Hard Knocks dropped its Seattle Seahawks premiere and we watched it live so we can all react to it together. We break down the ring ceremony (a little bit buzzed John Schneider is a top moment along with Sam Darnold dropping his ring), and we get to see what Mike Macdonald's "secret sauce is connection" philosophy actually looks like on camera. Nick Emmanwori is already getting the standout-player treatment, so should we be concerned that he may not be ready in time for the start of the season? Plus training camp fights, the Devon Witherspoon contract "Soon-O-Meter," a Sam Darnold reality check, and Cooper Kupp looking like a future coach.

Brandan (00:11):
And welcome to the Seahawkers podcast.
I'm your host, Brandan Schulze, and I am joined by my good buddy
Clinton Bonner, as we are doing a Hard Knocks post episode recap.
So hopefully everybody tuned in right when it was available on HBO if,
i- if you're going to follow along with this conversation, because,

(00:31):
we, we were right there at the beginning, and, here we go, buddy.

Clinton (00:35):
Blue Angels, the whole thing already, Brandan.
Spoiler alert, the spoilers will spill out.
So if you have, have not watched it yet, well, I don't know what to tell you.
Get in.
But Brandan, winners get sprinkles, and our Seattle Seahawks got
a whole bunch of sprinkles.
And I feel like the entire content community and all the 12s, all
the Flockers, that was fun.
And it was like, I was very kind of enamored with…

(00:59):
I love storytelling, and I kind of like documentaries in general.
But dude, what, 55 minutes, and there's probably three, four, five
major storylines they pumped in there.
And I'm excited to see what you thought was the most like, you know, maybe flashy
or fun or exciting or, or net new for you.
But dude, kudos to the people who put that all together because that's

(01:20):
a lot to jam in one episode in one week of NFL, you know, pre-season.
That was awesome.

Brandan (01:26):
They, they packed in, America With the Blue Angels and the Eagle.
And the Bald Eagles.
Yeah, yeah.
they packed in, vomit.
they packed in, Brady Russell getting peed on.
Yeah.
and, and they packed in a monster truck, like right at the beginning with
Minotaur Derick Hall rolling in in, the truck that I think we all wish

(01:48):
that we had when we were 10 years old.

Clinton (01:50):
The coolest part about that truck is that when you watch
Derick Hall, you know, on whatever other stuff you might follow him, you
realize he puts those things together.
Like that's the cool part.
Like he doesn't just go buy a cool truck.
He works on trucks like that with his hands and his brain.
So, kudos to Derick Hall, not just for the short shorts, because
boy oh boy, Brandan, they were leaving little to the imagination.

Brandan (02:14):
The short shorts.
I know, Lisa was excited-
about the short shorts and Derick Hall.
We've got our live executive producer, Ryan911, coming in with a 999 super chat.
That was awesome.
I need a get the F lined up hoodie.
maybe, maybe we start there with our favorite lines because, I've
got a question for you, Clinton.

Clinton (02:35):
Yes.

Brandan (02:36):
Where's my super suit?

Clinton (02:38):
Amazing.
Love Leo breaking out, the Incredibles breaking out, you know, Samuel L.
Jackson, Frozone.
I gotta tell you, I wa- I wanna hear about your favorite line as
well from the entire episode too.
But for me, I w- I, I wr- I went into this, Brandan, really in
love with the man Leo Williams.
I exit this maybe more in love with the man Leo Williams.

(03:00):
Didn't think it was possible.
Did not think it was possible, Brandan, but here I am, 55 minutes later, being
like, "That dude might be my favorite human being on the entire planet."
And, I don't know what to say about it.
Just he's- He's got, he's got it all.
And there was other things he did in this episode that I
thought were really cool too.
But I love that line.
What was your favorite line of, or most memorable for you?

Brandan (03:19):
Okay.
My, my favorite part, it, it was actually a combination of lines between
two people because you had, little Jack Macdonald in the office out looking
over the football field, and his, he's saying to his mom, "Football."

Clinton (03:34):
Mm-hmm.

" Brandan (03:34):
Football."
And then the very next line you hear is Sam Darnold saying- Sam … "Football."

Clinton (03:39):
Yeah.
Great, great editing.
Did you notice, so Jack Macdonald's, he's, you know, got a driver in the office.
That's always great with a, with a, you know, the mom there,
I think her name's Stephanie.
and did you notice the jersey that little Jack Macdonald was rocking?

Brandan (03:54):
He was rocking, Mr.
Witherspoon's jersey.

Clinton (03:57):
He sure was.
That's right, a 21 jersey, right?
So just these little droplets, just these little things, these little hints.
That section where, where they really kind of just dialed
in with, with Schneider, and then back to Spoon in his car.
He's like, "You know, when you got a player like me," just, he's like-

(04:17):
Just, just pay me.
You know, just like, it was kind of simple, like just pay a great,
unbelievable corner that could do all the things that I can go do.
Do you, did you exit, we talked about it this, this week a bit in a
couple different shows, did you exit this episode more confident, less
confident that Spoon will get paid?
And like on the Soon-O-Meter, what did, what did you think?
Anything change for you?

