(00:53):
The Oklahoma Sooners are one went away from the Women's
College World Series, going for their fifth straight championship. They
beat Texas tonight eight to three, and boy, I'll tell you,
I think they need pay to play because that gay
you sometimes he's seven innings softball games. Man, Wow, they
go they take forever and I'm watching it going, oh
my god, it's just taking so long. And I'm watching
(01:15):
the game mostly because I'm waiting to see Ella Parker
play because I coached her sister in little league and
I know her dad pretty well. Her uncle is Dave Roberts,
oh by the way, and she's a freshman Oklahoma, and
you know, she was great at the little league. And
she hits third for them. And it's initting like four fifty,
and I'm like, hell, I said, don't worry, she's coming
up soon. She's coming up soon. And I'm like, it's
been a half hour. What the hell is going on here? Man?
(01:39):
Hell is this game taking so long? Sometimes these games
just take forever.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Commercials, baby, come on now, man, stretch it out as
long as you can.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Yeah, but these these are seven inning games. I shouldn't
be taking this long. Like, wow, seven innings and the
pitches come fast, fast, fast, hey, but just takes too long. Man.
I'm like, come on, man, how is this game going
this long?
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Pitching changes, conga lines, defensive strategy meetings, there's a lot
of those, yeah, in women's softball, right, a lot of
meetings on the mound that don't get broken up quite
so quickly. I like that your filibus string did not
talk about the White Sox losing on a home run
in the bottom of the ninth to you know, I
didn't even get extra innings.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
I didn't and all that nonsense. Yeah, at least if
the White Sox are going to lose you wanted them to,
you know, give you some extra time. But yeah, I'm
sorry about that. Bell. Hey.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
By the way, this is the longest losing streak now
at thirteen games, longest losing streak for the White Sox
in one hundred years.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Wow, it's thirteen games. It's only a thirteen It.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Seems like a lot more than that, You lie, Mike.
They just put the graphic up. Wow it was the
end part of May in nineteen twenty four.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
I don't know that for a fact, Jason. I just
know that's not true.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
No, you know, ID mean, look, a thirteen game losing street.
I Look, they're twenty six games out, They're fifteen and
forty seven. Now, we can say a lot of numbers
for the White Sox, but just really quick, this is
this is what blows me away. As bad as the
Mets have been, right, they're fourteen and fourteen away from home, Okay,
they're awful at home, which doesn't make any sense, but
they're fourteen and fourth toever. Okay, the White Sox have
(03:19):
won five away games this year. Five. Yeah, that is
the fewest in MLB. And boy, they're gonna need another
couple of months to get to second, which I believe
are the Rockies, who have won like nine. They have
won five away games in nearly the first three months
of the season, I mean, and the for two and
a half months basically of the season, they've won five
(03:41):
away games.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
I will say this, I was really happy not to
hear the spin of Johnny trying to, you know, come
up with some sunshine and rainbows talk and having Stone
laugh at him again. They immediately said, hey, thanks for watching.
We're done with this game.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
This is really it is amazing. Sometimes and you say
their run differential is minus one forty, Yeah, buddy, I
mean that. I mean the second worst team, which is
really bad. The second worst team are the Rockies. They're
only minus ninety seven. I mean that's me. I mean,
that's how is how are they this bad? How are
they this bad? Hey, you cant have a sale? Garcia
(04:19):
back the Marlins finally ate all his money. You can
get him back. He'll be good.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Sure is he playing for a mile stone? That's what
I want now, boy, Guys that are at the end
of their runs, like, hey, if he gets forty hits,
he gets to two thousand, all right, bring it in.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Can he actually run to first base? We don't know?
Oh man, I mean sixty games in Oh my goodness,
I had.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
A long way to go. I needed them to try
to get me to training camp.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
But no, no, oh no, come on, man, you're not
You're already in seven on seven's with Caleb Williams. That's
where you.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Oh no, no, no, I'm spending all my extra hours planning
my European vacation and tent.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
For the fall. I'm done, Yeah, variety show or something.
I'm done with this. All right, I'm gonna I'm gonna
Seleck because I think he has something for us here.
I'm gonna take things justin Frosburg. Never thought he'd say
for five.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
Hundred if only you came to me ten seconds earlier,
Jason Smith. We were on perfect Game watch in Oakland,
and the second you came to me a double Oh.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Did I ruin it? I ruined it?
