The following.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
He is a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and

Speaker 1 (00:17):
This he is hanging with the boys. Now, your hosts.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
Nate Newton, Kurt Daniels, Jesse Holly and Shannon Gross.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Shannon him.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Its stirs day. It's a live look at the Ford Center.
We call it again outside of Toto Championship Plaza. Today's
high fifty six degrees, low, fifty two degrees Snowmagetton is
on the way. Our captain who Norman sits in his seat.
Shannon Grove says he has the Mexican flu. Don't know
(00:54):
quite what that is, don't need the details, but we'll
get the details about that later. But this is Nate Newton.
We got I'm doing.
Speaker 5 (01:06):
A blank today.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
I'm going to get you fine, no food. I know,
I'm almost I'm getting to the finish line. In the
back keepers live a local. It's Chris Bean sitting in
my seat. We have a young up and coming star wow,
and he's going to get us all set for the
breaking news that we have. We got the young Tommy Yards.
(01:30):
I am salt and Pepper Poppy. Together, we make hanging
with the boys the sports talking equivalent to brow people
when we speak, wingstop is and the news is here.
The weight is finally over the Cowboys. After they've casted
their wide net interview after interview after interview, they have
(01:53):
come to a conclusion. There are terms that are being
put in place right now for the Dallas Cowboys to
hire their next defensive coordinator. Former Philadelphia Eagles passing game
coordinator Christian Parker will be the Cowboys, barring any crazy
thing that happens, will be the Cowboys' next defensive coordinator.
(02:15):
And for that we're gonna go to Tommy Yarrish first,
so Tommy can give the fans, give us, if everyone listening,
just a kind of a background on who is Christian Parker?
What is his philosophy, his systems, you know with the
Cowboys liked him and just all of who is he
a disciple of all of the things that encumbass. Who
(02:36):
Christian Parker is the Dallas Cowboys new defensive coordinator, Cause,
like we stop, he's here.
Speaker 6 (02:43):
Well, thank you, guys, I'm happy to be here here.
I can't do it.
Speaker 7 (02:46):
Yeah, but no, Christian Parker thirty four years old.
Speaker 6 (02:49):
He's only been in the NFL for seven years.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
He's one year older than Dak.
Speaker 6 (02:53):
He started back, that's true.
Speaker 7 (02:55):
He started back in twenty nineteen as a defensive quality
control coach for the Packers. That evolved into him becoming
the defensive backs coach with the Broncos in twenty twenty one.
That was the year they drafted Patrick Cirtan in the
first round. By year two, Patrick Shartan was an All
Pro working with Christian Parker as his defensive backs coach.
And then obviously we've seen what's happened with Patrick Shartan
(03:15):
since he's been one of, if not the best corners.
Speaker 6 (03:17):
In the NFL.
Speaker 7 (03:18):
And then he joined the Philadelphia Eagles in twenty twenty four,
the year they went to the Super Bowl. He's the
passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach.
Speaker 6 (03:25):
That's the role he's held for the last two years.
And same thing.
Speaker 7 (03:28):
That's the year that they draft Quinnyon Mitchell and Cooper
Dejean on Day one and Day two, both of them
all pros this past year in twenty twenty five, so
of all the candidates that the Cowboys interviewed, there were
nine total and then they were rejected. For one of them,
he has I think the strongest developmental track record in
terms of within two years these young corners. Yes, they
(03:50):
were drafted high, and that's certainly something you have to
think about with this, but they're all pro players. And
you think about the Cowboys in their current situation. Right now,
You've got savone revel that they really like, but he
needs to get healthy. Can he get developed and get
his confidence back and be what a lot of people
thought he was at East Carolina, which was a first
round pick, maybe the best corner in his class. You've
got Deron Bland, who again is also battling injuries. But
(04:13):
if he gets healthy, we've seen what he can do
when he's playing on the outside and he breaks the
record for most pick sixes in a season.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
And you also think about the Cowboys.
Speaker 7 (04:20):
Have two first round picks, So do you think that
they're enticed now to go and get a corner or
go and get a safety with one of those picks.
Given how good this guy is with taking those early
round talents and developing them into all pro caliber players,
I think they're gonna have a lot of options. But
I think that Christian Parker has got a solid resume
for himself. He had a very good interview with them
(04:43):
on Wednesday, and obviously they're moving quickly to try and
get him in the building.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Now, all right, Nate, we were in the back talking
about when you walked in the back, I said, they
found their guy, and you looked at me and you said,
you know, hey, I got very few qualifications for this guy.
And you said what you wanted to see from Christian
Parker That would kind of put you in the mind
frame and in the mood of Okay, I can get
(05:07):
with this dude. I can rally behind him and follow him.
What will those things that you told me?
Speaker 4 (05:11):
And it's simple And a lot of people think this
is easy, but here at the Cowboys that don't work
that way. Will we have a full contingency of players
potential players on defense from OTA's through training camp, full
ninety nine point nine percent participation. Will these guys play
(05:34):
during the preseason? Because if we don't have that from
this guy and he's acting that because I know they
do it a lot up in Philadelphia, but this ain't Philadelphia.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
So where he bringing this down?
