The Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning signed a multiyear contract Wednesday. Benning is in his fourth season as general manager of the Canucks after replacing Mike Gillis, who was fired after the 2013-14 season, and is in the final season of his contract. Before coming to Vancouver, he had spent eight seasons as assistant GM of the Boston Bruins and helped build the team that defeated the Canucks in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final. The Canucks reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs in Benning's first season as GM but have finished next-to-last in the Western Conference in each of the past two seasons. Under first-year coach Travis Green, they are 22-28-6 this season, 18 points behind the Minnesota Wild for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Western Conference, entering their game against the Florida Panthers at Rogers Arena on Wednesday. Benning has brought in a number of prospects, most notably forward Brock Boeser, who leads NHL rookies with 26 goals. He has also traded forwards Jannik Hansen and Alexandre Burrows for prospects Nikolay Goldobin and Jonathan Dahlen, and selected center Elias Pettersson with the No. 5 pick of the 2017 NHL Draft.

Dion Phaneufwas traded to the Los Angeles Kings by the Ottawa Senators for forwards Marian Gaborikand Nick Shore on Tuesday. Forward Nate Thompson and Phaneuf, a defenseman, will go to Los Angeles. Phaneuf will likely play in a top four that includes Drew Doughty, a Norris Trophy winner; Jake Muzzin and Alec Martinez. Phaneuf had 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) in 53 games for the Senators this season, including a 6-3 loss at the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. Thompson was injured and has played four games since Jan. 5. Gaborik and Shore played to the end of a 7-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Ottawa acquired Phaneuf in a nine-player trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Feb. 9, 2016. He has 478 points (133 goals, 345 assists) in 955 NHL games for the Calgary Flames, Toronto and Ottawa. The 32-year-old is signed through the 2020-21 NHL season. Ottawa will retain 25 percent of the remaining money on his contract. Shore has 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 49 games this season, and 49 points (14 goals, 35 assists) in 221 games with the Kings. The 25-year-old can become a restricted free agent July 1. Gaborik has 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 30 games this season, and 808 points (403 goals, 405 assists) in 1,019 NHL games with the Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, Columbus Blue Jackets and Kings. The 36-year-old is signed through 2020-21. He had 22 points (14 goals, eight assists) in 26 playoff games winning the Stanley Cup with Los Angeles in 2014. Thompson has 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 43 games this season, and 122 points (52 goals, 70 assists) in 593 NHL games with the Boston Bruins, New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks and Senators. The 33-year-old is signed through next season.

Lars Ellersigned a five-year, $17.5 million contract with the Washington Capitals on Saturday. The contract has an average annual value of $3.5 million. The 28-year-old center, who could have become an unrestricted free agent July 1, has 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists) this season. Washington acquired Eller on June 24, 2016, in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens for a second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.

Defenseman Brendan Smithwas placed on waivers by the New York Rangers last Thursday. Smith, who turned 29 Thursday, signed a four-year, $17.4 million contract ($4.35 million average annual value) with New York on June 29 and has eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 44 games this season. Smith was not claimed by another NHL team and was sent to Hartford, the Rangers' affiliate in the American Hockey League, on Friday. Smith has 79 points (17 goals, 62 assists) in 353 games in seven NHL seasons with the Detroit Red Wings and Rangers. The Red Wings selected him with the No. 27 pick in the 2007 NHL Draft. New York acquired Smith in a trade with the Red Wings on Feb. 28, 2017, for a third-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.

Injuries:

Goaltender Brian Elliottis expected to miss 5-6 weeks after having surgery to repair a core muscle injury, Philadelphia Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said Tuesday. Elliott was injured while facing Clayton Keller in the second round of the shootout during a 4-3 victory at the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday. He slumped to the ice and had to be helped off after being hit in the mask by Keller's stick on his follow-through. Michal Neuvirth got the win in relief after he denied all five shooters he faced. Neuvirth, who started against the New Jersey Devils at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday, is expected to get the majority of the playing time in Elliott's absence. Alex Lyon, who was recalled from Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League on Sunday, will be the backup for the foreseeable future, Hextall said.