Brandan (04:38):
I, I think I exited being confident.
Because I, I don't think that they set up that storyline
without it paying off, right?
Yeah.
Because th- they've kind of set it up now with, okay, they talked about the
agent and having, and John Schneider being, oh, real concerned about the,
that Spoon was wigged out by the fact that it went out in the media- Mm-hmm

(04:59):
and felt like it was the, the organization trying to pressure him.
And them going, "Hey, you gotta, you gotta get on the phone with the agent
to say it wasn't coming from us."
Then you had Spoon in the car.
So I, I feel like it, it's getting the ball rolling to pay off
before the end of Hard Knocks.

Clinton (05:15):
I like that.
So what was it, five episode run, correct?
We got four more.

Brandan (05:19):
It is five episodes, yeah.

Clinton (05:20):
Okay.
So maybe by, by the time…
'Cause it's one of those things where if there's a real arc, you
don't do this in like episode five.
You take care of it somewhere like three and a half, four, so you can
like continue the, continue the Spoon story and the arc into the season
without worry hanging over you.
You know, like you watch a superhero movie, the last scene is

(05:40):
not the, him beating the villain.
There's, there's, they beat the villain and then there's some conclusion
where, where storylines wrap up.
So this is Hollywood after all, Brandan, so three and a half weeks in or so,
Spoon will be signed, put in the books.

Brandan (05:55):
I, I do feel like, yeah, there's a story to be told there and,
and the fact that they started with that.
Just the idea too of what a great, thing for Hard Knocks, and
appreciate Michael Knight coming in with the $10 Super Chat.
But-

Clinton (06:07):
Yes,

Brandan (06:07):
thank you … what a, what a great thing for Hard Knocks.
Because so much in the past- We get bad teams.
Yeah.
And now we get the Super Bowl champions.
And so we get to see what it's like.
A- and it, and it started off in the episode, right?
With the, the ring ceremony, and gosh, the, the frigging rings dropping down
from the ceiling- … so that everybody could get theirs all at the same time.

(06:28):
and, that was almost as wild as Derick Hall's truck.

Clinton (06:33):
Almost.
I love the very, very beginning, with the rings.
We knew they came down from the ceiling.
We, we, you know, saw that on social media previously.
What I loved was, I like a little bit buzzed John Schneider.
I'm a fan of a little bit buzzed John Schneider.
He gets l- a little loose, and you can see in the very beginning, I
think he's talking to Kupp, 'cause Cooper already saw the ring, 'cause I
think he was like, 'cause he's in…

(06:54):
He's at…
Well, Cooper's at everything.
Cooper's at Taylor Swift's wedding.
Cooper is a coach.
And Cooper apparently helped design the ring with De Beers.
But all these things, but you get John a little bit loose.
You see he's got a glass of beer, very fancy Art Deco glass of beer, by the way.
Very nice.
Very classy.
but you get John a little bit loose.
You know, you can hear a little bit of a slur to his speech,

(07:16):
and you can see he's having fun.
And then you get Mike with the little bit of scotch, nice and neat, classy.
And then you see John back up on the stage, and he's, he's cheers, and while
the, while everybody's celebrating the, the Super Bowl, so the, the rings.
That was a cool start, and it was…
One, one other thing I think that also you mentioned, like, we got bad
teams and some bad organizations in years past with, with Hard Knocks.

(07:40):
In general, I think the Seattle organization looks great.
You know, not only are they Super Bowl champions, but it j- like, the
facilities, the VMAX, the way, the setting, the team, the coach, the
smarts, the, the fired-upness of the assistant coaches, the, the depth of
some of the veterans on this team.

(08:00):
Like, the holistic picture so far is, like, this is an
extremely well organization.
And while some things in Hollywood are, you know, kind of fan fiction, Brandan,
I don't think that one is actually…
They don't gotta stretch to be like, "This is a very well-run organization."

Brandan (08:15):
Yeah.
And I think that's gotta be one of the big takeaways to start things off, right?
It was, that's, it, just the approach and, and the way of building it.
we, we, we've gotten little bits here and there through the press conferences,
through the reporting of, of, what it sounds like behind the scenes.

(08:37):
But then, you know, the cameras take us in to…
You know, we get to see the, the PowerPoint up on the, up on
the screen of, of how they wanna do things and, and talking about…
Now, I wasn't super happy that they let loose Mike Macdonald's secret
sauce and, and him quoting the, the secret sauce is connection.
'Cause I, I really do think that that's what it is.

