Speaker 1 (00:00):
They are NFL champions. The Seattles he Hawks have one
Super Bowl forty eight.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
As part of our non stop coverage of the NFL,
this is Softy's weekly visit with Kevin Harlan.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
He's a pulldozer. He's a piece.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Brought to you by Twin Peaks in tuck Willa open
every Sunday morning, just in time for kickoff.

Speaker 4 (00:20):
He was like a pinball banging off.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Bunny's a twenty three.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yard catch it run catch every game, every bite and
every sip only a Twin Peaks Tuck Willa.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Hit the touchdown, hit the touchdown, hits grab by purse.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Now with Kevin, here's Softy Jacoby Brissette. Oh there was
the piss who is hit? The polo's free picked up
by Lawrence.

Speaker 5 (00:42):
Will they take it on?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yes, sir?

Speaker 6 (00:45):
To the house?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Touchdown, third down eleven. Here comes Night.

Speaker 7 (00:49):
Not to way again, lose, Here comes Lawrence ho he
smokes another touchdown by.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
The same guy. How about that? The same guy and
the same.

Speaker 7 (01:03):
Guy that joins us every Wednesday at five o'clock courtesy
at Twin Peaks Tuck Willa. The same guy with that
same silky smooth voice, The same.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Guy with that unbelievable work ethic.

Speaker 7 (01:16):
Who you heard right there doing the game for CBS
on Sunday with the Seahawks and Cardinals. Our friend Curtesy
at Twin Peaks, Tuck Willa, Kevin Harlan, how are you, pal.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Well, just stunned by the pressure from Knight, who was
getting a nice opportunity with some injuries and some shuffling
of the defense. And he's the one who jarred it
free both times. He really, you know, it's not that
big a deal, I guess to grab a loose ball
and have an entourage follow you.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
Into the end zone.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
But it does see a lot about night Right that
he got in there twice injured, that ball free and
then Lawrence being so alert, you know, vacuumed it in
took it in twice. You just don't see that very often.
And they smoked them, I mean they smoked them in everywhere.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
It was.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Good teams do that, and they're a good team. They're
I'm almost you never like to say it halfway through
the story, but they're elite. I mean, the quarterback is
at another level. They're running the ball well defensively, you know,
Darnold told us a real interesting thing he said. He say,
you know what is making me more calm is that

(02:28):
I know that I don't have to do things outside
of our offense because they can count so much on
the defense. I don't have to I don't have to
worry about that, I don't have to press, I don't
have to feel like I've got to make things happen
because our defense has been so good and that is
making him and I think the offense more at ease.

(02:49):
And it showed. I mean they're up thirty five zip.
I mean they smoked them. And so everything is hitting
now for this team, which is great.

Speaker 7 (02:55):
Well, I love it, and I love that you were
on the call Sunday. First of all, let me just
say thanks on behalf of all basketball fans for acknowledging
the passing of Lenny Wilkins during the game on Sunday. Man,
that meant a lot to a lot of people. So
thanks for doing that. Number one, and then and then
number two. You mentioned Sam Darnold by the way there,
and it's funny because you know, look, he's a guy

(03:18):
that's among the elite right now, numbers wise, of the NFL.
But I feel like there's a lot of people out
there that are waiting for him to fall apart.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Like Steven A was on ESPN the other day Kevin,
and he's.

Speaker 7 (03:29):
Talking about, well, you know, you gotta wait and see
what happens come playoff time.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
And I'm thinking to myself.

Speaker 7 (03:35):
Does he have like a four or five game playoff
sample where we can go back and look at data
that shows No, it's only just a one game in
his whole career.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
I mean, are we.

Speaker 7 (03:45):
Pigeonholding this guy as a playoff failure before he's even
had a chance to get his feet wet come postseason.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
I think what maybe is guiding that comment from some
of the national people is that the week before or
late in the season, they played at Detroit and he
didn't look good then either. And then the next game
was the game in Arizona because they moved because the Fires,
and that was against the Rams and it was not

(04:14):
a good night. I think, quite frankly, that it was
the parts around him, with the vikings that put him
in a different kind of position failed him. More or less,
that could happen to any quarterback. I mean, you're relying
on so many moving parts to fit in sync that

(04:35):
if one goes awry. The other ones are affected. And
the Rams, as you may recall last year when they
did meet in the playoffs, were really hitting their peak.
Their defense was playing extraordinary football. And of all the teams,
the Eagles, who eventually won the Super Bowl played in
the postseason, the Rams gave him a very tough game.

(04:59):
So you know, I would say that they're gonna say
it until he proves him wrong. There's nothing that I saw,
have seen twice now against the Buccaneers and against the
Cardinals that lets me think or leads me to believe
that he will not continually play the way he has

(05:20):
in the regular season. And he's a smart guy. If
there was anything that he was not doing or failed
to do in his mind last year, he'll rectify it.
And I just think I think he's got better parts
around him, quite frankly, even though that Viking team won
fourteen games a year ago.

Speaker 7 (05:38):
Yeah, well, he's now twenty one and five.

Speaker 3 (05:41):
I believe it is in his last twenty six games.

Speaker 7 (05:44):
And by the way, you go back to last week,
and I'm certain that you had this during your massive
amount of prep for.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
The Seahawk game on Sunday.

