Brandan (00:10):
Hello, and welcome to the Sea Hawkers Podcast.
I'm your host Brandan Schulze, and tonight I am joined by
my good buddy Clinton Bonner.
And we've got people in the chatjoining us live for the post game.
Ryan911 saying, "MOBis good all the time."
And, it is all thetime that the MOB is good.

(00:30):
Clinton?

Clinton (00:31):
It is.
it just turns out that sometimesyour third and fourth stringers
aren't, exactly great, and thatwasn't the most, you know, the most
exciting Seahawks football game.
But that's okay, because it's game oneof the pre-season, it's August 15th.
And Brandan, when the closer tostarters were in, we looked okay.
We looked darn good when thecloser to starters were in.

(00:52):
We were up 7-0 early in fact, Brandan.

Brandan (00:54):
Yes, up 7-0 early, and then I tuned out.
So- … we'll just, we'lljust pretend that's all we saw.
But, we also have a specialguest joining us tonight.
It is Mookie Alexander of Field Gulls.
Nice.
It's been a while, Mookie.
Welcome back to the show.

Mookie (01:09):
Yeah, it's good to be on.
it's great to have Seahawksfootball back, no matter how
tedious a watch that was.
but it just means that y-y- you do another check mark.
Okay, that's one down, two to go,roster cuts, and then boom, Wednesday,
September 9th, the real thing happens.
I, I, I can assure you that, thedudes who are out there playing,
about 80 to 90% of them will not be evenon the roster come, come week one.

Brandan (01:34):
Yeah, especially after half time.
You get to watch it andyou're going, "Oh, man.
Just, our defense is getting run over."
And then you realize- Yeah … okay, wella lot of these guys aren't gonna be on the
Seahawks defense when, when we kickit off against the Patriots for week one.
And really, I think thestory of the game, Clinton- Hmm.
You have one … was penalties.

Clinton (01:54):
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.

Brandan (01:56):
Because I, I, I did the Control + F on my play-by-play sheet here.
27 called penalties.
Wow.
Oof.
and, you know, some ofthose were declined obviously,
but 27 called penalties betweenthe Cowboys and Seahawks.
So a, a sloppy game, Mookie,on both sides of the ball.

Mookie (02:14):
Yeah, very sloppy.
a- and in certain areas it,it, it's sloppy at a, to a point
where you go, "That person isprobably not making the roster."
Hmm.
And I'm talking about somebodylike Logan Brown, who I think
had four penalties tonight.

Clinton (02:27):
Woof.

Mookie (02:27):
And, and I mean, when I was at camp last week, he
had two false starts even at the,the one practice I saw at VMAC.
Oof.
so I think that's…
And they were both false starts.
So that's, that was, that'sbeen an issue for him.
Even though he looked better thanAmari Kight from the camps that I saw,
that's not saying a whole lot whenyou consider the performances of the
second and third string offensive line.

(02:48):
just some undisciplinedpenalties on the defensive side
of the ball in the secondary.
Shemar Jean-Charles I, I think willmake it a very easy decision as far as who
gets let go when Terrion Arnold get signed.
a- and really, like Jean-Charles wasalways gonna be a long shot to make the
roster, but he made sure that, thatlong shot disappeared, lickety split.
So- I, I, I think that's, ofcourse, game result doesn't matter.

(03:11):
There's no game planor anything like that.
I don't think Macdonald's gonna be happywith the ugliness and the disjointed
nature of the, of this particular game.
because we saw, wewere there last preseason.
We, we watched all the gamesand, and for the most part they
were a lot cleaner than this.
Mm-hmm.
So-

Brandan (03:27):
Yeah
…Mookie: no reason to panic, but it does put into perspective the gap you
see between the top guys, the oneswho are gonna be playing on Sundays
every week, and then the ones whoare just trying to make the roster.
Okay, Clinton, but here's the thing.
Yeah.
I, I can handle some false startpenalties, like we get those every
game, some defensive holding orsome hands to the face, that's fine.
We had dudes at wide receiver justlining up into the neutral zone and,

(03:51):
and wide receivers false starting and,and it's those ones, it's like,
tho- Yes, it's pre-season, but I don'teven wanna see those in the pre-season

Clinton (04:01):
There was one on Cody White too, which, which I, I
don't think he actually moved.
He certainly didn't seemlike he thought he moved.
Coming back to the sideline, they called it on him.

Brandan (04:08):
Well, Cody White also thought he caught one of
those passes that he dropped.

Clinton (04:11):
Yes, he did.
I say, look, you gotta, you gotta try, right?
But, but look, the, thefirst drive, it, there was…
It looked, it looked pretty clean.
and I'm not gonna sit here and belike, "Oh, Drew Lock looked good," 'cause
it doesn't really matter, but Drew Lockdid Drew Lock things in the first drive.
But the first drive also gaveyou Holani with a couple of nice
runs, getting to the edges, nice, nice blocks on the interior.

(04:33):
Then there was a really nice play toArroyo on that first drive, where it
was a little play action to Holani, quick hit over the middle to, to
Arroyo, it, you know, really in stride.
And you start to get the sense of whatthe Fleury offense wants to go do.
So while the totality was very sloppyand messy, and then once we got
into the third and fourth quarter,we really were getting run over.

(04:56):
You know, we just…
That, that part's ugly, ugly, and not fun.
I really do, really would like to focusmore on the first part of what we saw
there, and, that looked pretty smooth.
So from a Fleury perspective, guys, I could take a little bit
of, a little bit out of thisand be like, "Okay, I think I see
what Fleury was attempting to do."
And this, this is game one, training wheels still on,

(05:17):
not giving away everything.
But Brandan, that partlooked pretty good to me.
7-nothing early.
I like that.

