(00:45):
should be. I'm Cavino out here in Los Angeles with
super producer Danny G on the phones. He's still getting situated,
so I'll do my best. Danny G. Yeah, Yeah, Good
morning nation. Yeah, We're gonna talk some sports today, all right,
of course, Joel on the ones and twos on a Glockenspiel,
Spotty Boy on the videos at Covino and Rich Let's

(01:06):
get interactive, let's get involved, Let's have a good day.
It's day three of the Dan Slam. We got one
more show, big holiday week. Super excited for it. Rich
is out there in Texas. How's it going, hop along Dicky?

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeaha'na. We're gonna talk some fireworks, We're gonna talk some movies.
We're gonna talk some NBA.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
You know, Hey, don't over promise because we've got prizes
to give away. And we got to do midweek major
the biggest stories in the world of sports and pop culture.
We do it every midweek. Are they midweek or major?
So there's a lot to get to today.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Oh, we're gonna talk baseball, We're gonna talk some cookouts.
We're gonna get to everything.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
But I think that out that required a Howard Dean
scream at the end of that.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yeah yeah, uh you know, I was, by the way,
speaking to which if you're a little tired, that's calling
uh you call that a Joe Biden. Did you see
he said he almost fell asleep at the debate?

Speaker 3 (02:01):
No?

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Was he see this for real? No?

Speaker 3 (02:05):
You know why? Because I am a little tired after
doing Dan Patrick. It those our schedule off. For as
fun as it is, I love doing this three hours
of awesome and it's always a great time, but it
throws off our our regular schedule. Normally we're on from
two to four on the west, five to seven on
the east. So I mean, if something happens, there's a

(02:25):
good chance I fell asleep.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
So again, not to get political, people hate.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
That sounds a little political to me.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
No, because he said, Biden said, hey, man, I almost
fell asleep on stage at the debate. He said he
just had traveled a lot internationally that week. He didn't
listen to his team who said Joe rest up for
the debate, and he said they were because he almost
fell asleep.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
And he had a cold and he's one hundred and
eighty eight years old. Look enough of the excuses. Yeah,
just bring it next time, that's all. Well, listen, bring
it next time.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
I know that when we do the Dan Patrick Show,
it's a hell of a lot of fun and honor.
But you're right, it does throw off the schedule. I'm
up late last night because I can't fall asleep, but
I want to fall asleep because we got to wake
up early for Dan. And you ever watched that. I
don't think you did Season one of Your Honor.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
I saw the first few episodes. I remember it being
extremely intense.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Dude, intense is not the word. And then season two
came out, and for some reason it was on Showtime
and maybe I was busy watching football with something else.
There was like I'm busy with my kids.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
That's the show with Brian Cranston.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah. Yeah, And I was like, oh crap, look, season
two is on Netflix. I've been binging the hell out
of that this week. It's so good. It's so intense.
But you know when you watch something so serious about
murder and crime and every episode you're freaking hearts beating
where that can't be the last thing you watch before
you go to bed.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
Yeah, but you're a little extreme, but I understand the feeling.
I understand the feeling. What was the show spot where
Rich said it was like traumatizing and he couldn't sleep
because it was so scary, And then we watched it,
We're like, is he serious about that? It was kind
of like Stranger Things or something like that, which was like,
I just I.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Couldn't even sleep. I was terrified, and we were like,
come on, man.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
We watched it and we laughed like he was like
making a big deal about this. This was the show
he couldn't what was it?

Speaker 2 (04:30):
You know that Disney cartoon? No, what was it? Man?

Speaker 3 (04:33):
It was some show so long. There was some show
Rich was all about, and he's like, don't let your
kids watch, man.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
I just couldn't.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
I had to watch something stupid. I remember you brought
this up recently, So again, that's all relative, but I
do know the feeling, like we can all relate. But
I don't know if Your Honor is gonna make me
feel that way. But there could be some some scary
psychological movie, like scary thriller, some scary movie, and then
I start feeling some sort of spirit in my room

