I don't always loved being with you. Guys.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Let's throw you into the fire a little bit.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
How about a little news and notes because Cowboys had
some things, Poppa what you got.
Speaker 7 (02:26):
I'm gonna try to do my best for No Sea here.
The biggest thing, A couple of big things happen this weekend.
Scott Simon's the former SMU defensive coordinator as hired as
the inside linebackers coach. So this year's staff a little
bit different in the sense that you've got an inside
linebackers coach and an outside linebackers coach. I was wondering
if they would maybe do defensive line and outside linebackers, edges,
(02:48):
pass rush, whatever you want to call it, and they
are doing that. So SEM's defensive coordinator, Scott Simons will
coach the inside linebackers. That was Dave Borgonzi's job before
he's since gone to Tennessee to join his other And
also what I was talking about earlier, the baldest coaching staff,
which is for the Yeah, yeah Salah, Aaron Whitecotton, Yeah,
(03:09):
Brian Dable, Yeah, I'd like to have an interview with Tennessee.
Speaker 10 (03:11):
Yeah, he's gonna be there.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
They all have great smile hosts of podcasts.
Speaker 10 (03:17):
They do have Gray Miles.
Speaker 7 (03:19):
So Scott Simon's Broyles Award finalist for excuse Me nominee
for the last three seasons that's given each year to
the top assistant coach in college football to twenty four.
Helped SMU reach their first college football Playoff this past year.
They finished fifth in the country in turnovers, fifth and
red zone defense, eighth, in interceptions nineteenth and rushing defense
(03:40):
in twenty third and sack. So this has a new defense,
which was kind of known as he was kind of
known as an offensive program for a long time, especially
because red last year.
Speaker 10 (03:48):
Their offensive play caller. For the most part.
Speaker 7 (03:51):
Over the last few years, though, as they've been an
offensive program, they put up a lot of points. Scott
Simons is a guy that has helped bolster their defense.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
And then the other piece of news, well, I want
to hit on that real quick before we move on.
But Simon specifically, and I said this on one oh
five three the Fan the other day, that's a big
name to have in the coaching world in your hip
pocket as a position coach. Right because of what he
did at SMU as a coordinator, there were places in
(04:21):
college football that may want his services as a head
coach very soon. College football specifically but you now have
him as a position coach in the NFL, which is significant.
And you take a look at the way that Christian
Parker is putting the staff together. There is so much
of an emphasis in the secondary it's not even funny.
And everybody at homes like, oh, but they hired him
(04:41):
as an inside linebackers coach. Yeah, but look at who
he coached at SMU. He coached safeties. He coached two
of the best safeties and I had a couple other
games this year, the safeties were the best part of
their defense, no doubt. In my mind, am I Moses
is a draft prospect that he's kind of a Day
three guy for me, but a pet cat that knows
how to find the football. He helped single handedly beat Miami.
(05:04):
He had two picks of Carson Beck in that game
in Dallas by himself from the safety position. And then
you turn around and of course Miami goes on the
run that they did and ended up in the National
Championship Game. But Simons was a linebackers coach, then he
went to safeties coach, then he was the DC and
safeties coach, and now he's here coaching linebackers.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
So there's an emphasis and.
Speaker 5 (05:25):
A lot of that, and he's going to bring some
coverage ability in his teaching and in his communication with.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
A lot of the linebackers that you have.
Speaker 11 (05:32):
There's sort of a glass half empty, glass half full
situation there too, because you're bringing on a guy who's
going to be desired as a head coach probably in
college or maybe maybe another coordinator position later on in
the NFL, and it may be one of those like
flyer years where it's like he's trying to improve the
defense right here now without the concern of longevity, without
(05:52):
the concern of like he's going to be here in
two or three years, because you need to get the
defense fixed right now.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Yeah, I'm just keep.
Speaker 11 (05:58):
Just keep that in mind.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
Yeah, I'm okay with that. I don't need my linebackers
coach to be here every year. If you need if
he's going to come in and do an incredible job
and then elevate by all means, I'm cool with it.
Speaker 11 (06:08):
My thing is like getting hyped for this guy that
may be gone in a year, but it's like you're
you're focused on what he's going to be able to
prod it to you right now.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
I want to defer to Isaiah here, the player in
the room. But when it comes to position coaches, and
you've spoken on this before, how crucial is a position
coach to the development and the teaching that happens throughout
an offseason, into training camp, and then ultimately in the
regular season.
Speaker 6 (06:32):
It's everything. That's where That's who you spend your time with.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Your coordinator speak to everybody, but your position coaches is
who you rock with literally all day long. That's who
you're in your meetings with. That's who you're doing your
walkthroughs with. That's who you come back to whenever you
come out the huddles. That is your headquarters. It's that,
and then it's your coordinator, and then it's your head coach.
Head coach might say something to you every so often.
Your coordinator might speak to you every so often as well,
(06:56):
whenever you're you know, finishing up a play or he
needs to do something. But overall, majority, I would say
seventy percent of your coaching is coming from your position coach,
if not more so. The relationship is important, The teaching
style is important. Being able to connect with you at
the level that you're at is important, and then benefit
in terms of having a coordinator as a position coach
(07:19):
is obviously gonna help a young defensive coordinator, young first
time defensive coordinator as well.
Speaker 6 (07:23):
Right.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
So I don't know him yet to understand how open
and willing he is to absorb wisdom from others underneath
his awn talking about Parker Parker, Yeah, but to have
those resources underneath you is huge. And I think that
we saw that last year out of Chicago in terms
of what Ben Johnson did you know he had I'm
(07:45):
gonna blank on the name now the officive coordinator for Casey,
Eric Bannamy. He brought him in as a running back coach. Right,
He was a running back coach for Chicago last year. Now,
does Ben Johnson need anybody to help him with his
game planning?
Speaker 8 (08:00):
Know?
Speaker 6 (08:00):
But does it help to have somebody who has a
great offensive mind? Yep?
