Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rick Griz is going to join us, the legendary broadcaster
from the Mariners at twelve twenty today. Obviously the Marrier's
coming home starting at homestand more importantly, not more importantly,
but of importance as well is Randy Johnson weekend Jersey
retirement tomorrow, and we'll talk to Rizzy about what the
Big Unit meant to Seattle, what he saw from him
(00:22):
from his broadcast perch for so many years. And also
obviously we'll touch in on the early season where the
ms are two finally back to five hundred on the year,
so a lot to discuss looking for I haven't had
a chance to talk to Rick Riz at the final season,
by the way, calling games for the Mariners, So looking
forward to having that conversation with Rick Griz coming up
at twelve twenty today. Having animal the show for some
(00:42):
time really, probably since last year, so that's coming up
of twelve twenty. Joe with the Emerald Downs will join
us about twelve forty five today. Joe is here. The
Emerald Downs starts. I believe it's Sins thirty. He'll give
us the clarity about thirty first season. I believe in
Auburn at the Emeralds tracked the gorgeous track down there.
Of course, we used to have racing at Long Acres
(01:03):
for so many years and now Long Acres would be
the home for the Sounders. Yeah days. So after many
years being part of the Boeing complex down there and
in tuck will It, it's now where the Sounders are.
They moved three decades ago down to Emerald Downs in Auburn,
and the horse racing business is a little bit beat
up these days, but Emerald Downs is thriving. They had
a great year last year, they're expecting a great year
(01:25):
this year. Basically weekend race dates on Fridays and Saturdays, Sundays,
and I think for a while just Saturday after Friday,
Saturdays and Sundays for the most part until we get
to the summer months. But yeah, and tomorrow's Atuking Kentucky Derby.
So with that they open up every year winning Mr
Cup tomorrow opening day two. So it's always a big
weekend and in a rare, rare state of affairs, we
(01:46):
have good weather coming up this weekend as well. So
with he's going to join us at twelve forty five,
our guy Danny O'Neil at one twenty, looking forward to
that the dang apostrophe, and we'll check in with him
at one twenty for all things Seattle Sports, courtesy the
best sports writing in New York City. And then Rob
rang will wrap things up at two o'clock today our
Draft Insider, Fox Sports dot com, BC Lions Scout also
(02:08):
Seahawks dot Com. He was with us, of course for
all of our draft coverage, pre draft coverage, current draft coverage,
and now post draft coverage. Will kind of wrap things
up again. We'll get a chance to watch guys in
and out of the building here inside to keep an
eye on what's going on out there. I also we
may squeeze this into in fact, we probably will here
in a second, Russell Wilson may be retiring and joining
the television. Just just gave you the word media, the
(02:31):
media ranks, So we'll touch in on that a little
bit too, coming up in just a few minutes. So, yeah,
a lot going on today. Guys just went out there
watching things. Remember when there's a couple of things that
jumped out one Jadarian Price, who was introduced yesterday five eleven,
two oh three, And I think you know, one of
the conversations we had with him was about him with
(02:54):
Hugh and everybody else was the size and is he
you know, it seems like maybe not the I don't
want to see the biggest guy. But two oh three
felt a little light boy laying eyes on him. He
looks every bit the part. That's just first impression. It's
like there's nothing slight about him, even even Bud Clark,
(03:15):
who I'll take a pic. I just took some pictures.
I'm not sure when we can post those or not.
As soon as we can, I'll put him up on
Twitter and.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Theium.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Well, it's it's a little different for many rookies. I think.
I don't think we'll see in a second. I'm just
looking here, Bud Clark, he's thin, like you'll see it.
You'll see the pictures. He's thin, you know, got long
sleeves and long pants on, but he's yeah, he's thin.
I'll tell you what. Jadariing Price is just an impressive
looking athlete. Though man his not I'll tell you this
(03:43):
hasn't missed arm day, not once. It's not missed Arm.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
He was on the podium. You could see it yesterday.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Yeah, yeah, he has not missed. He has not missed
arm Day got a chance as well. Look at Julian Neil.
He's long man. Yeah, I mean all the things we
thought we'll see as we go back out in breaks
and stuff. Kind of keep an eye on things. They
have three quarterbacks here, including it's interesting when they picked
up Ky Horton from Washington didn't really play at Washington obviously,
(04:11):
but as a transfer, kind of a highly thought of transfer.
He's here, Blake Chapin or Shapin is here from Mississippi State.
And then the one that's kind of interesting. Be interesting
to see what he does this weekend and if he
ends up having a weekend that invites him back. I listen.
The quarterback position seems very well set with this team
(04:34):
with Milroe Locke and obviously Sam Darnold. But the interesting
one Jake Rerhetz laugh if you remember the name. He
played it Tulane last year and finished up his college career.
But before that he had a really strong career at
BYU and then had to leave BYU because he violated
the honor code. In the most pg of terms. One
(04:57):
of the honor code things at BYU you cannot be
with someone in any sort of intimate way or what
have you. And I basically had a girlfriend and I
think she might have said it was one of those
I just want to get into it. It's just when
I worked down there, it was just one of those things.
Kids being kids. Adults are adults, but they have their rules,
(05:18):
and so he violated that and he left and went
to Tulane and kind of finished off his career in
a nondescript way with the Green Wave last season. But
he's here, so it'd be interesting to see what he does.
I think he's got a chance to maybe get himself
an invite back to the main camp if they want
to bring a fourth quarterback in and even just have
a practice squad guy in addition to three guys on
the roster. But the rest of those players are all here.
(05:39):
I'll tell you the other guy that just kind of
jumped out. We were watching him. I was talking to
Corbyn Smith about him. He's here, and I said, Devin Easton,
who was a late pick, seventh round pick, their second
of three seventh round picks. Devin east is a nose
tackle out of Minnesota, every bit of six five and
three twenty. He's not I'll say this, Red Bryant Red
(06:01):
felt like it was a little bit taller, maybe a
little thicker. But he's big, like he jumps off the
like you look at him and go okay, like if
there's something there, but you can't teach big, you just
you cannot teach big. And he looks every bit big
along the way. So but we looked at all we
saw all the guys out there, Andre four, Michael Dansby.
I didn't mention this. Both Stevens, who had on the
(06:21):
show this week. Manuel Henderson Junior didn't mention this in
the in the update. Now, let me just double check.
As of this morning, the Seahawks had signed I think
all but two of their draft picks. It's not what
it used to be. Let's see, do they sign a
seventh now? Yeah, Manuel Henderson, So yeah, they have signed
(06:43):
all but Price, I do believe are under contract now.
So out of the eight guys double checking, seven undrafted.
Oh no, that's I'm sorry, that's the rookie undrafted rookie
fore agents. I got a bunch of those guys coming
into but they've signed pretty much every but as far
as your draft picks, the guys they haven't signed include
(07:03):
Judarium Price, but six of the eight draft selections have
been signed already by this team. The one that hasn't
Bud Clark and Judarian Price. Those contracts. Remember back in
the day, you guys remember this, Anders, even though you're
a youngin just certainly desert. There used to be the
contract holdouts back in the day, right, like, all, is
(07:24):
your first round picking a sign? Is he going to
be there for the opening of camp? And I'm trying
to remember the last guy they had an issue with, Well,
it would have been I don't want to go all
the way back to twenty ten because I don't think
I mean, well Cam did it, no, but he would No,
I'm talking about drafted trookies.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Oh rookies. Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
When they changed the CBA, they changed it so so
everything slotted now like there's no negotiation. You're going to
make this. That's what it is. It's kind of like
the NHL has the same thing. You're drafted here, You're
going to make this, Thanks for coming, and away you go.
That's kind of how it is. So it's not like
the old days where you have to worry about your
first round pick, or are a couple draft picks holding
out for more money that really doesn't happen anymore. So
(08:05):
so yeah, so six other eight have signed so far
have signed contracts for the Seahawks, so that's a good
thing as well. I think we're going to talk at
about one forty five today after Danny, I believe we're
gonna get Ricky White the third on and if you
remember that name, he was a seventh round draft pick
(08:25):
last year from UNLV. Kind of thought in a sense
a little bit sort of and I'm just kind of
like maybe a little bit like Emmanuel Henderson junior. They're
relatively the same size bull six to one, both mid
one eighties. Ricky White the third was drafted kind of
as a special teams guy, and he ended up, I believe,
(08:47):
on this practice squad all season. He's out there today
working out in his second year. Be interesting conversation that
we could have with him, because I mean, he was here.
He didn't really get a chance to play, but he
was here year and he's going through it for a
second time, so kind of we'll have a good fun
conversation with with Ricky White. He was drafted, release signed
(09:08):
the practice squad. He did get activated a couple of
games and actually did see time in two regular season games,
but was on the practice squad for the most of
the year, so he was Yeah, he was on the
practice squad most of the year. Two games he played
last year, So we'll hopefully get a chance to hear
from Ricky White the third a little bit later on.
He's one of those sneaky guys that, depending on how
things shake out, injuries, all that fun stuff and whatever happens,
(09:31):
could find his way onto a roster at some point.
I'm sure, if nothing else, practice squad material. Although if
you could show out in the in preseason, then being
just like that, you're you're probably talking about a guy
that that could also get picked up before he put
the practice squad. We'll probably spend more time next week, guys,
with this story. I won't spend a ton of time
(09:54):
get rick Riz coming up here in a few minutes,
but we'll probably spend some more time next week. The
Russell Wilson saga continues. So now he may be retiring.
He's talking. He sounds like he's really deep into conversations
with CBS about joining their pregame show whatever they call it,
NFL Today or whatever, the Sunday morning pregame show and
(10:17):
getting into television full time. First of all, like listen,
you know me, I like to tell you bad things
about Russ sometimes because some of the things he did
here we're not.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
You know, more than most.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
But I will say I think I think that he
would be great in that role. I think he would
be great in that role if if he because he's
easily one of the most articulate guys in the league
and understands television. I can tell you that for a fact,
Like I just I did enjoy talking to him in
(10:49):
our postgame shows on Fox over the years. He understands television,
understands how to engage the camera. Well spoken. Yes, he
speaks and cliches. Back then it was hard to drags.
I mean, I found it a great challenge to get
stuff out of him. But it was. But he was.
But he's very articulate, and he looks good on TV.
He would be I think he'd be a star, especially
if he was willing to do something a lot of
(11:12):
guys aren't. And that's that's be honest. Yeah, you know,
and and tell you what he sees. But damn, I mean,
one thing we do know. The guy studied film like
nobody's business like. He knows the game, and I think
the only downside, honestly, the only downside is, oh we
could we could be robbed of a Gino Russell reunion
in New York.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
That's true.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
That's the only thing that's kind of a bummer. It
also makes me wonder if the Jets said, yeah, thanks,
but no thanks. Yeah, that's right because Gino kind of
pushed for him.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
If you're not getting a job with the Jets, that
is the ultimate death knell of your career, that.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
Might be might be a sign, right that you got
to like, hey, it's it's time to call.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
It quits, just hanging up and then also start your
new career.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
Yeah, and I'm kind of there's part of me that's,
i'll be honest with you, a little bit bump for him.
He was on a Hall of Fame trajectory, and I
think that is just completely off the table now. I
don't think there's any chance that happens, which is unfortunate
because you know, you like your guys and he's a
Hall of Fame. He was the super Bowl champion quarterback.
Here we have two of those. Sam Darnold's one, he's
(12:16):
the other. I would have loved to have seen him,
you know, find his way to the Hall of Fame.
Despite everything that happened, how it ended here somebody somebody
mentioned the other day, I think it was to this morning,
to Twitter, to Corbyn like maybe it'd be he signed
the one day contract, retire Seahawk whatever. I don't know
if we're there yet, No, I don't. I don't know. Now.
One half of the issue, maybe one third of it.
(12:41):
Jody was involved too, but it was mostly him going
to Jody and telling him what he wanted, telling her
what he wanted. Pete's gone, John still here. This organization
is first class in terms of how they handle things.
And I can think and see the scenario in which
they would they forgive and forget pretty quick. You know,
(13:03):
Marshawn didn't leave on the best of terms. Sharman didn't
leave on the best of terms, you know, and said
some things in the way. All those things, those guys
have all been welcomed back. Hell, you know, they're they're
part of the Organs, they're on the field, they're hanging around.
I mean, they're there. They've been welcomed back.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Hey, you could throw Michael Bennett and.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Yeah, Michael Michael Bennett. You know, I'm reading a book
during Pete stuff and how he's you know what, Yeah,
all those guys, so maybe they would, and I think
it would be right if they did, it'd be kind
of good. But we may not be there yet with us.
We'll get more of that maybe the next week. But
if he does retire, hell of a career for a
guy that was picked as a short quarterback out of
Wisconsin via NC State in the third round. Came in.
(13:43):
Honestly brings back memories he watching him in twenty twelve
in this very rookie mini caamp type setting and we're like,
whoa that dude can spin it like this dude can?
I mean, I didn't none of us needed to be
humillin and and to see what this guy looked like
throw in the football and then obviously ends up playing
the job from Matt flann In and training camp. So
(14:04):
all right, when we come back, we'll check in the
Voice of the Mariners, Rick Riz will join us. Can't
wait to talk to Rizzy about the weekend that's coming
up with Randy Johnson, the homestand and everything else Mariners wise.
In his last season, Rick Riz next.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
From the r and R Foundation Specialist broadcast studio. Now
back to Ian FURNESZ powered by Seattle's closest sports book
Snow call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio ninety
three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
All right, we're back and you hear the music. You
thank Mariner Baseball. They're back in town for what will
be a glorious weekend weather wise, coming off a five
and one road trip and oh five and one fifty
one seems to kind of match up well. On the
Beacon Plumbing Hotline, I'm at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center.
He's getting ready for a broadcast tonight after a few
(15:06):
days off. Our friend, the legendary Mariner broadcast. So the
voice of the Manners, Rick Riz is with us. Hi, Rick,
how are you hey?
Speaker 5 (15:15):
I And how you doing? Buddy?
Speaker 6 (15:16):
I love your numerology there five one fifty one. Randy
gonna retires number tomorrow night. It's gonna be it's gonna
be a lot of fun. He was, he was something special.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
I'm gonna get to Randy in a second. I do
want to just check in with you a little bit.
It's we haven't had you on him for for a
long time since last season you announced it's your last
year broadcasting, uh, which you know you deserve some time
to relax, uh and retire and just maybe enjoy baseball
without calling a game. But I know you love and
have a passion for it. But you know, for someone
(15:47):
like me and others in our area that just listen
to you for so many years, it's bittersweet happy for you,
but we'll be sad we won't hear your voice after
this season. Uh. I guess my question is how do
you approach this last year as a broadcaster knowing that
this is it. You get one more chance to do
something you love and you've done for decades.
Speaker 6 (16:09):
Yeah, it's been really something kind of melancholy.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
You know.
Speaker 6 (16:12):
I'm trying to take in every situation, every game, everywhere
I go and take a mental snapshot of it and
just kind of file it away because I think I'm
going to be a wreck at the end of the year.
You know, I've been doing this for so long, and
I love what I've done for so long, for fifty
two years because I got to include the eight years
in the minor leagues and forty one here and three
(16:34):
in between with the Tigers, so I'm just enjoying as
they go along. I'm kind of pumping the brakes because
i know the end is, you know, coming up. That
light at the end of Tunne is really bright. But
i just want to find out what the next chapter
is in my life. At the age of seventy two,
I feel pretty good and I've been fortunate and dodged
a few bullets of a few years ago with an