(08:59):
And,- A- and, and so I think he's onto something there.
So, beyond all that I think that one of the cooler things for me too
was this was the first time that we got to see Coach Mike with just
one-on-one with individual players- Mm
and seeing how those types of interactions go.

Clinton (09:20):
Yeah.
I mean, and it's, it's…
He seems a bit more, even more natural in the one-on-one settings, where he,
where he s- seems to be probably still finding his voice as a head coach.
And I love when he's in front of the full room, he's…
And he knows it, but he's got a little bit of Michael Scott to
him, but in an endearing way.
But he's a, he's an insanely competent Michael Scott.

(09:41):
Like, take all the great things- Sure … that Michael Scott is as a caring human
being for the humans he cares for, right?
In a fictional show.
But, but he's got that awkwardness, and he leans into that awkwardness
in front of a, a larger crowd.
One-on-one, you know, he's, he's got, he puts on the, the
psychology hat strongly, right?
And really kind of keeps fo- the team and the players individually seemingly

(10:05):
focused on what they need to focus on.
I think the Nick Emmanwori piece was pretty cool.
It's nice that, like, Mike could have a conversation like that in
front of cameras and all, all that jazz, but he, like, to me, he didn't
have to go say too much to Nick.
He actually could be like, "Well, what do you think I'm gonna say?"

(10:26):
Like, what, that, "You've heard this before.
What do you think I'm gonna say here?"
And, and that was kind of neat.
It w- I liked that as well, Brandan.
So don't know if you had more about his kind of psychology
hat, or I also wanted to ask you about, did anything concern you?
I just brought, brought up Nick Emmanwori.
Any concerns about that piece or, or anything else we saw in the episode?

Brandan (10:47):
I, the, I suppose the concern is just over, around the concern that,
how much they, emphasis they put on Nick Emmanwori being- Mm-hmm …
an important part of that defense.
We got J Scott AZ in chat saying, "In a way, his philosophy seems the
opposite of the do your job idea."
Mm.
"Do your job feels so individual focused."

(11:09):
And, the one thing that I, I liked from Mike with that interaction
with Nick Emmanwori was him saying, you know, "The number one thing is
what's best for you and the team."

Clinton (11:19):
Mm-hmm.

Brandan (11:20):
And that was the quote that I took away from that.
the, the next thing was, h- how even, you got to see even
Coach Mike taking or having, w- taking receipts, right?
The, the- Yeah … Rex Ryan bit and- Yep … and him saying, "This new
hotshot coordinator is terrible," and how that stuck with him, and, yeah.

(11:41):
The, that's, he's even kept taking note of that and how he's
turned Rex Ryan around from that.

Clinton (11:46):
Yeah.
I, I do…
It's nice because you, you don't really get even that side of Mike
too often or think that he's,…
You know, we all have a bit of pettiness, and, and maybe that's pettiness, maybe
it's not, but just that I'm gonna keep that in my little locker and keep
that chip on my shoulder type thing.
And, you know, for Mike at this point, after a…
I mean, he, he's so young, and yet he has very little, in my

(12:08):
opinion, to prove as an NFL coach, which has gotta be his own battle.
You know, like- But I think he's wired, extraordinarily well to not only lead
the men in that room and, and everybody in the, in the organization, but to
keep challenging himself in a way, too.
You know?
I think these-- He, while he's talking about the '91 Bulls, which is cool, and

(12:30):
about how Phil Jackson got basically Michael Jordan to spread the ball around
or the team to s- to stop relying on Jordan to dump 50 every mon- every
night, and they got better as a team.
But in the back of my head, I'm like, I understand the point of like, yeah,
we wanna go get better, but we were 17 and 3 last year, and I didn't
feel like there was a Michael Jordan.

(12:50):
It felt like, to me, last year was more like, well, that was kinda
like the '91 Bulls already somehow.
Right.
So maybe are we…
Is the point, well, we could just march on to the '92, '93 portion of this.
I, I was kind of tussling with that.
That was more

Brandan (13:03):
my takeaway of it, is just that importance of that was
what got them there the first time- Mm … and now this is what we need
to continue to go on to, to do the two-peat, three-peat, type thing.
So y- that was definitely more of my takeaway with it.
And Amy Helms in chat saying, "Didn't feel as much like receipts as I don't want to
be the guy that cares about that anymore."

(13:23):
Because yeah, th- it was one of the things that we heard from Mike,
too, is that he was that guy- Yeah

Clinton (13:31):
Now

Brandan (13:31):
very- He has moved on from that.

Clinton (13:32):
Yeah, very, very good point there, Amy.
We're gonna dissect that further.
You're, you're, you ain't wrong, a- as we'd say.
So, so that was…
So the Emmanwori part was interesting to me as well, not just the
conversation, but the clear…
And again, you know, HBO is gonna capture what they capture and
they're gonna create narratives.
That's what documentaries do.
You leave out way, way more than you put in.
That's just the way it goes.