Brandan (05:23):
Yeah, let's go back to the first drive here in a second.
And, we've got Ryan911 comingin with a super chat of 9.99.

Clinton (05:30):
Nice.

Brandan (05:31):
Fun to watch Seahawks football again.
Very fun and appreciate you executiveproducer-ing, the show, Ryan.
Carly Perkins also in at 4.99.
I didn't catch most of thegame, but Spoon got paid.
So glad we could take- True … careof my boy, and we're one step
closer to real football again.
We're gonna get totalking to some Spoon too.
But, going to this first drive,Mookie, how, how did you feel about it?

(05:53):
Because, y- the, the last throw, the,the touchdown pass by Lock, great throw.
Oh, yeah.
you referenced the, the pass toArroyo that was kind of set up with…
You saw a couple similar guard pullingtype plays that were run plays, and
then they, they build off of thatand run that same type of guard pull-

(06:14):
Yeah … but then it's the pass to Arroyo.
so, but really when you looktoo at the, at, at, at the box score,
Drew Lock nine of 13, 40 yards, Mookie.
That's, a little over…
or what?
Three yards per attempt.
so maybe, maybenot a good day overall.
But we got to see a n- acouple nice throws by Lock.

Mookie (06:35):
Yeah, they were pretty much all on the first drive because I, I
would say after that he was not sharp.
He, I think he was a littleworse than the nine of 13.
what indicates the 40 yardsdefinitely justified, given
some of the misses he had.
He had a bad miss to Bobo over themiddle, and then he overshot a wide
open Montorie Foster, and I thinkthat would've been a big play.
That was early in the third quarter.
But that touchdown toFoster was a nice throw.

Brandan (06:56):
Yeah.

Mookie (06:56):
And it was also a great play by Foster because he's barely
out of his break running a little postthere and then coming back, and by
the time he has to turn around, theball's on him and he's able to get it.
And I know Foster had a drop, and thenI think he had a penalty also, but
who didn't really in the second half.
But, if the Seahawks are gonna stashsix receivers, if they're gonna roster
six guys, and we already know who thetop five are I think Montorie Foster

(07:20):
might be in that mix with Cody White.
I'd say Ricky White is now belowFoster because you notice Foster
was out there before Ricky was.

Brandan (07:27):
Right.

Mookie (07:27):
And Foster, you don't…
I, I'm kind of wondering, are theywilling to expose him to waivers?
Because one thing that we always freakout about every year is, "Oh man, that
guy's gonna get claimed, this guy's gonnaget claimed," and very, very few players
actually get claimed during cut down day.

Brandan (07:42):
Right.

Mookie (07:43):
The one thing that kind of complicates that for the Seahawks
is that they've got a, a guy inMinnesota named Nolan Teasley who might be
watching whatever the Seahawks are doing.
So- Mm … you've got Minnesota, yougot Carolina, maybe you have Las Vegas,
so those would be three teams you couldthink of who could possibly look to
get in on some, some Seahawks talent.
but- And the Niners

Brandan (08:00):
maybe with

Mookie (08:01):
the wide receiver … yeah, it, it's possible.
Yeah, it, it is verypossible that happens.
But, like, if Foster doesn't make theteam, I think he, and he clears waivers
immediately to the practice squad.
Alternatively, he makes the roster, you waive Cody White, Cody White
clears waivers all the time, and hegoes to the practice squad, and that
might be what they're willing to dojust to have a young guy on the team.

(08:22):
And I'm happy for Foster given hegoes from substitute teacher to, to
maybe a, a- an NFL week one player.
We'll see how it goes.

Brandan (08:29):
I hate how they put in those stories too, 'cause then
you're like, "Oh, I, I definitelyhave to root for, for the guy."
And, and Daniel Smith in chatsaying, yes, Raiders would claim him.
Montorie Foster finishes thenight five catches, 36 yards.
right behind him, JakeBobo, three catches, 13 yards.
And then, yardage wise, the only guythat, would follow him up i- Velus

(08:52):
Jones had two catches for negative five.
So maybe that's why, Drew Lock'shurting a little bit there too.
And Elijah Arroyo with onecatch for, 12 yards.
Looking at the quarterbacks, JalenMilroe, five of eight, 36 yards and,…
But he had some rushing stats.
He had five carries on 36 yards.
So, Clinton- Yes … we'll go to you in a second.

(09:14):
check out Yokai Hawkhere with the, 1707 yen.
Appreciate that Yokai Hawk.
Nice.
"Is there any way we can assess Fleury'splay calling regardless of the execution?"
So let's go there.
though execution is kindof his responsibility too.
I, Clinton, it, it seems to methat I really go more off of that
first drive because those are thescripted plays, and then I don't know

(09:39):
if there's much we can take away fromit too because part of it was offensive
line, part of it was penalties.

Clinton (09:46):
Yeah.

Brandan (09:46):
And part of it too, y- we're going for it on fourth down in situations
that maybe we wouldn't necessarily begoing for it on fourth down if, you
know, y- we, we got a turnover insidethe, what, five yard line- Mm-hmm … and
just run three straight times to the, well, twice to the outside, one up
the middle that gets stuffed, and thenthey go for it on fourth down again.

(10:09):
Would that series be called a littlebit differently, late in the game?
That's tough to say, but w- whatdo you take away play calling-wise?

