And I've told this a thousand times where it originated
with coach Johnson, all of this right here. It didn't
have OTA's it would show up. It's just called workouts.
Some workouts like the summer workouts they have. What they
would do is just say, okay, on this day right here,
we're gonna all meet as a team. We was already
there working out five days a week when we want

to make about one hundred and seventy five dollars a
week for doing this. Were gonna pay you were gonna
pay you one hundred a week, and everybody better be there.
It wasn't voluntary, wasn't nothing. Yeah, you be there, and
so on this day we'll all meet as a team.

So did you did you like dread it?

Because yes I did, And I was so far out
of shape that time of year, so fart of shape,
I was like, whoa did you enjoy it?

Is it kind of like going back to school? Like
you didn't really want to go to school, but you
were excited to see like your buddies and hang out again.
And kind of is it that mentality? Like man, I
don't want to go, but kind.

I mean because oh blue collar Jesse, Oh no, it's
not because of that, Because I mean, I guess traveling
is more prevalent now and there's more stuff like you

couple of trips you're bored, like because the one thing
that you always get in the locker room is like

minded people in the sense of like they come from the.

Same tribe as you. Right, Like, like.

When you're playing and you go out to dinner, you
don't have to pick up the tab every time because
there's a dude sitting across from you when you with
your teammates that make as much or more money than you.
So you might have it this time, they got it
next time. When you're in the off season and you're
dealing with your regular friends, you gotta pay for everything.

You go on vacation with your lady or with your boys,
they're looking for you to pay for everything. And so
after you know.

A lot of t Rexes out there, aren't there.

Man, When that bill come, everybody almays, everybody, I gotta
go to the bathroom. Yeah, you know, everybody arms everybody.
Trip destinations become a little bit different. You know, they
start like, I ain't never heard talking about going over there,
So you're gonna pick your hotels and all that. So like,
all that kind of stuff is different when you get
back around like fellas, you get back around a tribe

just being competing always was fun for me.

I would think too, like six months out of the year,
your lives are so structured here this time, this time,
this time, And then I would think in the offseason,
there is a point where you're kind of like, I
need you know, I need a structure.

Forty two years forty two years old, I still need structure.
I still look for that structure. Is it hard to
as players they didn't care about being in shape and
being there.

Structure, because this is how it started. When I first
came into the league, a minimum of eight weeks to
get in shape. It was a minimum because you go,
do you need four preseason games? Damn?
Speaker 5 (06:43):
The whole fight camps two months?

Well, that's another story. You you was gonna come in
as a rookie, uh, three four to three weeks, three
to four weeks ahead of everybody anyway, so you was
gonna be fighting that battle for two weeks, and then
the veterans show up with four weeks and then you
got you know, so you was gonna be fighting that battle.

So you you got in shape, you know, so sure,
but it was a different shape. See, these dudes run
to look good. We run to play football. That's everything
we did was beating yourself up. These guys nowadays, they
they look good. Oh he looks great. You know.
Speaker 8 (07:23):
I know, like back way back, like sixties and seventies,
guys showed twelve weeks that well that when they showed up,
they were now they were gonna get in shape.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah, I know they were.
Speaker 8 (07:33):
Or your era, you were showing shape all year.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Yeah, you showed up and ship.

Yeah what was it like?

Some guys, not everybody, Some guys still, some guys still
came from that era of you know, I always tell
people when we get to training camp, we start getting
to these when you start at OTA's and mini camps
and training camps, when you start seeing guys and hoodies
and sweatpants, those are the guys who are trying to
get in shape.

Yeah, those are the guys. THO was me, Look it
ain't cold outside, okay.
Speaker 7 (08:03):
Look for the guys who are in the in the
in the three X hoodies and the sweatpants.

They enjoyed their off season.

Those are guys are like I I gotta I gotta
work my way back into shape. That that that I say,
tell tale sign when you look out there on that
field and you see the dude with the with the
with the jersey on and the helmet on, and you
see that that the hood coming out in the back
of it, the big thick winter sweatsuit.

Yeah, he had a good off He tried to figure
everybody out with the plastic underneath theory.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
He had a good off season. He got that sweatsuit
underneath that. He had a good off season.

Was it was it hard for you guys, being players, to.

Connect with people. Trust. Trust is a big deal.

I know that when you're when you're playing right, because
you got people that want you for money and clout
and all that stuff. Was it hard to relate to
people outside of the locker room just from a mental aspect,
like you know, for me it was because you're always
the alpha, right, and you're always around a bunch of alphas,
and then you your work ethics different, in your commitments different.