Speaker 4 (05:30):
Joey Asked had a perfect game going until you get.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Damn it all the hell that's my fault. That that's
my fault.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Good for him though, he's got a nice long mane
on him and a good beard.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Yeah, we're done with this game, Mike. We can move.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
He was rocket to him only seventy pitches, right, he
was on track throwing one hundred pitches. He could have
stayed in there in the crowd, more pitches than White
Sox wins this year.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Oh too, low.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
I'm sorry you only only had seventy.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Hell, man, he's only It's really lucky we're not in
the studio sitting side by side together.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Look, we'll have more on the NBA Finals coming up
in a few minutes. But you know, tonight's another big
night in the WNBA. And it's weird because I feel
like every night is a big night. Even when they
don't play, things happen, and even though there's controversy, there's
stuff going on, and there's questions about, you know, is
the league ready to embrace success and they're really not.
(06:26):
I kind of go back to I think about this,
I think about the scene from Almost Famous, right, you
that's my favorite movie, and Jimmy Fallon comes in to
manage the band after. You know, they're this popular band,
still water, but they're what they've done on the tour
has just screwed them, right. They broke a gate, they
bailed out on a gig, and it was just not
(06:47):
been going well. But they're this big band. And he
comes in and he says, listen, right now, you owe
the record company more than you got, and he goes
like they think they're making It's like, you owe the
record company more than you have, but your record selling
and there's money to be made. So I'm here to
help get that train on track. And I kind of
feel that way with a WNBA. Hey, you know, look
at all this stuff going on. You got bad hits
(07:08):
from behind, you have dirty plays, you have players not
taking responsibility of players who want credit for everything going
on in the league. But at the same time, there's
money to be made. Everybody is interested, and it's still
a train that is rolling. It's still kind of like
snow piercer, right, you want to make sure it stays
on the track. So, you know, just for a different
look at the WNBA for a seconds, as bad as
(07:29):
you thinks, as bad as the optics look right now,
because look optic wise, it's not great. Right you look
at it and say, okay, obviously, players really are fighting
over who should get credit for the league. They're upset
when when anything gets criticized and say, you should have
been paying attention to us years ago. They don't like
the fact that Caitlyn Clark. A lot of players don't
like the fact that Kaitlin Clark has come in and
(07:50):
gotten chewed deals and is the biggest star in the game. Right,
So you see that and it's like, boy, how could
you not just go everybody can be stars? How can
you not go out there and just continue to grow
the game and grow the league. You have to show
you're ready for this. And those are real big issues,
right because that's the optic of the WNBA. And perception
is reality. If the perception of the WNBA is oh
my god, it's a mess right now, that's reality. But
(08:12):
at the same point, people are still watching. They still
love the players, and that's the big thing. They love
Caitlin Clark, we love Angel Reese, We love Asia Wilson,
who trends every time she plays, whether it's whether it's
you want to talk about New York and Brianna Stewart
or you want to talk about Las Vegas and Kelsey Plumb.
There are players that people care about and it's fun
(08:33):
and so while yeah, there are issues that they have
that they got to figure out, and a lot of
it is just understand this is what it means to
be a big time sport. You have to be okay
with criticism. You have to understand that when criticism comes,
handle it the right way. Don't look like you're fighting
over who should get credit over or over a league, right,
you look ridiculous. You don't look like you're ready for
the extra attention that comes on to you when it
(08:54):
comes from the media. You want to fight old battles
about how come you didn't watch this league years ago?
I'm sorry. This is when the league is hit and
hit it big. I'm sorry it happens that way. You
know how long did it take other sports to hit
it big? The NFL was way behind Major League Baseball.
Suddenly the Super Bowl eeric game and color TV shows
up and the Super Bowl is great. Uh, you think
players are walking around go why weren't you watching us
in the nineteen forties when the single wing offense was
(09:16):
there and final scores were six to two. No, I mean,
this is when the sport hits. It's nobody's fault. I
don't know who you're mad at. I mean, are you
mad that maybe things didn't go your way earlier and
you should have made more money? Yeah? I get that,
But that's everything in sports. That's what baseball players of
the seventies are saying. That's why you're you know, Mike
Schmidt and Rich Gossig and all these guys were the
best players that any of us have ever seen that
(09:38):
made good money in the seventies. Hey, well, we're not
making the money these guys are making today. It's not
unique to the WNBA, and they should stop pretending like,
oh it is. Oh why are you watching? This is
where we're at right now. This is the league and
you have a lot going for you, and the main
thing you have going for you are the players that
people like watching. So as long as that's going on,
(09:58):
you can solve these issues, right. You know, Gino Orima
hit it on the head today with everything he said
about the w NBA. Caitlin Clark feels like she's being targeted.