Speaker 7 (05:51):
By the way, that the Hawks since last year's by
are thirteen and four over the last seventeen games going
back to last year's by. So I'm actually glad that
you saw the game that you did on Monday night
with Philadelphia and Green Bay. I'm trying to try to
figure out who the best team in the NFC is.
I mean, my wife Gina, she's asking me all the time,
who's the best team in the NFC. And I told

(06:13):
her the other day, Kevin, it might be the Seahawks,
and she said, I'm a homer. Am I a homer
if I say the Seahawks are the best team in
the NFC?

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Uh uh no, no, no, no, no, I I could. I
feel as strongly about that Seahawks team as any team
clearly in the NFC, and I might extend that to
the AFC as well. The quarterback is playing great. The
fact that Halani got some carries now they got kind

(06:43):
of a three headed monster there. That was great for
his confidence to get in there and do what he did.
Smith and Jigba is chest. He's at a marvel And
I love Barner, always have liked Barner, and he just
continues to fit. However they're going to use him whether
he's under center running the ball, or whether he's doing

(07:04):
whatever else he's doing. And then defensively to miss the
players that were missing and plug in who they plugged in,
and just see how they're just so coordinated and Mike
is doing a great job with call and the plays,
and it got a couple of guys mentioned it after
the game. They feel so confident in the game plan.

(07:25):
Who's to say the Seahawks are not the best team
in football right now? We've had only two other occasions
where we've gone into a Week ten.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
Where's that note I had? I think it was this.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
We've only had two other seasons in the last forty
years of the NFL where we've had Week ten going
into Week ten, where we've had every team with at
least two losses. So there's a lot of parody and
my money and I just finished watching the Eagles on Monday,

(07:58):
and the day before saw the Hawks, and there's nothing
for me to think right now that they are not
the number one overall seed in the NFL. In the
way they're playing now. I don't know if Arizona, I
don't know what their issue was. Well, when you beat
a team, you know thirty five zip to begin it,
and then score forty four points to seal it, and

(08:20):
don't blink the entire game. That tells me all I
need to say. Arizona is a quality. There's quality there.
There really is. The record may not say it, but
there's quality there. And they're feeling really good about themselves
with the win Monday in Dallas. So the Seahawks were
just overpowering. They were just in a steamroll mode. Yeah,

(08:41):
and they got it, and they played a division opponent,
even more importantly, a division opponent. Real well, well, now
they got this weekend which will be fun to watch.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Yeah, no doubt. We'll talk about that in a second.

Speaker 7 (08:51):
But I tell you what, I'm gonna send that entire
clip to my wife because she won't believe me, but
she'll believe me.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
You tell Gina, You tell Gina. She's not a she
knows the game. She sleeps every night with the Wizard,
and and and and and he it's just not him.
Her perception is spot on. And and like we've all
kind of thought going into this weekend, this will tell

(09:18):
us a little bit more about where they are, how
they are, and how they respond with an important divisional game,
and actually an important NFC.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
Game, no doubt.

Speaker 7 (09:28):
Well if you're if you're saying she sleeps with the wizard,
then you must mean our dog, because I sleep on
the couch.

Speaker 8 (09:33):
Man.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
So I don't know what you're talking.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
Well, okay, you know, I know that Idina has told
me otherwise. But you can go on and do and
say whatever you want to say. But but I've talked
to Gina and I know what's going on.

Speaker 7 (09:46):
I get kicked to the couch for the dog. Kevin
Harlan's with us before we get to the Rams game.
On on Sunday, Brian Dable fired with the Giants. Now
they're starting Jamis Winston on Sunday, just totally bypassing Russ
So Wilson I saw where he had ten four games
where he led by ten points or more and he
blew them all and they finally fired him. So what

(10:08):
do you make of the Giants firing Dable middle of
the year and with Jamis just kind of shooting right
past Russell to play this weekend? Is that an even
bigger sign that Russell's days are coming to an end?

Speaker 1 (10:21):
You think, well, I think yeah, I think russ Is
probably is Probably he can see the light. He can
see the end of the story and light at the
end of the tunnel, and that is sad in a
lot of ways. You know, this is this is no
way to end the career. I think he still feels

(10:41):
he's got good football left. I would like to think
there's a coach out there that still believes in that talent.
Maybe goes to the Raiders. I don't know, but I
just think that, you know, it never ends the way
any of these guys wanted to end, right, It never
ends like Manning won a super Bowl. It never ends

(11:02):
that way. That that is the outlier in the in
the story of when careers close, they never end. The
guy gets cut, the guy get injured, he gets traded around, whatever.
But but I think Russ is healthy. I think he
feels he can still play. But if things were eroding

(11:23):
to the point now where they're going with Jamis or
maybe you know, here, here's another thing too. Maybe it's
just saying, here's a guy in Winston who has been
such a good soldier and has just really been a
compliment and a help to our rookie quarterback and a
compliment to our team. We owe him a chance to
start a game. It may be some of that too,

(11:43):
you know what I'm saying. So so I guess I'm
more willing to think that is the story and not
that Russ is finished. But but I begin every conversation
with an aging superstar saying it never ends the way
they want to end, and it.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
Never does for any of us.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
We all, well, we all would like to go out
on our terms, and rarely does that happen.

Speaker 7 (12:04):
Did you see bad offense or great defense? On Monday
in Green Bay with the Eagles and Packers?

