All right, gentlemen, it is justa few days after the Austrian
Grand Prix.
I'm really excited to have bothI think if anything, let's just
What was your race highlight,Oh, I love the opening battle
(01:17):
Um, that was just I just IJust supremely gifted racers
And, um, the opening laps Ithought were really, really fun
to watch.
And it was good to see Max beingI would call it a new weapon.
(01:41):
And um, and um, he was backI mean, Max has always been Max,
but now he's got the, the carto, to, to show that, um, I
think that there were a lot ofstorylines, but that's, that's
the part that I enjoyed themost.
Those guys went at each other sohard and it was just beautiful
to watch.
(02:03):
What about you, Joe?
Well, I thought the fact thatgame was great news.
Um, uh, whether it's Red bull orargument, which I'm sure we can
it was, it was spectacular.
And, you know, um, I don't thinkwas well, George was, was
(02:30):
He was fortunate to get poleposition with that yellow flag
incident.
And then he was fortunate to beeveryone else, when Kimi was
over the place and the othersUm, and so I think that, uh, you
know, towards the end they wereboth catching.
I reckon if there'd been twomore laps, Kimi might have
(02:51):
beaten the pair of them, youknow, which was, which was, you
know, it was good fun to watchanyway.
It certainly was excitingMax closing on on George and
So, um, that's, that's whatYou know, it should be, it
should be exciting right to theflag.
And that certainly was I thinkthe, the um, I don't know what
(03:16):
it was.
The margin of the margin ofBut Kimi was only three tenths
Um uh Max and that was prettyBut I thought Max was brilliant.
It's great when you see, uh, aproper pro going at it full
time.
Big time.
Um, it's just good to see.
(03:36):
And, you know, it's just, youthe week before last in Spain,
Uh, sure.
The mercs were there, but youtheir game a bit though.
Yes we do.
Yeah.
Actually you ended up saying aquestions for later on, but I'll
(03:58):
move on to that.
Joe, is, I think, the location, the beauty of where this race
occurs is always something Ilook forward to every year and
the enthusiasm of the fansthere.
I know there are different timesWe note that a lot, but I feel
like the Austrian Grand Prixalways provides that level of,
(04:18):
uh, just devotion to the sport,I think, and then also to their
home team, something I lookforward to.
Joe.
Yeah.
Can I just say at this pointthat you need to be devoted to
get to the Austrian Grand Prixbecause it is absolutely in the
middle of nowhere and there's noaccommodation.
So, you know, you can.
In previous years, I've drivenhour in the evening to get in
(04:44):
that was the closest place IUm, a lot of people go there and
stay in tents, which is actuallynot a bad idea, except, you
know, obviously you need to workor eat or do anything other than
listening to drunken Dutchpeople.
Um, it is, um, it's not reallyimportant to say that.
(05:05):
And the other thing is also thatthese are not local fans
were Dutch and they drive, theywhatever it is from, from, from
Every year they do it.
It's amazing to watch.
It's like, you know, if you'reautobahns of Germany, it's like
(05:28):
division of Holland going south.
Also on the heels of what we'reStates regarding the World Cup
from around the world showing upI think it's kind of cool that
year round in a much differentexchange of people just
(05:53):
for a sport and the.
The festival atmosphere.
It's wonderful.
I think it's the human aspect oflove is seeing the generational
People who are coming fromAnd as you said, if the Dutch
coming in, I mean, I've got toimagine the people who every
year go, oh, this is when it'shappening.
(06:15):
And you just kind of know thatThey take they take every single
euro out of the Dutch pocket, believe me.
I mean, I love it, the, the, theaccommodation, the restaurants,
everything cost silly moneybecause they can get away with
it.
I mean, that's, that's thebusiness of the sport too,
right?
So I'm okay with that.
I think it's fantastic.
(06:35):
So I guess my highlight took usI want to go back to the track
You answered a question.
And I want to make sure you alsoI wondered if the race had just
Would Kimi have moved up in theAnd it made me really excited to
But can you go a little bitwhat led you to say that?