For me, it was And that's probably why still to
this day, I don't have like, I don't have a
bunch of friends, partly because I don't like a lot
of people. But secondly, is there is a difference. There
is a difference in mentality and thinking lifestyle. At that time,
the money that I was making compared to the money

that other people were making the majority, right, and you
know it was it would be nothing for me to
go and spend a large amount of money just on
me personally, because I knew that the money was coming
way quicker than what theirs would coming. So you distance
yourself from a lot of people because there were I mean,

and I don't know if it's people do it intentionally,
There are some, but I think sometimes people do do
it unintentionally when they're around you, when you start getting stuff,
they feel like they're entitled to that stuff too.

I had to tell my wife that stop going out
with people that you know are kind of bind tamp
for who you is, so you can help them.

just drive you beat up cards to the to the

It's for especially rookies coming in because all of a
sudden got all this money and all these hangers on.

And hell, but now it's you know, it's a different world.

I mean the cat's going back's coming now.

You were both undrafted and had to fight your way
on the team. And so when you guys suddenly had
that money, did the people come out of the woodwork too?

Not for me, because I was brother. I was such
an unrudely guy. I was, uh, you didn't want to
deal with it, you know. Man, Look, bro, I'm sixty
four years old. I can go back to FAM you
right now and walk up and down that campus, and
somebody gonna walk up to me and say Nate Newton
And I'm thinking like, yeah, cowboy, not the one that

went here.

We got some stories on you.

A random lady came up to me, went to FAM
you with Nate, and I think Nate and his boys
beat up her boyfriend brother. She went to school, She
went to school at Nate and Nate and there she
was like, oh she's like the back of family. You
wasn't nothing to mess around with, oh man.

And so on campus, No, I kept to myself.

I was always by myself, not not because well, eventually
because people didn't want to deal with me. But when
I first got the fam my first year, I was quiet,
and I was quiet. I didn't bother nobody, the older guys. Yeah,
I just stayed quiet. But then my by next year,

uh Man, something came over me. Man. And for two
two or three the next two or three years, bro
it was it was my coach, coach help. It is
going into the College Black College Hall of Fame next
week June sixth in Atlanta. And I went up to
him two or three weeks ago or four weeks ago.

It was at in New Orleans doing a fair, a
job fair that uh Black College put on. And I
looked at them and said, coach, thank you, man, thank
you for not throwing me out of school, and more importantly,
thank you for just believing in me. And you know, Chay,
probably if I would have listened to you, I said,

I know this a little late, but if I would
have listened to you, I've probably have been at least
got drafted, you know, fourth fifth round, he said, Boy,
I'm sure glad you mad enough the ad Thatt's coach
tell me you don't hold nothing back. I'm sure better
late than never, you know. I just because I look back, man,

and it ain't nothing in life that I would change
the only thing I would try to change or make
an adjustment to it was how you treat people, because
it is something to when you go back in life
and you start seeing people used to, you know, going
up that ladder, you start coming down that loder, whether

it's age, whether it's lack of money, whether it's whatever.
When you start coming, these people gonna see you, and
they not gonna remember what you trying to present. Now,
they gonna remember everything that you did or said that
they thought was out of line, you know. And so
you know, when I see people, my first thing a

to college football is now, was probably the richest group
when you think about it, like the richest set of
rookies that come in in here because of how nil is.
But this group is was I felt was one of

the most mature groups that I've talked to in several
years and in recent history.

style of guy when they walked through. I have really

But when they walked when those twenty five or thirty
guys came through that a couple of weeks ago, just
for their first time walking through, they walked a little different.

over on the financial side of it, where teams can
now you know, I guess, push their dead money out
over two years to the one. So we may see
some trades coming up. Do you think the Cowboys should
be involved now? Do they need to shake things up anymore?

Yes, yes, yes, and yes one. Because this league is
built on good players. Nate Newton and company won Super
Bowls because they had a boatload of damn good players.
They don't have a guy. They had the Triplets, they
had the best offensive line. They had Charles Haley, they
(35:04):
had Darren Woodson, they had Dion they had Ken Norton.
I mean, I mean they had Russell Maryland, they had
big Cat. Yes, go and get as much talent as
you can possibly acquire.
Speaker 1 (35:17):
Go get it. This is a this is a talent
driven league. So if there's players out there that you
can go and get and and to amplify and make
your defense. Was the worst defense in all of football.
There was no defense that was more terrible than yours.
(35:38):
You should want to stockpile that defense with as many
good players as you can. And I know that we
can't say certain names because they're currently still under contract,
but you should be heavily in every conversation for those
two or three guys who will be post June one
cuts to bring to your football team. If you're serious
(35:58):
about winning, if you're truly serious about winning, and you
want to give your offensive and defensive coordinators the proper amount,
there should be no limit. There should be no limit
to the players, the good players that you want to
like you you marched in abe a bil that's that's
his uncle. You marched in, uh kyere Elon. That uncle

was daddy. I played with a uncle, Chris, do you remember,
I do remember?