(05:02):
and I start feeling weird vibes that could get me going.
It just depends on what you're watching.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
If you're watching some alien documentary, or you're watching, like
I said, Your honor Or back in the day, Marty,
if you're watching Ozark and like, you know, there's some
intense ending of an episode, I can't then just be
like all right, bedtime, like I know, I know what
it was, and people are gonna crack up laughing.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
What was it? Rich came in one day and he's like.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
You know that feeling when you watch something terrible.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
And you just can't sleep, and they're like, yeah, what'd
you watch.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
He's like quid Games.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Oh that's right. He's like, don't let your kids watch,
don't watch at night, don't watch after midnight.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
He'll turn into a grimlin. It was terrible, and we
all watched it. Like I mean it was.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
It was pretty gruesome at points, but they didn't give
me nightmares the way you were describing. But but to
be fair, I do know the feeling where you need
almost a palate cleanse. You need a palate cleanse of sorts,
just to refresh your your mind and go to sleep peacefully.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
I get it.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
I get what you're saying.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
I needed a palate cleanse like you said. I mean
like earlier the night. Earlier in the night, I watched
my Mets jump out another game over five hundred, scoring
another five plus inning, five plus run inning, and extra inning.
So yesaid, it was a nice night. But I'm watching
Your Honor, which I didn't even want to recommend to
you because you don't listen to me anyway, but you

(06:28):
would love it, Brian Cranston. It's so intense, and I
know season two has been out a minute now, but
I'm watching that and then I'm like, I can't go
to sleep. My mind's moving a million to a million ways, even.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
After waking up five am on the West. For Dan Patrick,
I find that hard to believe. Danny g said the
same thing. Hey man, I was a little restless last night.
Couldn't fall sleeve. I was like how I was exhausted.
I was like Joe Biden. I was not an out
trying to watch was Oh you know what my girlfriend
on last night Family Affair. It's a new Netflix movie,

(07:03):
number one on Netflix, brand new, with Nicole Kidman and
Zach Effron.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Well, they have a yeah, they they have.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
I've never seen tighter faces in my life all in
one game.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
That is true. There's a lot of tight there's a
lot of botox in that room.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Yeah, but Rich, I had like like a cartoon toothpicks
up my eyes, you know, like like Tom and Jerry,
they're just trying to stay awake. I just I was
trying so hard. I had the exact opposite feeling that
you had yesterday.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
I was out. I was snoring throughout the whole movie.
That's the movie where zac Efron's like a superstar and
he ends up with his assistance mom.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
Right, yeah, yeah, yeah, And I'll tell you this. I
could wrap this up. Two seconds started off pretty entertaining.
Halfway through I was snoozing.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Well I could have saw that coming. You're talking about
two picks in your eyes.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
But it's really slowed down. That's my point though, And
I was tired, so.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
I watched the game that I binged, your honor. So
there's a point of me bringing this all up besides,
you know, relating to everyone that knows that feeling of ya.
I can't watch some crime documentary and then be like,
all right, can I? So I'm like, all right, what
can I put on this nonsense? Like something light that
will make me laugh that It's just there's no way

(08:16):
there's anything serious about I'm like, oh, look what's on Netflix?

Speaker 3 (08:19):
You know what? This reminds me of?

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Two.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
This reminds me of rich and I know a lot
of people that do this. Their last bite has to
be something delicious on their entree. They save their last
bite because they don't want that feeling of I don't know,
a piece of broccoli to be their last bite. They
wanted to be the tasty, savory or sweet whatever. And

(08:44):
if they have the last bite and it's some sort
of piece of broccolini. They're upset by that.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
The example would be we were we were in Vegas
for Fox Sports Radio. You and I were covering a
fight and I had my last bite, my last bite
of like a delicious my last bit of like a
delicious filet mignon, and I need my palate clan. I think,
like Danny your spot or someone said like, hey, you

(09:11):
want to try chucken palm, and I took a bite
and I'm like, ah, damn it, this ruin the last
taste in my mouth. So, yes, maybe I'm very particular,
but yes.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
That's what I'm trying to point out here. You're a
little bit on the wack of do.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
Something visionist history too, because it wasn't us offering it,
it was you saying, are you gonna finish that? And
then you took up what was left on the plate,
and then you're like, damn it, I shouldn't have done that.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
Danny. Maybe you're right, but there is a point to
this whole story other than the relatability of not wanting
to go to sleep after watching some creepy crap. So
you're honor super intense I'm like, I need something else
to watch on Netflix. There it is. I was like, perfect,
that's my boy with Adam Sandler Vanilla Ice Andy Samberg,

(09:58):
one of the funniest yet dumbest movies in the last
decade plus. And I put it on and as I
put it on, there it is the guy we're filling
in for. I forgot that Dan Patrick played Randall Morgan
with a big poofy blonde wig. He was like the
entertainment reporter that was there trying to get the story.

