Today I'll dig into the crucial differences between sensation and perception and their significant impacts on our health. Sensation is defined as physical feelings like touch, sight, or pain, and can be acute or chronic. Perception, on the other hand, is shaped by our beliefs and past experiences. These are similar, but not the same, and they intertwine to influence our wellbeing. I can't overstate the importance of positive thinking and offers strategies to reframe our beliefs and perceptions for better health. Now that we're in a new year, I encourage you to reflect on and address sensations and perceptions to create a healthier future.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
Welcome back to a Magical Life.
I'm your host, magic Barclay, and today I wanna talk about
sensation and perception.
They're completely different andthey both can have dramatic
effects on your health.
Before we get started, don'tforget to like, subscribe,
review, and share this episode.
You can join our conversation.

(01:05):
Just visit us on all major.
Podcast platforms.
Now let's get into it.
What is sensation?
Well, sensation is a physicalfeeling.
a perception, but it resultsfrom stimulation of sensors such
as touch, sight, hearing, andnerves because we get nervous

(01:30):
system signals called pain orburning or itching.
And so we can really link upsymptomology from our body with
sensation.
Now, sensation can.
Be acute, it can be instant, orit can be a chronic sensation.

(01:53):
And we see this with people thatmaybe have had an amputation and
they still have the sensation ofthe amputated limb being there.
They still have the sensation ofpain because your body actually
has a memory.
And so this plays a really bigpart in our health.

(02:16):
But let's look at acute orinstant sensation for today's
discussion.
Sensation can feel like a lot ofdifferent things, and so we need
to be able to comprehend thatsensation.
Symptoms are very closelylinked, and you've all heard me

(02:38):
talk before about we don't treatsymptoms only, we use them as
indicators for the root cause.
Let's look at perception, because perception is completely
different.
Perception is a belief oropinion held by you, held by
others, and perception can becolored by our previous

(03:04):
experience.
Now I'm going to give you alittle example.
It's not a health example, butit'll kind of describe how
perception can taint us movingforward.
Then we'll link back to yourhealth.
So recently I bought.
An item from eBay.
Now I've had experience witheBay before where they've taken

(03:28):
my money, the seller has takenmy money, said something,
shipped, it's never beenshipped, sent me some bogus
tracking, and you know, I'velost my money.
And then I have to complain toeBay and chase it up, which is a
whole big ordeal.
And if you're a really busyperson like me, it's something

(03:48):
you really don't wanna have tobe doing.
You also don't wanna have toleave bad.
Reviews for people because doyou know what you do?
That even though they may havedeserved it, someone may do it
to you, you may not deserve it.
You know, it kind of just keepsgoing on and you're putting
negative out there and negativeattracts negative.

(04:08):
So back to perception, back tomy item.
I bought my item and it wasprobably.
I wanna say a couple of days, maybe up to a week where there
was no communication.
Now I don't know what theseller's going through, right?

(04:29):
I only know through myperception, my previous eBay
experience.
So time comes, items should havebeen delivered.
No item.
I completely lose it because I'mlike, my perception tells me
this is another eBay drama likebefore.

(04:51):
And, oh, here we go.
So I put a complaint in.
Now I didn't know what theseller was going through, right?
Turns out the seller had beenaway.
Doing something very importantin their lives and had only just
shipped the item.
Of course, my perception hasjaded me and I'm believing that

(05:14):
I've been ripped off.
Now.
Long story short, the item came,it was perfect.
It's in use.
It was very much needed.
We were actually really, reallywaiting for this item and you
know, I had to.
Full on my sword and do theright thing and apologize to the

(05:34):
seller for my complaint and leteBay know that everything was
fine.
And then I left a really nicereview for the seller because he
hadn't done anything wrong,right?
He'd had stuff going on in hislife that I didn't know about,

(05:55):
but he hadn't done anythingwrong.
He delivered.
The item, the item was perfect.
The item is still in use now,and it was my perception of what
had happened to my previous eBayexperience that jaded this

(06:15):
transaction.
Now the same thing can happenwith our health.
We can make a perception basedon our belief of our body, our
belief of our ability to heal, our belief of all the myths that
we've been told about ourhealth.

(06:35):
Like butter is bad for you.
Salt is bad for you, eggs arebad for you.
You know, you've heard all ofthose over the past.
I know five or six decades, right?
So that all helps create ourperception.
And so that can affect ourhealth as well.
Very different to sensation, which is a perception, but it's

(06:56):
more a physical feeling.
Perception is a belief or anopinion.
So how do these bothdramatically affect our health?
Well.
They both can have acute orinstant I guess, effect.
They can wreak havoc.

