Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining me on the line.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Our first candidate in the Meet the Candidates discussion for
Nightcliff it is the incumbent, the ALP member, Natasha Files.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Good morning to you.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Good morning Katie, Good morning listeners.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Now are you ready? We've got a series of questions.
You got seven minutes to answer.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
The I'm ready, Thank you, Let's.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Do it all right. Why did you decide to put
your hand up to run again?

Speaker 3 (00:26):
So, Katie, I know that I'm a strong, proactive member
of our community and I want to make sure that
we are represented in the Northern Territory Parliament. And also
that members of our community have a point that they
can come to and I can help guide them with
the issues and ideas that they have.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Now, why do you think that you're the best person
for the role based on that previous experience in the
community and through the work that you've done.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
So, Katie, I work every day to support our community,
to support the people that live in the Nightcliff area,
providing them with information, you know, whether it's local council
or federal government. I can guide them, become their advocate.
And also I think that I've been very consistent in
making myself available across the community on a regular basis
and engaging with the community so that I can hear

(01:12):
their views and make sure I best represent them.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
What would you say have been your biggest achievements since well,
since becoming the local member all those years ago.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
So we've achieved a number of things in Nightcliff. We've
seen public housing redeveloped, We've got police CCTV and a
police station. We've got solar power on our primary middle school.
But Katie, we've made upgrades around Nightcliffe Road, getting two
sets of pedestrian traffic lights which really allows our kids
and anyone in the community to safely travel across the community.

(01:44):
Lights on Nightcliff Oval. So I've certainly, you know, there's
been a lot of things that I've been able to
achieve since I've been the member for Nightcliff.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Now, in terms of the issues being experienced in Nightcliff,
what are what do you see as being the biggest
issues in the electorate.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
So, Katie, of living crime and antisocial behavior, but also
ensuring that we develop the territory and that we have
those job opportunities, but not at the cost of our
environment and our natural resources.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
And so in terms of those issues. Why do you
feel you're the best place to sort them out. I
know that there's going to be some listening this morning
who are saying, well, you're the Chief Minister and had
the opportunity to really try to, you know, to get
stuck into them, and weren't as effectives as what others
would have.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Liked you to have been.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
So, Katie, there's been a huge amount that's been done.
So we've been able to develop national parks, We've been
able to have the dough and Harbor Strategy, the Anti
Coastal Marine Management Plan, but also work on climate change,
so ensuring that we are putting in place measures to
get towards net zero emissions by twenty fifty and fifty
percent renewables, that big battery, so stability in our power system,

(02:53):
but at the same time that quickest possible transition to renewables.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
I know the climate and certainly the environment is going
to be quite a hot, a hot issue. I think
for Nightcliff, Natasha, do you support the development of onshore gas?

Speaker 3 (03:10):
So, Katie, what I support is a secure energy supply
with the quickest possible transition to renewables. But I also
think in developing on shore gas, that we need to
make sure that there's an opportunity for Territorians to benefit
from both jobs but also that vital revenue to invest
in our communities and our government services and as I said,
to not be at the sake of the environment. That's why,

(03:32):
for example, the Chief Health Officer is involved in the
assessments of this industry.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Now, one other topic that I know does sort of
fall out of Nightcliff Electric to some degree, but it's
still something that people in the electroc of Nightcliff are
concerned about is St. Vinnie's moving into coconut growth. Where
do you stand on this move?

Speaker 3 (03:52):
So, Katie, I think that's an excellent example of why
I'm a strong local member. I let my community know
that this was happening, I ask them they thought of it,
and then I was able to connect people so that
they could put in their views around that. But Katie,
I don't think it's the right place. I think that
we have a large amount of public housing, community housing,

(04:12):
and social housing, which we welcome, but it needs to
be integrated into our community so that we can ensure
that the community doesn't have any impact from these services.
So I was frustrated at the lack of communication with
some Vincent de Paul and members of our community.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
How did it sort of happen?

Speaker 3 (04:31):
So, Katie, they need to really like Kate, and I
don't disagree with that. There's opportunities for them on that
site at Stuart Park, but they did not consult or
listen to the community in Coconut Growth around that relocation.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
All right, A couple of quick ones in terms of preferences.
Where are the labor like where you know what's going
to happen with your preferences.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
So Katie, you know what is important to me. I
want to see that in other candidates, but that's a
matter that we step through once we see the final
nominations or the seat of Nightcliff.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
All right, now, you've still got a little bit of
time left. We're sitting on four minutes forty. Why should
people vote for you?

Speaker 3 (05:08):
So, Katie, as I said, you know, I really take
my role seriously and that I need to be there
for all members of the community and as I said,
supporting people, supporting businesses, becoming their advocate, but also bringing
our community together. So hosting those events for seniors, making
sure that I regularly dawknop that I regularly hold mobile

(05:29):
offices and I have done that over twelve years. It's
not something that's been a flurry in the last few months.
I have always done that, whether I was in opposition
or whether I was a minister. But I think going forward, Katie,
I want to make sure that we transition our schools.
We've got a fantastic opportunity to go from middle schools
to comprehensive high schools. I want to see the issue

(05:49):
of cost of living, so ensuring that power and water
that they remain as public assets, and that we do
transition across to renewables. And just in the electorate, we
have some older housing stock and we see that redevelopment
coming in, making sure that that's balanced, that we don't
change the amenity of our neighborhood here in the Nightcliff electorate.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
All right, you've still got a minute to go. Anything
else you want to add before we wrap up, Katie.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
It's enormous privilege, and you know, for the last twelve years,
I've worked incredibly hard. It's been for me coming back
out into the community over the past few months, you know,
connecting with people and you know, making sure that going
forward that I can be that strong, proactive voice for them,
not sitting waiting for people to come to me, but
getting out there listening and making sure that those issues

(06:35):
and those ideas from our community are channeled through well.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Natasha Files the current member for Nightcliff, appreciate your time
this morning, and we will keep the series going. We've
still got all the other candidates to catch up with.
Thank you for your time this morning.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Thanks Katie, and take care.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Thank you.