Calgary Flames goaltender Mike Smithwill miss at least two games because of a lower-body injury beginning against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Tuesday. Smith, who is 23-16-6 with a 2.53 goals-against average and .921 save percentage, was injured and left with two seconds remaining in a 3-2 win at the New York Islanders on Sunday. Gulutzan said Smith will be considered day to day after the two games. The Flames visit the Nashville Predators on Thursday. David Rittich (5-1-2 with a 2.20 GAA and .927 save percentage) will start for the Flames (29-19-8), who are 4-1-0 in their past five games and in third place in the Pacific Division, two points behind the second-place San Jose Sharks.

Defenseman Steven Kampferwill be out 4-6 weeks because of a fractured hand, New York Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton said Monday. Kampfer, who has one assist in 22 games this season, played 22:39 and was on the ice at the end of a 3-1 win at the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. He is the latest Rangers defenseman to be sidelined by an injury, joining Ryan McDonagh (upper body), Kevin Shattenkirk (knee surgery) and Marc Staal (cervical strain).

New Jersey Devils goaltender Cory Schneiderwill be out the rest of the week because of a hip/groin injury he sustained in 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Jan. 23. Schneider, who has missed the past eight games, was placed on injured reserve Monday, retroactive to the day of the injury. He is expected to resume skating next week. Schneider is 17-11-6 with a 2.79 goals-against average and .913 save percentage in 35 games.

Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichelis out indefinitely after sustaining a high ankle sprain in a 4-2 win against the Boston Bruins on Saturday. Eichel left in the first period when he fell backward while being checked by Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk along the end boards. Chosen by the Sabres with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, Eichel leads the team with 53 points (22 goals, 31 assists) in 55 games this season. He missed the first 21 games of the 2016-17 season because of a high left ankle sprain that sidelined him for seven weeks.

New York Rangers goalie Ondrej Pavelecwill be out 2-3 weeks with a sprained MCL. Pavelec was injured in the first period of a 4-3 win against the Calgary Flames on Friday. He made seven saves and didn't return for the second period. Pavelec is 4-7-1 with a 3.01 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. Goalie Alexandar Georgiev was recalled from Hartford of the American Hockey League on Saturday and will back up Henrik Lundqvist.

Malcolm Subbanwas placed on injured reserve by the Vegas Golden Knights with an upper-body injury Saturday. The backup goaltender was injured during the morning skate prior to a 5-3 win at the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant said. There is no timetable for his return. Vegas recalled goaltender Maxime Lagace from Chicago of the American Hockey League. Subban, 24, is 11-3-1 with a 2.59 goals-against average and .912 save percentage in 16 games (15 starts). He missed 13 games earlier this season with a lower-body injury.

San Jose Sharks forward Joel Ward will be out indefinitely because of a shoulder injury. Ward left a 5-3 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday at 7:43 of the second period after Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt hit him into the half-wall in the Vegas zone, injuring his right shoulder. https://twitter.com/CurtisPashelka/status/962050151543025664Ward, 37, has 11 points (five goals, six assists) in 46 games this season, the last on a three-year contract he signed July 3, 2015.

Louis Blues defenseman Joel Edmundsonhad surgery to repair a broken right forearm Friday and will be re-evaluated in six weeks. Edmundson (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) left a 6-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday with 7:53 remaining in the first period after he was hit by a shot. He was placed on injured reserve, and Robert Bortuzzo took his place in the lineup against the Winnipeg Jets. Edmundson had 15 points (six goals, nine assists) and was averaging 20:15 of ice time in 56 games this season. The 24-year-old led the Blues and was fourth in the NHL with 125 blocked shots. The Blues recalled defenseman Chris Butler from San Antonio of the American Hockey League. The 31-year-old has 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) in 47 AHL games. He has played 388 NHL games but six in the previous two seasons.

Calgary Flames forward Troy Brouweris out week to week because of a facial fracture. Brouwer was injured when he was hit with a puck early in the first period of a 3-2 win at the New Jersey Devils on Thursday. He left the game briefly before returning midway through the period and played 11:55. Brouwer, 32, has 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) in 54 games this season. He's missed nine games in the past seven seasons.

Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Deryk Engellandhas been fined $2,688.17, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for cross-checking Chicago Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad during NHL Game No. 874 in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Feb. 13, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today. The incident occurred at 0:57 of the first period. Engelland was assessed a minor penalty for high-sticking.