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Maybe he sees something that you don't see when you're
watching a film. Maybe he says, hey, let's throw this
in there as well, or I've done this in the
past and net help. So having somebody who not only
has the ability to coach a position and communicate properly,
but also having the wisdom of being able to facilitate
entire units helps whenever you have that on your staff.
Speaker 5 (08:25):
When you look at this staff, Tommy across the board
that Christian Parker has put together, for the most part
is kind of a young, refreshing look of young hungry coaches.
It's very different than what we've seen in the past
couple of ten years with Zimmer and Eberflus.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Not to say that they're.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
Tied together, but their staffs differently were similar. Right where
Christian Parker, it feels like there's a lot of young
hungry coming up from college, coming from a position coach
or an assistant position coach in certain areas around the
NFL to prove themselves, kind of like what Josh was
talking about. Do you like that in the staff that's
(09:04):
coming together. I know it's early, they're not playing games yet,
but do you like the way that it's kind of
been constructed in a different way?
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Right?
Speaker 3 (09:12):
Sure? Yeah.
Speaker 7 (09:13):
I mean, at the end of the day, this is
all going to be judged on wins and losses and performance,
right it doesn't you know, the way they construct it.
Speaker 10 (09:19):
If they don't win, it doesn't necessarily matter.
Speaker 7 (09:22):
But I think what's interesting about this is I think
back to when Brian Schotenheimer was hiring his offensive staff,
and this is.
Speaker 10 (09:28):
Reminding me a lot of that process.
Speaker 7 (09:30):
You're seeing a mixture of guys who have coached in
the league, who have been in the league for a
long time, and an influx of younger guys who were
at the college level, like a junior Adams or Connor Riley.
This is kind of the same thing that we're seeing
now with this defensive staff. Where Christian Parker and the
Cowboys are plucking from the NFL, they're plucking from the
college level. So they're looking at a bunch of different
places to and a bunch of different experience levels, guys
(09:53):
who have been NFL defensive coordinators or NFL their colleges
of defensive coordinators and putting them all together. So you
kind of have this meshing of minds, and that can
be beneficial because you get so many different viewpoints. But
at the end of the day, this is a first
time coordinator in Christian Parker, and he's got to figure out, Okay,
what is my identity, what do I want my defense
(10:14):
to look like? And push all those thoughts together and
mend it into what he sees is his vision.
Speaker 10 (10:20):
For this defense.
Speaker 7 (10:21):
That's the biggest question that's going to be I have
to be answered by this Cowboys team going forward. But
at the very least at his disposal, he's got a
good group of minds that he can bounce ideas off
of and concepts that he can mesh together. Now it's
just a question of one can he mesh together into
a full identity for his defense and two can they
get the personnel to execute it?
Speaker 6 (10:42):
Do we know his personality? And Christian Parker, this is.
Speaker 10 (10:45):
An excellent, excellent people person.
Speaker 7 (10:47):
Everybody who a teacher a teacher. He relates with young
players very well, everybody who's a disciplinarian.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
Is he a high energy guy?
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Is he?
Speaker 10 (10:56):
I would say he's a little bit of everything.
Speaker 7 (10:58):
High energy guy. He's everybody we've talked to about him,
raise about him, Players love him.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
He's a player's coach.
Speaker 10 (11:04):
Yeah, players coach.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
I asked that.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Because and we know this right, We've heard this a
thousand times, but it is true. Your your unit is
going to be a reflection of your of your coordinator's personality.
So I need to know who he is as a
person and energy wise. Understand he's a teacher and all
those kinds of things. But personality wise, you're going to
see that show up on the field for the defense, right,
(11:28):
So I want to learn. I want to hear him
talk more. I want to see him present more. I
want to see who he is in that setting. And
we'll obviously get a chance later on when he hits
the practice field, you'll get a better understanding. But that
is such an important part when you think about the
great offenses, when you think about the great defense, it's
always a reflection of the person that's calling the place.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
I completely agree with you.
Speaker 5 (11:48):
I think the best way I could describe it without
seeing him on the practice field in person.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Keep that in mind, I would say smart.
Speaker 5 (11:56):
And locked in, which is just kind of a I
feel like that's a cop out answer. But he's very intentional,
very he's communicative, he's energetic, all of that kind of
like what Tommy said, it's a mixture of a couple
different things. But I would say the number one and
number two things that stand out are his intelligence with
the way that he's able to put together and teach,
(12:18):
and then you've got the locked in ability the intensity
that he coaches with which I think if that if
those are two things that you can radiate to this defense,
then I'll count me in.
Speaker 6 (12:29):
I'm all for it.
Speaker 11 (12:29):
And not to mention that the coach exc he's put together.
You guys mentioned it. Like you said, they're young and
hungry and wholeful of guys that are that are able
to communicate well to the players, communicate these complex defenses.
Maybe to players that just had a lot of communication
issues last year, you know that maybe they weren't able
to get that message across because they couldn't relate to
(12:51):
them on a certain level. And granted that's on the
players too. You have to be able to regardless of
who's telling you what the scheme is going to be.
You have to know it like the back of your hand, right,
But at least now it's a little more relatable to them, hopefully.
I'm just excited to hear from Christian Parker for the
first time because we have not there's been no availability.
I think that the ice storm really ruined that opportunity
for us and hopefully comes up here pretty soon.
Speaker 5 (13:12):
If if you're looking at Christian Parker and you're asking
what is the scheme, what is his personality like, and
things like that, we can give you an answer here
just based off of what we've seen and what we've heard.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
I've seen it from from far away.
Speaker 5 (13:27):
But even whatever happens when he finally takes over as
the defensive coordinator and he's finally out on the practice
field and in a game situation, it may it may
be new to Christian Parker. He may not know what
his personality as a coordinator is or what he's going
to do from a scheme standpoint, because he's we've we've
heard them say, oh, he's going to take principles from
Vic Fangio. Oh, he's going to take principles from some
(13:48):
of these other guys that he's been underneath.
Speaker 6 (13:50):
Before he's going to figure himself out.
