he said, but we we had a healthy sense of
fear of him. And when we began, he said, Jimmy
became enjoyable once you did the work that was required

to win. He said, if you weren't doing the work
that required to his standard to win, then you wasn't
going to like him because he was going to make
it very uncomfortable for you. He was going to make
it very tough for you. He was going to make
it to a place to where you no longer wanted.

But when you did the work and it was to
the standard and the winning came behind it, yeah, you
enjoyed being around him. We had fun and he was
you know, lighthearted and all those other things. But when
you crossed that line of the work not getting done
to the standard of which he held, then it was

it was rule. It was rude by an iron fist.
And that's what I called. I just you know, and
then Nate fashioned. I just called for one question forty
five minutes later. I called for one question forty five
minutes later. But the information that we talked about and
that he gave me about this conversation is why I

shake my head about the higher because it doesn't match up.
It doesn't seem like this is going to be one
of those things. And I think the last couple of times,
because when you begin to look for comfortability, familiarity, and

apple card to your point. I'm not always there with

be able to have a healthy dose of fear injected
into these men.

The unfamiliar, the unfamiliar opposite of what they're seem to
be doing.

The unfamiliar, but not just not just on the surface,
but thrown through being able to say, no, star player,
you can't be late for a meeting and still play.

Get a coach like that, strike fear into the players,
so to speak, and also work with Jerry Jones.

It's the working part is and here's the thing between
an owner and a general manager. The working part should
be give me what I need and I'll give you
the results. Right, give me what I need, get out
of my way. You hired me to do a job.
(12:07):
I'm gonna give you a list of guys that I
need for offense, for defense, for special teams, whatever it
may have. You as a general manager, your job is
now to make this all work, make the financials work,
make the roster work. If we need to make a trade,
if we need to find some free agents. That's the work.
This is like this whole coaching thing in GM thing.
(12:31):
It's not a collaboration like Hey, I need you in
here with me to tell me what to do on No,
it's basically you hired me, give me what I need
and let me cook and with that we get we
get dubs. But as the head coach, I rule this,
I rule this. I have the final say so and
(12:53):
what goes on in here. Now, I'll come to you
and consult you on some things. But this isn't This
isn't a thing where you are going to constantly be
telling me what pieces the move where, who should be playing? No, no, no,
no no. That's how it's done. That's how the good
teams do it. That's how the good teams do it.

And now you see that yield success, you see the
fruits of that labor. But it's when you have the
the when you have the the when a portion of
the locker room understands that you don't really control what
we do that week, that hurts. And this is the
(13:37):
part that Nate was talking about. Was wasn't nobody jumping
over Jimmy head? No, wasn't nobody going when Jimmy said
you going? Wasn't nobody jumping over that and going to
see somebody else? Oh, Jimmy said you ain't playing or
I'm finding you, I'm doing this, or I'm doing that
with you. You couldn't jump over his head and get
the OK from somewhere else. And now he holds your
hand and walk you back into my office, and now

we have to come to an agreement or what we're gonna.

It was once you said go, I went and and
and the results of that is what we're gonna live with.
And for the coaching part of it is if I
have success, then you look good. If I don't have success,
that's when you fired me, like any other job. And

that's the biggest thing that we sometimes, you know, we
we we find ourselves talking about and maybe running into
and facing is the healthy fear that was had in
the nineties. That healthy fear is no longer present because
(14:45):
the people who need to have the healthy fear and
make and make no mistake about it, things are watched
very closely in locker rooms. And so if if you're
the star player, or you're the player who is presented
to us as that guy, whether that be through productivity
(15:05):
or salary, and I can watch you do certain things
or lack thereof, Now I might not be able to
go full what you go. But I have a laying
where I go, and I'm and I'm doing my my
my nonsense, all my all my eyes are not dotted,
all my teas are not crossed, because I've seen you
(15:28):
as a superstar, not dot all your eyes and cross
all your tea's. So what ends up happening is, yeah,
you might be able to get away with it because
of who you are, and they may yell at me
a little bit. But now what happens is we have
all of these gaps. There's a gap in Uh, there's
(15:48):
a gap in in and in structure. There's a gap
in attention to details. Uh, there's a gap in seriousness.
There's a gap in the studies. There's a gap in
the practice habits. There's a gap in how we practice.
There's a gap in how we review film and how
we study. There's a gap in learning the information. There's
a gap and how we prepare on practices and game days.
(16:11):
So and what happens is the to to some of
it all up is the devil is in the details.
Too many areas have gaps. That's where the lock thereof
comes in. And when you go out there on Sundays,
those small little gaps that were created through how things
(16:32):
were because they weren't corrected. They weren't nipped in the bud,
they weren't the doors weren't slammed. The stars of the
team didn't have all they idd doted and teased crossing,
so all other people were doing the same thing. Now
what you have in those gaps. Losses fall in those gaps,
the communication falls in those gaps, the details falls in
those gaps, and now there's penalties, and now there's all
(16:54):
the little things that we see happen on Sunday. It
starts there, and that that's why I look at this
higher and I go, I don't need somebody, so gona
come in and be able to still be buddy buddy
with the dudes, because now guys in that locker room
already know they got social media. They're looking like nobody
even else wants you.