(10:19):
And I'm like, man, what has Dan Patrick been in
besides these Sandler movies? Then I go on Dan Patrick's IMDb.
Let me tell you, boys, we're filling in for a
comedic legend.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
Yeah, he's in a ton of Sandler films. You know,
because the same man, much like you and I grew
up watching Dan Patrick on Sports Center, you know, he
grew up with him, was a fan and Navy King
pals along the way somehow.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
But he's a lot of movies. Not only is the
great Dan Patrick, you know, the best in the radio
sports biz. I looked up Damn Patrick's IMDb and he
was in Hustle, he was in Hub Halloween American Vandal
brock Buyer, The Ridiculous Six. He was on Entourage blended

(11:07):
with Sandler grown Ups, That's My Boy, Jack and Jill
grown ups the first one, Chuck and Larry benchwarmers, playmakers
like God. He was in Clerk's water Boy Basketball like
I mean, we're talking like not like one cameo. It
made me realize that.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
DP that just shows us, the man, how much we
pail in comparison. To be honest, we haven't even made
a Sharknado yet. This guy's in all these sweet ass
Sandler films. The thing is, I thought that was Jim
Lampley in the That's My Boy movie with that blonde puffador.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
He had that gray wiggy had uh. It's funny as hell.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
But yeah, I've seen those clips. I've seen Dan Patrick
with that wigan from That's My Boy, but I've never
seen That's My Boy. And that's a stellar cast because Yo,
v I p let's kick it. I'm a big Vanilla
Ice guy.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
Vanilla Ice is the you know, he's like the hand
them comic relief. But the whole point of that movie,
if you've ever said, was Adam Sandler. And it's pretty
vulgar and funny, like it's it's a very hard arm
funny comedy. You'd like it.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
Are you sure you didn't?

Speaker 2 (12:13):
Sandler is uh in this movie, which I think is
over a decade old. Now, Danny, have you ever seen
That's My Boy?

Speaker 3 (12:19):
Or No? No is the one? Just for reference again,
you've seen Dan Patrick with this blonde white wig on,
and that's what he wears in this movie. I've seen
that Adam Sandler. Adam Sandler is like a little teenage boy.
That's how the movie starts. And he gets his super

(12:40):
hot teacher pregnant in an inappropriate relationship.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
So it just it's he grows up to be like,
you know, sort of like a misfit at Andy Sandberg's kid.
It's really funny. It's like a dumb, funny Sandler movie.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Again, we interviewed Andy Sandberg for that movie when that
movie came out. Yeah, I remember, and because I remember
the premise when you when you talk about it, but
I've never seen it.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Maybe I want to tonight if you need a pale
you want to if you want to throw it back
on a way back Wednesday, and you need something about this.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
If their team sickens you tonight, like the Yankees sicken me, right,
Yankees can't even beat the weak ass Reds. Give me
a break. Elie de la Cruz strutting into third, moon
walks into third, jog's into third, hitting triples like it's
his job.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
It kind of is.

Speaker 3 (13:33):
But when your team disgusts you and you need a
palette cleanse, don't watch that new Zach Effron movie watch Yeah,
because his abs will sicken you. Watch That's My Boy
on Netflix, starring the great Dan Patrick.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Don't worry if Elie de la Cruz does it hit
a triple, He'll get to third base by just easily
stealing two bases anyway.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
By the way, you know how anything Aaron Judge hits
he destroys. Yeah, yep, every time Ellie de la Cruz
gets on base, it's like a double turns it into
a triple somehow. That dude is just too fast for baseball.
It's crazy to see. It's like a whole different level
when you watch it live. The same thing with Aaron Judge.
Ellie de la Cruz is just so electrics. It's ridiculous.

(14:18):
Should be a household name, just on how electric this
guy is. It's just that he's getting lost in Cincinnati
right now.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
Yeah. No, I watch a clip the other day that
it's quintessential Ellie da light cruise. Even though his career
is young. It was one of those you know, beat
out in a field, single stall, second stall, third, Stoll
home and I'm.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
Like, what within a minute, in a total of a minute,
he pulled the little league move in the big leagues.
So when your team upsets you because the Yankees again
lost to the Reds yesterday, the Yankees fan, you know,
watch something fun tonight like that.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
There you go.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
I'm a little envious of Dan Patrick's acting career, to
be honest, not that I want to be an actor,
but those are some fun movies. He's a part of.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
Listen. That's why sometimes we never want to take for
granted and we want to let we want to let
you know the DP audience that yo, it's an honor room.
Were fill in for Dan. We're big fans, just like
you guys are and Rich right here on Fox Sports Radio. Now,
I want to jump off the show with a story
about Klay Thompson because I feel like this is one

(15:24):
of those things that Kavino and I disagree on and
when we disagree, it could get heated, it could get fun.
But I'm just I'm always fascinated by Kavino's takes.

