There is a new term making the runs, and it's called
AI brain dry.
You have probably felt it evenif you did not have a name for
it.
It's that specific kind of tiredthat happens not after a long
time at work or a long day ofwork or long hours of work, but

after a long day of trying tokeep up with tools that keep
changing, updating, andmultiplying.
It feels like mental static.
Like your brain has tabs openthat you cannot close.
Exactly like your browser.

And today we are talking aboutwhat is actually happening in
your nervous system when AIoverwhelms you and what to do
about it.
Let's go.
What is AI brain fry?

(01:19):
And I know it's a new term.
AI brain fry is not aproductivity problem, it's a
biology problem.
Here is what is actuallyhappening.
Your prefrontal cortex runs onglucose.
Trigger.
It has a metabolic budget.
Every decision you make, everynew interface you learn, every

time you switch between toolsdraws from that budget.
It's exactly like you put moneyin a bank and you keep
withdrawing money from it tillit's read.
This is called decision fatigue.
And it's well-documentedneuroscience, not theory.
Now add AI to the picture.

In 2024, the average knowledgeworker encountered a new AI
tool.
Update or workflow change everysix to ten days.
Not every month, every six toten days.
I in one of my other episodes,older, I think in season three,
I called it the AI Wicklash.

Every encounter requiressomething very specific from
your brain.
It requires what neurosciencecall cognitive reapprism.
Your brain has to stop what it'sdoing, assess whether this new
thing is a threat or anopportunity, decide whether it's
worth the energy to learn, andthen attempt to consolidate it

(02:47):
alongside everything it alreadyknows.
That process alone depletesglucose reserves in the
prefrontal cortex.
Do it repeatedly, daily, on topof an already full leadership
load.
That is AI brain fry.
And here is what makes itdifferent from regular work

(03:10):
exhaustion.
Regular exhaustion depletes youafter output.
You worked hard, you usedenergy, you need rest.
AI brain fry depletes you at theinput stage.
Not output, input.
Before you have even producedanything.

The learning itself is thedream.
Which is why leaders describefeeling exhausted by AI even
when they have not used it to doanything yet.
Just the presence of the demandis enough.
Why executives hit this harder?

(03:51):
Not everyone hits AI brain fryat the same rate.
Executives hit it harder.
And there are three specificreasons why.
Reason one, identity threatmultiplies the metabolic cost.
When you have built a career onexpertise, AI does not just feel

like a new tool.
It feels like a challenge to thething that made you successful.
The amygdala reads identitythreat the same way it reads
physical threat.
It fires.
Threat response activates.
Now your brain is simultaneouslytrying to learn the new tool and

managing an active stressresponse.
The metabolic cost doubles.
Research shows that AI-heavyemployees are burning out 45%
faster than their peers.
That is not because AI createsmore work.
It's because the threat responserunning underneath the work

drains the system before thework even begins.
Reason two.
Context switching at theexecutive level is uniquely
expensive.
A frontline employee might useone or two AI tools in a defined
workflow.
An executive is expected tounderstand, evaluate, approve,

and lead AI adoption acrossentire departments while
simultaneously running theorganization.
That is not one context.
That is five or six contextsswitching rapidly with high
stakes attached to each other.
Every context switch costs thebrain approximately twenty

(05:47):
minutes of refocusing time.
Imagine at every interruption,every switch, it takes the brain
twenty minutes to go back tonormal.
Calculate that but how manytimes it happens a day.
How much did you lose?
Hmm.
At the executive level,uninterrupted blocks of that

length are rare.
Which means the brain is payingthe switching costs repeatedly
without ever completing therecovery cycle.
That is not inefficiency.
That's neuroscience.
Reason number three, the absenceof permission to not know.
Here is the one thing thatnobody, nobody talks about.

(06:35):
Executives are expected to leadAI adoption, to have the
answers, to project confidence,which means many senior leaders
are managing AI overwhelm incomplete silence.
They cannot say they are lost.
They cannot admit the pace istoo much because the role
demands they appear certain,calm, confident.

That suppression of the stressresponse is its own metabolic
cost.
Hiding dysregulation takesenergy.
Performing composure whileinternally overwhelmed
accelerates the depression.
Executives are not just tiredfrom AI, they are tired from
pretending they are not tiredfrom AI.

(07:25):
The chicken or the egg.
What to do about this?
Three things, practical,neuroscience-backed, you can use
these this week.
One, consolidate before you add.
Your brain consolidates newlearning during rest,
specifically during sleep andduring low stimulation downtime.

(07:46):
If you're adding a new AI toolbefore the last one is
consolidated, you are notbuilding capability.
You are creating interference.
The rule is simple.
One new AI tool or workflow pertwo weeks.
Minimum.
Not because you're slow, becausethat's how long the hypocampus

(08:07):
needs to move new procedurallearning into long-term memory.
One new tool, one workflow pertwo weeks.
Minimum.
They create the exact resistanceand failure rates they are

(08:30):
trying to avoid.
Two, name the threat before youmanage the tool.
Before your next AI onboarding,before your next tool demo,
before you open another tutoriallink, do this.
Ask what specifically about thisfeels threatening?
Is it the time cost?
The learning curve?

(08:51):
The implication that yourcurrent method is inadequate?
The fear of getting it wrongpublicly?
Name it.
Out loud or on paper.
Naming a threat reduces amygdalaactivation.
This is documented inneuroscience research going back
to a landmark UCLA study oneffect labeling.

(09:16):
The act of naming shiftsprocessing from the survival
brain to the prefrontal cortex.
So naming a threat reducesamygdala activation.
I always used to say feel it,own it, name it, and claim it.

(09:39):
So own the threat and name it.
It reduces amygdala activation.
You cannot learn well from athreat response.
Naming the threat is the firstregulation move.
This is the foundation of myproprietary brain, B-R-A-I-N
method or framework.

(10:01):
Regulation before strategy everytime.

Protect one cognitive peak perday from AI demands.
Your prefrontal cortex performsbest in the first 90 to 120
minutes after full wakefulness.
This is your cognitive peak.
Most executives feel that thatwindow is too small for them

(10:27):
during the day.
So they fill that window withemail, messages, reactive tasks,
including AI-related demands.
Protect that window.
One task that requires your bestthinking.
No AI tool management, no newlearning, no tool switching.
Your brain has a budget.

(10:47):
Spend the peak hours on what youcan only you can do.
Let AI handle what does notrequire your peak.
That is not resistance to AI.
That is strategic use of yourmost finite and fine resources.
AI brain fry is real, it'smeasurables and it's not going

(11:12):
away on its own.
The tool will keep coming.
The AI will keep coming.
Adding new tools will keepcoming.
The pace will not slow down.
The organizations that win arenot the ones that adopt the most
tools fastest.

They are the ones that lead AIadoption from a regulated
nervous system.