(07:01):
Like, what were you seeing inI mean, he started in fourth.
What did you think of his raceWell, he started in fourth,
probably shouldn't have beenwent off twice on the first lap.
Um, because I think probablyhis brakes or his tires, one or
(07:23):
Um, you know, the Red bull ringis very difficult for those kind
of things.
Anyway, he was on it right fromAnd, uh, and then the pit stops
were on different sequences, andKimi had a lot more tyre left at
the end than the others, whichis why he was able to close in
and he was coming in at, youknow, probably half a second a
(07:46):
lap, um in the, in the closingstages, George was, George was
was fading away fast as he hadmuch older tires and Louis was,
you know, he had slightlyyounger tires than sorry, not
Louis.
Max had slightly younger tiresslightly older tires than Kimi.
(08:07):
Sorry.
Um but but in the end, you know, car advantage too I'm sure.
Well I think that's interestingOne, I remember during the race
It felt like the the garage.
If you want to bring in Kimi in,you know, and if that if that
had been followed through, ifthey had decided to put Kimi in
(08:30):
in a position where he was morein supporting role of George, I,
I did wonder if that would haveaffected his race differently in
the sense of what we're sayingnow that just a couple more
laps, he probably could have wonthe second.
There was so much Image.
Post race questions commentarygot called in, when Carlos
(08:57):
the yellow flag, and when themuch as they were discussed.
I have to wonder if by stayingmaking, that is what allowed
that if again he had had twosignificantly made a difference
(09:18):
Do you see where I'm kind ofcalls that Mercedes was making?
Yeah, I think with the strategydidn't look good in the end, but
when they made it.
It just depends on the length ofAnd you know, who knows?
Who knows, because it's not eventhe race director who decides
(09:40):
that.
It's how long the marshals takeUm, so basically I think it was
the right call when they did it,but it became the wrong call
because the virtual safety carwas cleaned up and done very
quickly.
So he didn't, you know, hewas hoping for.
But in the end, I'm not sure itIt might have made a little bit
(10:02):
Um, but I don't think it wouldI mean, maybe he could have, he
come in as early as he did, butend of it all.
So you know, it works both ways.
So I don't think you canThey had to make a call.
They made the call they hadthat call and they made it.
(10:25):
And you know, sometimes it Yeah.
Dick, what are your thoughts?
Well, I thought yeah, I thoughtthem a little bit of a gap
yellow to, when they go to theI mean, to me, it's sort of like
(10:46):
comes to a stop on the any partthey're on the track stopped.
Why wouldn't you go straight toUm, or, or full, you know, full
I, I don't, um, I don'tCan I leave?
Can I leave in here?
That's a, that's a very AmericanUm, in American racing, the
(11:13):
if a fingernail falls out thea yellow and, and you know, this
Um and any car that stops, they, they, they immediately have a
yellow.
So I in Europe, we, there is alittle bit more leeway and, and
there's a lot more sort of isthis going to be, um, is this
(11:36):
going to be something that needseveryone to slow down or can we
keep going.
And that's what happened inTo be fair, you know, Jorge went
on the last lap in qualifying.
Now he did lift off.
There are plenty of argumentsabout whether that's sensible or
not.
You know, he took pole positionyellow flag, not double yellow,
(12:04):
if it was in theory, legal.
Is that right?
You know, should there be ifthere is a yellow flag, there is
a danger.
Um and you know, should the polelifted off and lost a couple of
a um a breach of the regulation.
(12:25):
It's an interesting argument, the thought, you know what we
um I think it's in Europe, itI mean it's heading towards the
American way because you seem tohave virtual safety cars and
safety cars for anything thesedays.
(12:45):
Whereas in the old days, youthey'd have a yellow and the
they'd go back racing again.
Um, so and nowadays I'm not sureunderstand why safety wise they
Yeah.
I look at it from a coupleI think from the American
(13:07):
do throw a yellow or a safetyRight?