Abe kyer Elon Kenneth Murray, Jack Sambourne, Logan Wilson, and
and and Donovan Wilson, Like those are the guys that
you kept putting out there in the football field. You
thought it was okay. That was not okay. What should
be okay is the days that you're thinking about that
may beat you one post you one cuts. The Cowboys
should most death fundly consider themselves in the running to

get those and and should make it very very competitive.

I was looking at kind of whatever is do they
need to maybe address, you know? And last year they were,
you know, against the past. They were thirty second in
yards allowed, last thirty first and touchdowns allowed, twenty ninth
in interceptions, and part of that was because the defensive
line wasn't great either. But the secondary now they've added eighteen.
They've got eighteen secondary corners and safeties on the roster,
(37:19):
They've got three secondary coaches, plus your defensive coordinator is
a secondary guy. They've turned all these resources at it,
and I still wonder do they have that stud back
there that you need.
Speaker 5 (37:30):

And I have to be careful how I say this,
because I know how people will take this.
Speaker 5 (37:35):
No, please don't just say it.
Speaker 14 (37:37):
Whatever the boy you go boarding, Hey, I watched that
the end. Say what you want, just don't.

Take it out.
Speaker 7 (37:50):
Caleb Downs is going to be a good player and
maybe even a great player. I I don't know if
his greatness is going to be how you want it
to look, because we we we look at especially in
(38:11):
the secondary, we want he's not gonna have ten interceptions.
It's not like I don't think he's at ten interceptions
and is all his years in college, So like, that's
not going to be a thing, like when he gets
ten interceptions in the season, eight interceptions in the season.
What his greatness is going to be is not giving
(38:34):
up sixty yard bombs. His greatness is going to be
that the communication is distributed correctly amongst the others. It's
checking the check right, It's it's that leadership type thing.
So like his impact may not look as physically visible
(38:54):
as the hype that's surrounding him, right, and so.
Speaker 8 (38:59):
It's six core your interceptions.
Speaker 7 (39:01):
That's what I'm saying. And so he may he may
end up this year with too. I say all that
to say what they have in the secondary there. There
isn't a player right now in the secondary that you
look at and you go and it gives you Ed
(39:21):
Reed vibes, or at cornerback it gives you uh Patrick
Peterson vibes. Those guys were different maker, different level makers,
because they turned the football over, they got interceptions, they
got six pick sixes. That guy still doesn't That guy's
(39:42):
not there in the secondary. And then they don't have
they don't have the I guess he's right, but he's
done it, but he's been banged up for the last
two season, two seasons. And then up front they don't
have the that they don't have the game wrecker, and
I Quinn is it is a really good player. But
(40:03):
Quinn isn't what you would want from Miles Garrett. Quinn
isn't Aaron Donald. Quinn isn't Micah right like those can
he still look I don't. I don't want to say
it like he's not a dude. He's a different dude
impactfully than those other dudes. And I think that as
a whole, that's what this defense is missing now. The
(40:25):
Christian Parker's job is to make such a group work
well together that it it can be dude lists or
not have as many dudes and still be successful. But
in that secondary, there isn't There isn't a there isn't
an overall. And again I'm not saying that Caleb won't
(40:48):
be great. It's it'll look different than what Troy Polamono.
It'll look different than what Ed Reid was, it will
look different than what Rod Woodson was.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
It is gonna look different than that.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
What you should be looking for in the first half
of the season is and I'm with you one hundred percent.
While these dudes are learning this thing, the first and
foremost thing that you want is to get off the field.
And third, especially third and medium or third and long.
That is where we did not get off the field.
(41:21):
That is the first sign of we are progressing. We're
getting off the Field's third and medium we win six
percent of those. It's third and long, we win all
of those, and we get off the field. Because you
saw a lot of times last year it's third and
twenty these dudes getting first downs.
