the father whoa Caleb Downs.

Well immediately you you, however impressed you are with Caleb
Downs and his personality is answering, his football ability, his recall,
his knowledge.

You talked to his dad for five.
Speaker 7 (02:43):
Minutes, and and and and like a good father and
a good husband. He gives all the credit to his
wife and to Caleb's mom. But you talked to his dad,
who was a former NFL player, played running back in
the league, was a coach. And you see where it
gets it from. Gary Downs is as bright, as sharp,

as charismatic as they come. And you know, he just
shared a bunch of different stories about Caleb from the
time that he was young, and.

He said, there is it. There isn't he said. One
of the he said he went to.

Uh one of the time they went to Nick to
Nick Saban's Alabama.

Camph He's still in high.

School and Uh, they were doing a drill and the nose,
the defensive lineman couldn't get it right, and the coaches
put Caleb in there and Caleb got it right. And
so there was like you put him anywhere, you put
him anywhere. His brother is Josh Downs, who plays slot
receiver for the Coat. He's a tar heel, and he

talked about it one time. You know, he was talking
to his you know, to his dad and said, you know,
I want to I want to get better at playing
slot receiver and his dad was like, well that's that.
Josh plays Slott like he's the better, and he was
like nah. All off season, Caleb worked on playing slot receiver.
Open up the next year in the high school football
game they're playing in the Georgia Dome. First player of
the game who scored the touchdown Caleb down from the

slot position. So he just was talking about just the
way that he is. You know, he started playing running back,
but then the coach you know, got into high school
and the running back was already there, had nineteen hundred
yards returning. They need him to go play safety. So
that's how he went to go and play safety. And
they's like, he can play him.

Safety free strong slot. He's played corner. So yeah.
Speaker 7 (04:29):
So he he was very, very very very charismatic man
and you can tell sharp, sharp dude. He was a
pre med major. He went to a horrible, horrible college.
Gary Downs did horrible college. Horrible university too, yeah, Ncy State.
Oh yeah, yeah, horrible, horrible.

Well, you know all that football stuff and that, you know,
that stuff's not important. What we really want to know
is what number is he going to wear?

So yeah, So in the conversation, of course, that came
up with Gary Downs and like Caleb, he was on
his game and he said, you know what, you guys
saw Caleb moving from thirteen, excuse me, from eighteen to thirteen.
And he said, they're working things some things out. They're
working some things out behind the scenes. There are some

moving pieces to potentially getting that number or not getting
that number. He said, Caleb is not trying to come
in and just take someone's number, but they're trying to
have conversations about it.

But just also two things that that Gary Down said
he said. One he said, he said Caleb's very frugal,
has always has been, probably always will be. He ain't
trying to just give up frivolous money for a number.
The second thing, and sometimes it's always mama knows best
and when mama wants, Mama gets he said Caleb downs Mom,

from a father's perspective on Caleb from he's telling stories
when Caleb was two years old about how one of
his friend's teammates came by the house, and he said
his teammate knocked on the door and they had a

side window by the door. He said, I don't know
why a two year old was answering the door, but
he said his friend looked in the side part of
the glass part of the door and he growled.

At Caleb, and he said, Caleb growled back.

At him, and he was like, man, I don't know
what his little two year old is, he said, but
I growled at him and he grout right back at me.
And so he just giving man stories from Pop Warner,
from high school, from college. I asked him what city
was best Chapel Hill because Josh Downs went to Chapel Hill,
and of course Caleb went to Ohio state. Which city
is better Chapel Hill of Columbus. He kind of gave
Chapel Hill a nod.

You know. He talked about the football program.
Speaker 7 (07:01):
We know that's different, but he said the city, He said,
Chapel Hill is a good, good, good college feeling city.
Speaker 8 (07:07):
Even though it's an in C state. Alumnia.

Yeah, he had get great things to say. He had
great He talked about the brotherhood and a lot of people.