Speaker 8 (05:47):
Here?
Speaker 4 (05:48):
This developmental from the Broncos through the Philadelphia to hear it.
Will he be allowed to do these type things? That's
just it sounds so simp You.
Speaker 5 (06:01):
Know, hey, yeah man, new system knew this, knew that.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
New players, we're gonna get to know each other. But
will they get to.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
Know this guy? And I'm axing tummy?
Speaker 4 (06:12):
Is I mean you know about this guy we brought
you and you just specially hazy you you got went
behind closed doors and find is this guy that type
of guy?
Speaker 5 (06:19):
Is he? Does he? What is his demeanor? Is?
Speaker 4 (06:22):
Is he an easy going guy? I know he can
connect with young players. We see that with the last
few group of dbs.
Speaker 7 (06:29):
Det with Yeah, I think I think he has high
marks for that, for getting along with his players and
for explaining his concepts and ways that are easier for
them to understand. It seems like he has a clear
way of what he wants to do. I saw an
article that said he's kind of Philadelphia's secret weapon and
just kind of a nerd in terms of football and
making sure that his.
Speaker 6 (06:47):
Scheme is communicated.
Speaker 7 (06:49):
Now he's not. He's never been a defensive coordinator. Yes,
so in terms of okay, what does he look like?
Speaker 6 (06:53):
It's a defensive play caller. We don't know. We won't
know until this upcoming year.
Speaker 7 (06:57):
But when it comes to his football all I Q
he's got high marks for how smart he is in
terms of the defense and the positions that he specializes in,
especially in the secondary. And over the last two years
he gets to learn from one of the best in
the business in Vic Fangio, the Eagles defensive coordinators.
Speaker 9 (07:13):
So I wonder how much that played a part maybe
in this decision. Was He's in that Fangio tree.
Speaker 6 (07:18):
Yeah, And Fangio's tree has has been extensive.
Speaker 7 (07:20):
There have been plenty of guys that have come from
that that have found success. And Parker is a guy
who has high marks around the league. He's gotten good
reviews from everywhere that he's been and Denver, yes, who
he was und in Denver that.
Speaker 6 (07:34):
Would have that would.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Fangio and then Joseph came out.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
And what I'm trying to say is these two dog coordinators,
these two guys demand that you get out and do
what you have to do. I've heard these young defensive
titles talk about Vangio big.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
Yes, I've heard we practice how we get it done?
Will we allowed as man?
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Mister Parker thirty four year old prodigy genius up out
of nowhere. I evidently know have played Matt in all
his life.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
This is real doll time now and I'm actually you
once again, miss Tommy. What is gonna happen here?
Speaker 7 (08:19):
Well, I don't think he's been playing Matt and he
helped he helped the Eagles get to a Super Bowl,
and he helped turn these young corners. And again, yes,
they are first round picks, right, They're supposed to be
your best players. They're supposed to be these Pro Bowl,
all pro.
Speaker 6 (08:32):
Kind of players.
Speaker 7 (08:32):
But how many times have we seen corners being taken
in the first round or for whatever reason, it just
doesn't work out. Yeah, So there still is a coaching
element to this, and you still have to do the
job of making them good players.
Speaker 6 (08:43):
Helps him Parker good, right, Christian Parker.
Speaker 7 (08:46):
Has made these guys good players, and he has made
these secondaries better. I mean, when you think about if
you were to just think about the league, you don't
know who Christian Parker is. When you think about who
are some of the teams that have the better secondaries
in the NFL, Denver and Philadelphia are going to come
to mind.
Speaker 6 (09:00):
In the terms of recent history. And I think he's
a part of that. Is it just him? No, but
it's it's part of the equation certainly.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
Yeah. No, I think I think that's that's a good
that's a good starting point, you know. But one of the.
Speaker 5 (09:14):
That is good. No, you got you got man, You
did that. You did that?
Speaker 1 (09:20):
Fix man?
Speaker 5 (09:21):
What did you fix out?
Speaker 1 (09:22):
I mean, you just messed up my whole man, you
messed up my whole entire train of thought when we
were looking at all of these candidates. You know, the
main thing because I know what Shoty said at the podium, right,
he kept talking about wanting a teacher and that kind
of Once he said that now all the content creators,
(09:44):
we're talking about teacher, teacher, teacher, teacher, teacher. And Nate
made a great point a couple of weeks ago, and
he said, whooped the damn do no, duh. If you
coach at any point in time and anybody's in the league,
you gotta be able to teach, right, Like, that's what
you want?
Speaker 5 (09:58):
Now?
Speaker 1 (09:58):
Does everybody do it the same?
Speaker 5 (09:59):
No?
Speaker 1 (10:00):
And for me, the biggest thing was development, because I
know that he was a passing game coordinator and a
defensive back. Coordinator, I mean defensive back coach. But now
I need to develop everything. You're now in charge of everything.
It ain't just the secondary anymore. You got linebackers you're
now you preside over. You have defensive line that you
(10:23):
have to preside over. At rush ends you gotta preside over.