The way the games need to be officiated, things to
be looked at differently. He hit all the big all
the big talking points he agrees with, and and and
uh and couple he disagrees with, but he kind of
hits it on the head with the status of the
WNBA and where they're at right now, and and so
(10:21):
I get that that all of this has been it's
been a really rough last few days about it, and
everybody's going back and forth about what they're upset about.
But just get that the best thing the WNB has
has going for them are the players. And when you
have the players, you got what you need. So there's
time for them to figure all of this out. Even
though it looks at times it looks like a clown
show right now and they're not ready to handle success.
(10:43):
They have the players that people are interested in, so
that that's the best thing. And the best part is
I don't think that interest is going away. Are you're
talking about the entire rest of the w NBA season.
Do you see there being a time because it's in
a great spot in the calendar where yeah, teams show
up for mini camp, but then they take the time off.
We're getting the Olympics this year with the with the women,
we are getting a WNBA season. Do you see a
(11:05):
time where over the course of June, July and August
where we don't have as much interest in Caitlin Clark
and Angel Reese and Kelsey Plumb, And no we don't.
I mean they're still going to be big front page storyline.
So as long as you have that going for you,
you can fix what's happening right now and fix the
optics that need to be fixed.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Yeah, I would say the hard part is when we
get to the end of August and into September. Right,
trade deadline is August twentieth, regular season end September nineteenth.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Guess what football? Football and more football.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Because I've already seen some of the folks pontificating, going, yeah,
we'll see who's still there in September. It's like it'll
still be talked about if these the stars are playing,
and certainly Asia Wilson and Kelsey Plumb will be playing
for something important. Watch them a bit tonight as they
took down Dallas. You need to talk about Wilson that
(11:58):
what she's been doing thirty six and twelve fifteen of
twenty two from the field. On the other side for Dallas,
you had Rique Ogumbuale. She had another monster game. She's
averaging on like twenty seven points a game. She went
for thirty one, So I mean, how many shotstars? She
reminds me of Kobe, like, how many shots?
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Three? Yeah, twenty three. He's my favorite volume shooter, right
Ogunbawally never been a shot she didn't like. Oh, you
had a big game. She took forty seven shots and
she scored forty one points. Oh, I love her, which
is fine. It's all good by me.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
But the point being that you've got a number of stars,
and you know you mentioned overnight success kind of thing.
Remember the UFC dismissed as human cock fighting and now
we're up to UFC three hundred whatever for women's basketball.
You've had twenty five years of play and a lot
of stars and a lot of legends. We've celebrated a
(12:50):
bunch of them. We've talked a lot about women's college
basketball in our time together here. We've had a lot
of those luminaries on the show, right, Brianna Stewart among others.
You know, in the NCAA tournament time of things. But
you know, some of it's going through the growing pains
as we've talked about through all of this, you know,
handling the press, more TV deals, more merchandising deals, and
(13:11):
getting past some of the get off my lawn for
lack of a better term, tribalism that we've seen, say
with the NHL for years. Ah, you don't care about it.
You only come in when it's the playoffs or whatever.
It's like, So welcome us in. If we get something wrong,
tell us we're wrong. Don't try to shut us out,
because we want to help you expand your party. We
(13:32):
want we want to bring more people to it and
expand that conversation. And you're in a very interesting time.
In the last couple of years, it's been rife and
for the opportunity for the market to swell, and now
here we are, you know, with all these young stars
that people can see night after night.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
Exit. How about a Fresca exit Swallen do and the
Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carmen live
from the tiraq dot com studios. Come up next. We
have more from basketball. We'll tell you when you watch
the NBA Finals. There's one thing you should just enjoy
because I don't know how much longer it's going to
be around one hundred percent. Just enjoy it because if
(14:13):
it's going to be around past this year. Not quite
sure about that. What is it? I'll tell you next
right here, Jason and Mike, you're listening to fuck.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon live from the ti iraq dot Com studios. Well,
we've made it to NBA Finals eve after the Mavericks
and Celtics clinched their conferences way back in January. With
all this time off, your finally here the night before
(15:29):
the NBA Finals. How's it gonna shake out? Nobody better
to talk to? Longtime NBA insider check them out on
substack as well on Twitter at the Steinline, it is
Mark Stein, Mark, what's happening man? How are you jen?