Clinton (10:17):
So I do think your points are good there, first and foremost.
You know, Myers misses a chip shot, doesn't typically do that, right?
So that's points off the board.
And then we're going stuff onfourth and four, and things
of that nature, which, you know, during the season, you're just not
typically doing that, which is fine.
You- you trot Myers out there.
Last year he broke LT's recordfor most points ever scored,

(10:38):
and you just go get your points.
the first two drives, the,the first time Milroe was in,
that was a promising drive too.
Seattle was so good last year thatwhen they did have the occasional
five-yard penalty, they were also reallyclean last year a lot, but they were
very good last year that they didn'tallow, like, a five-yard penalty to

(10:59):
just automatically derail a drive.
A couple of years ago, maybe yearone Mike Macdonald, and certainly the
end of the Pete Carroll era, driveswould get derailed all the time
with, like, a little false start.
Like, okay, well, they're justmight- might as well not play,
might as well punt on second down.
That, that kind of happened today wherethe, the start of some of the other
drives were promising, and then there'sa negative play, and they just couldn't,

(11:21):
couldn't get out of that, their own way.
That's okay.
It's, they will work those kinks out.
I think the early stuff that wasrunning the football looked promising,
and we know, like, we know…
But look, Sam's gonna…
I think Sam's in line for aquality year, maybe in a, maybe
even a very, very good year.
We'll see.
of course he's get- he's gettingthe glow up with the 21st, ranking

(11:43):
at NFL 100, and of course what'shappening on, on, Hard Knocks.
But this team's gonna run the football.
So I think it was promising early there, and some of the, some of the backup,
guards and tackles on the firstcouple of drives looked pretty good.
You know, un- until it didn't.
So those are the things that I couldtake away and say, "Hey, early in
the game we looked pretty competent."

(12:04):
One thing I'll…
Before I'll pass to Mookie in a sec, butI thought Milroe was okay, and where I, I
realized Drew Lock's line of nine of 13,not that many yards, but he did have that
big pass down the sideline that drew a PI.
I think that was Foster also.
I, I believe that was also Fosterwho gets held for a big PI play,
so doesn't count in the stat line, but, you know, the chunk is a chunk.

(12:28):
Milroe to me s- takes three sacks, still had a, had a fumble himself that
he recovered Hungry Hungry Hippo style.
But he still seemed a little rushed to me.
But he also, Mookie, I'm not sureif you could pick apart anything from
Milroe besides a little rushed, lookedpretty good, but seemed to also still
wanna kinda go run the football a bit morethan maybe es- escape and make a play.

(12:51):
Or did he just not have enough time?
What did you see, Mookie?

Mookie (12:55):
well first thing, the, the long throw that drew the
PI was to Cody White, I believe.
Cody,

Clinton (12:59):
okay, cool.

Mookie (13:00):
I think there was a, the throw before that Bobo
got blatantly interfered withand still hung on for the catch.
Yeah.
But that was a veryrisky throw from Lock.
I thought Milroe wasfine the first drive.
of course, he wasable to use his legs.
That little improvised throw to, to, to Bobo to complete a
fourth down, only to be nullifiedby the Amari Kight holding penalty.
Right.
Yeah.
it didn't take awayfrom how good the play was.

(13:21):
So we, we can see him be creative there.
when it was a, a, a quick pass, I,I think he was accurate, whether it was
that throw to Kallerup or the throwover the middle to Bobo on a third down.
So I mean, there were some good thingsas far as Milroe's quick decision-making,
but once it became, like, under center, deep drop type of, concepts, I-
it felt like he was kind of betwixt andbetween as far as, should I run now?

(13:44):
Because that was kind of the thinglast year, is like as soon as the
first read's not open, he's gonna bail.

Clinton (13:48):
Mm.

Mookie (13:48):
And you don't wanna be doing that in the long term w-
if you wanna be a viable startingquarterback in this league.
So I think there were actuallysome opportunities Milroe could
have taken off sooner, and heended up just getting sacked.
Pass pro was very poor,-Yes … from the second and third
team, especially from the tackles.
Like Brown and Kight and Hart, those three were brutal.

(14:10):
And then Beau Stephens had a couple of…
He had some good moments m- mainlyin the run blocking, but, in
pass pro I don't think he hold, heldup, all, all that consistently.
So I don't think it was a great nightfor Milroe, all, all in all, but,
you know, we'll, we'll see howit goes over the next couple weeks.
I think it's just a baby steps thing, that the good news is we are seeing
him at least run with the second teamoffense, and we are seeing him at least

(14:33):
in there with Bobo and Elijah Arroyo andhanding the ball off to George Holani.
So th- you know, everybody I justmentioned, now, just now, those
guys are gonna be on the roster.
Mm-hmm.
So we'll see how it goesnext week and the week after.
Yokai, Yokai Hawk asked, "Wasit Olu for the Milroe fumble?"
I haven't gone back to look at that play.
if that wa- Yeah, that

Brandan (14:52):
wa- I think that was his very first snap under center, and- Yes
and Milroe didn't have a ton of snapsunder center I think when they went,…
And most of the otherones were run plays, so.

Mookie (15:01):
Yeah.
So, but, you know, i- if, as far asMilroe just having this amazing preseason
out of the gate, I think maybe that'swhat fans were kinda hoping for.
That he was able to just spinit, throw some deep shots, be
aggressive, but, the, thepreseason is still young, still young.
Mm-hmm.
We got two other games to go.

Clinton (15:16):
Yeah.
And, and one quick thing too is I, I dowanna say for folks who might be thinking
that I'm coming down a little hard on, onMilroe too, it's like I think he played
markedly better than last year too.
Like, there was, therewas sincere improvement.
There was just still a little bit of a,a little bit left on the bone there like
you were pointing out, there, Mookie.

Brandan (15:35):
We've got BMW22 ounce in chat saying, "You guys are awesome.
Thanks for all the content.
So happy it's Seahawk season again.
Looking forward to anothergreat year with the Seahawks."
Oh, yeah.
for the record, Adam is awesome.
appreciate that.
And the 9.99
Super Chat, BMW22.

Clinton (15:51):
Thank you.
Awesome.