And then the gaps, like.
Speaker 7 (17:20):
Just out of the gaps that you're talking about, trying
to find a proper word when and then when you
don't have the players, the gaps turning the canyons.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
Because you're trying to you have no authority. So I'm
trying to come talk to you.
Speaker 7 (17:39):
Just a star, you know, his right hand man kicking
it with him and hey, go you over here, my guy,
which ain't much. I mean, I ain't trying to down
up it, which ain't much. What you're gonna do, You're
gonna start acting up. I can't even control you now.
So what do you think the fifty third guy is
thinking when they say, hey man, you late?

It got to be more than that.

was holding those cards when I was on the scout
team and I wouldn't do what he was supposed to
be asking me to do. They thin a he't gonna
bring me back, you know. So that's the conversation of
some guys are saying, like, man, what the this? God, Man,
that offense ain't gonna be some guy by big excited.
Some guy be like Ben bro We ain't got to

learn a new offense. We can get the same thing.
So there's a host of things. But they're talking. Guys
are talking, Guys are trying to smart out. I'm trying
to find out, all right, what's the next move gonna be.

rookie deal. Next year they can build the team around.

Washington has the second highest, second or third highest amount
of money that they can spend heading into the offseason.

the division caught up with the Cowboys? And my thinking

was was it so much they caught up or the
Cowboys fell back? And yes, Philly has got Philly out
of Barkley Washington, added Daniels, that sort of thing. But
at the same time, you know, if you're not getting better,
getting worse and the Cowboys took a big drop back.

No, the answer to you to that is yes, right,
like they got better, Cowboys got worse. The answers is yes.

We had this discussion when he called me about one
sub and I jumped over to the Washington team. They
have always been one quarterback away for the last six years.

sign more guys they can. They have the money to
go out there and keep adding on to that team
with premium prospects, premium free agents. They don't have to
go by, you know, bottom of the barrel bargain shopping.
They have enough money that they can go out and

go and sign. You know, I'll just give you a
wild example. I'm not saying this is gonna happen, but
Khalil mack right is an unrestricted free agent. Reports came
back that he has decided that he's gonna play another year.
They have enough money where they could say, you know what, Khalil, come, come,

come be for us what Vonnald Miller was for the
Broncos when they won their championship. Come come be the
finished shirt. Just be third, be a third downs past
Russ specialist. We'll give you one year twenty million.

Dollars like Graham did for Philadelphia.

You know what I'm saying, Like, they have money where
they can just throw it and not have to suffer
the consequences of it. Not you know, won't hurt their
cap again, and they can do that for the next
couple of years because their quarterback is on a rookie deal.
These doesn't really work that way though. What doesn't work

Well, you say that there their second in cap, they're
actually third, Okay, third, I said second or third? Say
the third? Okay, that's fine, But they only have thirty
four guys in their contract, right, That's what I'm saying.

those guys that they want to and go and get
premier and you still have to fill those gas.

not in a death It's one thing to be in
the deficit. It's one thing to be at the low

And the option that you have, and this is what

extra guys, but now you can say, hey, man, we're winning, right,

I take a little bit less money, but these dudes,
it got a shot at there going deep in the playoffs.

your team currently constructed is a good enough team obviously
to play in the NFC Championship game. So now you
just start. Now I can pick and choose where I

I want to get real specific there, right, if I
want to do a third down pass Russian specialist, if
I or if I want to go put a little
bit of money in. You know, there's a there's a
there's an offensive lineman that I really like that I'm saying,
you know what, this might this might be the finishing
touch here. I'm not so I'm not going into this
thing so desperate for my draft isn't desperate. My off

season spending and choosing isn't desperate. I don't have a
pluthoro of needs that I'm going into. So I just
say all that to look at it and go, you know,
when they come back next year, when Philly comes back
next year, like they're they're coming back already locked and
loaded and just moving on. Uh from there. We already
seen it, and I know that Philly will have catch

issue down the road, whatever that comes to about. But
but the way how he's done it in Philly has
been like, won't worry about that when that day comes.

some of these guys are feeling when it comes to

he said, but we we had a healthy sense of
fear of him. And when we began, he said, Jimmy

that required to his standard to win, then you wasn't
going to like him because he was going to make
it very uncomfortable for you. He was going to make
it very tough for you. He was going to make
it to a place to where you no longer wanted.

