(00:10):
This is the Sea Hawkers Podcast.
I'm your host, Brandan Schulze, andI am joined by my good buddy Adam
Emmert as we are live followingour Seahawks' 13-10 victory over
the New England Patriots, buddy.
Oh, and it feels so good.
This is, the 11th win in a row,I believe, and our second consecutive
(00:33):
win in a row against the dirtyPatriots, and it was a lot of fun.
If you can't tell, we left it all out onthe field with our voices, as did
all the other 12s here in the home opener.
What a cool experience, man, beingthere as they unveil the banner.
They have the flyover with the F-15s.
that made me giddy like a little kid.
It was so much fun.
(00:53):
they had the really touchingtribute to, the, the
the Paul Allen family- Yeah
and Jody Allen.
So I know, like, a lot of peopleare wondering, or interested in
maybe Jody Allen raising the flag.
that didn't happen, but they didthis really cool tribute to, to both
yeah, both, all, all the Allen family.
(01:15):
Paul and Jody, yeah.
Paul and Jody, and, and then RichardSherman- Yep… raised the 12 flag.
Yep, Sherman raised the 12 flag.
It was electric, and I think from someof the takeaways from the game, Brandon
I kinda wanna just start with, the12s themselves because I really felt
like they brought their A game tonight.
I don't know what they said on thetelecast or anything like that, but
(01:36):
when it felt like that the team reallyneeded the energy and really needed the
pick-me-up, like, the crowd was therefor them, and they were gangbusters.
the…
I, I would say that there was a lotof confusion early on, especially when
we lost Sam Darnold after the veryfirst drive, and then you see Drew Lock
come out there for the second drive.
(01:58):
And, and so if there's anythingwith the crowd, it was, a
little bit of confusion early on.
Yeah, the confusion was real, because the hit that Sam took didn't
look like one of those where you'd beprimarily worried about his health.
And, you know, the hipinjury happened, and it looked
like it could be a scary one.
It sounded like it could be a scaryone, but some initial news from Mike
(02:19):
Macdonald in his press conferencesaying that it was not fractured.
they still have an MRI to come, it sounds like maybe tomorrow.
But, good news initially, which was nice to see.
But as Sam went down,Drew Lock stepped up.
Yeah.
And as Mike said, it, it was positivenews, but, we still don't know
how long it could potentially be.
(02:39):
It's just if it were to bea fractured hip, then that
would be, really bad news.
So we've got Ryan911 coming in, our liveexecutive producer with a 1999 super chat.
So proud of Drew.
He played fantastic tonight.
Really happy the way Fleury workedhim in, before he really seemed
to unleash him in the fourth.
(02:59):
Great team win.
Go Hawks.
Yeah, it…
With regard to Drew, lookingat a stat line too, he finishes
the day 16 of 22, 187 yards.
He has the one touchdownto JSN, and it, it's…
For, for Drew, a- and to get the13-10 win, gosh, the stat
line could have been a lot better.
(03:21):
but they end up set- settlingfor a couple field goals, which
maybe wasn't all bad becausenow we get to realize that maybe we
do have Even Year Myers after all.
Yeah.
And one of the interesting things asthey were kind of doing the Paul Allen
tribute and some of the other thingsthat, Myers was out there practicing.
And, I didn't pay attention to a lotof the tributes and all of that stuff.
(03:43):
I was just eagle-eyed on Myers.
And, he went three for three fromabout 50 yards, pregame, and I
was like, "Okay, maybe it'll be good."
And makes his two kicks and his extrapoint in, so that alleviates some worries.
I, I do wanna go back to, Lock andFleury for a little bit here for- Sure
a quick second.
So, you know- Brian Fleury is oneof the biggest question marks about
(04:05):
this team coming into this year justbecause he's new at doing the job.
And it's amazing to see a guy go throughthe kind of adversity that he had to
g- go through after the first drivewhen he loses his starting quarterback
but seemed to stick to the game plan.