Brandan (15:52):
I I see people, putting in chat, all the places
that, is hiring for Milroe.
I, I don't know why you would giveup on, on Jalen Milroe a third
round pick, in a, in a…
after the first game andthe second preseason.
I, I think it's a little bitearly to be doing that, Mookie,
despite how, you know, may…
It wasn't great, but, I, Ididn't think it was terrible either.

Mookie (16:16):
No, I think some of the sacks might not have been,
great in, in terms of, of Milroebeing able to escape pressure.
Sure.
I will say, when he's running alongthe sideline, I mean, that scramble
he had on third and 11- Mm-hmm.
Right … you can see the speed attimes, and then there are other points…
In o- in other words, like his speedis different depending on which
direction he's actually running, andthat can get him into trouble at times

(16:39):
when he's trying to scramble, like onthat fourth and goal sack at the one.
He's trying to do the Russ spinoramaand, and he's unable to, to get free.
That is definitely a play call thatI'm 100% sure under no circumstances
Brian Fleury would run with SamDonald on the first team offense.
Gotcha.
maybe would even run it withLock in the second team offense.
So we don't really glean toomuch from what Fleury did

(16:59):
as far as play calling here.
especially the deeper intothe game he gets, kind of game
strategy goes out the window.
You're just doing whatever toassess your quarterback, your
line, your receivers, all that.
But, let, let's pump the brakeson Milroe and, and wanting to send
him out to, to FedEx or Arby's andall, and, and all these other lovely
places that definitely need employment.
But I think Milroe is above that.
But, yeah, just, just be patient.

(17:21):
And you know what?
If it doesn't work out, it'snot the end of the world.
He is a third round pick.
He's not a first round pickchallenging for Sam Darnold's job.
The only thing that I was lookingto see with Milroe in preseason
is can he be a guy you canactually have active on game day?
Not immediately replace Drew Lockright now, but is he a guy who for
whom you can actually do a packagefor and, you know, n- not have it

(17:43):
be as catastrophic as last year?
Jury's still out on that front, butif he shows some more development
over the next couple weeks, then maybeyou can go, "All right, we can have
Milroe in the game occasionally,"and he's actually a threat to pass.
If he's not a threat to pass overthese next couple of weeks and the
coaching staff doesn't trust him, then you just keep Milroe inactive
most times like they did last year.

Brandan (18:04):
Well, and I think too, I think we as fans got a little bit hyped up
with some of the reports that we heardthat, oh, it's really Jalen Milroe
and Drew Lock, they're really gonna becompeting for quarterback number two.
And w- when you start to hear that, thenyou're, oh, may- maybe he has developed
to the point to where he's gonna pushDrew Lock, and, and maybe you can move
Drew Lock for picks and, and, andkeep two quarterbacks and still be fine.

(18:29):
But yeah, if we go just the waythat, from what we've seen from
week one, I'm okay with Sam Darnoldhaving two competent backups behind
him and, Drew Lock being the onethat is the next one to be up, Quinn.

Clinton (18:44):
Yeah, no, I am as well.
And I think, I don't know ifthere's much else on the o- on the
offensive side of the ball, guys.
I mean, I just, I just don't think therewas a ton there that you could pick apart.
I think Velus Jones looks…
He's fast, you know, he getsto the outside pretty quickly,
and I think he's, he could be, he could do some good work.
But besides that, again,Holani looked the part to me.

(19:05):
Actually, when Justin Jones, who gotthe one carry at the goal line late
in the game, he looked pretty good.
He didn't quite get into the end zone, and we did not convert on that play.
But- We

Brandan (19:12):
got to see a nice Lampe, fullback

Clinton (19:15):
though.
Yes, yes.
There you go.
That's a good call-out, right?
So just trying to find a couple morebright moments from the, the offense.
Lampe did lay a guy out.
It was that very play.
So you really do wanna see, therunning back able to just punch it in
at that, at that point, but I thinkit was a nice tackle that was made.
But Lampe made, he blew a guy up, so thatwas kinda cool to see as, as, as well.
I don't know if there was otherstuff on the offensive side that

(19:37):
I could dig into with confidenceand say, "Ooh, I s- how about

Brandan (19:40):
Smila?"
I feel like we pretty muchexpired the, the offensive guys.

Clinton (19:42):
Yeah, I guess the only other way we could talk
is, like, offensive linemen.
You know, the, the announcers were, like, glowing up Beau Stephens, and as
soon as they glowed up L- Beau Stephens, hekinda took a, he kinda got off balance,
took a stab, and, and then endedup with a pretty bad holding penalty.
But Mookie, any other dudesacross the offensive line that
you thought, you talked aboutguys that didn't perform too well.

(20:03):
Anybody stand out in the offensive linethat, that played at least pretty good?

Mookie (20:07):
nothing that immediately, jumped out to me.
I will say it's kind of ominous forBryce Cabeldue to, to be that deep- Mm
into the game- Mm-hmm … and thenhe gets in with the third team.
So if that persists over thesenext couple weeks, it's possible
Cabeldue is on the bubble.

Clinton (20:21):
Yeah.

Mookie (20:21):
And I think part of it is because Beau Stephens is somebody who
traded f- up in the draft for, he gaveup some capital next year, to, to
acquire, and Stevens had been with thethird team pretty much all of camp.
but he got in with the, withthe second team, if you will,
very, very early in this game.
And so you got…
I, I will say Christian Haynes, otherthan that one look like bust in,
in pass pro, I don't know if therewas supposed to be a double team

(20:43):
there and he ends up falling down.
Christian Haynes didn't look too bad.

