In Mark 6:7–32, Jesus sends out the twelve disciples two by two, giving them authority over unclean spirits and instructing them to travel light, relying on hospitality. They preach repentance, cast out demons, and heal the sick with anointing oil. Meanwhile, news about Jesus spreads, and Herod hears of His growing influence, fearing He may be John the Baptist raised from the dead. The passage recounts how John was imprisoned and executed by Herod after John condemned his unlawful marriage to Herodias. Herod reluctantly beheads John to keep a foolish promise made at Herodias's request. After John's death, the disciples return from their mission, and Jesus invites them to rest in a quiet place, recognizing their need for recovery.