Had a nice flow I felt like overall,a nice balance, as a whole.
And, I think that's an impressivefirst outing for a first-time OC
(04:27):
a first-time play caller when youlose your starting quarterback.
Yeah, so are you thinking that whenyou say sticking to the game plan
do you think the game plan was to gorelatively light in terms of running
the ball with Jadarian Price?
'Cause he finishes theday 10 carries, 52 yards.
He was the leading rusher for bothteams even though Stevenson carried
(04:49):
it I think 18 times for the Patriots.
but Price finishes with 52,Holani has 29, and really it, it
kind of felt, like a throwbackto last year in the first half of the
season with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, eightcatches, 122 yards and a touchdown.
Jaxon's ready to go.
Yes.
He very much was ready to go.
But, you know, as you kinda look atthe breakdown there, from the, from
(05:12):
the backs, you had 20 total carries.
and then you had 24 totalpass attempts between Drew
Lock and, Sam Darnold.
So honestly, that's a fairlynice balanced recipe there
where I thought that was great.
And then to kinda go to Price- Man, Pricewas impressive right out of the gate.
First run out of the gate, makes a greatcut, just streaks up the middle, and you
(05:37):
can see the things that you saw on tapeat Notre Dame really start to pop off the
screen here as he makes his pro debut.
Yeah, Lisa in chat, @WhistleJacketssaying, "Talk about how Price looks.
He has a knack for getting a fewmore yards than he should be.
That stuff adds up."
And I, I re- That sure does.
… I remember that, there was, there was one play where Price
(05:59):
was running to the outside and Adamwas like, "Oh, there's nothing there."
And then he got, what, like five, six yards.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And, yeah, Gary made fun of me.
That was deserved.
It was a good time.
but I think that was one of thethings that shocked me a little bit about
watching Price in this game, is the secondgear and able to capture the edge, even
in situations where maybe you didn't thinkthat there was a lot there for most backs.
(06:23):
And, I see Drew in chat, beingtalked about there by Everett Weber.
going back to him, I thinkthe biggest part of the stat line
that, you know, we mentioned the,the completions, you mentioned
the yards, the one touchdown.
But zero turnovers.
The fact that he came in and yousaw the guy who was on the other
(06:43):
side of the field, who was therunner-up for MVP last year in Drake
Maye, he throws three interceptions.
Drew Lock, after playing a littlebit in the preseason, not expecting
to play in this game, comes in,clean game, zero interceptions.
And gosh, he, he…
Shoot, he almost r- ran itin for another touchdown-
Yeah… down near the goal line.
(07:04):
Showed off his wheels, yeah.
Yeah, showed off his wheels a little bit.
And yeah, if he would've beenable to punch that in, that
would've been, a lot less, puckery at the end of the game.
Yeah.
Yep.
Yeah, for sure.
he had a couple big boythrows throughout that game, too.
The one to Kupp where he kindalike one handle, hands it and
bobbles it and brings it in.
That was a beautiful ball from Drew Lock.
He had another one on, like, an out route, to the one sideline where he had
(07:29):
pressure and he, he really didn't,get his feet around, but was able to kinda
throw it off the back foot and just kindado the flick and, get it out there.
I thought that was pretty impressive.
And Drew really steadied the ship.
And I think if you're a backupquarterback- I think it would be
unbelievably unexpected to, afterone season in game one, you know
(07:50):
first game of the season, in firstdrive, and then have to come in.
Like, I'm not sure anybody would becompletely mentally prepared for that.
Like, you just wouldn'tthink that that would happen.
No, it does feel like…
Yeah.
Gosh, at half ti- I don't knowwhen the best time to come
in is, but maybe halftime.
Weatherfork in chat mentioningthat Gonzo dropped a gif, gift.
I, I don't know.