Clinton (20:46):
Yeah, I

Mookie (20:46):
agree.
And really i- if for, for ChristianHaynes, it's just make the roster because
i- these first two seasons had everybodywondering is his goose cooked already.
But it's, by all, all accounts, he's had agood camp, and at least in limited playing
time today, he, he w- other than that onerep- Yeah … he didn't look out of place.
So as long as that persists, thenyou've probably got three guards on

(21:07):
this roster meaning Bradford, Haynesand, and Stevens, and then it's kind
of up in the air for everybody else.
and of course Cabeldue on theleft side, but at right guard
you got those three options.

Brandan (21:17):
Yeah.
Well, and just the factthat Haynes was out there.
He wasn't out there for super longbefore they went ahead and put
Stevens in and gave him some work.
So it kind of told you thatmaybe they didn't need to see a,
a whole lot from Haynes either.
We've got Doo Daddy in chatsaying, "Give Holani some love.
Never had a bad play."
He was 12 carries, 42 yards.
He played quite a bitof the first half- Mm

(21:39):
more than I expected, finishedwith an average of three
and a half yards per carry.
I, I thought he was fine.
I, I'm not, I…
He makes me more excited that, to see Zach Charbonnet back.
I but-

Clinton (21:53):
The average wasn't great, but, but he-

Brandan (21:54):
Fine.
He, he, he was okay
…Clinton: I thought it was pretty good.
You know, and again, there wasn't,like, huge gashing holes either.
He had a couple of those plays where, you know, a dude's in the backfield right
away and he's at least getting back tothe line of scrimmage or a gain of one
or two- Yeah … where instead of a,instead of a TFL, that's am- And maybe
behind the, the first team offensive line-

Clinton (22:12):
Yes.

Brandan (22:12):
Yeah … you know, he can, he can pick up those yards.
But-

Clinton (22:14):
I- there was a couple, and, and again, that first drive and the
second drive, there was a couple of nicefive-yard gains or, like, a incomplete
pass on first down, but they're runningon second down, then run third and five.
It's like, okay, that's very acceptable.
but you know, nothing, nobreakaways, nothing huge like that.
But I think Holani's an NFL,he's an NFL running back.
And actually he end- he very well couldbe our, our first series starter this year

(22:36):
versus the Patriots in a couple of weeks.
That, that's not out of the realmof possibilities whatsoever.

Mookie (22:42):
Yeah, he's anywhere from middle class Charbonnet
to rich man's Travis Homer.
That's a very

Brandan (22:49):
good description.
some highlights on thedefensive side of the ball.
Tyrice Knight finished with 10 totaltackles of seven solo, three assist.
he also had a couple passes defensed.
between him and I would say NoahIgbinoghene- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm … probably
the two guys that stood out to me, Mookie.

(23:09):
May- maybe a little bit of MikeMo early on, too, Mike Morris.

Mookie (23:13):
Yeah, I, I'd say so.
There were a couple of good, pass rushing reps from Riley Mills.
Riley Mills, yeah.
he, he didn't immediately jump outtoday as, as much as I saw in training
camp, and of course Sam Darnold and LeonardWilliams on the broadcast, they were
both pumping up how, how well Riley had,had been performing this off-season.
So, I definitely think that Millsstill has got plenty of room to grow, and

(23:33):
they gave him quite a bit of a workoutin the first half, and it was needed
because he didn't play, many…
He played 30 some odd snapsall of last season e- even in
the few games that he played.
So when it comes to the defensive side ofthe ball, as you said, Tyrice Knight looks
really good, and he's gonna be hard tokeep off the field, as Mike Macdonald said.
I can see him added in sub packagesor even maybe going back to rotating

(23:54):
him and, and Drake Thomas at times.
and also the fact that he, you couldline him up at edge, I think is,
is something that is worth monitoring.
Saw that quite a bit in pre-season.
Noah Igbinoghene did look good.
There was that one deep shot to,to Marquez Valdes-Scantling- Yeah
and Igbinoghene shutthat down immediately.
And, he also had a niceblitz that forced Howell into a

(24:14):
panic throw and a red zone stop.
So he…
I, I thought Igbinoghene looked good.
As far as, you know, otherpeople, Patrick O'Connell, I think,
he, he's making a good caseto be that fourth linebacker- Mm
on the depth charts, at leastin, you know, inside linebacker, and
he's been a special teams veteran,but I think he's got a case for,
you know, making the roster properinstead of being practice squad.

(24:35):
And Mike Morris, e- every yearit looks like Mike Morris is
on the bubble, and then he endsup being a preseason standout.
I, I will say you can tell it's preseasonwhenever Mike Morris is an edge.
Because in actual regular seasongames, he almost never is.

Clinton (24:49):
Right.

Mookie (24:49):
and I, I think a part of it is because if we…
if I have to critique this defense, and I've seen it when I was at camp
last week and then seeing it tonight, there's just nothing there as far as,
as deep in the depth chart edge rushers.
Jalen Gaines, I thoughthad a couple of good plays.
Yeah.
He had a nice tackle for loss and apressure would-be sack, but outside
of that, it's just too scarce.
Connor O'Toole really just got shut down.

(25:10):
Aidan Hubbard has been really not…
N- nothing to, to write home about.
He's been underwhelming, I would say.
So, and Jared Ivy is anywherefrom a big end to, to, like, an
interior lineman, so didn't see enoughof the pass rush really from, from
the reserves on the defensive line.

Brandan (25:26):
No.
D- They, they struggledto set an edge later on.
even the interior push, there wasn't much there.
I, I did see Devin Eastern on one playhad some nice push up the middle, but,
yeah, that was, that was about it.
I, I feel like we're now shifting to a lotmore of the negatives on defense, Glenn.

