don't know if you remember it, and he took a
picture with the family, and I took a picture and

phone call. It was like, did you see that picture
on ESPN? And I was like, oh my god, I'm fired.
I've been doing this for two months and I am fired.
I did something I wasn't supposed to do, and it

thing ever. He goes, I don't think you know this,

but the family used to sit around and they would
eat cereal and they would watch Pee Wee's Playhouse to
all the kids, and that was their favorite show. So
when he showed up at you know, he got him

the street and he's at training camp, and Jerry Junior

twenty third and one of those first round picks the
Cowboys have more specifically twenty because they've had they're talking

Receiver from Indiana thirty visit they've talked to some other
wide receivers.

what is your ideal scenario, Kurt? Since you have the

Draft magazine and you're up to speed on all things draft,
would you stay put? Would you go up? A lot
of talk about them trading with Kansas City or Cleveland
and going up and getting like a real difference maker
that you you know, it's all it's hit or miss.
But the further you go up the more the better

your odds are that you're going to get a real
solid playmaker, right, or would you consider possibly you know,
there's talk of maybe love falls to you and somebody
wants to really move up really bad and you get
a lot of collateral for it, Like what would be
your ideal scenario?

I don't want them if they move up, I don't
want to go up very far, just because I don't
want to give up both round picks. You know, that
just seems like a lot. Plus you might have to
give up even another pick after that, and so I mean,
you better be real sure a guy is a star
are going to do that?

If you could go up, who would you go up
and get? Well?

I mean a couple of other higher state kids, you know,
they're all downs or sunny styles, Caleb Down and r
bel Reese. I don't know if you can get up
Reecee would be too costly correct styles maybe Downs maybe,
but still that's you just need so much. If you
or if you're going in with one, you know, third

round pick on day two. Now, I just think that
puts them in trouble. I wouldn't depending who's there on
the board. I have no problem with going back like now,
I don't want to drop out of the first or
you know, drop a bunch of slots of Man, if
you could pick up move back a little bit, pick
up a second round or something like that, man, I'm
all for that.

More dry deal scenario be what what would you say
this would be perfect?

Well, there's there's one option that Joseph Hoyd from Dallas
Morning News, which you're well acquainted with. Yeah, he had
an option that was like you'd get number six and
number thirty nine for number twelve and twenty. That's a
little steep. Maybe you're losing both those, but that would
be that would interest You would trade with Cleveland Cleveland, Yeah, yeah,

And then that you had mentioned.

So you'd move up to six, Yeah, and you keep
two first rounders. You would just swap them. Is that
how that would work?
Speaker 4 (21:06):
No, you would, you would you would give your two
first rounders to move up to six, gotcha, and then
you would get their thirty.

Nine second round And then he had another one it
was the twelfth overall in the third round pick you'd
give that up for pick number nine.

So who's he got them taken? If they go to
six or nine, he.

up to six and taking downs or the laining whoever's
sitting there.

drop back some and still pick up similar talent.

that they've called them the big six or whatever it
would have you like outside of those top name those
six names that you might hear, you know, that's the
RVL reach, the sunny styles, the Caleb Love excuse me,
Caleep downs, Jeremiah Love, I'm blanking on the other, the

other the other one. Outside of that everything else, like
some people will have like you know, I got eleven
or twelve first round grades for the first round and
he's saying like, this is a bad draft to have
multiple first round of course, but it's a great draft
if you have multiple second and third round picks, like
the value picks. There's much more guys, so you can

get at value in the second and third round, the
fourth round than you can in the first round.

Of course, because that's the opposite, right, Yeah, yeah, so.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
It's like and so that's why I think some of
it is, you know, maybe keeping twelve and then that
twentieth pick, maybe something when they trade back, maybe try
to get you know, a couple more picks on Day two.
But for me, and I'm not the draft guru, I
do enough and watch enough and I read enough to
be competent to have the conversation with the big dogs

who do this on a daily There's nobody, I feel
outside of Reese, Rvil Reese worth giving up assets to
move up and get in the in the draft. And
you would have to go all the way up, because
I mean everybody is already pretty much Fernando Mendoz the

