And it's the final tune up going into what is
the roll of the off season, a true vacation time
for a lot of the players, coaches, personnel in the building,
and then it's training camp and you get right back
into it whenever training camp comes around. But this is
going to be the best look to this point that
we've had of Christian Parker's defense. It's gonna be the
best look we've had at the rookies. It's gonna be

the best look that we've had at some of the
new veterans in the building. Let's start with some news
and notes, but it is an exciting week and starting
to feel like football a little bit again, and then
it won't for a long time.

George Pickens, as expected, has reported it to Cowboys Mandatory. Finally,
George has.

Returned the pro.

If he's just not there, he was here yesterday he said,
I got my physical done day, I'm.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Out of here. Yeah. So, yeah, George Pickens in the building.

Speaker 10 (05:18):
We sat here on this same podcast not a couple
of weeks ago, and we said our expectation was that
George Pickens will be president in accounted for when mandatory
mini camp got underway.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Uh.

Speaker 10 (05:29):
Not for the least of reasons is that he signed
his franchise tag, which means the Cowboys could officially find
him if he did not appear for mini camp. So
he is in the building, had his physical yesterday. All
went well. Now the next question is the obvious question
from fans, will you know, know, see what do you.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Expect him to do?

Speaker 11 (05:47):
Uh?

Speaker 10 (05:47):
On the field, not much of anything. Some individual drills.
They will be very methodical with this.

Speaker 1 (05:53):

The only workout, so to speak, that he's had plural
workouts would have been his throwing sessions with Dak Scott,
but that's not been for a couple of months now.
So George Pickens is gonna have to get kind of
back in the football shape. He's in shape, but you know,
there's a difference between the two things. So's mini campus
three days. I don't expect them to try to fully
unleash him. In any type of team drill team situation,

he'll dip his toe in the pool, but they're gonna
kind of bubble rap him a little bit until training camp.
But George Pickens is definitely in the building and ready.

to do what is does when Isaiah's getting in the pool,

Cowboys knock on wood have no headlines that can be

Last time that that happened, I don't want to I
don't want to say that.

You know what the next conversation is, what was the

You know? Who's your medal linebacker? That's going to be
the conversation.

Well, we know that's probably a fair conce Well, if you.

Ask, I was about to say, we know who believes
he's going to get it, which is the Marreon Overstown.
He said it with his chest with it on a Tuesday,
both picked and what did he say?

Both Patrick.

He basically said that he has always had the ability
to play Mike, and we know that he did some
of that at Texas, but he basically alluded to the
fact that he was moved away from Mike to begin
his career, and he's saying that he's about to show
everyone that he has that in him to be the
MIC and to lead the linebacker corps and to lead
the heart of the defense. This was the Marveon overshown

just last week. So, yeah, Demo wants the smoke for
middle linebacker and he wants the green dot.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
He wants it real bad.

Speaker 8 (08:55):
He's confident of anything, But is he ready for that spot.
I'm a little I'm a little off on it, man.

Speaker 9 (09:00):
I don't I don't feel necessarily comfortable with that spot.

Speaker 8 (09:03):
Again, like we've talked about the best availability or the
best ability is availability, and we haven't seen that yet.
We haven't seen a full season yet from Demo and
putting him at such.

Speaker 9 (09:12):
A crucial spot, a spot that you've had.

Speaker 8 (09:13):
Question marked in since basically the season ended, or actually
since the season started last year.

Speaker 9 (09:19):
So to me, it's a little up in the air.

Speaker 8 (09:22):
And I don't know that I would feel comfortable going
that route and saying like this is our plan going forward.

Speaker 9 (09:27):
I think you definitely need.

Speaker 8 (09:27):
Some depth there, or you need an alternative plan, alternative plan.
Granted he's saying I'm ready for this. I don't think
that's all of the coaches thinking in that respect. I
think they have a competition on their hand.

Speaker 10 (09:39):
It is a competition, and that's something that Christian Parker
and Brian Schottenheimer have pretty much put out there on
the table. So this is from Demo's POV. Demo feels
like he has played the position in his football career.
He can play the position at the NFL level. And
he's basically planting his flag. That's Demo planing Agent zero
planting his.