Clinton (25:43):
Well, I think there's a few more positives.
And I, I…
Mills, the first, again, very first fewseries, he, he was getting that bull rush
going and just put- pushing the pile back.
It kinda waned a littlebit as the game went on.
But I think, you know, I saw some folkson Twitter that were like, "Oh man, I
expected so much more from Riley Mills."
Like, well, okay.
A, A, I hear you, but guys, we've gottaremember that at some point it'll, when

(26:07):
Riley Mills is out there, he'll be, youknow, next to Leo or be next to,
you know, be next to, Byron Murphy.
and, you know, we got the newst- two days ago, I think now, that,
you know, that, DeMarcus Lawrenceis gonna retire after this year.
So the thinness after, you know, the, theones that did not play, and the thinness
after even, like, the second rotationguys are out there, it's like it's

(26:29):
something they're gonna have to address.
And, you know, whether that's a…
I don't think they'll do a mid-seasontrade to adjust, address
that unless they have injuries.
But the talent beyondthat's really not there.
And I'm glad you brought up Eastern.
Eastern, there was a play that Gainesmade a, made a nice tackle for a loss.
I think it was Gaines.
But it was really Easternthat blew it up completely.
So he did have that nice play, and I saw Dansby get mentioned

(26:52):
in the, the comments, too.
He had a nice play on the edge down, down by the goal line also, where he
just strung it out, but really heldhis ground and made a nice play.
I, I'm not sure if that was on Miltonor the running back that was out there.
But Dansby showed up a little bit as well.
So there was at least a few more, single, you know, single or,
examples or, two plays from a guy.

(27:15):
I gotta say, the, the linebacker play, once we were in the third and fourth
quarter, I did not think was very good.
You know?
Just, just guessing at holes alot of times, it seemed to me.
And, without calling dudesout specifically, 'cause I don't
wanna, like- It sounded like

Brandan (27:29):
you're calling out Chad Surratt, but,

Clinton (27:30):
Well, tr- Aaron Smith, too.
You know, I'm, I'm not tryingto kill dudes that, that may
or may not make this team.
But, and Chad Surratt- Chad Surratt'll

Brandan (27:37):
probably make the team just especially-

Clinton (27:38):
As a special teamer.
He's stuck around the NFL for a while.
But, but the level of linebackerplay really fell off a cliff.
But again, it's, it's, it is what it is.
but yeah, I mean, for me, Brandan,a couple of bright moments, but overall,
not, just not the most exciting game.
There weren't that many big plays

Brandan (27:56):
All right, Mookie.
Was, was it apparent w- on, onthe defensive side why we went ahead
and, got Terrion Arnold this week?

Mookie (28:05):
Well, y- yes and no.
I, I thought that Pritchett and, again,Pritchett and Igbinoghene were good.
We still…
We, we know nothing of JulianNeal, really- Mm … because
he hardly practiced in camp.
He got injured early.
And I have told Bryce Coutts, on, the Hawk Eye podcast on Friday
that I suspect that Neal n- not beingavailable for as long as he's ha- has

(28:26):
been injured was somewhat of a factor.
Not the ma- It's certainly not themain driving factor for signing
Terrion Arnold, 'cause you take a guylike Neal in the third round, he's
somebody you would anticipate would begetting significant snaps right away,
and he's just gonna be so far behind.
He's got so much catch-up to do thatthe, it's gonna take a bit for him to
even get snaps in the regular season.

(28:46):
So, but definitely once you gotdeeper in the depth chart, Jean-Charles,
as I said, brutal game, and then Ithink Fuller got beat a couple times,
ear- early in the third quarter.
So, Michael Dansby I thought, and Clinton mentioned it, had
some good ga- had some good plays.
Even the touchdown that hegave up, he was in position.
That was just a phenomenal catch, by that, Kamdyn Brown guy.

(29:07):
He had a, a n- nice night for Dallas.
Yeah, a couple nice

Brandan (29:09):
catches.
So, yeah.

Mookie (29:10):
Yeah, and, and newsflash, everybody, replacing Riq Woolen is
not gonna be as easy as it looks, andTerrion Arnold may not be a direct
replacement for Riq or anything, buthe's certainly gonna be in the mix,
along with Igbinoghene and Pritchett.
And, yeah, what, Dansby andFuller were, were gonna be long
shots to make the team to begin with.
So over the next couple weeks, we'llsee if they can really push higher up.

(29:34):
I know Dansby's had a good camp, butthere's a difference between having a
good camp and maybe making a case forthe roster, and having a good camp and
suddenly you're, you're cornerback three.
So we kinda saw that gap there.
Mm-hmm.

Brandan (29:44):
Yeah.
Shemar Jean-Charles gotpicked on a little bit.
Really, though, when I look over at the, list of receivers for the Cowboys,
it was 200 yards passing, and so that wasgenerally against second and third string.
So I, I'm, I'm not ready to freak outabout defensive depth or anything.
It's just, yeah, I, I think that-If Arnold is going to compete for a

(30:11):
spot, and we don't even know if he'sgoing to end up on the commissioner's
exempt list potentially, and,we may not have him until his legal
situation is all under control.
So, if it gets under control.
So, it's gonna bea lot to watch there.
I, I do hope that we get to see, yeah, a little bit of our third round
cornerback at some point, Mookie.

(30:32):
But, yeah, it does take me though, while we're talking about cornerback,
how about our corner, Clinton- Mm.
That got paid- Oh.
… a, record-setting contracttoday, and that is Mr.
Devon Witherspoon.

Clinton (30:47):
Yeah.
That…
So this is prob- probably the bestnews of the day, even with the game
being played, I'd say almost certainly.
And, and if the Seahawks cameout clean without injury, that'd
be the second-best news for sure.
but look, we all knew Spoon wasgonna be getting, getting his bag,
and I just-- What I continue toappreciate about this team is that

(31:07):
even with Hard Knocks happening and itbeing discussed a little bit on Hard
Knocks, no drama, no hold-ins, no…
He, he played, he played every…
You know, he's out there every singlepractice just doing his thing, balling
out there like, like Spoon does, and he's excited on the sideline.
Of course, he just made $100million guaranteed today,
which is really, really good.