(08:11):
It, it would've been a tough catch, for the corner, but it did
feel like as a Patriots fan, you'dprobably say, "Oh, well he should've
come up with th- with that."
Maybe not as bad as the RomeoDoubs drop, but he definitely
should've come up with it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No, that one amused me to a,a great deal because, the
fanfare around AJ Brown deserved.
You know, he's a top flight receiver, and then they bring in- There's a
(08:32):
lot of hype around Doubs… andthey bring in Doubs, and
like, the- everyone's like, "Oh mygosh, they got a legit number two."
I was like, "Well, that's cute.
That's a delightfully average receiver,"and he showed it on that play.
Yeah.
you think the Packers are giving up…
Like, they have delightfully averagerec- receiving core, too.
Right.
And, so yeah, to, to be hypingup Doubs seemed weird to me.
Yeah, for sure.
(08:53):
But, you know, offense, you know, answered a few questions, in
today's game, and we got to see some ofthat, Fleury philosophy out there.
A lot more fullback maybe than Ithought with Brady Russell being the
featured fullback, and actually Ithought he acquitted himself quite well.
Yeah.
Got to see some niceplays from Brady Russell.
y- yeah, I, I'm kind ofwith, the chat there, really.
(09:14):
It does feel like Drew Lock.
But, also, I mean, Jaxon Smith-Njigba,man, that, that dude is- There's a
reason he's the offensive player of theyear… he might, if, if he is able to
do what he did again, he might be MVP thisyear, if he's able to put together that
kind of, you know, back-to-back seasons.
But, I don't knowif I want to see that.
I want to see more Jadarian Price.
(09:35):
Why…
I, I felt like Price left, like- When, when the play, w- you talk about Fleury.
Yeah.
And for, Sam to go out, I thoughtwe would see a lot more in the run game.
And so, yeah, that, that part surprisedme about Fleury, that you got Price
(09:56):
there, he ha- we hadn't seen him muchin the preseason, and even Holani
the, the two backs together tallied18 carries, and when you're going
to your backup quarterback, that, that part surprised me a little bit.
Yeah, and I think it just showed, like, Brian Fleury keeping his cool
when he's faced early adversity.
Mm-hmm.
Like, again, on his firstseries ever as a play caller
(10:19):
and I think that is impressive.
One of the things about the offense-Talk about ke- him keeping his
cool- Yeah… fourth and one.
Yeah.
Yeah, just the, just barnyard it.
And, and we're not, we're,we're not barnyarding it, no.
We're throwing a touchdown, throwing it to JSN and he's
running it in for a touchdown.
Yeah, yeah, that was the other one thatgot me-… throughout the game.
I was like, "Oh, good, we're throwingit," as, we, he drops back to
(10:40):
pass, but, beautifully designedplay and, and Drew really did
you know, find JSN in a nice spot.
And then the thing is, isthat for most receivers in the
league, that's not a touchdown.
JSN had an incredible run afterthe catch and really made a couple
dudes miss and, you know, showedhis kind of quintessential, like
(11:01):
smooth wiggle that nobody canseem to figure out, gets in for the
touchdown, and that was pretty sweet.
We've got the survey up on screen, asking folks- Ooh, this is
fancy… who the man of the match is.
Yeah.
And really, I, I would havea hard time picking from…
A- again, this is similar to theSuper Bowl, where we've spent a lot
(11:21):
of time talking about the offense, but the defense won this game.
Right.
So there'd be two people that I wouldnominate for that, and that would
either be Uchenna Nwosu or Julian Love.
Like- Oh… I felt like both thosedudes played a whale of a game.
I mean, Nwosu was just- destroyingthe Patriots single-handedly
(11:41):
on a couple plays there.
And I thought he had a super strong game.
I thought Julian Lovehad a nice game, too.
He had a lot of nice tacklesaround the line of scrimmage.
He had one of the interceptions wherehe baited the [bleep] out of Drake Maye-
which was really fun to watch.