Speaker 5 (13:52):
He's going to have to find what puzzle pieces fit
in his mentality is.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
That's thought process, And that's the only thing that gives
me a little bit of hesitation in regards to excitement. Sure,
because while figuring out who you are as simultaneously trying
to establish a culture and an identity while teaching others
underneath you to embody and teach what you're trying to
(14:19):
push forward, right, So it's almost like I don't want
to I don't want to put anything on him. I
don't know the man, right, but I know in anybody
even listening as if you're trying to figure out who
you are, if you are leading other people while figuring
out who you are, is gonna take some patience because
you're gonna move the needle multiple times, and as you're
(14:41):
trying to say, Hey, Josh, I need to get on
board with this, and you see it and you're like,
I don't like the way that's coming. Hey Kyle, we're
gonna change things up and we're gonna go this direction. Now,
it's going to require some patients from these coaches now
that are underneath his umbrella to understand that he's going
to be moving things around and changing things and maybe
what he initially comes out with and starts trying to
teach isn't what's gonna necessarily stay that way, right, So.
Speaker 6 (15:04):
Understand it's a lot.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
So I'm just telling people to have a little bit
of pump the brakes a little bit. Yeah, it's gonna
take time, and I mention we mentioned this a couple
of weeks ago, but also understand that his philosophies may
change throughout this offseason going into the season as.
Speaker 6 (15:21):
He realizes that what he thought about right and.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
Where he foresaw isn't necessarily the way in which he
truly wanted to pan out, So he's gonna have to
make adjustments.
Speaker 11 (15:30):
Well, who better to lead him through that than his
head coach and Brian Schott, Sure, who just came off
of his first Worldwood season as a head coach, who
had a lot of ups and downs and was still
able to build a culture, his culture within the team
while having ups and downs of a regular NFL season
with a personnel that you didn't necessarily build on your
own and a defense that was almost entirely not your identity, right,
(15:52):
you were just kind of going along with it, so
you can get through your first year and really figure out, Okay,
this is what we're going to do.
Speaker 7 (15:58):
What would seem to be more problematic is if, to
Isaiah's point, he comes in with the mindset of, Okay,
this is what we're gonna run, this is how we're
going to do it, and you can't adapt. If you
can't adapt in today's NFL, you're cooked.
Speaker 10 (16:12):
You You just can't. You just have to do it.
Speaker 7 (16:14):
But I think it'd be silly to expect Christian Parker
to come in and all of a sudden top ten defense.
I just don't think that's going to happen for Dallas.
But I think that if you can recognize that this is,
you know, something that may take some growing pains initially.
And here's the great part for Christian Parker, he has
the best job in the world because it is going
to be very difficult to be worse than this twenty
(16:35):
twenty five crew. I'm sorry, but it really is. So
if you show any sign of improvement, that is an
improvement for the team and you buy yourself another year.
So you know, we talk a lot about the how
many coordinates has been four or five in the last
five I don't think that's going to be the pace
for Christian Parker, just because.
Speaker 10 (16:53):
The bar is literally that low.
Speaker 7 (16:56):
And you know, he's got a chance to he has
a chance to build something up and build stability.
Speaker 5 (17:03):
And if he's good enough and this goes from the
worst defense in twenty twenty five into a top five defense,
then it might be five court.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
It probably will, you know, like.
Speaker 10 (17:13):
Hey, it might be one of the best coaching jobs ever.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
Yeah, who knows. But all right, what was the other
piece of news?
Speaker 10 (17:18):
And notes that you, yeah, this is this is great
for our guy, Nate Newton. This is really cool.
Speaker 7 (17:24):
He received a official pardon from President Donald Trump and
Jerry Jones got to deliver the news to him over
the weekend, and Nate talked a little bit to Nick Eatman.
He said, quote, me and mister Jones have had a
lot of talks, some good, some not so good. He
tells it like it is and he said, you've been
(17:44):
pardoned from the President. I just sat there for about
thirty seconds to a minute. I was stunned, but I
told him you tell the President thank you very much.
Speaker 6 (17:52):
Man.
Speaker 10 (17:52):
I think I speak for all of us when I
say that.
Speaker 7 (17:54):
You know, Nate is such a bright presence around this
building and he has done so much to help all
of us, and you know, uplift the mood in this
building and just an excellent human being who is has
made the most of his second chance and is just
a fantastic person to be around. We all love him
in this building. Congratulations Nate. I think we're all super
happy for it.
Speaker 6 (18:14):
Buddy.
Speaker 3 (18:15):
Yeah, we love Nate.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
I don't know Isaiah can speak to this too, just
because we get to spend we've spent one hundred game
days now in the studio watching football with Nate. It
is one of the more enjoyable moments of my entire year,
and it is one of the more beneficial to my
career in general, because I've learned so much from Nate.
I've learned how to handle yourself. He's He's stopped me
(18:37):
a couple of times. Isaiah has been around it where
I get either heated or I'm upset at something. And
I mean, he's kind of that cool, calming shoulder. Now
you talk about turning, turning a new leaf and and
really reshaping your life, and he found he found his faith,
He found himself in it, and and it really is
cool to see somebody he if if you have no
(18:58):
matter what your political affiliation is, this is not politics,
We're not talking politics. Whatever it is. Nate Newton deserves
that type of pardon. He won thousand percent deserves it
from seeing him first hand for the past seven years.
He is one of the best individuals in the building. So,
like you said, Tommy Well said, on your side, I
couldn't be happier. I literally ran into the room and
(19:21):
yelled it to my wife, and she scared her for
a second, I was like, Nate got a pardon. I
was like, this is awesome. It felt like my favorite
sports team and just won a championship. Because I couldn't
feel more better than or much better than I do
for the guy and what he deserved.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
To this point, Yep, that's my dude. I love I
love him big Nate Dog. One of these guys just
gonna repeat what they said. Great human being deserves everything,
deserves to not have restrictions on life. And to his
point that he's that he mentioned I think on one
of the DLLL or whatever the name of that show is,
he was talking about his grandkids, right, that's what his
(19:55):
focus is now, Like he talks about putting money in
his grandkids accounts and say money for college. Like his
focus is ensuring that they see him in the light
that he that he envisions. And and the Internet is
the Internet. You'll be able to go back and see
everything right, but at the end of the day, you'll
be able to see that he has the same freedoms
(20:16):
as everybody else has.