number one overall going to the Vegas Raiders, but not
many people have all Reese coming off that number two
overall pick. So you'd have to go all the way
up to two to get a guy like that. Now
there you have some that talk about there is going
to be a run on offensive line. When I say
a run, it's gonna be like maybe two offensive line
picked in a row. That then can push one of
these guys like Caleb Downs or Ruben Bain who depending
(24:07):
on who you're picking, where you're picking, some people still
have the measurement kind of obia phobia with the thirty
eighths arms right, he doesn't have the Tonald t Rex
arms and some may say, can't do it, can't do
it top ten with a guy who doesn't have the
measurements that meets our standards, so he may fall. The
other one is, you know, I heard Peter Scheger talk
(24:31):
about it like you know, we talked about like guys
like Derwin James and Kyle Hamilton. These guys were supposed
to be top ten picks, but people don't feel like
safety is always that up premium pick right a top
ten pick. So again you might see guys get picked.
You might see a guy of Cam Downs get picked
over because people just don't feel like a safety is

a premium top ten position. Caleb Downs maybe can fall

defensive end, rush edge, whatever, whatever it is, the you know,
playing the four eye here and in the Christians Parker's defense.
So there's been a bunch of scenarios. I personally just
don't feel like I feel you stay pat at twelve
if if something comes falls to you, you nab it.
If you feel like there's something that you can kind of,
you know, move back with when you get to twelve
and do it. But you just need so much to

give up assets to move up to get a guy,
because even if you get the guy, I don't know
if you have enough help currently will that guy be
able to do all it is that you need him
to do for you? And that's you know that in
that high of a level. So I stay put. I
stay put at twelve or move back, I don't know about.

And even even if you move up, it's still a crapshoot, right,
it's still fifty to fifty, you know, even sure things
are fifty to fifty. So it's like, why give it

But what would you rather be sitting here next? You're saying, well,
we moved around and got a lot of players. Are
we saying, hey man, we got some players and they
impacted the team. Because I don't think we have two

or three players that's good enough right now to take
us anywhere. Even if we stay packed right now, we
ain't going nowhere. We need players, not nineteen players, but
two or three players, and we can at least be
in the playoffs. That's just what I believe. We two
or three players away. That's just what I believe from

being in the playoffs. That's what I believe. Don't go
out and get twenty five and we still talk in
the same game. Go out and get those two or
three guys is there.

second first round for a legit defensive player.

Could you trade that second round er for like, hey,

maybe he's on his second contract and you want to

solid four or five year career left on him, or
is that too steep of a price.

Cowboys currently sit in a situation where the team building
aspect of is is so bad and why you have
so many needs because normally, normally you want to be
able to solidly pencil in your first round picks of
being day one starters, major contributors. Your second round picks

are guys who are day one starters, major contributors, but
they're also supposed to be here through that first contract
and really be players, right and so now it gives
you room for player development, for growth and all that
kind of stuff that you can add small pieces to
the mix to help both to your you know, your
your overall roster, and then you're looking at your third

or fourth or fifth round picks, those like, if we
can find if we can find a rotational guy out
of those guys, special team guy out of those guys,
this is how you round about your roster. And then
anything past that six seven undrafted free agent guys, those
are those they're the true gamblers right there. If I
can find it, if I get one at a at
a round six seven and undrafted free agent, if I

could bring guys in to help develop time, if I
can get it if I can find a special teams
guy out of those mixed Now I'm cooking. But when
it's gotten the Cowboys in such major dodo when it
comes to roster building and having so many holes, is
(38:38):
what you're getting ready to read is that the second
round draft picks that they've had, how that has impacted
this team's ability to properly build a team, uh the
long way right, and having guys being here to second
contracts and so on and so forth, so that you
don't have so many needs. And so you can read
(38:59):
that all the first up as we know what those are, right,
and there's something there we're like, but it's these second
round and it's been historically baff with the Cowboys.

moved over to Valley Ranch, and I went down to
training camp. You were there. You were at training camp,
and nobody knew what the hell they were doing on
social media. We were one of the first teams to
have a full time person do it. Nobody was and