Speaker 3 (15:35):
I think we're gonna agree and disagree, not to what
are down the expectation here.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
We're feeling it for Dan Patrick step it up. He's
an actor.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
No, I know, I know. And the story involves Klay
Thompson's dad, who, as you guys know or maybe not no,
was an ex Laker. Okay, now Klay Thompson Golden State Warrior.
I think he's going to his twelfth season, been in
the league for a while, he's a veteran now at
this point. Really stunk it up at the end of

(16:05):
his last season. Danny g and I were talking about
that in the kitchen. We're like, yo, he was really
bad at the end of last year.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
What happened? I mean, dude, Draymond Green seemed like he
was crying about it. So maybe, you know, maybe maybe
he has more guest left in the tank, because Draymond
seemed like he was sort of bumped to see him go.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
Draymond Green said he did shed a tier or two.
Didn't try to talk him out of it, said, you know,
I'm proud of you, bro, And he said it's never
going to change what they accomplished or their friendship and
relationship moving forward. But Klay Thompson decided to say goodbye
to Draymond Green and Curry and the Golden State Warriors.
He took a three year deal fifty million with the Mavericks. Now, Maverick,

(16:46):
you may say why, or you may say, hey, look,
they all got what they got four right, they all
got four each, Clay, Draymond, Steph, they got four wins.
He's closer than all all of them now by making
this move, which again, if you look to last year
he seemed to be ready to make, seemed like something

(17:07):
was off, something was not right. He's closer to winning
another championship and creating his own path in the legacy
with the Mavericks. Look, you get one career for the
most part, most people you know, especially in the NBA. Yeah,
so if he could win another one with that squad,
he's closer with the Mavericks than he is with the

(17:30):
Golden State Warriors. At least at this time, he's closer
than Draymond and Steph. So it's a decision he made.
He seems comfortable and confident with it. I'm sure it's
not easy. That's a big decision to make, especially when
you're synonymous with one team and winning like that and

(17:51):
those other players splash brothers. I mean, that's tough. It's
tough to move on and say goodbye, and all you
want in that moment is probably probably the support of
your close friends and family. He had the support of
his teammates, who were said to see him go, and
the story is that his dad was extremely disappointed that

(18:12):
he chose the Mavericks over the Lakers.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
We listen, You're so right about the rarity of a
guy sticking with a team. We just can't get used
to that, because you know, you grew up and there
were guys that were franchise dudes. You played on one
team your whole careers. That is old news, that's a
thing of the past. Yesterday, we argued about yadi Air
Molina later in the show, and I was talking to

(18:37):
my wife about it, and you know, like I said,
her family's Cardinals fans. I'm like, yeah, he played almost
twenty years just for the Cardinals. That doesn't happen in
any sport anymore. And when you look at Clay, it's
time to move on and here's the headline. Like you said,
Clay Thompson, his dad was disappointed that he picked the

(18:58):
Mavericks over the Lake. I'm not feeling in a very
congratulatory mood right now. Michael Thompson told Serious x NBA
Radio he wanted his son to go where he played
the Lakers. Now, Clay said, there's financial savings. The difference
between living in Texas where I'm at right now and
California was a big deal. Even when you're making millions,

(19:21):
you do have to think about those things.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
And you have to think about did he want to
play with Lebron? Was that appetizing or enticing in any
weird way? Or did he stay away because he didn't
want to play quote unquote as we jokingly say for
Lebron in La. Did that have something to do with it?
Does La not have the pull it once had as
a city as a franchise or did he really just

(19:44):
see savings Dallas, chance to win, good squad, he could
be an impactful player there. Like Either way, he did
what was right for him, And now his dad is
saying he's disappointed because he was praying. Talk about pressure
his dad said he was praying every night that Clay
ended his career where he played as a Laker.

Speaker 2 (20:08):
I picture your mom, Cavino, I picture your mom being
like Steve, and that's like something your mom would say,
like I was praying for you, Steve, and like this
dude's praying that in some place for the team he
played for. I'm really disappointed. So hey, let me post
the question. We'll take your feedback at eight seven, seven,
nine nine on Fox. Cavino on Rich and for the
actor Dan Patrick, the actor I forgot how much of

(20:30):
a resume he had. Here's the question. When you make
decisions in life, your wife or husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, job, location,
what house you buy, Like how much do you run
these things by your folks? Is that something you do?
Is it something that you say really like? I'll give
you one example again and then we'll take your feedback

(20:52):
here on Fox Sports Radio. When you buy a new car,
I feel like you were shocked when I told you,
Oh yeah, I think recently I said, oh, I forgot
to tell my dad I bought a new car. And
you're like, you didn't tell them?

Speaker 3 (21:06):
How does that not come up?