Speaker 1 (12:10):
I saw good defense, and I saw an opportunistic they
were coming off of bye. The Eagles were so they
got the job done. Green Bay's defense played them tough.
Green Bay's in a weird they're in neutral right now.
They can't get out of their own way, and they
can't get out of that neutral gear.

Speaker 4 (12:31):
I think they will.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
They've got too much talent, but they're kind of in
a weird spot right now. For whatever reason, they're not
playing the way we thought they'd play. They're just they're
kind of inexplicable. Quite frankly. The Eagles are as all
good teams do, they find a way, and they found
a way in a big National game on the road,

(12:53):
tough place to play. It was not a pleasant night weatherwise.
It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. It was just kind
of yeah, you know, it's a little chilly, little windy,
and they got the job done. And I think they
hang their hats on that, and they say, we got
a big win against a quality opponent. That was two
first place teams meeting and the Eagles won it. I

(13:14):
think they take the win and they say, that's kind
of what the league is now.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
It's survive in advance, and that's what they did.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
Well, we got a big one on Sunday.

Speaker 8 (13:23):
Man.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
I don't know if you've seen the Rams yet this year.

Speaker 7 (13:25):
Seven and two versus seven and two, Sofi Stadium. You know,
it usually happens down there when the Rams play a
home game. The place gets infected by the opposing fan base.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
That happens a ton in that stadium.

Speaker 7 (13:39):
I don't know if you did the NFC Championship a
couple of years ago with the Niners and Rams there,
but it was all Niner fans. So we're gonna see
a lot of year game. Yeah, we're gonna see a
lot of Seahawk fans. On Sunday. What do you make
of this matchup? Man on Sunday? This is, as you said,
not just a division, but the entire stinking league.

Speaker 4 (13:56):
Yeah no, I.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
Think this has has the two I think this right
now that game has the two best teams in the
NFL going at it. I think the first AFC team
that would come into the conversation would be number three.

Speaker 4 (14:11):
Or two. A.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
Yeah, No, I like these two teams is right now
the two best in Pro football. The record says it,
the performance has said it, the quarterback play has certainly
said it. And I know pel what about the Colts?
What about the colt You know what? Until the Colts,
I'm not quite sold on them yet. And the quarterback

(14:33):
to me, has got to prove himself right through the season,
kind of like I thought for Donald last year. I
thought Donald had to play through the entire season to
say that, Yep, he's proved himself, He's turned the corner.
I got to see a whole season from Daniel Jones.
I'm sorry, that's just kind of how I feel. And
I think that these are the two MVP candidates right now.
With Jonathan Taylor with the Colts, I'd put one two

(14:55):
and three, and I don't know if there's any one
in no particular order. So no, this this these are
the two best teams. It's a shame they've not moved
it and flex yet. But they can't flex yet. I
think we're still a week away, maybe maybe two from
doing that, because this is the game of the week
and and and I really think that that this this

(15:16):
game will and I don't necessarily think that the loser
becomes the team now that has to sit in the
back seat of who's driving the rest of the NFC season.
I just think it's it's you know, it's a it's
a great challenge and and I think both these teams,
win or lose, build upon it. The winner certainly gives
himself a little bravado, little confidence, little little uh kind

(15:39):
of can can kind of get their chest out there
a little bit. But the loser has nothing to feel like, uh,
oh we're in a deep problem. No that that that
is not the case at all. I just think it's
a it's a good test, and I think these are
the two best teams in football going into this week
eleven and a lot can change November and December football

(16:04):
tell you everything, but can also leave a lot of
doors open because some of these matchups get built up.
But to me, this is the best two teams in
football right now.

Speaker 7 (16:17):
Well, Kevin, before you go and we are going to
do where will you be for TV on Sunday in
just a second. But I gotta tell you, man, one
of the more shocking things I've seen all year long
is the Dolphins just kicking the snot out of Buffalo
on Sunday in Miami.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
What the heck is going on with the Bills?

Speaker 7 (16:35):
Because if I would have asked you, you know, two
months ago, hey, here's the best team. Buffalo be on
the list of best teams in the AFC. They can't
get out of their own way. And now there's people
saying is it time to get rid of Sean McDermott.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
Well, and it's saying the same thing about Matt Lafleur
up in Green Bay. Yeah, I mean, I mean, it's
just my gosh, just the impatience of fans and you
know what, I get it, And that's why they and
and they can have their opinion.

Speaker 4 (17:03):
It is such a week to week league.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
I'm telling you, Like who comes out of the Hawks
Rams game the winner or loser either way, but the
narrative is going to be this is the team that
right now is going to Super Bowl, you know, And
and the loser.

Speaker 4 (17:18):
I knew they were a paper tiger. I knew they
didn't have the depth. I knew they couldn't get it done,
and and over reaction.

Speaker 1 (17:26):
It is week to week and and so I'm not
going to get too high or too low on a
team like Buffalo. But that was that was a pretty
stunning result, even though it was on the road. Buffalo
has lost the last couple of years down. They're not
the last couple maybe the last two of the last
three down in Miami. I don't know what it was,

(17:46):
but they they they they exhaled and it showed. And
maybe Miami was riding a little high with the change
in the UH in the football leadership, with Greer being
fired and let go by the Dolphin owner. So let's
we'll keep tabs on Buffalo. They got they got a
lot there. Yeah, but like a lot of these teams,
there are no perfect teams. They've all got two plus losses.