I thought, you know, the cool, like we were trendsetters.
We were actually tweeting out photos of things happening at
training camp, and nobody knew anything about it, you know,
especially the family. They had no idea what social media
was and I barely did. And I was running the
department and I'm eating lunch one day. I don't remember
who I was with or where I was at, but

my picture pee wee Herman was at training camp. I
don't know if you remember it, and he took a
picture with the family, and I took a picture and
I tweeted it out. Well, it winds up on ESPN,
and like right after it winds up on ESPN, I
think Derek got a call or somebody. This one, I

was still sitting in the marketing department. Somebody got a
phone call. It was like, did you see that picture
on ESPN? And I was like, oh my god, I'm fired.
I've been doing this for two months and I am fired.
I did something I wasn't supposed to do, and it
was Jerry Junior and he was like, that's the greatest
thing ever. He goes, I don't think you know this,

but the family used to sit around and they would
eat cereal and they would watch Pee Wee's Playhouse to
all the kids, and that was their favorite show. So
when he showed up at you know, he got him
out of the basement of the Alamo. He walks down
the street and he's at training camp, and Jerry Junior
thought that was the And that was the first time
I think that anyone knew we even had a social

media department because they wound up on ESPN. But I
was so afraid that I got fired like two months
into the job. So that's my peep Harmon story. Kurt,
we talked a lot without you last week. We got
kind of stuck on George Pickens.

We talk a lot, honestly, We've been honest. We talk
a lot when Kurt's present.

I think we all want him to be a part
of the team now long term, sure, don't go do this,
but because he's not, let's got the conversation.

behind it. I think last year is set a precedent
of the fact that we are no because nobody has
ever did that, Like, no one has ever seen there
in their prime, their franchise player. They got traded, one
of the top two or three players in the league
at that position get traded. That's unheard him.

We saw it, but it was just in a different sport,
the same city, same city, difference six months before.

And so it's up happening now is it's like the
it's like whoever whoever breaks the mold first, and now
all of a sudden it doesn't become this big shocking
thing that no one has ever seen before, and that
you can't do that, you can't do it. And so
that now that they've already done it, in the back
of my mind, I'm like, well, who say they can't
do it again?

It and it kind of worked out, kind of like
it wasn't a disaster.

It was like for who it worked out who seven
nine one wouldn't say it worked out well.

got rid of him and then you got nothing in return.
You got Quinn Williams, right, you gotta you gotta.

It wasn't the guy you got rid of, but it
wasn't like we're just getting rid of him to get
rid of him and we got turn picks, right.

Yeah, So you just never know how things may turn
behind the scenes. Because of as of last week we
talked about it, they still hadn't talked negotiations. They still
hadn't talked.

So Cowboys tell him, you were not letting you in
camp until you sign.

Yes, technically they can tell them whatever they want to
tell them, but their thing is that we want you here,
we want you here. But I don't know, man, this
is one of those things where they're like, we need
to see more. Were not confident. We don't want to have,
you know, two forty million dollar receivers, thirty something million

dollar receivers, whatever it is out there now, it's it's
gonna be an interesting take and it'll get even more interesting.
It'll get extremely interesting if when we get to April
twenty third and one of those first round picks the
Cowboys have more specifically twenty because they've had they're talking

to which I think was like weird. But Omar Cooper Jr.
Receiver from Indiana thirty visit they've talked to some other
wide receivers.

He was the only offensive player they brought in, right.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
So far brought off. So you know, like you think, well,
we got CD, we got George are you talking to that?
We got Ryan Filloyd? Why we why are we inviting them?
Why are we taking We only get thirty of them
in the spot right as much as we need elsewhere.
We got thirty of these things, and.

You would think they're at least thinking this deal. He
may not in the event right right, because you also say, well,
their job is also to put together for the future,
and if that means Omar Cooper Junior. I'm not saying
that they will, but I'm just saying at twenty it
can get very interesting that they go offensive player because
of where the draft falls of them.

draft stuff. A lot of talk about the Cowboys moving around,
packaging stuff, going up, possibly going back. What is your
what is your ideal scenario, Kurt? Since you have the

Draft magazine and you're up to speed on all things draft,
would you stay put? Would you go up? A lot
of talk about them trading with Kansas City or Cleveland
and going up and getting like a real difference maker
that you you know, it's all it's hit or miss.
But the further you go up the more the better
(19:18):
your odds are that you're going to get a real
solid playmaker, right, or would you consider possibly you know,
there's talk of maybe love falls to you and somebody
wants to really move up really bad and you get
a lot of collateral for it, Like what would be
your ideal scenario?
Speaker 7 (19:35):
I don't want them if they move up, I don't
want to go up very far, just because I don't
want to give up both round picks. You know, that
just seems like a lot. Plus you might have to
give up even another pick after that, and so I mean,
you better be real sure a guy is a star
are going to do that?
Speaker 2 (19:52):
If you could go up, who would you go up
and get? Well?
Speaker 7 (19:54):
I mean a couple of other higher state kids, you know,
they're all downs or sunny styles, Caleb Down and r
bel Reese. I don't know if you can get up
Reecee would be too costly correct styles maybe Downs maybe,
but still that's you just need so much. If you
or if you're going in with one, you know, third
(20:14):
round pick on day two. Now, I just think that
puts them in trouble. I wouldn't depending who's there on
the board. I have no problem with going back like now,
I don't want to drop out of the first or
you know, drop a bunch of slots of Man, if
you could pick up move back a little bit, pick
up a second round or something like that, man, I'm
all for that.