Speaker 7 (20:17):
He should And one more quick thing, I hope, I
really do hope this means that we see his name
in the ring honor soon think that.
Speaker 10 (20:24):
I hope his grandkids get to experience.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
That'd be really.
Speaker 6 (20:26):
Cool that I would do freaking cartwheels.
Speaker 11 (20:28):
Yeah, yeah, there's no one more deserving the.
Speaker 10 (20:32):
Cart wheels with y.
Speaker 5 (20:33):
Yeah, that would be the coolest thing ever. Congratulations name,
We love everybody, And we'll see again, uh here on
hanging with the Boys within the next couple days. I
don't know what day they go on in the off season.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Thursday, we'll see. We'll see him on hanging with the
Boys on Thursday. All right.
Speaker 5 (20:47):
When we come back on Talking Cowboys, we're gonna start
breaking down, position by position, what the Cowboys need this
off season? What do they currently have? What is the
next step? Do you attack it in the free agencies
side of things or the draft. We're and talk about
a couple of positions today, starting with the defensive line.
Oh no, linebackers first line. I couldn't remember what I
(21:08):
put in the rundown linebackers first. When we return with
more Talking Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
How's it going. You see that Cowboys game?
Speaker 3 (21:15):
Oh, I watched.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
I've been seeing some good things totally. They have some talent,
you have some great talent, and they got some fight.

I did.
Speaker 5 (23:57):
I mean, like yeah, likeway that just be yeah.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
Wash it. Throw some coffee in there, get over it.
Speaker 11 (24:07):
Hot pressure washing, you know, coffee material.
Speaker 5 (24:11):
It's fine, it's hot anyways, it burns off water, no
big deal.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
They used to make it in a in a campfire,
all right.
Speaker 11 (24:19):
There was meet someone that has the coffee pot that
they never rints out like aroun all the way through.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
Yeah, it's supposed to call.
Speaker 11 (24:25):
A cowboy coffee.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
I'm good, dude.
Speaker 11 (24:29):
Real cowboy coffee is black coffee.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
The official coffee of the cowboys. That's why it's the
only cowboys.
Speaker 8 (24:37):
You know.
Speaker 11 (24:37):
What like a I can't say the name, so a
breakfast establishment, a diner if you will. And they had
the old mugs that have like the the on the inside.
You could see like all of the years of coffee
that have been.
Speaker 4 (24:50):
I went to the location by your house a couple
a couple of weeks ago with the family, and I
bought a T shirt and I was mad that it
wasn't a game day because I wanted my temper.
Speaker 5 (25:01):
Yeah, you gotta wait until next year for that, so mad.
Speaker 3 (25:05):
That's a bummer.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
All right, let's talk about these positions, going position by position.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
We're gonna do this over the next couple of.
Speaker 5 (25:10):
Weeks and kind of hit the the number one spots
of need, but also some not so spots of need,
just to address what these positions are and what the
Cowboys currently have at the spot.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
We're gonna start with linebacker.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
Let's do it.
Speaker 5 (25:23):
Tommy, you had a funny off air comment earlier where
you said, uh, my first question was what do they.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
Have at linebacker?
Speaker 5 (25:31):
To address it, and your answer was not a lot,
not a lot of linebacker.
Speaker 10 (25:38):
Yeah, I think that.
Speaker 7 (25:39):
You know, when you look at this team and the
fact that Tamar James I think was their leading tackler
or second leading tackler, maybe behind Kenneth Murray.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
Correct one.
Speaker 7 (25:50):
Oh okay, I thought he'd beat him.
Speaker 10 (25:53):
That's that's interesting. That's interesting to say the leader.
Speaker 7 (25:57):
I think that's you know, credititional James a fifth round
pick for being that impactful in terms of statistically, but.
Speaker 10 (26:06):
You can't count on that.
Speaker 7 (26:07):
And I think he leaves you got a lot of
what he had in college, where he would fly to
the ball really well, but sometimes he'd overpursue and mistack that.
Speaker 6 (26:14):
Don't you do it what I do? I like James.
Speaker 10 (26:16):
I'm not saying I don't lie. Dislike you.
Speaker 6 (26:18):
Watch it, buddy.
Speaker 11 (26:19):
I think in the right system he's gonna be a
lot well.
Speaker 7 (26:21):
I think it winter with the right he is a hitter,
I think, But I still think that there's work to
be done there and I don't think that. There's just
a lot of question marks that position. I think the
biggest one you got is to marveon Overshown, who has
been injured the last couple of years, and now he's
going into a contract here.
Speaker 10 (26:38):
So if he if he balls out.
Speaker 7 (26:41):
He has plays full seventeen games, he's fully healthy this season,
do you feel confident enough to pay him? That's that's
a big question. I wouldn't feel good about it either.
You know you've got marys Lee found that room who
twenty twenty four, towards the end of the year, you
said to yourself, Okay, it seems like he's starting to
carve out a role and put things together. Twenty twenty five,
it's where is this guy? And he one couldn't find
(27:02):
the field in two when he was on the field,
just didn't make the proper plays.
Speaker 11 (27:07):
He was not in Eberfluce's favor for whatever reason.
Speaker 7 (27:09):
Yeah, I think I think he is not typical kind
of linebackers and Matt Eberflus has liked in the past,
those stockier, bigger guys who just run and hit.
Speaker 10 (27:20):
I think he was.
Speaker 7 (27:21):
He's really good as a blitzer, and I think that
that's where he should carve himself out of rob And
then you got Kenneth Murray, who was I think you
can you've seen enough tweets and.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
TikTok since he's still under contract.
Speaker 10 (27:35):
Yeah, he's free agent.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
He's free agent.
Speaker 11 (27:38):
Him and Jack Sanborn rights Jack Samuarin. I don't think
they'll be coming back.
Speaker 10 (27:42):
I would doubt it.