Speaker 9 (18:08):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (18:09):
But this game, I'll go back to it again, Rams
Hawks to me, two best teams in football colliding on Sunday.

Speaker 7 (18:14):
I love that all right, before you go, it's time.
Where will Kevin be for TV on Sunday? I'm gonna
guess that. And I can just feel you grinding your
teeth by the way in the back. I'm gonna guess.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
I'm gonna you know, it's one thing for you to
say it, right, But then when you go through security
at Sea Jack and and and the guy will look
at my name and look at me and look at
my name and then look up at me.

Speaker 4 (18:39):
He goes, why is that.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
Guy you're on with all the time on KGr who
like like and you're so right? Nobody cares. So even
the TSA guy said it to me on Sunday night.

Speaker 4 (18:49):
But that's okay.

Speaker 7 (18:50):
The fact, the fact that this makes you this worked
up is why I keep doing it. By the way,
just so you know, I'm gonna guess that Jim and
Tony are gonna be doing the Chief Bronco game, and
I'm gonna guess that you are doing Buffalo Tampa in Buffalo.

Speaker 3 (19:05):
Am I right?

Speaker 1 (19:07):
You're wrong again. You're wrong every day, You're wrong, every right,
every week we do.

Speaker 6 (19:14):
This's the game.

Speaker 1 (19:16):
The stupid exercise of yours I'm We're in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 4 (19:20):
We're gonna see the Steelers.

Speaker 3 (19:22):
Oh god, all right, yeah, and.

Speaker 1 (19:24):
Then got to go to watch Vegas after that. That's
gonna be with the with the way, the ATC and
every all these flights are. It's anybody's guests if we'll
even get there. But that's that's what we are on Monday.
That's what we are on Monday.

Speaker 7 (19:38):
All right, you got you got Pittsburgh this weekend.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
Who are they playing again?

Speaker 1 (19:42):
Pittsburgh Sunday, Pittsburgh CINCIDNA. But I gotta I got an
NBA game in San Antonio Friday. Oh here you go,
all right, San Antonio, Pittsburgh, Vegas.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
And that's on Amazon Friday night.

Speaker 4 (19:53):
It's on Amazon.

Speaker 7 (19:55):
You know, I hate to ask this because you think
I would know. Is this your first Amazon game Friday?

Speaker 1 (20:00):
No, it's a second, got a second. I've only done one.
I've only done one by design. They've been really good
to me about cutting back my schedule, which I had
to have and I wanted to and so anyway, yeah,
so I'm just doing that Friday and fly up to
Pittsburgh on Saturday, then out to Vegas Sunday night, and
then back home on Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
All right, well, I'm your biggest fan and I'll be
watching Friday night.

Speaker 4 (20:25):
Are you are you really really.

Speaker 3 (20:27):
Sit there with my foam finger just getting.

Speaker 10 (20:29):
You know what?

Speaker 4 (20:29):
I'm your biggest thing.

Speaker 3 (20:30):
Go, Kevin, go is sofy Go. We'll talk in a week.
See you man.

Speaker 4 (20:36):
Thanks pal.

Speaker 7 (20:37):
All right, Kevin Harlan with us. He's got Steelers Bengals.
He's got an NBA game on Amazon on Friday, and
then Cowboys Raiders from Vegas on Monday Night football. We're
gonna break a lot more to get to on a
busy Wednesday. Right here on ninety three to three KJRFM.

Speaker 5 (20:53):
This is Duke of Duke Seafood, and this hour is
brought to you by Duke Seafood. Why don't you make
it a Duke's night tonight. Reserve your table today at
dukeseafood dot com. Now back to Safti and Dick on
Sports Radio ninety three point three KJR FM.

Speaker 7 (21:08):
All right, well, by this time tomorrow, we'll know, we
will know by this time tomorrow who has won the
American League MVP cal Rawley or Aaron Judges.

Speaker 6 (21:22):
So anti climatic. On November the thirteenth.

Speaker 3 (21:25):
Well, yeah, just so again game four of the World Series. Man,
it's easy.

Speaker 7 (21:29):
Just do it on the field before Game four, and
if the guy happens to be there, then you bring
him out and you give him the damn trophy.

Speaker 9 (21:34):
Right.

Speaker 7 (21:34):
It's again like how many times, how many times we
said NBA when they give out the MVP and it's
during the finals or whatever, and the guy's there, he
gets the trophy on the court, you know, Adam Silver,
David Stern posing for the picture.

Speaker 3 (21:45):
I think they're blowing it with that opportunity.

Speaker 11 (21:47):
So how about doing it at the end of the
regular season on the last day before the playoffs and
you can market the MVP during the playoffs.

Speaker 7 (21:53):
Well, you gotta wait until the regular Season's all. That's
what I'm saying to vote on it. So you're saying,
what are you saying.

Speaker 11 (21:58):
Between the last game of the regular scene, between the
last game of the regular season the first game of
the playoffs that day, we can't get it. We can't
get votes in in twenty twenty five, between the last
day of the regular season the first day of the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (22:11):
I mean, yeah, you would think.

