Caleb downs the news that I just got. And it's

so uh yeah. So that tells me that this kid
is as adveratars I say all that to say Caleb
Downs is as he is the real deal what we need.

lot about Malachi Lwrence, but we do know that he's
a hustle guy. This is what I'm getting out of
all of this. He's a hustle guy. He's the guy

a motor, And so I am excited about that because
the Dallas Cowboys, Kurt, you guys, I believe that we
need players, guys that gonna come in and play. And

that are smart and got a high motor. And all
of these guys as of right now, and we it
was like twenty five of them just went by the
lunch room going in to talk to.

like it because they geared this thing to the new NFL,

the guy who is behind all of the work that
gets put into getting these guys to a point or
the information to the coaches that get these guys to
a point to become drafted. And you know and that

person is Will McLay. He joined my show yesterday. And
this draft, when you look at it, Kurt, there is
and everything that you look at the word, especially from
the defensive side. Versatility. Yes, they want versatile guys. They
want guys who to your point nate intelligence, who can

play multiple positions, can do multiple things on the field.
The new way of the NFL to have that motor.
But the biggest thing is that level of versatility. So, Kurt,
for you, how do you feel about the the Cowboys
did in this draft? They did they from what you
know from hearing from Christian Parker? Did they meet the
expectation player wise of what you think can help Christian

Parker in this defense?

I think so and I hope so because it sounded
like Parker made a lot of those picks. I mean
those are guys he liked. Yeah, so they definitely geared
their draft towards helping him out, and so I thought
it was great. I mean they I don't know if
they could have done the first round much better. I
mean they gave up the two fifth rounders to to
get go up and get downs. Thankfully, he dropped far enough.

But then they picked up two fourth rounders when they
moved back to get to get Lawrence, and Lawrence wasn't
I mean, he was a fast riser late in the
draft process, but it looks like he's got the speed
and the size and everything you want. And then as Barsham,
kid Barham, excuse me out of Michigan. I mean he
he's not a line they're talking about moving the linebackers.

You say that, you say Michigan, and all of a sudden,
now people people start having that PTSD and it's funny.

even more like talking to my guy this morning in
it and feel how you feel. You know, people that
you know, when you trust, will help you feel about

to trust in a little bit more.

But yeah, I thought they did a really good job. Again,

Caleb is. Caleb will carry this draft. This draft will
be how good Caleb downs is or not. And he
is he is already because of the hype that comes
around him, the size of the shoes that he has
to fill, it looked like Ronald McDonald's right, like like
clown shoes like that.

that has not given an extremely high level of praise.
So I think he'll live up to it. There is
a difference between NFL, I mean between NFL and college
and I don't care what level of college. You played
on you know, SEC, Big ten, Big twelve, acc doesn't matter.
You come to the big boys show. It's different.

don't know if he's been on this.

Malaki Lawrence, in all that he brings.

speed that they want, and they're putting a lot of

in Christian Parker is through the roof.

His ability to explain the game and teach the game
in such a way that it's able to be it's
able to be ingested and then regurgitated on the football field,
and and with with with speed, with force, with physicality.
The second thing I think that they're they're really relying

When you look at some of these guys that talk
about development, he's the new defensive line pass rusher skills
specialists that they've brought in to work with with with
the team. And so oh even when you look at
you know, with uh with with the with Jayshawn Barham,
you know, even though they're moving him back to linebacker,
they like the way, they like his violence, they like
(20:09):
his come downhill, but they'll still kind of line him
up in the second second level and then walk them
to the line of scrimmage and probably has to develop
something because you just can't run into offensive linemen in
this league.

You just you won't do that. That that will that
won't work well for you.

Right if you're going to just run down the chest
of an offensive lineman in the National Football League, he'll
say thank you and invite it. His life will be
so much easier for him. So I think they're really
really really counting on these guys doing that so that
these these players can take that level of take that

step and really become and maybe the second half of
the year be more of a force than they will
be at the beginning of the year. And so people
didn't like that, so they only had one start to
come out of this one.

My initial I guess worry when I heard about uh
Melicott Lawrence was there were guys ranked higher on the board.
I guess for over all these all the draft pundits
or whatever. But we knew right away that was a
Christian Parker pick, and that was a guy he really wanted,
sending pictures to Will McClay, you know, throughout the weeks

or whatever that hey, this is a guy and we've
seen that kind of bite them in the past, where
they're picking who the coach wants. And I just hope
the scouts wanted him to you know what I mean, right,
And I'm I'm sure Will. It sounded like Will liked
him as well. But that at first for me was
a little bit of a red flag. You know, let's
or the coaches or the scouts really on the same

page with all this.

