Join me as we get real and talkabout all the things you need
to kick some serious directsales booty From overcoming
(00:26):
limiting beliefs to sharing theexact strategies you need to
attract the right people whobecome customers and beg to join
your team.
I've got you covered, girl.
I'm going to be your new BFFwhen it comes to balancing life
and kids while building yourdirect sales business with poise
, peace of mind and, of course,a good set of fake eyelashes.
Let's get started.
(00:48):
Hello, my friends, welcome backto another episode of the
Direct Sellers Podcast.
I'm your host, rachel, and I'mso happy you're here Today.
We're going to talk about thatsneaky little lie that so many
(01:10):
direct sales leaders believe, because it's what we've been
taught, and that lie is if Icould just get my team motivated
again, everything would go backto how it was.
Or if I could just get my teammotivated, then I know I would
be able to get to my next rank.
Or you know, she's the one.
I can just see it, she's there.
(01:32):
She's got so much potential.
Oh my gosh, the times that Iwould sponsor a new team member
and I'd be like she's the one,like she's the one that's.
You know, we all want the one,the one like us, the one that's
going to like, take us to thenext level.
Does that sound familiar?
Oh my gosh, I tell you what.
And listen, I get it.
(01:53):
Like you're doing all thethings.
You're still showing up, you'restill training, you're still
running incentives and contestsand leading from the front, but
for so many of you it feels likeyou're carrying everyone and
everything on your back andmaybe your commission check just
isn't reflecting the effortthat you're putting in.
(02:13):
Maybe you are reaching out toyour team and trying to inspire
them and motivate them, butthey're ghosting you.
If any of that sounds familiar, this episode is for you.
Okay, this episode is just foryou because, listen, I am
hearing this across the board, especially that your teams just
aren't working or a lot of teammembers are leaving for another
(02:38):
company.
And you know, there's been alot of upheaval recently and
we've talked about this before,I mean at the time of this
recording, there have just beentwo closings of rather large
companies, modere, and thenSignature Home or Signature Home
Styles I can't remember whatthe name is.
But guys like people arehurting, people are in really
(02:59):
tough positions and if you're aleader and you're listening to
this, you've got to really thinkabout this, you know wisely.
We've got to come at it from astrategic point, because if your
company were to close or ifthey were to change the comp
plan or whatever, you're the onethat's going to suffer the most
.
Right, and so many top leadersstay in hope mode.
(03:22):
It's hard to think about whatcould happen.
And I don't even think that weshould live in that sort of
state of mind Like what if?
Like I just got over talking tomy daughter, my youngest.
She's like mom.
Sometimes I find myselfthinking like what if I were to
get cancer?
Or what if I get diabetes orwhat if?
And I was like we can't.
You can't focus on the what ifsbecause you're going to worry
yourself to death.
(03:42):
Can't focus on the what ifsbecause you're going to worry
yourself to death.
But in your case, as leaders, Ido think that there's, there is
something that you can do andthat is to be aware and to
prepare right Like let's, let'sset you up so that if the worst
happens, you're not up a creek,we're not going to sit in worry
mode, but we are going to be alittle bit more strategic.
(04:07):
So many leaders are in that hopemode, like, well you know what,
maybe next month, maybe nextmonth is going to be the month
that, like, they start workingagain, or maybe this next new
product launch is going to getthem excited.
Or maybe, if I can get them toconference, then everything will
change.
Or maybe maybe it's me, maybe Ijust need to do a better job of
motivating them.
But here's the truth, friendsyour job is to lead, not to drag
(04:32):
.
Okay, motivation is an insidejob.
So the longer you try to forceit, the more drained you're
going to feel and you can'tmotivate someone else.
I mean, yes, we havemotivational speakers and we
have all things like that, butit's because the person is
willing to receive thatmotivation.
You can't force someone to feelmotivated.
(04:54):
But here's the thing A lot ofcompanies teach that your
success depends on duplication,on team volume, on everybody
else doing their part.
But in real life, sometimespeople ghost you Right,
sometimes they disappearmid-rank, sometimes they lose
the spark and don't get it back.
(05:15):
Sometimes they hit a snag intheir journey and they lose
their momentum.
And it doesn't matter how goodyou are at being a leader.
The problem is, if yourcommission check is tied to
their performance, you're kindof on unstable ground.
