Both Nirvana and Pearl Jam followed their previous massive hits (which were still in the charts), with equally acclaimed follow-ups – In Utero and Vs., respectively. But the year was about much more than angst-ridden alternative rock. Hip hop continued its ascendency, both critically and commercially.
