Hello and welcome to another Prayer through the Psalms episode
of the Praying Christian Women podcast. I'm Jamie and we
are going to be talking about and praying through Psalm.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Sixty two today.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
If this is your first time joining us, I'm so
glad you're here. This is my kind of favorite time
of the week. I love taking this time to just
breathe and just invite God into the chaos of living.
I just feel like, more than ever, we are just

(00:38):
busy people, and this time is a respite from some
of that busyness. But I think it's also an invitation
to set better boundaries. When I feel the breath of
fresh air that it is to sit here with you
and to talk about the psalms and to pray through
them and meditate on them and invite God into our
lives reminds me of the fact that our life is

(01:03):
about so much more than the things we do, and
so it is. It's just a really good invitation. Psalm
sixty two is another beautiful psalm. Last time we had
this amazing psalm of celebrating God's bigness and his protection
and his you know, being a refuge and sheltering us

(01:25):
under the shadow of His wings. This one is another
where David is saying that God alone is a refuge
from treachery and oppression, and so he goes into some
specifics of what he's going through, which I think a
lot of us can relate to.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
This is for the choir director.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
According to Jeduthan, this has us cross reference First Chronicle
sixteen forty one, twenty five to one, Psalm thirty nine
and seventy seven for the titles. So he talks in
this particular Psalm about treachery, about people that are pretending
to be blessing him and then inwardly they're cursing him.

(02:06):
I think we can look at this particular concept from
two directions. We can look at it as, are you
facing someone who's doing that to you? Are you facing
maybe discovering someone was not who you thought they were.
Maybe they weren't the friend you thought they were, Maybe
they were not a business partner and proponent of you.

(02:27):
Maybe they said that they thought you were good and
then they're bad mouthing you to someone else, or maybe
their actions speak differently from their words.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
We've all been.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
There, and maybe that's what you're facing now. But I
see it just as you know. Going into this, I
think today we'll incorporate some confession. Are we people of
our word? Are we speaking one thing and thinking another?
Are we showing integrity in the things that we're saying.

(02:56):
Are the texts that you send about someone, or even
the thoughts you're thinking in your own mind about someone,
are they truly what's good and noble and pure and
excellent and praiseworthy. Or are we being double minded and
double tongued and so I don't know.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
For me, that's just something. I'm a people pleaser.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
I'm a peacekeeper, and sometimes I think if I'm being
really brutally honest with you, and it's embarrassing to admit,
I think that sometimes I will say things to people
and then think something different.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
I am outwardly.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
I don't think most people would consider me a judgmental person.
But it's interesting that, as I've been praying recently for
God to reveal hidden sin, I didn't get to talk
to you about this last time when we I think
it was two times ago when we had like a
confession time, and I meant to say it, but I didn't.
One of the things I felt convicted of in our

(03:54):
time of confession is that I'm way more judgmental than
I let on, and so my inner critic criticizes people
way more than I realized. And so I'm working on that.
I'm working on training my brain to be more gracious,
to be as gracious as my output as the words

(04:15):
that I say. I won't be like the first person
to jump in and gossip about someone. But I've just noticed,
since I've invited the Holy Spirit in to search me,
that I've been catching thoughts.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
And that's what it's all about.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
It's becoming quicker to notice the things that are sinful,
whether it's thoughts, whether it's words, whether it's actions.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
So yeah, let's take some.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Time and we will incorporate some prayer and confession into
this prayer time. But yeah, as we look through this
and see some of these things, let's definitely remember the
things that are coming against us that we need God's
protection from. But we need God's intervention when we are
the ones oppressing, when we are the ones judging, when

(05:01):
we are the ones double minded and double tongued toward
the people around us. All right, let's pray, Lord God,

(05:23):
we need you more than ever.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
In this world where we are just so busy. We
need you.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
We need you as our anchor in this world where
truth seems to be kind of being traded for relativism.
We need your truth to anchor us as well. And
so God, I just pray. I almost feel the relief
of tethering myself to you as my anchor. I sometimes

(05:52):
just feel like I'm blown and tossed.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Thank you. Thank you for your.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Word, which is a source of truth that we can
have in our hands. If we're blessed enough to be
able to have a Bible in our hands, we're able
to stand on the truths that are timeless, even when
the times around us are changing and the perspectives of
people are changing, and circumstances of the world are changing.

(06:19):
Your truths never change. We just pray for the wisdom
to read your truths with eyes that can see to
the heart of what they mean. We pray that we
would be unwavering on the things that are carved in stone.
But we also pray for teachability and adaptability to be

(06:42):
able to apply those truths to a wide range of situations.
And that's where your Holy Spirit comes in. So we
do ask Lord for your Holy spirit to guide us
to direct us. We thank you for the words of
Jesus and the example of his life that he gave us,
and just pray that we would be able to keep
our eyes fixed on him, that we could become more

(07:04):
and more like him. And Lord, I confess right now
that there are things in my life that I'm not
even that aware of, and thank you for being faithful
to draw them out when I ask you to draw
them out. And I do confess that I can say
one thing and think another. I pray that I would

(07:28):
be as gracious and generous and loving toward people in
my heart and in my mind as I am in
my speech. And I pray that you would give us
the opportunity to hear from you now as we take
this minute or so of silence, Search me, Oh God,

(07:50):
and know my heart, Test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me, need
me in the way everlasting. Speak to us, Holy Spirit. God,