More dry deal scenario be what what would you say
this would be perfect?
Speaker 7 (20:36):
Well, there's there's one option that Joseph Hoyd from Dallas
Morning News, which you're well acquainted with. Yeah, he had
an option that was like you'd get number six and
number thirty nine for number twelve and twenty. That's a
little steep. Maybe you're losing both those, but that would
be that would interest You would trade with Cleveland Cleveland, Yeah, yeah,
(20:58):
And then that you had mentioned.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
So you'd move up to six, Yeah, and you keep
two first rounders. You would just swap them. Is that
how that would work?
Speaker 4 (21:06):
No, you would, you would you would give your two
first rounders to move up to six, gotcha, and then
you would get their thirty.
Speaker 7 (21:11):
Nine second round And then he had another one it
was the twelfth overall in the third round pick you'd
give that up for pick number nine.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
So who's he got them taken? If they go to
six or nine, he.
Speaker 7 (21:26):
Has them taken styles with that first one if figures
up to six and taking downs or the laining whoever's
sitting there.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
With the second one?
Speaker 1 (21:36):
Okay, what right now? They got it first, they got
two first, what having a second? Nothing having the third.
Speaker 7 (21:45):
Late third ninety two tonty two. So not having that
and they say that you got you correct me. But
like the difference between twelve and you know, second round,
there isn't a huge huge difference, so you could probably
drop back some and still pick up similar talent.
Speaker 4 (22:06):
Yeah, a lot of people have said in this draft
that they've called them the big six or whatever it
would have you like outside of those top name those
six names that you might hear, you know, that's the
RVL reach, the sunny styles, the Caleb Love excuse me,
Caleep downs, Jeremiah Love, I'm blanking on the other, the
(22:28):
other the other one. Outside of that everything else, like
some people will have like you know, I got eleven
or twelve first round grades for the first round and
he's saying like, this is a bad draft to have
multiple first round of course, but it's a great draft
if you have multiple second and third round picks, like
the value picks. There's much more guys, so you can
(22:50):
get at value in the second and third round, the
fourth round than you can in the first round.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
Of course, because that's the opposite, right, Yeah, yeah, so.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
It's like and so that's why I think some of
it is, you know, maybe keeping twelve and then that
twentieth pick, maybe something when they trade back, maybe try
to get you know, a couple more picks on Day two.
But for me, and I'm not the draft guru, I
do enough and watch enough and I read enough to
be competent to have the conversation with the big dogs
(23:21):
who do this on a daily There's nobody, I feel
outside of Reese, Rvil Reese worth giving up assets to
move up and get in the in the draft. And
you would have to go all the way up, because
I mean everybody is already pretty much Fernando Mendoz the
(23:43):
number one overall going to the Vegas Raiders, but not
many people have all Reese coming off that number two
overall pick. So you'd have to go all the way
up to two to get a guy like that. Now
there you have some that talk about there is going
to be a run on offensive line. When I say
a run, it's gonna be like maybe two offensive line
picked in a row. That then can push one of
these guys like Caleb Downs or Ruben Bain who depending
(24:07):
on who you're picking, where you're picking, some people still
have the measurement kind of obia phobia with the thirty
eighths arms right, he doesn't have the Tonald t Rex
arms and some may say, can't do it, can't do
it top ten with a guy who doesn't have the
measurements that meets our standards, so he may fall. The
other one is, you know, I heard Peter Scheger talk
(24:31):
about it like you know, we talked about like guys
like Derwin James and Kyle Hamilton. These guys were supposed
to be top ten picks, but people don't feel like
safety is always that up premium pick right a top
ten pick. So again you might see guys get picked.
You might see a guy of Cam Downs get picked
over because people just don't feel like a safety is
(24:53):
a premium top ten position. Caleb Downs maybe can fall
to you, Ruben Bain, maybe can fall to you if
Jeremiah Love falls to you. I'm out on a running back.