So my thing has always been because a part of
where the Cowboys have lacked, in my opinion, has been
the development part. Is you know, yes, you know, Patrick
Shartan was gonna be fine to my opinion, whoever coached him, right,
he come from pedigree, He was a high first round,
(10:46):
top ten pick. The percentages of Patrick Shartan not being
good or slim right now, Yes, you want somebody to
kind of usher him into that thing. But you know
we wanted Patrick Shirtan so so screw you coach Parker
and taking patcher Tane away from us early on. We
want to drive him in. We wanted him to fall
(11:07):
to twelve. We wanted JC Horne to fall to twelve.
But then the same thing with Mitchell and and what's
the other called the gene Right, these are guys we
expected to do so, sure, but will you be able
to give me depth? Will you be able to give
me something from the front end to the back end
(11:28):
that we have a strong foundation on right, because that's
been our problem. It's we've always been top heavy. We'll
always have some guys that you know, name brand, and
then after that, if they happen to go down or
team finds a way to scheme up them to take
them out of the game, we're cooked. Nobody else can
show up, nobody else finds a way to do anything
(11:50):
on a productive level. And it's been that way for
ten plus years. And so I've always been interested in
what are these guys going to be in the developmental department?
Speaker 5 (11:59):
Amen?
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Are they going to be? And and the question is
still unanswered, and we'll have time, but like I'm interested
to see that. That's what I will be keeping my
eye on this this offseason, is what players are we
bringing in? Because when he when he when he had
a good defense in and and uh and uh with
(12:22):
the with the Broncos and with Philadelphia. Yeah, it's really good.
It's really easy for for for Cooper dejene and Kunya
Mitchell to be all pros when he got those monsters
up front collapse in that pocket and making the quarterbacks
life a living hell, no doubt, right like that. That
makes life a ton easier to cover when quarterbacks don't
(12:44):
have all day to sit back there and do things.
And that's the part that we have to see, you know,
beginning to de develop. But it's gonna be. This is
a player driven league. There's a player driven league. Man
like you ain't never found a great coach that wasn't
linked to a great player. Sorry, you know what I mean,
Bill Parcells? Okay, cool? You you had that maniac number
fifty six running around there for you, you know what
(13:05):
I mean, like you just you you name the coach,
I can almost guarantee you that there was a gold
level jacket wearing dude or dudes around them. Yeah, you
know what I'm saying. And so that's the part that
I want to see now. I want to see Will
Jerry and company in the front office. Well, they were
that that tight pocketbook that they got, that tight purse
(13:28):
and wallet. That's that's that's hey, bro, come on now.
Speaker 7 (13:33):
Well you make a great point, because you talk about
the player side, I wonder about, Okay, what does the
rest of this defensive coaching staff look like? How much
of it is going to be holdovers from this past
staff and how much of it is going to be
an influx of what Christian Parker is looking for or
maybe whoever else it may be. But absolutely, I've always
(13:53):
been of the opinion that your secondary gets so much
better when you have a pass rush. You can get
away with maybe not being all that great, whether it
be talent wise or schematically in the secondary if you
get home on the quarterback.
Speaker 6 (14:07):
Yeah, Dallas did not get home on the quarterback.
Speaker 7 (14:10):
At all last year, and so it didn't matter if
they had Drell Reeves and Dion Say, Okay, maybe that
makes a difference, but you can have those high level guys,
but if you're not getting home on the quarterback, it
doesn't matter. So yes, Christian's that's my biggest question for
Christian Parkers. What does the rest of what does the
front seven look like like? Are your linebackers going to
take a step forward? Is that another area you target
(14:31):
in the draft? Can you get after the quarterback so
that his job becomes easier because he's shown in his
career that he can develop corners and he can develop
a good secondary. Can they get home on the quarterback
to make his job easier.
Speaker 9 (14:43):
And he he do as a coach though to me,
that sounds like a player driven You need guys who
can get home in the quarterback. Sure, as a coach,
how can he change that? Well?
Speaker 7 (14:54):
I think that that's going to be the interesting part
about what we learn about this guy. Right, all he's
done his entire career is defense backs. So what does
that look like in the front seven. Is he going
to find somebody on his staff that says, you know, hey,
I trust you and to give you autonomy with this
and or I'll check in on you once in a while.
But for the most part, it's on you to develop
(15:14):
these guys and get after the quarterback. Now, I would
expect he has some hand in it and not for
it to be just all right, you got it, get you,
get you handle the pass rush, you under the defensive line.
But that's gonna be something that we're gonna have to
learn about him and see what it looks like in
terms of that. But that's where you can kind of
check back with the Fangio tree in Okay, what does
Vic do that he might be able to take from
(15:36):
and pull from in terms of what he'll do in
his first head his first excuse me, defensive coordinator.
Speaker 5 (15:42):
Gig.
Speaker 6 (15:42):
There's a really good thread.
Speaker 7 (15:44):
Out there from from our friend Bobby Belt, who put
together a bunch of articles and video clips of Christian
Parker over the year, and one of the things that I.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Found whole death thought, Okay, all right, so we're gonna
tease that threat. So when we come back from our
first break, we're gonna have Tommy, So he'll do a threat.
