
if you have all the responsibility on it, you don't
have to worry about them at all.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Which is part of the greatness of the founding of
this country is creating the checks and balances and getting
away from England and still arding a new country where
no one person is king. That should be the case
in your celebrity life as well. Two things to update
the Mariners. There are four late games in baseball. The
Mariners have won four to two over the Cubs and
Ladies and Gentlemen. The Oakland A's did just win. Gave
(16:15):
up a home run, the tying homer in the ninth,
but they won in the bottom of the tenth anyway,
two to one over Washington.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
The A's now will have a three and a half
game lead ahead of the Astros in the ALA.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
And we do have the attendance figures now that it
is a final in Oakland. To tonight's attendance, drum roll,
please five five five five five.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
I said three too many people.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Five thousand and seven seventy seven, So lower than their
low average early season.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Wow. Jason Smith Steve Desager in for Mike Harmon tonight
coming up next. This is a weekend a lot of
people have their fingers crossed for one athlete. Can he
turn back time for one day? Or really two days?

Speaker 3 (17:21):
But here's the thing.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
We never have enough time to get to everything we
want to get.
Speaker 5 (17:25):
To, and that's why we have a brand new podcast
called over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun
in our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy will be over promising things we never
have time for. Yeah, you blubber list Jam and me.
Speaker 4 (17:39):
Well you know what it's called over promise. You should
be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years.
Speaker 5 (17:43):
Well, it's a Cavino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna
be talking sports, of course, but we're also gonna talk
life and relationships. And if Rich and I are arguing
about something or we didn't have enough time, it will
continue on our after show called over Promised.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Well, if you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make
sure you check out over Promise and also Uncensored, by
the way, so maybe we'll go at it even a
little harder. It's gonna be the best after show podcast
of all time.
Speaker 5 (18:07):
There you go, over Promising. Remember you could see it
on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen to over Promised
with Cadino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts
or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with Steve Desager
in for Mike Harmon. Starting to see a little bit
of clarity in some things in the NBA. As we
said we jumped on the air tonight, this is an
extremely fun night because everything is up for grabs in
the Western Conference, I mean, not so much of the
East except for the Knicks. Can finish second really cement
(18:41):
Jalen Brunson's MVP candidacy, Nope, as they are tied with
the Bucks now for the second seat in the East.
It's gonna come down to Sunday. The Knicks do not
have the tiebreakers, so the Bucks can clinch with a
top with a win over Orlando. The Knicks need to
win and hope the Bucks lose. But the Bucks lost
the night.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
To the Thunder and they're missing Giannis obviously this last week.
And by the way, all the games in the East
on Sunday for the finales all start at one pm Eastern,
and all the games in the West on Sunday start
at three thirty Eastern, So that Milwaukee game and the
next game they'll start at the same time. Those three
that are tied for first in the West, all three
games start at the same time.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
That's great. I mean, the NBA is going to get
a final day where you're getting a lot of attention
when you thought all the drama was gone, right, because
we thought coming in to this week, we thought, okay, well,
we see the teams. We know who's going to be
one through ten, right, the drama of who's gonna get in.
Is there gonna be a high profile team left out
that's not in the top ten, not in the playing round. No,
(19:42):
we know everybody getting in, but the drama of getting
into the playing round, especially in the West, because we
are going to have a star studded Western Conference playing round,
and now the unsuredness of what we're going to see anywhere,
because any one of three teams can win the Western
Conference because you have three teams tied at the top
of it, You've got five teams that can all change
(20:04):
spots six through ten. It really it's just there's so
many permutations and combinations. It's like it's hard for any
team to know what to root for. I know you're
rooting for not facing the Nuggets. That's the only thing.
You don't want to face the Nuggets. But everything else
it's who knows, man like, should we play to win,
should we play to finish eighth? What should we do?
Because the NBA playoffs, more than anything else, is about matchups,
(20:27):
right every other sport, Yes, the NFL, you can talk
about matchups, and I understand that, but you know you're
not gonna avoid everybody. You're gonna eventually have to play somebody.