And, those two guys were amazing.
But to touch on one last thing aboutthe offense, I think one of the things
that was obvious is that with thestarters not having a lot of time in
(12:03):
the pre-season, there was some rust.
It wasn't exactly great.
The, the penaltieswere, a little much.
Penalties were a little much.
I, I- I- if they were all legit, and I'mstill not convinced… the thing that I
wanted to see the pre- the, the startersin pre-season, and I feel like there's
gonna be a lot of takes out there nowof, okay, if starters would've played in
(12:27):
the pre-season, would an injury like thathave happened to Sam Darnold so soon?
And I feel like i- it's, it's probablyhowever you feel about starters
playing in the pre-season is, isgoing to influence your take on that.
Yeah.
Because you're gonna say, "Well, aninjury like that could've happened
to Sam in the pre-season," and thenwe would be as fans saying, "Why
(12:48):
did you play him in the pre-season?"
Exactly.
It's damned if you do,damned if you don't.
And, yeah, he could've just aseasily been tackled like that in
the, his first series in the secondpre-season game, and then we're all
wondering, was that the right decision?
But at the end of the day, it soundslike, we may have positive news
on that, and that's pretty sweet.
But yeah, turning to the defense, becausethe defense is really what won the day
(13:14):
and, kind of a repeat of the SuperBowl in some ways, with their, you
know, really dominant performance asthe Patriots scored all of their points
more or less off of penalties, right?
Because you have the roughingof the kicker penalty that
gets them into field goal range.
Yeah.
And they score the touchdown on the PI onJosh Jobe after the trickery flea flicker.
(13:34):
That's what Josh McDaniels had to do.
He had to reach in for a flea flickerto finally get anything against
Mike, Mike Macdonald's defense.
Yeah, and that ended up taking advantageof the secondary that I know, like
a lot of us fans were worried about.
But gosh, we saw some niceplays from Rodney Thomas.
We saw Nehemiah Pritchettwith the interception.
(13:55):
and then kind of the cool full circlemoment of the game, Josh Jobe has the, the
the penalty that- Yeah… then leadsto the touchdown, and then, oh, he catches
the, the- The game sealing interception.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, and, what abeautiful catch, too.
And, I think Clinton had pointedout to us, on the drive back that
(14:19):
even JSN had some praise for-… JoshJobe in his way, that he was able to go up
like a receiver and then do a little tap, tap, taparoo to, to get the touchdown.
I was trying to celebrate witheverybody around me, and everybody was
wanting to wait for the, the replay.
And I, I mean, I could seeit from where we were that he
clearly got his feet in bounds.
(14:39):
Yeah, yeah.
Well, th- This is the hardest partabout this show tonight, boys and
girls, is that we, we were sittingdown in the, south end zone.
The majority of the game-… wasplayed in the north side of the
field, so it was all very far away.
so, for me, it was difficult totell, and maybe the rest of us wanted
to take a Cooper Kupp mentality likein the Super Bowl where he's like
"I ain't celebrating [bleep] till we getto-"… all the triple zeros," you know?
(15:00):
Yeah.
Well, I was, I was ready tocelebrate because I wanted it
to be over because that fourthquarter, was one of the toughest
stretches as a fan, like, of- Whew
bringing it at a game.
And so again, when you are giving creditto all of the fans who were there, it
it is well deserved because- Yeah… ifthey're anything like the people in
our section, it was, it was a lot.
(15:22):
It was a lot.
And, it did feel very loud.
you could see the defensereally feed off of that.
And this is very much a MikeMacdonald type of game, right?
Like, "We are gonna choke you outdefensively, make enough plays
offensively, and come away withyet another win" that people will
say is either boring or fluky orthis, that or the other thing.
I, I do have a feeling that thenarrative after this game is
(15:45):
that w- it's boring and sloppy.