Speaker 7 (22:12):
I think you want to give people time to process everything.
You know, like one hundred and sixty two games they have,
but they still may want to do some research. I
don't like giving people a day when the season. So
the best thing is the World Series. World Series just
makes too much sense. Yeah, because you're talking about a
month then, right, you know whatever, a month and a week.

Speaker 10 (22:29):
I would say that I have always believed that the
playoffs should incorporate part of the MVP vote. I'm not
sure though, there's a good way of doing that, you know, considering.

Speaker 7 (22:40):
Well, the way to do it is make them wait
to vote, like we should wait until the Bowl games
are over for the Heisman. I mean, if you've got
twelve teams making the playoffs, now there's going to be
more and more Heisman contenders in the tournament.

Speaker 10 (22:52):
Yes, So here's so the PLAYO I was making is
this is that if you want the World Series, like
I would have a perfect situation, the World Series should
count towards MVP voting. But the problem is is that
then you're talking about after the world So the only
way to do it is keep voting and going through
the end of the Championship series and then at least
people can see, Okay, this guy played in the.

Speaker 11 (23:12):
World I just think it's easier for football to have
a Heisman Trophy in the playoffs, have an MVP at
the end of the playoffs because your MVP is is
going to be a quarterback and they're going to make
the playoffs, whereas baseball there's one out of twenty six players.

Speaker 6 (23:29):
Man, I mean, it's just.

Speaker 7 (23:30):
Well, Paul Skin's just won the sy Young and the
Pirates stunt exactly, Andrey Dawson won the MVP in the
last place Cubs team. We've seen it before. Griffy, you know,
did the Marriors make the playoffs? The year he won
the MVP was ninety six?

Speaker 8 (23:40):
Right here?

Speaker 3 (23:41):
They did. They did make it.

Speaker 7 (23:43):
But the point is I that I agree with that
there's going to be way more Heisman contenders that make
the playoff then there will be.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
Well I mean, look, here's the thing.

Speaker 7 (23:53):
Maybe not because the more you expand the postseason, the
more teams.

Speaker 3 (23:56):
Are in it.

Speaker 7 (23:57):
I mean, I I don't mind waiting until the playoffs
are over to vote on it. I also don't mind
making it a regular season award and then announcing it
during the World Series. But again, tomorrow we're gonna find out.
And I'm just telling you right now. I'm not going
to throw a fit of Aaron Judge wins the MVP.
I'm just not right. I mean, I know we all
want Cal to win. I hope he wins. I really
think he's got a good shot of winning the MVP.

(24:20):
Aaron Judge, guys had a OPS that was almost two
hundred points higher than cal Raley. He had thirty two
more hits in seven less games than what cal Rawley played,
and his batting average was eighty five points higher than
cal Raley.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
So look, the home.

Speaker 7 (24:36):
Runs is huge, the defense is huge, the RBIs is gigantic,
all that stuff, and maybe if they would have waited
Jackson to the playoffs shore over, maybe Cal would have
crept pasted him. He would have with his performance and
won the MVP over Aaron Judge. But I'm not going
to lose my mind if Aaron Judge wins tomorrow. No,
absolutely not.

Speaker 10 (24:53):
That is though, the crux of the whole thing We've
seen this in so many different years, in so many
different leagues and whatever is why doesn't playoffs?

Speaker 3 (25:02):
Why can't playoffs be part of this?

Speaker 10 (25:04):
To Dick's point, like is twenty twenty five, you should
be able to keep voting going through the end of
the Championship Series, and frankly, right now, you should be
able to keep it going through the end of the
World Series because you do this so late, and be
able to have it incorporated, because it's very clear cal
Rawly kept the Mariners going to Game seven, all those
big moments, the home run in Game seven, he would

(25:24):
have done this thing by far.

Speaker 7 (25:25):
Well, then give out a postseason Player of the Month
or whatever. I mean, give out another trophy. I know
they give out the MVP of the World Series and
all that blah blah blah, But if you want to
give out a second one, I just think for me
and the Heisman, everyone's going to a bowl game, so
at least wait until the bowl games are over. And
the ball games are obviously a part of the twelve
team playoff. But look, we all hope cal Rawley wins

(25:46):
it tomorrow. Let's hope he does. It'd be a fantastic
moment in Mariner history to see him win the MVP.
But I don't think anybody can throw a fit affair
and Judge wins the MVP.

Speaker 11 (25:57):
Yeah, I only look at the fan from both fan
bases that say, oh my guy clearly is the No,
he's not Marin fans, no Yankee fans.

Speaker 6 (26:09):
Your guy clearly isn't the guy.

Speaker 3 (26:11):
Nobody can losing, right nobody?

Speaker 11 (26:14):
And you you you spit out the numbers, and but
right now, don't expect cal to win Aaron Judges minus
three twenty five?

Speaker 3 (26:23):
What's that right now?

Speaker 6 (26:24):
To win the MBA?

Speaker 3 (26:25):
What's that based on? You think?

Speaker 7 (26:27):
Is that based on them actually talking to voters who
are not allowed to talk. I don't know where that
comes from. I mean, waging what were the odds? Yeah,
probably exactly. So people that don't have any idea what
the hell they're doing, like you and I making bets
at the Embra Queen Casino. What were the odds at
the end of September on the MVP. They're closer, so
why would they change now when the playoffs don't matter.

Speaker 6 (26:50):
That's that's true. That's true.

Speaker 3 (26:52):
I mean that's weird to me. I mean, I got it.