Because fewer teams make the playoffs in the NFL, you
gotta get through somebody. But the but the NBA playoffs
are always about matchups, especially in the early rounds, and
if you have you don't want a bad matchup. And
the only bad matchup you can get of any of
(20:49):
these teams in the West is playing the Nuggets in
the first round. And they could play anybody because they
could finish first, second, or third. So you're talking about
they could, they could, They could be in the three six,
they could be in the two seven to one eight,
They could play any number of five. They could play
any number of those five teams that that are left
off overall when all of this is going on. So
this is this is just so much fun tonight to
see this go and they're lost to the Spurs. Really
(21:12):
is what how did you have it into this? Because
it was stunning. I mean, even though the spur has
been playing better and Wemby had another huge game.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
They were twenty and sixty. That's all we need to say.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
You gotta think the Nuggets coming into this game or no, kids.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
Is still playing, Jamal Murray's playing these days.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
He had Jamal Murray had forty ten, thirty five.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Points and they lost by one. So Denver's got fifty
six wins. Minnesota has fifty six wins. Oklahoma City has
fifty six wins. No NBA games on Saturday, then every
team plays on Sunday, and the bad news is for
the Nuggets then not only do they need to win
at Memphis on Sunday, and on paper that seems likely,
they need the other two to lose both of them
(21:55):
to go back into the one seat because they're number
three seed on tie breakers right now. And it just
got worse for Golden State as they just lost at
home to New Orleans one fourteen, one h nine. Now
the Pelicans clinch a playoff spot and avoid the play
in if they can get their win, and the Sun's
lost tonight and the Suns are still losing. It's Sacramento
(22:16):
ninety one eighty eight over the Suns with about nine
minutes to go in the late game in Northern California. Yeah,
this is coming right down to it when everybody plays
on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (22:25):
And how great are things for the Lakers compared to
how they looked when we started the show. I mean,
this is how fast things change. Right, We went on
it and you came on and we talked about, boy,
how bad does this road for the Lakers look? Right?
We came on the show at seven o'clock, the Lakers
were playing, and it was it was a back and
forth game with Memphis, right, it shouldn't have been, but
(22:46):
it was. The Lakers were looking at okay, even if
they get out of the play in round, right, they
would have to play the Warriors or the Kings, neither
of whom they have a good record against this year.
So it's on that road too, right, on the road
against you don't have a good record against, So that's
that's bad.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
In fact, it's zero to four against Sacramento. Lakers are
one and three against Golden State.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
Bad matchups and on the road. Right, But okay, let's
say you wouldn't get out of it. You get out
of that, and you're the eighth seed and you are
playing the Nuggets, and you are going home early. I'm sorry,
but you're going home early. And now two hours later,
you have the Nuggets in third and the Lakers are
in eighth and control their own destiny to play in
(23:30):
that seven to eight game against the Suns. The Sons
are playing, I mean, the Sons are playing right now.
And we'll have an update on this game coming up
in a few minutes, or we'll have a final coming up.
But right now it's ninety one to ninety one against
the Kings with nine and a half minutes to go
in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
So you know what the Lakers are rooting for right now?
Oh man, that would help us if the Sacramento Kings
could just lose tonight, because then the Lakers would be
alone in eighth, a game ahead of Sacramento with one
game to play.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
And then the Lakers have this situation of Okay, we
can play the Suns and we get two chances to
win one game, and the Kings and the Warriors would
play I mean this.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
Game home games, you know, maybe a home game in
there next week instead of two on the road and
avoiding Denver first. I mean, it's just it has changed
in two hours, Karin Kid, one home game if they
win Sunday.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
Steve, Yeah, in two hours, things went from you don't
want to be the Lakers to you know, hey, I
wouldn't mind being the Lakers. I think the Lakers are.
They're gonna be okay. I think we're okay, We're the Lakers.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
The way things start and the play and start a
tournament begins on Tuesday. This is what determines the number
seven to eight seeds in each conference for the playoffs.