(09:01):
We just thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit,
for the gift of your word, and just pray that
we would be able to just continue to run the
race with perseverance, unshackle us from anything that's slowing us
down or holding us back from the plans that you
have for us, for the purposes that you've created us
for in Jesus' name.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
Amen.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
All right, let's read through Psalm sixty two. So again
the title is God alone, a refuge from treachery and
oppression for the choir director. According to Jeduthan, a Psalm
of David, my soul waits in silence for God.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
Only.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
From Him is my salvation. He only is my rock
and my salvation, my stronghold. I shall not be greatly shaken.
How long will you assail a man that you may
murder him, all of you like a leaning wall, like
a tottering fence. They have counseled only to thrust him

(10:03):
down from his high position. They delight in falsehood. They
bless with their mouths. They bless with their mouth, but
inwardly they curse Selah. My soul wait in silence for
God only, for my hope is from Him. He only

(10:23):
is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold. I shall
not be shaken. On God, my salvation and my glory
rest the rock of my strength. My refuge is in God.
Trust in Him at all times. O people, pour out
your heart before him. God is a refuge for us Selah.

(10:48):
Men of low degree are only vanity, and men of
rank are a lie. In the balances they go up,
they are together lighter than breath. Do not trust in oppression,
and do not vainly hope in robbery. If riches increase,
do not set your heart upon them. Once God has

(11:11):
spoken twice, I have heard this that power belongs to God.
And loving kindness is your oul. Lord, for you recompense
a man according to his work.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Amen.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
I like that this word waits where it says verse one,
My soul waits in silence for God only. According to
the lexicon, that word, actually it doesn't just mean sitting.
It doesn't just mean like doing nothing. It actually has

(11:46):
to do with stillness creating silence. It's kind of an
active word. It's a stillness. It's almost like quieting yourself.
And so it's a verb. It's not just like a
passive thing. Let's say that it's not a passive verb.
It's an active verb. It's quieting yourself. And that kind

(12:10):
of goes back to that conviction that I feel of
needing to quiet myself and set aside stillness and wait
for God only, and not to be doing so much
all the time, and not to be inputting, like we
have so many inputs. We've got podcasts, We've got it's

(12:33):
kind of meta because you're listening to a podcast, but
we've got podcasts, we've got music, we've got news, we've
got audio books, we've got movies and Netflix documentaries and
whatever it is digital or not, we've got. Then there
are all the other things, concerts, activities, parties, work, social gatherings, church, ministry.
It's all kind of input. There's output involved, but there's

(12:56):
so much coming in. We need to actively create white space.
And if we don't do that today, in today's day
and age, it's not going to happen. And it's only
in that stillness. It's only in that silence that God
meets us sometimes. I mean, obviously He can meet us anywhere,

(13:17):
but we miss out on the still small voice God.
You know what do they say? God is a gentleman.
He's not going to impose himself on you. You need to
invite him, you need to make space for him. And
so this verse one, I could just stop there, full stop.
My soul waits in silence for God only. And then
this is what I love verse five. I kind of

(13:39):
hesitated there because I realized in verse five it doesn't
repeat my soul waits in silence for God only. It says,
my soul wait in silence for God only. My soul comma.
So it kind of goes. In the very beginning, David
is praising and he's saying, my soul waits for silence
and God only. It's it's being obedient what I had

(14:00):
hoped it would do. And then verses three through four,
how long will you assail a man that you may
murder him? And talking about these people that delight in
falsehood and blessing on one side and cursing inwardly.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
And so then it's like, as a.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Result of all of this turmoil, I'm not My soul
isn't waiting. It's restless. It wants to do something, it
wants to run, it wants to maybe confront. I don't know,
but there's so much. My soul's response is chaos to
the chaos. And yet David says in verse five, my
soul hold on, wait, wait in silence for God only.

(14:37):
Remember that stillness you felt before, And that's what we
can do is we can feed on the stillness we
have here in these times together, and we can revert back.
We can be like, oh wait, wait, wait, okay, I
know how to do this.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
Come on, soul.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
Let's coach our souls to be quiet. For my hope
is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation. Strong,
I shall not be shaken. So I pray, my prayer,
my hope is that you will have through these times

(15:10):
that we spend together, that we'll be training and coaching
ourselves to invite silence and stillness in And I just
pray that your week, your day would just be filled
with that stillness and that presence of God. Let's pray,
Lord God, we we love you, and we thank you

(15:35):
that you are our respite, that you are our salvation,
our stronghold, and our refuge. We confess that we do
not embrace stillness. In fact, we chase after the opposite.
We chase after striving. We chase after achieving and accomplishing.

(15:57):
We chase after learning and information and input. It's everywhere.
We have an insatiable need and desire to input, and
I am the worst offender of anyone. Input can be
an amazing strength, but it can also be a hurdle

(16:19):
and a block to hearing from you. And so we
invite you to gently remind us for the need for stillness.
We choose you God, We choose to quiet our souls.
We choose to coach our busyness into stillness. And so

(16:40):
my soul wait in silence. That's going to be our
new mantra, our new instruction to our soul. And we
just pray that your Holy Spirit would remind us when
we get too busy. Please have mercy on us. Don't
let us be victims of our own busyness. Convict us

(17:04):
with your spirit that it's time for a break. Equip
us with tools of discipline to incorporate those times into
our daily lives and our routines and our rhythms, not
to add one more thing to the to do list,
but to truly meet with you for our benefit and

(17:25):
for your glory.