We're gonna have Tommy go through a thread of things.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
Yeah, I got something. There's a good day.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
We're gonna We're gonna We're gonna have Tommy go through
a thread of some of the qualities and characteristics of
our new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker. And I also want
to have the question, thirty four years old, this is
the Dallas Cowboys. This is different than any other place
that he's ever coached in his life. Will the youthfulness
in Christian Parker kind of be a little bit of
(16:28):
an issue to being in this new environment of being
a Dallas Cowboys coach and the pressure that's now coming
along with that being defent quarter. All right, stay right
here with us. We'll come right back and we'll discuss
all of those things all hanging with the boys.

Welcome back to Hanging with the Boys on this Thursday
off season edition. We have some breaking news that we
went to in the first we'll get more into that.
Remember that this segment is brought to you by Blockchain
Blockchain Dot anywhere to go unless you've been living under
a Cowboy rock. Breaking news has happened right before our
(19:16):
show began. The Cowboys have casted their wide net. They
have got the caught. They have caught. They have got caught,
caught the god. They have caught the fish that they
have wanted. They are hiring former Philadelphia Egos passing game
coordinator and defensive back coach Christian Parker as their new
defensive coordinator. And we had went through what we thought
(19:38):
about it, our ideas, and we have in we having
young Tommy yursh Yarish, who has written many of things
about this entire search. Nine candidates today've reached out to
to to bring in for interviews. They have zoned in
and honed in on this one. And right before the break,
you were going into a Tommy that our good friend
(19:59):
Bobby Belt had put together a thread of just articles
and interviews and videos of Christian Parker speaking about his philosophies,
his teaching, his all of those things. So run us
through some of those things that that you saw in it.
Speaker 6 (20:15):
Right, if you want to go check it out.
Speaker 7 (20:16):
I just reposted it on Twitter as well, and Bobby
belt t X is his handle.
Speaker 6 (20:20):
If you want to go check it out from January
Sports Twitter.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (20:22):
On Twitter, you ain't got you haven't followed me back yet,
by the way, on Twitter kind of matters wow, wow, unbelievable.
You can't say wow either.
Speaker 5 (20:35):
Facebook.
Speaker 7 (20:36):
Facebook, it's X, thanks follow Tom.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
I didn't know I didn't follow you.
Speaker 7 (20:42):
So so so this is a it's a thread. There's
a couple of videos and some articles that have been
written on Christian Parker over the years, dating back to
when he was twenty nine in Denver. The first one
was from Denver Days talking about authenticity. Parker was quoted
saying players can sense if you're trying to be something
you're not, or trying to get asked a lack of preparation.
You can't keep that act up for long. So clearly
(21:04):
he's being genuine with his players, and I think that's
backed up by we've got this about note taking. Parker
keeps extensive digital notebookslogging daily observations and organizing them by
topics so that when future opportunities arose, he could reference
his own experiences instead of relying on memory alone.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
And then we talked.
Speaker 7 (21:22):
You talked about teaching, Jesse talking about teaching, Parker began
asking each player about their personal baseline process and then
structured meetings to complement, not override that approach. His goal
became consistency in what the group emphasized, and in terms
of being adaptable to different coaching styles and kind of
not one size fits all. He described his coaching philosophy
(21:44):
as coach and treat everyone fairly, but not the same.
Some thrive on being challenged publicly and meetings, while others
respond better to one on one correction. So it sounds
like you're getting a guy who's going to build good
relationships with his players, kind of like what Brian Schadheimer
island he was looking for, and he's going to get
a knack of what they excel at and how they learn,
(22:07):
because we all learned differently, right, you might be a
visual learner, you might be a written learner. Whatever it is,
I just couldn't learn at all, but figuring out what
that is look at us, I think figuring that out
of understanding that, especially with today's era of players where
there a lot of guys are younger, the game has
(22:29):
changed to the college level so much and even the
pro level that you know, everybody has a knack for
how they understand scheme and how they understand what their
assignment is. And the last one in terms of his
meetings was his meetings resemble these Socratic style classrooms he
enjoyed as a political science major players are frequently asked
(22:50):
to explain concepts, challenge ideas, or defend adjustments. Nobody is
allowed to sit quietly and coast it is.
Speaker 5 (22:56):
I like that last part. Yeah, yeah, I like that.
Speaker 6 (22:58):
I don't I don't know about you.
Speaker 7 (23:00):
But when I was in school and we did Socratic
seminars is what they were called, Uh, it was always
super uncomfortable because I don't know, I just didn't like
speaking up.
Speaker 6 (23:07):
But you want your.
Speaker 7 (23:08):
Players to be uncomfortable, right, and you want them to
be able to speak up and defend. Okay, hey coach,
I don't think we should be doing this, or hey coach,
maybe we should be doing this. So those are again
you We'll see if that continues to be the case
here in Dallas.