To start, the seventh place team in the season standings
would host the eighth place club, so it could be
say Phoenix hosting the Lakers. We'll see the winner of
that one game becomes the seventh seed in the playoffs,
(24:51):
and then the loser gets a second chance, a second
playing game next week to try and earn their way in.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
Oh. Just an unbelievable night in the NBA, and the
final domino will fall. We get that final between the
Sons and the Kings. That's gonna tell us a lot
going into Sunday. But going into Sunday, are we gonna
see Tiger Woods around? Is he going to wind up
being able to compete? Could he win another Masters. We'll
have more on that coming up in two minutes, But
first Steve Desager has what's trending in the wide world
(25:19):
of sports.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
Tiger Woods is one over par, tied for twenty second
place at Augusta the leaders by two strokes Scottie Scheffler
and a three way tie for the lead along with
Bryson De'shambeau and Max Homa. Colin Morikawa's three shots back.
Xander Schaffley is six back. He's at even par through
two rounds. I mentioned Woods one over Brooks Koepka two
(25:40):
over par, Phil Mickelson four over, as are Rory McElroy
and Jason Day John Rohm five over par. All of
those golfers I mentioned made the cut. They're still gonna
be golfing this weekend. Fortunately, the weekend weather at Augusta,
Georgia will be sunny without the very high winds of
today and yesterday. The scores were high today among those
(26:01):
barely making the cut to still be playing tomorrow. At
six over par, Ricky Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama just missing
the cut, they're done for the weekend. Justin Thomas, Sergio
Garcia and Wyndham Clark at seven over. Victor Hoblin was
eight over par, Jordan Speith nine over, Dustin Johnson thirteen
(26:21):
over par. Two late games in the NBA, Sacramento has
retaken the lead against the Phoenix Suns ninety four ninety
one with eight minutes to go. Meanwhile, it's six minutes
left in LA and Utah's ahead of the Clippers ninety
eight to ninety six. I realize Utah is not going anywhere,
but a surprise not results price score. At the moment,
(26:45):
Houston won at Portland. Neither will be advancing after this weekend.
Dallas sat as starters and lost at home to Detroit.
Piston's end a six game losing streak. Lakers survived at
Memphis one twenty three to one twenty Lebron James thirty
seven points, Anthony Davis with thirty six. New Orleans a
winner at Golden State one fourteen, one oh nine Steph
(27:06):
Curry and defeat thirty three points and seven turnovers. The
Golden State Warriors have a five hundred record at home,
and the Warriors may not be at home at all
next week. In the play in Oklahoma City and Minnesota
each one at home while Denver was upset. Those three
are tied for first with one game to go in
(27:28):
the Western Conference standis. Minnesota's win was one oh nine
one oh six against Atlanta, sending the Hawks to a
fifth straight loss. Rudy Gobert of Minnesota twenty five points,
nineteen rebounds, five blocks. He was ten of ten shooting
from the floor. And the good news for the Timberwolves
Karl Anthony Town's return from his knee injury. He had
surgery a month ago. He had eleven points, eight assists Tonight.
(27:49):
Oklahoma City, like Minnesota, also up to fifty six wins
for the season. OKC beat Milwaukee won twenty five one
oh seven, but somehow Denver lost at San Antonio one
twenty one to the Spurs victor Webbin Yama thirty four
points and seven turnovers. The next trailed at home late
first quarter to Brooklyn twenty one to five, and still
(28:09):
beat the Nets one eleven to one oh seven despite
forty one points from Brooklyn's Cam Thomas. Victories for Boston
and Cleveland, the Cleveland Cavaliers clinch a playoff spot with
their win. Chicago and Philadelphia with victories Miami as well.
I mentioned Philly, they've won seven in a row. Joel
and beat at thirty two points Tyrese Maxi twenty eight.
Philadelphia beat Orlando one twenty five to one thirteen. So
(28:32):
there's a chance for some clinchings elsewhere that did not
happen tonight. The Orlando Magic, for example, could have clinched
a playoff spot with a win, could have locked in
the Sixers into a playoff game if they'd won at Philly,
not so Pacers lost at Cleveland. So while Cavs clinch
a playoff spot with this victory, Pacers would have clinched
(28:53):
a playoff spot with a win. Miami would have been
locked into the playing game with a law So or
magic win. Neither of those things happened again. Playing tournament
starts on Tuesday, and the latest update on this late
game at Sacramento, it's under eight minutes to go and
it's ninety four to ninety one Kings over the Suns MLB.