And the reason I think is, isbecause at one stage, road
of a thing in the United States.
It was more the ovals, which areknow, there's nowhere there's no
(13:30):
on the side.
And, um, and so I think, I thinknow because on many road
Push the car off to the side andNo big deal.
Um, right.
There's also another element, suppose you'd call it, which is
(13:51):
Um, where there is a, there is ayou name it.
Much more so than elsewhere.
And I think that that permeatesthrough the, um, the thinking
process.
It is.
Oh my God, there's a risk.
Stop it.
Um, yeah.
And you know, even if it'ssubconscious, I'm sure it's
(14:12):
there.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I mean, getting a marshal runYou know, and on so many levels.
So yeah.
Interesting.
The great point.
Well, and I was going to say, Ithink also it goes back to some
of our other conversations aboutcost benefit analysis that we do
differently across the twocommunities.
(14:33):
We talked about kids andepisodes, the one about, um, why
racers on the grid.
And we talked about parentingstyles of kids going away to
boarding school in the Europeancontext, where here that's more
uncommon.
It's not common.
That's the best way to put it.
And I think that goes back tothe way that we just look at
(14:55):
risk.
I think both of you arethe circuit versus the insurance
happened and the timing of whereknowing the rules, those are
people saying, you know, he knewthat this was a lift off would
(15:17):
So actually, Joe, I did want youto kind of explain a little bit
about the whole quali yellowflag issue.
I know you wanted to kindly notgo too far onto that in the
previous question, but I'd lovefor you to just kind of explain
it a little bit more for thosewho might not understand what
happened?
Okay, well, normally whenhits the wall, you have, um.
(15:43):
Normally when the car hits theUm, but on this particular
occasion, for whatever reason itwas decided it was a single
yellow.
And that meant that Georgethe sector, uh, and still
(16:03):
because he was going fast enoughon the track, he had lifted off
laps and yet still take poleoff completely, assuming it was
And he admitted later he made amistake as to how that decision
(16:24):
is made.
It's down to the race director.
Um, fundamentally and raceknow, it can be a little bit.
Normally there's a lot of ruleslittle bit subjective.
And I think this was one ofthose occasions when it was
subjective.
Okay.
Okay.
(16:44):
Yeah.
I felt like there was thatit open just enough.
Even just listening to Georgeand his commentary, people's
commentary afterward, noting hisvery quick words about the
rules, I thought, yeah, he knowsthe rules well enough to know
that this might be that grayarea of discretion, and that
(17:06):
might be controversial to some, but it also shows your
experience and also the thinkingin that moment as the last
seconds of your attempt to getthrough Q3.
And, you know, you've got to putwherewithal to say those words
I thought, what shows just thedriver and Especially at this
(17:33):
And for someone who wants to beSo, I mean, I don't want to go
But I just wanted to say Ithought that was a very
interesting situation.
And I always like the graySo unless you guys want to keep
move on to Ferrari.
Let's do it.
Okay.
How does this race fit in thecontext of the season story for
(17:54):
Lewis?
I would say, particularly afterthe Barcelona win, Joe, what are
your thoughts?
Well, I think that goes back toBarcelona, which is don't think
Um, because it wasn't.
And clearly they they had paceForget it.
They were going backwards fromSo there's a fundamental issue.
(18:18):
They've got they had upgrades.
They were happy.
The drivers were happy with theBut there's still something
court horsepower I think.
So. Um, and you know, we'll seeIt was a very hot day and the
Uh, and maybe the brakesproblems over the weekend.
I mean, it wasn't asCadillac had both cars out with
(18:44):
couple of laps, wasn't it?
It was ridiculous.
Um, but it was, you know, theyUm, and, you know, by the end of
drifted well back.
So the car's got pace but itthe same, you know, the McLaren
but sometimes I'm sure it can beDick any thoughts on that.
(19:11):
Yeah.
I mean pretty much mirrors whatI think, you know, Lewis was
through the race to go to mode.