(16:55):
exit that I had. So i want to spend more
time with my grandkids. I want to get on a
plane when I want to get on a plane, you know,
do some traveling, and so I'm looking forward to the
next chapter. But I'm still going to be around. I'm
not going anywhere. I'm going to stay right here. I
still want to do stuff whatever the Mariners want me
to do, as far as with the alumni group or
(17:15):
if they want me to talk to people up in
the suites or special events and things like that, I'm
still going to be here.
Speaker 5 (17:22):
But I'm taking in.
Speaker 6 (17:24):
It's possible to say this every pitch, I'm taking in,
every pitch of the season. I'm going to savor every
drop of the year.
Speaker 1 (17:32):
Rick. One of the things that I've listen I love
your call. I just when I hear your voice, it
sounds like Mirror's baseball. It sounds like summer. And I
think for some of us that just gives us a
great feeling inside of us. But one of the things
is that, just as someone in the business, I've always
appreciated about you, I think that you know, you just
mentioned it. You had eight years in the minor leagues,
(17:53):
and yeah, to go through the grind and then to
get to the major leagues. To get to that level,
you work with a guy and Gary Hill, that has
called everything imaginable at the lowest of levels as well.
And now Gary's doing a great job next to you
in the booth up there. He deserves everything that he gets.
I always kind of felt like you appreciated the job
as much, if not more than most because you had
(18:14):
to work to get there.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
Oh.
Speaker 6 (18:17):
Absolutely, And I'm glad I wrote that up because you know,
I would see guys when I first got here in
nineteen eighty three complain about a flight even though though
we were traveling commercial, you know, And I just reminded myself,
I just sat there and if somebody would get upset
with Lee pellokutas are traveling sectary because.
Speaker 5 (18:35):
The plane was late or something like that.
Speaker 6 (18:37):
I reminded myself, Hey, just a couple of years ago,
I'm riding a dog on bus for eighteen hours from Memphis,
Tennessee to Orlando, Florida, you know, with twenty seven guys,
and I had two seats to myself behind Felipe Alou,
you know, the manager of the team, and Dave Hosteler
and John Rudy were two huge guys. They had to
(18:59):
sit next to one another for eighteen hours ago. So
I just reminded myself of that, and it kind of
puts things in perspective. I started as a clubhouse guy
making two hundred bucks a month doing three inings of
play by play in nineteen seventy five and Alexander Luisiana
so hot and humid down there. But it's all about
the journey, and I stayed with it. I still believed
(19:21):
myself for some reason. The end, I gave myself ten years,
and I said, if I don't make it in ten years,
then I got good to get a job, you know.
And thank god, Daveney House came along and hired me
in nineteen eighty three, after eight years of the Mior
leagues and it was the best thing that ever happened
to me. I was I just wanted to do one
year in the big leagues.
Speaker 5 (19:40):
That was my goal.
Speaker 6 (19:41):
And here I'm doing forty fourth year, you know, three
with the Tigers, forty one with the Marys. Then I
went to Detroit and David got me back. So I
owe him so much. And it's been a heck of
a journey. And I tell kids that find out what
your passion is and make that a career, no matter
what it is. Know, mine happened to be baseball and broadcasting.
(20:02):
I want to be the next Louis Aparicio growing up
in Chicago. Then I saw a slider three years in
college playing ball in Southern Illinois and the JB team,
and I thought my head, my head baseball coach Ag
Jones and I both agreed we I ought to go
into broadcasting.
Speaker 5 (20:16):
So it's.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
You're broadcaster, sir. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (20:25):
He was great.
Speaker 6 (20:26):
We'd be get great friends after I left there.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
Oh man, he was awesome.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
And well, it's I can relate. I can relate. Riding
a bus is if you if you have a goal
and you have a passion for something, if if my
buddy Mike Benton's listening. He understands he might be the
only guy along with myself and you that understand riding
a bush. Goldie knows this. He was in the minors.
Like when you're riding the bus and you're making no money,
but you're doing something you love. Sometimes it's the best
(20:53):
of themes. Sometimes it's the best. It also takes you
appreciate what comes later in life too.
Speaker 6 (20:56):
So no doubt about it, no doubt. But there are
times were and Amarillo or in Memphis, and I knew
I was going to be on that dog on bus
for ten hours or twelve hours or eighteen hours.
Speaker 5 (21:07):
I stood there with my pillow.
Speaker 6 (21:10):
At the door and go, oh, no, I really want
to go in because I'm trapped in that tube for
ten hours, you know. So I get on along with
Tim Rains and all the other guys, Tim Wallack and Charloie.
Then and we get on the bus and we're all
in the same boat doing the same thing. We have
all our shared our same dreams, whether I was a broadcaster,
(21:30):
or the players that were on the bus, or Felipe
who our manager of Billy Gardner, Larry Manarth Well, the
same dream of you know, getting the big leagues, and
we shared that journey together. And to this day, you know,
I'm still good friends with guys. I spend time with them.
My legs Donny Reynolds, Harold's older brother, was my roommate
in Amarillo, Texas. And Rusty Gerhard another roommate of mine
(21:51):
and Amorillo. We're still close friends and we still keep
in touch. So you hang on to those friendships, and
you hang on to your hopes and dreams, and you
thank the Good Lord for giving you an opportunity to
finally get to.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
The big leagues.
Speaker 1 (22:04):
You know.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
So it's been a great journey.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
And we thank him for having you as our voice
for so many years. Rick Riz joining us here on
the Beaconplent Hotline. Well over your five decades of calling games,
you've seen all the greats in the in the last
you know, half century or so that have come through
this great game. And one of those will be honored
this weekend. Randy Johnston twenty two year Big league career,
three hundred and three wins, maybe the last three hundred
game winner we see. I mean that that may be
(22:29):
a number that we don't get to again. One hundred
and thirty of those wins came in Seattle during his
ten years with the Mariners. I remember when he got
traded here by from the expos I was working for
Bruce King at Como back then, many years ago, and
I was like, who's this big length he got? Yeah,
this this big length, Yeah, coming in. But when somebody
comes up to you and says, Rick, what do you remember?
(22:50):
What is Randy Johnson?
Speaker 8 (22:51):
Who?
Speaker 1 (22:51):
What do you remember about? Randy Johnson comes to your
mind first.
Speaker 6 (22:56):
A guy who threw one hundred miles an dollar and
didn't know where it was going, you know, and and
then he figured it out. But I want to tell
you a quick story. I don't know how much time
we have, but we all on we heard about the trade. Yeah,
we heard about the trade. And then we went to
New York and we're sitting in the bar at the
Grand High Hotel at forty second eluts there, Daveney House
and myself and Kevin Kreman and Jim Lefever, and we
(23:19):
heard about the trade. Mark Langston's going to the Montreal
Expose and we go who'd we get? I mean, Randy Johnson,
you know, his outstanding pitcher. We got excuse me, Mark
Langston was an outstanding pitcher going to established star and
we go Jimmy goes, well, we got Randy Johnson, Brian
Holman and Gene Harrison, Dave and I Kevin looked at
other who these.
Speaker 5 (23:40):
Guys nobody knew who they were. They didn't know who
they were.
Speaker 6 (23:44):
Randy didn't know who he was, you know, or was
going to be, you know, until he had a little
chance to meeting with Dolan, Ryan and uh. But but
Jim leaf Fever said, you know, our scouts said they
really liked these guys. And Brian Holman was the most
established guy. He was really he had a near perfect
game twenty six up, twenty six down in April of
nineteen ninety. But to answer your question, Randy Johnson was
(24:07):
the most dominant pitcher I've ever seen take the mound
for the Seattle Mariners. When he was on the mound
and he was Randy Johnson, it was a wind day.
It was like, gave me the ball. He was old school.
He could have pitched back in the nineteen teens, the twenties,
the thirties, the forties with all those guys.
Speaker 5 (24:25):
He wasn't afraid.
Speaker 6 (24:26):
To, you know, give you a bow tie up and
in and set you down. And he did that in
the All Star Game, had fun with John Crogg and
Larry Walker, but he just wanted to do one thing
and that was win a ball game for the fans.
And when he found out he could control that fastball
and came up with mister Snappy the slider, he became
a Hall of Fame pitcher. And he had a meeting
(24:48):
with Nolan Ryan and he threw in the bullpen for
Nolan and Nolan said, man, you're six ten, but you're
throwing up hill and Randy said, what, I'm six ten, mount,
I'm throwing down hills.
Speaker 9 (25:00):
No.
Speaker 6 (25:00):
When he watched him warm up his right foot, his
front foot, he landed on his heel, so he said,
Nolan said, you're kind of throwing up and then down.
He said, I want you to land on the palm
of your foot. And now you're coming down. You're using
that six' ten. Frame you're coming down with that, fastball
and all of a, sudden everything, changed you, know For,
(25:22):
Randy and all of a, sudden the fastball had. Control
he could throw it where he wanted, to and sometimes
he wanted to throw it hide inside to certain, guys
and along came The slider and became A hall Of fame.
Pitcher so he gave us. HOPE i, mean when we
lost two games In New york in The American League Division,
series in the best of five. Series you, know we
(25:44):
lost that second game in fifteen Innings Jim labort sait
a home run off Of Tim.
Speaker 5 (25:49):
Belcher and then late.
Speaker 6 (25:50):
At, NIGHT i, mean we didn't Leave Yankee stadium and
think about two o'clock in the, morning had to fly
all the way. Home at about three hours into the,
flight it was pitch, black AND i walked to the
front of the plane AND i saw somebody to get
up and walk towards. Me it Was Luke, padella and
lud just looked at me AND i didn't say a,
word and he looked at.
Speaker 5 (26:06):
Me he, Said, rick we're gonna win this. Thing AND i.
Speaker 6 (26:08):
Swear to, GOD i THOUGHT i saw flames coming out
of his, eyes AND i, said, yeah we Got Randy
Gode Brown. Knight SO I randy gave us. Hope we
needed to win the next night otherwise it was all.
Over And randy won the next, NIGHT i believe it
was seven to, four and he, said you, know, guys
we're going to win the. Night and Then edgar Won
game four with two home, runs a three run home
(26:29):
run and a grand slam after we were down five.
Nothing and Then game five came. Along edgar had the
game winning, double but it Was randy who came in
just two days after he started in Won game three.
Speaker 5 (26:41):
And relief in the.
Speaker 6 (26:41):
Ninth andy struck after side in the, ninth didn't give
up a run in the, eleventh but that's when in
the bottom of the, Eleventh joey had a. Bunt bay,
Said junior had a single And edgar had the biggest
hit in our, history had doubled down the left of the.
Line i'm still, laughing smiling BECAUSE i, SAID i could
still See junior running third with a winning. Run but
it Was Randy johnson who said give me the, ball
(27:02):
and he went to lou before the ball game said
if you need, Me i'm, ready and, man he. Was
he was ready when he came. In you Remember ian
when he came in from the, bullpen it was like rock.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
Stuff it was. Music was one of one of the
most thousand. Fans wasn't it one of the most chilling
moments In seattle sports?
Speaker 5 (27:21):
Ever, yeah like it was just no doubt about.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
IT i mean it was just thinking about to this,
DAY i get. Chills it was, unreal.
Speaker 6 (27:27):
Unreal remember the scene when he was bigger than life
and And i'm going to tell him WHEN i see him.
Speaker 5 (27:33):
Tonight i've always looked up to, You.
Speaker 6 (27:35):
Randy i'm five to, seven you, know and see the
showed ABOUT I but remember the Movie Major league when
Wild thing comes in music and everything that was that
was real. Life it Was Randy johnson coming in out
of the bullpen down the leftfield line of The kingdom
to take on The yankees. There and we owe him
(27:57):
so much for uh that man. Season without that year
and what those guys did when they did and how
they did, it and we wouldn't be, here, No and
then ninety five team saved baseball And seattle And randy
was no pun intended a big reason.
Speaker 5 (28:12):
Why you, know.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Ninety five he was eighteen and. Two we just talked,
about you know me eighteen and. Two in ninety seven
he was twenty and. FOUR i, mean those are just
those numbers are like every time he took the mound
as as a ball, club those guys must have felt
like we are going to, win like you, like the
pitching staff here right now is. INCREDIBLE i, mean the
(28:34):
guys you have right now are unreal and you probably
feel like in some ways the same, way but not
to that. Level when he took the mound when he
was in his, prime it was, like this is a, win,
right this is going to.
Speaker 5 (28:44):
Be well and is no doubt about.
Speaker 6 (28:46):
It it was, like LIKE i, said it was wind
day With randy on the. MOUNTAIN a lot of, times you,
know When randy would strike out side in the top
of the first in he'd come in the dugout and
tell the, guys just give me a run and it's.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
Over just give me a.
Speaker 6 (28:58):
Run and and with that lineup they gave about five or,
six you, know When junior in the lineup In buner
And blowers And Tino, martinez a Little joeycore and. Everybody but,
yeah he was something really. Fine and remember in ninety
six he had back, surgery, yeah you, know and then
he came back from that to become still the dominant,
pitcher still more strikeouts than ANY i think left handed
(29:21):
pitcher in the. History second most Strikeoutskind Nolan ryan three hundred.
Wins he got his three hundredth win as A San Francisco,
giant And i'll never forget when The giants came in.
Town right after he won his three hundredth. Game we
were In Henry genzali's, office who at the time was
a visiting clubhouse. Guy it was Just, brandy myself And
Daveney house and we talked for about forty five minutes
(29:43):
or an, hour and he just spilled his, guts you, know,
saying you know how much it meant to be here In.
Seattle and he, admitted you know that he had to
pitch with a chip on his, shoulder which he. Did you,
know on the day he. Pitch he didn't look at,
him he didn't talk to. Him but that's What randy
needed to go out there every day to Be Randy.
Speaker 5 (30:03):
Johnson so you left him.
Speaker 6 (30:05):
Alone i'd walk through the club, Outs i'd See randy
sitting there with his headphones, on staring at his feet
or staring at his. Locker but he was just getting,
ready going in his mind what he needed to. Do
and then the next day he was.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
Fine he was.
Speaker 6 (30:18):
Great after a, win you're always pretty, happy but thank,
goodness we Got Randy johnson in that trade For Mark
langston in nineteen eighty, nine.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
And in two thousand and nine that career came to
an end with that three hundred and third win when
it was all said and done with The San Francisco.
Giants but he gets fifty one retired this. Weekend it'll
be a special emotional. WEEKEND i know you'll be a
big part of. That we should talk quickly about the
baseball team right now they come. Back you mentioned five
and one. TRIP i, listen there's a million GUYS i
could talk. About i'm going to ask you about one
(30:48):
guy in the final couple of minutes, here and that
would be. Sick thank you very, MUCH i, said second.
BASEMAN i, mean what a. Revelation did you see this
coming of what he's doing right?
Speaker 5 (30:59):
Now heck, no heck.
Speaker 6 (31:01):
NO i saw a guy who ended the next year
trying to get through his first major league, season who,
battled and you know he's so. Talented he hit two
eleven last year with four home. RUNS i think he
had twenty four RBI's one stolen. Base but you, see
the talent was. There and then The Adam JUDE i
think wrote a really good article about him in today's
(31:22):
paper or yesterday's paper about you, know he changed his.
Diet he really worked, out AND i talked to him
at spring training AND i, said what do you do
during the. Offseason he went back home To pittsburgh and
he worked, hard especially on his, defense on his, footwork
and now we're seeing him make some really nice plays
on the other side of second. Base he is, stronger
he's making a strong throw over the first. Base BUT
(31:44):
i love the way his approach is at the. Plate
there is no moment that is too big for this.
Guy he slows the game. Down he's going to put
the bat on the, ball and he hits left handed.
Pitching he's got three home runs on the, ear two against,
lefties and then in the big moment from the seventh and,
nine AND i think he has nineteen RBIs on the
team to lead the ball. Club he slows things, down
(32:07):
he hits the ball up the, middle doesn't try to
pull or hits the ball the other. Way it's it
hard up the, middle or he gets that soft basin
in the left center. Field those count. Two those are.
Big he had a big two run single the other.
Day so he just knows who he is and goes
out there every day and does his, job and he
does it very.
Speaker 5 (32:27):
Well So i'm so impressed with this.
Speaker 6 (32:29):
Kid he's going to be An All star real soon
and we could check off that box for a long.
Speaker 5 (32:34):
Time this kid's going to be at second base for a,
long long.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Time six game home Stand stars Tonight Kansas city In,
town then a really tough series against The Atlanta. Brave
should be. Fun Randy johnson weekend retirement. Tomorrow rick will
be a big part of. It, rick have a great
call this. Weekend we'll catch up again before the end
of the. SEASON i really appreciate you covering out some
time on this the opening day of the, Series so
thank you so.
Speaker 6 (32:54):
Much anything you need in really appreciate.
Speaker 5 (32:57):
It take, care. Everybody we'll see you at the. Ballpark