Something good?
Speaker 6 (15:43):
I'm good?
Speaker 1 (15:44):
So did you get to go away last week? Did
you get to like vacation, like go to Cabo or
something while we waited, like, you know, forty five days
for the NBA Finals to start.
Speaker 6 (15:52):
There are no days off in the NBA. Not still
maybe maybe end to August early, but come on, this
is the twenty four to seven three sixty five leagues.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
Well, I just keep waiting for the Lakers to do
something because, like I mean, I'm waiting for some news
because you know what this week going on, Lebron was
going to have something going on. Like I kept waiting
for something big with Lebron to drop.
Speaker 6 (16:17):
I've noticed you are obsessed with the Lakers. That is
That is another That is another twenty four to seven
three sixty five facts.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
The Machine that keeps giving Mark to my office.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
Mark. Lebron is good. You know, Lebron is good for business?
Is that?
Speaker 6 (16:36):
Am I wrong? Is that unfair?
Speaker 1 (16:38):
Well? Is Lebron good for business or not? Lebron's pretty
good for business.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (16:44):
Look, I think this week, I don't know about the
wide I don't know the Lakers. I think are getting
probably a little bit more attention than we need on
the eve of the edge of the NBA Finals. But look,
they have a coaching vacancy, and I know that. I
know that if I come on the show, I'm contractually.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
Obligated to talk about this.
Speaker 6 (17:03):
So any Lakers want to fire up means go ahead.
I'm ready, all right.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
So before we get into the big question, obviously, JJ
Reddick says he's waiting until after the finals to address
reports he's going to be the Lakers head coach. Is
there any way it's somebody that's not JJ Reddick when
it's all said and done.
Speaker 6 (17:22):
I mean, look, it's hard to see that that, certainly,
I think is the league wide assumption at this point.
But the Lakers behind the scenes have tried to insist
that no decision has been made, and you know there
are there is I would say some level of support
for the James Barrego candidacy. I think it's fair to
(17:45):
say that the two of them have separated themselves from
anybody else that the Lakers were considering. But it's interesting
there is a what if scenario that has been making
the rounds this week that if underline if I want
to make sure that the word if is not omitted
or obscured here, but I have heard from I would
(18:07):
say more than one source within the coaching community this
week posing the what if question, what happens if Detroit
were to part company with many Williams. Because if you
go back to two coaching searches that go in Lakerland,
the Lakers first wanted to Ron lou those negotiations broke down,
(18:28):
they wanted Monni Williams. Mani Williams chose the Phoenix job
over the Lakers job, and then the Lakers pivoted and
hired Frank Bogel and won a Bubble championship in year
one with Frank Bogel. But they had very serious interest
in Mani Williams back in the twenty nineteen off season.
(18:48):
And if the Pistons and Mani Williams word to part company.
Obviously that would it's a what if that would depend
on you know, doesn't even happen in time. I mean
the Lakers moving slowly and deliberately, but I don't know
if they're moving that slowly and that deliberately. So I
guess that is the long winded, long way route to
(19:10):
saying yes, aj Reddick is widely considered the favorite with
good reasons.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
Yeah, if I'm Mannie Williams, I'm also checking out every
box and making my agent make sure that I'm not
losing any money that I got off of that giant
eighty million dollar deal I got.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
With the Pistons.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
All right, So let's get to the main event, finally,
to the finals tomorrow. Kyrie Irving lots of talk and Missoula. Hey,
we're all the villain in somebody's eyes, you know. He
seems at peace and happy with however this all flows,
which is one of the interesting subplots of this as
he tries to take his place, you know, in that
next level of NBA history.
Speaker 6 (19:48):
Look, I think there's a great deal of curiosity toward
you know, what kind of reception he'll get in Boxton,
because obviously it ended in pretty messy fashion, but it's interesting.
I did a po at this week with the legendary
Bob Ryan, who has covered the Celtics for longer and
from closer range than anyone you could nominate, and Bob's
(20:13):
view was that he doesn't think the vitriol is going
to be as bad as forecasted. And I think Kyrie
at this point is such a vet that he's prepared
for whatever unfriendly reception might come, and you know, I
can't imagine that it's going to phase him at this point.