You trade back, I'm out if you could, I don't,
I don't. That's the only pick that we have. A
lot of people also talk about it was a name
that was hot and kind of tailed off a little
bit but starting to pick some steam up again. Is

defensive end edge, whatever you want to call him now,

defensive end, rush edge, whatever, whatever it is, the you know,
playing the four eye here and in the Christians Parker's defense.
So there's been a bunch of scenarios. I personally just
don't feel like I feel you stay pat at twelve
if if something comes falls to you, you nab it.
If you feel like there's something that you can kind of,
you know, move back with when you get to twelve
and do it. But you just need so much to

give up assets to move up to get a guy,
because even if you get the guy, I don't know
if you have enough help currently will that guy be
able to do all it is that you need him
to do for you? And that's you know that in
that high of a level. So I stay put. I
stay put at twelve or move back, I don't know about.

And even even if you move up, it's still a crapshoot, right,
it's still fifty to fifty, you know, even sure things
are fifty to fifty. So it's like, why give it
up if it's the same. How do you feel about

is our guy. Then we just pass on him because
we want to look fancy me get these multiple picks

just signed Williams to multi year deal.

doubting on the second rounders, you think you're just gonna

come to twelve and they can play get this guy.

But what would you rather be sitting here next? You're saying, well,
we moved around and got a lot of players. Are
we saying, hey man, we got some players and they
impacted the team. Because I don't think we have two

or three players that's good enough right now to take
us anywhere. Even if we stay packed right now, we
ain't going nowhere. We need players, not nineteen players, but
two or three players, and we can at least be
in the playoffs. That's just what I believe. We two
or three players away. That's just what I believe from

being in the playoffs. That's what I believe. Don't go
out and get twenty five and we still talk in
the same game. Go out and get those two or
three guys is there.

Do you think in today's NFL anybody would take your
second first round for a legit defensive player.

Could you trade that second round er for like, hey,
you got a great cornerbacker, you got an all star safety,
or you got maybe he's toward the end of his contract,
maybe he's on his second contract and you want to
move some money around when somebody negotiate with you for
a first round for a proven player that's got a
solid four or five year career left on him, or
is that too steep of a price.

I would think they would somebody's going to listen to

Is that something nobody does, because to me, it'd be like.

Yeah, if you start trading picks, I think you pick
some players usually kind of go like, well, give me

next year.

It's usually not straight up, right, I'm going to give

going to be great, and then use that second one
for somebody you know.

long term starter for you, and here's where they picked

And so here's the thing, and this is why the
Cowboys currently sit in a situation where the team building
aspect of is is so bad and why you have
so many needs because normally, normally you want to be
able to solidly pencil in your first round picks of
being day one starters, major contributors. Your second round picks

are guys who are day one starters, major contributors, but
they're also supposed to be here through that first contract
and really be players, right and so now it gives
you room for player development, for growth and all that
kind of stuff that you can add small pieces to
the mix to help both to your you know, your
your overall roster, and then you're looking at your third
(37:53):
or fourth or fifth round picks, those like, if we
can find if we can find a rotational guy out
of those guys, special team guy out of those guys,
this is how you round about your roster. And then
anything past that six seven undrafted free agent guys, those
are those they're the true gamblers right there. If I
can find it, if I get one at a at
a round six seven and undrafted free agent, if I

could bring guys in to help develop time, if I
can get it if I can find a special teams
guy out of those mixed Now I'm cooking. But when
it's gotten the Cowboys in such major dodo when it
comes to roster building and having so many holes, is
(38:38):
what you're getting ready to read is that the second
round draft picks that they've had, how that has impacted
this team's ability to properly build a team, uh the
long way right, and having guys being here to second
contracts and so on and so forth, so that you
don't have so many needs. And so you can read
(38:59):
that all the first up as we know what those are, right,
and there's something there we're like, but it's these second
round and it's been historically baff with the Cowboys.

years with these guys, right, I got four to six years,
and then I because you're thinking about I got four
to six years. There I go get another guy here
if and all of these guys, most of them, not
all of them, but most of them has fizzled out
for the Cowboys.

There's no overlap. There's none of these guys that have
been here. There's none of the guys you've been able
to really build off of, you know. And they all
may have had a season or a season.

Other than that, there has been And that's and that's
your roster building right there. That's the top part of
your roster, the heavy part of your roster where I
need these guys to be major contributors. I can't hope
that these guys become major contributors. Now I get you
in the first and second round. You gotta be a
player for me and a player for me for a while.