indeed gorgeous weekend coming. Up and you know what that.
Means this is weird because there's a couple of things
going On saturday that is just strange to have good
weather for and they're actually the same. Day because for
a long time we WERE i would go out AND
(34:02):
i would Do Windomere cup coverage when we were carrying
those games with a guy that my next guest knows very,
Well Bob, rondo and we would do. That it would
be in the pouring down rain and then there would
be what we would call a sloppier muddy track down
On emerald downs for opening day as well that First
saturday Of. May but no such. Luck great weather for
The Windermere cup and great weather for opening day At
Emerald downs tomorrow and it's Also Derby, day the one
(34:23):
hundred and fifty Second Kentucky, derby which coincides with opening
day At Emerald, downs and you can wager on it.
There And joe with you From Emerald downs joins me
right now on The Beacon plumbing. Hotline Hi, joe how.
Speaker 10 (34:33):
Are You Ian? Day thanks for the. Opportunity, yeah we're
we're having our thirtieth anniversary In.
Speaker 5 (34:41):
June if you can believe.
Speaker 10 (34:42):
That you've, been you, know following us and promoting, Us
we appreciate. That and, yeah a lot of history here
At Emerald downs and the weather On. Saturday thanks for
a great Opening day crowd and then people coming out
and watching and wagering on the. Derby we'll have it
on our big and a bunch of monitors and you,
know and speaking of The, Derby Mark glatt is going
(35:05):
to become the first former or Current Emerald downs trainer
to start a horse in The Kentucky. Derby. Yeah mark
is so. Happy, yeah he trained so. Happy. Mark mark's,
Father ron was big in the, game And spokane moved
over and trained At Long acres And mark grew up
under him In auburn, actually and he was a good
(35:28):
trainer here in the late, nineties but, boy he has
done super in Southern. California he's won meetings down there
At Santa nita and Del mar and thirty six great
at stakes wins For Mark. Glatt we still think of
him as, young but, boy he's got a great resume
now and so. Happy he won The Santa Anita derby
in Early april and in early derby, wagering so. Happy
(35:53):
fifteen to one morning line is down to six to
one is the second. Favorite so lots of people like
him and we're so rooting for him And Mark laud On,
saturday so that's a great local. Route but it's Opening
day At Emerald downs. Too, yeah let's race at two. Pm,
yeah we're gonna have great weather and we're coming off
a really good. Season we got a similar stake, schedule
(36:14):
and we got two really great returning stars as far
as horses coming back And sluiced His whiz and A
Lohaw breeze and just, hey opening day speaks for, itself
and it Does.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
Joe you, KNOW i think we talked about it last
year a little, bit you, know where the state of
the of the horse racing world, is and there was
a lot of questions and there's some things you guys
had to work. Through AND i just saw the, STATS
i mean from last. Season your your average mutual handle
was up forty nine percent last. Year average on track
at tenants up ten percent last. YEAR i know part
(36:47):
of the rest of the, country a lot of parts
are struggling with horse. Racing seems like business is going
really well At Emerald. Downs what do you attribute that.
Speaker 10 (36:54):
To, well you, know our promotions are so, popular and
you know some of them are kind of, wacky but
they catch on with the The Wiener, dogs The, bulldogs
The Core east and the T rex people dress up
in like four hundred people in T rex costumes and
the third Of July Fireworks Spectacular Grandfather races and those
(37:18):
have been growing in. Popularity but so, yeah we just
get tons of families out and actually we let the
kids race down the track about three times this summer,
too and there's like two hundred kids out there running
and they all get ice cream. Afterwards so just a
lot of family fun out. There and as you mentioned,
that The bettingham was up a lot last. Year, unfortunately,
(37:40):
racing you, know ceased in Northern california in twenty twenty,
five so we got several trainers up from there and
our field size was. Better so we're working on that
again this. Year but you, know, yeah people come to
the races here and that is really fun to have
a good atmospear like, that and you, know and let's face,
(38:03):
it the weather Between june And september is really good
here in Western, washington so were the benefit of, that
and we're just looking to build on last. Year you
better believe.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
It, YEAH i just think, LISTEN i you, Know i'm
a fan of my wife AND i and a. Family
we come out at least a couple times a year
and just kind of making an. Afternoon it's just. FUN i,
mean food's, great drinks are, great atmosphere is, fun it's
relaxed and then then it's not relaxed for about two
minutes and then it's relaxed. Again it's it's a way
AND i JUST i think what you mentioned too is
(38:34):
it's it's a family friendly event environment. Too tell people
if it's a, weekend, well most of the DATES i
believe are on. WEEKENDS i was just looking through. It it
looks like basically What Friday saturdays And sundays for the
most part this, year starting On may you Go saturdays
only until The, sunday which just Looks Mother's day and
away you. Go but, uh for folks that want to
bring the, Kids, HEY i got a bunch of, Kids
(38:54):
CAN i come out? There what do you have going
on on a weekly on A saturday or A sunday
basis for? Kids?
Speaker 10 (39:00):
Oh you, know we have so many family fun days
out in our park, area which is just north of the,
PADDOCK i mean easy to, find and we've, got you,
know bounce houses and pony rides and face painters so
many weekends during the, season and the pony gals they
bring their horses up near the, paddock and the thoroughbreds
(39:21):
that are racing or saddle down in the paddock and
then get walked up the ramp towards the track and
then the pony pony person takes the reins and they
warm the horses. Up and those ponies are right on
the other side of the fence and they're just very,
docile and the kids can even pad a pony there
with a Real thoroughbred race horse when they're waiting for
(39:44):
the action to. Begin but, yeah the park area is
just full of fun and there's plenty of free parking on.
Site so there's. That kids under twelve are free, now
so let's SEE i should get that age right this.
Speaker 1 (40:00):
Year no kids are.
Speaker 8 (40:02):
Free.
Speaker 10 (40:03):
Yeah check out the website At emeraldowns dot com for
all of the family Fun sundays And. Saturdays so uh,
yeah opening day just a couple of days or just. Tomorrow,
yeah we better get ready for.
Speaker 9 (40:15):
That, yeah you.
Speaker 1 (40:16):
Should you should get. Ready joe with you join us
From Emerald. Downs, joe you mentioned that it always coincides
with the with The Kentucky. Derby The derby's gonna be
run at three fifty seven or So pacific, time so
late afternoon here on The west. COAST i Believe renegade
is a betting favorite one of The Arkansas. Derby. Uh
this is fun because if you're you guys show the
derby out, there you can wager on the derby At Emerald.
(40:38):
Downs so folks coming out, there let's do what we always.
Do let's handicap the. Derby we you did talk about
our local, favorite and that of course Me Mark, Glatt
he's got so happy running in the. Ray so whether
it be So happy Or renegade Was joe with you With,
joe you know WHAT i. LIKE i like to give
me a little, exactly give me a. Box exactly, here,
Buddy here we.
Speaker 11 (40:55):
Go we.
Speaker 10 (40:55):
GOT i haven't been too far off the last few.
Years Footing winter a couple of years. Ago but there's
a horse that's raced only In, japan Dan On bourbon
D A N O n Dan On bourbon number. Fourteen he's,
undefeated and he's by An american sire who's really doing,
well a Young american sire Named. Maxfield so this horse
(41:18):
has won easily all three. Starts he's run fast In.
Japan japanese horses the last five to seven years have
really performed well around the. World they haven't won The
Kentucky derby. Yet Forever Young got beat a couple of
noses a couple of years. Ago BUT i think Dan
On bourbon at around fifteen to one is a good.
Speaker 1 (41:40):
Value.
Speaker 10 (41:41):
Bet i'm going to have some money on. Him i'm
certainly going to have some money On So, happy And
i'm going to be rooting for him And Mark. Glatt
but Boy renegade threw the number one. Post he had
a tremendous win in The Arkansas. Derby but the one
post for a, closer there's going to be all these
horses getting out in front of him while the, ride you,
know kind of waits and bides his. Time so he
(42:02):
has really got his work cut out for. Him you,
know when there's ten horses in a, race he got
to pass, nine that's. Different but there's going to be
twenty in. Here So i'm a little against renegade from
the number one. Post So dan On bourbon and so
happy for me in The Kentucky, DERBY i love.
Speaker 1 (42:20):
It, hey just real fast BEFORE i let you. GO
i got about a minute left, Here, Joe just what
does it? Mean the post? Position and you just kind
of touched on a little. Bit but how important is?
Speaker 5 (42:28):
That?
Speaker 10 (42:29):
Well, again you, know the number one post in a
twenty horse, field if you don't get out of the
gate fairly quickly and established, position say toward the front
or mid, pack there's just so much traffic that your
rider has to. Negotiate and looking At lucky as a
horse that was the favorite in the derby about ten years,
(42:52):
ago a little bit more and he had the one.
Post oh and he just had a rough. Trip then
he came back two weeks later and won The preakness.
Easily he was probably the best horse in The, derby
but the one post heard him and renegadees a. Closer
so you, know middle of the pack is. Good if
you have some, speed you know you're usually able to
(43:12):
get positioned because it's a long run to the first.
Turn so if you've got some natural speed that really.
Helps and other than, that you do want to save
some ground towards the. Inside you don't want to be
five six seven eight wide on both. Turns that's going
to take it out of. You so the jockeys have
(43:33):
a real task in front of them to get their
horse a good trip and might pick down on bourbon
and so happy have that what you call tactical speed
that can keep them probably ahead of at least two
thirds of the. Field so they should have a chance
to have a good trip in there and run their.
Speaker 1 (43:52):
Best min juleb, tomorrow, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 10 (43:56):
Min, Julibs Kentucky derby will be serving those just. Yeah
as you, mentioned a lot of one time a year
fans come out for The Kentucky, derby get dressed. Up
we do have a hat contest and you don't really
have to find, Anybody we'll find. You we'll get their
picture taken and there's some nice prizes awarded for a
hat and best dressed Contests tomorrow At Emerald downs Our
(44:20):
derby day tradition as.
Speaker 1 (44:22):
Well can gates open at what? Time?
Speaker 10 (44:23):
Again gates open at eleven. Am first ross goes at two.
Pm we'll run three thoroughbred races and then take a you,
know about a forty minute break or so to get
ready for The Kentucky, derby and then we'll resume racing
after The derby's.
Speaker 1 (44:38):
Over joe great. Stuff emeraldowns dot com for more, information
have a great. Meet we'll talk before The, Preakness i'm,