(31:27):
but look, they locked up anotherguy from a recent draft class.
So you got JSN, highest paid wide receiverin, in the league for a bit, and you
have now Spoon, highest paid cornerin the league in the same exact draft.
You know?
It's Flowers to Schneider, butalso how they handled this.
Mookie for me, it wasalways going to get done.

(31:48):
There's no way an agent and ayoung man's walking away from,
you know, $130 million or so.
It, it was of course going to get done.
But I'm glad it's done and there'snot all this, like Gonzalez, who has
the same agent, seemingly wants adifferent type of structured contract.
But we're done, we're locked up,and now Spoon is what, here for…

(32:09):
He's got two more years on thiscontract, and it's a four-year extension.
Do I have that right?
Is he, is he here for six more years now?

Mookie (32:17):
Yeah, and I think there's a void year tacked onto that, so I mean,
it spreads things out a little bit more.
John Gilbert's over at FieldGoals will be the, cap experts
to crunch all the numbers on Sunday.
Certainly a lot more interestingthan covering, what
we just watched tonight.
But, in terms of Witherspoongetting that extension, I, I was never
worried and, and even if it didn'thappen this year, it's not like he's

(32:38):
a free agent at the end of this year.
Right.
They picked up his fifth year.
So as you said, Clinton, that extension, much like JSN's, doesn't start
until after the fifth-year option.

Clinton (32:46):
Right.

Mookie (32:46):
So he is the highest paid corner in the league, and at the same
time that deal doesn't really, thebulk of that deal doesn't kick in
until a couple years down the road.
So the average over time is not 30-plusmillion- Correct … in, in, in reality.
So, but Witherspoon, he isthat force multiplier, as, as has
been one of the, the Mike Macdonald, favorite phrases to say.

(33:09):
He is, he is the do it all.
And for Christian Gonzalez, maybe he'llend up being the highest paid corner by
like a couple hundred thousand bucks, muchlike Jahmyr Gibbs got that extension right
after Bijan Robinson did with Atlanta.
Mm-hmm.
But who cares?
I, I don't think anybody's gonnabe championing, "Hey, we got the
highest paid corner in the league."
All I care about is thatDevon Witherspoon got paid.
He is so valuable to thisteam because he can do it all.

(33:29):
He can cover, he can tackle, he can playthe run, he can blitz the quarterback.
He, he is a head c- defensive head coach'sdream, or really any head coach's dream
because he, of all the things hedoes on the defensive side of the ball.
And I'm looking forward to, seeing hisstat totals and as far as interceptions
and passes defense increase because that'slike the one thing that's missing is

(33:50):
can, can, can we get some more picks, out, out of Witherspoon, more turnovers,
more forced fumbles, more sacks, becausehe does all these things so well that
don't always show up in the box score.
But might as well just add onto that sohe's more comfortably in the NFL's top
100 next year as opposed to- Mm … 107with the, players list this time.

Brandan (34:08):
That's right.
DooDaddy in chat saying,"101 million guaranteed.
Good for him.
Love it."
Yokai Hawk saying, "Can't waitfor Spoon versus Gonzo week one."
And we've got,JuanADame619 with a 4.99
super chat saying,"Thanks for the live show.
Love seeing Foster and Rochellehave big games tonight."

(34:28):
Yes.
Yeah, we didn't, we didn't talk aboutRochelle's big kick off return, did we?
And, we can getto that too in a minute.
I, I wanted to mention with Spoon, because you did bring up something,
Mookie, that I thought was interesting.
yeah, 26 years old right now, andhe won't be a free agent until he's 32.
Perfect.
So-

Clinton (34:48):
Perfect
…Brandan: yeah.
the, the- Great … with thatfifth year option and the four-year
extension, it does seem like we're gonnahave, Spoon for quite a long time.
But yeah, how about special teams?
We, I feel like we, we should call outRochelle because that 52-yard return,
that was one of the more exciting momentsin an otherwise, game where there

(35:09):
weren't a, a ton of exciting moments.
Oh, you know, it's nice that, look, we were, we were the best
special teams unit in the league lastyear, probably by a, a good distance.
And, you pick it right backup, sans the Myers miss, and great.
I, I don't really care that Myers misses afield go- a field goal in, at August 15th.
I, I just don't.
It'd be nice if he madeit, but I don't care.

(35:29):
It's not a big deal that he didn't.
I thought the two best partsof the Rochelle, it
was a punt return, correct?
I think the two best parts of it,were, well, just him going north and
south, and also the announcer sayinglive, like, "Just, just go straight.
Go, just go straight.
Just go straight," which was kinda cool, too.
And he, and seeing thesideline, Mookie, explode.

(35:50):
you know, we don't hear a lotabout Rochelle, throughout
the, at least I didn't, throughout, throughout mini camp and all that stuff.
He's not getting anyglow up on Hard Knocks.
But it sure seemed that the playersknow who he is and were, were
ecstatic to see him make a big play.
The drive fizzle- fizzles out,Mookie, but the legend lives on.

Mookie (36:11):
Yeah, it does, and, and the main reason he was brought on is because
he was a very good special teams guy, verygood kick and punt returner in college.
So the fact that he, he was able tobreak one was nice, nice for him.
It's, it's not just tape for theSeahawks, it's tape for, a- another
team if in case he, he doesn't makethis roster, which if we're being
honest with ourselves is highly likely.

