December 28, 201828 min
What do you do when you get triggered? Pamela Cordano, MFT gives us a few simple, yet powerful tools to stock in our triggered triage kit. This is a must-listen for anyone who has experienced the intensity of a triggering moment and felt helpless and stuck in overwhelm. Show Notes Topics We Discussed What happens to our body when we get triggered: the physiological response, the fight or flight or freeze feeling, intense overwhelm There are levels of triggers: mildy triggered, moderately triggered, severely triggered. This kit is the most helpful for mild or moderate trigger situations. Triggered Triage Kit: Pause AKA The Sacred Pause Breathing - a couple of deep breaths, let your shoulders drop down With a kind voice - ask yourself, “what is happening right now” and pay attention to the sensations in your body Replacing the default network going to the direct experience network Instead of going to our unhealthy soothing behaviours (like ice cream or four hours of candy crush) what we can go towards instead - let’s see if we can feel this feeling for just five more minutes.