ducks since twenty, seventeen The oilers have been to back
to BACK Nhl. Finals remember The Florida panthers have won

to the. Playoffs oilers are out in the first. Round
speaking of being out in the first, round how About,
dallas like probably A Stanley cup. Contender, yeah, oh he
had to Play minnesota in the first, round knocked out
In game, six and So minnesota moves on To round.
Two and this is The, yes they gotta fix. This
(46:02):
they gotta fix. Uh they will take On colorado in Round.
Speaker 12 (46:06):
That's the three best teams In, Dallas, Minnesota. Colorado in
my humble.
Speaker 1 (46:10):
ESTIMATION i would agree with you one THOUSAND. Nba speaking Of,
minnesota The timberwolves move. On they Beat denver In game,
six also In. Minnesota one game was In, minneapolis the
other one the hockey games In Saint. Paul so The
twin cities were full last. Night So, denver you'll getchen company.
Out sixers Win game six to. Fourth game seven In
(46:31):
boston coming up, tomorrow The knicks will eliminate The. Hawks

Hour number two of the, show where The Virginia Mason
Athletics center Is day one of The seahawks two day
rookie mini camp in which draft picks signed undrafted free
agents and then, oh let's see roughly fifty other players
and we're just invited camp invite ees are all here
hanging out and getting a chance to look around and
see what it's all like in THE. Nfl and if
(47:32):
you're a draft, pick you'll be back here for training.
Camp if you're assigned free, agent you'll be back here
for training camp more than. Likely along with some guys
that played here last. Year Ricky, white the third is,
here and there's a couple others that are out here
as well that were that were players that were here
last year on the practice squad for the most, part
(47:52):
Like Ricky, white for, example two. Games there's a, cure
a crude number in terms of who can be, here
in terms of how many weeks you're on the fifty
three man. Roster that's WHY i, say like A Jalen
milrose not out. Here they you, know like it, was,
well Maybe milroll come out and throw the ball around
a little. Bit Uh, no they brought three other quarterbacks
in so but all the draft picks are. Here Julian,
Neal Jadarian, Price Bud, Clark Andre, Fuller Michael, Dansby Bo.
(48:17):
Stevens we had on the show this, Week Emmanuel henderson
And Devin. Eastern they're all here out there working out
in the. Sunshine seventy. Degree, Yeah i'm hoping praying for
this kind of weather when we get to training camp
as opposed to eighty, five ninety ninety, five et.
Speaker 3 (48:33):
Cetera, yeah you're pretty.
Speaker 1 (48:34):
Hot give me. That give me THAT i should mention
our thousand dollars cash whord a contest going on right.
Now we got to ninety three three K jr dot. Com
this hour's word is deposit as a. Deposit that thousand
dollars in your cash better, deposit so you should, well
let's just go spend. It you can always do that as.
Well we're gonna check in coming up at one twenty
with our good Friend danny, O'Neil the Dang. Apostrophe kind
(48:58):
of an interesting week all the way, around the kind
of to kind of spin around And, Andrews i'll lean
on you will wrap things up a little. Bit first of,
all we'll just get to The mariners real. Fast nice.
Week they end up going five and one on the road.
Trip they come home at five. Hundred we, heard AND
i didn't get a chance to. React on the other,
side we Had Rick rizon in the last. Segment if he,
missed it'd be. Podcast rick was. Sensational oh AND i
(49:21):
when he was talking to like he it's funny BECAUSE
i hadn't even said one guy the Name Cole young,
yet but that's WHAT i wanted to talk.
Speaker 3 (49:28):
About he knew exactly where you're going with it, well.
Speaker 1 (49:30):
And and you, know like it's just What Cole young
has done and answered maybe, questions, right would you, say
answer some questions like who's your second basement for the,
FUTURE i, mean take away the RBIs in six straight
games and all. That just he has been consistently really
good all. Year, yes, Right over the last thirteen, games
(49:51):
he's hitting three eighty, three eight, runs two, doubles a home,
run TEN, rbi three, walks two soule in bases and
a nine to TWELVE. Ps that'll do six straight games
with AN, rbi the longest Since gino had one of
that had that in twenty twenty. Three think about that
What cal did last. Year he didn't have RBIs in
six straight, games But gino did it last in twenty
(50:14):
three seasons. AGO i, mean if you want to look at,
war he is fourth among all position, players and in
one point nine wins above, replacement he leads second basement
in that category nine defensive runs, saved which is again we're,
thinking is this guy can you play? Defense he didn't
(50:35):
have a strong, Arm BUT i JUST i think What rick.
Said he was effusive in his, praise AND i think
we're kind of the same, Way like they found their
second basement in the. Future actually he's not the. Future
they found their second basement of the, present and the
future is.
Speaker 3 (50:46):
Here, yeah and he's still only twenty, Two and that's
crazy to.
Speaker 1 (50:48):
Me he's got more pop THAN i thought, too, right
didn't we? Didn't we kind of we wonner about his
like what kind of and you don't have to hit
a home? Runs just you, know how's your exit? Villa
all that fun stuff that they look at these.
Speaker 12 (50:58):
Days so it's interesting BECAUSE i think think that he
had that same thought because last year we all heard
kind of his profile as a prospect was a very
contact dependent. Guy he was very back to ball, skills
less pop than a lot of other big prospects. Nowadays
and it's weird BECAUSE i think when he came up
to The, mariners and when he had, success he seemed
(51:22):
like was trying to portray that he had more power
than he. Did and that's one of the. REASONS i,
think obviously just your first year in major league baseball
that he's trying to. Adjust but his swings seemed long to,
me and he would connect and it would go. Far
AND i think he actually hit the longest home run
of Any mariner last, year so it's kind of showed
that he can still have some. Pop but this year
(51:43):
it kind of seems, like all, right this is the
cool young that we were, advertised the guy that will
put the ball in, play will make really good contact
gap to, gap and then when he gets, one he
really gets, one you know WHAT i, Mean.
Speaker 1 (51:56):
Yeah, yeah, No and IT'S i just it's. Awesome like
it's just one of those things where you're kind of
putting a team together AND i, know we don't want,
to Hear Jerry topotos, say you, know we want to
be you, know contending and good sustainable all those, years
but part of that is to have a roster that's that's,
consistent right and, intact and not having to go out and, say,
okay we got to replace six, positions, right they don't
(52:18):
they know who their second basement. Is obviously the other
side of the left side of the infield has question
marks right in the. Future but you know who your
first basement, is you know your second basement, is you
know your catcher, is you know who your center fielder. Is,
outfield you can. Start we can have debates about who's
where and all. THAT i, Mean, randy but but it's
you've kind of put something nicely together here along the. Way,
okay the other couple of other things to hit. On
(52:40):
first of, all just real quick on The seahawks and,
WELL i think we're gonna hear From Ricky white one forty,
five but we'll probably touch base on a little bit
more on what we're seeing out here at The Virginia
Based Athletic center. Today guys on the field right, now
getting around. There it is nice to see two years
that mill roll here last, year so that was, Fine
but two years ago the quarterbacks at rookie minniecamp were
just did see did see a nice little catch out
(53:01):
of the backfield By jadari And, price albeit shorts and
jersey and no pads and not a lot of, content you,
know but did like didn't look like Didn't boba just
looked as clean as can be and. Smooth thanks for coming,
man he looks. Good, Dang i'm excited to watch him play.
Preseason be. Fine we won't know what he can do until,
preseason like we we really. Won't, yeah AND i pads.
(53:21):
On when you see the pads on and guys actually popping, dues.
Speaker 12 (53:23):
It'll be really his first time in a long time
in his whole career that he'll be like the guy,
guy you know WHAT i.
Speaker 3 (53:29):
Mean, so, yeah you can respond two different.
Speaker 12 (53:32):
Ways you can be, like, Oh i'm you, know there's
a REASON i was a, backup or you, know maybe
it was untapped potential By Notre.
Speaker 3 (53:38):
Dame you never.
Speaker 1 (53:39):
Know, yeah, YEAH i mean it's, yeah it's a whole
different role for. Him along the. Way there's a long discussion,
Yesterday John canzana was on with our morning or afternoon
show With softy And fain And jackson about The blazer's,
ownership and Then Mike farrell wrote a column this morning
and In The times cautionary tale For seahawks New blazer
ownership and all of. THAT i thought there's two things
(54:01):
that were going, on and you guys bought it up
yesterday on The morning you were filling in For ashley
yesterday in The Morning, show the Whole zuckerberg and the
other guy from.
Speaker 3 (54:08):
From by the, way that report has been refuted by.
Speaker 1 (54:11):
Everybody, yes in, fact in fact That Softy anddict did
a great. Job they got a. Guy the first guy
that refuted, IT i, THINK i don't even. Know There's Puck,
sports and There's Front Office, sports and then There's bloomberg
and there's all these but one of the guys that
immediately refuted, it who's a business writer actually From. Seattle,
yeah those guys had them on, yesterday so that that
kind of went out the. Way, listen here's the thing
(54:32):
with with that type of with those, Guys, Zuckerberg, Bezos,
cook who AM i Who i'm Missing, Bill Bill, gates
guys like That. Musk. Yeah, like it's very easy just
to google who's got a you, know who's got net
worth of? Whatever, right the top net worth guys in The,
(54:53):
states and then start making. Connections all they're A West
coast guy or they're you, know in the tech, world
and all Those east. Whatever, right you started connecting some
dots and, go oh this this makes sense or this
doesn't make, sense and all THOSE i get all. That,
listen if if any of those dudes wanted to buy a,
team right and they just could go into their couch
and just pull out loose change to do so with
(55:14):
the billions of, dollars they. Would, yeah they've had plenty of.
Opportunity the only time it's ever really been shot. Down
bezos had an opportunity to buy The washington or wanted
to buy The Washington commanders, famously, right, yeah bought The Washington,
post basically ran that thing into the, ground has destroyed,
that you, know one of the institutional newspapers in our.
Country but, he you, know he and THE nfl said,
(55:35):
no like they went different a different direction with the.
Ownership there's a third. Party canzono did a great job
explaining it. Yesterday it's not Like jody And burt cold
are picking up the phone and taking taking calls from.
People there's a third party that THE i think all
the leagues go. Through in, FACT i talked To canzono
yesterday off last night about some other stuff off the,
air and he was telling me that he asked me
about THE. NHL i, SAID i really don't know what
(55:56):
THE nhl, does but it sounds like a lot of
these leagues do the same. THING, NBA, nfl they have
this this law firm that basically helps broker deals because we're,
TALKING i, mean the amount of money we're talking is
just insane and really in this day and, age by and,
large most, people if you're gonna buy a, team you're
not doing it on your. Own there are a handful that,
(56:18):
can Like Steve bomber. Could If Steve bomber wanted to
buy The seahawks, TOMORROW i bet THE nba would or
THE nfl would let him in the club in a. Second,
yep we haven't heard that at. All he's got the
money and he. Could, again he's one of those guys
that's got stupid money and he could do it just for.
Fun but we haven't heard. That and you, know he's
got his stuff going on with The. Clippers he built
that building down, there or The Into It dome and
all those. THINGS i just don't know if that's an
(56:41):
interest for. Him gates has never expressed an interest in any,
way shape or form of buying a team in any sport.
Anywhere as, Mentioned bezeils just had the one And zuckerberg
feels like he's got his hands. Full AND i DON'T
i don't know how the Way meta is right now
and the layoffs and, stuff, right, yeah but what everyone's
(57:02):
kind of curious about or worried. About you don't want
to get a guy Like Tom dundin in here right,
Right and he's the new owner of The. Blazers AND
i Saw Joe cronin's THE gm for The, blazers and
he had their end of the year press conference, yesterday
AND i was talking to somebody down there that was
covering it because he basically covered up For. Dundon, no
he said it was his fault they didn't bring the
(57:23):
guys in the two way contracts on the road.
Speaker 3 (57:25):
Trip, really why is that the GM's. Decision it's.
Speaker 1 (57:29):
Not he's doing what a good employee. Does he's covering
for his. Guy, yeah he's covering for his. Guy because
here's the. Thing when you're doing shoot arounds of, practices
you want extra. Bodies you want the bodies there looking
at AN nhl roster right now with the scratches they
got like ten, scratches they call, them the black aces
are out, there you, know they working out the extra
goalie all that kind of. Stuff they wanted those guys,
there and, honestly you're a two way. Deal Caleb Love
(57:50):
arizona's one of them that helped them get. There you,
know those guys all actually contributed this. Year he's. Cheap
and so that's the cautionary. Tale AND i think that
that's what worries, me not about The, seahawks to be
honest with, You it worries me about THE. Nba, Yeah
and here's why it worries me about THE. Nba what
if what if we get into a situation where it's
(58:13):
not the group we think it's going to. Be maybe
the money gets out of control in terms of what
they're gonna you know WHAT nba owners are, demanding and
you'd get somebody in here that is a fifteen percent
owner that is also, cheap which Is Tom dundant because
that's what he. Is and then the rest is private
equity and on their investors and they don't do things
(58:36):
the right. WAY i don't worry about The. SEAHAWKS i
think the END i and maybe this is a blind naive.
TRUST i believe THE nfl will do the right thing
with The, seahawks and as Will. JODY i, FRANKLY i
Hope jody has a piece of, it you, KNOW i
hope SHE'S i hope she's still part of. IT i
think she's done a great. JOB i think there's you,
know Since paul passed away and what was, it twenty,
(58:57):
eighteen there's there's no doubt she's been a good steward
for the franchise and she cares about. It SO i
do hope that that happens THE. Nfl THE nfl is
a interesting entity in the sense that they have done
a good job of flushing out bad, owners forcing both
In carolina And, washington forcing bad owners to sell the. Team,
(59:19):
now in both cases it wasn't for being, frugal, cheap
not running the organization top. Flight it was for in one,
CASE i believe a racist comment In, carolina and Obviously
Daniel snyder had all kinds of, issues all kinds of
human resource, issues and, yeah that Was BUT i think
the point is that they were able to do, that
(59:42):
and they did move Those SO i don't worry about The.
SEAHAWKS i worry more ABOUT i, Mean i'm ABOUT i
put a number on it eighty percent sure that if
we get THE nba, back it'll be The oakview group
or one. ROOF i guess as we're calling them, now
there's that twenty. Percent if it's, them AND i know
(01:00:05):
we've we've had the, Conversation i'll look at the text
line four nine four or five. One well about the hockey, team.
Speaker 9 (01:00:09):
How's it had?
Speaker 1 (01:00:09):
Success, yeah and you can point to Ownership sam y
wiki right and say did you make the best decision
with HIGHER, A b OR. C but the one thing
they've never done is skimped and been and been. Cheap
they haven't cut. Corners they've never cut. Corners if you
want to say they've made bad decisions in terms of
(01:00:30):
who they've hired and or fired or what have, you
that's one. Thing Remember sam's not making And todd's not
making the decisions to you, know on player. Personnel that
but the people that they hired. You and so if
you want to go down that, Road i'll dance with
you And i'll, say, YEAH i can't argue with. That
but in terms of what you just, said, yeah they
don't cut, corners So i'd feel good. There but, yeah
(01:00:52):
the other part, is and i'll let you jump in,
here the other part is softy in the middle of the,
Show yesterday's, CHANGE i don't. Care i'll take The blazers
right because ken'sto throughout a number of. Years yeah, soft he,
said it's you, know at the start of the the you,
know six months, ago would you think the chances The
blazers moved To seattle where he said one? Percent he,
says what do you think they are? Now And canzono
(01:01:13):
said Thirty and there's this really in some ways a
complicated dance of that everybody's kind of playing with right
now that If dundon doesn't get what he, wants and
it sounds like The portland politicians are just waiting on
the city council are going to come through with the.
Renovations but it's but maybe that's not what he really,
(01:01:35):
wants you, know like Like Clayton bennett was an interest
like no one ever called his bluff hundred. Percent but
remember he just down the road from we're sitting, here
down by the. Landing Clayton bennett was talking about building a.
Building you, know the city Of rent was all over,
that and but he wanted all kinds of help from the,
state went down and testified at The State we were
there that night At. OLYMPIA i mean this was two
(01:01:56):
thousand and, six fall of, six early, seven and most
even because the session was in so it would have
Been January february o. Seven he didn't want. That he
never wanted. That, now like if they would have come
through and, said, yeah here you, go here's all the,
money go build a, BUILDING i don't know what would have.
Happened because he wanted to move the. TEAM i wonder With,
(01:02:17):
dundon does he want to move The. BLAZERS i, still
for a variety of, REASONS i wouldn't want to see that.
Happen part of it would be he would be the.
Speaker 3 (01:02:27):
Owner that's the main reason for.
Speaker 1 (01:02:28):
Me that's one hundred percent of the. Reason, yes you
don't want that guy owning AN nba team in our.
Speaker 3 (01:02:33):
Town, NO i don't want to know owning anything in our.
Speaker 1 (01:02:35):
TOWN i. DON'T i, mean, FRANKLY i think IT'S i
think it's bad business that this guy owns AN nba
team In, portland right for a team that's on the
up and, Come, like the only way you screw that
thing up is don't pay a, coach which he doesn't
feel appear to be willing to, do and don't pay
your free agents and cut. CORNERS i don't think he's
(01:02:57):
good for THE nba In, portland and my, god he'd
be horrible for. Here, yeah AND i know we're all
desperate to get the team. BACK i get, that BUT
i don't, Know, ANDREWS i don't want to see that.
Speaker 12 (01:03:06):
HERE i honestly believe most people agree with. YOU i
think most people would realize that that you'd be doing
To portland what happened to, Us AND i don't think
people want that kind of relationship with THE, nba even
if the team might start off in the first couple
of years being, better because you wouldn't be an expansion,
team you'd be a relocation and you already would have
(01:03:27):
a roster and all that.
Speaker 3 (01:03:28):
Stuff we've talked about.
Speaker 12 (01:03:28):
That, before but it's it's you want to have you
know you. Don't then it becomes the whole history. Thing
do you Have portland's? History do you Have seattle's? History
like what ends up going on? There it's it's way
too gross and, murky AND i JUST i just want
to clean, start you know WHAT i.
Speaker 1 (01:03:45):
Mean i'm with, You, YEAH i. Think so let me
clarify one. Thing SO i WAS i am as guilty
as anybody to get, this Like, Rimer Oakview group is
not One roof all, Right, okay So One roof is
a different company Than. Oakview One roof is the one
that is trying to become the owners of the, team
And One roof is who we're talking about, with led
(01:04:05):
By Sam. Holloway so they are. Different it's the O's
do we get confused with the o's one? Roof oh?
Few but, yeah it's One roof that is the new
the new company that was established here a couple of months.
Ago so but, yeah The dundan thing is just it's it's.
Ridiculous canzano's painting this picture yesterday was, softy And i'm, like,
wait Move portland To seattle and then eventually give another
(01:04:28):
owner an expansion team In portland and another. Market and
Then nashville gets. MENTIONED i get, it they're renovating the building.
THERE i. Don't everyone's in love With nashville right. Now, well,
hell we have a coffee company in love With nashville right,
now right so who. Knows, okay we'll take quick, break come.
Back danie O'Neil is going to join, us coming up
in just a couple of minutes short, breaks so stick
(01:04:49):
with stick with, us don't go. Anywhere danie O'Neil Dang