Speaker 6 (23:24):
But sounds like he's off to get Stane and see.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
I like that part, and a lot of times we
do sometimes here in this show, we go back on
the experiences that we've had and the things that we've
been able to garner over the years. And when I
hear that, it immediately takes me back to being in
New England. And that was like a Bill Belichick also
philosophy where he could see you in the lunch room
(23:49):
and he'll go tell me who Jesse, tell me who
the backup cornerback is? Old team playing this weekend. You
better have an answer like you better have an answer
like you What did I like to run? We went
through it last week. We went through earlier the week
what did I like to run? On third down?
Speaker 5 (24:04):
On coverage?
Speaker 1 (24:05):
You're sitting there trying to get you a sloppy Joe sandwich.
You know what I mean. He'll catch you in the
hallway you're coming out of the sauna and you go
into it. You would never you never sat comfortably in
a meeting because you never knew when a question was
going to be thrown your way. You never knew when
you were going to be asked to answer a question
(24:27):
from Bill Belichick from Josh McDaniels or one of your coaches,
and that was kind of that rang through the buildings.
So it made you, even when you didn't want to study,
it made you go and study because you're like Boll,
I would hate to be that guy in that meeting tomorrow.
He asked me a question I don't have to answer
because that ultimately would be a deal breaker and whether
(24:48):
you played or not, because.
Speaker 5 (24:50):
Man, I'm telling you we tested.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
Man I was wasn't the best at it, but to
be uncomfortable, but for that coach to know that you've.
Speaker 5 (24:59):
Got what he's trying to give you all week.
Speaker 4 (25:01):
You know, and I never failed because I can always
tell you what I was, what I needed to do,
So you're never gonna really fail. But it's even more
if you know what the rest of the guys going. Yeah, bro,
come on, man.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
I got this. No more on dalla speak right step
what we're doing.
Speaker 4 (25:20):
But that is the issue that this last coach, they say,
this last coach failed on this guys getting in games,
not knowing what to do, and everything that mister Tommy
has just said points to all of that. So we
(25:40):
should not going Now you're gonna have mistakes in every game, right, So,
but we should not have these four and five and
six because this coach is that guy.
Speaker 5 (25:52):
You know, this coach is supposed to be that guy.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
And one thing I'm looking I'll be looking for because
there is a difference. It's like it's like you have
somebody who can make who can cook, right, but it's
a difference between someone being able to cook and then
someone being able to cater It's a huge difference. It's
(26:19):
a difference between me making a meal for me, Tommy, Nate,
and Kurt, and then now I have to go and
make a meal for two hundred people. You know what
I'm saying. And so when you're a dB coach, that
room is very small seven eight guys. So I have
the time, energy and effort to segment things. I could
(26:44):
be more detailed with certain things because my group isn't
as large. Again, I'm only responsible for this group, and
I can get to know this group better. It's now
I have to xcrapulate that to forty guys, right, if
you know forty five guys, if you want to add
(27:06):
the practice squads guys in there. Now, Now I have
to be able to I gotta know forty five different
learning personalities. I gotta learn forty five different personal personalities.
I gotta learn forty five different temperaments. I gotta learn
forty five different everything, right, And so that's one of
the things that I'm looking for and saying, Okay, all
(27:29):
this stuff now has to be and that is I
guess that's the gift and the curse of hiring an
up and coming a younger guy is they're learning on
the job too.
Speaker 5 (27:40):
Right.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
The gift is that they're young, they're energetic, they have
new ideas, fresh ideas. They most likely relate to your
players in the culture of those guys. And sometimes the
curse could be you don't have experience being over the
entire group. And the one thing that I will always say,
(28:03):
I've been in three different organizations. I've been with the Bengals,
the Cowboys, and the Patriots. There's nothing like the Dallas
Cowboys when it comes to the coverage, when it comes
to and for and for Christian Parker, boy, you're talking
about shoes. That's not so that you have to feel
(28:24):
but expectations now that you have to feel. Phil coming
off one of the worst defenses in NFL history, the
worst defense in cowboy history and now they go.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
Here.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
Here you go, young fella, you have to turn this
around because I don't know about y'all. That's what all
ours will be on every time that there's an every
time we are looking at what are they doing on
the defense.
Speaker 4 (28:53):
But but a way of simplifying that, and I'm gonna
beat this hard man, this this horse. I'm gonna beat
this this horse. I'm gonna beat this horse. I'm gonna
beat it man.
Speaker 8 (29:07):
You you, you will, You will have to, y'all. All right,
you will have to as a defensive coordinator have a
message that every position coach.
Speaker 5 (29:25):
Can put out there, and you cannot.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
Back up off of your uh, your matra, your what
you believe in, uh you. You will have to be
there and believe in what you're saying and putting these
things in place.
Speaker 5 (29:43):
For that first year it can be Hey.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
This is what Tommy think, This is what Jesse thinking,
This is what Kurt think.
Speaker 5 (29:50):
No, this is what we think. And this is.
Speaker 4 (29:52):
Coming from the coordinator. Because once you have that leakage
your I really know, see that's what ran z them
out of here. That's what ran zam out here. Two
minute too many voices. It's got to be one voice.