(07:18):
They can change how we feelabout what's actually happening
Based on our beliefs oropinions, or based on our
feelings, our physical feelings.
And then if that's not addressedand addressed in a healthy and
proper way, that leads tochronic issues.

(07:38):
So you can have chronicsensation, the tingling that
doesn't go away, the pain thatdoesn't go away.
The symptomology, that doesn'tgo away.
And we can have chronicperception of our health.
How many times have we said itor heard someone else say it?

(08:00):
And universe, I'm just usingthis as an example, please don't
do this to me, but how manytimes do you say, I don't heal
properly?
If I cut myself, I'm going tobleed for ages.
Well, that may have been thecase once.
It's not necessarily going to bethe case once you start working
on your health.

(08:20):
How many times do you say, I'vegot a crappy immune system, and
yet you don't know which immunetype you are in at the time, why
you're in it.
And maybe you might be stuckthere, but you don't know why
you are stuck there.
So the sensation would be.
Illness, whatever it is, and theperception would be that you are

(08:42):
never getting out of it.
We've talked about autoimmunebefore.
In fact, we've talked aboutautoimmune so many times.
Perception and sensation reallycome in more perception here
because you believe.
That you can't get.
Well, you believe that becauseyou have a label or a diagnosis

(09:03):
that this is your lot in life.
And so it's really importantthat we see how both sensation
and perception can dramaticallyaffect our health.
Now, I've kind of drawndistinction between the two.

(09:24):
But is there that muchdistinction?
That's the next question.
And the answer is no, but theanswer is also yes.
And why?
Why is this so?
If we look at sensation, as Isaid, physical feelings, more

(09:46):
symptoms.
If we are looking in the case oflimbic involvement, so our
emotional brain, which is veryclosely linked to trauma, it
doesn't need to be trauma as in,you know, a crappy family.
It can be trauma as inautoimmune.

(10:08):
It can be trauma as in pastphysical reactions to things.
So if we look at the limbicbrain.
We look at mold very closelyattached to our limbic response
to things as well.
Sensation creates perception,and perception creates

(10:33):
sensation.
So this is why it's that yes andno answer because your limbic
brain takes the initialsensation.
So the acute sensation.
It creates a perception and thatperception can become so toxic
to you that it becomes asensation.

(10:56):
So now that I've completelyconfused you, let's have a look
at how we can deal with this.
Now, you've heard me talk beforeabout how to believe.
How to, Not just how to believein yourself, but how to reframe

(11:20):
beliefs about yourself.
We've talked about this beforeand.
What you put out there, you willget back.
And we know this, right?
We know this to be true.
How does this work withperception?
Well, if we perceive a situationsuch as an illness to be true.

(11:41):
It means we believe that to betrue.
if we believe that we have lostourselves to this illness, that
then means that that is true.
Now, if we believe that we'velost ourselves to the illness,
that means we believe that weare less than that we are.

(12:02):
Some say deserving of it, somemay say destined to be of it.
And when we are looking atillness, that means we are so
emotionally attached to thediagnosis.
So what does that mean forsensation?

(12:23):
We're so emotionally attached tothe diagnosis that that now
becomes our physical feeling.
That that pain fromfibromyalgia, for example, is
never going to go away, and yourperception feeds or fuels the
sensation.
And so the more you believe itto be true, the more it's going

(12:45):
to happen.
The more you perceive this to beyour lot in life, the more it's
going to happen.
And so this is why I talk to youso much about what you think and
feel.
Are so closely linked that theycan become the creator of more

(13:09):
chronic illness.
They can become the impetus tomore chronic illness.
They can become the fuel to morechronic illness.
So how do we go about our liveswithout sensation and
perception?

(13:30):
Fueling illness.
Well, we've spoken about this inprevious episodes.
When the sensation occurs,acknowledge it.
My knee is sore, but it will getbetter.
It's not.
My knee is sore.
Full stop.
End of discussion.

(13:50):
It's my knee is sore.
It will get better.
Acknowledge that it's happening.
But don't dwell in it.
Don't live in it.
Don't make it your new place tobe, otherwise.
Your knee will be sore furtherand it will get worse.
And then you'll create aperception about that.

(14:11):
Now, I've used this as an, as anexample because I hurt my niece
ever weeks ago, and it has beensoar on and off.
I joked to someone the otherday, oh, well I guess you know
this is the way it is.
I'll be hop along for a littlewhile, and they looked at me and
they said, we've heard yourpodcast.