TS I think is what they calledAnd he was like, why would I do
Because I don't have any powerAnd, you know, it was a little
bit of a back and forth withwith his pit wall and, um, and
(19:32):
it was because the engine wasoverheating.
And so, you know, as an engineSo, you know, are they down on
Yeah, they're down on powerAnd then they're dialing back to
a very conservative mode to justkeep the engine, you know,
alive.
And so they even lost moreAnd then, you know, the tire deg
(19:54):
And, you know, some of it, noUm, I was a little surprised
some pretty high tire deg.
They seemed to be okay there.
But this particular type of tireAnd I guess it's because the
hotter in Austria.
Um, I thought it waslittle bit of a sidebar, you
(20:20):
the radio during the race.
He says, hey, the tyres aresurface and implying that the
He did not feel like it wasoverheating, which says to me
that there's an amazinglydelicate touch there, that that
he can feel the differencebetween, uh, a surface thermal
issue versus a complete carcassissue.
(20:42):
So, um, I thought that wasBut yeah, I agree with Joe.
I think I think Ferrari isthey're there yet.
I think one needs to add tothat, that the, the, the Red
bull ring is a very specifickind of circuit because you've
got a lot of sustained highcornering speeds.
(21:06):
And that means that the tyresUnlike other places.
There are one or two places likelot too, because there's two
And then beyond that, it's justtwo very heartbreaking bits,
(21:30):
But really it's just fastAnd so if if the car's nailed to
It doesn't start to slide.
But if it starts to slide thatSo.
Mhm.
And it's a different kind ofSo I think that that is, you
(21:50):
that Ferrari had.
Who knows.
I mean, they'll know becauseBut we don't know.
We don't we don't have the data.
So.
Yep.
No. Great point.
So moving on to McLaren.
Where were they at the race.
Do you think this samewas seeming to have challenges,
(22:12):
placed onto McLaren in theirbigger happening there?
Yeah, no, I think Lando said itHe said, you know, we're three
think we're we're trying toAnd good work is being done, but
the development race.
(22:32):
And, you know, that's, that'sSo I, I, I, you know, I had a
pretty good weekend really, buthe wasn't, he wasn't able to
challenge seriously.
I mean, you can the thing isto look at the race and
obviously, because a quick carbut in the race it's a different
(22:56):
Uh, you've got to keep on doingAnd you know, that's where
others are less strong.
So it led me to have thisIf Max or Lewis had been in
think that they would have beenthem, despite the fact that, as
(23:18):
they're three months behind?
Um, no, I just I think it's justjust got to do the work.
You know, it's, uh, that'sgot to make a mistake or you've
If everyone's working full outall the time, the, the, uh, the
(23:38):
pecking order will remain thesame.
So you've got to work doublyhard, um, you know, to make
things happen.
It's a complicated thing.
So.
Dick.
Agree, disagree.
Yeah, I agree.
Um, you know, and we kind of sawit with Max, you know, the car,
you know, at Barcelona wasn'thorrific.
(24:00):
It wasn't on the pace, but itYou bring in a new package and
um, got a you know, like I saidthat he can work with now.
And, um, and I think it allum, if, if you don't have the
(24:23):
how good of a driver you are.
Um, you've got to have that carUh, and then execute really,
Um, to be able to be, you know,So, um, yeah, I mean, I think
that's kind of where my head'sat.
Okay.
Well, that kind of led to thequestion I was going to ask
(24:44):
about Red bull, which is, didyou think going into the race
that Max was going to be athreat?
Uh, Max is always he's alwaysIt's just the place he excelled.
Um, but did I think they wereNo, I didn't, and I think you
(25:05):
You know, he wasn't far behind,He wasn't on it like Max was.
Um, and Max just is, is justexceptionally good at that
place.
Yeah, yeah I agree.
Dick.
Any other thoughts before wemove on to the middle of the
pack?
Well, I was impressed not onlythought that is a better
(25:31):
changes that they have made.
You think about Isaac and, um,He's not being just completely
Yes.