Gary's brother in law, which is Caleb, and Josh's down's
uncle is former Tar Hill legend, NFL All Star, Pro Bowler,
All Pro j blid. So I mean they it's it's
I mean, Caleb doesn't this didn't happen by accident.

His dad talks about Caleb. His high school coach what
they would have a little high school meeting like during
the game, and they would go in the locker room
and get Caleb and have Caleb come back outside where
the coaches are at and say and the coaches would ask.

Him what should we do? What do you see?

And so like this is and that's like, this is
how Caleb. He talked about Jamal Anderson. I don't tell
the whole and if you got chill, but he talked
about Jamal Anderson, who was the running back when he
was in Atlanta. His dad, Gary Davids, was backup running
back in Atlanta. And their sons Anderson, Jamal Anderson and Gary,

Caleb and ja son they've played on the same you
football team. And so Caleb will go over to Jamal's
house and his sons like, let's go.

Outside and play. It's getting the pool. Da da dah.
He's like, nah, I want to watch film.

So he's like watching film as a youth. Like that's
what he was, That's what he was all about. So
what you're hear and see about Caleb Downs now is
not something that he just picked up yesterday from his

up and getting the guy they had they moved us

out here in the training camp. It's gonna be out
here in the mini camps. It's gonna be on the film,
watching the film. You know, if it is true to form.

You know, Darren Woodson, James Washington, all these guys watch film,
Troy when Emmett Smith, all these guys watch film.

They know what where you bring guys along, will will
guys do what they need to do. If you check
with most of the teams, at least the four teams
that leading up to the Super Bowl, one thing was
consistent was they had player participation. And this is what
the Cowboys have been lacking. It's player participation. Not walking

out on the field fifteen minutes late, not doing your
own thing, but gathering folks up and trying to get
the mental part of this game in because the most
healthiest team with the smartest players seem to win the
Super Bowls and that's just how it go.

And that's the question and and this is this is
the answer that I particularly don't have today. What everyone's
hope is is this is where the Christian Parker special
nests comes into play, is how can you deploy this
Swiss Army knife type player to make him impactful? Because

that that's the and this is why there was any
knock about premium players in the draft or premium positions
in the draft. The one that's not talked about and
the reason why a lot of times they don't go
in the top ten in the draft is because safety
isn't quite deemed a premium player, but because of the
(13:14):
umbrella of what they are with Christian Parker and how
the league has changed and how Caleb can play that.
You know, whether you want to say he's nickel nickel
slot or safety slot, or some people call it money
or starbacker, however you want to call that position where
he's playing down and he's covering tight and he's covering
running backs and he's covering receivers, or he's playing back.

He's playing you know, quarter of the field, half of
the field. That is that is the part that we're
all waiting for because traditionally you don't see and this
is why you look at even like Rookie of the Year,
a safety hasn't won a Rookie of the Year. I
think it was like in the last century or so

like it just this doesn't happen, you know what I'm saying,
because they're just so far away from the ball and
they have to have a lot of other things that
have to transpire because I could just not go that way.
Unlike a linebacker or defensive end who is near the
ball consistently into action, tackles for losses, you know, tip

passes and interceptions, sacks. Same thing with defensive ends. They
are always going around the corner. They go get it,
you know, they go get a rookie, go get a
ten sack, twelve fifteen sacked rookie season, You're probably gonna
win defensive Rookie of the year.

And you're not considered a coverage guy right.
Speaker 7 (14:31):
Right, And then like even the outside, when you're playing corner,
you know there's opportunities there for you to kind of
get four to five interceptions and now kind of put
your name in that. But safety sometimes it can be
one of those floating situations.

Where you more importantly.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
The league has made it that way when we got
a Durham James, or you got the kid that played
with the great hair with Yeah, you got a Reed,
the guy that passed swear with the Washington Redskins year
as well. It's been guys that have had these abilities,
but I hate to say this, but coaches lack the

creativity to see if.

They got that. It's a bunch of smart safeties out
there that can do a bunch of things. But you
got your on the line safety, you got your back nock.