(29:14):
As far as the late games as Dodgers Stadium, it's
ninth inning, seven to seven Dodgers and Padres San Diego
getting a run in the sixth and three in the
seventh to even the game. Two run homer from Fernando
Tatiste Junior tied it. Fernando Senior, by the way many
moons ago at Dodger Stadium, is the guy that once
(29:35):
hit two Grand Slams in the same inning against John
No Park at the Dodgers, and this is the only
game still going, by the way, that Dodgers Padres game
that's in a tie because the Cardinals have won nine
to six. At Arizona, Seattle was a winner for to
two over the Cubs and Oakland. Despite giving up the
tying homer top of the ninth one in ten innings
against Washington two to one, the A's offense went three
(29:56):
for thirty two and still got a victory. Texas sent
Houston didn't another loss. It was twelve eighth the final.
Houston Astros four and eleven Yankees at Cleveland rained out
split double header.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
No wait, Steve, can the Astro still catch the A's
in the West or have they been eliminated?
Speaker 3 (30:11):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (30:11):
That seems unlikely at this point that A's powerhouse offense
is going to stay above them in the standings this
entire time. Atlanta and Cincinnati with road wins, and the
Mets beat Kansas City four to one. Casey had won
seven straight, but the loss to Michael Walker six innings,
five runs allowed. Attendance was nineteen thousand. The Mets at
home were one and five, but Luis Severino went five
(30:32):
innings for the win. Pete Alonzo his fourth home run
victories for Pittsburgh and Milwaukee. Back to you.
Speaker 1 (30:38):
You know, I remember that Fernando Tatis junior game when
he hit a senior game when he hit both those
grand slams. The guy that caught the ball held the
ball up and Dodger Stadium security came in and cut
the guy's arm off, and they grabbed the arm that
was still clutching the ball. I remember the video of
the one guy trying to pry the fingers off the
ball so he could grab it and get it.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
I mean, that was making it worse. They wouldn't authenticate
the arm.
Speaker 1 (31:05):
But it's can't you tell it's my arm?
Speaker 4 (31:07):
You?
Speaker 2 (31:08):
I don't know at all.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
Any guy can walk in here with a bloody stump
and the blood all over his shirt, passing out. Should
you be in the hospital, How do I know what's
your arm?
Speaker 5 (31:16):
You?
Speaker 1 (31:16):
Same the beginning of the tattoo on this part and
the end of the tattoo on this part.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
It's the same arm from that old Phil Hartman Saturday
Night Live sketch at the old Drug Olympics where somebody
is trying to deadlift weight and the weight stays on
the floor and the arms come apart.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
They had the blood starts spurting out the shoulders where
it was no but look, but just real serious about
about the astros here for a second. Okay, we'll get
to talker Woods in a couple of minutes. But you
just said serious and the Astros, Yes, well, because hey.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
Not playing serious baseball.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
I know, I know it is April twelfth. I get it,
and I get it. But the Astros have allowed the
most runs in the American League and they are four
and eleven and they have won one series so far.
That's all he there, and then.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
We're down twelve three tonight in the Cities.
Speaker 1 (32:12):
Yeah, yeah, this was a This was a This was
a big, big development because now suddenly I knew they
weren't gonna be the Astros that were used to. They've
they've lost too many players.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
And man, they miss Ferlander. Where is the pitching? And
then you know, they finally brought in Josh Hayter just
to see what it feels like to pitch in the
final inning of a game. She's hardly a safe situation.
Just we paid so much for him. Send him out there.