(05:36):
When I was in direct sales, Ifound I would do everything
right.
I mean y'all, I was doingeverything I was supposed to do.
But what I found was that myteam didn't want they didn't
want what I wanted.
They didn't want it as badly asI wanted it.
(05:58):
And what was frustrating isthat I wanted them to be like me
.
I wanted them to be motivated.
I wanted them to want to climbthe ladder.
I wanted all of that.
And it wasn't that my team wasbad because they weren't and
they weren't lazy, they werejust human.
Life happened right, workhappened, jobs changed, people
(06:20):
got distracted, kids got sick.
And then I realized, you knowwhat, if I'm depending on my
team to perform, I've lost alittle bit of control there.
I've lost a little bit ofstability, because if my monthly
income is based on how my teamdoes, that's not totally within
(06:40):
my control.
So here's, here's, and you guysknow my story and I'm going to
share it again.
But that's when Amanda and Iturned our knowledge and created
a product.
We were having success withFacebook parties and, instead of
just teaching our team to doFacebook parties, someone said
(07:00):
you know, you could sell thisLike you could teach everybody
how to do Facebook parties.
And we were like, no that, nostop.
But sure enough, we took a andwe did it.
We turned it into a mini courseand, as we and we were shocked
(07:22):
at the response so many peoplewanted it and it makes sense it
doubled our sales.
Like, of course, it was a newstrategy.
Facebook was new.
It wasn't like it is now, wherepeople are like no more
Facebook parties.
It was great, and we turnedthat into an extra stream of
income.
We created content thatattracted the right people, not
(07:43):
just for our products, but forwhat we were teaching.
Right.
We built a brand around us, notjust what we sold, and so my
direct sales business at thetime was doing great, but so was
my additional stream of income, and let me tell you this, the
piece of knowing that I hadsomething of my own was truly
(08:04):
unmatched, and I didn't realizehow much I needed that until I
had it, and I really feel likeevery leader needs a backup plan
or needs a plan B or needssomething on the side.
And here's the beauty of this.
It doesn't mean you quit at all, like I didn't.
It took me years before I leftdirect sales to focus on the tag
(08:25):
team.
But the thing is is you'reprobably already doing something
.
You're probably alreadyteaching something to your ideal
people.
You are already.
You already have the skills.
We just have to package it in adifferent way.
You just need someone who, likea person who came to us to say
you should sell this.
(08:45):
You just need someone to dothat and I'll be that person for
you.
Okay girl, okay girl.
Okay.
So listen, if you are feelinglike your team engagement has
dropped and you're still like, yeah, but maybe they'll come
back, like maybe this is just aphase, or maybe you know it's
(09:06):
just a bad month, or yourcompany has made some changes to
the comp plan and your checkmight be a little bit smaller,
you know, a lot of the companiesare shifting into the affiliate
model or they are changing thepercentage of how much you can
get with commission, things likethat.
(09:26):
Or if you feel like you're kindof annoyed with your team right
now, like I've had a student orclient you know in the past,
one in particular, who literallywas so annoyed with her team.
I was like girl, are youspeaking like this to them
Because they are not going towant to show up?
But she was so done with them, she was so done.
(09:47):
She was like legit, a littlebit resentful towards them.
Right, she didn't really sayanything out loud, but that
energy was coming through.
Or maybe you're scared to admitout loud that you're tired
because you're supposed to bethe leader, you're supposed to
be showing up.
If any of these things are truefor you right now, then I think
(10:09):
maybe I just want to encourageyou, because here's the thing
You're not crazy, you're notungrateful and you're definitely
not alone.
It's just, this is anexhausting business to be in,
and when you have momentum it'samazing.
But when there isn't momentum,it's fleeting and it's
(10:30):
exhausting, right, like it'sexhausting when there's no
momentum on your team, and it'sexhausting when there's no
momentum on your team and it'sexhausting when your team
members aren't working andyou're like if they would just
do this one thing, if they wouldjust come to this training, or
if they would just reach out tofive people, or whatever it is,
but they don't, and it's nothingagainst them.
(10:52):
It's just like I said,distractions happen, life
happens.
Maybe they don't have thedesire, maybe they're tired of
the network marketing hustle, that hamster wheel that so many
find themselves on right.
So if that is you, I want toencourage you and I want you to
know that there are options foryou.
Okay, it doesn't have to bethat the only way to fix this is
(11:18):
to get a new team.