(13:54):
But he still said what he said about, like, when he's sitting around
the couch being like, "Hey, if we don't have Nick, he's a pretty,
pretty big freaking loss, right?"
And he has to look around and be like, "Right?"
You know?
So interesting, and, you know, h- hopefully Nick is just making
his way back easily to week one.
But I mean, dude, it's August 4th right now, and we play a game in 35 days.

(14:17):
So- Is

Brandan (14:17):
that right?

Clinton (14:18):
I, I just…
What, September 9, right?
So-

Brandan (14:20):
Yeah

… Clinton (14:20):
I just wonder if he'll be actually ready if
he's scooting about a week ago.
It, it seems a little bit, it seems a little unreasonable to think
he'll be out there full speed if last week he was scooting around.

Brandan (14:34):
Yeah.
Well, that'll be part of the storyline too.
So,- Sure … we'll get to see how, how that continues to go.
Michael Knight in chat saying, "I even, I have even less doubt now.
We are building a dynasty based solely on the quality of brass we have.
Hopefully, the new ownership team stays out of the building."
yes, we, we can, we can hope that, that it just continues

(14:54):
to build on last season.
DJ Nichols saying, "More than the talent on the team, Mike's
whole philosophy has me delusional that we really can repeat."
That, I, y- and yeah, I don't think it's delusion to, to think that it can,
to think that we can't repeat.
Marlon85 saying, "Do you think a deal has been done, but
waiting to make a storyline?"

(15:15):
I, I think the- Maybe … I don't think that they would be able to
keep that under wraps, Marlon.
But I think that they probably know enough between the two sides that,
that it has to resolve itself, I think, by the start of the season.
I, I think that I just don't know if they would feature it that much if both

(15:38):
sides don't have that sense that there's going to be a resolution at some point.

Clinton (15:42):
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
I-

Brandan (15:43):
And that's more where I was going with it, not, not necessarily that I, I
think that they, they're keeping it under wraps only to resolve it on the show.

Clinton (15:51):
Well, and it's also not that big of a surprise.
Like, it's going to happen.
He's going to get, he's going to get paid.
And you c- And the, the nice part from this, the last thing I'd say about
Spoon is, you know, he's not sitting there with a, with a grump on his face.
You know, he's there, he's very, very engaged, he's having fun, he's barking,
he's talking, you know, talking his talk, and he's just, he's out there smiling.

(16:15):
You know, so he's not sitting there like, you know, "Woe is me, I haven't gotten
my, my $150 million extension yet."
He knows it's coming, which, which I think is really cool.
So Brandan, there was, you know, let's see.
There was a kind of a, there was a segment on Sam, there was a segment on
Eman, there was a segment on, Spoon.
one player and room we haven't talked about yet at all, we

(16:38):
haven't talked running backs yet.
What'd you think about the running backs segment in general, and some
of the shine that they were clearly putting on JD, or, you know, JP,
very, very early in his career?

Brandan (16:51):
Yeah, we got to see senior offensive assistants and running
backs coach Thomas Hammock, leading the meeting room there,
and, that was interesting.
I, I think, we had some- Yeah, the F

Clinton (17:01):
bomb Thomas, the F bomb Hammock.

Brandan (17:02):
Yeah, he- Thomas the F bomb Hammock, yes.
He likes that word.
no, no, no censor ship, on HBO, so, you get it all.
And yeah, so we didn't get to hear from Jadarian Price, but we got to hear from
all of the teammates, we even got to hear a little bit from the coaches.
We got to see Coach Hamm saying, that, he doesn't talk much,

(17:24):
but, that he's very competitive.
Mm-hmm.
We got to see Spoon and Byron Murphy, both, being impressed
with, with Jadarian Price.
We got to see him catching passes downfield.
So, yeah, he was well featured despite not being micd up.

Clinton (17:41):
Yeah.
well said.
The, the Price stuff, of all the things you just mentioned, you
know, the footage is gorgeous.
He's a- carved out of marble, he's absolutely jacked.
he did, he did speak a little bit, right?
He had, like, a little segment where he was talking off-camera, like one-to-one.
He did.
Okay.
He was, like, in the facility.
and extremely, extremely smart dude, coming from Notre Dame.

(18:06):
And so to go from Notre Dame, which is very, very well run in, from a college
football sense, to the Seahawks, very well run, he seems very
grateful to be there, which I think is amazing and, and very cool to see.
The Byron Murphy stuff, when he's talking about- Price's cutback ability.
Like to me, that's the biggest blossoming, like, okay cool.

