Idag vet man att tidig upptäckt av autistiska beteenden och anpassat stöd, är viktigt för barnets fortsatta utveckling. I boken introduceras en modell för hur vi kan förstå autism bättre, för att man ska kunna upptäcka autistiska beteenden hos barn i förskoleåldern. Begreppet "automatiska inlärningsbeteenden" introduceras för beteenden som annars beskrivs som udda, begränsade och repetitiva.