I mean, how many times have webeen told that, if your team
isn't working, find a new team.
If only it was that easy.
So here's what I want you to doright now.
These are three things that youcan do right now.
The first thing is I want youto identify what you're already
known for, or what do peoplelove to hear you talk about?
(11:39):
Ok, here's something that I'vejust started bringing back for
me Wigs.
Ok, let me just hear me out.
I used to, when I was part ofthe tag team, I had a character
called Jasleen and I loved beingJasleen and we would do videos
and we would do all the things.
And then, after the tag team, Ireally wanted my wigs to come
(12:01):
back out, but I couldn't connectSomehow I couldn't, I couldn't
connect.
So years later, a couple daysago, I was like you know what I
feel?
I feel like a character comingon, so I did a skit and it was
basically this girl.
It's like what to what, not todo as a network marketer, and I
was pretending that I was this, this network marketer, and I
(12:22):
just felt it on my heart for,for all those who just lost the
company, that the company hadclosed, like they could come and
join my team and it was thebest place and blah, blah, blah,
blah.
But you guys, so many peopleresponded to that.
So many people responded theywere like oh my gosh, the wigs.
I've missed the wigs, I'vemissed the characters.
These make me so happy.
So that's something I'm alreadyknown for.
(12:42):
I'm already known for that.
People love it.
So what is something thatyou're already known for?
And it doesn't have to be wigs.
Okay, it doesn't have to bewigs.
Another thing that I'm knownfor is people feel encouraged.
They feel encouraged by mycontent.
They like to come to my page orthey like to come and watch my
reels, because I not onlyeducate but I also connect.
(13:04):
So what is something that youare known for or something that
you love, like something thatjust brings you so much joy.
And then I want you tobrainstorm what could be a
digital product that you couldcreate.
Like what could you create?
Either a mini course or guide,or an audio, like a mini podcast
(13:25):
or something about this.
Just simple.
We're going to start small.
We're going to start reallysmall.
Maybe you are just awesome inthe kitchen and you come up with
some really great recipes.
You could share those y'all.
Maybe you are just amazing withsystems.
Why not package five of yoursystems, put them into like a
(13:47):
guide, a toolkit.
Then what I want you to do isto start shifting your content
slightly.
Start sharing you, okay, butshare your story, your knowledge
, your store.
You know, your story is yourknowledge and your unique point
of view.
I was talking to someone theother day and she was saying
(14:07):
that she felt like like herInstagram just wasn't connecting
with people, and so I went andlooked at her Instagram.
Um wasn't connecting withpeople.
And so I went and looked at herInstagram and all of her posts
were about skincare and glowyskin, and, while that's great
and fine, I felt like it wasmissing her.
Who was she?
(14:28):
What does she do.
Well, I was like bring more ofyou to the forefront here.
Let's get to know you.
What are you passionate about?
What are you excited about?
How can you help?
Who is your ideal person?
Because here's the thing, guys.
This is how you begin to buildthat additional stream of income
that works for you, whether ornot your team shows up.
(14:49):
It doesn't have to be big, itdoesn't have to be incredible.
It just I really just want youto start thinking about what are
some things that you do and youdo well, okay, and how could we
turn those into something smallthat you could sell?
So I want to leave you withthis.
You're not.
You're not losing it.
There's nothing wrong with youIf your team isn't working.
(15:12):
You're not negative, you're notburned out, you're not giving
up.
You're not a bad leader, butyou're evolving.
And if you're uncomfortable, ifyou're like I just want more, I
just want my team to work or Ijust want, if you're feeling the
nudge of discontent, or you'refeeling like there should be,
there's something more this isnot fueling you like it used to.
(15:35):
This might be the nudge tostart stepping out into building
something that's yours.
Let's stop tying your successto someone else's motivation.
Let's stop tying your worth andyour value to someone else's
motivation.
Right, listen?
If you are like, okay, rachel,I need to know more of what
(15:57):
you're talking about.
I need to know more, do me afavor, dm me the word backup and
or you can go to the show notesand you can just go to.
You know my link with Rachel APerry at Rachel A Perry on
Instagram, but DM me the wordbackup and let's chat, let's
talk about what this backup planmight look like for you.
I would love to help you dothat, and we can just do it over
(16:22):
chat, like just in DMs, andjust brainstorm some ideas.