just popped back inside SO i can talk to my
Friend danie. O'Neil we got a lot to get. TO
Nfl draft recap gets From Randy, johnson memories from him
(01:05:46):
as well all. THAT i want to start, though with
what you wrote about. YESTERDAY i think it's important to
make note of. This april twenty third was a big
day for.
Speaker 13 (01:05:56):
You why, well the first day it was the last
TIME i decided to quit alcohol so, far it wasn't
the first TIME i, tried but that was the first.
DAY i have not been drunk since that, Day so
nine years of, sobriety and it is a pretty important
moment for me and something that has made opened more
(01:06:19):
possibilities in my life THAN i thought and something THAT
i feel it's just it's been a huge weight that
was lifted off of. Me So i'm pretty grateful for
all of.
Speaker 1 (01:06:27):
THAT i think this is a conversation and we'll get
to sports in a, second BUT i think it probably
there's probably somebody out there that could be helped by.
It when did you know that you had to take that?
Step and you said it wasn't the first.
Speaker 13 (01:06:39):
Time, No SO i don't Think i've ever really had
a healthy relationship with. Alcohol And i'm someone who binge
drank WHEN i was a, teenager AND i think that's
pretty common in this country and into, college AND i
did like WHEN i was, YOUNGER i would think of
it as that's just a.
Speaker 11 (01:06:57):
Phase when you black out or you drink too.
Speaker 13 (01:06:59):
Much BUT i think that's that trait or that streak
has really run through the twenty five years THAT i did,
drink AND i tried different measures to moderate my intake of.
Speaker 11 (01:07:14):
Alcohol i'd set.
Speaker 13 (01:07:16):
LIMITS i would think, About, Okay i've got to make
sure THAT i have a full dinner BEFORE i, drink
like all of these things to moderate the.
Speaker 11 (01:07:24):
Process and the truth is.
Speaker 13 (01:07:25):
Is that that works some of the, time but eventually for,
me EVENTUALLY i will allow myself to get to that
point of just extreme. Drunkenness that that's the destination where
it will, eventually not every, time but eventually IF i do.
That and the only thing that worked was really taking
it off the table completely for, me AND i was
(01:07:49):
afraid about. THAT i was afraid, BECAUSE i think in
part BECAUSE i thought it was a sign of weakness to, say,
LOOK i can't control my consumption of, alcohol SO i
need to stop. It AND i think it was a
recognition of, reality like that's HOW i see it, now
and that ONCE i made that, step it it wasn't,
easy but things started to feel so much, better AND i,
(01:08:11):
realized and this was how much SHAME i was carrying
around from. IT i was hiding how MUCH i was,
drinking from from my, spouse from other, PEOPLE i was
drinking by, myself and these were all things that were
signifiers of. THAT i recognized it was a, problem BUT i.
Wasn't it took me a bit to get to the
(01:08:33):
point Where i'm, Like, OKAY i need to.
Speaker 11 (01:08:35):
Stop and really it was WHEN.
Speaker 13 (01:08:37):
I got the fear of what would happen IF i
continued drinking was greater than the FEAR i had about stopping.
DRINKING i knew that my life was really GOING i
had put.
Speaker 11 (01:08:50):
Myself in position WHERE i could start losing. THINGS i could.
Speaker 13 (01:08:53):
Start losing things my, family my, marriage my, job like
those sort of things of IF i keep on this,
PATH I i don't know where that's going to end.
Speaker 11 (01:09:01):
Up and there are very few things in this.
Speaker 13 (01:09:06):
World where when you're very thick or you're having a
hard time and you say, like, okay do this for two,
weeks do this for a, month and you'll feel markedly
better in the same way that drugs and alcohol. Are
the turnaround you can experience when you're able to do
that is really truly, remarkable and for, me all the
(01:09:29):
things THAT i was afraid THAT i would miss.
Speaker 11 (01:09:32):
Are more than made up. FOR i don't really miss,
them and they're more than made up for the experiences
that we.
Speaker 13 (01:09:38):
Have right, Now i'm In seattle for a sports weekend
And i'm with two of my college. Buddies we're going Into,
rookies which is down In Columbia, city and they might have.
BEERS i will not be, drinking but the fact of
being around them and being around, alcohol for, me that's
not a, Trigger AND i just feel so much better about.
Speaker 1 (01:09:57):
Myself, danny when did it stop being a? Trigger, like
when did it stop being a situation where you could
do what you're going to do, Today like you're you're
going to go in your buddy's going to have a
few pops and and probably be fine and responsible about,
it and you're. Not you're not tempted to go with
them or to do it with.
Speaker 14 (01:10:14):
Them, Yeah so for, me the main triggers at first
were moments when either my wife was out of town
OR i was, traveling OR i was.
Speaker 11 (01:10:25):
Going to be on my own for the.
Speaker 13 (01:10:27):
Evening BUT i didn't have any specific THINGS i needed to,
do and so for the first YEAR i was really
conscious about creating structure around.
Speaker 11 (01:10:37):
That if my wife did go out of, TOWN i
would be going to a.
Speaker 13 (01:10:40):
Meeting smart recovery is a cognitive behavioral therapy based system
or an alcoholics anonymous. Meeting make sure THAT i go
to a. Meeting i'd set up an appointment at a.
Gym and the question of WHEN i started to feel
not triggered WAS i WOULD i gradually put myself in
live situations WHERE i had limited. EXPOSURE i would meet somebody,
(01:11:03):
somewhere AND i always do kind of have that out
of if it starts to get a little uncomfortable for,
me OR i feel like everybody around me is.
Speaker 11 (01:11:13):
Enjoying the thing is more THAN i.
Speaker 13 (01:11:16):
Am i'm usually willing to leave, now BUT i would,
say like to answer your question two or three years
to the point WHERE i feel good about, It like
right now at our apartment In New, york there's there's
my wife's got five bottles of.
Speaker 11 (01:11:30):
Wine she doesn't drink very, much but there is.
Speaker 13 (01:11:32):
Alcohol in her, house and it's Not that's never been
the trigger for. Me the trigger for me was always
kind Of i'm on my, Own i'm free to do
WHATEVER i?
Speaker 11 (01:11:40):
Want why not have three? Drinks and then that quickly becomes.
Speaker 1 (01:11:44):
Eight, well congratulations nine years and we'll mark ten years
in one year's. TIME i can't wait for. That so
congratulations danie'nil joining, us DANGING. Aposti let's get To Randy,
johnson getting any that's why you're here this? Weekend what
Does Randy johnson?
Speaker 11 (01:11:59):
Mean we're here for the spring. GAME i don't know about.
Speaker 1 (01:12:03):
You oh your dark, baby oh dogs after? Dark, yeah oh.
Yeah and it won't even be dark because it's a
six thirty not.
Speaker 11 (01:12:12):
Quite my, god it's gonna be a beautiful night down.
Speaker 13 (01:12:14):
There Randy johnson is there are a few things that
are as for me evocative of nineteen Ninety seattle As Randy.
Johnson and maybe it's the long drapesing, mullet the glorious
mullet that he, had or kind of the connection To Queens, Reik,
like there's a very specific strain of Ninety seattle and
(01:12:37):
that kind of feeling That Randy johnson embodies to. Be
and he's just such a unique, picture just how he's,
built the slingshot motion that he, had what Mister snappy looked,
like the fact that.
Speaker 11 (01:12:48):
He was kind of a. Grump like the fact that
he was kind.
Speaker 13 (01:12:50):
Of kind of a not, unapologetic but he was a
little bit of a.
Speaker 11 (01:12:55):
Grump he he was just such a fun picture to.
Speaker 1 (01:12:58):
WATCH i think that we Had Rick rizon an hour
ago and he talked about the transformation Of Randy. Johnson
it was it came from a meeting With Nolan ryan
AND i just for, people just for, reference Here Randy
johnson's first full season in the big leagues nineteen eighty,
nine he had ninety six, walks ninety one and ninety.
(01:13:19):
Two he had one twenty one fifty two and one
fifty four that Led Major League. Baseball he had the
most walks In Major League baseball those three, years and
then something. Happened the transformation from this, wild, crazy long
haired six' ten mullet dude to what he ended up
is just one of the most remarkable stories. IN sports,
i mean he had the, natural talent but he. Found
(01:13:39):
it he dug down and he.
Speaker 15 (01:13:40):
Found it he, certainly did and and he did just
there was there was an edge to his pitching that
we don't see it that much anymore from, strong pitchers.
Speaker 1 (01:13:51):
BUT it i.
Speaker 11 (01:13:53):
Loved it if you ever Talked To.
Speaker 13 (01:13:54):
Dave valley there's A year I'm not i'm not sure
off the top of, my HEAD but i believe it's
ninety two ninety Three Where dave valley got hit seventeen times,
by pitches was tied for the most in. The league
and the reason that happened Was Because dave Valley Was randy,
johnson's Catcher And randy johnson tended to plump people.
Speaker 11 (01:14:11):
With it if he was going to, walk someone, he
might he.
Speaker 13 (01:14:14):
Would occasionally speed the process along by having him, wear
One and valley in return would end. Up getting and
That what randy became and how he because that changed
later in his, career too like a more purposeful pitcher
and someone who was had incredible stuff but harnessed it
and just became one of the. Tremendous aces and his
teammates loved HIM like i will remember that when he
(01:14:36):
Won The world series With, the diamondbacks, And look i'm
not going to revisit the decision That the mariners made,
back then but when his teammates, loved him it was
between He encouraged shilling like the two of them were the.
Dominant pictures like his teammates were the Ones like randy's
teammates have always loved him.
Speaker 1 (01:14:53):
Because of what you just, Said, TOO like, i mean
he just the way, he Competed like rick talked about
it when coming into the bullpen of, ninety five just
the way he wanted, the ball and, AND uh i
mean you LOOK at i mean some of the numbers
are just insane and trim and he's a three hundred
and three game winner that may never happen and basically
never we may see that because he was just such
an absolute thoroughbred out there and just competed at such
(01:15:14):
a high level that. Was amazing and the ONLY thing
i feel bad about is You Mentioned Dave Valley scott
bradley was the catcher for his. No hitter it wasn't
even poor val wasn't even the catcher. That night he
didn't going to. Enjoy, that vally where is all those pitches?
Speaker 11 (01:15:30):
For him he?
Speaker 1 (01:15:30):
Doesn't like how bad? Is that, it's, like no that can't,
be that. YOU know i just that that Pitch To
mike keith for the final strikeout in the ninth thing
At the kingdom On that saturday is one of the most.
Iconic PHOTOS and i don't know who the, YOU know,
i Mean We've seattle times had. Great photos i'm SURE
the pi. Everybody else one of the most iconic signature just,
(01:15:51):
you know Illustrations of. Seattle sports, you know raises his
arms to the Sky as Dave nee house belts out
and all, that stuff and he just it's it'll be
cool to see. Him recognize rick did talk about sometimes
the attitude, was there but then he said the next
couple of days to. Be fine but he was the
epitome of don't talk to me on the day, we
pitch because. That's it that's where his compete level was
and that's what probably what made.
Speaker 13 (01:16:11):
Him, great yeah that and we TEND to i don't
know if we always recognize enough that some guys that's
that's the edge that, they need and the willingness to
do that is. Really Valuing like i'd rather be feared.
Speaker 11 (01:16:24):
Than loved.
Speaker 13 (01:16:25):
It's not what's important to me is the, result here
and for me to get into PLACE where i, Pitch
best i've got to have an edge. To ME and
i mean that feeling in, ninety five what it was
like in the one, game playoff what it was like
later when he came in to close out in, the
playoffs like those moments of having that bona fide number
(01:16:47):
one ace that was that season saved Baseball, in seattle
and he was the guy we knew we could count
on it when it mattered most.
Speaker 1 (01:16:57):
For peoples just for context, with Transformation when seattle made
the trade in nineteen eighty nine With The montreal expos
because wait, for it they weren't going to be able
to afford To Keep, mark langston a pending, free agent
an all star, left hander so they sent him to
a team that this also went out of business years
later when they sent when they did that move in nineteen,
(01:17:18):
eighty nine It Was brian holman who was kind of the, focal,
point right he was. The guy he was the. Best
Player eugene harris was a kind Of a matt brash set,
up guy but he could close for you, as well
had some swing, and miss and he was a bulldog
in his. Own right and then a guy that was six'
ten when he, got traded here he was zero to
four with a six point six, y' seven er twenty
(01:17:43):
six walks in. Twenty nine innings that's, what they got, and.
You're Like, huh for langston what and then look what
he ends up being pretty remarkable trade when it was all.
Said AND done and, i mean again the irony is
that they that they couldn't, if they couldn't They, couldn't
keep mark and they End Up getting ready johnson when
it's all. Said and done so it is our good
(01:18:05):
friend daniel'. Neil joining, us all Right we're The Virginia
mas neflex center wrapping. Up the draft you wrote About
running back john shond likes himself, from running? Backs isn't?
Speaker 13 (01:18:11):
He HE does and i kind of like the fact
of how much. HE LIKES them i i the idea
that he kind of has a signature thing that he
goes to that kind of drives the statisticians nuts or
the more.
Speaker 11 (01:18:24):
ANALYTICALLY minded folks i do love how he.
Speaker 13 (01:18:28):
Focuses On that and seattle's draft is it when you're
drafting In the position seattle, is currently in it's there's
not the same.
Speaker 11 (01:18:37):
Pressure, on that draft but there are.
Speaker 13 (01:18:39):
Some incredible OPPORTUNITIES and if i, Was gonna say john
loves drafting, running backs high but the ONE position that
i think he most consistently hits at are those corners
and and and, to, some respect safeties but the defensive
backs that he finds in the middle rounds of the
draft are can be franchise.
Speaker 11 (01:18:57):
Changing type players we've.
Speaker 13 (01:18:58):
Certainly seen that i'm excited about this group and to
see where it fits into the framework that they've always
put together because they don't have a, lot OF holes
but i think that they've got a lot of players
that could push to get.
Speaker 11 (01:19:09):
Into The, rotation.
Speaker 1 (01:19:11):
Uh ray give me a good little thing On the
dang apostrophe and how, people Can subscribe because i'm sitting
Down with the seahawk player here in just a Couple
Seconds in ricky, White the third so tell me how
tell people how they can get how they can Get.

washington either. So that's good nobody cares about you. Guys
out there go enjoy, your spring game, fella all. Right
have fun great to. Hear, Your voice, man thank you thank.
(01:19:59):
THANKS so Much i that's daddy O'Neil joining us an,
A as mentioned i should probably. TURN this UP i
got i gotta do some. Some engineering here can? You?
Hear me okay how are? You really Good This. Is
ricky white the Third Is year We daniel and neil
just finished up, And, he said hey one Of. The
newest seahawks but actually you've been. Here a year this
is this is year, two for you a seventh round,
pick last year you're out there with. All the youngins
(01:20:20):
let me just, first of all go as a guy
that you were active for a couple of, games last
year but you were here all season and for the
most part of the practice squad to, get CALLED up
as i mentioned a, couple of times but you've been.
Through this before what's it like? Being out there is
this is crazy to say, an, elder statesman.
Speaker 7 (01:20:32):
Right, it's amazing man you get back. On that field
you know it's not with the vits and everything with,
the new guys, but you know still teaching those guys
the WAY you know, i was taught you KNOW from
when i came in, how to practice, testing the detail
the Habits and then seahawk football, really.
Speaker 1 (01:20:50):
For you what was it? Like last year you got
a couple of chances to get up and get activated
on game day and that's got to be a. TON of,
fun i know you know you didn't, get any catches
but you were out there, AND special, teams i think and.
Do some things for a guy that's a, seventh round
pick you're working your way up and, you're playing. Games
meaningful games every game is Meaningful For the? Super bowl
champions what was your?
Speaker 7 (01:21:08):
Rookie year life, it, was amazing man just to, go out,
here you know, like, you said uh just contribute, to you,
know winning games being a part, of You know, the seahawk, football,
this team man it was. It was amazing it was a.
Dream come true, and you know just to, go out
there you know and practice and get, those you know
those the first, defense you know those the best looks that,
(01:21:30):
they can, see you, Know, every WEEK man and, i try,
to you know do, that every day, go out, there you,
know just showcase YOU know what, i can do, and
you know just imitate their best receiver, on opposing team
and you know things that he, likes to do his.
Traits AND everything, like i said they get those.
Speaker 8 (01:21:46):
Guys.
Speaker 1 (01:21:46):
The best look i'm gonna come back to. That a
second THAT'S an INTERESTING i guess i might ask. You
About that John schneider and mike McDonald go out of
their way to say it's not a fifty. Three man
roster it's a. Seventy man roster they and that's at
least what they say publicly to all of us, in
the media say it's it's seventy it's a. Seventy man
roster do they inside that locker room, inside the building
(01:22:08):
whether you're fifty three man or active or even active
on game day or part of, the practice squad did
they make, you, feel, that hey yes it is a.
Seventy man, roster.
Speaker 7 (01:22:17):
Of course not even, just you, know the coaches, also the,
Players YOU know and i feel like if, you're not,
active you know, on come game then you definitely got
to be out. Bringing the juice you got to get a,
guy's the energy just, pump them up make sure you
know you're seeing seeing things on the field that they,
may not see and, just you know giving. Them feedback
also so it's really it's definitely a.
Speaker 1 (01:22:36):
Seven man roster the when you said you and that's
probably fun thing is you get TO go against, I
Don't know devin witherspoon, probably every day. Every day night. It's.
Actually fun man what what receiver did you most enjoy kind,
of you know playing the part.
Speaker 7 (01:22:51):
Of last year it's a Couple of receiver I'll Definitely,
Say Justin Jefferson demontanam's Pooka, Nicole Uh. Mouka josh downs you,
know those guys uh you know the guys that you
know that we've seen last year that they, considered you know.
They receive one so it was fun to, go out,
there YOU know, like i said get those. Guys, the,
(01:23:12):
best look man what.
Speaker 1 (01:23:14):
Goes, Into, that ricky like do you have to sit
there like are you watching more tape of another team
almost like a defensive player to kind of learn what these? Guys? Straights? Are,
LOOK key, YEAH i.
Speaker 7 (01:23:22):
Am i am i'm paying, attention to, detail you know small,
traits you know and really how concepts, and you know
we're just receiving my lineup on. This certain route just,
so you know when they get, in the game they
know when the receiver line, up inside edge he's. Going
inside route when he's outside, of the numbers he might
do a double move, or you no little small, Things
(01:23:42):
LIKE that and i feel like that gave us the
advantage to to go out there and win and have
the best. Performance On defense.
Speaker 1 (01:23:48):
Ricky white the third with me Here At The Virginia
bateson athletic sceneri and fronounced with. YOU this afternoon. I
mentioned it so you're going against The Dude, and devin
witherspoon who is one of the best. In the business
i'm assuming you wind up against him. All the time what?
Speaker 8 (01:24:02):
Was that like.
Speaker 7 (01:24:03):
It was fun spoon is a guy. That, brings energy
man it's not even just more really. OUR whole defense
i get those guys. Props. Every day man they do the.
Same for me but you know those guys, are, They're
amazing man and like they're really they're just, like you
know they don't care whether you're. Undrafted seventh round they're
(01:24:26):
gonna make sure you know you on top. Of your,
things you know giving the, best LOOK because, like i said,
come game there they gotta see those those same traits,
and you know as a receiver or as you know
any player that they will Be. Facing come sunday so it.
Was really fun but just to Get Back, on spool
man he's a he's. A dog man he brings them,
(01:24:48):
he DOES not which i like because you gotta be yourself,
in this game. IN this level i feel like you
gotta have, that dog, mentality THAT heart and i feel
like he showed that every day.
Speaker 6 (01:24:59):
Here with.
Speaker 1 (01:24:59):
ME last year i remember talking to us and because
it was during probably OTAs or mini Camp, for the
vets and we're sitting in here and we're able to
see a little bit more this time of the year from,
a media standpoint we're up close and we can hear.
A lot more there's. No fans here it's it's, a
Little quieter, And, I'm like man spoon's a funny guy
because you put him on the podium and if he's
doing this or if you're, just sitting here he's gonna
be very quiet, and you know very succinct answers. And
(01:25:21):
all this you put a helmet on him and put
them between the lines and he's going and ilated that's
just what football brings out. Of the, people you know
it's you have to be that that type of person
you know, on the field you. Have to compete you
have to have that mindset, that you know you can't. Lose,
a rep man if you get beat. On a Rep you.
Know nax's.
Speaker 7 (01:25:39):
Rep that's cool let's get.
Speaker 1 (01:25:40):
Back To work so i'm. Gonna come back i'm gonna
come back to you. In A second so i'm curious
about your. Story moving Ahead but, uh reek's gone But They.
Keep JOSH joe, what i mean they made a decision
in a, lot of ways and, sometimes it's financial but
they they obviously like job jail out There And it's,
joe jail, sometimes you know most definitely what's what's give
me a Scout Report on josh joe.
Speaker 7 (01:25:59):
Man times he's. A physical corner he, likes to press get.
HANDS on heavy i don't want to give out, all
his traits you. Know the teams but Another, guy like,
spoon good energy, he's gonna, talk you know he's. Gonna
make sure he's gonna make sure you. Hear his voice
a couple of times in the red, so you know,
with him music got to go out. There and compete
so how.
Speaker 1 (01:26:19):
Much better are you today than one year ago when you?
Speaker 7 (01:26:22):
Stepped down there, a lot better so, much mentally physically
just more confident in my game and that and that
comes with like playing against those guys every day, like,
You Said Uh josh reed spoon and just going out
there and compete with it with them every day, just
you know also built. Up my, confidence so yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:26:43):
You've got a Guy, and julian neal he. CAME into
it i don't know if you got to Go against
julian neil, or then rookies did you go against? Those?
Guys today yes tell Me about julian neal.
Speaker 7 (01:26:51):
Long corner man he's really REALLY physical as i can.
See right now you know we only had jerseys And,
him and song so he can't. Be too physical, but you,
know a, long long, guy good energy, plays fast, too
smart players so bright.
Speaker 1 (01:27:06):
Future for him so when he when he it was
one week, to go today when, he got drafted he comes.
On the speakerphone you did the speakerphone thing last year
with all. Of us too you know, what it's, Like,
they calling oh You're with. The seattle media and then
you're probably on, a phone, like oh MAN who am?
I talking? To is weird that Dude Came in julie
neil and he put on A ship like i've Never,
WE had, Richard i mean i've been here, A Long,
time richard sherman other. Guys like that this, dude said
(01:27:27):
like we're gonna go back To back the i'm the
best covered draft. And all that did he talk?
Speaker 7 (01:27:32):
IT all today i did see, him talking, then but,
this you know this probably, probably overwhelms, him right. Yeah
kind of, but you know it's it's good to, bring
that energy you know to this facility because, that's you
know what all the players, got right now especially Coming Off,
a super bowl so you know we, everybody's you know high.
Speaker 1 (01:27:51):
Hopes right now tomorrow is the last day of this
so you got one, More day meetings i'm sure later and.
Stuff like that what's your role with these young guys
because everyone's competing for a but you had someone probably helped,
you last year that Would have been but what's?
Speaker 7 (01:28:03):
Your role really, just mentoring them showing THEM the, way
i know how we, practiced good habits you know, in
meetings rooms, taking good notes how, to you know prepare
and you know once we going to, on field work
translating that on field. To practice field so Tell.
Speaker 1 (01:28:20):
Me, about brian floyd the. New, offensive coordinator.
Speaker 9 (01:28:22):
Man.
Speaker 7 (01:28:22):
GREAT guy man i got the chance to meet him,
earlier this year a couple of weeks after he got
introduced as. Our officer, coordinator but, man great, guy players,
coach very smart same kind of similar office, to You,
Know to clint so it's it's great.
Speaker 1 (01:28:41):
To have him do you think the offense?
Speaker 5 (01:28:43):
Will?
Speaker 1 (01:28:43):
Look, similar, definitely, Yeah, yes sir, yeah play calling all
that very similar stuff. That he did sure your ROLE
when you i remember when. YOU got drafted a lot, of,
us like hey. Special teams guy he can he can,
be a gunner he can be. A return guy they
like you. AS a receiver i think something both both. In,
the slot also you can play the you can. Play
it all what's? What's your role tell me what you want,
(01:29:06):
to be man just besides fifty. Three man, PRODUCTION you
know i want to have. A great year i had
a chance to, just really, watch you know some of
the receiver ones you know, that we face And Of, Course,
Jackie Smith. Jigba cooper cup those guys are very very
good at.
Speaker 7 (01:29:23):
What, They Do man they're. They're very prepared how they prepare,
for each week how they, prepare for practice, the PRACTICE
habits and i got to really, watch and, learn you
know how those guys take on each and every day and. Intact, the,
DAY so man i really, thank those, guys you know
for bringing me in and just showing.
Speaker 1 (01:29:43):
Me, THE Way Honestly i, Ricky, white third Uh What
is cooper cup like as a? As a teammate is?
He a mentor is? He a teacher is? He a
coach is he?
Speaker 7 (01:29:52):
All the Above All the cooper cup is one of
the smartest football players you can. Ever, Think of man
he's he know what everyone is doing on the field.
At all times he meets with the, quarterbacks you know every,
day AND he, like i said he. Just knows everything
so he's definitely a good person having. A receiver Room
(01:30:13):
me and coop have a great relationship and, that's you
know for me coming in as a, rookie last year
THAT'S somebody that i wanted to be basically just be
on the hip and just.
Speaker 1 (01:30:22):
Learn, from, him well listen it's great to get to
Know you and seahawk fans getting. To do it no,
matter what happens and we're hoping for the. Best for
it preseason is going. To be huge want to see, you,
out there, healthy returning kicks. Doing your thing competitions with
this team.
Speaker 6 (01:30:35):
Is.
Speaker 1 (01:30:35):
ALL about uh i call up the official bile on
the media Site for the seahawks And It says ricky