Speaker 8 (09:57):
Flag, and he sounds unequivocal about it. He does as
he's as he should, as he should.

Speaker 4 (10:01):
But anybody physically seeing him, now, what's his what's his
frame look like at this point.

Speaker 9 (10:05):
As far as mask or Yeah, he's he's a statue man.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
Yeah, he's tall. It looks great. He's tall. He has
the mask to do what I I I.

Speaker 10 (10:15):
He will probably toss on another five pounds muscle, which man,
she needs to show up at camp with ten more
pounds than he has now.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
Agreed, but he has five to six weeks to do.

Speaker 10 (10:25):
It, five five or six weeks to do it. So
but to Josh's points, this is this is an open competition.
It's good, right, so will.

Speaker 4 (10:34):
I mean you want somebody who's confident, you want somebody
who's vocal, you want somebody who who's a who's a
leader of man? I mean those he checks all those boxes.
I think the only question mark that you can put
over his head is the availability health wise size. Can
he handle the the demands of that position in this.

Speaker 9 (10:51):
New scheme right exactly?

Speaker 10 (10:53):
It's wide open right now. But I love the most confidence, Hey, man,
go get it.

Speaker 9 (10:58):
So you would expect him to say any list if
you want to go get.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
A question out with that in mind, Okay, with that
in mind, understanding who's available at the linebacker position. Kind
of playing musical chairs right now in terms of who's
going to be where, because I know everybody's mindset was
that Demo is going to be on the outside like
he's always been, right being able to go out there,
run guys down sideline, the sideline if you put him
in a middle linebacker, that ability those not the ability
doesn't go away, but the responsibilities to run sideline. The

sideline kind of go away, right, He's more so manning
down the middle, going downhill, dropping into the middle third.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Of the field.

Speaker 4 (11:31):
Do you believe that the Cowboys, with them and with
the intent of him possibly playing Mike linebacker, still need
to go out and try to find a veteran linebacker.

Speaker 6 (11:39):
Yes, okay, absolutely, that would be the number one thing
still on my list. Absolutely of what they still need
to do. Doesn't mean they can't get by without it.
They can probably get by without it, but you could
thrive with it.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
And that's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to thrive.

Speaker 6 (11:55):
They can get by doing what they're doing right now,
but you're not the way that you want.

Speaker 9 (12:00):
To, at least this team so far with shot under
the helm.

Speaker 8 (12:05):
I don't think this is a team that's going to
get by like in the respect of like, I don't
think they're settled with that.

Speaker 9 (12:10):
I don't think they want to get by.

Speaker 8 (12:12):
I think they want to emphasize as much as they
possibly can and give themselves the best advantage humanly possible.
And then you have Christian Parker, who also wants to
make a name for himself too. He's already done that
within these walls.

Speaker 9 (12:23):
But now you have a guy.

Speaker 8 (12:24):
That's genuinely instituting a whole different makeup of what the
Stalls Cowy's defense can be. He needs somebody that he
can rely on that is unquestionably the leader of the
defense in that respect as your middle linebacker. I think
he already has one in Caleb Downs for the back end,
but now, I mean, you got to solidify that as
much as humanly possible.

Speaker 9 (12:45):
You have to do whatever it takes.

Speaker 10 (12:46):
Yeah, I do agree, and I will say when it
comes to the question of Demo's availability, there are levels
to this. So when you talk about Deron Bland's availability,
you're talking about a nagging issue with his foot. I'm
very concerned about Darron Bland, but when it comes to Demo,
it's kind of a bad situation. So in the preseason,
his rookie preseason, you plant wrong, you tell your aco,

what can you do?

Speaker 1 (13:09):
You get back?

Speaker 10 (13:11):
You're having a Pro Bowl calible year and alignman, it
was I believe, rolls up on the left side of
you and blows out your tendons again. So it's to me,
it's not that he's injury prone. He just had a
string of bad luck. So I say that to say
I believe that Demo's availability question is more of a
smaller question mark than say like a Deran Bland, which

is like a huge question mark.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
They're both still question marks.

Speaker 10 (13:36):
Demo still has to stay on the field and prove
that he can, but he's not having these nagging issues
that are just you know, wrong place, wrong time type thing.