(18:27):
First of all, Murphy knows a lot about stopping the run in the NFL.
A lot, a lot, a lot.
And when he can spot a talent that could cut back a field and go back against
the grain, you know, okay, so they're pr- whatever, they're running right,
and, and the lane, and it overshifts and he, he has to break it back left
and, you know, bounce it around the edge, or take it back through the,

(18:47):
the three or something like that.
But to hear Murphy be like, "Yeah, the way he moves when he, when he wants to
cut it back against the grain," he's like, he's like, "That's something."
So that got me excited, Brandan, because again, Murphy's seen a lot,
and this goes back to his Texas days.
He played high, high level college football, and and
he's been on a, a heck of a line.

(19:08):
So that part in particular, mixed with the footage, I was like, oh man, I think,
I think Price's stock in general, like fantasy football stock and all that
stuff, I guarantee you his stock as a, oh man, he's, he might be the, the,
the starter, is rising as we speak.

Brandan (19:23):
Yeah.
It, it'll be interesting to see if they give us any more shots of
the board and the general manager.
I don't know if it was, in John Schneider's office, but I think it was.

Clinton (19:33):
Right, right,

Brandan (19:33):
when they had the blank names.
Yeah Of, of the board that they had all the names, and everything was blurred
out, but obviously they were pointing at the running back where it was about
five deep, and you had one pushed in a little bit, which I have to assume was
Zach Charbonnet because he's injured.
Mm.
And so, you know, who, how do you know if there's, a couple names
above, or you, you could see there was a couple names above there, and you

(19:57):
could see in the quarterback's area too where it was, you had one name-
One … and then you had two side by

Clinton (20:03):
side.
One, two.
Yep, yep, yep.
So- You noticed that too, right?
Very good.
I, I- Trying to

Brandan (20:08):
pick up as much as I can because-

Clinton (20:09):
I know …

Brandan (20:09):
you know, th-

Clinton (20:10):
Oh no, they, hey, the cameras are there, you know, for us Matlocks.
Now the fu- I have to admit, when you just said what you said, that
the cameras were, the cameras blurred the names, I didn't realize that.
I was like, oh, they're just all blank and they're setting them up for later.
I liter- I literally thought that.
That's what I thought, and then like, of course, they just
blurred the names, dum-dum.
So that's on me.

(20:31):
that's, that, that's me.
That's dumb.
But, that, what you said makes a lot of sense, 'cause that was true, but the
quarterback part was interesting, right?
Yeah.
Just like, okay, you know.
So is there a battle at two?
And-

Brandan (20:43):
Well, we heard there was a battle at two.

Clinton (20:44):
Correct

Brandan (20:45):
Based off of what, Ian Rapoport's reporting, right?
And we kinda made fun of it a little bit.
Well, of course, you know, the, the two quarterbacks- Right … behind
Sam are gonna be battling.
But when you see the names side by side, it does, I think- Give
that maybe a little more…
It, it gives the reporting a little bit more…
There, there's more to it- Yeah … than just the obviousness of it.

Clinton (21:07):
Well, and the thing with this team is, we talk about
it a lot, it's a deep roster.
So when you get down to 53 in your practice squad, and who can you sneak
to the practice squad, look, keeping three quarterbacks, it, it stops
you from keeping one other dude, who might be Emmanuel Henderson, right?
If Cody White's the…
So just guys like that that are, like, solid.

(21:28):
so that part's very interesting to me too, because whatever, I think A- Adams
Do Better was the guy who, like, had these trade ideas and was like, "Trade Milroe."
It's like, no, I, I think the way more likely scenario, if they were to make
a trade, would be if Milroe progresses the way he seems to be, would be one
quarterback is going to get hurt.

(21:49):
I hate to say it, and I'm not saying a Seahawks quarterback.
I mean, a quarterback in the NFL is gonna get hurt in the next four weeks.

Brandan (21:54):
Right.

Clinton (21:54):
And you, if, if Milroe is ready to take over that true two
spot, well, then you trade Drew.
You say, "Drew, go ahead.
Go, go play football."
Go be a

Brandan (22:01):
number one somewhere.

Clinton (22:02):
Go be a- Yeah
go play.
Go throw the ball around, dude.
You know you can.
And you give him a crack to go do that, and you probably recoup
a third or a fourth, because of the, because of the need.
Not, not that he would get that in Nev- normally, but in that situation,
he might, he might garner that.
especially if it's a team that feels that they could compete or if it's,
like, the quarterback's out for six weeks, not the full year type thing.

(22:23):
Stuff happens.
So it'll just be interesting to watch- Well, we play the Cowboys on
the 15th, I think, is the first game.
How much Milroe we see, how progressed he is.
But I mean, he, we didn't get a lot of him in, in, in Hard Knocks.
I know we're reviewing that now, but we got a lot of Milroe this last past
week, and he does look markedly better, so certainly something to watch.

Brandan (22:43):
Yeah.
It'll be interesting if we get a little more depth at the, the
quarterback battle- Mm-hmm … as we go throughout, the, the Hard Knocks.
You know, one thing we haven't talked about yet was what was featured at the
end, Clinton, and that was the fighting.