Speaker 12 (01:32:04):
Yeah I'm not gonna i'm not gonna act like my
CAREER as a d one college soccer player has anything

did REMIND me of I. Played for seattle you we
were a top twenty five team at that point In the,
in DIVISION one and i was a very. FRINGE roster
player i didn't. PLAY very much i, was kind, of
you know always, on the bench that. Kind of thing
(01:32:24):
and we would host open tryouts for a lot of
kids to come out that have been like always really,
good players obviously and my coach would, always tell me
because you let kind of the fringe players play in
these open tryouts, against these, kids, be like hey you
better be like the best, kid, out here right and
so it kind of it kind of reminded me of
that similar SITUATION were you i LIKE to Think i
(01:32:45):
was i'm not gonna toot, my own horn, but you
know there WAS a reason i was on the team,
and they, weren't you know and there WAS a reason,
i wasn't starting and the People that were alex rolled
on and a lot of others were was.
Speaker 3 (01:32:56):
At, THAT point yeah i think it. Was, pretty GOOD
yeah well.
Speaker 1 (01:32:59):
I think it i think it's a good comparison, because
you know, when you're Listen, especially in SEATTLE and it's
i think you can even make that comparison here when
you get high school kids, that, are playing like we
have really good soccer. In, this area yes like we
have really really. HIGH end soccer i follow A thing
on facebook and IT'S the old nasl stuff, and you know.
(01:33:20):
And it's amazing i'll see guys cross there all the
time that came out, of our, area YOU know that
i PLAYED against and i wasn't even fringe guy. FOR
tryout guy i, was just like but like We had
such we've always from really from the early seventies, until
present day we've had. Great soccer here so if you know,
a high level a good high school soccer player in
(01:33:40):
this area is going to look he can play for
a lot of teams. Across. The country Yeah so when
i'm sure that the guys you were trying out against,
we were good and you have a guy's, coming in
here every one. Of these dudes i'm looking at some
of these guys today that like even just some of,
the offensive alignment you know that that are. Just like invites,
and you know you Guys, are, From, Oklahoma, Right Hawaii
(01:34:04):
houston eastern michigan which is, A Max, School. Iowa state
kansas these are just these are these are guys that
are just, Try, Out, Guys Kansas, iowa Oregon state, Another Kansas.
Player michigan state never heard, of this Guy He's. From
michigan state these these are. All good players So You
watch ricky white the third and kind of stand out
(01:34:24):
a little bit, like you're right he should like he.
SHOULD stand out i thought it. WAS interesting too i
don't even know how much there's like, like you, could
barring injury you can kind of Put in with sharpie
the five receivers Right, Now for seattle like you can
you can put that in. With a sharpie so there's
not a lot, of room there a lot of. Legal
room there, but you know, like he SAID that's why
(01:34:46):
i was, Kind, of curious like you you're here, For
a year You're Going, Against Devin, Witherspoon, Josh Joe, Bariq
Wollen tyokatta kobe bryant, Every single day like. You're, getting
better yeah because if you're if you're a practice squad
guy and you're in his situation, one hundred percent you're on. The,
scout team yeah and if, you're doing that, you're getting
(01:35:07):
better like you are. Going to be, SO he like
i thought. It, Was good yeah i'm way better than
it was last year all.
Speaker 12 (01:35:12):
The way around as someone who's been in, that role
before it takes a lot mentally to know that you're
not going to necessarily personally contribute directly to wins and
losses for being. On the field but, like you said
that plays a role for. All those guys it makes
them better as well if you compete against.
Speaker 3 (01:35:28):
Guys.
Speaker 1 (01:35:29):
Like, that YEAH well and i THINK and WHAT i
what i, ASKED him too i thought was Important about
because we hear this, all, the time right and, you always,
wonder you know how how. True it is but he
talks about he talked about the, seventy man roster because
You always hear schneider, And, McDonald referencing right it's a,
seventy man roster. Seven man roster it is one hundred
(01:35:50):
percent is a. Seven man roster but is it really
a seventy man roster or is it? Fifty three men
and then you have these other guys that are just
kind of there as, Practice squad guys and it does
sound like, it's, very INCLUSIVE absolutely which, i love, HEARING
you KNOW i just i love hearing that from from
a guy like that and hearing how.
Speaker 12 (01:36:06):
Good they are and we've heard always compete From guys,
like pete before but it's a different, VERSION of that
i feel like now, where, it's like, hey you. Know
it's cutthroat if you're gonna be, the best player we
don't care, who you, Are, tayakatta whatever right you can
step in and play for us and be.
Speaker 3 (01:36:21):
An IMPORTANT piece so i do kind of.
Speaker 12 (01:36:23):
Like that aspect tylecott is, a great, example, Great example
right and that dude is that.
Speaker 1 (01:36:27):
Dude is that dude's end UP gonna be i MEAN may,
and i mean We'll See what. Bud clark does, but
right now, he's your starter right and and came, out
of nowhere, AND you, Know I mean josh jil was
cut by a couple teams, along the way right and.
NOW he's, here i mean so those guys working, your
way up it's big and they certainly do, embrace out
here no. Doubt, about it okay we'll, take your break.
(01:36:48):
We'll come back, Coming up next rob rang will break

