So, if I might ask, what are you waiting for at the moment? It seems that we're always waiting for some good thing to happen or some lousy thing to be over and done with. And the longer we wait, the more difficult it becomes, so the more likely we are to let our emotions get the better of us.
You and I both know that discomfort makes us twitchy; suffering makes us anxious; injustice makes us angry; a delayed breakthrough makes us impatient. And, by the way, the list of unhelpful emotional responses goes on. So whatever we happen to be waiting for, those responses can cause us to do things that, if we stood back and thought about it, we probably shouldn't do.
But emotions are emotions, and so we react to the situation we find ourselves in.
Yesterday we chatted about waiting well – waiting on God, who is good to those who love Him, rather than on the toss of a coin that our situation will turn out in our favour. Today, let's take that one step further:
Psalm 37:7-8 Trust in the LORD and wait quietly for his help. Don't be angry when people make evil plans and succeed. Don't become so angry and upset that you, too, want to do evil.
Something special happens when we choose to trust in God rather than in our circumstances. He steadies our emotions; He calms our nerves; He quietens our spirit.
And when your emotions, yet again, threaten to rise up and get the better of you, to lead you into something that you'll later come to regret … go back to God. You can't go wrong.
Trust in the LORD and wait quietly for his help.
That's His Word. Fresh … for you … today.