Speaker 7 (27:44):
Samburan was a guy that I didn't think was that
bad in Chicago, but for whatever reason, and of course
injuries as well, just didn't work in Dallas. And then
they trade for Logan Wilson in the middle of the
season and there was a week where they straight up
forgot to put him on the field or just didn't
think to put them on the field. So it was
a it was a lot of moving parts, and it's
(28:04):
it's a room that it's no wonder when we're on
the draft show and we'll talk about it here in
the next hour or so, that linebacker is one of
those positions that you feel like is a big need
that you could address in the draft or in free agency,
because it's clear that they need some help in that room.
Speaker 5 (28:18):
If you are going to see a switch between a
four to three and a three four, right, you're going
to see three down linemen instead of the four. Does
that change the roles that you see in the current
linebacker room?
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Yeah, quite a quite a bit, right hit change your
entire defensive roster completely.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
Yeah, But if you're going to do that, this is
kind of the time to do it because you don't
have a foundation to late with, right, it would be laid.
Speaker 11 (28:47):
Down, and you have the defensive tackles to make a
three four work.
Speaker 6 (28:50):
Absolutely, you do you do.
Speaker 4 (28:56):
To put an emphasis on the secondary so much I
I'm hard fetch to see them go to a three four.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
You don't think so.
Speaker 5 (29:03):
No, even with hiring an outside linebackers coach and and
an inside linebackers coach.
Speaker 11 (29:08):
I think it's just them preaching multiples.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
Do you think so yet?
Speaker 2 (29:10):
Again?
Speaker 6 (29:10):
Yeah, multiples is fine.
Speaker 4 (29:12):
Three four is a very specific scheme, very specific scheme,
and it requires very specific position groups in terms of
those outside linebackers. Like it's a very particular personnel that
you have to have. It's not like it's interchangeable with
your three four I mean your four to three guys
and your three four guys.
Speaker 6 (29:29):
It's just it's not you need.
Speaker 4 (29:30):
If you're gonna have a three four, you need the
big fellows in an insight, which you already said that
you have. And if you're playing a three to four,
your stand up ends, okay, your stand up ends are
six four to two sixty two seventy. Yeah, is not
They're not two twenty, they're not two twenty five. It's
just not right because what they're being asked to do
(29:52):
is literally funnel everything in. Like as a three to
four outside linebacker, which is really a stand up defensive end.
These are big human beings that are tasked with capping
off the end of the line of scrimmage. There they
are literally the bottleneck. Hey, everything stays inside, nothing gets outside.
So that means those guys are literally their job is
(30:12):
to take on offensive tackles and tight ends.
Speaker 6 (30:14):
Yeah, that's their role.
Speaker 4 (30:16):
So your current personnel at linebacker doesn't allow for that.
And if you're going to go get guys, now, you're
literally you're hoarding defensive ends. And last time I check,
you don't have a bunch of those.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
No, not that you feel confident that anyway.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
So, I mean, you're you're talking about going if you
were to become a primarily three four defense, you're talking
about going and acquiring five six guys that are six
four six' five two hundred and sixty plus.
Speaker 6 (30:46):
Pounds you get big.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
Guys, yeah like you have to go literally go get
all these. Guys and last, time those guys aren't just laying. Around, No,
no that's hard to.
Speaker 10 (30:54):
Find and you've Got.
Speaker 5 (30:55):
Clowney you've got Your David clowney. In that's kind of your.
Guy that's if you resign. Him he's also, yeah.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
He's a free.
Speaker 6 (31:01):
Agent BUT i mean you would need to go Find
James houston.
Speaker 5 (31:03):
Is probably undersized for that He's donovan has rock who
is definitely under definitely un. Size for, that you loved
it and rest in, peace Marshn neland you would have
loved to have him in that spot because he's a
bigger body defensive.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
End he's a guy that.
Speaker 5 (31:17):
Can be an edge rusher and could have stopped the
run and could have been that outside linebacker.
Speaker 4 (31:20):
Spot it would have been. Perfect But donovan as a.
Rock if he puts on twenty, pounds maybe he could
be your. Guy he could be a. GUY i don't
know about your. Guy you can want him to put
on twenty.
Speaker 3 (31:32):
POUNDS i don't.
Speaker 6 (31:33):
KNOW i think he has to has to put on
at least.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
Ten regardless of the. Change, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 7 (31:39):
Regardless let me ask you this as a fan who's
also curious of your perception of just the game.
Speaker 10 (31:45):
Of football and how it's. Evolving if you have what's.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
That, so you're not a, fan you're a.
Speaker 6 (31:49):
Reporter it's a fan of.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Football.
Speaker 7 (31:52):
Okay if you have the defensive tackle personnel That dallas,
has where they're so big and so, powerful do you
feel like you can have some of those undersized guys
and push them out a little bit more and just
let them pin their ears. Back if those three guys
take up as a three four, four, yeah, no you
don't think they can go five man put two pen
(32:14):
your ears.
Speaker 10 (32:14):
Back pass, rushers no Item, no Because.
Speaker 4 (32:17):
I'm down down and. Around If i'm, Offense i'm down,
Down i'm taking my. Tackle i'm cracking on the on
the five, technique and Then i'm Getting i'm pulling my
guard And i'm getting out on your defensive end slash outside,
linebacker And i'm kicking him out and then we're off and.
Speaker 6 (32:29):
Running.
Speaker 11 (32:30):
Mmm it's if you're set the, edge regardless.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
If You're if you can't set the edge in a three,
four you're not running a three. Four it's the reason
why every, three every successful three four has had bigger.
Guys they're literally defensive ends that are standing up like
old school defensive, end not the new Age i'm talking,
about like The Miles, garretts the, clownies like these massive
human beings right that can set the, edge and three
(32:53):
hundred and thirty pounders can't move them because that's what
you're asking them to.
Speaker 6 (32:56):
Do you're asking me to come off.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
The, edge put my one hand in your hold you,
there and make sure that no running back can get
outside of.
Speaker 6 (33:03):
ME i can't do that two hundred and thirty.