Speaker 5 (41:40):
You know it's third and medium.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
What I mean by that fifth, third and five thirty.
You know, all of a sudden, these dudes got a
first down. You start getting off the field first, and
once you start getting off the field, that means you're
telling me you understanding my defense. You play, you being
ways supposed to be. Now all of a sudden you
saw graduating because you start feeling good and you say, okay,
(42:03):
I'm still going through this a gap, but I'm looking
from this set, playing this play. But until then, you
got to play the defense and get off the field.
If you just get off the field, now you get
your offense the chance to be everything it can be.
Speaker 8 (42:17):
So if you're doing maybe Downs or Thompson or Revel
or Bland, whoever steps up as that a plus guy
in the secondary. But if you don't have that, if
you've got but you've got six B plus guys, can
you be successful there?
Speaker 5 (42:32):
Yeah? Yes, yes, sir.
Speaker 1 (42:33):
Will you be a top ten defense? No, but you'll
be far, far, far.
Speaker 7 (42:38):
Better than what you were a year ago. And I
think that is enough. When you couple with your offense,
is going to be a plus. Right, Your offense between
your quarterback, your receivers, that's gonna that's gonna cover a
lot of warts.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Right.
Speaker 1 (42:51):
But last year the size of the of the of the.
Speaker 7 (42:57):
Damage was so enormous that the like don't. We can't
stitch this up enough to help win these games. Now
what that defense is playing and today, And I love
that point, and I'm definitely gonna be still doing what
you say because that's a great point of getting off
the field initially, because now what you look at is
when I get eleven guys doing the defense the way
(43:19):
it's designed to be done, that's when they call that football.
Speaker 1 (43:22):
Luck starts to play itself.
Speaker 7 (43:24):
That's when you start getting the interception, the turnovers because
there isn't open guys. It becomes tighter to get off
the field. Now the offense when they when they got
three three and outs, Now that quarterback begins to feel
the pressure and now he's forcing the ball in the
place where it shouldn't know because he don'na have a.
Speaker 1 (43:41):
Four to three and out.
Speaker 7 (43:43):
Now the luck of the defense begins to show up
because you did all the right things and got three
and outs and got off the field opposed to where
before Jay J. McCarthy and all they back there comfortable.
They back there like, well, what do I want to
go with the ball?
Speaker 5 (43:58):
Now?
Speaker 1 (43:58):
Oh, I'll go that way, I'll go this way.
Speaker 7 (44:00):
So there was never a level of pressure that was
put on them that forced them to make a bad
decision or force them to.
Speaker 1 (44:06):
Make a forced throw or bad throw.
Speaker 7 (44:08):
Right like, So, when you can start to next point,
when you start utilizing the defense and playing it the
way it's supposed to be played, the football, luck begins
to the percentage of luck begins to work in your favor.
Because offense begins to press. Quarterbacks don't have proper windows
to throw to. Now that they're thinking a little bit more, well,
now here comes the rush. Right now, Quinn breaks through
(44:29):
the line and gets a sack. Now Caleb Down steps
in front of a ball or tips it or what
have you. And now you know, Thompson or whoever gets
an interception, and you start churning the tide of how
this defense been playing and how the game goes.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
So that's what you can hope for.
Speaker 2 (44:42):
The things that you want. And you know what I
always look at it from a defensive standpoint is you
want your kicker to be a luxury. You don't want
to be coming in.
Speaker 5 (44:53):
Hey man, you know we got this kicker.
Speaker 2 (44:55):
All we gotta do is get five yards past to fifty.
Because you don't believe in your defense, so you're trying
to score in and every way you can. You you
gotta you gotta keep that mentality. But make it a
team that you were playing that's worthy. The average team
last year could come in here and have us thinking
that way. No, no, make make it like when we
(45:17):
play Seattle. We know this's gonna be a dog. We
know every point count. Okay, now this is our kicker.
But come on, man, some of these teams. Come on, now,
I don't know every team. You can't. You can't feel
that way. You gotta either go forward or punt it away.