Max is obviously on thefurther ahead of, of Isaac, but
(25:56):
years past with the second car.
And I think this has a lot to doplace at Red bull.
Um, because Helmut Marko's notAnd I mean, that's what I'm, I'm
I think Lauren Mekis has goneand, and done really a fairly
rapid shift in culture, usuallyculture in an organization takes
(26:19):
a long time to get that, youknow, to, to, to affect the
cultural change.
It takes a long time to do that.
He's done this very quickly.
And I really think that, thathe's in a, in a situation where
a young Isaac is in a situationwhere, um, he's being allowed to
grow and to still be a, asophomore in Formula one on a
(26:41):
very big team with a spotlightright on him, you know, and, um,
I think he's doing admirablywell, uh, at this stage, I agree
with that entirely that thecofactor having gone is, is
deeply significant.
I'm not sure it's a it was aI think it was just Marco and to
(27:03):
Um, were very much sort of, youin their, in the way they look
not good enough.
Boom.
Get rid of him.
You know, I think Christian leftthat left those in the helmet
Helmet was very much that sortof.
If he's not good enough, he'sUm, and there's no, there's no
(27:24):
So, um, I think that that'sAnd, you know, Isaac.
Isaac can beat himself up bettergrid, I think.
I mean he's, he's actually notLando.
Lando a massive, uh, massiveUm, but um, but Isaac.
(27:49):
Isaac is very, very critical ofOn the one hand, uh, if it's not
don't undermine your ownbe pretty strong.
He's, he's pretty confident inUm, and he, and he absolutely
you know, so, um, and I thinkthe result is he ultimately, um,
(28:17):
No, he's not, but you know, unlikely that he is.
I don't think he's in the sameBut then again, there aren't
are in that league.
So you know um I think that'sEverybody has a level that they
want to improve it, there's anot one of these, you know, if
(28:42):
extra tenth here and there.
Um, Joe, do you think that Isaaccould play Robin to Max's Batman
where, um, he can come in andwhile Max is winning.
And if something happens to Max,this year, but maybe in his
(29:10):
could actually step up andDo you think that he would be
I think that if you look at, uh,a while, but I think an element
And then Perez was, you know, inthe start of whichever year it
(29:30):
was, Perez was right up there,um, battling for the world
championship for the first threeraces.
And then Max, uh, got thingstogether again and basically
slammed him.
And, um, but he remained there.
And then after that, he justAnd the last year was
So I think it, uh, it's a littlebit dependent on, on the mental
(29:54):
strength.
It's dependent on the supportIt's dependent on lots of
I mean, these guys have all gotsuper duper talent, you know?
Yeah.
He was genetically bred to be aYeah.
I mean Absolutely right.
They mixed up the right DNA.
(30:15):
Got it?
Really?
Really right.
Well, I mean, it it does beg thehe is is a child between him and
So there's got to be some DNA inI should think that, um you
to be a racing driver, but, um,young at the moment, but yeah, I
(30:41):
it's interesting isn't it, theof grand prix racing leading to
That's right, that's right.
Oh. Too funny.
Well, I think that if anything, what I remember.
So we'll give her a little bitthis theory holds.
(31:04):
But I do think also one piececomparison between Sergio, Isaac
of where Max was in his ownsecond seat driver.
I wonder if there is a I don'tkind of implies resignment, but
(31:26):
But like, Max has got it and hehe's not trying to prove
anything, anything to anyone butto himself.
And he seems a very.
At peace and enjoying and hasn'tsaid, I don't want to keep
racing.
That's by any mention.
But like the partner teamthink it just has a different
(31:53):
interaction with one another.
And then you add that into allthe other things that you guys
have already mentioned, or thecultural environment of Red
bull, let alone all the otherstuff.
I can see why Isaac is able towhat he's experiencing versus
were there in that second seat.
(32:13):
So moving on to the middle ofthe pack because time is getting
past us.
Any thoughts about alpine racingI will say I thought the racing
Bulls team was actuallyunderrated.
I mean, they came in P9 and P10.