Speaker 2 (21:08):
So the decisions in life, what do you run by
your parents as a grownup. We'll take your feedback. Next
your buds, Cavin on rich In for Dan Patrick right

(22:41):
we're talking Klay Thompson. We're gonna get the prizes and
giveaways and fireworks and more. But Klay Thompson right now.
As you know, Michael Thompson, his dad, longtime color commentator
for the Lakers, played for the Showtime Late from eighty
seven to ninety one, won two NBA championships in that span.

(23:04):
Michael Thompson for the most part, is a Laker, right,
I mean, he's known for being a Lakers. So he's
disappointed when Clay chooses the Mavericks. But now he's on
serious x sim Our other stumping grounds are old stumping grounds,
saying that he was really disappointed, as you can assess

(23:27):
that he chose the Mavericks over the Lakers. He says
it was close, came down to the Lakers and the MAVs.
With the MAVs went out, you know him, he was
hoping and praying he'd finish his career where he played
with the Lakers. And I feel like that's a lot
of pressure for a parent to put on a kid.
He does say in the same breath, he's a grown man,

(23:47):
thirty four years of age, just like we were thirty
four at one time, and our fathers used to give
us advice, and you know, we would choose our own
path and that's fine. That's what life is supposed to be.
So he's saying in one breath, look, yeah, he's a veteran.
He's played in the league as his twelfth season or whatever,
over ten years, thirty four years old. He's is old

(24:09):
man makes his own decisions. But I'm really disappointed he
didn't listen to me and finish out with the Lakers.
I'm sure Klay Thompson had a bunch of reasons as
to why he chose the Mavericks, So maybe he's not
even just letting us know.

Speaker 4 (24:22):
About If I can jump in as the Lakers fan
on the show The Lakers honestly, Yeah, they need some
players to sign, not Klay Thompson though he's a shooter
and he wasn't doing that very well at the end
of last season. But yeah, he might still have something
left in the tank, especially with you know, a new team.
The Lakers need size. They were looking for help at center.

Speaker 3 (24:45):
I think they need size in youth too.

Speaker 2 (24:47):
No youth as well.

Speaker 4 (24:48):
Well, they got that in the draft obviously with Connect
true and he's a shooter. They need size so that
Ad can play more power forward. So I think Laker
fans have been looking at that as well as a
youth movement.

Speaker 2 (25:02):
Yeah, Lakers could use Like you said, they got Connect,
but if they got Clay, and Clay was sort of
back to a little bit of the old Clay and
a big man. If they got one more shooter and
a big man, then the Lakers are talking about competing.
If he asked me, and right now I'm reading more
of the quotes from Michael Thompson Covino, he said, listen,

(25:23):
I tried to sell them on the Lakers. Obviously. I
tried to sell it. Obviously, the right thing for me
to do is to try to bring him to LA.
I felt like It was the correct thing for me
because I really believe in the franchise. The franchise has
been so good to me and my family, including Clay.
He grew up a Lakers fan, idolizing Kobe, so he
rarely laid it on thick. So I ask you, big

(25:44):
decisions in your life, little decisions in your life, how
much do you care or I guess you would say
take your parents' words into consideration if you're naming your kid,
if you're buying a house, if you're dating someone new. Like,
I have a question. Do you think most people tell
their parents before they get engaged? Like, yeah, Dad, I'm

(26:07):
gonna pop the question.

Speaker 3 (26:08):
Well, look, I'm saying yes, But I am the same
guy that called my dad in the middle of the
night to tell to tell him I got married in Vegas.
He's like, you what, And I'm like, just let mom know.
I know she's going to be extremely disappointed, though, but
they had seen, they had met her. Yeah, I was
already dad, but I didn't tell them. I just did

(26:28):
it right. But I do think that your parents deserve
that respect. I'm not saying you need to listen to
what they say or do what they say, but you
should factor in their opinions. They've lived it, they've done it,
they have experience in life. They're your parents now. Rich
and I Here's why I said, we're going to agree

(26:50):
and disagree. I think we both agree that Michael Thompson
put a lot of pressure on Klay Thompson, the fact
that he's coming out publicly saying he's really disappointed in
the son's decision, which wasn't a hard one. I mean,
which was a hard one to make. I don't know
that rubs me a weird way. I do respect Michael
Thompson's honesty here, but I think all his son wants

(27:13):
is some support. So I think you and I agree
on this whole. Michael Thompson's reaction to Klay Thompson. That's
a little oof, right. Oh yeah, we agree there. But
I think where we disagree, and this is where we
take your phone calls at eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox. Where we disagree is Rich doesn't run anything

(27:34):
by his folks. Rich has this attitude of he's his
own man, who cares. He's not a little boy anymore.
And call me a man boy, call me a mama's boy.
Another Sandler film. Oh, yeah, Mom, a whole not as
grandma's boy. Call me grandma's boy.