It's not gonna be, oh, you know, how the Seahawks stepped up and, and
overcame adversity in a situationwhere they lost their quarterback.
No, it's…
They're gonna say it's,it was sloppy and boring.
Yeah.
what's wrong with Drake Maye?
Is he a bust now?
Like, da, da, da, da, da.
And it's all gonna be about thePatriots, no doubt about it, and A.J.
(16:06):
Brown's injury.
Although this really wasthe type of game for…
I, I think Drake Maye- the criticism aroundhim is going to be deserved because this
was a game he should've been able to- Yeah… to pull out because he had the, he had
the ball with, in the final drive.
He conver- convertedmultiple fourth downs.
(16:27):
And then, I thought they were settingup to go for a field goal because they
were really draining a lot of clock.
Yeah.
Using timeouts.
Yeah.
And it seemed like they weresetting it up To just let it play
out, kick the field goal, go intoovertime, but then they tested Jobe.
Yeah.
And, they paid theprice, no doubt about it.
(16:48):
Yeah, it'll be interesting to see kindof what people have to say about Drake
after this game, 'cause this was reallywinnable for a guy who was in the MVP
conversation after being, like, themost memorable, schedule merchant in
the history of the league, playing theweakest schedule in what, like, I don't
know, since the Kennedy administration?
Like, absolutely, crazy.
And so yeah, when he actually goesup against a generational defense
(17:11):
like this, he looks very mortal.
Yeah.
Well, and so any- while there shouldbe some criticism because he had the
opportunity, yeah, he, he was going upagainst, again, the Seahawks defense.
And, for them to play as well asthey did with the questions around
the secondary, Nick Emmanwori not outthere, it, I, I'm very happy
(17:33):
the way things turned out with thedefense because yes, I was worried.
And I think one of the things that'sreally encouraging that we see this
out of this game is without Emmanworiplaying and with Ty Okada injured, you
see Rodney Thomas come in and do his joband be a part of the interception that
Nehemiah Pritchett gets, who he playedoutside the, as the starter as they moved
(17:54):
Spoon inside for the majority of the game.
So you had Jobe and, and Pritchett outside, and, Pritchett had a great game, and
that interception was really impressive.
Thomas kind of tips it up a littlebit, Pritchett tips it up to
himself-… catches the ball, and, has a nice return with it as well.
And I thought Nehemiah had a greatgame, and I think that's something
(18:15):
that will help put to, tobed some of the worries a lot of
people had about the third corneror the opposite outside corner.
Couple folks I wantedto make sure and thank.
We got a super chat rightat the end of the last show.
Oh, it was awesome.
And it was, we'd already hitthe we're done button, so yeah.
So Tim Schmidt came in with $50, and, really wanna thank Tim for that.
(18:39):
Also, we got 1212.12
from James.
That's- That's a lot of numbers in a row.
That feels like it's morethan being 100 there, Scott.
That, that, that's $1,212and 12 cents from James.
Holy crap, dude.
Like,… yeah, that's amazing.
I, I guess I'll have togive him a ride home.
… that, that's pretty impressive.
(18:59):
So big shout-out to our buddy James, man, and, you know, huge supporter of
of the show and a really good friend.
And, just wanna thank allof you guys that came out and
hung out with us, whether it wasthe night before or at the game.
It was a lot of fun.
Yeah, we had a really cool groupthat joined us up there in section
325, and yes, we were all cheeringour brains out throughout the game.
(19:22):
Mike W.
coming in saying, "I just tunedin about five minutes ago.
Not sure if you guys updatedon the Sam situation.
I just read that he's negative on afracture, yes, but other results
are inconclusive, so MRI tomorrow."
I think i- what, even what the, with whatthe MRI says I s- I think we're going to
be rolling with Drew Lock for at leastthe next couple weeks Couple weeks.
(19:45):
Yeah.
Next couple weeks.
if we can kind ofkeep it in that lane.
And that's not, that's me notknowing anything about doctoring.