Speaker 4 (33:06):
Pounds WHEN i was, playing WHEN i played tight end
at the end of my, CAREER i was playing In
jacksonville With Mercedes. LEWIS i would Kick Mercedes, lewis but
in the weight room and everybody else in the weight,
ROOM i was a weightroom. STRAW i was weightroom, strong
BUT i was two hundred and forty pounds and they
put my hand in the. GROUND i was supposed to
be playing hybrid tight end Like hernandez, right that was that.
Age but they would put me in a wing position
(33:27):
AND I mercedes would be at line of. Scrimmage i'd
be in a wing set and they would have me
go try to crack back on these three four defensive defensive.
LINEMEN i couldn't do. IT i physically couldn't do. IT
i was strong enough to do, it BUT.
Speaker 6 (33:43):
I couldn't do.
Speaker 4 (33:44):
IT i had the, WHEEL i had the, DETERMINATION i
had the. Angles when they're three hundred pounds And i'm two,
forty it doesn't matter what the weight room.
Speaker 6 (33:52):
Says it just. Doesn't physics alone just says no. Play
you can't do your.
Speaker 4 (33:56):
Job so Like that's one of the reasons why it
just didn't work out for me, there AND i was
done BECAUSE i couldn't do what was being asked to me.
Speaker 5 (34:02):
Physically so in order to make a switch to three,
four because it feels like there's a large number Of
cowboys fans that are convinced that it's going to be
a three to, Four i'm kind of with. YOU i
don't think it's going to. BE i think it's going
to be more of a. Multiple it's going to be
a four to three and we're going to see a
lot of that as the base and then some od manfronts.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
Here situation.
Speaker 5 (34:22):
Situational with that being, said where do you feel like
the need is at? LINEBACKER i don't want to necessarily
talk defensive ends, yet but where is the linebacker? Need
is it free agency veterans or do you need young
talent that you can build on and develop at?
Speaker 11 (34:37):
Linebacker, well, CURRENTLY i would say free agency BECAUSE i
think there are proven guys that are headed to free
agency that you can count on because you currently have
no true coverage eraser if you look at the targets
of the guys that you currently. Have this is Disregarding
murray And sanborn who probably won't be, back like we.
Said But Shamar james thirty one, targets twenty eight, catches
(34:57):
Over shown twelve, targets ten, Catches Leah fou eleven, targets ten,
Catches wilson thirteen, catches thirteen, targets nine. Catches that is
just a very high percentage pass completion against these guys
because they are running to the, play they're not, diagnosing
and they're not sticking in the.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Pocket.
Speaker 11 (35:14):
Right my thing with getting a new linebackers that you
want somebody that is established as a guy that has,
longevity a guy that is, stable a guy that can
diagnose plays and is, available so all of those things
just get just grab that guy. Right there are names
out there and you would have to really fight for
him because they could get franchise tag who, Knows but
(35:37):
at least for me right, now you want a guy
that's established in the. League you had a chance for
that With Bobby wagner a few years, ago didn't take. It,
ISAIAH i will, say was one to really champion that
and he played pretty. Well SO i think you want
to get an established in free agency because they still work.
Speaker 6 (35:52):
Out, yeah those.
Speaker 11 (35:53):
Linebackers you want somebody that has that that, wisdom that
intelligence for your diagnosing.
Speaker 4 (35:58):
Play understand this as you're AND i stand on the.
Table i've said this. BEFORE i believe that linebacker is
the easiest position on the defense to go get a
established player free. Agency so that's not the diminished. Position
that's just to say that it's easier to plug a
linebacker into your system than it is any other position
group on the. Defense corners and safeties cost a. Premium
(36:25):
it makes more, sense especially, corners especially, corners, Right so
it makes more sense to go draft those guys and
develop those guys than it is to try to go grab.
Speaker 6 (36:33):
One of those guys in free agency and think that
that's going to change your entire.
Speaker 5 (36:36):
Defense AND i think the reason why they are a
premium and why they are as expensive is that it's
rare that those draft and developed guys ARE nfl ready.
Speaker 3 (36:44):
Immediately oh, yeah.
Speaker 5 (36:46):
Position, absolutely there's a couple of those, guys but they're
going to go top fifty.
Speaker 6 (36:48):
And there's very.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
FEW i, mean you'd be hard fetched to name ten
dominant corners in this. League, yeah it's just a position
that that's the. Premium it's not an easy position to.
Speaker 6 (36:58):
Play it's a week to week two, absolutely, Right.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
So it's easier. Ones it's better to go develop those.
Guys get some, young talented guys that fit your scheme
that you can develop with. Coaching, right you're seeing an
emphasis on. Coaching we saw that with the offensive line
last year as. Well, right they're putting a huge emphasis
on coaching those guys. Up it's harder to go find
guys at those, positions so get him in a. Draft
linebacker is a position, that again you. Need he's the
(37:21):
quarterback of the defense typically all, right most defenses you.
Need you would prefer to have an experienced quarterback than
you would have a young quarterback that hasn't seen. Much
the same reason why you want to experience middle linebacker
versus a young linebacker that hasn't seen. Much these offenses
are co complex, now it is what it. Is so
you need that guy to have the wisdom to have
the fortitude and have the command in respect of everybody around,
(37:43):
him to be able to communicate what is being told
to him by his defensive coordinator and be able to
make sure that everybody is doing what they need to.
Do you need wisdom for that reason WHY i stood
on the table For. Bobby bobby's gonna put your defense in.
Position whether the guys around them can do, IT i don't, know,
right but he's gonna see, it diagnose, it and put
guys in. Position the guys that they still talk about
around that there were great linebackers for The. Cowboys what
(38:05):
were they able to? Do see, it diagnose, it put
guys in. Position you need that at that middle linebacker.
Position SO i would much rather The cowboys spend some
money and go get a solid piece to put in
the middle and then use this, talented physically talented group
that is hungry and, eager that can, learn that's. Smart
put those guys on the outside of those, guys and
(38:27):
then you can have a go defense that can play
well at the second.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
Level so you need a dog at.