Talking to Will yesterday, It would it would it would
be assumed that they were, yeah, you know, he spoke
about it that, you know, having the conversation with all
the coaches of course Christian Parker, but all the position
coaches trying to figure out, all right, what is it
that you're looking for, you know, what are the trades
and you know what are the things that you what

of the things that fit well into this style of defense,
and can we match that with the player in the draft,
because a lot of it is, you know, you hear
the traits the long am or what are the ten
yards splits? Does he have to bend? The shin angle?
The size? All of that stuff are the traits they're
looking for. And from the conversation that I gathered, Kurt,
(22:20):
it seems as if Will and the coaches are in
lockstep with the players that they got.

Of course, like you said earlier, it's all about having
being versatile art. You know, all these guys seem to
have those trades.

Now the next step in this whole process is is And.

full on, I know, but I don't think they're worried
about the intellectual development or processing of Caleb Downs. No, right,

would be going out on a limb to say that

to have and and I couple that with the conversation
that today that happened Dee Winners, the linebacker that you
acquired via trade from San Francisco, and listening to de
Winters speak today, uh he it re asked a couple

of questions, one about being the green dot. And the
green dot for those that do not know, that is
the signal caller and the defense. He has a green
dot on his helmet. Play call comes from the sideline
to him. He then now echoes it out to the
rest of the team, and then it gets guys lined
up and so on and so forth. Well found out today,
Dee where does he ain't do a lot of that?

He didn't do a lot of that, pretty honest. He
didn't do a lot of even when Fred Warner went
down last year. The second thing that I found out
about what Dee Winners today was he ain't you're familiar
with the three four scheme either, So it is you're
now taking this mixture of a group of leftover players

from the ebra Flus era, free agent signing slash draft
picks from the current era Christian Parker, and people that
they brought in via trade lack of d Winners. Now,
the superpower that we've all heard from Christian Parker is

his ability to communicate, his ability to teach, his ability
to simplify things and make it all make sense. That
is going to be the biggest thing that I'm looking
for to seeing in OTAs in mini camp and training camp,
because this is going to be a new system for
Caleb Downs and the rest of the draft picks.

person is Will McLay. He joined my show yesterday. And
this draft, when you look at it, Kurt, there is
and everything that you look at the word, especially from
the defensive side. Versatility. Yes, they want versatile guys. They
want guys who to your point nate intelligence, who can

play multiple positions, can do multiple things on the field.
The new way of the NFL to have that motor.
But the biggest thing is that level of versatility. So, Kurt,
for you, how do you feel about the the Cowboys
did in this draft? They did they from what you
know from hearing from Christian Parker? Did they meet the
expectation player wise of what you think can help Christian

will not contribute in a major way. But I think
Malaki Lawrence, in all that he brings.

Is still he's got some development.

He has some development to do.

Do you think he means a reach.

I don't think he was a reach. I think he
was the right pick for what they needed.

for what they needed, giving them a pass rusher, that
someone that can come off the aize. They want the
speed that they want, and they're putting a lot of
trust in a couple of things. One that the belief
in Christian Parker is through the roof.

His ability to explain the game and teach the game
in such a way that it's able to be it's
able to be ingested and then regurgitated on the football field,
and and with with with speed, with force, with physicality.
The second thing I think that they're they're really relying
on is b T.

When you look at some of these guys that talk
about development, he's the new defensive line pass rusher skills
specialists that they've brought in to work with with with
the team. And so oh even when you look at
you know, with uh with with the with Jayshawn Barham,
you know, even though they're moving him back to linebacker,
they like the way, they like his violence, they like
(20:09):
his come downhill, but they'll still kind of line him
up in the second second level and then walk them
to the line of scrimmage and probably has to develop
something because you just can't run into offensive linemen in
this league.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
You just you won't do that. That that will that
won't work well for you.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Right if you're going to just run down the chest
of an offensive lineman in the National Football League, he'll
say thank you and invite it. His life will be
so much easier for him. So I think they're really
really really counting on these guys doing that so that
these these players can take that level of take that
(20:44):
step and really become and maybe the second half of
the year be more of a force than they will
be at the beginning of the year. And so people
didn't like that, so they only had one start to
come out of this one.