Speaker 6 (13:44):
I guess the one thing I'd ask in rebuttal to
that is with Demarvin Overshown, what was his skill set?
What did he do best in terms of fundamentals. I
know what you was Sayidy downhill, if you need him
to be quick, first step and explosion right. The question
there is because he sustained these injuries. I know that

the injuries are semi freak accident type of things. But
can he still do what he does best at a
high level? That's my question. I think he can. I
think he'll be fine. The medical, the training staff, all
of that is certainly in place to give him the
best opportunity and the best resources to do so.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
But that's football too.

Speaker 6 (14:23):
When you're asked to drive a Ferrari, you can't do
it with a little bit of a flat tire.

Speaker 10 (14:27):
But real quick and he's out of the brace. So
I don't think that's tires flatting.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
Okay, that's good. Yeah, now Mary, he congratulations.

Speaker 10 (14:35):
Congratulations to them and still showed up to men. He said,
he said the honeymoon can say. Yeah, he said that.
What he said, his wife understands. The honeymoon can't wait.
He has worked.

It's got plenty of time. The next couple of weeks
they'll be just fine.

Speaker 6 (14:48):
Uh. There was one question Floyd in the chat said,
who's not playing? If you bring in a veteran who
is not playing in the like the linebacker spots.

Speaker 10 (14:57):
With a fantastic question, who's not playing? De Winters is
going to play rookie Barhm, he's going to get his
off ball? Uh, snaps Demo. If Demo's not playing, Shamar
is going to get his.

Speaker 8 (15:12):
He's honestly chamorro my odd man out in that respect,
because you have and I'm blinking on his name, there's
another linebacker there who I think is more special teams
than anything.

Speaker 9 (15:21):
Barren, I think you would be.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
Everybody has a goes on notice. If you add a
veteran linebacker, depending on the caliber of veteran linebacker.

Speaker 10 (15:27):
If is not on the field and the veteran linebacker
is here, assuming that you trade it for an impact
guy who may or may not be staring at palm
trees right now. I think Chamar he's shown enough last year,
not just on special tams.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
Yet you do not you do not stop his progress.

Speaker 10 (15:43):
I think you then look at bar him for the
time that over shown is hold on not taking him
off of the field about that, but putting more of
his reps at the edge, which is what they're going
to plan to do anyway, as far as mix him in.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
He's a juggernaut exactly.

Speaker 10 (15:59):
So I'm not saying take him off the field, but
I think in this situation we're talking about, demo is
not available. I'm not stopping Shamar James's progress. I traded
for d Winters. I want Jayshaun Barham on the field.
But I also know that in the scouting of him,
I already had a plan to get him snaps off
the edge as well. I think he's the one that's

most readily you just drop down to the line and
then there frees up the spot for like a Shamar James,
so you don't sacrifice his progress.

That's just my take on it. Fair.

It makes a lot of sense there too.

It makes sense there is a report out there that
the uh it's a minor thing, so I think we'll
be all right. But Tom Pella Serouh NFL Network insider
just tweeted that the Cowboys are signing UFL offensive lineman
Chris Glazier.

So he was we're not back into the Cowboys starts
signing UFL players.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
We're not officially back until that happened in the way.

Speaker 6 (16:54):
He's twenty siven no man, you never know, twenty six
years old out of Virginia. He was under it in
twenty twenty two. He actually spent some time on the
practice squad here back in twenty twenty three, and then
bounced around between the Jets and the Bears, and then
most recently played for the Columbus Aviators in the UFL.

The pass he's only twenty six, like their class guard.

Yeah, he's only twenty six, and he gives them a
little bit more competition in that mid to lower range
of the interior offensive line, and they really are trying
to figure out some things on the offensive line. You
let brock Hoffman walking free agency. You did choose to
keep the tender and keep TJ pass, but it hurts
because we can't.

