The Brave New Weed Podcast

The Brave New Weed Podcast

The promise and potential of cannabis become clearer every day. As myth is replaced by science and folklore by evidence, everything we thought we knew about this much maligned plant is up for grabs. Brave New Weed Podcast is the voice of the post prohibitionist era. Hosted by author Joe Dolce, and co-host Matthew Hendershot, the discussions are guaranteed to be fun, fearless, and informed. This podcast follows the publication of Dolce’s Brave New Weed: Adventures into the Uncharted World of Cannabis, a book that the New York Times called “a loving rethink of all things marijuana.” Dolce has gathered the most provocative leaders, thinkers and shapers of new world weed to explore the hottest topics of the day. In addition to exploring WeedCulture, WeedScience, WeedHealth, WeedProducts, WeedPolitics, he’ll also include opponents of normalization, so that he can challenge their positions and give them a damn hard time. The primary focus of the podcast is on the uncanny natural healing power of CBD and THC, but topics and stories are expanded as appropriate to capture the cultural zeitgeist of the day. The Coca Cola bottling billionaire was arrested for smuggling 5,000 CBD hemp seedlings into St. Kitts on his private jet (the press called the CBD “cannabis” – silly reporters). One of the turning points for my understanding the power of medical cannabis occurred in an Israeli nursing home where elders with dementia were being treated with it. Rather than being a gloomy and harrowing place like so many of these patient warehouses are, ...

A number of you gave me grief when we featured investment leader Rich Batenburg on How to Invest in Cannabis (EP 49).  “Rich had great advice for people with $1 million in the bank but what about smaller investors like me?”

Message received loud and clear, which...

A few months ago I heard a rumor that CBD was getting more Google searches than God. I couldn’t find any evidence verifying that, but Google did reveal this surprising trend:

Advocates fume that these new cannabis companies are pulling in billions without supporting orgs that have done the hard work for the last 60 years.

That’s the question this episode obliquely addresses with two insightful men: Kris Krane, activist turned co-founder of 4Front, an investment and multistate dispensary firm, and Bruce Barcott, Deputy Editor at Leafly, who asks if corporate insensitivity and greed killed NY’s failed leg...

Followers of this podcast know that strain names are largely bullshit and not reliably indicative of what will happen after inhalation. The more accurate determinants of a high are the terpenes, those powerful smell molecules that combine with THC to direct the effects and the healing. [EP 14 with Dr. Ethan Russo is a great refresher on this topic.] For even more in depth terptalk ...

If medical cannabis is ever going to get the respect it deserves as a medicine, it’s going to have to do better than “Go home a pack a bowl.” It’s sort of hard to imagine a doctor or any healthcare provider ever saying, “Take a few hits and call me in the morning.”

That’s one of the reasons I’m excited about the GoFire metered dose inhalers, which are due to hit the market in the next few months. Not only is GoFire a nifty convect...

In this very sweet interview, Dan gives us the inside scoop on edibles, candy and who likes what. Here are just a few tidbits of what you’re going to hear.

  • Adult men like gummies until they pass 50; then they like hard mints (just like grandpa used to like!)
  • Chocolate is loved by women over 32; and by men over 40.
  • Adults, not kids, like the texture of “chewy."  Interestingly, “chewy" is liked by less than 18% of the populat...

Greg Gerdeman, PhD was one of the first people to make me aware that the runner’s high is not the result of endorphins, but is in fact, brought on by endocannabinoids -- the molecules produced by our own bodies that mimic the effects of THC and CBD found in the plant. Since then, Greg, a former tenured professor at Eckerd College and now Chief Science officer at 3 Boys Farm, an organic greenhouse-...

There are four reasons why medical cannabis is not being used to its full potential, especially for chronic conditions like pain, anxiety and insomnia. The first two reasons are easily understood, high prices and limited access. Most patients can’t afford the hundreds of dollars per month costs that cannabis meds incur and many medical states make access difficult by limiting the conditions it can be used for. Fortunately, the hors...

If you listen to this podcast you know that I am fascinated with the notion of flow and how to use cannabis (and other substances and practices to get into the zone). The term “flow” was first coined in 1975 and is defined as a high state of functioning in which you lose sense of self, time and effort. It’s that state when you feel as though you’re being carried along by a water current or as if you’re skiing a course of moguls, ev...