When coach shot In Haimer leaves out of us and hey,
this is y'all new defensive coordinator.
Speaker 5 (30:13):
Hey, coach, break off. Talk to your group. Let them know.
Speaker 4 (30:17):
Everybody got to be of one accord. Man, everybody has
to be of one accord.
Speaker 9 (30:22):
I have a question that the talk. Now he's got
to go from his secondary to running the whole whole squad.
And maybe you explain this to me. I don't as
a passing game coordinator, is he had some experience? I
mean what I don't know for sure? How is a
passing game coordinator? Is he just handling certain aspects still
just the secondary, or is there some involvement in in
(30:45):
far as? Okay, here's how we're gonna rush, or here's
the linebacker.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
Well with coach Johnson and I don't know how the
guys you devil, but you always had opportunity to speak.
You know, he'll he'll put his coaches on black. Hey, coach,
get a explain this, and he'll let you explain to
the whole team, not just the defense, you know, And
he'll do that on a on a Wednesday when we
get back, or he'll do it on a Monday evening. Well,
(31:10):
you get a chance to address the whole team, you know,
not and put in just a small midget of the
game playing so that that don't mean that you great
when you get you have to do it for hours
on you know, at the time, but at least they
practice it.
Speaker 9 (31:26):
So he setting coordinators, He just kind of helping set
up whatever schemes and stuff that is then coverage handed
the coverages that are going to be handed to.
Speaker 1 (31:35):
That goes against the team that you're playing. The defense.
Speaker 9 (31:38):
Yeah, the defensive coordinator then when we're late or see
the one that's out there, kind of trying to lead
it and say here that as a passing is our
passing attack. Here's what we're doing.
Speaker 7 (31:47):
I think it's it's different everywhere, but for the most part,
it's secondary focus. Not It's not like it's not okay
on third down, I want these guys blitzing.
Speaker 6 (31:56):
I don't think it's as much.
Speaker 7 (31:57):
As that as like, okay on third down, we're going
to play, you know, with our heels at the line
the game, or we're gonna play press man.
Speaker 6 (32:04):
More more of that side of things.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
And it's and it's more of the breakdown. It's it's
all right. We're playing the Giants, all right. As a
passing game coordinator, I'm giving you everything that they do
in the passing game. So I'm giving you coverages, first
down coverages, second down coverages. Team I'm scouting the other team, right,
so I'm giving you. I'm breaking down you know what
what they do as far as the the their pass game,
(32:29):
and I'm setting our defense. I'm giving you what we
should be doing in the secondary and how we how
we cover it.
Speaker 9 (32:34):
Then the defensive coordinator takes that.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
And then put that in his game plan. Yeah yeah,
well so with the run game and all the other
kind of stuff. And that's how you formulate a plan
that goes into that week of all right, we're gonna
spend more time doing base defense or nickel. We're gonna
spend more time and dime. And then now on the
defense corner and go all right, boy, it's gonna be
a heavy dime week. Now Christian goes back and he goes,
(32:57):
all right, here we go secondary. These are the looks
that we're gonna get. You're playing there, you're playing there,
d da da da. So I don't know, let's take
out let's take our last break. When we come back
from that, we'll continue this conversation of the new defensive coordinator,
Christian Parker. The Cowboys have honed in on him and
we'll be hiring him as their new defensive coordinator. And
on top of that, got two first round picks. How
(33:19):
will the draft now look that we now have the
guy in charge, looking at some of his history, some
of the players that he's brought in, he's coached, and
how can we mimic some of that in this upcoming draft.
Stay right here with us. It's hanging with the boys.
We'll be right back.

Back to Hanging with the Bulls.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
Welcome back to Hanging with the Boys on our Thursday
slot the offseason edition, and boy, the one thing I
love about being covering the Cowboys is always news. We
are never We're never without news and the breaking news
today if you're just joining us. The Cowboys have hired
their defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, former Denver Bronco, former Green
(36:08):
Bay Packer, and most recently, former passing game coordinator and
dbi's coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. He will now don
the Star. You know, we mean, I might do a
tweet search. Oh, mister Parker, you know him being over
there with those with those Philadelphia Egles. He might have
said something about the Cowboys back in the day we
might have put now I'm his plan, but that is
(36:28):
the new hire thirty four years old. His coaching styles,
his teaching styles, his ability to develop some young talent
in this league. All will be necessary. All will be
necessary for the Cowboys, as they had the worst defense
in Cowboy history this past season. Coming out, Yeah, coming
(36:49):
off the heels of ebra Flus being in charge, and
Tom You said something in the break You and Chris
Beam said, Hey, this guy's got the easiest job in
the world. Is only one way for this worst The
only one way for this go is up.
Speaker 7 (37:02):
It literally cannot get any worse. So does that mean
he's guaranteed two years?
Speaker 6 (37:06):
No, nobody ever is. But man, it would be really bad. Man,
let me tell you next year.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
And so the Cowboys right now they find themselves. You
have your head coach and your office cordinator, Brian Schottenheimer.