there working out five days a week when we want

week for doing this. Were gonna pay you were gonna
pay you one hundred a week, and everybody better be there.
It wasn't voluntary, wasn't nothing. Yeah, you be there, and
so on this day we'll all meet as a team.

Because yes I did, And I was so far out
of shape that time of year, so fart of shape,

your teammates that make as much or more money than you.
So you might have it this time, they got it
next time. When you're in the off season and you're
dealing with your regular friends, you gotta pay for everything.

You go on vacation with your lady or with your boys,
they're looking for you to pay for everything. And so
after you know.

A lot of t Rexes out there, aren't there.
Speaker 7 (05:32):
Man, When that bill come, everybody almays, everybody, I gotta
go to the bathroom. Yeah, you know, everybody arms everybody.
Trip destinations become a little bit different. You know, they
start like, I ain't never heard talking about going over there,
So you're gonna pick your hotels and all that. So like,
all that kind of stuff is different when you get
back around like fellas, you get back around a tribe

of people who.

Are on the same.

Wave lifted you and and I love to compete, so
just being competing always was fun for me.

I would think too, like six months out of the year,
your lives are so structured here this time, this time,
this time, And then I would think in the offseason,
there is a point where you're kind of like, I
need you know, I need a structure.

I still love that.

Forty two years forty two years old, I still need structure.
I still look for that structure. Is it hard to
as players they didn't care about being in shape and
being there.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Structure, because this is how it started. When I first
came into the league, a minimum of eight weeks to
get in shape. It was a minimum because you go,
do you need four preseason games? Damn?
Speaker 5 (06:43):
The whole fight camps two months?
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Well, that's another story. You you was gonna come in
as a rookie, uh, three four to three weeks, three
to four weeks ahead of everybody anyway, so you was
gonna be fighting that battle for two weeks, and then
the veterans show up with four weeks and then you
got you know, so you was gonna be fighting that battle.

So you you got in shape, you know, so sure,
but it was a different shape. See, these dudes run
to look good. We run to play football. That's everything
we did was beating yourself up. These guys nowadays, they
they look good. Oh he looks great. You know.
Speaker 8 (07:23):
I know, like back way back, like sixties and seventies,
guys showed twelve weeks that well that when they showed up,
they were now they were gonna get in shape.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah, I know they were.
Speaker 8 (07:33):
Or your era, you were showing shape all year.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Yeah, you showed up and ship.
Speaker 8 (07:37):
Yeah what was it like?
Speaker 7 (07:38):
Some guys, not everybody, Some guys still, some guys still
came from that era of you know, I always tell
people when we get to training camp, we start getting
to these when you start at OTA's and mini camps
and training camps, when you start seeing guys and hoodies
and sweatpants, those are the guys who are trying to
get in shape.

Yeah, those are the guys. THO was me, Look it
ain't cold outside, okay.
Speaker 7 (08:03):
Look for the guys who are in the in the
in the three X hoodies and the sweatpants.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
They enjoyed their off season.

Those are guys are like I I gotta I gotta
work my way back into shape. That that that I say,
tell tale sign when you look out there on that
field and you see the dude with the with the
with the jersey on and the helmet on, and you
see that that the hood coming out in the back
of it, the big thick winter sweatsuit.

Yeah, he had a good off He tried to figure
everybody out with the plastic underneath theory.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
He had a good off season. He got that sweatsuit
underneath that. He had a good off season.
Speaker 6 (08:38):
Was it was it hard for you guys, being players, to.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
Connect with people. Trust. Trust is a big deal.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
I know that when you're when you're playing right, because
you got people that want you for money and clout
and all that stuff. Was it hard to relate to
people outside of the locker room just from a mental aspect,
like you know, for me it was because you're always
the alpha, right, and you're always around a bunch of alphas,
and then you your work ethics different, in your commitments different.

For me, it was And that's probably why still to
this day, I don't have like, I don't have a
bunch of friends, partly because I don't like a lot
of people. But secondly, is there is a difference. There
is a difference in mentality and thinking lifestyle. At that time,
the money that I was making compared to the money

that other people were making the majority, right, and you
know it was it would be nothing for me to
go and spend a large amount of money just on
me personally, because I knew that the money was coming
way quicker than what theirs would coming. So you distance
yourself from a lot of people because there were I mean,

and I don't know if it's people do it intentionally,
There are some, but I think sometimes people do do
it unintentionally when they're around you, when you start getting stuff,
they feel like they're entitled to that stuff too.

I had to tell my wife that stop going out
with people that you know are kind of bind tamp
for who you is, so you can help them.

You know. Uh my dad taught me that, Hey, man,
just drive you beat up cards to the to the
to the place. No, you know, you ain't gonna show

It's for especially rookies coming in because all of a
sudden got all this money and all these hangers on.

And hell, but now it's you know, it's a different world.

These are they coming to They going back to school.
I mean the cat's going back's coming now.

You know already three million dollars in the bank.

Both you guys came up. I mean it wasn't easy.
You were both undrafted and had to fight your way
on the team. And so when you guys suddenly had
that money, did the people come out of the woodwork too?

Not for me, because I was brother. I was such
an unrudely guy. I was, uh, you didn't want to
deal with it, you know. Man, Look, bro, I'm sixty
four years old. I can go back to FAM you
right now and walk up and down that campus, and
somebody gonna walk up to me and say Nate Newton
And I'm thinking like, yeah, cowboy, not the one that

went here.

Wait, what are you mean, man?

We got some stories on you.

I thirty five.

A random lady came up to me, went to FAM
you with Nate, and I think Nate and his boys
beat up her boyfriend brother. She went to school, She
went to school at Nate and Nate and there she
was like, oh she's like the back of family. You
wasn't nothing to mess around with, oh man.

And so on campus, No, I kept to myself.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
I was always by myself, not not because well, eventually
because people didn't want to deal with me. But when
I first got the fam my first year, I was quiet,
and I was quiet. I didn't bother nobody, the older guys. Yeah,
I just stayed quiet. But then my by next year,

uh Man, something came over me. Man. And for two
two or three the next two or three years, bro
it was it was my coach, coach help. It is
going into the College Black College Hall of Fame next
week June sixth in Atlanta. And I went up to
him two or three weeks ago or four weeks ago.