But look, you guys know, I'm based in Dallas. I've
(20:34):
had a front row seat for this season and the
partnership that Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving has struck. I
don't remember many, if any, who are predicting that things
would go this smoothly, but you know, the two of
them have really built this doubles team into something special,
(20:59):
and I think the MAVs have to get some credit
here for really building an atmosphere that gets the best
out of Kyrie Irving with Jason Kidd, a coach that
he really really respects. I would go so far as
saying that Kyrie Irving's never had a coach that he's
as fond of as Jason Kidd, Nico Harrison. The GM
(21:20):
with the Mavericks had a long standing relationship with Kyrie,
irving from their days working together at Nike. And it's just,
you know, I wrote a massive piece about this in March,
just what this ride has been like to kind of
get Kyrie to this point, and I think you're hearing
it now whenever he takes the podium and he talks
(21:41):
about comfort level he has in doubt. But it's just
it's just little stuff like they let him wear whatever
he wants a practice. I mean when you see pictures
of Kyrie when they emerged from practice, like he's always
wearing an Anta shirt or just something that's personalized. Like,
you know, I don't know that every NBA team, every
(22:02):
NBA team would let that happen, but the MAVs let
it happen. And they're just like, it doesn't matter who cares.
And it's just little stuff like that, but it goes
a long way. That's just one small example. And Mark Cuban,
who's still around the team at every game.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
You'll see him.
Speaker 6 (22:18):
You'll see him in a prominent spot sitting near the
bench in these finals you know, he has said it
to me multiple times and it's kind of become his
stock line that, you know, our philosophy with Kyrie has
been listening to him and not telling him, and that
strategy has worked. And you've seen how productive Kyrie Irving
has been this season and especially in the second half
(22:40):
and especially in the playoffs. Is both he and Luca
they are both give there. Neither one is going to
make an all defensive team, but they are giving their
max on defense. And that's to me another hat tip
to Jason Kidd. I mean, he is getting maximum buy
in from these guys. They've got defenders around him, They've
got length around the two of them now with the
(23:01):
trade deadline moves, but Luca and Kyrie are giving as
much on the defensive end as they ever have.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
NBA insider Mark Stein, our guest to Jason Smith saw
with Mike Carmon Love from the tireq dot Com studios.
All right, Mark, so as you said, look, you've been
around this team, you covered this team all year. You
saw what they did at the trade deadline to improve
and really get where they are right now. If I
said to you, complete the sentence. The thing that you
think should worry the Mavericks most about the NBA Finals
(23:29):
is what what's their biggest worry, biggest concern going into
the finals.
Speaker 6 (23:34):
That every Celtic can shoot it and shoot it from deep.
And that's just not a scenario they had to deal
with against the Thunder or the Wolves in the last
two rounds. Boston they are a three point threat the
minute they crossed half court, no matter who ends up
with the ball, and that's going to require a different
(23:55):
defensive scheme and approach. And again, Lively and Gaffard have
become such a good two headed monster and they offered
a rim presence that Minnesota didn't see in the Denver
series and it met with the Timberwolves, who don't shoot
it as well from deep as Boston can. But you
(24:18):
have to think that Moxi Cleeve is going to play
a bigger role in this series for Dallas. They're going
to need a five man who can get out on
the floor because it's not going to be played all
at the rim. And so what Dallas, how Dallas defends
the three is going to be a significant, significant issue
(24:42):
for them and for them to win this series. Now, look,
I have to say Jayson Kidd and Sean Sweeney, his
defensive coordinator. They've pried a lot of different stuff. They've
applied a lot of good strategy and they've you know,
that's I think one of their hallmarks. I think Jason
kidded his core. He does care more as a coach
about the defensive side of the ball. So the Mavericks
(25:04):
have been effective and creative with their defensive game planning
in the first three rounds of this series. But this
will be another test for sure.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
Fox Sports Radio. All right, Mark, So when you take
it from the other side, now, if I said to you,
what should the Celtics' biggest concern for the Mavericks being,
what would you tell me?
Speaker 6 (25:24):
You know that crunch time execution, Like the Celtics have
been this they have been the team of the season.
But we've talked about it all seasons that in crunch
time do we trust them? And I guess to a degree,
I have to say that I'm still questioning it, and
(25:45):
I'm gonna want to see it in this series because
you know, I don't think they should apologize for how
comfortable the path was to the finals because they're playing
under this championship or bust pressure that no other team
in the league to face. They have to win it
all to validate their season, so they don't care that
(26:05):
they had it easier in the first three rounds and
that everybody they play had injuries, like they just needed
to get to the finals and if this is where
they're going to see their first true adversity, they will
take that deal every day of the week. But now
they have to deliver. There are going to be some
crunch time games, and look, the Mavericks have been fantastic
(26:26):
in crunch time in the regular season. In the playoffs,
I'm really curious about, you know, how many roads wins
are we going to see in this series. We know
Boston is only eighteen and fifteen at home the last
four years in the playoffs since the bubble. After the bubble,
they are eighteen and fifteen at home in the playoffs.
