New Kiwibank data says New Zealanders have proven reluctant to open their wallets over the last few months.
Household electronic card spending fell 9.1% in the first quarter of this year.
While it's not unusual for consumer spending to slow down after the holidays, the bank says this was still a noticeably weak result.