Speaker 4 (38:30):
Linebacker you need a least you need a, smart well
respected dude that when the quarterback steps to the line of,
scrimmage he's, like, crap this is a chess. Game the
quarterback needs to get to the line of. Scrimmage the
center gets, down puts his hand on the, ball and
he looks at that dude square in his, eyes like
all right, here we go, RIGHT i make a, change
he makes.
Speaker 11 (38:49):
A, change seeing it All, yes, interesting all.
Speaker 5 (38:53):
Right when we come, back we're gonna flip it to
the offensive side of the. Ball before we wrap up
On Talking, cowboys we'll talk offensive.
Speaker 3 (38:58):

to you By Invisi, line The Official smile of The
Dallas cowboys With Tommy, Yarrish Josh, Rodriguez isaiah, Standback Chris
beam in the back Of Kyle yeoman's glad you're with,
us all? Right moving on to Offensive, tackle same, questions, Gentlemen,
josh what do they have at offensive Tax.
Speaker 11 (41:33):
Well they currently have under contract under Contract Tyler, Guiden Trump,
Pick Terrence, Steele Nate, thomas And Hakeema dinighi has a
depth piece. There as far as coaching, changes you haven't
really seen a whole. Lot Connor riley's still sticking around
as far as we, know but they did Add Kyle
fuller as an assistant offensive line slash quality control. Coach,
(41:57):
yeah that's what you currently have.
Speaker 6 (41:58):
Tonight you have three of coaches.
Speaker 3 (42:02):
Kind of.
Speaker 5 (42:04):
Arguably, arguably the question now, becomes and this is the
question that a lot of.
Speaker 3 (42:11):
People have been asking on other.
Speaker 5 (42:14):
Spots i'm okay asking the question Because i've said it
from the last three years or.
Speaker 3 (42:19):
More are you ready to move on From terrence To?
Speaker 6 (42:22):
No?
Speaker 3 (42:22):
No, okay why is? THAT i like the stability.
Speaker 6 (42:25):
THERE i like you.
Speaker 11 (42:26):
Still, YEAH i think at least if the rest of
the line is performing, WELL i don't think he's going
to bring you down a. Lot eleven sacks in twenty
twenty five is very. Concerning, yeah he didn't have a
three year it's not. Great, Yeah i'm not giving up
on him because of that. Year, no not at. All
and if you're able to restructure his contract a, BIT
i don't see a problem with where he's at BECAUSE
(42:48):
i don't think that's the be all end.
Speaker 5 (42:49):
All if you, Restructure i'm. Cool, yeah if you, Restructure
I'm i'm. Good but with what they're paying, now, yes
and the production that he's given, you not just this past,
year but over the course of the.
Speaker 3 (43:00):
Contract, yes he hasn't lived up to that. Number that's.
Fair that's a lot of.
Speaker 4 (43:04):
Guys, unfortunately you're, right get the, contract the play falls.
OFF i would, assume AND i put this on both.
PARTIES i put this ON t still to, analyze to self.
SCOUT i just saw some of the coaches in. THERE i,
said what are you all up to this? Week he
says self? Scouting he said. Awesome, RIGHT i would assume
that he still self scouting himself and analyzing and, saying,
hey you know, what that's NOT.
Speaker 6 (43:24):
T steey out. There that Was that was just THIS.
Ts that WASN'T T.
Speaker 4 (43:27):
Steely so he needs to get back to BEING T,
steey somebody who's who's sound wasn't. Dominant he's never been,
dominant but he's always been, sound right, Historically he's somebody
who has that dog in. Him that's something that we do, know, right,
SAID i don't question that ABOUT T still at. All
he's he'll go to he'll go fight for anybody on
the offensive line and injuries, whatever all this stuff, happens,
(43:50):
Right but HE i would have put the responsibility on
the coaches as well to, say, hey you guys have
invested so much with this office on line, coaching y'all
need to take somebody who has the will Determination if
that's the. Case, STILL i haven't talked to him will
determination and ability and make sure that he's who you
guys need him to. Be and AGAIN i put that
on both, parties the player and the. Coaches but T
(44:12):
still is. Capable he's. CAPABLE i don't Think i've never
seen T still switch it. Off have you seen him
had bad? Play, yes you see that with every player
in the, league Right you just don't want to see
that other players that you're paying a lot of money.
Too but it still happens as you switch to the other.
Side that's WHERE i have. Questions, HMMM i have questions there.
(44:32):
TOO i JUST i have more questions there THAN i
do with the right.
Speaker 11 (44:35):
Side, okay, well really quick, though what was your purview
on Steel.
Speaker 7 (44:40):
Steele, is like sleepy one of the biggest decisions this
team has this.
Speaker 10 (44:44):
Offseason to a.
Speaker 7 (44:46):
Degree you understand why they'd want to keep him because
he is such a plus for you in the run.
Speaker 9 (44:52):
Game.
Speaker 7 (44:52):
YEP i think he And Tyler booker when they ran right.
Side they had a lot of success with. It those
two dudes were just moving. Yep and it's not surprising
Because Zach martin loved playing With Terrence steele because those
two did the same. Thing so from a run game,
perspective with how good this offensive line was schematically and
(45:13):
how good of a Job Clayton adams And Connor riley
did just setting things up to run the, FOOTBALL i
can understand why they'd want to Keep Terrence. Steele it's
the past protection that really worries. You and he said
the injury stuff that he's dealt with and is he
ever going to be back to what he was before
(45:33):
that that's the tough, part especially because of the money
that he's going to cost you and the fact that
they're thirty million in the red already, yep in cap
space with so many. Holes now if you let them,
go you'd be creating another hole.
Speaker 10 (45:45):
ESSENTIALLY i understand.
Speaker 7 (45:46):
That but my question would be how confident is this
staff in their ability to develop guys and put a
guy in there and allow them to fill that. Role
because if you get if you feel like any the
guys like A Nate thomas who had A i think
roller coaster is a good word for. It of a
(46:06):
year they drafted A Johnny cornelius in the sixth round last.
Year is he a guy that you could played attack Oled?