Really now just a good opportunity for him though. Yeah, absolutely,
Rednight with Mike McCall whatever. You know, I didn't want

questions in that respect, where it's like, what questions do
we what players do we have? What gaps do we
need to fill going into training team? That's obviously what
a big part of Mini Camp's going to be for them.

things like that. So when you combined both of those things,

it contributed to what you would say, it's a down
season for Rashawn Gary. But if you pluck that season
out and apply that to most other names in the league,
you'd say, hey, that was a solid season. So it's
contextually speaking, I think that you put him in Christian Parkerson,
you put him alongside Kenny Clark, and then of course,
guess who else is on this line.

I think that with all of that being said, I
think Rashaun Gary, who also has a very big chip
on his shoulder because he hears everybody saying yeah, he

and they're saying, oh, well, why do.

we will have this conversation in hindsight next year and

of blocking up front. Of the mistakes happens at the
offensive line, he can fill the gap.

Joined in twenty nineteen, worked all the way through the
twenty twenty six campaign. I grew up here. I became
a husband here. I married my wife back in twenty
twenty three, and then became a father. While I was here,
I had three triplets that we were born in February
of twenty twenty four, I've grown up a lot. I mean,

some of you have been on the show and in
the comments section and been around since I started in
twenty twenty and I appreciate you being patient with me
trying to find my footing. And it was always a
dream job for me to be here. I grew up
in Waco. I watched the Cowboys growing up with my dad.

I went to church.

Speaker 6 (49:12):
When I came to the University of North Texas, I
came to church at Valley Ranch Baptist Church, and I
thought it was the coolest thing ever that I could
look across the parking lot and just see a glimpse
of the building at Valley Ranch, just see like the
top portion of like the step stool. I always thought
that was the coolest thing. So to be able to
call this place home and to be able to call

these people family has just been the highlight of my
career and it's something that I will never ever forget.
And when we'd say talking Cowboys faanily, we mean it
so much so that I'm not even posting a goodbye
because I've still got a couple weeks left.

But this is our last show. My time is coming

I'm excited to share what I have moving forward very soon.
It's an incredible opportunity. I'm super excited about it. It's

league baseball. I was driving across the country. I was

be on air, but would you think about taking that job?
I said, yeah, it's the Cowboys, of course I want
to get in the building. And then Derek and Nick,
those guys upstairs took a chance on me by letting

of shows into the draft show, I got put on
this podcast called Talking Cowboys, and then me and Isaiah

been on it ever since. And we've seen a couple
of renditions of guys like Hekma and Nick Harris and
and John Machoda and Rob Phillips, land Baby, all sorts
of different voices and faces that have been on the show.
And then Matt Patrick in the fold. We have Josh
in the fold, and it's just been so much fun.
I have a blast every day coming into work with

that's trying to find it so and some of the
other I think you split with the Eagles.

I've said it from the beginning, the way that this
off if you can keep the majority of your offense
together and you can keep most of them healthy, I
think your offensive line is going to take a step forward.

I think your running back room, if you can.

Solidify that and be okay, I feel much more confident
about the offense. And then if the defense is just serviceable,
not even good, just serviceable, get the middle of the pack,
get them into the low twenties, then I think you're
winning ten games automatically just by how good the offense
is going to be, win them a couple extra possessions.
I've been nothing but impressed with Christian Parker and what

he's done. Yeah, I've been nothing but impressed with the
buy in that the coaching staff has gotten from these players,
and the conversations and the focus that has happened in
the building. I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say twelve wins, okay.
I really think they can be something significant in the NFC, which,
in my opinion, I know the Rams are tough, I

know the Seattle Seahawks are tough, and you got both
of them on the schedule.

That's going to be tough.

I still think this team is as good as anybody
in the NFC, and it's going to be impressive to
watch them want or watch them grow because I've believed
in Shoddy from the beginning. I've believed in the message
from the offensive perspective, and we saw that last year.
Now can we marry it with the defense and then
all of a sudden this team.

Is in There was something about that team that you
saw the three games of Ten Days and last season.
There's something that you saw where the defense kind of
took flipped the switch and they connected and they were
serviceable in that respect, and your offense was cooking. That's
Casolina and that is the team you want to carry
over like that glimpse that you saw in those three games.

You want to carry that positivity over into the season,
and especially if the defense is it's more serviceable than
those three games.

If you're going to have an up and down roller coaster,

time to figure it out as well, Like you can't
just automatically be who you are week one.