Clinton (22:57):
Yeah,

Brandan (22:57):
yeah.
We got some fighting.

Clinton (22:59):
I didn't mind it.
You know, especially as you watch…
I don't think Mike, more importantly, like what do I mind?
It's like, oh, cool.
Yeah, dude.
but more importantly, Mike Macdonald didn't mind it either.
He didn't like some of the cheap stuff.
He didn't like- Yeah … some of the kinda name-calling stuff, and he called it out.

Brandan (23:14):
And the stuff that he didn't like, he- He

Clinton (23:15):
called out directly

Brandan (23:16):
yeah, he called it out and

- Clinton (23:18):
Right, right

… Brandan (23:18):
and, yeah, tried

Clinton (23:19):
to fix the

Brandan (23:19):
issue.
But,

Clinton (23:20):
but, or/and as it was starting to simmer, it's because Mike's
like, "Hey, we're, we're losing this…
We're losing 15-1."
He's like, "We're losing 16-1," the way, whatever the however they keep
their scoring mechanism- Mm … like play by play, or maybe it's series
by series, probably play by play.
But he's like, he's like, "Hey, defense, you're getting your ass handed to you

(23:40):
by the offense over and over and over."
I mean, you know, in, in a hockey game, you go down 2-0, 3-0 and you're
getting pushed around, usually you're…
Somebody drops the gloves.
You try to stimulate something, and you try to ma- you lit-
literally try to manufacture something to s- create a spark.
It's no different.
luckily, you know, no one's getting hurt and stuff like that.

(24:03):
I do- I personally don't mind the fighting whatsoever.
you know, a- and then if they wanna get mad at Hall for
ripping a guy down from the back-

Brandan (24:09):
From behind, yeah

… Clinton (24:10):
from Cable do.
don't hurt anybody, that, that's all.
But, but the chippiness I think is very, very healthy in my opinion.

Brandan (24:17):
Yeah.
I, I think that, well, and that's something that we see in every
training camp, I- Yeah … feel like.
I haven't watched Hard Knocks, but I have to imagine that's not the first
time that a fight has been featured.

Clinton (24:28):
Didn't, didn't Metcalf swing a helmet a couple of years ago?
Like, hard.

Brandan (24:31):
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
it- that was at a training camp that I think I was even at.
It, that seemed, yeah, more brutal than even what we saw here, so.

Clinton (24:39):
Well, yeah, 'cause he was using a weapon.
Right.
Yes.
Helmets hurt, man.

Brandan (24:43):
So yeah, Derick Hall just, going after Cable do from behind.
But, yeah, and that, that felt like the more serious one because
it was, like, Connor O'Toole and Bobby Horton getting into it.
Yeah.
And I'm like, "Okay, well, if these guys, fight, okay."
But, yeah, it got, a little more serious I felt like with,

(25:04):
Derick Hall getting into it.

Clinton (25:06):
Yeah, I agree.
and then, and then the more playful side of it after practice, they show the
hugging and all that stuff, which was fun.
But how about Derick Hall trying to wrestle Leo Williams- Yes
and Leo Williams being like, what'd he call him?
Unc.
He called himself Unc.
Yeah.
He's like, "Nah," he has, he has, like, that Unc strength.
I mean, imagine how strong Derick Hall is 'cause I can tell you, he's really strong.

(25:27):
You know, he's like this- He's really strong.
He's really

Brandan (25:28):
strong.
He has, he has, like, the long arm leverage too.

Clinton (25:31):
Yes.

Brandan (25:32):
Yeah.
And Leo still,- Still- … took it over and took him down.

Clinton (25:35):
Yeah, that was another reason Leo was my favorite.
But still,

Brandan (25:37):
with that too, I'm thinking, "Oh, please don't get hurt.
Please don't get hurt."
Right.
Of

Clinton (25:40):
course.
But…
Yeah, of, of…
Absolutely.
Don't get hurt.
and luckily just whatever the…
It was a clean takedown by Leo, but just goes to show you
freaking Leo's absolute- Yeah
crazy, crazy strength.
yeah, I mean, man.
So I get to l- we get the Fro Zone.
Oh, how about one last, one last…
Well, we've got Sam.
Mm-hmm.
Anything about Sam.
Spinning the ball, it looks beautiful.

(26:02):
It's in slow motion, how could it not look good?
but any takeaways from our quarterback?

Brandan (26:09):
Man, he just…
Well, I think the one quote that stood out was him having to remind himself
or, or being reminded that, yeah, we, we won the Super Bowl, and I kind
of love that about him, that he…
It didn't stick with him like, like, oh, going into the season, "Well, hey, now

(26:30):
I'm, I'm Super Bowl champion Sam Darnold."
he obviously doesn't think that because it, it j- seems like Sam hasn't
changed because of, of, you know, the team going the distance last year.