Washington Capitals defenseman Madison Boweyhas been fined $1,890.68, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for interference against Winnipeg Jets forward Matt Hendricks during NHL Game No. 873 in Winnipeg on Tuesday, Feb. 13, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today. The incident occurred at 7:09 of the second period. Bowey was assessed a minor penalty for interference.

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglienhas been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for slashing Washington Capitals forward Jay Beagle during NHL Game No. 873 in Winnipeg on Tuesday, Feb. 13, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today. The incident occurred at 18:32 of the third period. Byfuglien was assessed a minor penalty for slashing.

Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brownhas been suspended for one game, without pay, for kneeing Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev during NHL Game No. 846 in Tampa on Saturday, Feb. 10, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced Sunday. The incident occurred at 14:27 of the second period. Brown was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for kneeing. Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Brown will forfeit $31,586.02.

Ottawa Senators forward Alexandre Burrowshas been suspended for 10 games, without pay, for serving as the aggressor in an altercation and kneeing New Jersey Devils forward Taylor Hallduring NHL Game No. 816 in Ottawa on Tuesday, Feb. 6, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced last Wednesday. The incident occurred at 10:02 of the second period. Burrows was assessed two minor penalties, one for cross-checking and one for roughing. Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Burrows will forfeit $134,408.60.

Other Interesting Stories:

Seattle has applied for an NHL expansion team. A group led by Jerry Bruckheimer, a Hollywood producer, and David Bonderman, a private equity CEO, was authorized Dec. 7 to file an application for expansion by the NHL Board of Governors. It paid a $10 million application fee, Sportsnet reported. The cost of the team would be $650 million, and Commissioner Gary Bettman said during 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend last month that the NHL is looking at only Seattle for possible expansion. The earliest the team could begin playing is the 2020-21 NHL season, when it is expected renovations of KeyArena would be complete. Commissioner Bettman said he thinks if Seattle were to be granted the 32nd NHL team, he expects it would want the same rules for the NHL Expansion Draft that were granted to the Vegas Golden Knights, who came into the League as the 31st team this season. Vegas paid $500 million.

Honors/Milestones:

Philadelphia Flyers center Claude Giroux, Calgary Flames left wing Johnny Gaudreau and Minnesota Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending Feb. 11. Giroux registered 3-3-6 in four games to propel the Flyers (28-19-9, 65 points) to a perfect week and third place in the Metropolitan Division standings. Gaudreau placed second in the NHL with 2-5-7 in four contests to guide the Flames (29-19-8, 66 points) to a 3-1-0 week and into third place in the Pacific Division. Dubnyk went 2-0-1 with a 1.96 goals-against average, .950 save percentage and one shutout to backstop the Wild (30-19-6, 66 points) to five out of a possible six standings points.

Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin, Florida Panthers goaltender Harri Sateri and Vegas Golden Knights right wing Reilly Smith have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending Feb. 4. Malkin led all skaters with six goals and eight points (6-2-8 in 3 GP) as the Penguins (29-22-3, 61 points) gained four of a possible six points to finish the week in third place in the Metropolitan Division. Sateri went 3-0-0 with a 1.67 goals-against average and .946 save percentage to guide the Panthers (22-22-6, 50 points) to a perfect week and into a tie for fourth place in the Atlantic Division. Smith finished second in goals and tied for third in points (4-1-5 in 4 GP) as the Golden Knights (35-13-4, 74 points) won three of four games, set a new benchmark for wins by a team in its inaugural NHL season and finished the week first overall in the Western Conference standings.

Sidney Crosbyscored twice, including the 400th goal of his NHL career for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 4-1 win against the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center on Sunday. Crosby is the 95th player in NHL history (seventh active) to score 400 goals and the 37th to do so in 839 games or fewer.

He was the No. 1 pick in the 1998 NHL Draft. He was 18 years old when he made his NHL debut. But it is the No. 4 that Vincent Lecavalierwill be remembered for, forever. The former Tampa Bay Lightning forward who helped them win the 2004 Stanley Cup had his No. 4 raised to the rafters at Amalie Arena on Saturday.