It was at in New Orleans doing a fair, a
job fair that uh Black College put on. And I
looked at them and said, coach, thank you, man, thank
you for not throwing me out of school, and more importantly,
thank you for just believing in me. And you know, Chay,
probably if I would have listened to you, I said,

I know this a little late, but if I would
have listened to you, I've probably have been at least
got drafted, you know, fourth fifth round, he said, Boy,
I'm sure glad you mad enough the ad Thatt's coach
tell me you don't hold nothing back. I'm sure better
late than never, you know. I just because I look back, man,

and it ain't nothing in life that I would change
the only thing I would try to change or make
an adjustment to it was how you treat people, because
it is something to when you go back in life
and you start seeing people used to, you know, going
up that ladder, you start coming down that loder, whether

it's age, whether it's lack of money, whether it's whatever.
When you start coming, these people gonna see you, and
they not gonna remember what you trying to present. Now,
they gonna remember everything that you did or said that
they thought was out of line, you know. And so
you know, when I see people, my first thing a
found is I'm careful.

bunch of money. Have you seen that in the rookies?
Like change in them, I guess or their personalities.

Or every group is very uniquely different, like this particular group,
and this is probably one of the This is this
group in particular, in the way the landscape college going
to college football is now, was probably the richest group
when you think about it, like the richest set of
rookies that come in in here because of how nil is.
But this group is was I felt was one of

the most mature groups that I've talked to in several
years and in recent history.

By far, like man from man. Just I mean, I've
been in there.

And of course you get your classic guy who's like,

I think I think there's the individuals, the individuals in
this group.

of like on the final chapter of that.

might you're dealing with some older kids. So that may
be a little bit of it. Maybe, But it just
may be a good group of kids.

Yeah, I might say, yeah, it's intentional, man, because you
can't every year keep getting wild card kids. Uh. Coach Parcels,
Jimmy Johnson, even even Bill they they they don't want
to deal with wild cards. They say it's good to
get one a year wild card. He's just a guy

great chance on this kid. He's got the first round
talent and a free agent mind. You know what I'm saying.
Not knocking at us yet, but you know, yes, yeah, yeah,
But so I think these coaches went at a different
style of guy when they walked through. I have really

met him per se one on one mess with him.
But when they walked when those twenty five or thirty
guys came through that a couple of weeks ago, just
for their first time walking through, they walked a little different.

They looked a little different.

You'd be like, you know what, nobody was overwhelmed, you know,
like they was, you know, like, you know, like I
would have been walking that WHOA coming from fam? You know, wow?

simple is that these guys were kind of laser focused on,
you know, doing what they had to do, and they
went right in the meetings, they met these certain guys

good to hear that what I perceive from the start is.

Now, I don't know, I don't know. I don't know
what that means on the football fields. That's yet to
be seen. You would hope that it translates the maturity,
the ability to study, learn how to be a professional
lock into what you have to do not let because
Dallas is is you talk about it, you know you

and burn you up in such a way that before
you know it, you it's out of control. Like that's
this place. This is for it not to be like
a New York or Vegas or like one of there's
like really high popular type cities. The culture here in
Dallas will lead you to believe you're far bigger than

to be able to decipher whether or not that is
you and real and also how to say, well that's manufacturer.

there's guys currently on this team that we've seen coming

through many times and we always talk about do they

Game or they love what the game brings?

And you can get to Dallas and we talk about
the tours and this the taj Mahal type effect to it,
the TV exposure. There's always going to be a camera
or a name there. We said this before we got

To talk about one team, right, Like Derek, don't shut

Did you guys see veterans come in from other teams,
Guys who had been around the league kind of knew
what to expect. That struggled with Dallas with the media.

Scene when I went to the Carolina Panthers, you know,
and I'm not going to go back through the tragedy
that happened, you know, Steve Berlin, I had to call
me to the side when they're saying they hold on
the Saint Dallas. We need to meet about certain things
in the media that y'all just y'all know how automatically

when to shut up, when to talk, what to say.
These guys don't. So it was a tragic incident. Well
young man heard a young lady and they it shook them.

ain't Dallas. Dallas brings on a whole different deal to

the benefits. But we as podcasters, we as media were
we're all competing for the same piece of ply. So
the days of writing or saying what you really see

lot of shows. And I'm not saying our podcast shows,
but a lot of shows, a lot of media people.
They got to bend it a little bit. They got
to keep it interesting. This thing is very competitive about there.