Speaker 1 (01:40:41):
kJ r, fm all right Here we go friday. At
two o'clock. We're rolling Along Our friend rob, rang joins
us and we just can't have a Week on a
friday without. Him talking football and of course we've got
to have on this week because maybe you guys Were
around on saturday, listening to us but. NOT everybody. Was
i understand it was a nice Day outside AND rob
and i were grinding away from nine to Noon At
(01:41:02):
The Virginia, mason athletics center getting ready to wrap it
Up kind of day THREE Of the nfl draft before
we turned It Over to Chuck Powell and Chris Kidd
and jackson felts and. All those Guys, but but rob
we gotta we gotta kind of recap what. Happened draft
wise you are a guy leading into the Draft, starting
in september and we go all the Way Up until
draft day and, here we. Are it's over seahawks end.
Speaker 5 (01:41:23):
Up.
Speaker 1 (01:41:23):
With eight drafting, first of all let me just Ask
how impressed you've watched all Seventeen Of the. John schneider
drafts you've, been out there you AND hughmell and i
on are, seven to, nine you Know stints On. Thursdays
and fridays we've been intimately watching this scene and. Covering
every draft how surprised Were You that john schneider was
able to pull off, what he did end up going
from four to eight while retaining his. First two, Picks.
Speaker 8 (01:41:46):
You know, i'm Not surprised but. I'm very, IMPRESSED you
know i Thought That that john scheinder just did. What he,
does you know there's a he's got kind of a
nickname among some of the other scouts and you know
general managers Out There, as trader john and he just.
WORKED his, magic i mean he came in and it
(01:42:07):
looked like it was he And head Coach mike, McGall
of course we're looking a little bit disappointed in terms,
OF you know i think they really loved the fact
That they Got. Jadari on price they're running back at number,
thirty TWO overall but i think if they were hoping
that they might be able to pull some type of
a small trade down to be able to acquire, some
more selections when that evaporated right and, before THEIR eyes
(01:42:30):
then i thought that they pivoted beautifully to be able
to double the number of draft picks, that they had
still be able to feel all their biggest, positions of,
concern you know and yet still not give up too
many of their assets for. Twenty TWENTY seven so i
really thought that they did a remarkable job of basically
kind of winning a draft that they were not in a.
Speaker 9 (01:42:50):
Position, TO win yeah i.
Speaker 1 (01:42:52):
THOUGHT so too i thought it. Was really impressive, And You.
Know jadarian price Going, back to thursday we talked ABOUT
you and I and and hugh right that, night went well,
this is interesting like he's not like, they're not happy
and it's not. Because the player they just didn't, they
Weren't happy and john said they, couldn't trade out but
they did, get the player and we weren't the only ones.
That said that we talked to other media. MEMBERS that
day i think everyone kind of Felt that and john,
himself saying it but They Do. Get jadarian price so
(01:43:14):
let's just kind of revisit that he had his introductory News.
Conference on thursday just an. Impressive young man i'll tell.
You right, now you know you Sit next to mike
McDonald and you look like you're the. More BUFFED individual
and i know he's, a football player, but my god
like that guy HAS not. Missed arm day there's no.
DOUBT about that i think people all kinds of people
are commenting on that we get a chance to watch
him on. The field earlier. Impressive young man So Let's
(01:43:35):
Go Jadarian. Price notre dame now that it's all, Said
And done, Rob, RAANS thoughts.
Speaker 8 (01:43:41):
Yeah i just. LOVE the selection i Mean that's what
i've been kind of pounding the table for it for
the last couple of weeks, or months here just saying
that that he would be an Ideal fit. In seattle,
system you know he's he's very experienced in a, wide
zone offense and it's. Just his instincts he's got just a.
SMOOTHNESS to him i used the comparison the Moments after
the seahawks selected Him to The Hall Of, famer terrell
(01:44:02):
davis And That got, hugh millon's, attention you know just
because of course he played with him and has a
great respect for running back that's Now. Enshrined in canton
but that's the KIND of, player i see not one he.
Necessarily wows you in terms of the. Forty Yard dashtime
jadarian price is four point four to nine second forty
yard dash, time is solid but. It's not elites, but
(01:44:24):
my goodness he plays fast and he is one of the,
most explosive backs not only in this draft class but
really in recent memory as far as guys who really
Fit in, WITH seattle's system i think he's going to
be an ABSOLUTE star in I think he's rb. One
right now with all Due Respect to George Hallani, and
emmanuel wilson and obviously the injured But Very talented zach Sharbone, came, at.
(01:44:47):
TOOSH etcetera etcetera I Just think jaron price is a
different level than all. THOSE other backs i think that
he is a Real Candidate for offensive Rookie of the
year honors. This upcoming season considering how good or fit
he is, in their offense and how much talent is
around Him.
Speaker 3 (01:45:02):
On the, seahawks all right we'll just move on.
Speaker 1 (01:45:04):
Down The, list bud CLARK safety from tcu is, the
second pick. Sixty fourth overall.
Speaker 8 (01:45:09):
I'm going to sound like such a, homer, right NOW
buddy because i also really love The Selection. OF bud
clark i just think that his ball skills are one
of the things that make him such a perfect Fit,
for the Seahawks Similar, to jadarim PRICE and that i
think he's just betting put into a. Very advantageous, SITUATION
you know i don't know if, you know This but
(01:45:30):
the seahawks defense is. Pretty darn good.
Speaker 3 (01:45:34):
I'VE heard that i.
Speaker 1 (01:45:35):
Have, HEARD that yeah i. Have heard.
Speaker 8 (01:45:36):
THAT yeah, exactly i mean you put a guy that has,
fifteen career, interceptions and frankly he should have had a lot.
More than that, there are, times you know where he
goes up and skies for the football and almost like
a volleyball player looking to spike the ball rather than.
ACTUALLY catch it I Think that Carl Scott and adam
derdey are going to do a great job of kind
(01:45:58):
of Just Tinkering with bud clark's technique a little bit
to reel in some of. Those interception opportunities but in terms,
of his speed in terms, of his agility his, hand eye,
coordination his confidence he locates the ball really really well.
For his safety he's almost built like a corner and
that's one. OF the things i think that he has
(01:46:20):
the versatility to be able to play a deep safety
as well as drop Down and give seattle some different
looks and man demand opportunities as. A nickel cornerback Very
Similar to kobe bryant, in the past, but a longer
leaner kind, of A player and i think he has even.
Better ball, SKILLS so again I think that seattle actually
(01:46:40):
is kind of coming out Of The smell mike roses.
A little Bit They lost can't walker The Third and
kobe bryant, is free, agency OF course but i think
that they might actually have upgraded.
Speaker 1 (01:46:48):
In this draft we'll see if we keep. The ball
rolling Let's Talk, about julian neal the Third, pick for
seattle ninety ninth overall. Third Round guy and i'll be
honest with, you this ONE this one i like just
because the post draft presser or the media availability he.
Did with us he calls in on, the speaker phone
and the guy was just, filled with confidence all. Kinds
(01:47:09):
of confidence he asked me about, going one, on you
know play a man, and all this and he's to
a'll be up. In your face guy really came in.
With some swagger what do You Think. OF julian neil,
i also, love.
Speaker 8 (01:47:20):
You know the post. DRAFT press, conference i mean there
is very Few players that i've ever heard that had
his type of confidence AND just bravado u and you
love the physicality of. WHICH he, plays i mean It's Funny,
with bud clark the safety we, just talked about he's
built more. Like a corner, julian neal is at six foot,
two hundred pounds is built a little bit more like
(01:47:41):
a safety and certainly hits. Like a safety he uses
his long arms to kind of corral receivers at the
line of scrimmage and kind of control where. They're gonna
go he wants to play press man and and, really kind,
of you know dictate where the receivers. Are GONNA go
h i do have some concerns about how he'll be
(01:48:02):
able to handle to some, of the, smaller quicker receivers but,
let's Face it the seahawks the most the most important
receivers that they're going to have to track down are
going to Be The new san Francisco forty Nine Ers,
receiver mike evins obviously, a big Guy And then Pooka
Naku and devonte adams of Course For The. Los ANGELES
rams and I Think that julian neil's physicality and confidence
(01:48:24):
makes him very well suited to handle those.
Speaker 1 (01:48:26):
Types Of, responsibilities rob ryant brought To You by ferrelli's.
Frelispizza dot, com all right so We're sitting there saturday
Morning At The Virginia mason Athletics center where i'm, at
right now And we're in we're in the room upstairs
and it's just you and me and just. A few
media wasn't even a lot real. Crowded up there and
nine point fifteen or so, In The morning john schneider,
comes walking through, starts greeting us, kind, Of, joke right
(01:48:48):
hey you guys laughing. On the road. Yes we, Are
oh hey i'm going, to walk out, and walks away
and he's just kind. Of killing. Time, We're taking well
seale's got. One pick today it would be the, sixth
round pick and that. Would BE it and i think
or did they had they added the fifth, at that
point they might, have added one, but, we're like oh
they actually that point they only, had, the one right
they only had the, sixth round pick and they were
(01:49:08):
kind of waiting to. See what happens you mentioned time
and time again during the draft that they had all
this draft, equity next year. TWELVE draft picks i think
it was heading into twenty twenty seven and with the
compensatory and, all that stuff, eleven or twelve and they.
Weren't at all those guys aren't going to, make the
team so maybe they would use a pick, lo and
behold they do something that's kind. Of Unheard of rob
(01:49:29):
they trade a fourth round pick for a fifth round,
pick straight up and with that fifth round pick They.
Take both stevens so it's obviously a guy that they Like.
And all american we had him on the show older This.
Week from iowa we all know, this with. Him the,
guy you know, he's a mauler but he does have some,
issues testing wise wasn't the most, fleet of foot, small
(01:49:50):
shorter arms small hands. And all that so What about
both stevens in the fifth, round for effectively what's a. Fourth,
round pick.
Speaker 5 (01:49:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:49:58):
That's the thing, and it's, like you know when you're.
EVALUATING offensive, LINEMEN i mean i don't know how many
listeners and thank you all to who are, LISTENING right
now i don't know how much listens there about forty
yard dash times or even ten yards split times when
it comes. To offensive LINEMAN and so i think Frankly
that the seahawks don't care so much. ABOUT that either
(01:50:19):
i think that, it is important it's part, of the
process but it's Obviously something that seattle was willing to
Overlook because both stevens did not have a great workout.
At the combine, but my goodness. He plays fast it's
kind of similar to The Running. Backer darian price he's such.
An efficient mover he knows where he is going when
(01:50:42):
he blocks at. The second level, he knows where he
anticipates where linebackers are trying, to get to and he gets.
There very, effectively he's, got you know one of your,
favorite scouting expressions, those heavy hands and he gets them
onlinebackers and moves them. Around at will and so he
plays rather than running, fast in workouts and that's really what.
(01:51:03):
You're looking for he didn't allow a sack for the
last three years running in he has starting experience about
the left and. Right guard positions that's where he played
the last Two years for iowa for an offensive line
That Was The joe moore award winner as the best
offensive line in all. OF college football i just think
that he is a plug and play kind. Of a
candidate seattle feels like, they need, him you know they
(01:51:26):
Of Course have anthony bradford that. RIGHT guard position i
think if they are Very confident In bryce cable dow behind,
him as well But Also with anthony bradford entering the
final year of his rookie concept and maybe not the
most likely guy to come to, BE re signed i
think that this is just a very much a, move
for now but also an investment. In The, future all
(01:51:46):
right so We.
Speaker 1 (01:51:47):
Like both stevens we'll check that out AFTER you and
i signed OFF. On the aar guys THAT you and
i haven't REALLY talked about i had a chance to,
Talk about yet Let's Go Through, emmanuel henderson junior the
wide receiver slash special teams Player out of kansas sixth.
Speaker 8 (01:51:59):
Round pick overall it's funny, because you know he played
finished up his College. Career at, kansas and again a
lot of our listeners may not really know Much About,
the KANSAS jayhawks but i can tell you this is
a four Star. Recruit at alabama he certainly entered the
college football situation as a. Very prized commodity he was
(01:52:21):
a running back originally and moved to the transition to.
Wide receiver here so he is still a little, bit
raw sproutrunner but he has a legitimate deep speed four
to three guy and also an incredible. Special teams Player
he led kansas in tackles. On punk Coverages he led
kansas and tackles. On kick coverages he also returned to
(01:52:44):
kick for a. Touchdown AS well so i just think
of this as a player that reminds me a Lot
of what seattle Looked For. In drek young he's not,
quite as tall but he's just as fast and has
just as much upside, in my opinion as far as
being a vertical threat on offense and special teams. Demon as, well.
Speaker 1 (01:53:01):
All Right uh andre fuller Cornerback out of toledo's seventh three.
Seventh round picks he was the first of three in the,
seventh round two. Thirty, Sixth overall yeah andre full.
Speaker 8 (01:53:11):
WAS interesting, PLAYER i FRANKLY i was i was thinking
he was going to go, in the morning like the
fifth to a minimum.
Speaker 12 (01:53:16):
The.
Speaker 8 (01:53:17):
Sixth round uh he really stood out Not, only at
toledo but earlier In His Career arkansas pine bluff had
a splashing Performance At The East west shrine. Bowl as
well he plays at the physical speed that that seatle requires.
THE quarter position, i think, that you know a lot
of times seventh rounders kind of guys that you know
a little. Bit more cool we talked about just a
Moment Ago, with emmanuel henderson the he's a little.
Speaker 9 (01:53:38):
Bit more of a.
Speaker 8 (01:53:39):
Ambal On, traits andre fuller to me is just A
quality player i could, see, making roster, uh you know
just making it a roster and at minimum certainly being
a quality practice squad kind. Of a, guy and frankly
that's one of THE reasons why I Think the sea
how wanted to fire these three. Seventh round selections we
Know that the seahawks have had such great success in,
(01:54:00):
rafted free agency they weren't going to have that type
of Success As the. Super bowl champions agents out there
know that play there's gonna can be very many, Roster spots, available,
SO like yeah i think this is one of the
Geniuses here of schneider is that he recognized that and
so wanted to acquire some selections so that way they
could assure that they got some of the, players they
wanted rather than if they fell through the draft and
(01:54:22):
hope they were able to sign them as. Undrafted, FREE agents.
Speaker 1 (01:54:25):
Yeah i think that's we, spoke about That you AND
hugh and i and others on, Our draft coverage Corbin
and Obviously greg Bell Uh and chuck i'm sure touching.
On as well like normally at the end of the
Draft on A saturday, on day three we're kind of
hanging around and they're gonna, put you know we're gonna
find out all the names of ten eleven guys and
it's a grind. For them there but that's like a
(01:54:45):
really important part of the Process. WITH with, schneider i
MEAN they've had i think it's close to forty guys
have made an impact with this team as undrafted free
agents since they started the process. Seventeen years ago but,
like you said guys aren't gonna want to come in
where the, roster is basically you can. Look at it
there's not a lot of open competition, for roster spots
assuming incumbents play up to the same level they. Did
last year so you got to go, find these guys
(01:55:06):
and you got to draft from the seventh round one. Of,
those guys boy you always like. A Big body devin
eastern is a nose Tackle. Out of minnesota he is
as big. AS a house i guess the first thing
is LIKE, in today's nfl you would think teams would
want a guy like that size to plug and play.
In the middle but what kept him and what put
him down to. A seventh rounder i think just a
lack of true.
Speaker 8 (01:55:27):
PASS rush skills i think that he had Wound up
leaving minnesota with believe five total sacks over his. Entire
college career but he can, stuff the run he can
play up and down the, line of scrimmage and he's
been a. True iron man he started every game in
the last. Three years running also Compete At, the, senior
bowl which of course We know the seahawks have quite
(01:55:48):
the track record of Prospects going to mobile and. Playing well.
THERE it's funny i think that he can play that.
Nose guard position and that has been A position where
seals has wrote he had. SEVERAL different players i also
think he, Can play outside, so to me the comparison
isn't So Much a brandon peeley is AS much as
i think it could be more Of Like. A mike morris,
(01:56:10):
a guy again it can kind of play up and
Down the entire lion. Scrimmage For you so I'm Intrigued.
BY devin easter i don't know, that HE'S flashy but
i think that he is the kind of guy that
you can build around a little bit and have him
be part of the. Defensive Line rotation.
Speaker 1 (01:56:25):
Rob, Ryan, With This okay michael Dansby cornerback at arizona
looks like kind, of a burner but very late pick in.
Speaker 8 (01:56:30):
The.
Speaker 3 (01:56:30):
Seventh, round yeah again this is the.
Speaker 8 (01:56:33):
Gamble on trades arizona a lot of four defensive back,
selected This year and dansby is the one that was
kind of. UNDER the radar i mean he Was not
in Bye into the combine claims that he ran in,
the four twos but he did not work Out at
the pro he. Had suffered, abdominally so again Kudos to
the seahawks for really digging deep, on a player, BUT
(01:56:55):
you know i started watching some of his table let's,
he was selected and he had. Some splashy moments in
his final Game With the arizona wildcats was. A bold
game he had a couple, of pass breakups he had
an interception, in that game and just really showed off some.
Dynamic athletic ability also turns and locates the ball well
as a. VERY confident corner i think his straight line
(01:57:18):
speed and his ability, as a, tackler to me. Is
really intriguing another player that when you, watch the tape
you understand why the Other the other arizona defensive backs
went earlier because they're in some cases bigger and also have.
Straight LINE speed but i think that he kind of
felt cracks for a. LOT of teams i think that
this is Another player THAT sea how i think was
(01:57:38):
anticipating that they might be in a game as an,
undrafted free agent but when they realized that that wasn't
likely to, be the case, just you know just make
that selection to make this type of athletic ability and
upside and hunger because he played with a with a
great deal of confidence and a great deal of, you.
KNOW again hunger i think that you want these the
(01:57:59):
kind of player that you want to have. On your
squad seattle walked into this drafting and with only five quarterbacks,
on the roster that's less than any other team in ALL.
Of the nfl they wound up selecting, three of them
as well as a safety you might be able to
play quarner In The. Aforementioned bud clark they just completely
retooled a secondary that was arguably one of the biggest
strengths Of Last year's. Super bowl run end.
Speaker 1 (01:58:20):
Of the day the thing that jumps out at us
is they didn't get. An edge rusher and Now Maybe
the dante fowler thing happens and that maybe that. Was
the plan maybe at some point we're going to find
out Very Soon that dante fowler Is, signed by seattle
and then that makes sense why they didn't draft. An
edge rusher but they didn't draft, an edge? Rusher did
they i'll, just say this did they miss a, couple
(01:58:40):
of opportunities especially, with you, know, those third fifth and.
Speaker 16 (01:58:44):
Sixth round picks, at that point maybe in, the third
round there were still some fairly quality edge rushers, That
WERE available but i wouldn't trade one of those pass
rushers for the defensive backs that they selected in the second.
Speaker 8 (01:59:00):
And THIRD round and i do think a lot of
it has To Do, with, dante fowler who Of course
the seahawks Have ad, in Jurday Specifically but DeMarcus lawrence
also have a great deal of familiarity with him from
their time SHARED together At uh in Dallas and at
Day also In Atlanta. WITH dante, fowler i mean you
look at his pass rush win rate at Least According
(01:59:22):
To pro football focus and looks particularly with a. Grain
of salt but they do a nice job of the.
Value wing players i'm putting, a number there and some
of the pass rushers that had More Sacks than dante
fowler a year ago ian were didn't have pass rush
win rates that. THAT he did i think that he
is just Kind of a it's almost like the crafty left.
HANDER in, baseball i mean he's a guy that just
(01:59:43):
knows how to. GET after quarterbacks i think they can
be part. Of the rotation, and to me what's encouraging is,
that to me this is a Sign that the seahawks
Feel Very confident DeMarcus lawrence, is coming back and also
a sign that they are very high on their second
year Players like A jared i Ivy or a connor
O'Toole Or, a jalen gains some of the players That
(02:00:04):
maybe longtime seahawks fans may not, know THAT well but
sele kept on their active roster last year to not
allow anybody else to steal them off. To practice SQUAD
so clearly sele is very high on some of their
in house candidates and didn't feel like they had To
make at brusher nearly as much of a, priority as
say goofball, is like me we're pounding the table for
(02:00:25):
to make that.
Speaker 1 (02:00:25):
A priority earlier rob rang brought To You, By ferrelli's Pizza,
Ferrellispizza Dot com Fox sports dot Com And our draft