But when you did the work and it was to
the standard and the winning came behind it, yeah, you
enjoyed being around him. We had fun and he was
you know, lighthearted and all those other things. But when
you crossed that line of the work not getting done
to the standard of which he held, then it was

it was rule. It was rude by an iron fist.
And that's what I called. I just you know, and
then Nate fashioned. I just called for one question forty
five minutes later. I called for one question forty five
minutes later. But the information that we talked about and
that he gave me about this conversation is why I

shake my head about the higher because it doesn't match up.
It doesn't seem like this is going to be one
of those things. And I think the last couple of times,
because when you begin to look for comfortability, familiarity, and

apple card to your point. I'm not always there with

the circus, but to have someone come in that will
be able to have a healthy dose of fear injected
into these men.

The unfamiliar, the unfamiliar opposite of what they're seem to
be doing.

The unfamiliar, but not just not just on the surface,
but thrown through being able to say, no, star player,
you can't be late for a meeting and still play.

Get a coach like that, strike fear into the players,
so to speak, and also work with Jerry Jones.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
It's the working part is and here's the thing between
an owner and a general manager. The working part should
be give me what I need and I'll give you
the results. Right, give me what I need, get out
of my way. You hired me to do a job.
(12:07):
I'm gonna give you a list of guys that I
need for offense, for defense, for special teams, whatever it
may have. You as a general manager, your job is
now to make this all work, make the financials work,
make the roster work. If we need to make a trade,
if we need to find some free agents. That's the work.
This is like this whole coaching thing in GM thing.
(12:31):
It's not a collaboration like Hey, I need you in
here with me to tell me what to do on No,
it's basically you hired me, give me what I need
and let me cook and with that we get we
get dubs. But as the head coach, I rule this,
I rule this. I have the final say so and
(12:53):
what goes on in here. Now, I'll come to you
and consult you on some things. But this isn't This
isn't a thing where you are going to constantly be
telling me what pieces the move where, who should be playing? No, no, no,
no no. That's how it's done. That's how the good
teams do it. That's how the good teams do it.
(13:15):
And now you see that yield success, you see the
fruits of that labor. But it's when you have the
the when you have the the when a portion of
the locker room understands that you don't really control what
we do that week, that hurts. And this is the
(13:37):
part that Nate was talking about. Was wasn't nobody jumping
over Jimmy head? No, wasn't nobody going when Jimmy said
you going? Wasn't nobody jumping over that and going to
see somebody else? Oh, Jimmy said you ain't playing or
I'm finding you, I'm doing this, or I'm doing that
with you. You couldn't jump over his head and get
the OK from somewhere else. And now he holds your
hand and walk you back into my office, and now
(13:58):
we have to come to an agreement or what we're gonna.

It was once you said go, I went and and
and the results of that is what we're gonna live with.
And for the coaching part of it is if I
have success, then you look good. If I don't have success,
that's when you fired me, like any other job. And

that's the biggest thing that we sometimes, you know, we
we we find ourselves talking about and maybe running into
and facing is the healthy fear that was had in
the nineties. That healthy fear is no longer present because
(14:45):
the people who need to have the healthy fear and
make and make no mistake about it, things are watched
very closely in locker rooms. And so if if you're
the star player, or you're the player who is presented
to us as that guy, whether that be through productivity
(15:05):
or salary, and I can watch you do certain things
or lack thereof, Now I might not be able to
go full what you go. But I have a laying
where I go, and I'm and I'm doing my my
my nonsense, all my all my eyes are not dotted,
all my teas are not crossed, because I've seen you
(15:28):
as a superstar, not dot all your eyes and cross
all your tea's. So what ends up happening is, yeah,
you might be able to get away with it because
of who you are, and they may yell at me
a little bit. But now what happens is we have
all of these gaps. There's a gap in Uh, there's
(15:48):
a gap in in and in structure. There's a gap
in attention to details. Uh, there's a gap in seriousness.
There's a gap in the studies. There's a gap in
the practice habits. There's a gap in how we practice.
There's a gap in how we review film and how
we study. There's a gap in learning the information. There's
a gap and how we prepare on practices and game days.
(16:11):
So and what happens is the to to some of
it all up is the devil is in the details.
Too many areas have gaps. That's where the lock thereof
comes in. And when you go out there on Sundays,
those small little gaps that were created through how things
(16:32):
were because they weren't corrected. They weren't nipped in the bud,
they weren't the doors weren't slammed. The stars of the
team didn't have all they idd doted and teased crossing,
so all other people were doing the same thing. Now
what you have in those gaps. Losses fall in those gaps,
the communication falls in those gaps, the details falls in
those gaps, and now there's penalties, and now there's all
(16:54):
the little things that we see happen on Sunday. It
starts there, and that that's why I look at this
higher and I go, I don't need somebody, so gona
come in and be able to still be buddy buddy
with the dudes, because now guys in that locker room
already know they got social media. They're looking like nobody
even else wants you.