The new NFL requires that this guy that the Cowboys draft,
it's gonna be more and more of these guys because
Jesse already alluded to it and it's in full effect.
Is the tight ends. Ye, the NFL is changing. If
you don't think a safety is uh and it's gonna
be kind of come out funny. If you don't think

of safety is important, do what the Cowboys did last.

but he will tackle you and bring you to the

that come through it in this building. I got my
respect from players because they thought it was, oh, it's
a gimmick guy coming off the show. I showed up
every single day and I went one hundred miles an hour,

you when you if you're asked to do a job,
you do it.

Now. Respect and leadership two completely different things. They didn't
want me to be their leader. They didn't want me.

the father whoa Caleb Downs.

All right and please tell.

Well immediately you you, however impressed you are with Caleb
Downs and his personality is answering, his football ability, his recall,
his knowledge.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
You talked to his dad for five.
Speaker 7 (02:43):
Minutes, and and and and like a good father and
a good husband. He gives all the credit to his
wife and to Caleb's mom. But you talked to his dad,
who was a former NFL player, played running back in
the league, was a coach. And you see where it
gets it from. Gary Downs is as bright, as sharp,

as charismatic as they come. And you know, he just
shared a bunch of different stories about Caleb from the
time that he was young, and.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
He said, there is it. There isn't he said. One
of the he said he went to.
Speaker 7 (03:18):
Uh one of the time they went to Nick to
Nick Saban's Alabama.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Camph He's still in high.
Speaker 7 (03:24):
School and Uh, they were doing a drill and the nose,
the defensive lineman couldn't get it right, and the coaches
put Caleb in there and Caleb got it right. And
so there was like you put him anywhere, you put
him anywhere. His brother is Josh Downs, who plays slot
receiver for the Coat. He's a tar heel, and he

talked about it one time. You know, he was talking
to his you know, to his dad and said, you know,
I want to I want to get better at playing
slot receiver and his dad was like, well that's that.
Josh plays Slott like he's the better, and he was
like nah. All off season, Caleb worked on playing slot receiver.
Open up the next year in the high school football
game they're playing in the Georgia Dome. First player of
the game who scored the touchdown Caleb down from the

slot position. So he just was talking about just the
way that he is. You know, he started playing running back,
but then the coach you know, got into high school
and the running back was already there, had nineteen hundred
yards returning. They need him to go play safety. So
that's how he went to go and play safety. And
they's like, he can play him.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Safety free strong slot. He's played corner. So yeah.
Speaker 7 (04:29):
So he he was very, very very very charismatic man
and you can tell sharp, sharp dude. He was a
pre med major. He went to a horrible, horrible college.
Gary Downs did horrible college. Horrible university too, yeah, Ncy State.
Oh yeah, yeah, horrible, horrible.
Speaker 6 (04:46):
Well, you know all that football stuff and that, you know,
that stuff's not important. What we really want to know
is what number is he going to wear?
Speaker 8 (04:52):
Yeah?

So yeah, So in the conversation, of course, that came
up with Gary Downs and like Caleb, he was on
his game and he said, you know what, you guys
saw Caleb moving from thirteen, excuse me, from eighteen to thirteen.
And he said, they're working things some things out. They're
working some things out behind the scenes. There are some

moving pieces to potentially getting that number or not getting
that number. He said, Caleb is not trying to come
in and just take someone's number, but they're trying to
have conversations about it.

Yeah, and how much.
Speaker 7 (05:28):
But just also two things that that Gary Down said
he said. One he said, he said Caleb's very frugal,
has always has been, probably always will be. He ain't
trying to just give up frivolous money for a number.
The second thing, and sometimes it's always mama knows best
and when mama wants, Mama gets he said Caleb downs Mom,

Gary Down's wife, he said, she wants him in number two.

She's real big on wanting him in number two.