Speaker 2 (27:49):
I don't care.

Speaker 3 (27:49):
Yeah, every decision you mentioned before was a major life decision,
or like a big decision. I'm not calling my mom
at the grocery sto or should I get cocoa or
fruity pebbles. No, that's not it. But you talked about,
you know, before you get married, before you purchase a home,
before you name your child. You mentioned these are all

(28:12):
big decisions. Why wouldn't you run it by You're not
asking them for their permission, You're just running it by them.
Discussing things. You're not always going to get the great
feedback that you want. I remember my mom telling me
I'm not I don't want to call anybody out, all right, fine,
I will. I remember calling them out. Hey, Mom, I'm

(28:36):
thinking about naming my daughter Ava. At the time. I
don't know, maybe that was a hot name. Ava.

Speaker 6 (28:45):
She was like.

Speaker 3 (28:45):
Ava, that's an ugly person's name, and she was more
she was more playton than that dude. She went off,
that's the worst name ever. I'm like, jeez, man, I
probably should have kept it myself, because now she ruined
it and I ended up not naming my daughter everybody
because she ruined it for me, and I chose Melody.
And after that, I didn't tell her because I'm like,

(29:07):
you know what, I'm not even gonna tell her what
I would name my kid because she's gonna ruin it
for me and I'm just gonna do my own thing.
And I named her Melody as a result. So I
get the fact. I get the idea of making your
own decisions. What I don't get is how you don't
run some of these things by your parents just in
conversation if you're lucky enough to still have them around,
because I bet you anything, people who don't have their

(29:29):
parents around would give everything they have just to have
that one conversation about those major life decisions. Hey, I'm
thinking about getting a divorce. Hey, I'm thinking about, like
I said, even getting a new car. Those are just
things you run by your parents because they're your parents.
And rich does not vibe into that at all. And
what age did that stop?

Speaker 2 (29:50):
Though?

Speaker 3 (29:50):
Did I did it ever start?

Speaker 2 (29:52):
I think from I don't know about you, Kabino, I
felt like once I was out of college and working,
as much as I I respect my parents, and I
talked to my dad a couple of times a week.
You know, I have a great relationship with my dad.

Speaker 3 (30:05):
In a way, Rich, I don't know how much you do.
You buy a new car and you forget to tell
your dad. On my way home, my family probably the
top people. I'm calling Yo, Yeah, sweet new ride.

Speaker 2 (30:19):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 3 (30:20):
It kind of deals to get. I would even call
my dad maybe before I signed the deal, like, here's
the deal, sound good to you? Not that again, I'm
not asking permission. It's just like the run by I'm saying,
but it's because I need a co sign it.

Speaker 2 (30:36):
Yo.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
And again Rich Rich always paints me out to be
like that's baby boy mentality, and guys you might agree,
but Rich is like, nah, man, I don't. I just
do my own thing.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
A great example would be the uh the famous hawk
to a girl. Canino's first thought was huh what would
her parents think? And my first thought is never what
would my mom or dad think? Respect I don't live
my life with the thought in the back of my
head what would gregor Marianne think? I just don't. I
love them, but I don't make decisions ever based on

(31:10):
what they would think. Is I'll be honest, I think
for all the good advice they've given me, I think
they've given me equally bad advice at times, because I think,
as Clay chose Dallas because that was right for him,
his dad can't see that path. A great example would
be when my wife and I were looking for houses,
my dad tried to discourage me.

Speaker 3 (31:30):
You're not asking for permission, You're just you're just running.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
It by him.

Speaker 3 (31:34):
So what's your relationship all surface about? What picks you're
gonna make this weekend? When it comes to gambling, Like,
there's no real conversation. What do you talk to your
mom about the weather? You don't you ever bring up
anything important?

Speaker 2 (31:50):
I mean I do talk a lot about my gambling
picks with my dad.

Speaker 3 (31:54):
Again, and I'm not criticizing anyboy's relationship, but I think
it all comes down to the type of relationship you
have with you, your parents or family, whoever this may be.
And that's gonna be different for everybody. And I do
get that. But I'm not the weird guy as you
painted out all the time for running those things by

(32:14):
my parents. You're still there, there, You're still there, offspring.