And then the gaps, like.
Speaker 7 (17:20):
Just out of the gaps that you're talking about, trying
to find a proper word when and then when you
don't have the players, the gaps turning the canyons.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
Because you're trying to you have no authority. So I'm
trying to come talk to you.
Speaker 7 (17:39):
Just a star, you know, his right hand man kicking
it with him and hey, go you over here, my guy,
which ain't much. I mean, I ain't trying to down
up it, which ain't much. What you're gonna do, You're
gonna start acting up. I can't even control you now.
So what do you think the fifty third guy is
thinking when they say, hey man, you late?

Well. Most coaches gonna have knowledge of who you are.

be able to make adjustments on their offenses and defense
for these superstar type players. But that just goes back
to what Coach John's used to tell me. First of all,
your leaders is unquestionable to have a thirst that you

a city, because these guys should have a level of

ex defensive coordinator on the other, and whole string of
players in the game. I mean, it's kind of it's
just tough to take.

Right with Saquan and that receiver duo, you should be
running circles. But that I bet that defensive that defensive
coordinator you had here being a head coach and making
anything you.

Want to know, what's going to be the depressing But
what should be the depressing part is that you were
having showers better than Washington and in one year they're
in the NFC Championship Game. On top of that, their
quarterback still has three to four more years on his
rookie deal. Next year they can build the team around.

Next year, Washington has the second currently sitting right now,
Washington has the second highest, second or third highest amount
of money that they can spend heading into the offseason.

Because you could, couldn't you argue that this like talent wise,
barring injuries, talent wise, the Cowboys have now now that
they have a quarterback that they do you can debate
that whatever you want, But like surrounding that position on
offensive defense, the Cowboys might have more talent than Washington.

I you know, I remember we had this question on
during the summer. The website does a series of twenty questions,
and one of the questions was had the rest of
the division caught up with the Cowboys? And my thinking

was was it so much they caught up or the
Cowboys fell back? And yes, Philly has got Philly out
of Barkley Washington, added Daniels, that sort of thing. But
at the same time, you know, if you're not getting better,
getting worse and the Cowboys took a big drop back.
Speaker 4 (37:49):
No, the answer to you to that is yes, right,
like they got better, Cowboys got worse. The answers is yes.
Speaker 7 (37:56):
We had this discussion when he called me about one
sub and I jumped over to the Washington team. They
have always been one quarterback away for the last six years.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
They have always been a quarterback away.
Speaker 7 (38:10):
Remember I wanted the brother fire last year because he
was killing the quarterback, would not run. I was in
love you to death, but I wanted you gone because
you had a good running back in this kid, and
they had another kid that they let go. This is
the same team, Fellas, that's been sitting there for four
or five years.

Two things have changed.
Speaker 7 (38:30):
The head coach got rid of the owner, brought in
another guy, and in the quarterback, it's.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
The same team. Go back and look up on paper.
It's the same team.

Come on, man, and you know what they ain't talking about.
Hey man, we got knocked out in the division around
They in the NFC championship game. Two teams from our division.
It's in the NFC.

I'm not NFC, but the NFC Championship game. Come on, man, I.

Wonder how many times in the history of the league
that two teams teams from the same.

Division, same division and conference.

Do you think the Cowboys are significantly behind those other
two or is it just you know, by next season
you turn things around, you're not playing the first place schedule,
and all of a sudden You're.