He answered all the questions that we asked. They were
insightful and you get a chance to see the inside
from a father's perspective on Caleb from he's telling stories
when Caleb was two years old about how one of
his friend's teammates came by the house, and he said
his teammate knocked on the door and they had a

side window by the door. He said, I don't know
why a two year old was answering the door, but
he said his friend looked in the side part of
the glass part of the door and he growled.

At Caleb, and he said, Caleb growled back.
Speaker 7 (06:39):
At him, and he was like, man, I don't know
what his little two year old is, he said, but
I growled at him and he grout right back at me.
And so he just giving man stories from Pop Warner,
from high school, from college. I asked him what city
was best Chapel Hill because Josh Downs went to Chapel Hill,
and of course Caleb went to Ohio state. Which city
is better Chapel Hill of Columbus. He kind of gave
Chapel Hill a nod.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
You know. He talked about the football program.
Speaker 7 (07:01):
We know that's different, but he said the city, He said,
Chapel Hill is a good, good, good college feeling city.
Speaker 8 (07:07):
Even though it's an in C state. Alumnia.
Speaker 7 (07:09):
Yeah, he had get great things to say. He had
great He talked about the brotherhood and a lot of people.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
If you don't know.

Gary's brother in law, which is Caleb, and Josh's down's
uncle is former Tar Hill legend, NFL All Star, Pro Bowler,
All Pro j blid. So I mean they it's it's
I mean, Caleb doesn't this didn't happen by accident.

He's a football dude.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
He's a football dude. I mean.
Speaker 7 (07:39):
His dad talks about Caleb. His high school coach what
they would have a little high school meeting like during
the game, and they would go in the locker room
and get Caleb and have Caleb come back outside where
the coaches are at and say and the coaches would ask.

Him what should we do? What do you see?
Speaker 6 (07:52):
Wow?

And so like this is and that's like, this is
how Caleb. He talked about Jamal Anderson. I don't tell
the whole and if you got chill, but he talked
about Jamal Anderson, who was the running back when he
was in Atlanta. His dad, Gary Davids, was backup running
back in Atlanta. And their sons Anderson, Jamal Anderson and Gary,

Caleb and ja son they've played on the same you
football team. And so Caleb will go over to Jamal's
house and his sons like, let's go.

Outside and play. It's getting the pool. Da da dah.
He's like, nah, I want to watch film.

So he's like watching film as a youth. Like that's
what he was, That's what he was all about. So
what you're hear and see about Caleb Downs now is
not something that he just picked up yesterday from his

So Caleb, if you're listening and we know you are
from a former merchandise guy, go ahead and stay in
the number you're in now, play for a year or two.
Then go get your number two and save your money,

up and getting the guy they had they moved us
all the way up to sixteen. So are we we
not we, but we the collective we outside this room?

Are we just super excited? And this is still just

out here in the training camp. It's gonna be out
here in the mini camps. It's gonna be on the film,
watching the film. You know, if it is true to form.

You know, Darren Woodson, James Washington, all these guys watch film,
Troy when Emmett Smith, all these guys watch film.

They know what where you bring guys along, will will
guys do what they need to do. If you check
with most of the teams, at least the four teams
that leading up to the Super Bowl, one thing was
consistent was they had player participation. And this is what
the Cowboys have been lacking. It's player participation. Not walking

out on the field fifteen minutes late, not doing your
own thing, but gathering folks up and trying to get
the mental part of this game in because the most
healthiest team with the smartest players seem to win the
Super Bowls and that's just how it go.

Micah as a rookie came in and he made an impact,

As talented as Caleb downs Is, can he make an
impact as a safety?