Clinton (26:44):
I, I think so, too.
You know, he see- he seems extremely well-grounded and kind of satisfied.
I'm not saying he's not hungry and trying to get better every day,
but, like, not that like, "Ooh, I've arrived, so I can stop," but
more like, "I've, I'm here, and I'm, and I'm at a good spot," you know?
He seems, he seems settled in that way, and I mean that in a
positive way, not the negative way.

Brandan (27:06):
Now are you concerned, though, that he dropped the ring?

Clinton (27:10):
Not really.
It was tricky.
It came from the ceiling, so I'm not, I'm not too concerned, right?
So, you know, his more important ring with the fiancée that became the
wife, successful, so all, all good.
But yeah, that was…
The, the piece for Sam that I thought was a little bit constructed
by the HBO gods was when they jammed the LeBron stuff in there.
They j- you know, like, I know LeBron's news.

(27:31):
He's the biggest basketball player in the world.
I get all that.
But when they're talking about like, and Sam says, "Oh, man,"
the people are getting on him 'cause he went to Philadelphia,
and Philadelphia's a good team.

Brandan (27:39):
Oh.

Clinton (27:40):
I was like, "Sam, are you projecting a little bit,
like, a little, a little bit?
Is there some projection here that you, you're manifesting?"
I thought-

Brandan (27:46):
He thinks he's LeBron.
Yeah.
That obviously- … that's what Sam's there.
Clearly.

Clinton (27:50):
He's, well,

Brandan (27:50):
they had- He's, he's definitely directly comparing
himself to LeBron James.

Clinton (27:53):
Well, they had the goat at the beginning when Brady Russell got, got
peed on, and Brady Russell seems like fun.
One dude you want at a wedding with you- Of course

Brandan (28:00):
he would be the one to pick up the goat.

Clinton (28:02):
Exactly.

" Brandan (28:03):
Oh, I can pick him up?"

Clinton (28:03):
Exactly.
"Oh, it's a, it's a full petting zoo?
That means I can pick the goat up?"
You know, you're…
He's like, like Sloth.
Like, you're, "You're gonna live with us now," right?
It's like, by the way, the end of "Goonies," what, what are the cops doing?
There's a billion dollars floating away slowly, slowly.
They're like, "Ah, just don't worry about the, the pirate ship
with billions of dollars in gold."

(28:24):
And then they're gonna let Chunk and family just take home Sloth.
It's just like, you, you're, you're gonna live with us now.
But Sloth

Brandan (28:31):
is a grown adult.
He can decide who he wants to live with.
He, and where he wants to-

Clinton (28:34):
Man, there are statutes that I think, I don't, I don't know.
If we have any Esquires in the crowd, I, I'm not sure that Sloth
is, can make those decisions.
I love Sloth, but we might have gotten off the rails here, Brandan, possibly.

Brandan (28:46):
Yeah, we, we can blame it on Brady Russell because,-
between the goat and him dancing, at the start of the meeting,
yeah, DJ Nichols in chat saying, "Brady Russell might just
be this generation's Luke Wilson."

Clinton (28:59):
Right,

Brandan (28:59):
yeah.
And, I think that's true.

Clinton (29:01):
Yeah, very, very fun.
I guess the last thing for me that came through, Brandan, was-
We started calling Cooper Kupp, you know, Coach Kupp last year.
Mm-hmm.
And it's like, okay, it seems like, it seems like this is what's happening.
And oh, by the way, people say this is what's happening that are in the room.
Right.
Any impressions?

Brandan (29:18):
I need to go back and watch that scene, or maybe you can break
it down fully, because that was one of the things that I- it didn't fully
hit me e- exactly what was happening between him and Coach Mike and Coop
saying something, and then like-

Clinton (29:32):
Yeah,

Brandan (29:32):
but he celebrated
Mike Macdonald putting his hands in the air.
I, I, I feel like that's one that I need to go back and diagnose
what happened, but maybe you saw.

Clinton (29:38):
I mean, it's just, I mean, Mike says s- very simply like,
"Oh, they were under center the whole time," something like that.
Something about them just being under center.
So I think my, my brain went to that there was a concept that
they can run under center, maybe that last year or some form of it.
They were, they were like, "We, we can't do that from under center."

(30:00):
Like that was the, that's what I think was happening.
Like, "Oh man, they're doing it from under center."
So I m- I, I don't know.
Maybe, maybe- Yeah … Kupp was showing them something.
Also, it didn't exactly seem in that moment that Kupp actually did
anything in that particular scene.
It seemed like Mike thought about it, and then Kupp was like, you know, "You're
welcome," but I don't think he meant it.
I think that was more HBO magic in my opinion.

(30:20):
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
I really don't think that was something that Cooper magically unlocked.
I think HBO just wanted to make it look that way.
That was my take.

Brandan (30:27):
Okay.
All right.
Well, it, it was, it was a scene where I, I felt like I was missing
something, and so, yeah.