Speaker 11 (26:54):
I you know, I tried to buy cal of MVP
by betting on Aaron Judge.

Speaker 6 (26:58):
When it got down they were basic even, and I
was like, are you kidding?

Speaker 11 (27:01):
What is the first time that Aaron Judge and Calvin
even I'm depending on Aaron judge.

Speaker 6 (27:05):
What's cal now plus two twenty?

Speaker 4 (27:07):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (27:07):
If I can make a bet on cal to do it,
I do it. Why not?

Speaker 7 (27:10):
You're getting two twenty, You're getting better value, absolutely absolute
the hell make it happens. So we got that going
on tomorrow. We're gonna know tomorrow at this time. David Sampson,
who's great former president of Marlins, will join us in
the five pm hour tomorrow and we'll get David's reaction
to all that. I was looking up some numbers. By
the way, Brian Schmetcher is going to join us next segment.

(27:30):
He wanted the day a couple days to get over
the loss on Saturday, so he'll join us next segment
on the AAR and we'll talk to Millan more about
this on Friday. I can't wait for Hughes segment on
Friday at five o'clock because there's a ton to go over.
We were talking about blitz rates and all that stuff,
and I think we're talking about if I have my
numbers correctly, both teams are kind of low in the
blitz rate category.

Speaker 3 (27:51):
I know the Hawks don't blitz a lot on defense.

Speaker 7 (27:54):
It's probably a good idea in this game on Sunday
to not do that because matt Stafford has a passer
ray of one hundred and twenty seven against the blitz
this year, seventeen touchdowns, one pick, and a sixty eight
percent completion rate. He is right up there with the
best of the best in the NFL when it comes
to handling the blitz. He's also very good when they
don't blitz, by the way, That's why people are saying

(28:14):
he's the MVP. The difference is Darnald. The difference is Darnald.
Darnald does not handle a blitz nearly as well as
Stafford does. Passer rating of ninety three when he's blitzed,
passer rating of one hundred and twenty eight when he's
not blitzed, with thirteen touchdowns and two picks. So I'm
curious to see how much the Rams come after this

(28:34):
guy on Sunday.

Speaker 11 (28:35):
Man and I think the Seahawks need to be pretty
vanilla against Matthew Stafford because you're not going to show
anything that he hasn't seen before. You can confuse young quarterbacks,
You're not going to confuse Matthew Stafford.

Speaker 6 (28:46):
You gotta beat him with your Base four Man Rush.

Speaker 3 (28:48):
He's seen everything, man, and we're going to break.

Speaker 7 (28:50):
Brian Schmitzer, unfortunately, has now seen almost everything you can
see as a coach in soccer. He'll join us next
on ninety three three KJARFM.

Speaker 5 (28:59):
This is Duke of Duke's and this hour is brought
to you by Duke's Seafood. Why don't you make it
a Duke's Night tonight. Reserve your table today at Dukeseafood
dot com. Now back to Softy and Dick on Sports
Radio ninety three point three KJRFM.

Speaker 7 (29:14):
I do know that Brian Schmetzer got a big old
Duke's gift card in the mail a few weeks ago.
You might want to take that head to his local
Duke Seafood restaurant and Billy after the bar and spend
the whole damn thing.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
It sounds like a plan. Can we join him?

Speaker 7 (29:28):
Absolutely we can after what we saw on Saturday, Man,
But Brian Schmetzer joining us on the radio show.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
God, I mean, I could ask you how you're doing,
but I think.

Speaker 7 (29:37):
I know how you're doing. The question is are you
as frustrated? Are you as pissed off, angry, sad?

Speaker 3 (29:44):
Whatever?

Speaker 7 (29:45):
The emotion was on Saturday night. Brian, are you still
there one hundred percent? Or have you maybe changed and
maybe come down a little bit since then?

Speaker 4 (29:54):
Well?

Speaker 8 (29:55):
I was all of those things for the last forty
eight hours, or the first forty eight hours, maybe the first,
you know, three days. I was so desperate that I
almost call Jackson's wife, who's a therapist, that talked to
her on the I mean, I've got an ivy of
tequila that you know.

Speaker 9 (30:15):
I just a constant drip.

Speaker 8 (30:18):
I don't have anything to do anymore.

Speaker 9 (30:20):
So I actually listen to your show.

Speaker 8 (30:22):
I mean Kevin Harlan and Gina and the whole you
know who sleeps with the Wizard, And I mean I'm
just I'm a lot of sorts.

Speaker 3 (30:31):
I love it.

Speaker 10 (30:31):
Brian, north Shore Therapy will be giving you a call.
Don't worry about it.

Speaker 6 (30:35):
There you go a good deal on me, good deal, Brian.

Speaker 11 (30:39):
Is there is there a moment that you keep replaying
your head kind of an an if this didn't happen.

Speaker 6 (30:45):
Moment that you just keep replaying.

Speaker 8 (30:48):
Yeah, there's about three of them, four of them, eight
of them. I could I mean, look even look when
I got the red card.

Speaker 9 (30:57):
I mean Albert clinks.

Speaker 8 (30:59):
That one off the poet he was at the penalty spot.
Maybe that was a precursor to Obed's miss. But we
had some chances in the first half to make it
three to one, even before the red card, Jordan had
a good chance. Uh.