Speaker 3 (32:36):
They have four garbage cans on IR.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
They've allowed the most runs in the American League by ten,
Like it's not close. Like they've allowed eighty six runs
so far this year. I knew, I knew it was
gonna be a little bit less for them. But boy,
it certainly feels like they've just fallen They've just fallen
off all at once, like they've gotten old, and they've.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
Gotten Mealdez got and I wouldn't say old again, and
her kid is not exactly young. And Verlander when he's
healthy is great still but very old and supposed to
be coming back from rehab. Start.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
Yeah, they look runs don't last forever. And just because
we see the Astros are always good and they always win,
it always upsets mean a run of good seasons, Yes,
a run of good seasons, unlike.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
The Dodger lead tonight. Those runs still last forever.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
So we think that the Astros are always good. They're
churning team, they're churning players over and they're not. Yeah,
they This is a team that looks like, if anything,
they're getting close to the end of their run, because
you saw last year they didn't quite have enough the
Rangers win the World Series and now this is an
abysmal start for them. Look, you're outside of the White Sox.
Oh my god. If the White Sox win twenty games
(33:43):
this year, they'll be lucky. The AS is the worst
team in the Americans.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
They're getting no offense from first base, no offense from
third base, and no starting pitching. They deserve to have
their record right now, which is, believe it or not,
four four wins from Houston so far, four and eleven.
Speaker 1 (33:59):
I mean they could be taking for Caleb Williams. That's
the only thing that might that could be.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
They already got Stroud, what do they need?
Speaker 3 (34:06):
Get Height in there again? I like it.
Speaker 1 (34:09):
Anytime I say four eleven, that's what you're gonna say.
The Jason Smith Show is Steve Desager in for Mike
Harmon tonight. We are live from the Tirak dot com studios.
We'll have more on the NBA coming up in a bit.
Uh five and a half to go in the fourth quarter.
Sacramento now with the three point lead over Phoenix ninety
nine ninety six, but coming up next. It has been
(34:30):
some kind of effort for Tiger Woods to be where
he's at right now, making the cut this weekend at Augusta.
Where's he gonna be on Sunday. He's not gonna be
in Cleveland. That's next right here. This is Fox Sports Radio.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
(34:53):
pm Pacific, Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show is
Steve Desager in for Mike Harmon, live from the Tie
dot Com Studios. Two and a half to go in
the fourth quarter, Sacramento leads Phoenix one oh five, one
oh one. When this game goes final, we'll know a
little bit more about what we need to see Sunday
(35:13):
in the NBA plasts. We might not know anything, but
we could know a little bit more. But speaking of Sunday,
Tiger Woods did a phenomenal job the last couple of days.
Battlely elements the fact that he's hardly played any golf
this year, and he makes the cut at the Masters
for the twenty fourth year in a row. He is
(35:34):
plus one for the tournament. Now still has a lot
of work to do. He is tied for twenty second.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
But the cut line was six over.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
He's won over, so yeah, no, he was very comfortably inside.
He has very comfortably inside the cut line. The scores
so far at Augusta are not what you'd expect. They're
usually a little bit higher or a little bit lower.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
Rather very wedy today.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
But with the wind you see a three way tie
at the top of the leader board, and Scotti Scheffler,
who could be leaving if he has a baby. Regardless
of whether or not he's winning the tournament or not,
he is one of the leaders. Bryson d Chambeau also
at six under, but Tiger is won over and he
said today after he made the cut, he said, that's great,
but I'm in this. I have a chance to win
(36:15):
this thing this weekend. And I dig that Tiger always
has that belief. That's how you have to when you
want to win like this, And I dig that he thinks, hey,
I'm still in this. He's not in it. He's not
in it. Tough for the first two days for Tiger,
whenever he has layoffs, those are the easy days, right
when you haven't played a lot and you come back,
(36:36):
you play okay the first couple of days, the adrenaline
goes through. Now you're suddenly in the pounding of a Saturday,
especially with a long day you had playing the entire
second round. When you get into Saturday and Sunday, that's
when things get difficult. And that's when you haven't played
a lot of golf, that's when things get tougher. Look
(36:56):
in anything, when you haven't done anything for a while
the first time you do it, like say you say
I haven't what's bike? Yeah, say haven't, say haven't ridden
a bike and done cardio for a while? Right, the
first shit I have. The first few minutes on the
bike are fine. Right, if I normally do a half
hour a cardio, the first five or seven minutes are
(37:18):
gonna be great. Yeah, feeling good, feeling good. Oh, wait
a minute. Then you get into fifteen minutes, twenty minutes,
and it gets a little bit harder. And and that's
the way it is for anyone you haven't done anything.