Clinton (30:34):
I think they were trying to make a little bit of a storyline that
maybe wasn't exactly, there in that moment, which is what documentaries do.
But I, but the idea of Kupp being that player coach, and whenever
this contract is up, the fact that he is from Washington, I mean, I
think he could literally just stay.

(30:54):
Like, okay, like you now run the wide receiver room, or you're now,
you know, assistant, OC or heck, who knows what happens, right?
So after Fleury becomes a, a head coach after we win another Super Bowl, maybe-

Brandan (31:06):
Yeah, don't let him leave like he left, let KJ Wright leave.
That's-

Clinton (31:09):
Exactly.
Exactly

… Brandan (31:10):
Ryan911 saying, "I'm a long time fan of Cooper Kupp since last year-"
which I assume was his first year in the league."
That it's really the only time that matters.
Whistle Jacket, Lisa in chat, "Giving the googly eyes to the Minotaur."

Clinton (31:24):
Yeah.
Everything about the short shorts, the, the, the Ford.
Was it a Ford?
I don't even know.
The, the, whatever the big ass truck he had, and also he was fun.
You know, he was fun.
They showed, by the way, last thing for me, they showed shadow boxing and
I still think shadow boxing's stupid.
It doesn't, like-

Brandan (31:38):
I don't, I don't understand the moves.
- I

Clinton (31:41):
don't get it.

Brandan (31:41):
Yeah.

Clinton (31:42):
It's just like, well, you gotta like-

Brandan (31:43):
I need a breakdown.

Clinton (31:44):
I don't.

Brandan (31:44):
Explain it to me.

Clinton (31:45):
Break it down.
I don't.
I don't.
I wanna ignore it and just, if they like doing it and it's
brotherly love to them, fine.
But I'm just like, well, I don't, I don't get it.
I wanna,

Brandan (31:55):
I wanna get into the competition.
That's-

Clinton (31:56):
I don't.
I don't.
They can have it.
That's- It's cool.

Brandan (32:00):
All right.
Well, a big thanks to everybody who tuned in to us live after the show.
It, it was fun.
Maybe we'll do this maybe weekly.
We'll have to see how it goes.

Clinton (32:11):
I mean, I'm available on Tuesdays.
I don't know about you, so Tuesdays are great.

Brandan (32:14):
I'm gonna be watching the show anyway, and now I feel like it's, it's
gotta be appointment television for me.
Now it's- It's our Seahawks.
I know.
When do we…
When have we ever gotten a, a Seahawks show that's, on HBO, that really feels
like we have to watch it, I think to-

Clinton (32:28):
today.
Yeah.
Today was

Brandan (32:29):
the first time

Clinton (32:29):
ever.

Brandan (32:30):
It was, it was the first time ever, so.

Clinton (32:31):
Right.
We got four more, so I'm in if you're in.
Like, why not?
Well, we also got almost 200 people with u- with us live right
now, so if you haven't already, hit the like, hit the subscribe.
If it's your first time watching the Seahawkers podcast, well, what can we say?
Welcome.
Welcome to the Flock.
Welcome,

Brandan (32:45):
welcome.
Get

Clinton (32:46):
in.
And thanks to- Subscribe

… Brandan (32:47):
our producers, Ryan911, Michael Knight, for coming in, and thanks to all
the little Flockers who joined us in chat.
and yeah, we will be back later on talking Seahawks.

Clinton (32:57):
It'll be fun.
And hey, you and Adam just put out the Know Your Rivals yesterday with the Rams.
Yes.
It's two hours.
It's a lot of fun.
It's a lot of making fun of McVay, and then you guys spin it and talk
about the 49ers in the second half.
So if y- anybody out there hasn't seen that yet, I enjoyed it all this
morning, and it was a lot of fun.
So it's just…
I love that.
It was good stuff, plus you get to make fun of McVay, and who doesn't like that?

(33:21):
Who doesn't?
Yeah.
It's the best.
He's the worst.
Of

Brandan (33:22):
course.
well, and that's the thing.
We aren't gonna get to see the Rams until Christmas.
Right.
So this is really…
I mean, we're still gonna be following along our NFC rivals throughout
the year, but th- that's probably gonna be the last time you get as
much Rams content from us until the week leading up to Christmas Day.

Clinton (33:41):
Correct, and when the Rams are two and three in their first
five, and Aaron Donald's like, "Eh, maybe I won't come back," 'cause the
team's not really that good, that'll be a delightful, delightful start.
But that's five weeks into the season.
We got about five more weeks, four more weeks of Hard
Knocks, so we'll be back, Bran.
This is fun.

Brandan (33:57):
Yep.
All right.
Thanks again to everybody for tuning in, and I think with that-

Clinton (34:00):
There's only one thing left to say

… Brandan (34:02):
go Hawks.

Clinton (34:03):
Go Hawks.