(36:31):
But you always wanna havethose highlights moments.
That's one of the good things ofpreseason, is when you see the starters,
the ones who've got comfortable jobsecurity just cheering on the dudes who
are just trying to, to make their way ontoan NFL roster, showcase their abilities.
so yeah, special teamsoutside of the Myers miss.
and look, it's, it happens.
Yeah.
He's not gonna be automatic.
I will say that the camp, that Iwas at last week, I think the last,

(36:53):
the Wednesday practice, he was missingto the right quite a bit- Mm … but
it was a windy day, so he might havejust been kind of trying to battle
the wind more than anything else.
but as far as the,the return game was good.
The coverage was, was excellent.
I mean, Jared Ivy and Brady Russellcombined for, for big hits on the
opening kick return that Dallas had.
TJ Harden able to recover that fumble.

(37:14):
That was, honestly one of the worstpunt return decisions I think I've
ever seen from that poor Cowboys dude.
Luckily it didn't lead to

Brandan (37:21):
a- Well, credit to Michael Dixon, though, for putting it down at the one.

Mookie (37:23):
Yes, it was, it would've been, it- He's

Brandan (37:25):
going for that 90 that Marshon's gotta get him on napping.

Mookie (37:27):
Yes, he was going for that 90, but, I, I think a-
awareness was, was, was not very highfor, for that Cowboys punt returner-
and Seattle was able to pounce on it.
Like, if you're at your own goal line, why are you picking it up when there's
like three Seahawks in your face?
So, but you gotta be on the spot, and I would anticipate that the Seahawks
are gonna once again have one of thebest special teams units in the league.
They've very rarely had poor special teamsover the last like 10, 15 years really.

(37:51):
It's like the end of the Brian Schneiderera and the first year with Harbaugh,
and a lot of that was really just D.
Williams and LaviskaShenault were that bad.
They, they corrected that.

Clinton (38:00):
Yes.

Mookie (38:00):
We're comfortable at returner, comfortable with our
kicker, comfortable with the punter, comfortable with the coverage units,
so it, it's gonna be a great team.

Brandan (38:08):
You know, we got, Boklo1251 calling out the broadcasting team,
our Seahawks home broadcasting team.
It, it sure is fun to hear, Michael Robinson and, u- and Mike Bennett,
Yes … both on the call, andCliff Avril down on the sideline.
Yokai Hawk saying,"Who had the worst day?
SGC Dallas number 21 or theDallas punt return guy?"

(38:29):
Ooh.
that's a, that's a tie for all three.
… Yokai Hawk also had aquestion about Jake Bobo and
being targeted early and often.
w- where do you comeout on that, Mookie?
Because I, it…
To me, it just seems like the idea…
He's wide receiver number four, so withwide receiver one, two, and three not out
there, it kinda makes sense for him to be, the more targeted wide receiver for

(38:53):
Drew Lock and this group, early on.

Mookie (38:56):
Heck, he's probably wide receiver five when
you add in Torrey Horton.
Mm-hmm.
Because what was notable to me-Sure … is that Horton didn't play.
I actually thought that they wouldconsider playing Torrey Horton a
little bit in preseason, givenhis rookie year was, was truncated
in, in such an unfortunate way.
But the fact that they decided tohold him out of this game, may
bode well for, for where he sitson, on the depth chart, that he is,

(39:17):
quote, "an established starter" atthis point as a wide receiver four.
But, you know, Bobo's alsojust coming back from injury.
He missed a good chunk of camp with,I, I believe it was a hamstring issue.
So it's also just to get himsome game reps and, and their
familiarity with him and Lock.
And I think for, for Milroe, it's justto have somebody who's in that top five
to, to have some comfort throwing to.

(39:38):
And Bobo is a security blanketfor all three quarterbacks.
So, he's, he's very recei- very quarterback friendly as far as
his ability to, make tough catches.
Not always to get open, but youknow, just, just to be there

Brandan (39:52):
Well, I really wanna thank everybody who joined us here live,
including our producers, Ryan911,Carly Perkins, YokaiHawk, who came
in with the Super Chat, BMW22OZ,
and,
JuanDame619.
And, we're gonna betalking more Seahawks.
d- do you have a three in, three out?

(40:13):
Is, is that, in thecards this week, Clinton?

Clinton (40:16):
Potentially, yeah.
I think I…
There was enough of, of individual playsthat I think stood out that we could do
something to, to go, one click deeper.
I'm not sure it'll be a videoone, but we, we could do it, Brandan.
We'll do something fun.

Brandan (40:28):
All right.
Well, we got stuff planned all throughoutthe week, and I really wanna thank you,
Mookie, for joining us for the post-game.
Anything coming up that people needto check out at fieldgulls.com?

Mookie (40:39):
Yeah, once I'm off, this podcast, we'll be doing,
our winners and losers.
And normally I'm a lot more thorough whenit's the regular season and playoffs, but,
it's almost nine o'clock already, soprobably not gonna be my maximum effort.
But we'll have that.
We'll have details of the DevonWitherspoon contract coming on Sunday.
And of course, we'll bedoing some game review.
We, we can't just burnthe tape out of this one.

(40:59):
So there'll be some All-22 review comingup, with, Alexandre Castro,
probably Tuesday or Wednesday.
It's gonna be dependent on, whenthe, when the All-22 footage comes out,
'cause Alexandre's based in Brazil, sothey have their All-22 in a, different
rights agreement, whereas all of us arehaving regular trouble logging into NFL+.

Brandan (41:20):
Mm.
Yes.
Well, really wanna thank youagain, Mookie, for coming on.
I, I see in chat it, it has beenway too long, and so I, I do need to
make sure that I invite you back on, a, a lot more often this season.
So, we will look forward tothat, and we will look forward to
more games coming up this preseason.
And I think with that, Clinton-

Clinton (41:39):
There's only one thing left to say

Brandan (41:41):
Go Hawks.

Mookie (41:42):
Go Hawks.

Clinton (41:43):
Go Hawks.
