Pasentino Boone. My special guest today is Waylan Pain. We're
going to talk about his new album, which is coming
out soon. We're going to talk about his new single

I'm taking care of yours, folding laundry, that kind of stuff.

Yes, the human things that need to be done every day,
every day exactly. I hear you. I have to do
the same. But I'm just so excited to talk with
you today because you have some You have something very
exciting that is coming out July seventeenth, your new album Wayward.
Can you tell us a little bit about this album,
because it's already being described as vulnerable, honest, and beaming
(02:02):
with wisdom. So can you share a little bit about that.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
You know, I've been thinking a lot about it lately.
And here's my assummation. I believe of this project. This
is my third album out and I've been a songwriter
for thirty years now.
Speaker 5 (02:18):
I guess we're just staggering to think.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
I'm kind of I kind of gave this album a
nickname and I'm calling it like volume three in a
Life Well Lived series.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
Oh yeah, oh for sure.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
And so it's like I kind of as I listened
back to it, I got the vinyl the other day
and it was, you know, I'm I'm of that age
where I just love vinyl. I grew up on it,
and all these years later, it's really really amazing to
pull a piece of plastic out and put it on
a turntable and here stuff.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
And.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
But it's just I tell you this is I tell stories.
I'm a song toe, like Dolly Parker says, and I
guess I'm just continuing telling stories. There are definitely some well,
it's most of mostly very personal stuff. I mean I
always ride from a spot of that.
Speaker 5 (03:12):
I guess. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yes, we have things too, We have things that we
know because we go through things, right, Oh, and so
we should share those things.
Speaker 5 (03:21):
Maybe somebody else can get something out of it.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
I don't know, but I'm extremely proud of it. My
current single that's out right now is called Weed by
the Wall, and it's one of my favorite favorite things ever.
It's just makes me happy every time I hear it.
It's a great record to drive to if you if
you ever want to go out to the country and
just drive for an hour or so.

And listen to a good record. This is a good one.

Oh, it really is. It is so good. It's available

Can you share the inspiration behind the song for.

Me if you don't mind, Well, it's kind of weird.
Speaker 5 (03:54):
I'd been doing I've.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Been partying a long time, doing a lot of drugs,
and I got sober in twenty twelve, and I felt
like I needed to challenge my mind a little bit more.
Speaker 5 (04:07):
I felt like I'd been lazy.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
So I went to the bookstore, the half priced bookstore,
and I got a bunch of books and the classics,
you know, like To Kill a mocking Bird and James
Woodcomb Riley and The Row.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
And I picked up this one book, Ralph.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Waldo Emerson, and it's I started trying to read it,
and I couldn't.
Speaker 5 (04:34):
I couldn't, couldn't get into it. So I closed my
eyes and I opened the book.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Up to the middle of the thing.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
And I put my finger down on a spot and
I opened my eyes and it said I am God
in nature.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
I'm a weed by the wall.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
So I was like, that's that's great. I hope I'm
not stealing too hard. But then it.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Comes from a It comes from a you know, it's
the last line of a.
Speaker 5 (04:58):
Essay he did called so, which is just it's about
the life of an artist and a writer, and that's it.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Had i'd had the second verse, you know, where I
sing real deep in it, I'd had that verse for
about twenty years. I wrote it back in like the
nineties and I just never knew where it went. And
then when I saw the weed by the wall thing,
it started to be a pondering and so I just
started thinking about life, and it's a strange, lonesome, weird
(05:27):
life as a songwriter, and we see a lot of things.
So I just put it down in words, and I
hope it hits home. It's just seriously, it's one of
my favorite spots on the record. I really, I really
hope that the world gets to hear it and ponder
it with me.

Yes, Oh, I love that.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
And I find it so interesting how you can find
inspiration through just about anything if you're looking for it,
if you keep your eyes open in this world, you know, and.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
Yeah, how you look at things.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
You can find inspiration anywhere, you know exactly good and bad.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
You know, when you're doing bad things, you can be
inspired to do more bad things if you just look
towards the wrong way, but keep your eyes on the prize.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
My buddy Willie Nelson, I'm gonna name drop.

Did you did you hear that hit the floor so loud?
I love that.

I love that. Hey, we need to talk about it
because you're about to go on tour with him.

So we got to talk about it.