(14:33):
Why did you say that?
I said, it was a joke.
And they said, not funny.
And they were correct.
They pulled me up using my owndiscussion with you guys.
They were 100% correct, so Iquickly reframed it.
And I said, yeah, my knee issore at the moment.
It's not something I wanna livein forever.
It's not somewhere I wanna be.

(14:55):
I'm doing all the exercises Ican to fix it and it'll be fine.
Did I have a perception thatthat's where I was gonna be all
the time?
No.
I was using a joke, aself-deprecating joke, a.
Which, you know, if this personhadn't heard the podcast and

(15:17):
pulled me up on it.
I probably would've stuffed itup and let my knee know that it
could keep being sore and youknow, so everyone does this.
We just do it.
We don't even realize we aredoing it.
So our self-talk here really hasto come in when the sensation

(15:38):
occurs so that we don't createthe perception our body wants to
live in.
This has been a completelyconfusing episode and I do
apologize for that, butsomething I felt I needed to say
and as we're recording this,we're going towards Christmas.

(15:59):
It's the end of the year and youknow, I think it's a time of
reflection and.
We need to reflect on how oursensations create our
perceptions and how that affectsour lives moving forward.
Going into a new year, is thatperception true and correct, or

(16:22):
is it something you can get ridof?
Is it something that you canchange?
Is it something you can work on?
Because guess what, you've gotanother brand new fresh year
coming ahead and that year.
Is not full of perceptions thatyou've created from time gone
by.

(16:43):
It's time that hasn't happenedyet.
It's life that hasn't happenedyet.
It's health that needs boostingnow before you go into the new
year.
And the sensations need to beaddressed now.
You know, we always talk aboutwe're not symptom chasing, we're
not treating symptoms.

(17:03):
But address the sensation now.
Book your root cause analysiscall.
We're working right through theholidays.
Apart from Christmas day and NewYear's Day, we are working right
through the holidays.
Book your root cause analysis.
Call now.
It's free.
Anywhere in the world.
May take a little bit of time'cause we're on a skeleton crew

(17:26):
to actually get your findings toyou.
When I say that, maybe a coupleof days.
But really address what thesensation is in your body now so
that the perception is healthierand so that we can stop that
symptomology from reoccurring, from reinserting your body, from

(17:50):
re havoc in your health.
I just made a new word up.
That's interesting.
Anyway, let's go into the newyear, armed with positivity and
with answers and with actionsteps to take.
I know, you know, for my ownfamily, I always make the kind

(18:12):
of the end of December this lastweek.
I always make it a reallypoignant time.
For us to all address thingsthat maybe we don't wanna take
into the next year.
Now you've heard about, youknow, my son's dental surgery,
he had it last week.
He's still a little bit sore andthat's okay, but I've told him

(18:35):
that doesn't come into the newyear with you.
Now you look at what you haddone and look at how that's
changing your future.
Something else to take into thenew year is I used to, and I
actually still do this with mykids, they're in their twenties

(18:57):
and I still do it, but I used tomake them always clean out their
toys and their books and donatethings that they didn't want to
use anymore.
Making sure that they weren'tbroken or torn or you know,
drawn on or whatever.
We only donate good things, butdonate something now.
Do a big cleanup.

(19:19):
If you wanna get new stuff, helpsomeone less fortunate before
you help yourself.
And I talk to them about thisevery year.
Now that they're older, we alsotalk about beliefs or
perceptions doing this everysingle year.
And so I've spoken to them andsaid, throw out what doesn't

(19:44):
serve you, what perceptions orbeliefs don't serve you, make
room for new good stuff in thenew year.
And so I urge you all to do thisas well.
Is really address what ishappening in your body now and

(20:06):
really address what you don'tneed moving forward and make way
for the good stuff.
Make way for the next year to begreat with your health.
Make way for the next year to begreat with how you feel about
yourself.
How you feel about other peoplearound you make way for the next

(20:30):
year to be the year that yoursensation may be instant or
acute, but your perception ispositive and long lasting and
rebuilding and supporting, notdragging you down, not.

(20:50):
Sticking you in a place whereyou don't wanna be, not creating
and forever replicating pain andmisery.
Make sure that you aresupporting you.
Do a big clean out.
Do the toy, clean out, but do itwith your life.
You know, have a look at thepeople around you.

(21:12):
Have a look at the things aroundyou.
Have a look at what's happeningwith your health.
Support you going into the newyear.
Slight tangent there, but neededto be said.
Now, we've discussed sensationand perception and how they're
different, but how they're notthat different because they can

(21:33):
affect each other, right?
They both have dramatic effectson your health.
It's time to address both ofthese.

control of your sensation andmake sure that it is only acute
or instant and that it doesn'tbecome chronic.