You now have your defensive coordinator and Christian Parker, and
you're sitting at number twelve and number twenty and this
year's NFL draft, we know the history of Parker being
the DB's coach, and that's probably going to be an
(37:34):
emphasis that he is banging the table for when he's
talking to Will McLay and everybody that's scouting apartment about
what he wants. But how can the Cowboys now that
they have their guys, what should their draft kind of
look like? Does this shift the order of how things go?
Speaker 5 (37:50):
Nate, No, just let me get that a little bit.
Oh yes, go ahead, let me remember the people.
Speaker 4 (37:56):
Just like any passing coordinator, the first per soon he
go talk to his offensive line, you can't put you.
You can't run certain routes without certain protections, you can't
do certain coverages without certain past rush responsibilities.
Speaker 5 (38:13):
So he will have to be in step block.
Speaker 4 (38:16):
With his defensive line coach because you just don't want
to be willing nilly because sometimes what if they want
to do his own blitz, you know, like that he's
always gonna be talking to the linebackers, but now you're
gonna to involve more often than not. He's probably already
did that with mister vanrew up. There is you got
to be in steplock with your defensive line coach because
(38:37):
your front end gotta be definitely lined up with your
back end.
Speaker 5 (38:40):
So that's just the answer that. Yeah, and to go
and do what Jesse is talking about. It all starts
with free agent for.
Speaker 4 (38:45):
Okay, it all if we if we if we wait
four weeks, in three weeks in saying hey, this is
the man we were going to be doing it wrong.
This is what has to change, Jesse. You've always been
on you. You didn't you didn't talk about it enough,
(39:06):
and I'm gonna I'm going at it.
Speaker 5 (39:08):
Man.
Speaker 4 (39:08):
If we don't do anything in free agency, I mean
get some real players in free agency, not not practice
squad guys, not guys that you know somebody don't want
on ay roster.
Speaker 5 (39:17):
I'm talking about some of the front end guys.
Speaker 4 (39:20):
And if we don't do that, you got too many
holes to feel if you don't do free agency at
least three or four good solid individual starters. Yes, we
hurting ourselves. We be putting this new coach behind the
eight ball.
Speaker 5 (39:35):
So if we do.
Speaker 4 (39:37):
See somebody in the draft defensively that we may want
to move up and get, we'll have that option.
Speaker 5 (39:42):
You know.
Speaker 7 (39:43):
Yeah, moving up I think would be difficult only because
you don't have a Day two pick, and that would
probably be what you need to throw in there to
move up unless you wanted to package both of your
first round picks.
Speaker 6 (39:55):
No, really high up The only.
Speaker 7 (39:58):
Guy that I watched so far in these draft prospects
that I would even think about doing that for is
Caleb Downs, the safety from Ohio State. And I know
you hear safety and you think, oh, top ten.
Speaker 6 (40:11):
No, Well, I think this guy's a little different.
Speaker 7 (40:15):
I think he is taking command of that Ohio State defense,
one of the smartest players.
Speaker 6 (40:19):
Every time he's on the field.
Speaker 7 (40:20):
He's the smartest player on the field, and he makes
plays all over the place in the box, in coverage.
Speaker 6 (40:25):
He's going to be one of the best safety prospects
that we've seen in a while.
Speaker 7 (40:28):
But to your point, yes, it is something where you're
probably not going to move up.
Speaker 6 (40:32):
Downs will probably not be there.
Speaker 7 (40:35):
But I will give you guys this Cooper Dejene was
just quoted about him about Christian Parker I should say,
and he said, I can say a lot of things
about what he's meant to me and Quinnon Mitchell two
we've had a routine of we go meet with him
two or three times a week to go over the
team we're playing, or to go.
Speaker 6 (40:50):
Over different looks.
Speaker 7 (40:51):
I don't think i'd be the player I am or
have the success that I've had without him He's pored
a lot into me and Quinnon two ever since we
got here.
Speaker 6 (40:58):
I appreciate him for that.
Speaker 7 (40:59):
Not everyone knows, and I don't think he gets to
the recognition that I think he should.
Speaker 1 (41:03):
I think the thing that what stood out to me
the most about that quote was quinnyn Mitchell and I
went to That's what stands out to me the most.
Will we have the guys in here We're after this
multiple times on our show. Is when I hear we
(41:30):
don't understand, we're confused. That tells me all I need
to know. That tells me that I have a bunch
of players who are not studying. That means I have
a bunch of players. When practice is over and meetings
are over, they both out of here. When you have
(41:51):
guys like you just read and said, we go meet
with him two to three times a week, that means
that ain't during meetings. That's either coming in early before
or staying late after. That's the level of commitment of
the type of players that the Cowboys need to be
(42:12):
looking to bring in. And I hope that now that
Christian Parker is here, he could identify some of those guys,
because that's what it takes the good ones go. I
need to know what it is you want from me,
so much so that you and not are finishing each
other's sentences. It's like a marriage. And so when I
(42:34):
hear that we go and meet with him two or
three times a week, that's initiative. That's the professionalism that
we're looking for from players. I can almost guarantee you
it hasn't been that way in the past.
Speaker 5 (42:48):
Here.