Speaker 1 (31:12):
You know.

Speaker 8 (31:13):
Then we had some you know, really good moments in
the second half, the score, the third goal, and we didn't.
We failed. And you know, give Minnesota some credit, they
stuck with it. You know, they went ahead, and you know,
the guys come back and then you know, just the.

Speaker 9 (31:28):
Just the penalty kicks.

Speaker 8 (31:30):
I mean, it's just like going through my head, well,
should I have changed the order? You know, what could
I have done? But we had two chances to win it. Yeah,
so you know, and and the big move that we discussed,
you know, putting Andrew Thomas in, I think was the
right move.

Speaker 9 (31:45):
I think I I think I did a lot of
things right. I think the team did a lot of
things right.

Speaker 8 (31:49):
But at the end of the day, it was one
of those moments in sports where it's just not.

Speaker 9 (31:53):
Going to be your night.

Speaker 7 (31:54):
Yeah, is the tequila IV rip in as we speak?
Or did you take it out for the segment?

Speaker 9 (31:59):
I took it out for the show.

Speaker 3 (32:01):
Okay, because.

Speaker 7 (32:03):
Because you need it for this show. No problem with
that at all. The only guy that can't Drake is Jackson.
The rest of us are good to go. But yeah, yeah,
you put in Andrew Thomas for the penalty kicks, right.
Tell us what was behind that decision and how did
Stephan Fry take that call?

Speaker 8 (32:19):
You think, Well, it's a great question because that was
you know, I was dreading that conversation because Steph is
arguably the best goalkeeper that this. I mean, you're going
to talk about Kathy Keller, Marcus Tanneman, but Steph has
won a lot of games and a lot of trophies.
And when I first you know, talked about it, thought

(32:39):
about it with the coaching staff, I said, you know what,
I'm just going to ask him because you know, I
think this is important and we're going to try and
do whatever it takes to you know, help the team win.

Speaker 9 (32:49):
So had the conversation with him. Look, there was a.

Speaker 8 (32:52):
Little bit of you know, kind of a you know,
squirmy moment there in his chair, but you know what,
he is such a team guy.

Speaker 9 (33:00):
Yeah, and he said, you know what, Yeah.

Speaker 8 (33:02):
Andrew is you know better better at penalties and so
let's do this.

Speaker 9 (33:07):
And so it was.

Speaker 8 (33:08):
Pre planned and there was no drama, no animosity. It
was just like Andrew knew, Steph knew, the players new,
and we went around to do our business.

Speaker 7 (33:18):
So you basically let Stephan Fry kind of make that call.
And I wonder, is there any other player on your
roster or any other player that you've ever coached that
you would trust to be honest with you and actually
let that player make that decision.

Speaker 8 (33:34):
Well, I'll give you a great example in the penalty
kicks shootout because they went down a guy for the
red card, we had to take someone off our ten
field player roster to make it even. And it's a
weird rule by MLF. And so Christian had missed the
penalty when he was in Minnesota earlier, and Christian just

(33:58):
really wasn't confident. So he is the actual player that
you know I took off the roster for that pedally.

Speaker 9 (34:05):
Kicks shootout the last game.

Speaker 8 (34:07):
And so I have a lot of players that would
do things that you know, help help the team win,
sacrifice a little part of themselves to make sure that
the team wins games.

Speaker 11 (34:19):
Well, Coach, where do we go from here at keeper
Andrews signed long term. There's some questions about Fry. What's
your what's your take on that spot going into the offseason.

Speaker 9 (34:27):
We're working on that.

Speaker 8 (34:28):
Look, there's going to be competition, and I had a
conversation with Steph today. You know, I'm going to have
a conversation year ending meetings with Andrew and the rest
of the guys throughout the course of this week, and
Steph knows that it's real competition this year. Andrew certainly
has done enough.

Speaker 9 (34:46):
He is ready, Dick, he's ready to be the starter.

Speaker 8 (34:49):
So we'll we'll have some more talks and we'll we'll
think about it. We'll go into preseason and look, the
goalkeeper is going to start the first game.

Speaker 4 (34:59):
Of the year.

Speaker 7 (34:59):
Well there's a lot more obviously about that match on Saturday,
to talk about the off season, to talk about Brian
Schmetro's with us, and I'm just kind of wondering, because
I want this thing to work for you, man. I
want there to be a reason why you come on
the air with us. Are you feeling better in the
last five.

Speaker 4 (35:13):
Minutes is.

Speaker 9 (35:16):
Like therapy?

Speaker 3 (35:17):
Talking to you good? All right?

Speaker 7 (35:19):
Just you know again, because we love it. I just
want to make sure it works for you. But you know,
not as good as talking to Riza. But no, it's okay. No,
I can't even get an appointment with her. I mean,
she's scared beyond her to even talk to me. But
the other major off season topic is going to be
at Bit obviously, right, he's made it pretty clear he's
got big career goals, and who doesn't. Who can blame

(35:40):
the guy? How do you balance wanting that kind of
player on your team versus letting him follow his heart
and his dreams overseas.

Speaker 8 (35:48):
Look, Softius, if the right deal comes around, the right club,
we're going to let him go. I mean we have
to the kids. You know, you don't want to have
a and I'm not saying it. Oh, Bit's heart wasn't
in this season. It's just he's got some ambitions and like,
we're not going to give him away for free.