And I don't think, you know inI thought that was really good
I'm solid performances again.
(32:34):
Another home team ish uh,Any thoughts about that?
We did touch on the WilliamsUh, it's race and more the
implications for the yellowflag.
But any thoughts about any ofthose teams, any of those
drivers?
Yeah, I think Williams werenever going to get anywhere all
(32:55):
weekend.
Uh, because the car is heavy andat the, at the Red Bull Ring at
the same point aboutsustainable, uh, sustained
cornering speed.
Um, if you got more weight, youAnd basically that damages the
lap time you slide around more,uh, because you're pushing more
(33:17):
weight around.
And so they were, they wereThey knew where they were going
They didn't know that was goingUm, but, you know, they knew
they weren't going to do verymuch.
And again, and that's a littleThey've still got work to do,
But um, you know, they are,And I think once they get the
(33:46):
you know, we'll see a muchDick, any thoughts about the
Yeah, I think, you know, to yourpoint I thought racing bulls did
well.
You know obviously the otherUm, and so I, I, I do, I, I
(34:06):
I, as a fan of the WilliamsUh, I'm sorry to see them
They had really I thought overthe last couple seasons, they've
been showing progression andprogress.
And then this year they'vestep back because like Joe said,
(34:28):
overweight, I guess.
And I think it's Manzo.
Joe, correct me if I'm wrong, they're going to have pretty
them back to the, you know,So, um, hopefully we'll see a
towards the last of the seasoncar needs to be on a diet.
(34:53):
Yeah, I think, I mean, we'veI think that Williams the reason
the car is, is heavy is onebased on the production problems
that they have for theirmanufacturing base wasn't strong
enough.
So, you know, you can say, um,you know, you can say, well,
(35:13):
they could have done a betterjob.
Lightning it, the fact is theyAnd then they had to make
compromises they didn't want tomake.
So in lots of ways, they knowUm, they need to have the time
And they need to have in futuredo the same thing again.
(35:34):
Yeah.
Yeah.
So let's move to the back of theAny thoughts about Audi, Aston
I think we mentioned Cadillac incompletion of the race, but
Uh, no big surprise withthink I think that they talked
(35:58):
I think that they, they've got aAnd I think this is part of the
Uh, the biggest problem theyhave is, you know, what have
they sold to the people payingfor it?
What is their argument whereto where the reality is?
I think the reality is somethingin Formula One knew they weren't
(36:20):
Um, and I think they might have, you know, they might have
oversold it a bit, but we'llsee.
Um, Aston Martin was exactlythem at the moment.
And nothing's going to changea new car, an Audi.
Um I think they were sufferingthan anything else as well.
(36:42):
Um, but I don't think there'sreport down the back.
Dick, what about you?
Well, I, I made a, what Iobservation in FP three.
Um, When we're talking aboutAston Martin, there was a
(37:02):
George.
It was towards the end of FPthree, and they had the on board
video of George setting the lapthat ultimately left him at the
top of the of the of the timesheets.
Uh, and FP three.
And he's going around the lapsee the speck of a car.
(37:22):

And I was like, oh my goodness.
Um. It's just they've gone, youwith a switch, as we'd say.
I mean, they just have no shot.
And um, it just, it was such a,an eye opener for me of just how
(38:32):
badass that Martin really isright now.
It's sad.
I feel sorry for, for everybodyI mean, hopefully they'll get it

But good grief it was bad.
Yeah, yeah I agree.
I'm looking at the clock andday jobs calling moment.
(38:54):
But I wanted to say if peoplehaven't already unplugging you,
Joe, is.
They need to make sure and readWell, they should read it every
The Jsbmb newsletter.
But I loved your articles inthere that were about silly

If anything, I would encouragepeople to listen to our episode
about why there aren't moreAmericans on the grid, because I
think some of the things thatyou just imply, Joe and Dick are
highlighting is theintentionality of going through

is the proposition I think thatwe're seeing.
(41:38):

more traditional pathway.