(26:47):
That's really middling for a team with this much talent
and the aspirations that the Celtics have, and the mas
have one five road games in a row, they become
and you know, home court advantage has been a operating
steadily all season long, and it's just this is the way,
this is where we are in the NBA. But after
(27:07):
these you know, we saw we've come Minnesota win three
times in Denver, we saw Dallas win three times in Minnesota,
And now I'm just curious, you know, how many who's
gonna hold? Are we going to see some teams actually
hold serve in these finals?
Speaker 3 (27:22):
So that maybe that's why they only get Donnie Wahlberg
to show up and not a bunch of other celebrities
there at eighteen and fifteen, Mark, what are your expectations
from what you're hearing for Porzingis and his availability in
minutes at all?
Speaker 6 (27:35):
Well, availability, I don't think the question he's going to
play he's had. I mean, he hasn't played for almost
forty days, so he's going to be able to play.
But if you're asking me minutes and effectiveness, I mean,
let's face it, Kristocks, for Zingis has a very limited
playoff resume as it is. We just haven't seen a
ton of him in the playoffs, and we've certainly never
(27:57):
seen him on this stage. So all long when the
Celtics were rolling, the talk was always and the Celtics
just get Porzingis or sixteen wins in the playoffs and
then they didn't even have him for two rounds, so
now they only really need him for four. They got
to win four more games to win the title. And
it's astounding when you do the map and think about it.
(28:19):
Since Larry Bird retired, this franchise has only won one
title in thirty one years. Like they are, you know,
it's been a long time they've had sustained the kind
of sustain success that Celtics fans expect. But they did
four more wins and they get this championship. And Porzingis
(28:41):
is going to be a huge factor in this series
because I do think Dallas will try to attack him
at the other end to see how sturdy he is.
But look, he has to shake off. He hasn't played
in thirty eight days. That's a lot of rough to
chip away.
Speaker 1 (28:56):
He's on Twitter at the Steinline. That is at the Steinline.
Checkout this League Uncut Mark's podcast as well. Mark is
always thanks for preview in the finals. We'll talk to
you as the final goes on. Enjoy all right, guys,
talk to thanks Mark. There it goes Mark Stide. You
know that's the thing is I asked myself that today
when I was thinking about the finals, I think about
certain things. I'm thinking about Porzingis, and I go, how
(29:18):
am I Am I gonna root for him as a
Nick fan? Or am I not gonna root for him?
Like what? Am I gonna us him to be bad?
Or am I gonna root for him because I picked
the Celtics to win? Am I gonna root for Porzingis
to do well?
Speaker 4 (29:30):
Like?
Speaker 1 (29:30):
I don't know? And it's weird. I never I never
say anything like I don't know on the radio because
I know everything. But I know what it's gonna be is.
It's gonna be one of those things where I'm gonna
turn on the game tomorrow and when Porzingis plays and
does something, I'll know how I feel. Like I knew
he was guy. I knew he's gonna do that songs.
I don't know, but I know when I watch a game,
(29:51):
it's just gonna come up organically how I'll feel about Porzingis.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Now the you want him to have a nice round
plus minus and by that I mean zero, not helping him,
not hurting him.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
That means for your Celtics.
Speaker 3 (30:04):
Pick, he's not having a negative impact, and for your
Knicks fandom, he's not giving you the pangs of what
could have been.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
That's what you want.
Speaker 3 (30:13):
Whatever the stats are fine plus minus zero, that's how
you solved that issue. No, it's funny because you know
there was the pause, you know in whatever technology and stuff.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
But the way you had set up the question.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
Your first one was like, well, you wanted to ask
the opposite side of that one anyway, So what am
I gonna do? Jump in and ask the opposite side?
Nor it was your two part question.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
But anyway, I have one question for mister Mellon in
twenty seven parts.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
Yes, that's kind of where you're at in this process,
but it is I can't wait till we actually get
on the court, you know, tell all his points about
the execution for the Celtics.
Speaker 1 (30:48):
Well, it wasn't pretty, boy. It was a lot prettier
than what.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
Indiana did in the final minutes, wasn't it.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
We're almost there telling you almost there both, they're all
both there right now? Where are we? We're about to
find out what's trending in the wide world of sports
from Brian Fenley, who has a three game Mets sweep
to lead off.