Speaker 2 (32:19):
But what about what if? Again? What if you are
more risky than your parents or you guys have different ideologies.
My example I was gonna give was when my wife
and I were looking for houses. My dad was like
adamant about like, oh, I would not buy a house
that you have to renovate and redo them. Like yeah, Dad,
but I think, like we're getting this price and if

(32:40):
we put this much money into it. We've talked about it,
but he was like, I want to do it, and
it ended up being like one of my best decisions. I,
you know, moving to La I don't know if I
would do that. I bought an investment property in Colorado.
I remember my dad being like, oh, terrible idea and
like and ended up being a good idea. Like so
some times, when let's say you're a riskier person, I

(33:04):
don't know, I just feel like sometimes like uh, I'm
I'm on the side of clay here where it's like
for you man, I.

Speaker 4 (33:11):
Think Rich runs stuff behast his parents after he's already
made the decision.

Speaker 3 (33:14):
After yeah, after, but like again, like just something simple
like the car. Rich was talking about his new car
and he's like, oh, I I didn't even tell my
dad I got a new car. I'm like that's a
major purchase. Dude, It's not like you bought a pair
of jeans. You know, you don't got to run those
things by your parents. And again, it's not permission. Rich
always paints it out like you're asking permission. No one's
asking permission. I never call up my dad like, hey, Dad,

(33:37):
you think I should lease or or no. I would
actually say, hey, here's the least, here's the here's the finance.
What do you what do you think? It doesn't mean
I'm gonna do what they think, but I do run
it by them just to see because maybe there's a
comforting answer there that backs up my my decisions. Rich,
who's the first person you called after you got the
dup Scott our boss? Because he's he kisses ass. That's

(33:59):
why get at that's something my dad, my dad, that's
a dad thing.

Speaker 2 (34:04):
You know, he's kissing as whys? But you know what
a great example again, these are these These are all
times where someone would maybe talk to a family member
or close friend. But the story goes back to Clay.
His dad said he's disappointed he chose Dallas over the Lakers.

Speaker 3 (34:22):
But Comino, Honestly, I think Clay's dad needs to chill
with that. And I say that respectfully because this is dad.
But when you make a life changing, tough decision the
way Clay did, all you want is support, and you
want that from your parents, the people closest to you.

Speaker 2 (34:41):
You don't want your dad publicly out there.

Speaker 3 (34:44):
Saying that you potentially made a decision he's not happy about.
You don't want even if he is. Clay's dad has
every right to feel every way he does, but you
keep that to yourself. Just for your kid, for your kid,
and just pray for the best. At that point, you're
not praying for your kid to play for the Lakers.
You're praying for whatever decision he makes. That's a selfish

(35:06):
way to me, to be honest, his dad was just
being selfish, you know. If we're being real about it
and right, not righteous right about it, you know he
should be now praying that his son made the best
decision for him, not that he's a Laker. Look, you
know who handle this well, Shaquille O'Neill. To my knowledge,
when you think of college, you think of Shaquille O'Neill.
Lsu right, Yeah, yeah, baby, And my daughter she had

(35:32):
a big choice to make. Well, she gonna play for
LSU of Florida.

Speaker 2 (35:37):
And she chose Florida.

Speaker 3 (35:39):
And I remember seeing a story like I was thinking,
man Shackson, Toby, I wasn't disappointed. I'm happy for my daughter.
He was extremely happy. Never even mentioned once that ah,
he really wanted her to, you know, follow in her
dad's footsteps. He was proud that she was choosing whatever
was right for her, even though it might sting a
little bit.

Speaker 2 (35:59):
Well, your thoughts, your feedback, we'll take it next. Cavino
and rich In for the Great Dan Patrick right here
live from the Mercedes Benz Studios on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (36:08):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific

and pop culture. Spotty's getting ready for that. Stick around
for that and prizes to give away. We're playing a
game Chipotle Worker or WNBA Player eight seven seven ninety nine.

(36:42):
On Fox. Is the number if you want to play later,
if you want to call and chime in. Now, we're
live from the Mercedes Benz Studios. I'm Steve Cavino. That
is Rich Davis. We're talking about Rich and I both
agree Michael Thompson's dad maybe was a little too honest
in his disappointment that his son shows the Mavericks over
the Lakers. But where we disagree is on the fact

(37:06):
that it's okay to run things by your parents at
any age.

Speaker 2 (37:12):
I didn't say it was wrong.

Speaker 3 (37:14):
I just say that it's one time I bring up
something like that, like just recently. I just thought of
two examples. Recently, we discussed family vacations because quarterback Zach
Wilson went on a family vacation with his young girlfriend.
She was wearing a skimpy bikini. I said, hey, no, fiance,
that's right, congratulations to them. Got engaged. Over the weekend,

(37:38):
we debated, no, no, no, Here's what I said. I said, Look,
she looks great, and there's a time and place for everything.
That's fine, But how do you feel if your wife
or fiance, your girlfriend was wearing a thong bikini in
front of your family, your parents on a family vacation, right. Look,
if you're on your own getaway, fine, but in front

(38:00):
of family and parents and we're just.