I want to say it was Brad Johnson. Were you

He was here for two years and one of the
guys was talking about, you know, he'd been around the league, Tampa,

and they had thirty thousand people at a practice and
he was like, are you serious, Like we may have
you know, thirty people show up for a training camp

practice and they're practice in the Alamodome and there's thirty
forty thousand people showing up for a practice.

over on the financial side of it, where teams can
now you know, I guess, push their dead money out
over two years to the one. So we may see
some trades coming up. Do you think the Cowboys should
be involved now? Do they need to shake things up anymore?
Speaker 7 (34:42):
Yes, yes, yes, and yes one. Because this league is
built on good players. Nate Newton and company won Super
Bowls because they had a boatload of damn good players.
They don't have a guy. They had the Triplets, they
had the best offensive line. They had Charles Haley, they
(35:04):
had Darren Woodson, they had Dion they had Ken Norton.
I mean, I mean they had Russell Maryland, they had
big Cat. Yes, go and get as much talent as
you can possibly acquire.
Speaker 1 (35:17):
Go get it. This is a this is a talent
driven league. So if there's players out there that you
can go and get and and to amplify and make
your defense. Was the worst defense in all of football.
There was no defense that was more terrible than yours.
(35:38):
You should want to stockpile that defense with as many
good players as you can. And I know that we
can't say certain names because they're currently still under contract,
but you should be heavily in every conversation for those
two or three guys who will be post June one
cuts to bring to your football team. If you're serious
(35:58):
about winning, if you're truly serious about winning, and you
want to give your offensive and defensive coordinators the proper amount,
there should be no limit. There should be no limit
to the players, the good players that you want to
like you you marched in abe a bil that's that's
his uncle. You marched in, uh kyere Elon. That uncle

was daddy. I played with a uncle, Chris, do you remember,

you kept putting out there in the football field. You
thought it was okay. That was not okay. What should
be okay is the days that you're thinking about that
may beat you one post you one cuts. The Cowboys
should most death fundly consider themselves in the running to

get those and and should make it very very competitive.

I was looking at kind of whatever is do they
need to maybe address, you know? And last year they were,
you know, against the past. They were thirty second in
yards allowed, last thirty first and touchdowns allowed, twenty ninth
in interceptions, and part of that was because the defensive
line wasn't great either. But the secondary now they've added eighteen.
They've got eighteen secondary corners and safeties on the roster,
(37:19):
They've got three secondary coaches, plus your defensive coordinator is
a secondary guy. They've turned all these resources at it,
and I still wonder do they have that stud back
there that you need.
Speaker 5 (37:30):