Speaker 9 (36:06):
I mean, let's be honest about that.

Speaker 8 (36:07):
I mean, he can play out his contract and that's
that's fine, that's something his camp can talk about. But
you know, if someone comes to Craig in this offseason
and there's been some you know, some little feelers thrown
out there, and you know, if the deal comes around.

Speaker 9 (36:24):
We would move him.

Speaker 6 (36:26):
What's that deal look like, what's the number?

Speaker 8 (36:29):
Well, I mean, you know we've lost you know, some
some leverage. I mean there was a ten million dollars
deal with Tigrisk, But now as he comes to the
end of his contract, I mean there's there's all sorts
of nuances there that Craig has to deal with.

Speaker 9 (36:43):
Craig doesn't have an easy job with this one. But
he's a talented player.

Speaker 8 (36:47):
I mean, there's been plenty of players in our league
that have gone for you know, three, four, eight, ten
million dollars to other teams.

Speaker 7 (36:55):
Yeah, how about roth Rock? Questions about him and his future?
Can he just assume that you want the guy back.

Speaker 8 (37:02):
I want the guy back. I think there's a lot
of fans out there that want him back. But he's
going to test the free agent market.

Speaker 4 (37:08):
You know.

Speaker 8 (37:08):
I had that conversation with him today, and you know,
the club is still in contact with his camp, so
it's not like we've just radio silence. But he wants
to see if there's any takers out there. He's just
playing the game.

Speaker 9 (37:23):
You know, he wants his agents.

Speaker 8 (37:25):
Want a little more leverage, So we'll see how that
ends up. But I know that I'd like him back,
and there's like I said, there's plenty of fans that
would have him back in a heartbeat.

Speaker 11 (37:34):
Well, Peggy, backing off what Softy just asked, you comfortable
bringing back the entire attacking unit as is or do
you feel like you need to add to the offense.

Speaker 8 (37:43):
Well, we're looking to add pieces, Dick, Like, the injury
to Pedro was a blow.

Speaker 9 (37:50):
You know, that was a big blow. That's going to
take a little.

Speaker 8 (37:53):
Bit of time. You know, Ryan Kent is kind of undecided.
You know, his was a one year deal and there's
an option, but we got.

Speaker 9 (38:01):
To sort through that.

Speaker 8 (38:03):
You know, there's some holes that we want to fill.
Look at Paul Lee's if he you know, tests free
agency and he leaves. So another attacking piece is you know,
in the forefront, along with making sure we have a
backup plan in case o Bid leaves as well.

Speaker 2 (38:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (38:19):
Well, Brian Schwetzer again with us and just coming off
of heartbreaking ten penalty kicks on Saturday night, man and unbelievable.
It's kind of talking off the air that you do
this long enough, you'll see everything. And I'm assuming you
saw that for the first time in your life as
a coach on Saturday night. But looking back on this year,
I mean, I guess most people would call it a success.

(38:41):
Between beating Messi and Miami winning League's Cup, Jordan Morris
becomes the all time top scorer and team history Club
World Cup, Pedro's goal greatest goal in club history, finally
beating Portland. Here do you have a moment, Do you
have a game, a match, a memory, whatever that you
think will define this season for you men?

Speaker 8 (39:01):
Yeah, I think it has to be the League's Cup victory. Look,
that was a tremendous part of our year. You know,
the team was just in a great run of form.
Everything was coming together. You know, Pedro's goal, you know,
might be up for goal of the Year, like in
the FIFA World's you know, in the World rankings of

(39:22):
goal of the Year. That was really a good time
to be a Sounder fan, and it culminated with sixty
nine seventy thousand people watching us beat Messy, So that had.

Speaker 9 (39:33):
To be the highlight.

Speaker 8 (39:34):
But you know what, Softy, I'm a pragmatic guy and
you look, at the end of the year, we got
to take this one on the chin. We got to
say to the fans that, look, we didn't live up
to our standard that last game against Minnesota, and we're
going to carry that through in the next season, or
at least I am, because I'm still I'm still kind
of passed.

Speaker 7 (39:53):
I was going to say, will it piss you off
the entire offseason? Will this motivate you?

Speaker 9 (39:57):
Yeah, it's for sure.

Speaker 8 (39:58):
It's going to motivate me and I and the messages
that players are leaving for the offseason is been the same.
I mean, you know, we got a high standard and yes,
the you know, the league's couples of success, and we
had some good moments there, but you know, this team
we want to go deep into the playoffs. This was
this was too early of an exit. And the way

(40:18):
we exited the playoffs is what should piss them off.

Speaker 3 (40:22):
I love it.

Speaker 7 (40:23):
Well, listen, man, I know Saturday was tough, but just
think about it this way. Saturday was tough, but at
least you're not working for Merrett Paulson in Portland.

Speaker 8 (40:32):
All right, nice, that is a good one.

Speaker 9 (40:37):
I love that.

Speaker 7 (40:38):
It can always be worse, man, trust me, Brian, you're
the man. Great stuff. Hell of a run. Sorry it
went down the way it did Saturday. Use it as
some gas for next year. Go enjoy yourself over the offseason,
and we'll talk sooner, right.

Speaker 9 (40:51):
Mans, Coach, all right, guys, take care.

Speaker 3 (40:53):
All right, Brian Schmetzer with us. We're going to break