Speaker 7 (31:05):
With, Well, I would do that, Jason, although we do
have two games in progress. So from what I've learned
at sports radio updates school to trade school, that takes
about six months. They want me to start with the
games that are still going on and then get to
the completed games.
Speaker 8 (31:19):
Is that okay?
Speaker 1 (31:20):
With you four seconds left?
Speaker 8 (31:24):
I take that as a yes.
Speaker 7 (31:25):
All right, so the Oaklan Aes right now, we're leading
to Sevurope.
Speaker 8 (31:29):
Seventy eight seconds okay.
Speaker 7 (31:30):
I will be using my fingers and toes to count
down to nothing.
Speaker 8 (31:34):
The Oakland A's are leading the Seattle Mariners.
Speaker 7 (31:36):
That's in the top of the eighth as the Athletics,
by the way, they had a perfect game going six
and one third innings. That would be Joey Estes and
in the end of the seventh inning he gave up
his first hit. But right now it's A's two and
the Mariners nothing. The only other game that is going
on currently is in Anahon. The La Angels have a
(31:57):
three to two edge against the San Diego Padres. All right, now,
we'll get to the completed games. And I do want
to make Jason Smith happy, so I will lead with
the Mets and what they did here in terms of
the completed games, looting, what they did against the Nationals.
Speaker 8 (32:12):
Here, here's the.
Speaker 7 (32:13):
One two pitch swinging a liner to second, caught by
a diving at Glaciers.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
Put it in the box.
Speaker 3 (32:19):
That's the Kapper on a three game SERI sweep by
the New York Mets over the Nationals here in Washington.
Speaker 8 (32:26):
Well, there you have it.
Speaker 7 (32:27):
That's Mets Radio Network nine to one the final score.
As mentioned, the Dodgers lose a second straight, so they
lose the series.
Speaker 8 (32:33):
In Pittsburgh against the Pirates ten to six.
Speaker 7 (32:35):
The final there, James Paxton on the bumper of the
Dodgers picked up the loss. He didn't make it out
of the second end and gave up seven runs in
the second and choey Otani did come up with the
home run.
Speaker 8 (32:46):
So according to our.
Speaker 7 (32:48):
Executive producer Justin Frosberg, it was like a win for
the Dodgers just because Choyo Tani was able to go
yard in the game. The Yankees nine to five. They
won against the Twins. Aaron Judge had five RBI. The
Blue Jays win in a walk off with a single
in the bottom of the nine three to two against
the Orioles White Sox, they suffer their thirteenth straight loss.
(33:09):
They did have thirteen hits, so I guess that's something.
But they do lose seven to six of the Cubs
and a walk off in the bottom of the ninth
as well thanks to a late home run Tigers. They
lose nine to one to the Rangers. We also saw
a game between the Phillies and the Brewers where the
Phillies won two nothing.
Speaker 8 (33:26):
Also wins for.
Speaker 7 (33:27):
The Reds, the Cardinals, the Red Sox, and lastly Guys.
One other game to mention, the Giants say goodbye to
a six game losing streak by beating up on the
Diamondbacks nine to three. Wilmer Flores had a Grand Slam
in the game. With that, let's get it back to
Mike Carmen and Jason Smith, who's thinking about a grand
(33:50):
Slam that he's gonna eat at Denny's after the show.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Grand Slam at Denny's. Good nice, Thank you very much,

this content out for you each and every single night.
Now again, we have that crazy WNBA story coming your
way in about ten minutes. But when I saw this
(35:34):
news today, it just hit me. I now know what
the next ted Lasso is going to be. Okay, now,
no with that, with it, there's no doubt in my mind.
I can you bet on a television show being a hit?
Can you bet on a TV show being a hit?
I don't, okay? Can you like, is there a thing
like we got to talk Todd Ferman about that? But
can I bet that it's hit? Like what would the
what would the condition be about it being a hit?
(35:56):
Certain number of downloads or watch them? But I don't know.