Speaker 7 (37:32):
And I have to be careful how I say this,
because I know how people will take this.
Speaker 5 (37:35):
No, please don't just say it.
Speaker 14 (37:37):
Whatever the boy you go boarding, Hey, I watched that
the end. Say what you want, just don't.
Speaker 5 (37:48):
Take it out.
Speaker 7 (37:50):
Caleb Downs is going to be a good player and
maybe even a great player. I I don't know if
his greatness is going to be how you want it
to look, because we we we look at especially in
(38:11):
the secondary, we want he's not gonna have ten interceptions.
It's not like I don't think he's at ten interceptions
and is all his years in college, So like, that's
not going to be a thing, like when he gets
ten interceptions in the season, eight interceptions in the season.
What his greatness is going to be is not giving
(38:34):
up sixty yard bombs. His greatness is going to be
that the communication is distributed correctly amongst the others. It's
checking the check right, It's it's that leadership type thing.
So like his impact may not look as physically visible
(38:54):
as the hype that's surrounding him, right, and so.
Speaker 8 (38:59):
It's six core your interceptions.
Speaker 7 (39:01):
That's what I'm saying. And so he may he may
end up this year with too. I say all that
to say what they have in the secondary there. There
isn't a player right now in the secondary that you
look at and you go and it gives you Ed
(39:21):
Reed vibes, or at cornerback it gives you uh Patrick
Peterson vibes. Those guys were different maker, different level makers,
because they turned the football over, they got interceptions, they
got six pick sixes. That guy still doesn't That guy's
(39:42):
not there in the secondary. And then they don't have
they don't have the I guess he's right, but he's
done it, but he's been banged up for the last
two season, two seasons. And then up front they don't
have the that they don't have the game wrecker, and
I Quinn is it is a really good player. But
(40:03):
Quinn isn't what you would want from Miles Garrett. Quinn
isn't Aaron Donald. Quinn isn't Micah right like those can
he still look I don't. I don't want to say
it like he's not a dude. He's a different dude
impactfully than those other dudes. And I think that as
a whole, that's what this defense is missing now. The
(40:25):
Christian Parker's job is to make such a group work
well together that it it can be dude lists or
not have as many dudes and still be successful. But
in that secondary, there isn't There isn't a there isn't
an overall. And again I'm not saying that Caleb won't
(40:48):
be great. It's it'll look different than what Troy Polamono.
It'll look different than what Ed Reid was, it will
look different than what Rod Woodson was.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
It is gonna look different than that.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
What you should be looking for in the first half
of the season is and I'm with you one hundred percent.
While these dudes are learning this thing, the first and
foremost thing that you want is to get off the field.
And third, especially third and medium or third and long.
That is where we did not get off the field.
(41:21):
That is the first sign of we are progressing. We're
getting off the Field's third and medium we win six
percent of those. It's third and long, we win all
of those, and we get off the field. Because you
saw a lot of times last year it's third and
twenty these dudes getting first downs.
Speaker 5 (41:40):
You know it's third and medium.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
What I mean by that fifth, third and five thirty.
You know, all of a sudden, these dudes got a
first down. You start getting off the field first, and
once you start getting off the field, that means you're
telling me you understanding my defense. You play, you being
ways supposed to be. Now all of a sudden you
saw graduating because you start feeling good and you say, okay,
(42:03):
I'm still going through this a gap, but I'm looking
from this set, playing this play. But until then, you
got to play the defense and get off the field.
If you just get off the field, now you get
your offense the chance to be everything it can be.
Speaker 8 (42:17):
So if you're doing maybe Downs or Thompson or Revel
or Bland, whoever steps up as that a plus guy
in the secondary. But if you don't have that, if
you've got but you've got six B plus guys, can
you be successful there?
Speaker 5 (42:32):
Yeah? Yes, yes, sir.
Speaker 1 (42:33):
Will you be a top ten defense? No, but you'll
be far, far, far.
Speaker 7 (42:38):
Better than what you were a year ago. And I
think that is enough. When you couple with your offense,
is going to be a plus. Right, Your offense between
your quarterback, your receivers, that's gonna that's gonna cover a
lot of warts.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Right.
Speaker 1 (42:51):
But last year the size of the of the of the.
Speaker 7 (42:57):
Damage was so enormous that the like don't. We can't
stitch this up enough to help win these games. Now
what that defense is playing and today, And I love
that point, and I'm definitely gonna be still doing what
you say because that's a great point of getting off
the field initially, because now what you look at is
when I get eleven guys doing the defense the way
(43:19):
it's designed to be done, that's when they call that football.
Speaker 1 (43:22):
Luck starts to play itself.
Speaker 7 (43:24):
That's when you start getting the interception, the turnovers because
there isn't open guys. It becomes tighter to get off
the field. Now the offense when they when they got
three three and outs, Now that quarterback begins to feel
the pressure and now he's forcing the ball in the
place where it shouldn't know because he don'na have a.
Speaker 1 (43:41):
Four to three and out.
Speaker 7 (43:43):
Now the luck of the defense begins to show up
because you did all the right things and got three
and outs and got off the field opposed to where
before Jay J. McCarthy and all they back there comfortable.
They back there like, well, what do I want to
go with the ball?
Speaker 5 (43:58):
Now?
Speaker 1 (43:58):
Oh, I'll go that way, I'll go this way.
Speaker 7 (44:00):
So there was never a level of pressure that was
put on them that forced them to make a bad
decision or force them to.
Speaker 1 (44:06):
Make a forced throw or bad throw.
Speaker 7 (44:08):
Right like, So, when you can start to next point,
when you start utilizing the defense and playing it the
way it's supposed to be played, the football, luck begins
to the percentage of luck begins to work in your favor.
Because offense begins to press. Quarterbacks don't have proper windows
to throw to. Now that they're thinking a little bit more, well,
now here comes the rush. Right now, Quinn breaks through
(44:29):
the line and gets a sack. Now Caleb Down steps
in front of a ball or tips it or what
have you. And now you know, Thompson or whoever gets
an interception, and you start churning the tide of how
this defense been playing and how the game goes.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
So that's what you can hope for.
Speaker 2 (44:42):
The things that you want. And you know what I
always look at it from a defensive standpoint is you
want your kicker to be a luxury. You don't want
to be coming in.
Speaker 5 (44:53):
Hey man, you know we got this kicker.
Speaker 2 (44:55):
All we gotta do is get five yards past to fifty.
Because you don't believe in your defense, so you're trying
to score in and every way you can. You you
gotta you gotta keep that mentality. But make it a
team that you were playing that's worthy. The average team
last year could come in here and have us thinking
that way. No, no, make make it like when we
(45:17):
play Seattle. We know this's gonna be a dog. We
know every point count. Okay, now this is our kicker.
But come on, man, some of these teams. Come on, now,
I don't know every team. You can't. You can't feel
that way. You gotta either go forward or punt it away.
Speaker 9 (45:36):