opening day mister you dub myself mentioned dogs after dark
today and that's. GOOD for you i did mention dogs
after dark. In the headlines, Despite all that softy does
not want to talk to me for for for my.
For cross talks we'll do texts next segment four nine
(02:02:22):
one on the couple of, boys tech voy a couple.
More let's go we'll do that next segment wrap things up.
For the week but, you know what we put him.
On the payroll he's working for us now and so
that means he gets to do a two hour show
and some of us now do three thanks to you
and uh and then on, top of that but you're,
on the payroll so you're gonna work. A little harder
and That's Our buddy greg Bell From The tacoma news
tribune who is. With us here I'm At The virginia
(02:02:43):
mason athletics Cuar as is greg where day one of
rookie mini camp where the dreams begin. Just wrapped up
uh for for was it sixty five seventy? Guys out there.
Speaker 9 (02:02:53):
Almost, seventy guys yeah there's a lot of, people out
here and that's.
Speaker 1 (02:02:56):
That's it's hey, first of all Shout Out to eric
kennedy and, that equipment staff because you've got to put
all these dudes in jerseys and uniforms and find, lockers
for them and then once They're, gone on saturday you
got to renovate and do it all over again because
the other guys come back. In, next week man that's.
A thankless job those guys. Work so hard man in equipment', Same,
with baseball. Hockey doesn't matter easiest gig would. Probably be
(02:03:18):
basketball there's some shoes, where you go.
Speaker 9 (02:03:23):
And only sixteen twenty of these guys out of seventy
are going to be here right. On this weekend they
typically get two or three out of the invite lists that,
they impress them maybe one or two that. They sign
back and there are some positions, you, could, say oh
yeah they could use some help, there depth, wise. Defensive
line linebacker but, by and large this, is a yeah
(02:03:47):
this is a large undertaking for a lot of people
that aren't.
Speaker 1 (02:03:50):
Gonna Be Around is brendan peey the last trial guy
that kind.
Speaker 9 (02:03:52):
Of stuck around he's the one who had the most playing. Time,
right off yeah so.
Speaker 1 (02:03:57):
We can happen it can like you're, coming out here
you're trying to Make an impress if you're not only
und here's. A crazy thing you're, not only undrafted but
you're just you didn't even get signed as an. Undrafted
free agent, and you know we talked about this a lot,
during the draft you and me and everybody else upstairs
covering it that this is not a team that undrafted
free agents we're going to be looking to go to
because their roster is kind of. Set Right now RIGHT.
Speaker 9 (02:04:16):
That's why i see some of these guys in this
rookie mini Camp and g Scott Junior from ohio state
who's been out of the league or out of colleague
now for this will be. A second year there's a
Five To six. Air force officer he's Actually. GRADUATED in
december i talked to. Him after Practice His. Name's kate
harris he is going. To be commissioned. He, is commissioned
(02:04:36):
actually he is a second Lieutenant In. The air force
he IS, on permissive tdy a military, term temporary duty
so he's getting paid while in active duty to be at.
This mini camp his agent knew Somebody in. The seahawks
camp he's, five feet six he's. A wide receiver he's, not,
playing anywhere no but it's pretty Cool For an air
force second lieutenant to get out run AROUND. In the, Nfl,
(02:04:58):
he said yeah this is good if he would happen to,
get a contract and, he probably won't but, if he
would then he Would petition The department of defense to
get out of his active service and. Go into reserves
they have a program for that if you do get a.
Professional sports contract he told me he's also got an
invitation to Go To The New England patriots ricky. Minicamp next,
week so yeah it's that kind of weekend for maybe
(02:05:21):
fifty of.
Speaker 1 (02:05:21):
The seventy guys the one Guy That jumps ryan seaver
as a Linebacker from The University. OF saint thomas I believe,
That's d three so. He was here i'm just looking For.
Speaker 9 (02:05:32):
Some, in, MINNESOTA yeah yeah i.
Speaker 1 (02:05:34):
Think that's it there's a couple Here.
Speaker 9 (02:05:35):
From The University. Of Saint Thomas jason jason laborette is
a six to seven tackle who looks just.
Speaker 1 (02:05:41):
Like your son keefer. In the face he ain't. Six, to,
seven yeah yeah.
Speaker 7 (02:05:46):
In.
Speaker 9 (02:05:47):
The face yeah there are A Couple of washington. State
cougar's Here Who's? Here, Cyrus webster yeah i've never even.
Heard of him defense, is brocked Down do you who?
IS a center? I, know, him yeah six he can play.
A little bit i'm surprised he didn't get sign is
an undrafted. Free agenc somewhere to be, honest with you that's.
Speaker 1 (02:06:02):
The one guy that kind of there's and there's a,
lot of GUYS guys from sec Schools and and big
ten schools that are here undrafted and and out here trying,
to you know. Chase A, dream kai, horton back up
backup quarterback from you dub.
Speaker 9 (02:06:16):
Is out here. There's three quarterbacks let me.
Speaker 1 (02:06:18):
ASK with quarterbacks i was kind of in and out.
All the time the one guy that would jump out
to me would be gets, Laugh, The kids yeah red's
LAUGH from b yu And the HOE you and, I,
did this. Jake let's laughing This Is a. Jake rhetz
laugh who was it AT? B y u and much
like many of us would have did not last all,
the way there que and it had nothing to do
(02:06:41):
with drugs or. Alcohol or anything he just had a
girlfriend and, that's not allowed so that he. Didn't marry
anyway so he's got. A heralded guy what did you see?
FROM him anything I actually saw blake shape And who's?
From mississippi state is it seemed to?
Speaker 9 (02:06:53):
Be, the one yeah there's the ones and twos today
over a uh the one from two ends more much
more heralded quarterback. Whatever that Means jake rets laugh was
running someone with with. There, was ones yeah. Nothing out
terrible i've been Out Here For. Ricky minni cancel the
Quarterback Couldn't hit lake washington if they were standing five
(02:07:14):
yards away. From the lake It's not been it was not.
Speaker 6 (02:07:17):
LIKE that.
Speaker 9 (02:07:17):
Today i didn't it wasn't like. Two, years ago yeah
it wasn't Even, A bad yes, i mean yeah so.
It wasn't. That you know what's a couple of things
that did stand. Out, To Me one janarian price's, arms
are big Their, biceps.
Speaker 1 (02:07:33):
Are okay.
Speaker 9 (02:07:35):
It Looks, like robert turbin he? DOES it really i
mean he was it was striking how built he was in.
The upper body he said he really rededicated himself to
weight training and getting bulkier after he ruptured his hamstring
his Freshman Year. At notre dame, twenty twenty two the mayor,
Of his, Hometown dennison interview. He's thank you he said
(02:07:56):
that eighth grade he broke his janari and broke his
leg and was out into this first year. Of high
school sets twice in Five years that price has missed entire,
seasons of football and here he is still. Number one
pick we're gonna be looking At where bo stevens. Is,
lining up obviously he was the, right guard today, as
(02:08:18):
we expected and we asked him, about it afterwards, and,
he said well they have a pretty good. Left GUARD
here if i, Had to assume i'm going to start
on the beginning play on. The right side but Of Course.
That's anthony bradford spart is going to the last year.
Of His, Contract, What Seattle pacific northwest, Seahawk fans everywhere
You're Gonna love julian neil if.
Speaker 1 (02:08:39):
You don't already he.
Speaker 9 (02:08:41):
Is so outspoken we just got done talking. To him
again how was he compared to THE same thing I asked,
him i said was that Just exuberance with hugh on
our on the conference call after, he got drafted, and,
he said. No that's, me he said THAT'S exactly. Who
i am and he was talking about How He met
richard sherman during. The this today sherman was out on
(02:09:01):
The sideline and Sherman, was, asking, neil hey one what
are you seeing during the mid snap? During the play
what are? You Looking at and neil said? In mid play,
he was like, Oh My god richard sherman is talking to.
Me right now, AND he said i had to come
up some really good answers on a FLY and what
i was looking at. And he thought Neil Is, from
(02:09:24):
san francisco in The City, of san francisco went to
School In The san. Francisco public schools, and he said
his mother Is a diehard seahawks fan and it's so
excited that He became a seahawks and retold the whole
hat story and how he sent his aunt out to
get a hat and one hat, he was missing a couple,
he was missing, but he said just Go get. A,
seahawks hat yep because he had an inkling he might Go.
(02:09:45):
To the seahawks he, is very energetic he's very has a.
Lot Of Bravado he's richard sherman like and speaking as far.
As that goes but it was interesting to Hear Him,
and bud clark the, second round pick Talk about. Meeting
sherman today probably on inspiring in a. Lot of. Ways
it is and, what's interesting is of course they're trying
(02:10:05):
to get guys who are not in awe Of The current, super,
Bowl champions right but you Talk about A hall.
Speaker 1 (02:10:09):
Of, FAMER legend, Well, i think greg you walk out
on the field for the first TIME in an nfl,
facility and. LIKE you're So I, had ricky white the
third who was a seventh round pick last. Year in
here he jumped down after practice today AND AND and
i i, SAID to, him i said how different is
it compared to? A year ago, and, he goes oh
he goes. A year, ago you know, walking out here your,
(02:10:30):
eyes are like what is? What's going, ON he says,
i felt, comfortable confident obviously guys in our veteran he
had two games where he was acting. For last year
he's on the practice. Squad all year He Went against
devin witherspoon every day in. Practice last year, so for him, this,
is like okay. HERE we go i, DID ask, him
i said give me a Scouting Report on julian neal to,
go against me, and, HE goes. YEAH i did i
would you think he, goes. Really long, athletic he goes
(02:10:51):
he's good like he kind of was effusive. OF his,
praise i, said all right. HERE'S the deal I said
last friday when, we came out when, he got drafted he.
Was sherman like he was Just BOISTEROUS making, all i
said was he? Talking out there he does not he.
Speaker 11 (02:11:02):
Can say.
Speaker 1 (02:11:02):
Anything he goes. He's really, quiet he, Goes he goes
but all those guys are because they're just all kind
of trying to find their feet and try to figure out.
WHERE THEY'RE at i, I you, know i said we'll
Compare That. To devin, witherspoon, He says well devin, never
shuts up but, it's like. Go go go but, but You,
KNOW like neil i think once he, gets more comfortable
we'll probably see that personality come out. ON the field
i think today's just got to, be you know you
just look at these guys are, walking out there and
(02:11:24):
it's whether you're. A draft, pick Or not Like i'm
in i'm walking out onto the practice Field For the
Super bowl champions they.
Speaker 9 (02:11:30):
Walk past two lombardi trophies as they get into the
lobby back into, the locker room and, they Mentioned, that
but clark the, second round. Pick mentioned, that clark incidentally
the coaches and say he, is Like that. Like, neil
is yeah we just haven't. Seen it yet you can.
Speaker 1 (02:11:44):
Kind of tell when he did his his Speakerphone, interview
on friday he. Was uber confident he just wasn't as long. With, his,
ANSWERS yes right i think he was just kind of
a little bit shorter. With his answer he actual he
had his three year old son, with him today which is.
A great story he talked about being a. Dad that,
night you know that's a. Whole. Different world yeah he.
Speaker 9 (02:12:01):
Halfway through his SIX years at tcu and he and
his fiancee, had A baby and i to ask him
about trying to be a full time college student and
a full time big time football player and PREPARE for
the nfl drive And he's, she he said my fiance
is a princess. And a queen at the end OF
His What. I love today at the end, of His
interview but clarks his walk, off says peace love. And,
(02:12:23):
hair grease okay that's An. Old school.
Speaker 1 (02:12:27):
Yeah who else jumped out?
Speaker 16 (02:12:31):
OF?
Speaker 1 (02:12:31):
You, today A yeah.
Speaker 9 (02:12:35):
So saamalo is a un it's a he's assigned. Undrafted free,
agent he's so he's on the. Ninety man Roster He's
from kansas state six three. Three Point, thirty and sayamalo
they couldn't block him in. The pass game he couldn't
get his hands down on the, quick pass game and
he batted down at least. One couple passes the coaches
noticed those things because you can't sack a quarterback. In
(02:12:56):
these drills he can't even. Get near him but if
you're showing that you can't get cut and can't get
the offensive lineman and there, into your body and you
can still extend your arms and. Blockbound short passes, they
noticed that so he would be.
Speaker 1 (02:13:09):
NOTICED for Sure i Noticed devin the eastern, just size,
wise he's big six' five, fifteen, is maybe yeah yeah
they listen. HIM at. Three twenty i listen i'd say.
He's not as big but in just in terms of
walking around today and, WATCHING him Warm Up i. Had,
red bryant, flashbacks yeah like Really He's, bigger than mike morris,
(02:13:31):
who's a, big dude you know, but he's a big
big fella against. Sixty five three twenty he was. A
seventh round pick he just jumped out, with size to
me the, same thing you SAID the first Thing i want.
When i'm walking OUT the first Thing I noticed about
jadarian price kind of noticed that yesterday the, news conference
came in and you never know if guys, weren't a,
size medium ye hoodie like, big guys like me they always.
Look like sized, medium but, For, him you're like okay
(02:13:53):
You're sitting next to mike, McDonald and, you're like you
know you're dwarfing. Him upper body wise and McDonald. Doesn't Miss,
arm days so price you look at him, then watching,
him today you know like at two o three we talked.
About a draft night?
Speaker 6 (02:14:05):
Is?
Speaker 1 (02:14:05):
He thick enough right he said that was seven pounds.
Speaker 9 (02:14:08):
Less Than He, played at notre dame and then he
was nervous and, overtrained for the combine and that about
the time he, got to the combine he was with
whoa two O three and the seahawks scouts. Said the,
same thing they said this is lighter than he plays
we'd rather him played to ten.
Speaker 8 (02:14:21):
Or so they.
Speaker 1 (02:14:21):
Say two fifteen ish maybe it is what they said.
To ten to fifteen they want it to.
Speaker 9 (02:14:25):
Be Above two ten and price said he's intending to
play at, least at two.
Speaker 1 (02:14:28):
Ten if not more he's not as thick, down below
as say, like a ken walker but up above he's.
HE'S putting quick feet i WATCHED him do. GRILLS i
put on i saw him. CATCH a couple passes i thought. He,
couldn't catch passes yeah.
Speaker 9 (02:14:38):
They threw to him they made a point of throwing
to him, an eleven on eleven he did go wrong
way a couple of times and lined up the wrong.
Way and the quarterback the quarterback lined him. On the
wrong way here's. In the wrong way. They're doing very
rudimentary they're not doing much of because they're not going
to show fifty guys who aren't going to be here
after weekend. Much of the playbook so they just want,
to see if they especially the, undrafted and TRYOUT guys are,
(02:15:01):
They nfl caliber players can they actually? Belong on this
field and, for the draft picks it's just basically acclimating
to this is going to be your home for. The
next four years so maybe. It's not a guarantee And
we TALKED about chris and i did seven draft picks
On A team the super bowl champion with twenty of.
Twenty two returning starters it's no guarantee that those seven
picks are going, to make The Team especially because John
(02:15:22):
schneider and you i'm alluded to it last segment in his,
tenure of sixteen years thirty two non drafted or were
creaticy DFAs have made, the team and play and. Many
of them played they had a. Lead running back HERE
It Was a udfa thomas rawls for. A couple of
years so you can count on one or. Two of
those guys of the seven they, announced today is, signing
as possibly said.
Speaker 1 (02:15:43):
A couple of.
Speaker 9 (02:15:43):
Them are edge. Rushers There's a couple marvin jones has
all kinds Of physical skills from oklahoma. As a pass
rusher he's THE son a former Nfl Player For a
Florida state hall of famer. By the same name there
there's chance there's a spot on this. Roster For edge

guys that You've. Signed is as udfa's maybe there's a
guy along the way that ends up taking a spot
and they sign him as a free, agent before you
know the mini camp start and you let somebody else go.
From your ninety man but, those are long. Shots AS

(02:18:23):
draft pick guys the first four or five or so

That, RIGHT now ANDERSON yeah i mean i think. THERE
is some problem i would be surprised that they're Not Already.
Talking with coe young. You get Something Done judging that
cold emerson. Contract NOW is ludicrous So I wouldn't compare
cole young to What He's making to colt, emerson, now
because hopefully. Yeah both of them that's the whole point
signing them early on so you can have them for a.
Long period of, time but you, know.
Speaker 1 (02:21:55):

HEAVY hands i gave I had to give rob a
hard time last night. ABOUT that as well i was
just cool by The way that the. SHERMAN was here
today i didn't, notice THEM out there but i was
kind of in and out obviously. Doing a radio show
bridge one of the few ever listen to on the
radio and feel. Like, they're the game yeah he And.
So it was dave dave, was the. Same way you
know dave was exactly the same way. With that as
well can't WAIT TO Tune into Cbs Nfl sunday and
(02:24:12):
russell wilson tells ME how wide. An nfl field is
but the separation is in the preparation that this is
a championship week for the team and how they need.
To ignore, the noise oh.
Speaker 3 (02:24:20):
God it's the six. Inches Between, the years.
Speaker 1 (02:24:22):
Ian, okay first of. All great great, text, second OF all.

it james Brown and you, Know russ he goes they'll count?
Ice silly right now. Separation is, THE preparation oh boy
i would just probably spit up my coffee.
Speaker 12 (02:24:46):
Right then and there the whole country would get a
taste of what we had for? What, Ten plus years,
YEAH i'm telling, You, i say. THAT okay little sarcastic
i think he, could be really yeah. LIKE crazy crazy
good i do believe.
Speaker 3 (02:25:00):
That it does go one of.
Speaker 12 (02:25:01):
TWO ways for me i think he's either incredibly corny
and like tries way too hard to. Be like that
guy or if he's if, he's like you said if
he is willing to tell the truth and just okay
instead of just.
Speaker 3 (02:25:15):
Say like random CATPHRASES you.
Speaker 1 (02:25:17):
Know what i mean i'm gonna give him. A back.
Ended compliment oh okay russ never really cared about what other,
players thought of him. Including, HIS own teammates true i
won't go, as, far as say, well, sort of selfish
right it's.
Speaker 6 (02:25:32):
Like.
Speaker 3 (02:25:32):
Level, Of arrogance yeah yeah so if.
Speaker 1 (02:25:34):
He brings, that same, like whatever YOU, know attitude to
tv then he'll be willing to say what he. Really,
feels and, sees yeah you know like he'll. Be he'll,
be honest if not we. GET separation as preparation i
hope it's one. Way or the other either give me.
Every rust cliche ever either give me every single rest,
cliche you've ever had or or just, be rush saying yeah.
(02:25:57):
THAT'S a horrible throw i don't know. What he saw there,
you gotta do this this and this and not.
Speaker 12 (02:26:01):
REALLY give a rip i honestly love to, See, THAT
from him, like i don't know maybe it does. Take
getting to happen is THERE.
Speaker 1 (02:26:08):
Anybody in the nfl there's everyone's got, the. Pregame showing
now RIGHT so, you've got nfl network, Which, IS, not
great uh espn which was better when they Had hassle BACK. On, fox,
and cbs okay yeah, CRONKS just so simplistic. I could
do that i don't FEEL like there's any nfl guys
that that play ex Players That really maybe, ALEX smith
(02:26:29):
sometimes yeah I think now That I. Think maybe alex
smith like, whereas in other sports like WE'RE watching you
and i. Watching, the hockey players yeah these guys have
no problem calling DUDES. OUT With, the Nba, nba yeah
well charles. Yeah, that is awful, Yes okay Or. NO
cleveland is cleveland i think the other. Day was just
awful but.
Speaker 3 (02:26:49):
But we love that we, want we want, personality we
want opinions, right.
Speaker 1 (02:26:54):
And you know now not everybody on a panel is
a top fifty, player Of All Time, like charles wan
no so sometimes like but like, if Guys are Bad
Like i'm Watching hockey night, in canada Last night like
the exit has no problem. Calling, a guy, out no
you know, YOU KNOW it's yeah i nfl feels LIKE When,
you're watching nfl sunday everyone's all, Kind Of, you. Know

was in the practice. Squad all last season he isn't
kind of against roster because He's A He's a european. Bubba.
Thomas defensive tackle uh so those guys are here, for
today and tomorrow, but then after That everybody. Else is
they're gone the, rookies are all gone and the only
guys that stick around are the, aforementioned second year players
(02:27:57):