Speaker 2 (38:02):
Like, what do I care what my parents think? Oh?
My own man, fee.

Speaker 3 (38:06):
And only they're your parents, right, And then I'll lift
that you just get and then I'll say things like
only fans, like, I mean, come on, dude, would you.

Speaker 2 (38:16):
Start an only fans page? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (38:18):
Why not?

Speaker 2 (38:19):
I don't know what would your family think? What would
your parents say?

Speaker 3 (38:22):
Man?

Speaker 2 (38:22):
You care about your parents way too much? You see this,
I do my own thing, fee. Well yeah, listen, First
of all, I'm not starting only fans, but if I
wanted to.

Speaker 3 (38:32):
Fans, I thought you're opening your toes only page. I mean,
I do have great feet, But if.

Speaker 2 (38:36):
I if I were to do it, guess what I
want to care about? My dad's thoughts on more weird.

Speaker 3 (38:44):
Even though you're a grown adult, that's still your dad
and your I don't care attitude is more weird to
me than you make me out to be. For saying no,
it's just respect and out of respect and you're just
running it by them and you're just talking to them
because they're your parents. I don't think your dad, how
do you how would you feel if you were the
last to know when your daughter grows up that she

(39:05):
enrolled into some college, that she bought a new car,
that she did something major and you didn't even know
about it. No, it's different when I'm the dad.

Speaker 2 (39:12):
But I don't dad. I want my kids to tell
me everything. Well, there you go, so.

Speaker 3 (39:16):
I have their hold on clear. Rich doesn't mind if
his dad sees his wife in the throng. He doesn't
care at all because he doesn't mind.

Speaker 2 (39:28):
He doesn't care. I do what you want, Joe, come
over for a barbecue cookout. Let's do it, you know,
let's uh, let's take your feedback. Let's go to the phones. Cavino,
rich In for DP. Who do we got, Steve?

Speaker 4 (39:40):
Who we got Danny g Let's start with John in LA.
Wants to talk to you guys about Clay.

Speaker 3 (39:45):
All right, John in La, what do you think about
Clay Thompson? The whole father thing is decision? What's up?

Speaker 6 (39:50):
Man? Yeah, it's a shame that, uh that Clay is
not a Laker. But the reason why he's not a
Lakers because he despises JJ. Ready, because no one's talking
about it. The media is not talking about the main
point that the Warriors and the Clippers had like a
crazy rivalry for a long time, and JJ Reddick was

(40:11):
jj Rick was like Brayson Allen. Would anyone want to
play Brayson Allen once once? That dirty player you know
is done in the league. Uh No, So he chose
Jason Kidd over JJ Redick. It's very simple.

Speaker 3 (40:24):
I'll tell you this, man, I Danny g I'm sure
you have thoughts on that as a Lakers fan, but
I did insinuate that there has to be more stirring
this kool aid that meets the eye.

Speaker 2 (40:36):
You like that one.

Speaker 3 (40:37):
There has to be more that meets the eye, because
you should coin that everything was leaning towards Lakers. Grew
up a Lakers fan. Dad was a Laker color commentators.
Dad's pushing the Lakers, praying for the Lakers, and he
and it's the Lakers, and it's La and he chooses
the Mavericks. There's got to be more to it, in

(40:58):
my opinion, So I think there's truth. Some I don't
know what the truth is to what he's saying there.

Speaker 4 (41:02):
I also think more teams would have been salivating over
the prospect of getting the signing and trading for Clay.

Speaker 3 (41:10):
A sign and trade.

Speaker 4 (41:11):
If he had finished last season really strong, if he
had gone, you know, nine for twelve from the three
point line to end the season instead of that big zero,
then I think this would be a whole different story.
Right now, I don't feel like teams were necessarily lining up.

Speaker 2 (41:27):
I think we're not realizing that Klay Thompson is a
huge Shark Tank fan, huge Shark Tank fan, just loves
Mark Cuban so much.

Speaker 3 (41:36):
It's like, what what does mister wonderful have to do
with this? Maybe I don't know. I think there's something
going on. Maybe it's a Lebron thing. Maybe it's Reddick.
Maybe I don't know. Maybe he's like, I'm not doing
what my dad told me to do. Maybe he's a
defiant kid. Anyway, your thoughts, your parents, do they matter
when you make big decisions. We're gonna talk fireworks and
more Cavino and Rich and for Dan Patrick
