The Government has made it easier for borrowers to access emergency finance in wake of Cyclone Gabrielle.

To qualify, borrowers will have to have been affected by the bad weather that hit the upper North Island between January and February.

The emergency relief exemptions will apply to individuals seeking an overdraft or home loan worth up to $10,000.

NZ Herald Wellington business editor Jenee Tibshraeny says the new regulations are still being fine-tuned, because people in Hawke's Bay originally didn't qualify for the scheme until Cyclone Gabrielle hit.
