New Zealand finally made their move on their extradition treaty with Hong Kong, suspending it due to the controversial law China imposed.
Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters says the law goes against Chinese commitments to the international community.
Chinese foreign policy expert Marc Lanteigne told Kate Hawkesby New Zealand's delayed decision came down to them surveying the landscape.
"I think there was the need to have a look at exactly what was happening on the ground in Hong Kong, the specifics about what the national security law entailed before the decision was made by the New Zealand Government."
Mr Lanteigne notes China's swift and stern reaction shows they're not happy with New Zealand.
But he adds China likely expected this decision.