Oregon is he a guy that you maybe want to
give a chance? To there Goes isaiah's. Opinion it's it's
very interesting as it as it stands right. NOW I
i think there's just too much he's being held. Back if,
(46:29):
YOU i don't know how much you would save, restructuring
you would save.
Speaker 10 (46:33):
A lot more by letting him.
Speaker 7 (46:34):
Walk, yeah and so that that makes me kind of
lean that, Way BUT i could see them going either.
Speaker 5 (46:38):
Way the dead cap this, year by the, way the
dead cap if you were to let him walk would
be seven point, three so or excuse, me nine point.
Three so that's what it would. Take but his cap
hit is twice. That it's eighteen point.
Speaker 11 (46:51):
Two let me ask. YOU i, mean this is a longer,
conversation but just to end it really quickly On, steel
if you do not restructure, him if you don't keep,
him you're then relying on who knows that right. Tackle
and then Also Tyler, goydon who has not been.
Speaker 10 (47:10):
Available, yep that's what makes it really.
Speaker 7 (47:12):
Tough that's what makes its last just one of the
tough decisions they've got this. Year because if you are
if you are left to tackle with two big question,
marks that could.
Speaker 5 (47:20):
Be what you have going even if you keep both of. Those, sure,
yeah it's a question market both.
Speaker 10 (47:25):
Spots that has the potential to be.
Speaker 5 (47:26):
Disastrous he's been one of the worst pass blocking tackles
in football the last two.
Speaker 3 (47:32):
Years but he's such a good.
Speaker 10 (47:33):
Run but he is a great, run which is what
makes it really.
Speaker 6 (47:36):
Hard so do you think that he could be a
good pass?
Speaker 3 (47:39):
BLOCKER i hope, so because we have.
Speaker 5 (47:44):
There's been one year where he's been a solid, passport
so we know he's and it's what earned him the,
contract so we know.
Speaker 6 (47:49):
He's kep doing.
Speaker 4 (47:50):
It so then what responsibility falls on the? COACHES a
lot of, THAT a lot of. It, Yeah, yeah it's
not so it's not a capability, thing it's not a
want to. Thing it's an execution. Thing so that falls
on the player and the. Coaches like that's WHY i
don't have an issue with T, Still, yes he needs
to improve his game and he. WILL i foresee him
improve in his, game but the coaches have to invest
(48:10):
in him. Right there's other people WHO i don't even
know if they want to play THAT i can't.
Speaker 10 (48:16):
HAVE i do agree with, that say the bigger questions
on the left.
Speaker 5 (48:21):
SIDE i Think i'm right there with, You but you
can't necessarily move on from, him can move on From Tyler?
Guidon now you have a question mark on what you
could do With Terrence. Steele With Tyler, goeydon there's not
a whole.
Speaker 3 (48:34):
Lot and you can.
Speaker 10 (48:35):
Do you just have to hope he stays. Healthy, yeah.
Speaker 6 (48:37):
Exactly and one of.
Speaker 3 (48:38):
The best things for him might be moving him to right.
Speaker 5 (48:40):
Tackle let's be completely. Honest that's where his college tenure,
Was that's where he was comfortable. At he's played both positions.
Before he was better at right, tackle so that might
be what's best For.
Speaker 6 (48:51):
Tyler do you know that he wants to be there
week in week? Out do you have that Confident Tyler, Guyton, yes.
Speaker 3 (48:57):
That he wants to be at left tackle.
Speaker 6 (48:58):
Or right that he wants to be here playing playing.
Speaker 4 (49:01):
Available that has a question that gives, YOU i guess
answer like, that that's that's what.
Speaker 3 (49:07):
Me then what do you do with?
Speaker 4 (49:08):
THEM i don't. KNOW i the evaluation process was. Wrong
in my, opinion AND i don't put that on any.
GUY i just go off for WHAT i. SEE i
just go off for WHAT i, see and you. Can and,
again he has the power to turn it on or
turn it. Off we've seen that turn it, on turn it,
off injuries or. INJURIES a will and determination should never be.
Questioned in my, eyes that should never be questioned because
(49:32):
that's something that you're wholeheartedly in control. Of AND i
have questions WHEN i watch him at, PRACTICE i have
questions WHEN i watch him in. GAMES i don't want
to have questions about people who are tasked with with
with executing and who are tasked with protecting.
Speaker 3 (49:47):
One of the top. Positions much.
Speaker 4 (49:51):
So that's so when we, compare if we're comparing the
tackles on this, roster the two starting, tackles one is
a dog that is an absolute be still one aspect
of his game doesn't turn it. Off may not be
the greater execution all the time as of, late right
has some injuries and things of that. Nature but you
know what you're gonna get. Right SO i can coach.
That you asked any, COACH i will.
Speaker 6 (50:13):
Take that all day.
Speaker 4 (50:13):
Long you can coach AROUND i can coach, that, yeah,
absolutely knowing whether or not that person wants wants to.
Speaker 10 (50:19):
PLAY i.
Speaker 4 (50:20):
CAN'T i can't do nothing with. That and, yes now
contractually they're in a. Bind and it can he be
an absolute? Beast he can be an absolute, beast can.
Speaker 3 (50:30):
Be can be just. Hasn't it's a question.
Speaker 5 (50:35):
Mark AND i think there's a split Between cowboys. Fans
i'm even trying to read like where the chat is,
leaning AND i don't have a spot whether they're leaning
one way or the. Other if you do have an
opinion on, this reply To Talking cowboys ON x reply
to the live. STREAM i want to see what people are,
thinking so that way we can kind of look through
it as.
Speaker 6 (50:53):
Well don't draft.
Speaker 3 (50:53):
ONE i don't think. That please don't not the first.
Speaker 5 (50:56):
Round unless you just go unbelievably spend happy in free
agency and revamp your entire, defense then we can maybe
talk about.
Speaker 3 (51:04):
It maybe, Maybe but that's a Long there's a.
Speaker 6 (51:07):
Lot that happened To Jason. Peters he's only forty, eight.
Speaker 3 (51:10):
He was already. HERE i think there are bigger.
Speaker 2 (51:13):
Problems all.