Speaker 1 (42:48):
Defensively, that outside of your required meeting time when it
was over break lights, that's what y'all you were seeing
Peo Piero, Piero Pierio and Pierium Tallway race out of here.
It wasn't guy that was sticking around like I had
(43:10):
the fortune and I'm and you'll probably say the same.
I had the fortune of playing with some guys like that. Defensively,
you can walk in here. You can walk in and
I was in Valley Ranch. You can walk in Valley
Rant just about any time of the day, day or night.
You walk into one of that you are in one
of the meeting rooms. The Linebacker meeting Room, number fifty
was in there. Char Lee was in there. Chorn Lee
(43:34):
was in there. And if nobody was in the building.
He was in a big meeting room to get the
bigger screen. You walk in there. You look, you were
open the door and what's up, y'all? He and there
with the clicker, you know what I mean? Like there
were there were guys who were like that, who were
sitting those meeting rooms and would have the game plan
down to a t. Because I always said this about communication.
(44:02):
If I am an expert in something and I am
in a group project, I'm not silent when I hear
teams saying that, oh, we're confused, the communication is off.
That tells me the people who aren't in this group
project don't know what's going on, so nobody's talking. I'm sorry.
That's just what it is. If I'm in a room
(44:24):
with all these people and the conversation that comes up
about something that I know about, I ain't keepn quiet.
Speaker 4 (44:31):
What's that big word he used when you said it is?
He said about how what type of meetings does does
he have?
Speaker 5 (44:37):
You know, it's way back. You probably don't even remember.
Speaker 6 (44:40):
Oh Socratic, Yeah meetings, Yeah, so.
Speaker 4 (44:42):
I mean not secret meetings had cowboys, not secret?
Speaker 6 (44:48):
You never had a Socratic seminar.
Speaker 4 (44:50):
I probably had a thousand of them and didn't pay attention.
But yeah, yeah he was there.
Speaker 1 (44:55):
Yeah yeah, yeah, what we no is fine?
Speaker 5 (45:02):
Fine?
Speaker 1 (45:04):
Yeah, I mean about that.
Speaker 5 (45:07):
I like that. I like that. But tell me, tell me,
believe me, Bro, you need to hang with the boys
a bit.
Speaker 6 (45:15):
Logan, I love this show.
Speaker 7 (45:19):
Coming to your point of Okay, do the Cowboys have
players that are going to have that hunger of I
want to meet with coach and I want to ask
coach questions. I'll give you one of them because we
heard all the time Mario guy, I want to talk
about corner position. But I'm sure weird all the time.
While this guy was rehabbing, like he will not stop
(45:40):
asking questions. These coaches just non stop asking questions, and
he's itching to get back on the field. This is
the v one revel Like this kid is hungry to
be a good player in the NFL and he would
just consistently ask Andre Curtis and David Overstreet the safeties
and defensive backs coach all the time, Hey what about
this am I supposed to be here and just try
to understand what it is that he needs to do.
(46:02):
When he got onto the field, he had an up
and down rookie season. It wasn't a great rookie year,
but he's that kind of player you will see in
that meeting room with the clicker or meeting with coach
however many times a week. It is obviously things will
change now that he's a defensive coordinator, not just a
secondary's coach. But he's gonna be one of those guys
that's gonna make sure he's in the right spot at
the right time.
Speaker 1 (46:21):
We need at least at least eleven what do he seven?
We need seven?
Speaker 8 (46:28):
Thing?
Speaker 4 (46:30):
The thing is this right here, This coach fits everything
that we've talked about development uh being there all about
the players. Jesse, I'm gonna repeat what you just said,
is we got twenty five Savonne revels. Is we got
twenty five overshowns. You know, are we gonna try to
(46:56):
reinvent guys that we know can't play. That's a big
question for me because you know, y'all rather ever heard
me say anything bad about player. But it's some guys
need to lead this building. I don't care who they
bring in. Some guys need to lead this building. And
when OTAs come up, you know we should be like man,
(47:17):
we ain't got enough players out there because we done
got rid of a lot of guys.
Speaker 5 (47:22):
Bro and I just believe that.
Speaker 1 (47:24):
All right, Well that's it for our show today, Kurt.
We didn't get to none of the questions. We'll save
them for next week. They breaking news, Yeah, we have
breaking news that happened right before the show. We always
appreciate your hard work that you put in to keep
this thing online as much as you possibly can. But yeah, Nate,
appreciate you.
Speaker 5 (47:42):
Come.
Speaker 1 (47:46):
We'll get that. We'll get that medical report on Shannon
and see what that Mexican flu is. Jesus and I
hope you're feeling better, man. But uh for Tommy, for Kurt,
for Nate, for Chris being didn't break out Shannon, Yeah,
he might have put his face a where he belonged
to Mexico.
Speaker 6 (48:03):
Two nas her face.
Speaker 1 (48:06):
I have your boy salt and pepper poppy faces.
Speaker 6 (48:08):
What you said, Oh my god.
Speaker 1 (48:11):
This is hanging with the boys.
Speaker 5 (48:13):
We out.
Speaker 2 (48:14):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