And that's the question and and this is this is
the answer that I particularly don't have today. What everyone's
hope is is this is where the Christian Parker special
nests comes into play, is how can you deploy this
Swiss Army knife type player to make him impactful? Because

that that's the and this is why there was any
knock about premium players in the draft or premium positions
in the draft. The one that's not talked about and
the reason why a lot of times they don't go
in the top ten in the draft is because safety
isn't quite deemed a premium player, but because of the
(13:14):
umbrella of what they are with Christian Parker and how
the league has changed and how Caleb can play that.
You know, whether you want to say he's nickel nickel
slot or safety slot, or some people call it money
or starbacker, however you want to call that position where
he's playing down and he's covering tight and he's covering
running backs and he's covering receivers, or he's playing back.
(13:34):
He's playing you know, quarter of the field, half of
the field. That is that is the part that we're
all waiting for because traditionally you don't see and this
is why you look at even like Rookie of the Year,
a safety hasn't won a Rookie of the Year. I
think it was like in the last century or so
(13:55):
like it just this doesn't happen, you know what I'm saying,
because they're just so far away from the ball and
they have to have a lot of other things that
have to transpire because I could just not go that way.
Unlike a linebacker or defensive end who is near the
ball consistently into action, tackles for losses, you know, tip
(14:16):
passes and interceptions, sacks. Same thing with defensive ends. They
are always going around the corner. They go get it,
you know, they go get a rookie, go get a
ten sack, twelve fifteen sacked rookie season, You're probably gonna
win defensive Rookie of the year.
Speaker 6 (14:29):
And you're not considered a coverage guy right.
Speaker 7 (14:31):
Right, And then like even the outside, when you're playing corner,
you know there's opportunities there for you to kind of
get four to five interceptions and now kind of put
your name in that. But safety sometimes it can be
one of those floating situations.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Where you more importantly.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
The league has made it that way when we got
a Durham James, or you got the kid that played
with the great hair with Yeah, you got a Reed,
the guy that passed swear with the Washington Redskins year
as well. It's been guys that have had these abilities,
but I hate to say this, but coaches lack the

creativity to see if.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
They got that. It's a bunch of smart safeties out
there that can do a bunch of things. But you
got your on the line safety, you got your back nock.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
The new NFL requires that this guy that the Cowboys draft,
it's gonna be more and more of these guys because
Jesse already alluded to it and it's in full effect.
Is the tight ends. Ye, the NFL is changing. If
you don't think a safety is uh and it's gonna
be kind of come out funny. If you don't think

of safety is important, do what the Cowboys did last.

Year several years.

Yeah, yeah, just do it the.

Cow However, he's on the line, Well, what if you
get caught on the tight end? What if there's on
the line safety to get caught on the tight end?
Now you're looking for a during James, are you looking
for uh the kid ed Reed?

We're looking for the Kyle Hamlets of the world that

You know they are there, You know they are there.

But will the coaches, defensive secondary coaches go out and say,
this is the type of guy. He ain't a big hitter,
but he will tackle you and bring you to the
ground once you get once you catch the ball, he
can make a play good enough to break that up
or get an interception.

They are there, but do the NFL.

I want to spend the time with the coaches and
the players to get them here, not only here, but
around the league. You're gonna see more of these guys
come into a fact, especially with these tight ends that
coming into the league.

So Lewis Reddick has a great quote when it comes
to like this trade stuff, and Lewis Reddick said, you
don't win the trade until you win with the trade.

That's good, right, you don't win the trade until you
win with the trade. Right. That was seven nine and
one last year.

I don't know if that looks different if MIKEA is
here or not, but I mean there are some things
that happened in that trade. I don't you can people
will try to try to throw Quentin Williams into that
situation in scenario, but it's completely separate from that.

Kenny Clark, But you don't think that they used that
draft pick to go get Williams.

So their draft picked to go get Williams.

Well, they had to play with them, right, I mean
they didn't they use the one of the green Bay
picks they got from Green Bay to go get Quentin Williams.

They use Yeah, So next year it's one Okay, there's
two picks next year. The highest pick of the two
is going to go to the Jets. So they probably
woudn't have did that trade.

that come through it in this building. I got my
respect from players because they thought it was, oh, it's
a gimmick guy coming off the show. I showed up
every single day and I went one hundred miles an hour,
and it was like, wait a second, and you just
you when you if you're asked to do a job,
you do it.

Now. Respect and leadership two completely different things. They didn't
want me to be their leader. They didn't want me.