But I will tell you this. There's a new show
that's gonna hit Hulu that was announced not too long
ago based on the Eli Manning Chad Powers skit where
Eli Manning dressed up in a funny mustache and a
wig and tried to walk on at Penn State. And
it was this whole fun bit where because they have
(36:17):
a day where you can walk on and coaches judge
people as they come to try to walk on, and
sometimes guys make the team. Obviously, Eli Manning shows up
and he does pretty well. Some of the coaches know,
some of the coaches don't. It's a pretty funny bit. Well,
the show was announced on Hulu where that's gonna be
the TV show where Glenn Powell, who is kind of
having a big moment now in Hollywood, is going to
(36:41):
be Chad Powers. And it was announced today Steve's On
is going to be the coach, right, Steve's On, He's
gonna play the likable coach. And Steve's on is really funny, dude.
So the way the show is, it's gonna be. I
think he gets kicked off his team. He's a big,
hotshot quarterback. He gets kicked off or banned from college
(37:03):
football whatever it is, for gambling, and he joins like
this smaller college football team like in the South, like
under an assumed name and different identity. And that's the
whole bit. Like, that's the whole show. And I can
already tell this is the next Ted Lasso, Right, you
have a guy, a star who's having a moment. In
Glen Powell, you have the same kind of fish out
(37:23):
of water formula. You have the big forward momentum of
he's gonna try to fool everybody. You have what people love,
and that's watching teams win or lose on TV. How
much everybody lived and died when Zava joined AFC Richmond,
and when they won games and when they lost games,
and when they got relegated, when they made it back up.
It just seems to have all the hallmarks that you
(37:44):
need for that hit show. It checks all the boxes.
And now obviously you're gonna need a big cast to
come in and win you over, because that's the best
thing that Ted Lasso had was top to bottom. The
actors were perfection, Like they was casting perfectly. But so far,
I like what I've heard, Like Glenn paw was a
huge dude right now and Steve's on is funny, and
this is going to be the next Ted laugh.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
I'm telling you only we're talking about overnight sensations. And
then you go and look at Glenn Powell's IMDb and like, ah,
he's been around a minute. I'm going all the way
back to the Great Debaters with Denzel Washington years ago,
but with Steve's on, do we have a tie in
since he was in one of the Planet of the
(38:25):
Apes movies where he's having flashbacks while he's on the sideline, and.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
That that helps.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
I don't know his character, you know, the Apes, I
don't know, but no, the opportunity here is certainly huge.
Those the Eli Manning clip was pretty damn funny when
they did that a while ago, and then it got
overplayed because well, that's what happens. But it's it's got
a good premise. Powell's likable, Steve's On's been the crazy
(38:54):
dad and a million things as well, so it works
at least for the base of it. But to your point, yeah,
there's there's gotta be an eclectic team. It's kind of
like having Rice Iiphens as your kicker, you know, and things,
or Robert Loja as your coach and necessary roughness. I mean,
there's gotta be a lot of stuff that comes together
(39:14):
to really make this work.
Speaker 4 (39:18):
First time the Clippers have played in June.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
Oh, well played prospered. That's pretty good. Justin that's a
good one, right there. That's a good one. I like that.
That's a really good one. No, you know, you know,
like like receive fawns, you know, before he was a lizard. Uh.
I think my favorite part was when he goes out
to kick the field goal and John Madden just goes
(39:41):
I think the guy smoking on the field like that,
finishing a cigarette right before you make the kicking, smoking
on the field, nodding hill. He's a legend. And you know,
but Chad Powers, it just has that vibe. It's got
that same thing that and there's such a void because
as much as people love ted las so, they hate
that it's over right, Like, Okay, did that show end
(40:03):
too early? It probably did, and there's still such a
desire for some kind of programming like that. You know.
Hulu said, hey, let's fill that void right now with
something that is very similar, different show, you know, different
obviously different story, but still fish out of water, likable lead.
You know, we gotta make sure it's funny, which we
feel like we can hit the right notes with this
(40:23):
movie and this can be the next ted Lasso.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
No, it's look, sports stories like this always sell. I mean,
go back to even the dramas, your Friday night lights
and whatever else. I mean, you can draw a lot
of legs because all the parallels to the struggles of
everyday life, and now you add the comedic aspect to it,
and all the situations you can have with this guy's
he tries to hide his identity.
Speaker 1 (40:45):
It's brilliant. Yeah, I mean really, I mean, I don't know.
Is it gonna be like ten years older than everybody?
Is it gonna be like three years like actually gonna
be thirty five years old playing college football? Like that'd
be awesome if he's like thirty five and he's still playing. Now, see,
that's what I needed to do. Exit out bouta Fresca,
Exit swollen down the Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Carmon coming up next, as promised, that crazy
(41:08):
story out of the WNBA. This is Fox Sports Radio.