Back to my point earlier about Washington all they're gonna
they're gonna have, They're gonna draft good, and they're gonna
sign more guys they can. They have the money to
go out there and keep adding on to that team
with premium prospects, premium free agents. They don't have to
go by, you know, bottom of the barrel bargain shopping.
They have enough money that they can go out and
(39:40):
go and sign. You know, I'll just give you a
wild example. I'm not saying this is gonna happen, but
Khalil mack right is an unrestricted free agent. Reports came
back that he has decided that he's gonna play another year.
They have enough money where they could say, you know what, Khalil, come, come,
(40:01):
come be for us what Vonnald Miller was for the
Broncos when they won their championship. Come come be the
finished shirt. Just be third, be a third downs past
Russ specialist. We'll give you one year twenty million.
Speaker 1 (40:13):
Dollars like Graham did for Philadelphia.
Speaker 4 (40:16):
You know what I'm saying, Like, they have money where
they can just throw it and not have to suffer
the consequences of it. Not you know, won't hurt their
cap again, and they can do that for the next
couple of years because their quarterback is on a rookie deal.
These doesn't really work that way though. What doesn't work
that way?
Speaker 8 (40:31):
Well, you say that there their second in cap, they're
actually third, Okay, third, I said second or third? Say
the third? Okay, that's fine, But they only have thirty
four guys in their contract, right, That's what I'm saying.

They say that they have to pay, right, but they don't.
They're they're they're not strapped where they now can't pay
those guys that they want to and go and get
premier and you still have to fill those gas.
Speaker 8 (40:53):
Yeah, that's fine, but that money's gonna get chewed up
pretty right way.
Speaker 4 (40:57):
But I'm not in a depth aware of that. I'm
not in a death It's one thing to be in
the deficit. It's one thing to be at the low
end of it.

You don't have to bargain shop.
Speaker 4 (41:05):
I don't have to bargain shop. I can do whatever,
I can do whatever I want.
Speaker 7 (41:09):
And the option that you have, and this is what
I always hated about the forty nine ers and when
and when the Seahawks were rolling And the option that
you have now is not only do you have a
little cap space and you still got to sign those
extra guys, but now you can say, hey, man, we're winning, right,
So for guys on the tract years, see, like, man,

I take a little bit less money, but these dudes,
it got a shot at there going deep in the playoffs.

And that helps.

I mean, that does make a difference when you get
you know, you're rolling up on you last few years
and mass man, we're gonna you know, are you want
to prove yourself. You know nobody's signed you during the
off season, but you're a quality player.

That that winning helps.

See, these are the type these are the type of
teams when you go and you add like I said,
you add those little those veteran pieces, those veteran guys.
You know what I'm saying. Like in there your depth,
that's your depth comes into play because you're right now,
your team currently constructed is a good enough team obviously
to play in the NFC Championship game. So now you
just start. Now I can pick and choose where I

want to. Oh, I want to I want to get
I want to get real specific there, right, if I
want to do a third down pass Russian specialist, if
I or if I want to go put a little
bit of money in. You know, there's a there's a
there's an offensive lineman that I really like that I'm saying,
you know what, this might this might be the finishing
touch here. I'm not so I'm not going into this
thing so desperate for my draft isn't desperate. My off

season spending and choosing isn't desperate. I don't have a
pluthoro of needs that I'm going into. So I just
say all that to look at it and go, you know,
when they come back next year, when Philly comes back
next year, like they're they're coming back already locked and
loaded and just moving on. Uh from there. We already
seen it, and I know that Philly will have catch

issue down the road, whatever that comes to about. But
but the way how he's done it in Philly has
been like, won't worry about that when that day comes.

But right now everybody ms was going to happen all
the cap.
Speaker 4 (43:10):
They'd be down for have it down year, one year,
come back up, read it back up, be bad for
a year. You know, and then Boom were back at
it again.

But how big of a deal before we get out
of here, is it that, uh, Fossil went to the
Titans for the same, the same.

What happened with that? Did you get it? Inside scoop

Just I think that's a telling sign too that a
guy you have arguably the best kicker in the league,
give or take right, you can that's an argument debatable.
You have the best pump kick return in the league.
I don't know how much you want a debate on that,
whether come on the conversation, right, he's in the conversation,
and you know what I'm saying, Like he ain't. He

ain't out of the top two or three. It neither
is Brandon Aubrey. And for a special teams guy that
is that's like having an elite quarterback. You know what
I'm saying, I got a kicker and a specialist and
he goes, I'm gonna go to a team who had
the worst record than the team I just left. Like

that just tells you a little bit about how maybe
some of these guys are feeling when it comes to
all that is amy umbrella.

Personal brand standpoint, Like the brand doesn't get any bigger
than you know, you're on TV more, there's more recognition
if you're wanting to elevate your career.
Speaker 4 (44:36):
This is not a good look right now, just not
a good look all across the board.

For he had to deal, he had to take it.

He couldn't wait, what if, what if the Cowboys offer
this or how much or whatever?

So I can't blame him.

I can't a man in that feeling. Bro, Well, if

Wow, I just felt when when the guy walked away,
I just felt so bad.

With your special teams coordinator, I mean that maybe don't
have quite as big an impact as your offensive decent
defensive coordinator.