The longer you have to do it following a layoff,
the more difficult it gets. The first two days for
Tiger are the easier ones. The last two days are
the tough ones. If Tiger had come in out of
today instead of one over, if he was two or
(37:41):
three under, I would say, okay, maybe because if the
he can't go low like he like he used to,
so he needs the pack to stay where it's at.
If the weather continues to be a factor and the
scores can't go low, bet be more dynamic. Yeah, Tiger
could stay in it. But you're talking about being one over.
How many people have to just implode that are playing
(38:03):
good golf even with the weather. It's just it's just
not gonna happen, right, I mean, we're I feel like
we're moving, We're moving the goalpost for Tiger now it's
focused on oh, twenty fourth, theateral, making the cut. No,
that's amazing. But this is a guy that was if
he didn't win a tournament, it was a failure. And
we're kind of in the the the end of the
the Mike Tyson, Oh, maybe he can win a couple
(38:25):
of fights. No, No, it's Oh, it's not even the
Mike Tyson hangover parts what I did there. It's not
even the hangover of Mike Tyson's career where we were hoping,
maybe Michael come back and win. This is like the
hangover to the hangover part where he was maybe only
fighting at the end for whatever reason and it was
really over, but we just watched him because we always
watched him. I mean, that's kind of where Tiger is
right now. He had his big Master's victory a couple
(38:47):
of years ago, the nineteen eighty six Jack Nicholas version
of the final Major for his career, and you know, look,
Tiger being around is great, but there's the scores are
not there for him, and there's too many people he's
got to leap.
Speaker 2 (38:59):
Yeah, he's got about twenty people realistically in front of
him to actually win the Masters this weekend at Augusta,
and the weather was not good these first two days.
It will be noticeably better the next two days to
finish out the tournament. Remember we had the rain delay
to start round one Thursday, and then some win yesterday
and a whole lot of win today, which means there
are multiple guys that are in the top ten right
(39:22):
now at the Masters who didn't shoot below seventy in
either round so far. Tiger woods with a seventy three
first round, seventy two in the second round today. Even
if his scores go lower, there will be plenty of
guys plenty ahead of him who scores will also be
going lower. And I think you brought up the good
point about where he is physically. It's going to be
(39:45):
a third straight day and then a fourth straight day
of all the walking and the physical aspect of golf, which,
let's say it out loud, is not the most strenuous
of sports. John Rahm is a ridiculously rich golfer. He
probably couldn't run literally from where he teas off to
the green. These are not athletes. Tiger Woods was noticeably
(40:07):
different in the athletic vein for a golfer in his prime.
He's not in his prime anymore, and this might be
a factor.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
Look, I'd love to see it. I mean really, I
would lie. I mean, how awesome would it be to
see Tiger coming down the stretch on Sunday at nay
En Corner and suddenly, oh my goodness, look at what
Tiger can do. But it's just too much. The golfers
now are too good, and there's too many guys that
can go really low if the weather is.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
The Chefleet Scotty S. Sheffley is number one in the
world and he's tied for the lead.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
Yeah, I mean, look like, if the weather was going
to be a factor, I would throw out an outside hope.
But if the weather is going to be fine, there's
too many golfers that are going to go low, and
Tiger just is not gonna be able to catch up
on seven strokes on twenty guys, Like the math just
is not there for him.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
An interesting name in the top seven so far. A
guy that used to be the best amateur Ludwig Oldberg
who played college golf in the US from Sweden. Amazing.
He's at two under par, only four back. NBA update,
nine seconds left Sacramento and the Suns are tied at
one oh seven.
Speaker 1 (41:08):
Who oh so where are we sitting in the NBA?
Coming up in five minutes, we'll try to break it
down for you as well as have a really big
story out of college basketball as well. Keep it right here,
Jason Smith, Steve the Sacred from Mike Harmon. This is
Fox Sports Radio.