My initial I guess worry when I heard about uh
Melicott Lawrence was there were guys ranked higher on the board.
I guess for over all these all the draft pundits
or whatever. But we knew right away that was a
Christian Parker pick, and that was a guy he really wanted,
sending pictures to Will McClay, you know, throughout the weeks
(21:16):
or whatever that hey, this is a guy and we've
seen that kind of bite them in the past, where
they're picking who the coach wants. And I just hope
the scouts wanted him to you know what I mean, right,
And I'm I'm sure Will. It sounded like Will liked
him as well. But that at first for me was
a little bit of a red flag. You know, let's
or the coaches or the scouts really on the same
(21:37):
page with all this.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Talking to Will yesterday, It would it would it would
be assumed that they were, yeah, you know, he spoke
about it that, you know, having the conversation with all
the coaches of course Christian Parker, but all the position
coaches trying to figure out, all right, what is it
that you're looking for, you know, what are the trades
and you know what are the things that you what
(22:00):
of the things that fit well into this style of defense,
and can we match that with the player in the draft,
because a lot of it is, you know, you hear
the traits the long am or what are the ten
yards splits? Does he have to bend? The shin angle?
The size? All of that stuff are the traits they're
looking for. And from the conversation that I gathered, Kurt,
(22:20):
it seems as if Will and the coaches are in
lockstep with the players that they got.
Speaker 6 (22:29):
Of course, like you said earlier, it's all about having
being versatile art. You know, all these guys seem to
have those trades.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
Now the next step in this whole process is is And.

I don't think.

I don't want to be I don't want to go
full on, I know, but I don't think they're worried
about the intellectual development or processing of Caleb Downs. No, right,
I don't think that's I would. I don't think I
would be going out on a limb to say that

It's not playing by hisself, right, And so you have
to have and and I couple that with the conversation
that today that happened Dee Winners, the linebacker that you
acquired via trade from San Francisco, and listening to de
Winters speak today, uh he it re asked a couple

of questions, one about being the green dot. And the
green dot for those that do not know, that is
the signal caller and the defense. He has a green
dot on his helmet. Play call comes from the sideline
to him. He then now echoes it out to the
rest of the team, and then it gets guys lined
up and so on and so forth. Well found out today,
Dee where does he ain't do a lot of that?

He didn't do a lot of that, pretty honest. He
didn't do a lot of even when Fred Warner went
down last year. The second thing that I found out
about what Dee Winners today was he ain't you're familiar
with the three four scheme either, So it is you're
now taking this mixture of a group of leftover players

from the ebra Flus era, free agent signing slash draft
picks from the current era Christian Parker, and people that
they brought in via trade lack of d Winners. Now,
the superpower that we've all heard from Christian Parker is
(24:38):
his ability to communicate, his ability to teach, his ability
to simplify things and make it all make sense. That
is going to be the biggest thing that I'm looking
for to seeing in OTAs in mini camp and training camp,
because this is going to be a new system for
Caleb Downs and the rest of the draft picks.

Who's projected now probably to be your starting Mike linebacker,
your green Dot, your other free edge that you brought in,
Thompson and Locke, and the kid from Green Bay. I'm

run someone screaming down the middle of the field for
a wide up and touchdown or down the side line
of what have you?

I think it's more than that. I think it's and
these guys willing. We We've talked about it, and you know,
I beat this drum the whole way. Bring guys in
here that and you've said, I've said it. We've all
agreed that love football, that's gonna study football. This is
where when they say next week whatever, they haven't a

mini camp, Uh, the rookies in it's got to be
one hundred percent participation. The way they talking, it's multiple.
They ain't draft not one guy that can't play seven positions.
So if we hey man, we're missing eight guys? Are
we missing six guys? Are this guy take a veteran day?

This is this is not what I think Christian Parker
signed up for.

getting away from the guy who don't think team, who

We talked about it a lot of time. I wondered,
the brightish dudes. I had to practice. I had to

some understanding and that if we don't have that with
all these new people, you talked about it's gonna be
ugly coming for day one.

Well, I think that. I mean, we talked about it
for the preseason is really like the first four or
five six games, right, the guys aren't going to have it.
You know, nobody plays in the preseason. Now, how are
they going to be ready day one? With We've seen
it the last fourth defensive coordinator in four years. You've
seen it the last few years. Last year was really bad.
But I mean, it's going to take them somewhere. It's

going to be a ramp up period. Those first few
games could be a little shaky, hopefully.

Not, but you have to take a chance and play
some of these guys in the preseason because who is
not new.

I mean, you out of these.

Fifty sixty or seventy guys that are already here, forty
percent of them is new. And you're not gonna and
so what You're gonna go out and sign another forty
guys and say, hey, hey, go to preseason, we'll.

Give you even larger.

Normally, each side of the ball in the off season
turns about thirty three percent of the roster, right, fifty
six percent on the roster on the defensive side changed over.

That's what I'm saying.

I always had last year fifty six percent more than
half of the guys who you watched ugly watching or not.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
I told y'all will not be here. I told you,
so you have the fifty six percent of the roster
got changed over on defense.