Yeah.
I'm just guessing, but- I don't know.
We're not even at a Holiday Inn.
We're at an Airbnb… like, if it,if it was that serious that they were-
Yeah… worried that it might be broken,it does seem like a multiple week thing.
Right.
So it doesn't soundlike it was dislocated.
The big concern would be thatthen it would be a break when we
(20:07):
saw kind of the tweet from Dr.
Chao, who does a lot of the kindof injury reporting on Twitter.
And to dodge that at least is a huge deal.
Now we'll get the results from the MRI.
I'm sure you're gonna see some thingsin there, but hopefully, hopefully
it's gonna be something that, isn't gonna be too prolonged.
No.
And, maybe, maybe the scheduleworks out favorably for us, right?
(20:31):
These next couple of weeks.
Yeah.
'Cause, we do havethe, Cardinals- Who?
… coming up next.
Uh-huh.
And then on the ro- but bothtwo road games, so on the
road against the Cardinals.
Then on the road- Yeah, we're off andon the road… against the Commanders.
I know them.
Barely, though.
They're, they're not quite awho because of Jayden Daniels.
And then back home against theChargers to kick off October.
(20:52):
And that's gonna be a game.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, for sure.
But, I can't wait to go back and watchthe TV copy because once again, everything
that we saw was, like, tiny people at al- a large distance Far away at one end.
Yeah.
And, but as a whole, a superexciting win for the Seahawks as
they begin to run it forward andwe start our season undefeated.
(21:12):
I'm pretty fired up for that.
Fired up for that.
If you wanna become a memberof the Flock, getintheflock.com
and, you can join in there.
Also, it looks like we got one more superchat, before we get on out of here.
Ooh.
Yeah, Patrick coming in.
"Paul Lock will lead us.
Significantly, he mentionedjust relying on our defense and
(21:33):
protecting the ball headed forward."
Yeah.
And for somebody like Drew Lock, who when he came into the league-
Oh, it, it's, yeah, a ti- It-… autocorrect got him.
Yeah, either autocorrect gothim or, you know, a funny
joke that I don't quite get-
because I'm stupid.
But, at the end of the day, Ithink Drew got a front row seat to what
(21:55):
it means to run a team like this whenyou're surrounded by this sort of talent
with this kind of coach, and understandingthat you just gotta not screw it up.
And watching Sam Darnold kind of runthat throughout the year, I think that
was good for somebody like Drew, whohad the mentality, especially when
he was back with the Broncos, of thatkind of gunslinger type because he has
(22:16):
such a big arm and he has such a quickrelease and he really spins it well.
I like to see that that'ssomething that's rubbed off on him.
All right.
We got, Zippy Pinhead fan.
"I live in Arizona and I'mplanning to be at the game."
Hell yeah.
First live game since2014 NFC championship.
Have a great time at the game.
(22:37):
We're gonna be previewing thatmatch up coming up this week.
And, before we get…
I mean, we got some recapsto do this week, too.
Yeah.
So make sure you're subscribed to theshow wherever you listen, whether it's
on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts.
like us there, follow us there.
And, appreciate everybodytuning in for the show tonight.
Absolutely.
We'll be back to our regular scheduleof five shows in between games.
(23:00):
And, next up will be,three and three out with, with
Clinton, and, we're lookingforward to getting after that.
this is our live recap here.
We'll do our flagship as well.
We've got What If with Phil, and thenwe'll do news and notes again as we
get closer to playing that…
Which team was it again?
I, I don't even remember.
I forgot about- Yeah, some other one.
(23:20):
I don't know.
Deserty one.
The bo- the most important thing, we'restarting off the season one and O.
We go back to back against thestupid Patriots to get the 13 and
0 victory, and we are moving on toweek number two, whoever we play.
That's right.
And I'm Gas, so with that- There's onlyone thing left to say… go Hawks.
Go Hawks.