Yes, well, he gave me an old piece of advice
years ago after I first got sober, and he said
he lives his life this way, and it's basically, you know,
yesterday's deadn't go on haha, you can't do anything about that.
And tomorrow is never going to get here. You will
never see tomorrow because it's always now. You keep now
(06:41):
in check and make sure that everything is good right now.
Then that kinda will take care of everything else.

And don't be an asshole.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
And yes, that's number one. Wise words for sure. Wise words.

be able to sit by him on the night so

we get to make music.

It's truly one of the one of the highlights of
my life. I can't. I pinch myself a lot.

I just yeah, oh, yes, Oh, that's amazing. And I

the connection that you two have because it stands long time,
because I believe your father worked with him as his guitarist, right, So.

Your mom was a singer.

She was Sanny Smith and Lily and Mama used to
do duets in the early seventies and tour together. And
then Willy hired Daddy after she fired him out of
her band, and so it just keeps.

I've known Willy all my life and it's like a dad.

Yes, full circle. I love it. That's amazing. So everyone

Festival tour. And I wanted to also go back a
little bit with Wayward because you have some great collaborations
on this album as well that I seen. Can you
tell us a little bit about that, because Pam tellus
Marianda Lambert, I mean come home.

Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Well, you know, I love writing songs, and after I
got sober in twenty twelve, I moved back to Nashville
in twenty fifteen, and I had owed my publisher and producer,
Frank Ladell, a lot of songs because while I was
screwed up, I was just not very productive. But he
was very gracious and gave me my job back and

allowed me to make up my debt.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
And so I just poured myself into work for those years.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
And I'm probably not as diligent as I should be
right now because we're releasing this record. In my mind
goes away. But I'll get back to writing songs again, Frank,
I promise soon. But it's you know, in that conversation,
you know we we write with lots of people.
Speaker 5 (09:25):
Do you write by yourself? You write with your friends?
Speaker 3 (09:27):
You It's just a music is supposed to be a
good time.
Speaker 5 (09:31):
It's supposed to get your feelings out and communicate with
each other.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
So yeah, Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe and I wrote
a song together. A Miranda and Aaron Rachier and I
wrote a song together for it called the Postcards from
the Mailman. See there's a Charlie Warsham on there. That
was our last single called holding On to Lonely. My
buddy Dean person who I wrote Santa Anna Wins with

when the Last record has a couple.

You know, it doesn't it doesn't happen overnight. You know,
this has been five years in the making. We started
it during the during the pandemic, and it's been sitting
for a while. So we found the right people that
wanted to help us get it out there, and Big
Loud Texas came along, which.

Is just great. And so I'm excited, you know, and
I'm just pleased. You know, it's always a joy when
you're I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
I can't say it's always a joy because it doesn't
happen to me very often. I'm sure it is thrilling
for everybody that hears themselves on the radio, and a
couple of months I've been able to do that a lot,
and it's just kind of it's nice to see that
what you've done is getting heard and oh for sure.

Before we go real quick, I want to do a
little fun fact for people who may not know this,
because this was personally one of my favorite movies. Okay,
my husband and I you were part of Walk the Line.
Well you're Jerley Lewis in there. I mean, come on now,
that's incredible.

It was, Yeah, and you know, there are a lot
of my friends in it.

What an experience it was.

I think that I think we all knew that it

to come are going to you know, go back to it.

You know, it doesn't it doesn't happen overnight. You know,
this has been five years in the making. We started
it during the during the pandemic, and it's been sitting
for a while. So we found the right people that
wanted to help us get it out there, and Big
Loud Texas came along, which.

Is just great. And so I'm excited, you know, and
I'm just pleased. You know, it's always a joy when
you're I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
I can't say it's always a joy because it doesn't
happen to me very often. I'm sure it is thrilling
for everybody that hears themselves on the radio, and a
couple of months I've been able to do that a lot,
and it's just kind of it's nice to see that
what you've done is getting heard and oh for sure.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
Before we go real quick, I want to do a
little fun fact for people who may not know this,
because this was personally one of my favorite movies. Okay,
my husband and I you were part of Walk the Line.
Well you're Jerley Lewis in there. I mean, come on now,
that's incredible.

All loved it.

It was, Yeah, and you know, there are a lot
of my friends in it.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
What an experience it was.

I think that I think we all knew that it
was going to be something special and considered a classic.

And it's kind of interesting thinking that, you know, generations
to come are going to you know, go back to it.
